A little bit of history was made over the weekend as the first ordination in over 800 years took place in St Nicholas Parish Church (known locally as The Green Church).

Reverend Captain Geoffrey Walmsley was ordained a deacon on Friday evening in what was the first ordination in the church since September 24, 1214.

Rev Walmsley has been the acting pastor in charge of the Dundalk Union of Parishes which includes Heynestown, Ballymascanlon, Bush and Creggan (Armagh) since 2014 when he succeeded Rev Sandra Pragnall.

Counting cost of FAI Cup tie

By Paul Byrne Dundalk FC have been left counting the cost of Sunday’s FAI Cup semi-final clash with Shamrock Rovers after fans of the Dublin club caused significant damage to the Oriel Park pitch.

That was just one of a number of incidents involving the Rovers supporters whose behaviour was once again questioned following their latest visit to the town.

Man failed to escape drink driving charge A man who pleaded not guilty to a charge of drink driving was banned for three years after being convicted at Dundalk District Court.

Jason Lambe (25) of Carnroe, Kilkerley, argued through his solicitor, Roger McGinley, that as the investigating Garda twice lost sight of the car he was pursuing, he could

May 19 this year, Gardai observed a VW Passat driving at speed on the Castletown Road.

He turned and followed the car onto the Ecco Road and into Aisling Park.

He saw the car coming to a stop and spoke to Mr Lambe who was driving.

He noticed a smell of alcohol and asked the de-

fendant to provide a sample but he twice refused, stating that he was not driving.

The Garda stated that despite only getting a partial number plate when he first saw the car and briefly losing sight of it on two occasions, he was sure it was the same car.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that in any event the

offence related to the Aisling Park where the car stopped and not where it was initially observed.

Evidence had been given of Mr Lambe driving in that location.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he accepted the Garda evidence and convicted the defendant.

The 25-year-old welder was also fined €75.

Niall McGahan (35) of Annies, Kilcurry, was banned from the road for three years after pleading guilty to drink driving on June 9 this year when he was stopped by Gardai at Nicholas St, Dundalk Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €75 fine and postponed the disqualification until January 19.

Success for Team Torres

The Team Torres Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team had something of a red letter day at the recent National Irish NoGI Open Championships where despite having only 18 competitors enter the event this year they managed to come away with an incredible haul of 16 medals (9 Gold, 2 Silver and

5 Bronze). Based on these outstanding achievements they came away with the award , for the second year in a row, for the ‘Best Academy in Ireland’.

More medals for Cuchulainn CC Ballyhoua in County Limerick played host to the Irish Marathon Champions on Sunday September 24th. The main event featured 65km of tough mountain road and track, which took well over three hours for the leaders to complete. It proved a fruitful day for Cuchulainn’s off road cyclists with the club picking up two medals.

In the senior event Ravensdale’s Ray O`Shaughnessy claimed the silver behind Gareth McKee of Banbridge.

Man caused disturbance in court A man who was causing a disturbance during a court case found himself brought before the local District Court where he was given a two-month suspended sentence.

Michael O’Hagan (49) of 48 Mary St North, Dundalk had pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Judge John Coughlan.

He represented himself after a number of solicitors stated that they had professional difficulty in acting for the defendant.

A Garda witness stated that on June 1 last year Mr O’Hagan was causing an annoyance during a Circuit Court case. He refused to leave when requested and

when asked his name he said he was Tommy Tiernan.

The defendant asked the judge to read documents he had in court but Judge Coughlan refused as he imposed the suspended sentence.

Mr O’Hagan, who earlier said he was guilty of nothing, commented that it was ‘disgusting’ and ‘shameful’.

Garry all set for Euros

The Irish amputee football squad arrived in Turkey on Sunday afternoon ahead of the European Championships which began on Monday. The squad includes local man Garry Hoey who is one of the most experienced players in the squad.

Garry has been playing amputee football since 2012 when he joined the Irish Amputee Football Association. He made his International debut against Great Britain in Limerick the following year and has since travelled all over the world playing with the national team including competing at the World Cup in Mexico in 2014.

Since his international debut in 2013 Garry has become one of the most impressive players in the country and he was amongst a select few chosen to represent the University of Limerick in the English Amputee Football Association League (EAFA).

Garry and his Ireland teammates have been handed a tough draw at the European Championships with a group that includes World Champions Russia, England and Greece. Ireland need to finish in the top six to claim a place in next year’s World Cup. Although they have been handed the toughest of groups confidence is still high amongst the group ac-

cording to Garry.

“We are all really looking forward to the start of the championships. We are staying in a top-class resort with super facilities and we feel we are ready to do ourselves justice. We probably weren’t ready as a group for the last major tournament we played (World Cup 2014) but we’ve progressed since then and we feel we’re a much better side now. It’s been a long nine months training in the University of Limerick for this, and we know it’s a tough group but we believe in ourselves and the backroom staff,” stated Garry.

Ireland began their tournament yesterday with a tough opener against Russia and will face off against England today and Greece tomorrow. Eligible players only have one standing foot and cannot control the ball with their crutches or residual limb. The games are seven-a-side and are played on a half-sized football pitch over 25-minute halves.

Artisans is an art group whose members paint mainly in watercolour although artists of all media are welcome. Founded in the early 1990s the group meets once a week in Carroll Mead Hall, McEntee Ave, Dundalk. The group has around 30 members. The meetings run from 7:30pm to 9:30pm each Friday.

Artisans hold an Annual Exhibition every June in the Louth County Library, Dundalk. Here members are given the opportunity to display their creative endeavours.

Members manage to combine a social programme with their regular painting workshops.

Activities can include painting

DVD evenings, a Bring and Buy Sale, demonstrations by guest professional artists etc.

Classes for new members start on Friday October 6 at 7:30pm.

The Louth U12 Ladies team came together in June 2017 for The Leinster A Blitz. The girls came runner up in this blitz. The panel this year is made up of 53 young ladies who hail from 16 clubs around the county. The girls have diligently attended training sessions throughout the summer and it has clearly paid off. On Saturday 16th Sept, 47 of the girls set off at 7am for Portlaoise for the Leinster B Blitz. They entered two teams and

faced counties Meath, Wicklow, Kildare, Laois, Carlow, Offaly, Loch Garman and Garden County. The Louth B team were tied for a place in the final after four matches and narrowly missed out on their place by one point. They were quickly over to support of A team who had secured a place in the final against Meath. The girls were all soaked and cold having been playing in the rain all day but they managed to defeat Meath to claim the title at

the top of their grouping.

The girls all worked tirelessly and with a great attitude throughout the summer and it clearly paid off. Well done to all of the girls throughout the season.

A special word of thanks to all of the parents who travelled to all matches throughout the summer to support the girls rain or shine.

Upcoming events at Dundalk Library Dundalk Library will host the Europe Direct National Soapbox Competition on Thursday October 17 at 7pm on the topic, ‘Brexit: Ireland’s Opportunity’, chaired by Marian Harkin MEP. Applicants must give a three-minute speech for or against the topic and the competition is open to those aged 18 and under and 19 and over. Winners in each category will then go forward to compete in the national final in Dublin in November. All are welcome to attend.

County Museum celebrates Dundalk FC with ‘One Team, One Dream’ exhibition

League of Ireland champions Dundalk FC have been honoured in their home town with an exhibition at County Museum Dundalk celebrating the club’s history, entitled ‘One Team, One Dream’.

With more than 50 trophy wins – including 12 League Championships and 10 FAI Cups - Dundalk FC has a rich sporting history.

This is celebrated in the exhibition, which features a wall of 49 of Dundalk FC’s greatest ever players, including cult heroes Tommy McConville, Barry Kehoe and Jimmy Hasty. Brief biographical details of all players accompany the images on the wall.

Speaking at the launch, museum curator, Brian Walsh said:

“We’ve been extremely fortunate to work with Jim Murphy, author of ‘The History of Dundalk FC – The First 100 Years’, to develop this exhibition. While working on it, we’ve been struck how the club has been a rite of passage for many people - parents who brought their children to games, who in turn brought their children, who now bring their children and so on. In a rapidly changing world, to have this tradition, this common interest and passion is something very valuable.”

Other exhibition highlights include: The jersey worn by former Dundalk FC goalkeeper, Charlie Tizard during a match between

the League of Ireland XI and the Irish League XI in 1939.

A set of medals won by former Dundalk FC centre-forward, Jimmy McArdle - including an All-Ireland minor medal won with Louth in 1936, and an FAI Cup medal won with Dundalk in 1942.

A jersey won by former Dundalk FC defender, Tommy McConville while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

A collection of medals, trophies and pennants won by the club over the years.

‘One Team, One Dream’ is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm at County Museum Dundalk, and entry is free.

New Mandatory Car Emissions Tests From September 1st As of 1 September 2017, new car models will have to pass new and more reliable emissions tests in real driving conditions ("Real Driving Emissions" – RDE) as well as an improved laboratory test ("World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure" – WLTP) before they can be driven on European roads. Vincent Conlon (8) is the Golfer of the Year after he held on to edge out Peter Rogers (2) and Jim Dwyer (8) following the final counting competition.

The Golfer of the Year is based on the seven best results from 13 competitions across the season starting with last April’s Gold Medal Qualifier.

Conlon finished on 507 which represents a stroke average of 72.43 while Rogers and Dwyer were on 509 with a stroke average of 72.71.

Top ten finishers were: 507 – Vincent Conlon (8); 509 – Peter Rogers (2), Jim Dwyer (8); 513 – Brian Mernagh (12); 514 – Connor McCaughey (5), Carl Stewart (9); 516 – Sean Quigley (18); 518 – Paddy Duffy (13), Terry Conlon (6); 519 – Shane Hession (6).

Rogers was also pipped for Sunday’s Jubilee Cup as he lost out on countback to Liam Mernagh (13) despite shooting a nett 67 off a handicap of two.

St. Vincent’s Transition Year students spent four action packed days in Colaiste Acla on Achill Island recently.

The girls braved the Wild Atlantic Way as they participated in bogsnorkelling, kayaking, cliff jumping, surfing and body-boarding. Alongside

these exciting activities the entire group also embraced the challenge of a 25km mountain hike as part of their adventure journey for their Bronze Gaisce Award.

The Gaisce, or President’s Award is a personal development programme for young people aged 15-25 to dream

big and fulfil their potential. The hike encouraged the students to step out of their comfort zone and was a positive first step on their Gaisce journey.

Woman got bad beating after row with boyfriend A woman who got into a verbal argument with her then boyfriend was subjected to a ‘bad beating’ after she tried to walk away.

As a result, Oliver Garvey of 262 Cedarwood Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, was convicted in his absence

of assault causing harm at Dundalk District Court.

The court heard from the woman that on April 9, 2014, she had been out for a drink with Mr Garvey on the way home they got into an argument. She stated that after she walked away he followed

her down an alleyway and assaulted her, including kicking her on the ground.

She told the defence solicitor, Frank McDonnell, that she had five pints on the night but wasn’t extremely intoxicated.

victim was not very intoxicated and that she was only hysterical due to the incident.

Dundalk student, Harry Foley from De La Salle College, Dundalk, was one of 36 exceptional students across the country awarded with a €20,000 Naughton Foundation Scholarship at a ceremony in Trinity College Dublin on Saturday.

Harry’s now former school was also presented with a prize of €1000 towards their school’s science facilities. Harry has also accepted a place at National University of Ireland, Gal-

way where he will study Engineering. The clever student achieved a H1 in Technology, Chemistry, Physics and Applied Maths. According to the Dundalk student he initially thought it was a prank when he got the phone call to say that he had won the prestigious scholarship.

“I got a phone call two weeks ago from the Naughton Foundation.

I couldn’t believe the news. My Mam, Angela, was sure it was a prank call and it took a while for it to sink in.

“I found out about the

scholarship through the school. Martin Naughton was actually a past pupil of the De La Salle.

Lord Hareford has passed away and his will reveals the shocking news that he sired an illegitimate heir during a youthful dalliance with a working class woman. The heir is tracked down and brought to Hareford Hall for the family's inspection and they discover, to their horror, that he is Bill Snibson (Anthony Fitzpatrick), a common cockney from the London parish of Lambeth. After an extensive search he has been located by the family solicitor Herbert Parchester (Martin Gogarty). Most of them want nothing to do with him, but the Duchess of Dene (Orlaith Crosbie) is determined to make a gentleman of the young man and to separate him from his sweetheart Sally (Orla Sheridan). But can they all live happily ever after? You'll have to come along to find out. Other roles are played by Dominic Keating, Karyn McCooey, Gerry O'Hara, Olive Curran, Brian Halpin and James Brennan along with the 40 strong chorus of singers and dancers. With well-loved classic songs including The Lambeth Walk and Leaning on a Lamp Post, Me and My Girl was brilliantly updated by Stephen Fry in 1986 for a run that won a hatful of Olivier, Drama Desk and Tony Awards, this is a show not to be missed.

First ordination in over 800 years Continued from page 1

“We got information from local historian Noel Ross who does a lot of work with the historical society and he informed us that the last ordination was carried out by the Bishop of Clonmacnoise on the 24th September 1214. That meant Geoffrey was the first to be ordained in exactly 803 years.

“At that stage there was three priests in the area and there was quite a large Presbyterian

presence.

“However, in the intervening years the numbers have dwindled and because of that all the ordinations took place in the north.

“In 2005 we got a rector and an assistant minister and the Dundalk Union of Parishes has grown to the extent that we are at the stage where Geoffrey was ordained on Friday evening,” explained Rev Moore.

Geoffrey originally hails from Kilkeel and came to Dun-

dalk from Banbridge in 2014.

Banbridge was his first appointment since studying theology in Sheffield, Yorkshire.

Over the past three years he has spoken about the importance of cross community relations and has opened the doors of The Green Church to all sectors of the community.

Now that he has been ordained a deacon Reverend Walmsley will continue studying for his masters in the Theological College Dublin.

AA calls for end to austerityera taxes as fuel prices climb

AA Ireland has called on the Irish government to consider reducing the tax rate on petrol and diesel in the upcoming Budget.

According to the motoring organisation’s latest fuel prices survey the average price of a litre of petrol is 134.9c , up 2.5c since August.

Meanwhile, a litre of diesel currently costs .122.0c on avarage, up 2.3c per litre on August’s prices.

oil prices internationally may be outside of our government’s control, they do have the power to alter how much tax is placed on fuel and to remove the so-called “emergency-era” taxes,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “During the worst years of the recession close to 20c worth of additional taxes was introduced on both fuel and diesel and while we’re being told by our Government that the emergency is over, the taxes it brought live on.”

The motoring organisation has also outlined its opposi-

tion to proposed increases on excise duty for diesel in order to bring the price in line with that of petrol.

“Encouraging people to move away from diesel cars has been a key priority of our government in recent years, but increasing the tax on diesel is not the way to go about achieving this. Many of those who currently own diesel cars purchased these vehicles at the government’s behest so it’s simply not fair to now punish them for doing what they had previously been told to do,” Faughnan added. “Instead, of increasing taxes on diesel to bring the

price closer to that of petrol, if the government is sincere in its efforts they should instead consider reducing the tax on petrol. If the government instead persists with the discussed increase in taxes on diesel then it will underline that the priority here is generating additional revenue, not encouraging people to move away from diesel powered vehicles.”

Rising crude oil costs have been identified as the main factor in the increased fuel prices, with the cost of a barrel of oil having risen by approximately $5 since late August.
