Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick believes that Lisa Smith is happy to be able to put forward her version of events while being questioned at Kevin Street Garda station in Dublin. The 38year old returned to Ireland on Sunday with her young daughter where she was picked up by Gardaí who took her to Kevin Street.

There she was questioned on suspicion of terrorist offences.

Lisa, originally from Muirhevnamor, is a former member of the 27th Battalion stationed in Dundalk.

She then moved into the Air Corps before leaving the defence forces in 2011. Around this time she converted to Islam and then in 2015 she

travelled to Syria to live in an ISIS stronghold. She married and had a child with a British jihadist, Sajid Aslam, whom she said later died in the conflict.

After the defeat of ISIS earlier this year, Lisa and her daughter stayed in refugee camps run by Kurdish forces. She was then handed over to Turkish officials before finally being sent back to Ireland after negotiations with Irish officials for her repatriation.

Now Gardaí must determine if she has committed any terrorist acts and since Sunday she has been questioned in Kevin Street under section 30 of the Offences Against the State act.

A Dundalk man with a passion for adventure is looking for support to realise his dream of taking part in one of the world’s toughest challenges.

Tommy McArdle, who has been living in Vancouver for the past year, is in line to be selected to compete in the arduous “Fjallraven Polar’, which consists of a 300km adventure across the Arctic wilderness and in order to take part he needs people to vote for him online.

More than 20 ordinary people, from all around the world, apply to be part of this adventure of a lifetime. They travel from Signaldalen in Norway to Väkkäräjärvi in Sweden, learning from Fjällräven’s team of experts and geared up with Fjällräven’s best winter clothing and equipment. They drive their own dogsleds, take care of their own dogs, prepare all their own food and set up their own camps.

The local man, who attended St Josephs Primary School and the Marist, studied photography at O Fiaich College before working for four years with his uncle Jock McArdle at OutdoorXchange where his interest in the

outdoors developed.

He is seeking to take that passion to a new level by becoming the first person from Ireland to take part in the competition, and he explained what it entails.

“More than 200 highly skilled sled dogs will help us make it across the wilderness. It is a test of physical and mental strength along with challenging your skills to make it through the wilderness, as it can fall below -30 degrees at times.

“I have two ways of being in with a chance of going to this life changing experience. One is by public vote and the second is the jury who will hand pick ten lucky applicants and that is why I am asking local people to vote for me by December 12,” explained Tommy.

“It would be very much appreciated if people voted for me as I am currently the only Irish person in the top tier of contenders. With just over a week to go I need all the help I can get and if I do win a place I will be the first Irish person in the history of the event to attend it,” he added.

“I haven’t spoke to Lisa directly but her parents have told me that she is very happy to be able to put forward her side of the story and she is hopeful that she will be released without charge. Breathnach asks for increased funding for DkIT Fianna Fáil TD Breathnach spoke in the Dáil about increased funding for DkIT as a borderbased Institute of Technology.

Breathnach, the Fianna Fáil spokesperson on cross-border co-operation said to Tánáiste Simon Coveney that Dundalk IT and Letterkenny IT should be given extra support and funding in a post-Brexit scenario.

Speaking in the Dáil, Breathnach spoke of the importance of DkIT. “The role played

by third level institutions in the regions is invaluable in respect not only of attracting employment but also of providing the skills necessary in the region, as we saw last week, when WuXi Biologics in Dundalk announced it would add 200 jobs to its workforce, bringing the to-

tal to 600.

“My question relates to the role of Dundalk Institute of Technology, and Letterkenny Institute of Technology, in the context of North-South relationships. What efforts are being made to secure additional funding for the two institutions in respect of their cross-

The Tánáiste responded saying: “DkIT will get a fair crack of the whip. I have visited the college and it does a su-

Advantages will flow from creating technological universities, but the benchmarks that have to be met to qualify technically for the status are clear.

News County Council calls on Government to plan for a United Ireland

in Brief Bay River Association

The Dundalk Bay River Association are holding a meeting in Creative Spark on Sunday December 15 from 10am to 1pm.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide information, take questions and to set up a working group which will establish the association’s constitution and work towards forming a committee. Members of clubs and associations in the Dundalk area are welcome to attend and share their interests and concerns in relation to local rivers and streams.

During the November meeting of Louth County Council a motion regarding Irish reunification, introduced by Sinn Féin councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú, led to a lengthy debate in the council chamber.

Cllr Ó Murchú proposed a motion that Louth County Council would call on the Government to immediately plan for a United Ireland and to call on the British Secretary of State to set a date for a border poll on Irish Unification.

“I am pleased that across all parties councillors supported the initial part of my motion and that a strong message will be sent to the government that the people of Louth demand immediate preparations for a United Ireland,” stated Cllr Ó Murchú.

“This adds to the request contained in the letter to An Taoiseach by the Ireland’s Future group, with over 1000 signatories, which calls for a Citizens’ Assembly to reflect

‘the views of citizens North and South’. This letter also welcomed discussions taking place among the unionist community about their future place on the island and about the need to begin planning now for Irish Unity.

“I regret that some councillors felt that the time was not right to set a date for a referendum on unity and that this element of the motion was removed.

“Sinn Féin believes that, as pro-

vided for in the Good Friday Agreement, the British Secretary of State should set a date for a unity poll, allowing time for a full and frank discussion on what an agreed united Ireland would look like,” he added.

“The lengthy and engaged discussion on the question of Irish Unity at Louth County Council was incredibly positive. Councillors spoke about the difficulties and advantages they perceived and also about the triggering mechanisms

for a Unity Poll.

“An RTE exit poll conducted after the last local and European elections indicated there is strong support for a united Ireland with 77% of voters polled indicating a preference for a United Ireland if a referendum was held tomorrow.

“Economically, the north and south of this island are interlinked and interdependent, as anyone in this area would know,” Cllr Ó Murchú concluded.

Poor quality of rural roads in Co Louth

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach spoke in the Dáil about the poor quality of rural roads in Louth and how they created a huge public safety issue. Breathnach asked Minister of State the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government John Paul Phelan if the Government will increase funding to repair and improve rural roads.

Breathnach commented “This is about people living on or near Paul McArdle, Ashlinn McArdle and Sula the dog, handing over a cheque for €4,525 to Brian Mur- rural roads or class three phy from The Birches following the race night fundraiser in memory of Jim McArdle and Willie roads. The State has a Clarke at Dundalk Stadium responsibility to serve

people from every part of the Country, yet the people living on third class roads are being treated as third class citizens. The Government promised to increase funding for rural roads in their Programme for Government but we need to see real progress on this.”

Minister Phelan noted there were two schemes for road improvements, the Local Improvement Scheme and the Community Involvement Scheme.

Breathnach said residents should not have to rely on

these schemes for safe roads and he called on the Government for increased funding to improve rural roads.

“It is a huge public safety concern for people who are living on these dangerous roads that have not been maintained for years with large cracks and potholes forming.

“The Minister confirmed to me that funding will be increased and this needs to happen as soon as possible before more lives are put at risk on these roads,” he added.

Another world record for Jordan Holland Local powerlifter, Jordan Holland, continues to make an impression on the international stage after recording his 17th world record.

The Dundalk man, who is a three-time world power lifting champion and has 17 world records in the squat, this year changed federations from the IDFPFto the AIPO and moved up a weight class.

He competed in his first worlds

in the AIPO in his new weight class of 75 kg in Limerick recently and once again was among the leading contenders. Jordan squatted 195 benched 100 and dead-lifted 190 for a total of 485 the exact same as the winner from Australia but because his opponent weighed in 200 grams lighter then Jordan at the weigh-in, Jordan missed out on the victory.

However, he took a fourth attempt at the squat of 205.5 for a

new world record and got his 17th in total and first in the new federation.

Jordan is trained by Barry Smith founder and coach of BPC power lifting club, who was also competing and won sliver in the full power and gold in the single dead lift comp with an amazing 221.5 lift at only 59 kg body weight.

BPC had three other athletes competing as well including

Elaine Corbett who won silver in her first full power world and ended the day with 135 kg dead lift for a total of 287.5 kg at only 46.2 kg body weight. Cliodhna McAteer had a 130 dead lift at under 67.5 body weight and Mark Pepper had a dead lift of 215 kg at 82.5 body weight.

Jordan has the national championships in April and he hopes to again qualify for the worlds next year.

Call to honour commitments to Ludlow family Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams has said that Garda Commissioner Drew Harris must honour commitments made to members of the family of Seamus Ludlow when they met on Monday morning.

“I understand that this morning’s meeting between the Ludlow family and the Garda Commissioner was positive and constructive,” Mr Adams stated.

“I welcome the apology which Drew Harris made to the family for the initial mishandling of this case.

“The Garda Commissioner also committed to examine what further investigative steps can be taken and he will meet the family again in January.

“I urge the Commissioner to ensure that all Garda files are available for any future investigative process,” he concluded.

Dundalk athlete Kate O’Connor has capped off an outstanding year by picking up the Irish U20 athlete of the year award for 2019. The eighteenyear old, who recently began studying at the University of Sheffield, became Ireland’s first ever female major championship multi-event medal winner when she won silver at the European U20 Championships in Sweden last July.

The Irish Life Health National Athletic Awards took place in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Blanchardstown last Thursday evening where the St Gerard’s A.C member fended off some

stiff opposition, including fellow European medallists Sarah Healy and Daragh McElhinney from UCD. Kate is currently working under renowned coach Toni Minichello who famously coached Jessica Ennis to a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.

As well as her achievements on the track Kate also successfully completed her Leaving Certificate and although she was originally destined to take up a scholarship in the University of Texas those plans changed and is now studying Sports Development with Coaching

in Sheffield while also being coached by Toni with the aim of progressing even further in her athletics career.

Speaking earlier this year Kate’s father and former coach Michael hinted that there is still an outside chance that she will be going to the Olympic games next summer.

“In the new year she will probably compete in a couple of competitions over in England and there is an outside chance that she could be on the plane to Tokyo for the Olympics if she clocks some good times early next year,” stated Michael.

Ginos move top of Dundalk Snooker League Ginos Diner made it two wins from two in the Dundalk Snooker League with a 4-0 win over the luckless Charlie Chaplins. Ginos stormed into the lead with a fine performance from Alan Thompson beating Stephen McBride before Mark McMullen defeated Aaron Callan and then Davey Moran upset Mickey Ralph to make

Thompson returned in the doubles match with partner Fra Rogers to beat Gary McNally and Mickey Ralph.

Breathnach says ambulance turnover times in Louth are shocking Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has said the turnover times for ambulances arriving at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda are shocking.

Ambulance turnaround times measure the time interval from ambulance arrival at a hospital, to when the crew is ready to accept another call.

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) have said that all hospitals in Ireland should monitor the implementation of 95% of patients being handed over from an ambulance crew to the emergency department staff in less than 20 minutes. The HSE monitors it at 30

minutes with a target of 95% turnaround in that time.

The figures show that Louth has a success rate of just 17.6% within the HIQA 20-minute turnover time and a 46% rate within the HSE 30-minute turnover time. These wait times are much higher than Louth’s 2017 figures, which were 36% in the 20-minute timeframe and 71% in the 30-minute timeframe.

The figures were supplied by the Department of Health after a Parliamentary Question was put down by Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Deputy Stephen Donnelly.

Commenting on the figures, Breathnach said the matter

highlighted the current difficulties in the health service.

“The increase in ambulance turnaround times is another reflection of the pressures on our hospitals and the lack of capacity to cope. This is because emergency departments are too busy and with too few staff to process a patient coming in by ambulance.

“It’s a vicious cycle; emergency departments are overcrowded, causing delays in taking patients from ambulances, causing increased ambulance response times. When ambulance response times worsen, people in emergencies are left in a very dangerous situation,” he stated.

Day one brought a Bronze medal for Michelle and a Gold for Ann Marie, and on day two Michelle and Ann Marie both took home Gold.

In a change from Target Archery in which the club normally competes, some of the members tried Field Archery, and competed in the Irish National Field Championships, and later in the 3D Championships in Wexford.

The club made a very good showing in the Field Championships with Fiachra Judge second in Men’s Compound category, Éamonn Rogers in fourth and John Keenan in fifth. In Barebow, Ann Marie Murray came second, with Jasek Szóstakowski in fourth, in Compound Christina O’Sullivan came second with Deirdre Rogers in third.

In the Wexford 3D Championships where the archers shoot at different unmarked distances at 3D animals, Éamonn Rogers came third, with eight year old Nina Flanagan first in the Cub category and her father Ciarán shooting a Trad Recurve in competition came

first in his category.

Following this, Michelle Brohan and Ann Marie Murray joined club mates Christy Banks, Claudia Heinze and Fiachra Judge at yet another indoor competition in Limavady. All five members won medals in different categories Barebow first place to Ann Marie Murray, second place to Claudia Heinze, Recurve second place to Michelle Brohan, Compound second place to Fiachra Judge and third for Christy Banks.

Those winning scores at the Passberger Cup have now qualified to shoot in the European Indoor Field Archery Competition in March.

The Old Dundalk Society is delighted to announce the first of the winter lecture series of the 2019 season, ‘Christian Brothers Schools (CBS) – 150 Years in Dundalk.

This lecture will take place in the Louth County Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk on Thursday December 5 at 8pm.

The lecture traces the history of the CBS schools in Dundalk and takes a closer look at some of the leaders of the order and the contribution they made to the education of the youth of Dundalk.

The lecture will also explore the many changes that have taken place in Dundalk in the past 150 years and will be delivered by Éamonn Ó hUallacháin, a teacher

who taught for 40 years in Dundalk, almost all of them in the CBS Secondary, now Coláiste Rís.

His family have strong links with the school going back more than 100 years. Éamonn has published a number of books on historical matters, and has lectured both locally and nationally on these topics.

He has broadcasted on almost 50 occasions on RTE’s Sunday Miscellany, frequently on topics of a historical nature.

These broadcasts are also published in his book “A Month of Sundays”.

Attendees are advised to come early as there is limited capacity at the venue.

Dundalk Karate held their Annual Awards Presentation recently, where members, family and friends, came together to celebrate everyone’s achievements from the past year.

With members as young as four years of age and as old as over 50, everyone came together and there was plenty of anticipation as to who was going to be awarded which award.

The awards took place in the Lilywhite Lounge on the Carrick Road and the atmosphere was electric ahead as the evening began.

Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus 3rd Dan and Club Secretary and Senior Member, Maria Hoey welcomed everyone to the Awards Presentation.

With numerous awards being awarded to all members in attendance, anticipation was high, and the awards included, “Ninja Kid’s Student

Caolan Rafferty tops the European golf rankings Congratulations to Caolan Rafferty who is currently No 1 on the European Golf Rankings which is compiled by the European Golf Association and is based on performances over the past 52 weeks. Caolan has also reached a career-high 14th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in recent weeks and is also ranked 17th in the World Scratch Golfers Amateur Rankings. 2019 has been another brilliant year for Caolan with the highlights being his appearance in the Walker Cup, his win at the West of Ireland and his semi-final appearance at the South African Amateur Open Championship.

Caolan also helped Dundalk retain their Leinster Barton Shield title and he and his team-mates were recognised for their achievement at the club’s end of season presentation ceremony in the clubhouse on Sunday. The event saw the presentation of cups to the winners of many of the

year’s competitions in 2019.

Sunday’s competition at Dundalk Golf Club was a four-man team event and for the third week in a row Peter McCaughey (20) found himself among the prizes as he partnered with Pascal Keenan (15), Eamonn Hoey (17) and Kevin Redmond (11) to take first place with an impressive return of 74pts for the 14 hole competition.

After opening with four points they quickly got down to business with six-point hauls from the next three holes before having to settle for four points from the par three fifth.

They also missed an opportunity at the par five sixth which Peter McCaughey birdied for four points but they could only add Eamonn Hoey’s one point bogey for a total of five points.

That began a run of six steady five points holes to the 11th before they finished with a flourish as the amassed an impressive 20 points over the

final three holes. It all began on the par five 12th where four-point birdies from McCaughey and Redmond yielded eight points and at the par three 13th McCaughey picked up a four-point birdie while Hoey had a three-point par for a seven point haul.

A three-point par from Keenan on their final hole, the 18th, and a two-point bogey from McCaughey delivered another five-point return and overall total of 74pts for the 14 holes played.

That left them four points clear of the second placed team of Mark Cumiskey (7), Andrew Cumiskey (10), Aaron Hoey (10) and Pearse Murphy (18).

Members are reminded that the club’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday, December 16 at 8pm in the Clubhouse and will be preceded by the AGM of the Men’s Club at 7pm.

tation Carlow and St. Peter’s Dunboyne. On the day the team were very successful winning all three games therefore being crowned winners of the development shield. Teacher and coach Elizabeth McNulty explained: “This is the first ever senior Camogie team to

be named at St. Vincent’s, and we are extremely proud of all the girls and their hard work and commitment. It’s fantastic to see Camogie up and running in the county and especially in schools in Co. Louth. This win is an important boost for the students involved.

Coláiste Chú Chulainn Fears over ambulance distributes it’s leadership services in North Louth

Coláiste Chu Chulainn, Dundalk has appointed a Senior Student Leadership Team.

Louth’s newest school has taken this initiative to ensure the student voice is central in decision making and policy implementation on the school according to Principal Thomas Sharkey.

“The student is the centre of everything we do in school. All of our work is focused on achieving excellence for our students. It is only natural that students are part of our management structure. We are the newest school in Louth and have set our sights on delivering innovation in education, employment, and community development for our community,” he explained.

Cllr Erin McGreehan through a Commencement Matter in Seanad Eireann raised local communities’ fears regarding ambulance services in North Louth. Fianna Fail Senator Keith Swanick asked the Minister of Health on McGreehan’s behalf to address the life threatening delays in which it often takes to get an ambulance to North Louth.

The ambulance service has three bases in Louth, Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee but experience shows that the resources given to these bases and the A&E Departments are inadequate.

Last April, for example it took two hours for an ambulance to attend to a man injured in an accident at Greenore Port

when an ambulance had to be despatched from Blanchardstown.

According to McGreehan this incident highlights the genuine problems with the service in North Louth.

“According to guidelines from the Health Information and Quality Authority, an ambulance should arrive at lifethreatening emergencies in less than 19 minutes, this discrepancy between best practice and reality is very concerning,” she stated.

Minister of State at the Department of Health Deputy Jim Daly responded stating that policy of dynamic deployment, where vehicles are strategically located where they are most likely to be required, rather

than located at a particular station. In this regard, Louth can also be served by resources based at neighbouring counties.

Cllr McGreehan commended the great work of the local ambulance service but added: “However it is a reflection on resources that are given to the Louth Ambulance Service and it is a constant worry for people living in isolated areas of North Louth that if they need an ambulance, they may have to wait up to two hours for it to arrive.

The North Louth Councillor believes the main reason for the delay is because emergency departments are too busy with too few staff to process a patient coming in by ambulance.

Active retirement group busy Christmas

Dundalk Active Retirement Association meet every Monday afternoon in Carroll Mead Hall, Pearse Park.

Ann Kirk spoke to the group recently about trying to help the homeless. She asked members to

help by donating gloves, hats etc and she had a long list of articles and clothes needed. Members can bring whatever they think is needed and place them in a box at the meetings.

The final Monday meeting of

the year will take place on December 9 while the Christmas Party is arranged for December 11 in the Four Seasons Hotel.

The group will then break for Christmas, reopening Monday January 13.

Successful start to season for Dundalk Swimming Club It’s been a hectic start to the Short Course season for swimmers from Dundalk Swimming Club.

Recently the club’s less experienced competitive swimmers took to the blocks for the first time this season at the Glenalbyn Swimming Club gala in Dublin and there was plenty of local medal success when Hugo Friel took Gold in the U9 25m Fly and 25m Free and Silver in the 50m Free event.

Shyne Kasozi also took two Golds in the U8 25m Back and 50m Free. There was Silver and Bronze for Roonald Univer in the U8 25m Free and 25m Back and there were new Personal Bests for Emily Coyle across her busy schedule in the U9 25m Fly, 25m Free, 25m Breast, 25m Back and the 100m Individual Medley.

Maebh Mullen also took a silver in the U9 25m Backstroke.

The following weekend was the Leinster Short Course championship.

One of the highlights of the weekend was when Evelyn Donnelly took to the starting blocks alongside Junior Olympic Silver Medalist and 2020 Olympic hopeful Niamh Coyne in the finals of the 16&Over 100m and 200m Breaststroke. Evelyn put in some impressive performances posting PBs in both events but ultimately Coyne proved the stronger and took the gold medal on both occasions.

Evelyn also competed in the 50m Breaststroke final and again posted a PB performance in the event, this time also securing a qualification time for the prestigious Irish Short Course Championship next month.

Almost a quarter of Irish motorists responding to a recent survey admitted that they made less of an effort to shop around when renewing their car insurance this year than they did in previous years.

In response to an AA IRELAND survey of over 6,000 Irish drivers, 10.60% of respondents strongly agreed that they put less time into shopping around this year than they had in the past. Meanwhile, a further 14.21% stated they ‘somewhat agreed’ that they had made less of an effort to shop around for car insurance in 2019.

“Generally speaking, many people will only shop around if they are unhappy with the renewal price that they received from their current insurer, but this kind of approach could mean you’re missing out on potential savings. Even if you’ve been with your current insurer for years or you’re pretty happy with your price, it doesn’t always mean that a better deal isn’t available somewhere else,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated.

“While some will have seen an easing of rising insurance costs, there are many out there who are still feeling the impact of the slow pace of progress in tackling the insurance crisis.”

“The Cost of Insurance Working Group has certainly

made some progress, but many of the major issues, such as personal injury awards, uninsured driving, and exaggerated claims have not been adequately addressed. As a result, insurance costs have remained at a rate significantly higher than they would have been 5 or so years ago, which magnifies the importance of the consumer putting some time into shopping around.”

The survey also found that over half of respondents who had shopped around were able to secure a better price as a result.

Of those surveyed by the AA, 43.26% strongly agreed that they had reduced their insurance costs by shopping around, with a further 13.36% indicating that this was somewhat true for them. However, 12.98% of those who shopped around

indicated they had been unsuccessful in securing a lower price.

“Sometimes it may be the case that your current insurer is the one able to offer you the best price, but broadly speaking most people are likely to see some form of a saving by putting some time into making contact with other providers.

Even if you’re happy with your renewal price, it’s important to be loyal to your own wallet first and see if there are potential savings out there for you,” Faughnan added. “While it’s equally important to check the level of cover you are receiving and not simply fall in love with the cheapest price, getting into the habit of shopping around on your insurance products could help keep more money in your wallet and ensure you’re not overpaying for your cover.”
