Dundalk boxing sensation Amy Broadhurst was forced to settle for bronze at last weekend’s European Women’s Elite Championships in Madrid, Spain. Amy defeated highly rated Russian Anastasia Beliakova to guarantee herself at least a bronze medal but fell short against experienced Finn Mika Potkonen at the semi-final stage.

Potkonen is well known to Irish boxing fans as the fighter who defeated then reigning Olympic champion Katie Taylor at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Amy dropped a weight class to compete in the 60kg lightweight division after world champion Kellie Harrington was sidelined with a thumb injury. “I have daily problems trying to use the parking outside my house.

Every day somebody else parks there, sometimes all day. A lot of this situation was brought about by the council installing a cycle lane in St Mary’s Road.

This then forced half the cars in the street to go looking for parking elsewhere, including outside my house,” he explained.

“The cycle lane starts nowhere and ends nowhere, and as I’m a cyclist I am experienced in these things, and I’m appalled at the haphazard installation of cycle lanes, all over the town. From what I can see every one of them starts and ends nowhere. The parking in this area becomes an even more serious problem when the schools open.

“I am 86 years old, and although I ride a bike to keep fit, I am unable to walk more than 50 metres, so when the parking at my house is blocked off I have nowhere to go as I cannot park

“I wrote to the County Manager, asking for help, but although I sent my letter twice it never got a response. All I asked for was a small yellow box, or even a double yellow line outside my house, but I am disappointed not to have received a response,” explained Ray. Meanwhile Louth County Council stated that parking spots outside people’s houses can only be reserved in specific cases such as loading bays or disabled parking bays.

“The roadway in front of a houses is a public road and is not available for reservation other than for specific uses specified in the roads acts such as loading bays or disabled parking.

Even where disabled parking spaces

are provided, those spaces are available to all persons with a disabled badge and cannot be specifically reserved for a single individual.

“Nevertheless, the provision of a disabled bay in front of, or close to, a disabled badge holder’s house generally provides a greater opportunity to that person to avail of parking close to their home,” read the statement.

Dundalk Swimming Club Awards Night

Aura Dundalk Swimming Club recently held their annual awards night and end of season party after what has been another memorable season for the club which was established by a group of parents in November 2011 with 16 members and has now almost 50 members.

The coaching team is made up of our Head Coach Rafal Rutkowski and a team of hugely committed volunteer coaches, Collette Donnelly, Gerry Martin, Alan McEvoy and Conall Kelly who all received gifts from the Club Committee on behalf of the parents.

The quality of the coaching that the young swimmers receive was again evidenced by the club’s fantastic season where they had 10 swimmers compete at the Irish Nationals Division 2 finals in Limerick University and a record five swimmers at the Irish Division One Summer Nationals in the Na-

tional Aquatic Centre in Dublin.

This is a massive achievement for this ambitious local club, which is developing an enviable track record of success in producing top class athletes who are capable of challenging the best at Ireland’s top National and International swimming events.

Following the last training event of the season, the club’s swimmers gathered at Aura Leisure Centre for the end of season party and the all-important 2018/2019 awards.

First up, the club’s Child Officers (Shauna Mullen and Caroline Logan) awarded the Swim Ireland Club Youth Awards to Sean O’Rourke, Julia Van Coller, Adrijana Viliuste, Skye Kasozi, Amelie Friel, Sadhbh Mullen, Aoibheann Conway and Conor Goss. The Club Youth Awards recognise excellence in the area of teamwork, effort, behaviour, helping and attendance.

Volunteers wanted for ‘Childline’ Children and young people often need more help and support than we realise with increasing stresses on young lives through bullying, social media and abuse. Its important that supports are in place to help. Childline, Irelands national listening service for children and young people, is recruiting for volunteers in Dundalk and the greater Louth area. Last year over 310,000 contacts had contact from children and young people who call, chat online, or text the service.

They will hold an infor-

mation session for anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering with the service. The session will take place at the ChildLine unit at Distillery House, Dyer Street, Drogheda, on Wednesday 4th of September at 7pm.

Childline offers children a 24-hour free, confidential and non-judgemental listening service to every child and young person up to the age of 18 in Ireland. Volunteers who help children do not require any prior experience or qualifications.

They complete comprehensive training before

answering their first contact and receive ongoing support and upskilling for the duration of their time as a volunteer. Childline volunteers’ complete weekly four-hour shifts and facilitate Childline’s 24-hour phone line, live text and webchat services.

Awards for GSD students Students from GSD School of Drama enjoyed another highly successful year which included many individual awards and a memorable production.

The school had an amazing 2018-2019 term with students winning awards, and excelling in exams through the Leinster School of Music & Drama according to Geraldine Kieran.

“This year students participated in several competition and we also had six students receive medals for their end of year exams with Leinster School of Music & Drama. To be awarded such an honour is really evidence of all the consistent hard work students put into their drama over the academic year. It’s testament to

their discipline and passion for speech and drama,” stated Geraldine.

The school held yet another fantastic production “ A Million Dreams” on the main stage of An Tain Arts centre last June.

“We worked really hard over a three month period on last summers show. It was very much a celebration of the chil-

dren and their drama work,” she added.

The school is now taking bookings for new interested students.

Also they will hold an open evening Wednesday September 4 from 4pm to 6pm in Creative Spark.

Geraldine’s School of Drama will reopen its doors this September 7 at their main studios in

Creative Spark. They have reintroduced many courses for different ages and drama levels including musical theatre and creative drama, while they will continue with pre-school drama course for little ones and speech and drama classes.

Call for more support for rural pubs Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has said the closure of 35 pubs in Louth, along with the increase in the number of offlicences, was a worrying trend and he called on more support for rural pubs.

“Pubs are often the social hub of towns and communities, pro-

viding meeting spots for birthdays, christenings, communions and funerals. They provide for the local economy in terms of job creating and the tourism and hospitality sector,” he stated.

“It’s important to note there has been an 11.6% rise in the number of off-licences in this same period.

This suggests people are choosing to drink at home rather than in the pub because it is cheaper. This is a worrying trend, as we know pubs play an important role in tackling loneliness and isolation, and we may need to look at our alcohol excise tax to stop this decline,” he stated.

CúChulainn Archers continue fine form James Moloney of CúChulainn Archers was one of the 600 archers who competed at the European Field Archery Championships in Holland last week.

The competition was held in and around the Castle Doorwerth area over 5 days. This was James’ first time to compete at the E.F.A.C. and he shot very well, finishing seventh in the Bowhunter Recurve Class.

This is a different style of competition to the normal 3D Round, but James is already looking forward to the next one of this type as he says it is very

rewarding.

In horrific conditions the weekend before last, three of CúChulainn archers competed in the final qualifier for the All Ireland Series which was held in Harbour House in Kildare.

Despite the atrocious weather Éamonn Rogers won, with Deirdre Rogers coming third and Brendan Forde going out in the quarter finals. All three have now qualified for the All Ireland Series Finals, which will take place in September.

Last weekend the third in the club competition took place with beginners, intermediate

and experienced archers pitted against each other in the popular Handicap Shoot.

These series of competitions are invaluable as training for hosting national competitions, as each one is hosted by a different member of the club.

They are also a great help to new archers who have never been to competition, as they are run in the exact same manner as a national competition.

The archers each receive a handicap which levels the playing field and means that absolutely anyone can win as long as they score to their

strength.

In the event, Mark O’Connor won Gold for the beginners, with Ciaran Flanagan (Gold), Ann Marie Murray, - who has returned to her first love and is shooting barebow once again - Silver and Éamonn Rogers Bronze.

The lovely day was finished off with a barbecue organised

by John Keenan and the food cooked by Mark’s dad.

Former captain departs Oriel Dundalk Football Club can confirm that chief opposition analyst Stephen O’Donnell has left the club to take up the role of head coach at St Patrick’s Athletic FC. The 33-year-old former Lilywhites captain joined head coach Vinny Perth’s backroom team in January after calling time on an illustrious playing career that saw him win six league titles, four of them at Oriel Park.

After signing for Dundalk from Shamrock Rovers at the end of 2012, O’Donnell became a key figure in a period of dominance for the Lilywhites, winning four league titles, two FAI Cups and two EA Sports Cups in six seasons, whilst also playing a key role

in Dundalk’s famous European run in 2016.

The Galwegian hung up his playing boots at the end of last season and has since played an important role in Dundalk’s new management team as chief opposition analyst, travelling around Ireland and Europe to help to prepare the squad for games this season.

Head coach Vinny Perth thanked O’Donnell for his contribution to the management team this season and paid tribute to the part he played in Dundalk’s success on the pitch in recent years.

He said: “When Stevie arrived here seven years ago, it’s fair to say that a lot of people had things to prove in their career. He’s cer-

tainly proved them. He’s been a major asset for Dundalk as captain and I just want to thank him for his role in the management team.

“He’s been a big help for what we’ve done so far and, if we achieve anything this year, he will have played a part in that, there is no doubt. We wish him well for the future.”

Dundalk FC chief executive Mark Devlin said: “Stephen O’Donnell will be remembered as one of Dundalk’s all-time greats.

In his six years as a player at Oriel Park, he played a big part in transforming the club through his professionalism on and off the pitch and he will always be held in great affection by staff and supporters.”

Fleadh volunteers celebrate

Fleadh volunteers who gathered to celebrate a memorable event in Louth

Local Fleadh Volunteers were among the hundreds who gathered in the Westcourt Hotel in Drogheda on Tuesday August to celebrate the success of Fleadh Cheoil and their contribution to that success.

Over 250 volunteers from all across Louth and beyond came together for a night of music, dancing and chat. The Westcourt Hotel provided a complimentary champagne reception while music was provided by the everpopular Wednesday Gang.

Many local businesses contributed prizes for a raffle held on the night, and those firms praised the volunteers and wanted it to be conveyed how impressed they were by them over the course of the week of the Fleadh.

Lolo Robinson spoke at the event as Chair of the Fleadh Executive Committee, and said that the volunteers were fantastic and each and every one of them did their county proud.

Many of the volunteers in attendance spoke about what a positive experience they had had with one volunteer, Jack, stating that it was the ‘Best Fleadh ever, I was privileged to be a volunteer’ while another, Anne, noted that she ‘had a great experience and met loads of wonderful people, both volunteers and public’.

Blackrock Tidy Towns Heritage Event Blackrock Tidy Towns Heritage Event for 2019 takes place in the Community Centre at 8pm today (Wednesday September 4).

The event will comprise two elements themed on the passage

of time - a showing of local film producer Cara Holmes’ movie “Blackrock - A Meander Through Time”, and Noel Sharkey’s latest collection of old photographs entitled “Blackrock/Haggardstown

- Townlands Through Time”.

Cara’s movie premiered at their Heritage Week event in 2010 and features old footage from the parish as well as commentary from the 2000s, while Noel’s

presentation will cover the evolution of the parish through its townlands up to recent times with previously unseen old photos.

Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to come along.

Families left in dark as school bus uncertainty continues Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has called on the Minister for Education to intervene to ensure that students will be able to avail of places on school buses, regardless of concessionary status.

“I have been inundated with calls from parents this week who have been told there is no room on the school bus for their

child. Many of these parents had paid for the service months ago, only to now be told no there is no space and they will be refunded.

They do not want a refund; they want to know their child will be able to get to school,” he stated.

“The Minister for Education has announced more funding for school buses while the Minister for Fi-

nance has said he hasn’t approved this. It’s farcical.”

“Only 24,000 of the 30,000 applications for a concessionary seat have been granted, and the remaining 6,000 should be granted immediately to give parents the certainty that their child can get to school,” continued Mr Breathnach.

David Larkin was installed as the new President of the Dundalk Lions Club last week at a handover dinner where he received his chains of office from outgoing President John Hennessy.

Dundalk man David has been a member of the Lions Club in Dundalk since 2016 and during the presentation he stated that he was looking forward to continuing the good work of the club during his year in office.

“I am absolutely honoured to be a part of the Dundalk Lions Club who I feel do some brilliant work in our locality.

people in the club who have given decades of service voluntarily and I know that they have made a huge difference to many people’s lives around Dundalk over the years.

“The club has been serving Dundalk since 1977 and we will continue to do so. Of course it is nice to be given the role of President but I must emphasise that the

Lions Club is very much a community organisation with volunteers who try to do their best to help people in need locally.,” he explained.

“Not much will change in my role really. I will chair the meetings but in general I will be doing the same things as I’ve done before and everybody in the club will continue to fundraise and

try to get some money in to support our two big signature events which we have each year.

“Every year we have our annual Senior Citizens and Carers holiday to the west which provides a welcome few days away for about 150 people. We actually have our annual table quiz fundraiser for that event September 27 which will take place in

Kennedy’s Pub on the Carrick Road.

“And our other major undertaking is of course our Christmas Food Collection which provides up to 350 hampers to the community each year. I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody in and around Dundalk for their continuing generosity each year which enables us to help those in need and also to the local businesses for their sponsorship which is vital to ensure we can keep on supporting the community.

“I look forward to my year as President and once again all of us here in the Lion’s Club would like to thank everybody who support us year after year,” stated David.

Erin McGreehan challenges Peig Needham Music Bursaries 2019 Phil Hogan at summer school

Erin McGreehan has challenged EU Commissioner Phil Hogan on his backing of the Mercosur Trade Deal when they met at the D’Arcy McGee Summer School recently.

The Fianna Fail councillor described the deal as “placing the death-nail into beef farming and rural communities” and made her feelings known when she attended the Summer School to discuss Brexit, the European Union and to take part in an open forum.

The Mercosur Trade Deal is the largest deal ever struck by the European Union and has taken over 20 years to negotiate. The Mercosur Countries are a block of South American Countries which include Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay.

Councillor McGreehan highlighted that the beef industry in

Ireland has been dramatically hit since the Brexit crisis.

“With all the uncertainties and low prices, beef farmers are struggling to keep their heads above water, and now to add insult to injury this trade deal is continuously being pushed by our own commissioner.

“Over the past weeks beef farmers have been protesting all across the country due to the serious threat to their livelihoods.

“This is down to the collapse in prices which is not helped by drop in sterling caused

by Brexit,” she stated.

Mr Hogan dismissed McGreehan by saying that “she doesn’t read all the facts”.

It was a lively debate but an undeterred Cllr McGreehan reiterated that “this trade deal is bad for beef farmers and bad for rural communities”.

In 1995 following the untimely death of wellknown flute player Peig Needham a music bursary fund was established to commemorate her.

Peig McGrath, as she was better known in traditional music circles, was very much involved with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Craobh Dhún Dealgan and annually the branch awards bursaries to young branch members to support them in their musical studies.

This year the recipients were Ella Poole (Fiddle) Knockbridge, Sophie Carr (Concertina) Belfry Drive Dundalk, Ruairi Reynolds (Guitar / Whistle) Knockbridge, Rachel Dooley (Harp) Dromiskin, and Michael Kirby (Fiddle) from Kilkerley. Over the years dozens of young musicians from the branch have benefited from the bursaries with several going on to win All Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

Branch enrolment for classes for the 2019/2020 season will be held on Monday night September 9 in the Oriel Centre (Dundalk Gaol) commencing at 7pm.

Four arrested following collision after Garda pursuit

Four arrests have been made following an incident on the Point Road on Sunday evening.

Gardaí on patrol in Dundalk, Co. Louth, observed a car acting suspiciously on Sunday 1st September 2019 at approximately 10pm. After failing to stop for Gardaí, a short pursuit ensued.

A minor collision occurred between the vehicles in the Point

Road area of Dundalk & a Garda member received minor injuries.

Four men were arrested at the scene, 2 were aged in their late teens and 2 in their 20s. They are currently detained at Dundalk Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing.

Gardaí are also investigating an incident on Jocelyn Street on Saturday morning which saw a

male rob a shop with what has been described as a handgun on his person. The man who had a scarf over his face entered the shop on Jocelyn St. at approximately 9am before threatening staff and making off with a sum of money. Anybody who saw or knows anything about the incident are asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station.

Dundalk award winning youth theatre MAD Youth Theatre are hosting their ninth open day.

They are inviting young people ages 12 to 21 years old who have an interest in drama to join them on Thursday September 12 at 5:30pm to 7:30pm to see what youth theatre is all about.

MAD Youth Theatre is a place where a young person can explore a variety of skills, engage in the arts and take part in the fun social activities. It’s more that just drama, we focus in social, personal and artistic development of our members.

Andrew takes the honours at Dundalk Andrew Cumiskey won the Knights of Malta Cup on Sunday when he shot a four under par 68 on the club’s formidable blue course in what was the penultimate round of the Golfer of the Year competition.

The 15 handicapper had one shot to spare over Billy Cairns (5) as Zak Alderdice (4), Pat McGuinness (15) and Noel McGuinness (129) took the category prizes.

Senior Panel member Conor Curran (1) was in fine form over the weekend as he shot 38pts to win Saturday’s Singles Stableford and then shot 70 on Sunday to win the Gross Prize in the

Knights of Malta Cup. Conal Mullin (21) was another player who had a good weekend as he won the Juvenile Prize in both weekend competitions.

Teenager Zak Alderdice (5) continued his recent fine run by shooting 42pts to win Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition.

Among those he left in his wake was Walker Cup player Caolan Rafferty (+6) who warmed up for this week’s event in Hoylake by shooting 39pts to record the best gross score. On Sunday, Alderdice, now playing off four, shot a two under par 70 to take the Category 1 prize in the Knights of

Malta Cup. Aaron Grant warmed up for the Barton Shield All-Ireland Finals by finishing second behind Irish international and newly crowned Irish Close Champion Ronan Mullarney of Galway in the Westport Scratch Cup. The Co Mayo course is the venue for the All-Ireland Finals on Friday, September 20.

Jonesboro Charity Cycle presentation

The Jonesboro Charity Cycle which took place earlier this summer, presented the funds raised to the nominated charities.

This year the committee had its best year to date as they hit the £50,000 mark and this brings the total raised since the event began to near £300,000. This was made possible by a hard working committee, the work of the nominated charities in filling and returning sponsor cards and of course mainly due to the kindness of local businesses which donate amounts from £100 to £2,500 every year when a committee member asks.

This year 17 groups benefitted from donations including SNAP in Louth and The Order of Malta receive an A.E.D presented by K.C construction and Edenappa fuels.

Irish motorists guilty of locking more than keys in their car

Recently release figures from AA Rescue found that the organisation dealt more than one case a day on average where a child had been locked into a car accidentally in 2018. While keys being locked inside the vehicle has long been an annoyance for motorists, the figures from the breakdown assistance provider found that Irish motorists were guilty of accidentally locking both passengers and animals in their car on a regular basis.

In 2018 alone, AA Rescue attended to 460 cases of a child being locked into the car, along with 359 times where a dog had locked itself into an owner’s vehicle. In addition to the high volume of callouts to trapped children and dogs, the breakdown assistance provider was also called out to 5 cases where a member’s spouse was accidentally locked into a car, along with one case of a trapped lamb.

“For any parent I think there are few things more

worrying than when you accidentally lock one of your children into your car but it’s something that can happen more easily than you think.

Quite often these cases start off with a parent innocently giving a baby or child they keys to play with while they pack some shopping into the boot,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. Next thing the parent knows they close the boot, the child presses a button on the fob that they shouldn’t and panic

ensues. The good news is that we are used to dealing with incidents like this and will always give priority to a case where a child or animal is locked in the car.

“While people locking their spouse into the car doesn’t happen that often, it is something our patrols still see. It is embarrassing for anyone but it has a funny side, unless it causes rows after we leave!”

Despite changes in modern technology, AA Rescue still attended to 2,038 cases of keys being

locked into a car, with many of these occurring between May and September. The figure represents a slight decrease on 2017, where the AA attended to over 2,300 such cases.

“Modern cars make it more difficult for the driver to accidentally lock the keys inside, it is still something that we are seeing on a regular basis. On average we deal with cases of keys being locked into the car six times a day and despite our reassurances, everyone who finds themselves in this situation feels like they’re the first person to have ever done it,” Faughnan added. “Every time a member calls us to let us know they have locked their keys into the car you can almost hear in their voice that they feel like they’ve taken over the role of the village idiot. However, the good news is we’re used to dealing with these cases and our experienced patrols are more than happy to help.”
