“A lot of people told me that it was a wellknown landmark where couples would arrange to meet. One woman stopped to tell me that she regularly met her boyfriend there as she didn’t want her parents to find out.

“Another man revealed that the post box reminded him of both very happy and sad times in his life. It was from that box that his family would send news to relatives in America about events such as births and weddings, but sadly it was also the place they would have to post news of someone’s death.

“It was also pointed out that the box would have had a first hand view of major events in history such as when Frank Aiken led the escape from the jail by blowing up the wall”, added Pat.

Pat McGinn at the post box at The Crescent

importance in historical terms but also as part of the social fabric of the town.

As a result of his efforts, the post box can be briefly seen in its original red as it would have appeared on the street roughly 110 years ago when it was first installed.

Pat, who owns A1 Locksmiths, was carrying out routine maintenance on the post box when he noticed that the tar placed at the bottom of the box for protection had covered up lettering.

His curiosity saw him expose the lettering and he discovered that it was made by Handyside & Co of Derby one of the

world’s most famous engineering companies that produced goods used throughout the British Commonwealth, including lamposts, post boxes, bridges, and the iron fencing around the Houses of Parliament.

Pat also discovered that the post box was from the Edward VII’s reign and the fact that he was only from 1901 to 1910 means that it is a relatively rare item, but from a social point of view it played a very important role in the community.

They call it the Oscars of the cocktail industry and this year a local man was proudly flying the flag for Co. Louth as he travelled to New Orleans to sample the wonder that is ‘Tales of the Cocktail’.

Conor Myers from Hackballscross has been blazing a trail in the bar game in Ireland and is considered one of the finest barmen in the country having been picked as one of the ten finalists in last year’s Bacardi Legacy cocktail competition.

The talented 23 year old cut his teeth in Eno’s restaurant in Jocelyn St before moving to Dublin where he is now head bartender in the upmarket Exchequer Bar in Dublin city centre. Conor entered his signature cocktail called ‘The Last Straw’ (Micil, Poitin, antica formula, ruby port, blood orange syrup and angostura/orange bitters) into the Bartenders project competition as he aimed to win a spot at the ‘Tales of the Cocktail’ awards in New Orleans.

‘Tales’ is legendary in bartending circles globally as the number one awards ceremony for bar tenders all around the world. The week long event includes seminars from some of the biggest names in the cocktail business as

According to Conor the trip has been one of the best experiences of his life and one which he will not forget in a hurry.

“I had an absolutely amazing week in New Orleans. I’ve attended some of the best parties ever thrown, spoke to some of the most influential people in our industry and made some great friends along the way.

“Thank you so much New Orleans, you’ve been amazing and have given me the best week of my life. I had heard so much about ‘Tales’ over the years and when it was announced that my cocktail had won the Bartenders project competition I was almost in shock as I knew how brilliant this trip would be. It’s lived up to all my expectations and more and I really hope to make it back again next year,” stated a delighted Conor.

Kids explore their creative side at summer camp July has been a fun month for all the children who attend summer camps at GSD ‘Drama studios. The school held two themed workshops, the first focused on ‘Page to stage’ and the second “Express yourself” camp focused on creative, expression and fun.

Taking a huge break from the standardised weekly drama, students focused on their creative side through arts and crafts such as mask making. Plus, storytelling with puppets, mime and improvisation work.

group of tweens decided not only to create a unique short drama but made a mini movie. This idea was last minute yet proved to be tremendous fun. All the

students created their own characters, scenes and plot.

The camp welcomed current and new students through its doors and according to Ger-

aldine Kieran, the summer is a great time to try out new activities and for children to make new friends.

“Our focus first and foremost is for children to have lots of fun, after that it’s about building confidence and cultivating creative energy.

Camps are so important during the summer months as they can help to keep children focused and active”, said Geraldine.

“The school will hold one more camp this summer acting for camera for young adults and its first ever Open day on August 13th to launch its autumn courses.”

A liar and a perjurer—Judge Brennan A man was branded a liar and a perjurer after he was found guilty of assault causing harm to a Garda during an attempt to arrest him, as he was sentenced to three months in prison.

After hearing the case against Niall Mackin (23) of 8 Patrick Tierney Crescent, Judge

Flann Brennan stated that he was in no doubt about his guilt, while he didn’t believe the evidence given by the defendant’s mother.

“He is a liar and a perjurer and I don’t believe a word from him.

Mrs Mackin is not much better. She would say anything and I wouldn’t

believe anything se tells me in this regard.

“I don’t have the slightest doubt that Niall Mackin assaulted Garda Jordan causing him harm”, stated the judge.

Judge Brennan refused a request to postpone sentencing as it might affect the defendant’s prospects of getting employment in the Army.

“I am not going to put it back as he has denied this. In the last

25 minutes he has taken the oath and given evidence that is a fabrication. This is a serious assault and he has a previous record. He was given a chance and won’t get one today. He acted like a thug on this occasion”, Judge Brennan said.

The court heard that on January 2 this year, Gardai were called to Patrick Tierney Crescent by Rhonda Mackin as her sons were fighting and she wanted Ni-

Gardai attempted to arrest him outside but he resisted violently.

He was handcuffed to the front but tripped Gda Jordan and then got him in a headlock as they attempted to put him into the Garda van. He caused injuries to the Garda’s face with the handcuffs.

The defendant and his mother stated that it would have been impossible for the Garda to be assaulted this way

as he had his hands cuffed behind his back.

It was suggested that the Garda suffered the injuries when he fell to the ground after the defendant accidentally stumbled.

Barrister James Egan was unsuccessful in his attempt to have the case struck out when stating that in order for an assault causing harm charge to be successful, the Garda would have to state in evidence that he did not give his con-

sent.

The defendant was also given a threemonth sentence after he admitted signing for a Social Welfare payment on behalf of his brother at Castletown Post Office on March 26 this year.

The court heard that his brother was in custody at the time and he wanted to money to use as bail.

Judge Brennan fixed recognisances in event of an appeal.

Another reduction of services at Louth Hospital Sinn Féin Councillor Tomás Sharkey has hit out at yet another reduction of services in Louth County Hospital.

“I have been informed that there is a curtailment of surgical theatre procedures in our local hospital in July and August due to difficulties in employing an anaesthetist.

“Every summer we see a

new cycle of appointments in our hospitals. This year was no exception and there was a problem recruiting an anaesthetist. I queried the RCSI management of our hospitals ad they admitted that theatre sessions in Dundalk have been reduced pending the appointment.

“Waiting lists for many

treatments in our hospitals are too long. This latest situation will make the waiting lists longer, cause continued pain and anxiety for patients and cost the state more money in the long run”, added Sharkey who stated that the health service had not improved under the new Government.

The annual Living with Cancer conference organised by the North East Cancer Research and Education Trust (NECRET) in conjunction with Drogheda Oncology and Hematology Unit will take place on Saturday September 17.

This event a public information day for those living with cancer and their families will return to the City North Hotel, Gormanston, Drogheda and will start from 1.30pm. Those at-

tending on the day can receive updates on the various types of cancer.

The event aims to have an interactive approach between attendees and health professionals and indeed others who may have experienced cancer and their experience of same. People can also avail of free complementary therapy workshops.

Professor Bryan Hennessy Consultant Oncologist in the Lourdes Oncology Unit which

serves patients from the Northeast including Louth, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan and north County Dublin will be joined by some of Ireland’s leading cancer specialists. These experts will discuss emerging developments and the newest treatments options available. Amongst those speakers last year were Chris O’Donoghue of Newstalk and celebrity chef Domini Kemp.

Both talked about their own battles with cancer.

Dundalk FC enjoyed its greatest ever night when they stunned the strongly fancied BATEBorisov to reach the last qualifying round of the Champions League.

On a night of raw emotion in Tallaght the Lilywhites continued their remarkable resurgence from the brink of

extinction to mixing it with the heavyweights of European football.

Superlatives do little justice to this magnificent achievement on a perfect evening that will live long in the memory.

Put simply, this was the combination of best ever Dundalk team, turning in their best ever display, under the astute guidance of their best

ever manager – and of course inspired by the best set of fans in the league.

The stunning and thoroughly deserved 3-0 demolition of the starstudded Belarusian side means that Dundalk are in footballing dreamland and are just one step away from reaching the Champions League proper.

Making the knock-out stages may have been a distant dream just a matter of weeks ago but, following the heroics in Tallaght, anything is now possible and nobody will be taking the challenge of Dundalk lightly.

Even the consolation prize of contesting the group stages of the Europa League is pretty mouth-watering as the Oriel Park club face at least eight more games against Europe’s elite.

The feel-good factor will extend well beyond Oriel and the whole town is sure to be buzzing right up to Christmas on the back of this magnificent achievement.

Of course there is also the small matter of the estimated €7m windfall which really is a gamechanger for Dundalk and is set to see the superblyrun club on a sound financial footing for years to come.

Even the most passionate fans will conceded that the one area where they cannot claim to be the best is in terms of the facilities at their

beloved Oriel Park. Perhaps the financial rewards offered by this run will see that particular issue addressed in the not too distant future.

It was as a consequence of those shortcomings that fans had to make the trip to Tallaght for this ‘home’ leg but they did so in their thousands as the capacity crowd produced a phenomenal atmosphere to spur their side to victory.

Even before the game there was a quiet confidence among the fans and that was mirrored by

the early exchanges on the pitch. For the next 90 minutes the team and fans seemed to take inspiration from each other and culminated in the total demoralisation of the shell-shocked visitors.

From the opening whistle, Dundalk were magnificent to a man, setting the tone by imposing their game on BATE and ensuring the visitors were unable to dominate as they had done the previous week.

Chances were difficult to come by in the first half but just on the stroke of half time, Dundalk

struck a hammer blow when Daryl Horgan’s brilliant cross was headed home by David McMillan.

Driven forward by brilliant captain, Stephen O’Donnell, the Lilywhites showed great courage to continue to push forward in the second half and it was no surprise when inspirational substitute Patrick McEleney danced through to allow Dane Massey set up McMillan for a second.

Dundalk were now leading in the tie but the ecstatic supporters knew

that one goal for the visitors would have put them out. However, as the minutes ticked towards 90, Borisov were becoming increasingly ragged and despondent.

They were finally put out of their misery when another sub, Robbie Benson, raced clear added the decisive third with an excellent finish.

The final whistle followed soon after to spark wild scenes as players, staff and supporters celebrated together in the perfect illustration of the bond that exists in this wonderful club.

Kenny wants to finish the job IN the aftermath of masterminding his greatest victory as a manager, Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny, praised all associated with the club for making such a special night possible.

Kenny was loud in his praise not only of the players, but his management team, support staff and all those who work to make the team a success, along with the magnificent supporters who once again travelled in their thousands.

Despite the celebrations and what has already been achieved, the manager was quick to point out that they will give everything they have to make the Champions League group

stages.

“It is a special night for us to get through after where we have come from. We are delighted because we know we are in the group stages of European competition with the Europa League, That is amazing for a club our size and to be in the group stages is very special.

“We shouldn’t limit ourselves to thinking ‘that’s it’ as we have a chance now and we really have to go for the Champions League.

Now that we are in fourth round we have to start thinking about the group stages. BATE are a good team who have been in the Champions League for five years,

are full of internationals and yet we played them off the park”, he stated.

Team captain, Stephen O’Donnell, also stressed the scale of Dundalk’s achievement on what was a magnificent night for all concerned.

“This is the best ever.

It was backs against the wall against a team that played Barcelona and Roma last year and to beat them 3-0 at home is unbelievable.

“This was the best night of my career and the best night for all the lads. Nobody gave us a chance. It was a great achievement but hopefully this is only the start of our adventures”, he explained as he looked forward to Friday’s

draw.

Another of the stars on the night, two-goal hero, David McMillan, believes the result illustrates just how good this Dundalk team is.

“I never thought we would win 3-0 so it is an unforgettable night. They are a fantastic team, their pedigree is unbelievable as they have done so well in the last few years, so to knock them out just shows how good this team is.

“It means so much to the fans you can just see that it is absolutely mental. They have made a huge effort to come down to Tallaght and I’m sure we will continue to have great support in the remainder of the

RehabCare actors to feature at film festival

The acting talents of the local RehabCare group will be featured at an international film festival this month.

The film which documents the making of Encore Production’s ‘Pinocchio’ which was staged in the Town Hall was produced by Blackrock native, Cara Holmes, whose brother Gavin is part of the cast.

The documentary called ‘Drama Darlings’ will be screened at the 10th International documentary festival in Kells, Co. Meath. Titled Guth Gafa which means ‘captive voice’ is the only independent documentary film festival in Ireland, which focuses on

Eighteen young -Dundalk football players ywere in Gothenburg last sweek getting a kick at international prestige.

The Gothia Cup, held neach July in Sweden atstracted this year 1,745 nu11 to u18 teams from t81 countries. The Gothia eCup is a logistical feat rievalling some of the biggest sporting events in the world.

- During the week h4,500 games were -played on 110 fields all -in and around the city of dGothenburg. There were n42,000 players playing kfootball in the tournalment and the Opening Ceremony at the Ullevi Stadium attracted a crowd of 56,000 spectators.

The players get the opportunity to play dteams from different countries and experience ddifferent styles of footdball. The tournament has switnessed the emergence of some serious football talent of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alan Shearer, Xabi Alonso, Andrea Pirlo, Sheyi tAdebayar.

English side Heath & Regents FC beat Dundalk 3-1 on Wednesday morning but the six points Dundalk earned in the first two games was

enough to qualify for the “A” section of the tournament.

Dundalk were now in the knockout stages of the A tournament and had to play again on Wednesday with just five hours to prepare and recover from the morning game.

Dundalk produced their best performance of the week to record a 3-1 win over Swedish side Tidaholms GIF who were urged on by a large home support.

minute but Tidaholms GIF equalised two minutes before half time.

Odhran Kieran rattled the Swedish post in a very tough second half as the play switched from end to end with ‘keeper Ronan Gaughran producing two magnificent saves to keep Dundalk in the game.

A penalty shoot-out looked the likely outcome but a superb strike from Conor Nicholson put Dundalk 2-1 ahead and a Daniel Mullen penalty in the last minute sealed a fantastic win for

Dundalk.

The players had little tem to reflect on their magnificent achievement up to now as they tried to recover from fatigue and injuries occurred over three days and it proved their downfall the following day as Dundalk suffered a heavy defeat with a Noon kick off in 30 degrees heat In the last 32, a tiring Dundalk lost out to eventual winners Las Vegas Sports Academy on a very hot afternoon.

The defeat and exit from the tournament took nothing away from the overall performance of the Dundalk players throughout the week with nine of the players tasting representative football for Dundalk Schoolboys League for the very first time.

“This is one of the most prestigious youth football tournaments in the world” said the team manager Brian McGuinness, “this is a once ina-lifetime experience for the boys, this is something they will remember forever”.

Woman who bit Garda has now given up drink

A woman who bit a Garda during a late night incident told Dundalk District Court that she has no intention of drinking again as a result of her behaviour.

Donna Toner of 18 Freduff Road, Cullyhanna, escaped a conviction after agreeing to make a donation of €1,000 when Judge Flann Brennan found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

The court heard that at 2.30am on Park St, Gardai were dealing with an unconscious male when a crowd gathered around. The defendant was agitated and aggressive while she began hitting people.

When they tried to calm her

down and asked her to leave she struck out and punched a Garda on the side of the head. When she was restrained on the ground by Gardai she kicked out and bit a Garda on the arm. She bit through the Garda’s jacked and broke the skin. She then kicked Gardai as she was being arrested.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that the 27-year-old had been socialising but hadn’t been out in a considerable time. She drank to excess while she has a poor recollection of the night, she accepts the facts and is deeply ashamed.

Her actions were totally out of character and she apologised to Gardai. Ms Tiernan added that

her client has abstained from alcohol since and has no intention of drinking again.

She added that the defendant feared losing her job if convicted and was in a position to make a donation. Ms Toner has endured many sleepless nights as a result and has learned her lesson.

Judge Brennan said he would accept a donation of €500 to the Court Poor Box and €500 to the Garda Benevolent Fund.

“This is an extremely serious matter and she is very wise to cease drinking if it results in this type of behaviour, particularly if she can’t remember it”, stated the judge.

Colin Torpey Inagural Golf Competition 2016

Family, friends and partner of the late Colin Torpey joined together to create an annual golf competition in his honour. Colin was a member of Dundalk Golf Club and was a very talented golfer. He was a very popular teacher who taught mathematics and IT at Ó Fiaich College for over 13 years.

Colin was 41 years old when he died tragically on April 23 this year, close to Dundalk Golf Club. The large turnout at Colin’s prayer service in the Holy Family Church, Dundalk and his funeral in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare was a testament to Colin’s popularity and deep sadness at his tragic loss.

The Colin Torpey inaugural golf competition was held in Dundalk Golf Club on Saturday July 16 followed by dinner and prize giving. Over 70 people attended the event. Close friends of Colin, Joe McEneaney and Michael McDermot organised the golf event and together with Colin’s brother Seamus Torpey and Colin’s partner Jennifer Ray, presented prizes to the winners as follows:

Woman wheeling pram is forced off the road A woman pushing a pram was forced to get off a country road to avoid a disqualified driver who was fleeing from Gardai at high speed.

As a result of the incident on May 25 last year, Gary Blessing of Annalitten, Castleblayney, was handed a 12 month suspended sentence when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

The 23-year-old was also for three years when he pleaded guilty to two endangerment charges.

The court heard that Gardai on patrol in Barrack St observed the defendant driving a car and at-

tempted to speak to him as they knew him to be disqualified.

When they activated the blue light, the defendant took off at speed, breaking two red lights and at times travelling on the wrong side of the road and almost caused an accident at the St Helena junction.

He travelled towards the Racecourse, reaching speeds of 160kph, undertook vehicles on the hard shoulder and became slightly airborne when he mounted a footpath at the Red Cow roundabout.

Young man told to avoid drugs Dundalk Leader 4th August 2016

A young man who pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of cannabis was told to avoid drugs after he escaped a conviction.

House, Court Road, Newtownbalregan, Dundalk was given the benefit of the Probation Act but was warned by Judge Flann Brennan to make sure there

wasn’t a second time.

“You can be young and foolish once but drugs are evil so avoid them completely. If you come before me again I won’t deal with

the case so leniently and that will have consequences for travel”, stated the judge.

The court was told that the defendant was stopped in a car on March 11 this

year at the Newry Road.

He had €10 worth of cannabis.

The 2016 M Donnelly Poc Fada Finals on Annaverna Mountain attracted a large crowd who were treated to a dramatic finish with the top three competitors separated by a matter of metres.

In the end it was James McInerney of Clare who took the Men’s title while Aoife Murray of Corke was the winner of the Women’s competition, with both first time winners.

The Poc Fada took place in ideal weather conditions and all competitions recorded new winners. Prior to the start the organisers remembered two men synonymous with the event – Patsy Mulholland and Peter Hoey.

Cathal Kiely (Offaly) won the Under 16 title following in the footsteps of his brother Cillian who took the title in 2011 also retaining it in 2012.

Defending Camogie Patricia Jackman (7 titles, 2009 – 2015) was unable to defend her title due to injury and Aoife Murray (Cork) took the title on 27 pocs 68m. Again a total of 49metres separated first and third places with the 2007 / 2008 winner Lyndsey Condell finishing 33m behind the winner in second place .

Special presentations were made by Pat Hartnett (Louth Armagh Committee) and Humphrey Kelleher (Croke Park) to Martin Donnelly who was sponsoring the competition for

Eleven handicapper David Murden stormed through the field to take Maurice Soraghan’s Captain’s Prize last Sunday.

He shot a best of the day 65 for a two round score of 137 and that was enough to give him a three shot win over EJ Hanratty (10) who shot 70 in both rounds for a four under par total of 140.

Club stalwart Peter Rogers (2) took the gross prize after shooting rounds of 75 and 76 for 151 while Tommy Reneghan (14) won the Veteran’s Prize after shooting a five under par 67 for 141 after a 74 last week.

Big hitting Murden started the day in 31st place after shooting a level par 72 in last week’s first round and teed off 72 minutes before the leaders having just made it

Going into the final round under the radar certainly worked for Murden as he burned up the front nine. He shot eight pars and one bogey for a one over par gross score of 37 and a nett total of 32,

However, he responded brilliantly on the par four 18th with a booming drive followed by a gap wedge and two putt for a par to finish with a superb round of 65, seven under par.

That left Murden as leader in the clubhouse and he had to spend the next hour watching the remaining 27 players try to find a way to better his score of 137. One by one they came up short and when Brian McCarthy and Jim Dwyer in the final group signed for 74s and an overall total of 141, Murden was confirmed as winner of the 2016 Captain’s Prize which represented his first individual major title.

Man had cannabis for his own use

A man who stated that over €500 worth of cannabis found in his home was for his own use, had the case against him adjourned at Dundalk District Court for a Probation Report and Community Service Report.

The court heard that on April 15 last year, Gardai searched Paul McDonagh’s home at 6 Naughton’s Close, Hoeys Lane, Dundalk.

Cannabis to the value of €511 was found which he admitted was his but was for his own use.

The court also heard that on August 27 last year he was stopped driving by Gardai.

He was holding a mobile phone and failed to produce documents. He had previous convictions for possession of drugs and road traffic offences.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client had not come to attention of Gardai for two years. While he did have a cannabis problem, he says that he doesn’t use drugs any more.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until October 5.
