Hard up council should chase €1m

Louth County Council are owed ‘the guts of €1m’ from the developers of the derelict Ard Dealgan apartments and aren’t doing nearly enough to try and recoup back the money according to a local Sinn Fein councillor.

Cllr Jennifer Green has compared efforts to try and find out more information with regards to what the council are doing to try and get in touch with developer Tom McFeely as like ‘trying to walk through a brick wall’.

The Ard Dealgan complex on Quay St, which contains 73 empty apartments, has remained unoccupied since 2009 when 30 tenants were evacuated by the council due to safety concerns.

Since then the apartments

have been taking over by squatters and drug users and have deteriorated year by year causing a major nuisance for Quay St and Barrack St residents who are afraid to let their children anywhere near the dilapidated eyesore.

With Louth County Council manager Joan Martin recently warning councillors not to ask for money for certain projects due to a lack of funding available, Cllr Green has asked why the local authority hasn’t pursued the money owed to them more vigorously.

Chamber welcomes new President Michael Gaynor At the Chamber AGM Michael Gaynor was elected President with Paddy Matthews having completed his successful two-year term.

Marist provide look into the future of new school With less than a year to go before the brand new St Mary’s College opens it’s doors for the first time, the school held an information

night in the Crowne Plaza giving parents and students a taste of what to expect.

New EU rules give more protection to holidaymakers Rules that will bring protection for package holidays up to speed with the digital age were agreed in Brussels recently. The rules will extend existing protection to cover not only traditional package holidays, but also give clear protection to 120 million consumers who book other forms of combined travel, e.g. a self-chosen combination on a website of a flight plus hotel or car rental. The agreement will cover: • pre-arranged packages - ready-made holidays from a tour operator made up of at least 2 elements: transport, accommodation or other services, e.g. car rental; • customised packages - selection of components by the traveller and bought from a single business online or offline; • linked travel arrangements - If the consumer, after having booked one travel service on one website, is invited to book another service through a targeted link or similar, the new rules offer some protection– provided that the second booking is made within 24 hours.

• In addition to existing rights being given to more consumers, travellers will also benefit from reinforced rights such as: • Clearer information: traders have to provide travellers with understandable information on the package and the protection they benefit from under package holiday rules, including on prices and potential additional charges.

• Stronger cancellation rights: free cancellation before departure in case of natural disasters, war, or other serious situations at the destination. Package travellers will also be able to cancel their holiday for any reason by paying a reasonable cancellation fee.

• Clear identification of the liable party — who has to deal with the problem if something goes wrong. This will be the organiser of the package in all EU Member States. Member States may in addition make the retailer liable.

• Guarantees of money-back and repatriation: if the package organiser goes bankrupt, these guarantees will be extended to linked travel arrangements. Facilitators of such arrangements, such as airlines, will be obliged to take out insolvency protection, guaranteeing refunds and repatriation in case they go bankrupt.

Following approval by EU Ministers in the Competitiveness Council, The European Parliament will vote in Plenary in June to endorse the agreement between the EU institutions. The Council of the European Union will then also give its formal approval of the agreed text in September or October. Following publication in the EU's Official Journal in the autumn, Member States will have two years to implement the new rules and traders a further period of 6 months to adapt to the new rules.

Evidence of job application is needed to keep licence A man was told to produce evidence of a job application in order to assist his plea to avoid a driving ban.

David Dillon of 37 Castle Heights, Castleblayney Rd, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a no insurance charge at Dundalk District Court but appealed to Judge William Hamill not to disqualify him as he was hoping to get a job as a courier.

The defendant was stopped by Gardai at the Carrick Rd on July 8 last year and he admitted not having insurance, tax or NCT. Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that the car which belonged to Mr Dillon’s brother, had been off the road but he borrowed it to try to sell it to his cousin, but was stopped on his way. The car has since been sold.

Taking into account related matters, Judge Hamill imposed a

€600 fine. Mr Breen asked that a disqualification would not be imposed as the defendant hopes to work as a courier and has been applying for jobs.

Judge Hamill adjourned the case to allow the solicitor produce evidence.

The car owner, Paul Dillon, of the same address, pleaded guilty to non display of tax and was fined €75.

“We got talking to Alex James from Blur after the Saturday Night Show and he said our song was ‘bloody brilliant’ which was a pretty nice thing to hear.

“We’re releasing the video for ‘Ms Summer Breeze’ now in a few weeks and we are on the verge of announcing plenty of festival slots throughout the summer so it’s going to be an exciting few months in store for the band”, added Hugh.

Two local women are appealing for support in their efforts to help provide a better life for the underprivileged in Romania.

Orla Sheridan and Aoife Clarke, will travel to Nicoresti, to volunteer with Conor Hughes’ Crosscause charity and are busy organising a number of fundraisers ahead of their trip on June 14.

The Dundalk cousins will spend two weeks working in Casa Brigid with 16 residents with special needs, where they will be providing various activities for the local children.

“We will be organising a summer camp in the day centre which will include activities such as arts, craft and games. We will also take them to a local forest for a sports day and barbecue while their families will also attending”, explained Orla.

to the centre on two occasions each before but this is the first time they will travel together. They are also hoping that the funds they raise will go towards the upkeep of the facilities.

In an area where there is little running water and electricity, the centre provides essential facilities and meals, along with many other services such as a park which requires maintenance.

“It is very rewarding to give time to this charity and it is great to see them learning and enjoy-

ing themselves. It can be very difficult to leave as you get very attached to the children, explained Aoife.

For those wishing to help out, there is a cake sale in the Louth Hospital on Thursday June 11.

A table quiz was held in McGeoughs Bar on Friday night, while Orla and Aoife are grateful to St Francis NS in Blackrock for organising a non-uniform day and raising valuable funds.

Tore the shirt off Garda in cell A man who ripped the shirt off a Garda after being arrested avoided a jail term after he told Dundalk District Court he is making efforts to turn his life around.

Darren McElligott of 27 Barrack St, Dundalk, was given a two-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a number of charges.

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that on September 30, 2013, Gardai were called to a disturbance in Ashbrook where they found the

defendant in a highly intoxicated state. He pushed a Garda and had to be restrained after his arrest, while he continued to be abusive and violent.

Mr McElligott, who had 57 previous convctions, was extremely violent in a cell at Dundalk Garda Station where he ripped the shirt off a Garda.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client was wellknown to the court and had first been in prison as a 14-year-old.

He developed a drug problem in his 20s but he had undertaken a treatment programme which changed him.

“He has done well and is off drugs. He has changed a lot and is in a relationship, so he is looking forward to the future”, explained Mr McDonnell as he asked for his client to be dealt with leniently as possible.

Judge Brennan imposed a twomonth sentence which he suspended for two months.

Transition Year triathlon THE fourth annual Louth Transition Year Triathlon took place in May in glorious sunshine in St. Mary’s, Drumcar.

The event, which was organised by Louth Local Sports Partnership, the Louth PE Teachers Network, An Garda Síochána and Setanta Triathlon Club saw 182 students representing 8 schools from throughout the County compete in both team and individual events.

Louth Sports Partnership would like to thank St. Marys, Drumcar for the use of their pool

and premises. Competitors were required to complete a 200m swim, a 9k Cycle and a 3k Run. Schools involved were: St. Marys, Dundalk; Our Ladys College, Greenhills Drogheda; St. Louis, Dundalk; Scoil Ui Mhuiri, Dunleer; Bush Post Primary; Drogheda Grammar School; Dundalk Grammar School; Colaiste Rís, Dundalk.

Prizes were awarded as follows: Individual Male Winners: 1st – Oisin O’Gibne, Drogheda Grammar, 2nd – Eoin McDaid – Bush, 3rd – Gary Carroll, Dun-

dalk Grammar.

Beach clean-up at Gyles Quay cllr Jim Loughran was getting his hands dirty last Saturday at the annual Gyles Quay Beach clean up which is organised by the local Sinn Féin Cumann.

Councillor Loughran said “despite the windy conditions quite a large crowd turned out to help and we worked our way from the pier the whole way over to the River Foot. We managed to col-

lect around 30 bags of rubbish as well as other larger debris. With the recent bad weather and rough tides, there were a lot of plastic bottles among other rubbish that was washed up onto the beach”.

The clean up at Gyles Quay Beach is organised by the Campbell Donnelly Sinn Féin Cumann based in the area and it has become an annual event which also

includes a clean up along the Long Woman’s Grave.

The councillor organised gloves and rubbish packers for all those on the day and said “I want to thank all those who took part on Saturday and also the Council who collected all the bags at the end of the day. This was a community effort and sure we had a bit of craic along the way.”

Boy racer stupidly put career at risk A ‘boy racer’ was told that he behaved very stupidly by putting his career at risk with the manner of his driving.

Judge Flann Brennan gave the warning to Cillian Duffy of Forkhill House, Balregan, Dundalk, after the mechanic pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving.

District Court that as a result of ongoing problems with boy racers, Gardai attended Ballymascanlon roundabout on Thursday February 19 this year.

The defendant was witnessed ‘drifting’ around the roundabout and charged with dangerous driving.

The defence solicitor stated that his 20-year-old client was in court with his family who were extremely irritated

and annoyed by the behaviour and that he had been disciplined as a result.

He added that as a mechanic, Mr Duffy depended on his licence for his livelihood. He was in the company of his peers when he took part in this activity and should have known better.

“This is the height of stupidity. I’m sure you are not stupid but on this occasion you did behave very stupidly”, he stated as he reminded the defendant that his licence was very important to him.

Judge Brennan accepted a plea to careless driving and imposed a €200 fine.

St Peter’s NS celebrate national success St Peter’s National School, Dromiskin, was awarded the title of Ireland’s Walking School of the Year (Primary) at a ceremony in Dublin.

An Taisce Green-Schools presented the school with their award at the event honouring the winners of this year’s Green-Schools BIG Travel Challenge 2015 in the Radisson Hotel, Golden Lane. Seven other schools were also awarded on the day for their efforts promoting sustainable and active travel modes to school.

St Peter’s NS answered the challenge with determination, choosing to concentrate on walking to school. Before the challenge the school had 40 students regularly walking to school. On the final day of the challenge they recorded 199 (out of a possible 223) walking to school – a considerable increase.

The school has been actively working on the Green-Schools programme for 16 years and are currently working on the Global Citizenship – Energy theme.

Amy Broadhurst wins historic 12th national title

Dealgan boxer Amy Broadhurst bounced back from disappointment at the recent World Boxing Championships in Taiwan to pick up a record 12th National Boxing Title at the National Stadium.

Eighteen-year-old Amy was controversially beaten in Taiwan on the judges score-

cards when most in attendance felt she had won the bout. However rather than wallowing in self pity Amy and her father and coach Tony decided the best way to recover from the disappointment was to get back on the horse and try and claim a 12th national title.

No underage female boxer had previously managed to claim 12

national titles but that all changed on Saturday evening when Amy won the U18 60kg division when her opponent Renee Roche pulled out of the final.

Amy had won her semi-final in scintillating fashion on Friday evening knocking out her opponent Maria Cronin from Rathkeale in less than a minute.

she has now qualified for the European Championships which will be held in Hungary his August. According to Tony the ‘Dundalk Dynamo’ will now have a break before returning to the gym next month to prepare for the Europeans.

“I was out with local residents picketing outside the complex last Friday and I was told by each and every one of them that this development has become a nightmare for them as it is attracting anti-social elements from all ove”, warned Jennifer.

has been stripped and wrecked and residents are afraid to let their children out because it is just dangerous. As a mother of two boys, I know how curious they can be and how adventurous but the complex is not secured in any way to keep anyone out despite Dundalk Town Council putting money into it a few years ago to do just that. I really dread to think what could happen.”

“The Ard Dealgan development was built by Tom McFeely, the same man, who left the tax-

payer with a €27m repair bill for Priory Hall and 200 million in liabilities with NAMA. “He has also left a legacy on Quay St which also requires intervention from the State and I have been urging Louth County Council to buy the site and develop it for social housing.

We have a housing crisis in the town and we can turn this disaster building into a solution for families who have been waiting years for a home. We hope we get the support of all councillors on Louth County Council to achieve this goal”, Cllr Dearey concluded.

Louth County Council’s Acting Director of Services Mary T Daly confirmed that the council have been unable to get a response or secure an address for Mr. Thomas McFeely.

“Ard Dealgan was listed on the Council’s Derelict Sites Register on 24th November, 2014. Notices were served on the following:- The Owner, Ard Dealgan, Mr. Thomas McFeely, Ard Dealgan, Dundalk, Bankruptcy Official Assignee of Mr. Thomas McFeely, Bankruptcy Official Assignees Office, Phoenix Street, Dublin 7.

“The Council were informed by the Bankruptcy Official Assignees that the mortgage was sold by IRBC to Beltany Property Finance Limited. The

Council have been in contact with Pepper Assets who have been engaged to service the loan and mortgage the debt. A receiver is due to be appointed.

The Council have today written to Beltany Properties requiring that the derelict condition of the site be addressed.” explained Mary.

With regards to the claims that almost €1m was owed to Louth County Council the acting director of services noted that “No levy has been determined due to the difficulties with getting an accurate market valuation on the site in its current condition. With regards to planning levies- Permission was granted to Coalport Building Company Limited and total levies at grant of permission was €654,787.

“The Council welcomes any development proposals for the site, and do consider the site a suitable site for housing development, however the site is not in the ownership of the Council and the Council therefore have no plans for this site. This is a matter for the receivers when appointed. The Council will continue to pursue the matter of the derelict condition of the site in accordance with the Derelict Sites Act 1990.” concluded the Louth County Council official.

LOUTH will be represented in Tralee at this year’s Rose festival following Jenny Hanlon’s victory in Portlaoise last weekend. The 19-yearold Cooley native was one of just seven Irish Roses picked following the gruelling regional finals where 56 roses were interviewed by Daithi O Sé over three nights There must be something in the water in Cooley given that Jenny will be the first Louth Rose to make it to the Dome in Tralee since her neighbour Patricia Marmion represented the Wee County back in 2012. According to Jenny she was in a state of shock when her name was called out by Daithi on Sunday evening.

“I had an absolutely fabulous weekend in Portlaoise and to be picked to go on to the next stage in Tralee just put the icing on everything. I was the very first name called out

and to be honest my legs just went numb and I couldn’t stand up”, explained Jenny.

“I went down on Thursday evening and had a great gang of supporters to cheer me on including my Mam and Dad. There were 56 roses interviewed on stage over three nights and I was on Friday which was great as it meant I could relax and enjoy the rest of the weekend. I sang ‘Travelin Soldier’ and thankfully it seemed to go down ok with the audience.

“I’ve been told that I won’t know what will hit me over the next couple of months and I hope that’s a good thing”, laughed Jenny.

“It’s going to be hectic but I’m really looking forward to experi-

encing the whole thing.

I’d like to thank all my family and friends for their brilliant support and to all the Roses I met and made friends with in Portlaoise”, added Jenny.

All roads lead to Tralee for Jenny and her loyal band of supporters with the festival taking place between August 14 and 18.

There she will be joined by 31 other Roses from all over the globe as they bid to succeed last year’s winner Maria Walsh.

This is the final year that entrants will have to participate in the regional heats, as organisers recently announced their plans to expand the competition across three nights to accommodate 70 roses next year.

A local teacher is putting her talents to good use over the summer when she travels to Africa to help children in a local community affected by HIV and Aids.

Niamh Sweeney, from dKnockbridge, will spend five weeks of her summer holidays in Uganda tas part of a group of 30 volunteers with Nurture Africa.

Although she knows -it is going to be a challenge, Niamh is confindent that it will be an equally rewarding trip yand she is looking forward to heading off. a “I became aware of the project which is aimed at helping children in a community affected by HIV and Aids, and as a teacher I nwanted to use my skills to help. r “As well as being a teacher, I also have a background in music and GAA and I thought it would be good to give -

“On Saturday June 6 I have an 80s and 90s night in Cluskeys of Little Ash, which promises to be a great night. We will have a novelty inflatable pub at the back along with pig on a spit and a DJ. “Hopefully people will come out and support the night”, continued Niamh.

Woman stole food to feed children A woman who needed food for her children pleaded guilty to a number of theft charges when she appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Mary McDonagh with an address at 97 Riverside Drive, Red Barns Road, Dundalk, also admitted taking items from chemists valued at over €970.

The court heard that on September 2 last year she entered Topaz on the Dublin Road and left with groceries valued at €9.91. Three days later she stole items valued at €21.99 and on October 7, left with items worth €13.99 from the same shop. The goods were not recovered.

On May 11 this year she entered Boots in the Marshes and removed items valued at €852, which was later recovered, and on the same day took moisteuriser from Leavys chemist worth €120.

On Wednesday April 1 this year the defendant stole clothes worth €59.59 from Dunnes, Muirhevnamor, which were not recovered.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that the defendant, who had 36 previous convictions, was well known to the court.

The 40-year-old is a mother to three children.

“In relation to Topaz, she was taking food for her children as she was struggling to feed them. It is not an excuse but she acted out of necessity”, explained Ms Sands, who stated that her client was willing to pay compensation. She added that Ms McDonagh was willing to do Community Service.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to June 24 for a Community Service report and recommended 120 hours in lieu of six months, pointing out that this was due to her record.

letters to the editor Alison is a great support Dear Editor, I enjoyed your story about my dear friend with cystic fibrosis Alison Kenny, whom I have known over 19 years, I also have cystic fibrosis and diabetes, because of cross infection myself and Alison have never “seen” each other since 1991.

This is very sad, as Alison is a very brave lady indeed, and suffers a lot, she has a great

daughter and a lot of support with her wonderful husband.

I have just turned 50, two days after Alison (26 April this year), also a pensioner with cystic fibrosis, I have also been a diabetic on insulin three times a day for the past 29 years, also very low lung functions.

I have recently split up with my partner of eight years. I am totally alone now, coping with two very serious illnesses, with just an elderly father who comes to visit to take my two dogs for a walk, apart from this, I very rarely see people.

Alison has been a great great support to me in this very sad and hard time, ringing me up

nearly every day even though she is not well herself. I love her dearly, she is a wee fighter, as a lot of people with severe cystic fibrosis are.

I live in Belfast, unfortunately because of low lung functions and cystic fibrosis and diabetes, I was never able to have my longed for child.

People should be aware of what people with cf and cfrd (cystic fibrosis related diabetes) go through, and sometimes like myself totally alone, with hardly any support.

Alison is such a fighter and never lets anything get her down, she always has a smile on her face, she is very lucky

to have her lovely daughter and very caring husband, only wish I had the same, but Alison, never lets me feel lonely she is always on the end of the phone cheering me up, no matter how she feels herself.

This disease is not easy, and is very anti social as people with CF are not allowed to see each other or even be in the same room as each other, even friends they have known a lifetime because of cross infection.

This horrid disease needs a cure now.

Post Polio Support Group says thanks Gardening centre The Post Polio Support was recently presented with a cheque from the Tesco community fund and they are grateful to the customers of Tesco who supported this.

The support group would also like to thank the volunteers who helped in the Mid Louth area with the recent church gate collection and the people who gave generously Their are 7,000 polio survivors in Ireland all affects in different way by post polio syndrome. The post polio support group was set up 22 years ago to support and provide services to these people. It is a voluntary run organisation throughout Ireland with a charity status. All funds raised go to the group to provide practical supports and services to polio survivors who are having difficulty in every day tasks. To do this they rely on the public/corporate donations.

Dundalk Garden Centre have announced their ‘Gardening Day Out’, an event celebrating 40 years in business, taking place in the centre on Saturday June 6. While celebrating this occasion the event will also mark the launch of the centre’s new logo and branding and will feature a variety of guest speakers and demonstrations from the local community and further afield.

Flying over from London, John Sarbutt is scheduled to headline with a demonstration on hanging basket design and a look at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

From a bit closer to home, local expert Pamela Whitaker will be doing a workshop on ‘The Family Herb Garden’, while bee keeper Eoghan Mac Giolla Coda will be discussing local honey and bee friendly gardening and Rose expert John MacNamara will be

traveling from Cork to do a demonstration on rose gardening and grafting.

The Dundalk Garden Centre has been operating in Dundalk for just over 40 years now. Set up by Robert Cox and run now by his daughters Nicola McCooey and Jacquie Short this local institution has provided the community with quality trees, plants and flowers, not to mention a wealth of local expertise that could only be acquired over generations of working in horticulture.

Steven Short, Jacquie’s son and spokesperson for the centre said “We just wanted to host an event that would give a little back to the community and town that has supported us for so many years. Between our sale and our free demonstrations and workshops, we hope that there will be something here for the gardener in everyone”.

Car Boot Sale

SOSAD (Save Our Sons and Daughters) will hold a car boot sale in McEvoy’s Car Park, Batchelors Walk, Dundalk. The sale will take place on Sunday June 7 between 11am and 3.30pm. Cost of admission is €2 for adults and free in for children.

Preparations underway for Blackrock Raft Race Blackrock Tidy Towns are finalising their preparations for this year’s Raft Race & Family Fun Day which takes place on Sunday June 21, and the official launch of the event took place in The Clermont on Tuesday last.

A full programme of events has been published including the ever-popular sandcastle competition, a recital at the

Sundial by Dundalk Brass Band, Junior Poc Fada, a schools talent competition, and of course the Raft Race itself.

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter will also make an appearance unless it is called to deal with an emergency, and Dundalk Cricket Club will again entertain with their “Cricket on the Beach”.

Kate Smyth will once again be commentator for the raft race which is sponsored as always by Brendan Watters Insurances.

The Winsdor Bar sponsors the Brass Band recital, and Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock sponsor the sandcastle competition.

The schools talent competition is produced and staged

by Patricia Reynolds of the Reynolds Academy of Performing Arts, and the Junior Poc Fada is organised in association with the Blackrock Hurling and Camogie Club.

Thus far 32 rafts had registered to take part, representing businesses and organisations from the village and further afield. The 2014 winners, Smyths Life Pharmacy

from Seatown, are expecting some tough opposition this year especially from St Fursey’s School who came a close second last year.

There will be three heats with three from each heat contesting the final.

In conjunction with the raft race the Tidy Towns are running a bumper raffle, with lines on sale in various

outlets around the village as well as on the day.

The prizes include a 32” Smart TV courtesy of Lally’s Electrical, a Night at the Races sponsored by Dundalk Stadium, and other prizes sponsored by McQuillan’s Pharmacy, Louth County Council, The Crowne Plaza, The Hair Shop and Cooley Distillery.

Arch Club enjoy trip to the zoo The Lions Club and the Arch Club teamed up for a wonderful day at the zoo last Saturday morning.

Ideal Living Expo shows all that is good in Dundalk Business in the North East got a boost over the weekend at Ideal Living 15 held in Dundalk Youth Development Centre.

Organised by local businessman, Jimmy Cumiskey, the event attracted individuals and families alike, with plenty for everyone to enjoy.

“Thanks to those in the business community who supported this exhibition of the best on offer here in the North East, and thanks to the many visitors we had to the event”, said Jimmy.

“We expected more to come along, but with the dreadful weather, that was understandable. The wonderful displays really highlighted what we have on offer here locally, and will encourage people to shop local and keep jobs and business here in Dundalk”, he added.

The three day event attracted hundreds who came along, viewed and purchased some of the many products and services on offer.

There were fantastic water features for gardens, clothes making and alterations, home interiors, allergy testing, mirror etching, driving lessons, blinds and shutters, water filters, and a wide variety of products.

Chamber of commerce president, Michael Gaynor, did the honours on Saturday, officially declaring the expo open with the launch of hundreds of black and white balloons at the Oriel Park venue.

A puppy party, dog show and blessing of animals attracted dozens of dogs to the venue.

Documentary to be screened in New Zealand Dundalk filmmaker Peter McKeown continues to enjoy success around the world with his documentary ‘Tonn Nua’ with New Zealand the latest country to screen the film.

Earlier this year the documentary was selected for screening at this year’s Chicago Irish Film Festival where it received glowing reviews.

Next week will see the documentary screened at the Maoiri Film Festival in New Zealand this weekend.

Recent DkIT graduate Peter worked in tandem with Navan man Niall Cleary for the project which examines contemporary Irish cinema and takes a look at the latest growth in micro budget film-making occurring in Ireland. The film charts the growth of these micro budget films in Ireland over the last number of years and speaks to a number of filmmakers associated with this cinematic movement.

Peter who hails from Castle Road in Dundalk shot the documentary last year to show the ever changing face of Irish cinema and highlight some of the new wave of Irish directors currently making their mark in the film industry. The documentary was well received winning a couple of awards at the Underground Film Festival in Dublin. It was on the back

of these awards that Peter decided to send the film off to be considered for the Chicago Film Festival.

“Myself and Niall were delighted with the reaction to the documentary and after we got a couple of awards at the Underground Film Festival in Dublin we decided to send it off to Chicago for consideration. And pretty quickly we got word back to say that our documentary was going to be screened which was very exciting news for us.

“We’ve been delighted with the reaction so far from all over the planet ”, enthused Peter.

“We first worked together on a short film called Son Rise as part of our Video and Film production course in DKIT and we enjoyed it so much we teamed up again to make ‘Tonn Nua’”, revealed Peter.

Peter was also involved in the highly acclaimed ‘One Million Dubliners’ documentary which aired late last year on RTE 1 telling the story of Glasnevin cemetery and its guide and historian Shane Mac Thomáis.

The Wairoa Maori Film Festival is New Zealand’s premiere Maori and indigenous film festival. The Wairoa Māori Film Festival is held at the local historic Taihoa Marae and is now in it’s tenth year.

Teenage players at Dundalk Tennis Club

BANANZA of Teen Tennis at local club Another ‘BANANZA’ of tennis was served up at Dundalk Tennis Club this week as lots of teenagers played at the local club. Coach John McGahon stated that tennis has become an integral part of local schools PE programmes in Dundalk. The club has worked with neighbouring school Colaiste Chu Chulainn who participated in

the schools teenage programme that aims to give more and more students and children the opportunity to play tennis throughout Louth.

Meanwhile, the refurbishment of the tennis club is underway and this week saw the completion of the fencing stage of the building works. The lower fencing is demonstrative of the

move to open up the facilities to make the club a more welcome environment for players, as well as encouraging children, students and adults to come in and give tennis a big hit.

It is hoped that all the works will be completed in time for the Fyffes Junior Louth Open 2015 from Saturday June 27 to Saturday July 4. This will be

followed by the Senior Louth Open from July 19 to 26 and the Junior event from August 1 to 7.

Dundalk Tennis Club’s winning form continued last weekend with Freddy Murray winning the Boys U12 Junior Open Championship at Mullingar.

Freddy is from Belfast but is a member at the club.

Square Utd celebrate 40 years of football Square Utd are preparing for a busy 20152016 season which will mark the club’s 40th Anniversary.

The club has served the Ardee community ever since they first started

out in 1976 providing football to countless local juvenile and senior teams over the years. The club has now become one of the longest running clubs in the Mid-Louth area

with a well established football tradition.

To coincide with Square Utd’s 40th Anniversary season, the club are relaunching their juvenile section at tonight’s (Thurs-

Graduation at DkIT

There was great cause for celebration at the annual Dundalk Incredible Years Parent Graduation which took place in Dundalk Institute of Technology on Friday May 29. The Genesis Programme is now the co-ordinating body for the Incredible Years suite of programmes in Dundalk and Drogheda. The Genesis Programme is working to improve well being and developmental outcomes for children aged prebirth to six years.

The Incredible Years is a set of three interlocking, comprehensive, and developmentally based programmes targeting parents, teachers and children. The programmes are designed to work

Man apologises for driving at 174kph A member of the defence forces apologised at Dundalk District Court for driving his motorbike at 174kph on the motorway, asked that he be dealt with leniently to ensure his career prospects were not affected.

Cricket club make good start Dundalk Cricket Club’s first team is back in the form that saw it win Leinster divisional titles in 2011 and 2012.

After the opening fixture of the season against Swords was washed out, the team arrived at Leinster Cricket Club in Rathmines recently with renewed hope, after several new players joined the club over the winter.

A quick look at the pitch encouraged capitain/coach Michael Waterman to bat first when he won the toss and after a succession of disappointing batting efforts in 2014, the game against Leinster saw a much-improved performance.

A steady start saw Dundalk’s opening pair Andrew Pike and Michael Hughes put on well over 50 for the first wicket, before both fell after scoring 27.

Sajan Jayaseelan and Phil Osborn continued the good work as the team reached 171 for 7 from 40 overs.

return of Conan Martin after a couple of years out with a knee injury.

Banned after third drink drive offence

A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was banned for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Silvinas Blankys of River Lane, Dundalk, who had two previous drink driving convictions, was also fined €350 as a result of the incident at Avenue Road on November 1 last year.

On that date Gardai were called to a road traffic accident which the defendant accepted responsibility for. He was arrested and a breath sample showed he was over the limit.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the separated father of two has been in the country for 11 years. He is in full-time employment in Cork and comes back to Dundalk at the weekend. The damage from the accident had been paid for.

Woman accepted responsibility for accident

A woman who initially pleaded not guilty to a careless driving offence, admitted in evidence that she was responsible for an accident on the M1 Motorway.

Jean Rylands of The Hamptons, Dublin Road, Malahide, told the court that “for some unknown reason”, her car veered to the left”, causing her to collide with another car.

As the defendant was unable able to produce an engineer’s report to indicate a problem with the car, Judge William Hamill ruled that he had no evidence that it wasn’t careless driving and imposed a €200 fine.

A witness gave evidence that he was driving on the northbound carriage of the M1 with his wife and children when he noticed a car in his mirror on the fast lane. The car then collided with him and he ended up off the road.

Garda Donna Boid, who attended the scene, stated that the car driven by the witness was badly damaged along the driver’s side.

Ms Rylands admitted that her car veered to the left but was unable to give a reason for it. She stated that she didn’t lose concentration and felt she wasn’t driving carelessly.

the skoda superb estate The renault kadjar

The all new Skoda Superb Estate has been launched and should be available in the New Year.

It follows on from the release of the hatchback with the added benefit of nearly 2,000 litres of cargo holding potential which is best in class.

Worldwide the Superb Estate has reached over 200,000 sales since 2009 which is around 35 per cent of total Superb inventory.

The new model is based on the MQB platform shared

amongst the Volkswagen group of companies, and used on the likes of the new Leon, Golf and Octavia.

The wheelbase of the new model has increased by 80mm to 2,841mm with the track increased to 1,584mm front and 1,572mm rear which equates to more interior space for all. The headroom for all occupants is increased, rear knee room extended along with elbow room.

Over the predecessor there is a 27 litre increase in boot

space at 660 litres with the rear seats in place, fold them down and this increases to 1,950 litres.

All engines are now EU6 complaint and there are efficiency dividends of up to 30 per cent over the outgoing model.

On the tech front there is the latest gadgetry including smartphone connectivity entitled SmartLink including MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology there is even the option of creating WI-FI hot spot.

Following on from the compact Captur, Renault is introducing a larger Qashqai competing crossover entitled the

Kadjar.

The Renault Kadjar will go on sale later in the year after it made it's debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Not surprisingly it based on the same platform as the Nissan Qashqai as a result of the Renault- Nissan alliance; it even has a similar 4.45 metre long x 1.84 metre footprint.

It will be available with the choice of either two or four wheel drive; we assume it will have the same engine lineup as the Qashqai, with Renault not making any official comments. So we should expect a 1.2-litre petrol and two diesel variants, 1.5 and 1.6-litres.

The four wheel drive model with feature a three mode transmission with the ability to select (Auto, LOCK and 2WD) to aid traction.

There is a 190 mm of ground clearance with an approach angle of 18 degrees / 25 degree departure.

The underside is protected by front and rear skid plates, although whether many will venture

off road has yet to be seen.

The Renault Kadjar promises to be family friendly with soft yet hard wearing surfaces and materials – and has a two boot configuration layout – offing a completely flat boot surface at the height of the boot aperture or ‘low’ position to provide a maximum carrying capacity of 472 litres, some 40 litres up on the Qashqai. The rear seats fold on a 60/40 basis via handles located in the boot.

The Kadjar will feature the latest in tech with the availability of fullLED twin headlights, a seven-inch touch screen interface with a myriad of apps to help you interact with the car and the outside world.

Safety equipment will include emergency brake assist, lane departure warning, road-sign recognition with speed limit alerts and a reversing camera.

the new Ferrari 458

The Ferrari 458 is to be replaced with a new turbocharged V8 488 GTB model.

The emissions police have decreed that all car manufactures must make a concerted effort to reduce CO2 emissions which means the 458 replacement is to feature a new 3902 cc V8 bi-turbo engine outputting 670 PS at 6,000 rpm / 760Nm of torque from 3,000 rpm. CO2 emissions have lowered to 260 g/km with fuel

consumption of around 24.8 mpg.

The acceleration benchmark 0-62 mph takes 3.0 seconds, with 124 mph taking just 8.3 seconds and a top speed in excess of 205 mph. This all equates to lap around Ferrari’s Fiorano testing ground some 2 seconds quicker than the 458 Italia at 1:23 seconds.

The 3.9-litre engine is supported with seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with Variable Torque Management

which delivers power evenly throughout the rev range, whatever gear it is in. There is a new revision of the side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 - SSC2) which is less invasive ensuring better longitudinal acceleration out of bends. The system works in injunction with 488 GTB’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, and can control the active dampers keep the car flat even under the most demanding of manoeuvres.

The revised BMW 3-Series range for 2015 has been revealed with a number of tweaks and modifications to the range – in both saloon and touring (estate) formats. There is a new three cylinder petrol engine, and a hybrid joining the range.

The new BMW 3-Series will be going on sale in July 2015 with full specifications and prices to be confirmed and we will of course publish these as

soon as we have them.

The 3-Series has been with us for forty years been introduced in 1975 and since then has gone on to sell 14 million models worldwide. It now features ever tougher competition with the introduction of the Jaguar XE and the forthcoming Audi A4, not to mention the Mercedes C-Class.
