Susan Dunne from Woodbury Gardens, just off Tom Bellew Avenue stated that there have been issues with her water pressure since the start of the year and that she has got nowhere with representatives from Uisce Eirean despite numerous calls to the company. “I have spent a fortune trying to resolve this issue and I actually had to get a loan from the Credit Union to pay for plumbers, electricians, new showers in an attempt to fix the problem. I was told by Irish Water at the start of the year when I first logged this issue that there were no issues logged and that it may be a problem with my shower. “I replaced the shower two times and then decided to get all the electrics checked to make sure everything was wired properly. I am paying a mortgage and living with my two kids and it has caused so much stress. You get a bit of pressure before 7am or after 11pm but in between the water coming from the shower is cold and there is no pressure.

Water pressure problems causing local residents financial and stressful woes

From Page 1

“My plumber couldn’t understand what was going on and after the second new shower didn’t resolve the issue he advised me that it must be a problem with the pressure and told me to get back on to Irish Water. I then got talking to neighbours and found out that they were having similar issues so we knew then that the problem was with Irish Water. I thought I was going off my head and it was so frustarting not being able to get to the bottom of the problem but at least we know now and we want Irish Water to take responsibility and sort out this issue as soon as possible,” stated Susan.

Down the road in Ashbrook, Yohan Riou and his wife Janice have been without the use of a properly working shower since January and according to Yohan the issue is getting worse rather than better.

“We first noticed the problem at the start of the year when we couldn’t get warm water from the shower and we were having issues with the washing machine. A plumber looked at it and couldn’t resolve it so we called Uisce Eireann to log the problem but they were not interested in anything

except the kitchen sink tap. We kept at them and then finally we got a guy come out to us from Uisce Eireann to check the pressure but he told us it was fine. I knew it wasn’t just an issue in our house as we live in a row with six bungalows and all my neihbours were experiencing similar issues. It was at that stage we decided to get a local representative involved and thanks to Ruairí Ó Murchú things seem to be moving in the right direction now,” explained Yohan.

“We were lucky enough given the fact we bought a new shower but were able to get a refund but I know of lots of neighbours who weren’t able to and are out of pocket thanks to this mess. This is a basic

necessity and we just want the pressure to be at the right level so we can have a shower and use washing appliances,” he added.

Sinn Fein TD Ruairí Ó Murchú agreed that water pressure problems are causing ‘huge issues’ for residents who live along Tom Bellew Avenue and noted that residents ‘need to have confidence that Uisce Eireann are taking it seriously’.

The local TD said he had been contacted by a number of residents who live in estates adjoining Tom Bellew Avenue who have, since the beginning of March, experienced ‘severely low’ water pressure.

The issue, Deputy Ó Murchú said, has caused some of them to believe

there was a problem with their showers and have led to the appliances being replaced only for the new ones not to work either.

The Dundalk deputy said one resident had told him: ‘I have bought two new showers in the last few weeks thinking the shower was my issue but it’s not.

‘The first shower was Triton t80 1.5 bar and it wouldn’t heat so the plumber said to take it back and get replaced, I then found others were having same issue so it wasn’t the shower. So I bought the T80 1 bar. ‘I know plenty in the estate who have done same and still same issue. We are a family of three adults and one teen and for any of us to shower we have to get

up at 5.30 am’. Deputy Ó Murchú said he had raised the issue a number of times over the last month with Uisce Eireann and received a response before the Easter break, detailing how the water company is aware of the problem and will look at fixing it in ‘Q2 2024’.

Uisce Eireann told Deputy Ó Murchú: ‘The area in question is pressure controlled, to around 1.5Bar. However, demand fluctuates (200m3/hr to 292m3/ hr) causes pressure to drop to around 1.1Bar at various times in the week.

‘We are currently in the process of replacing the pressure reducing valve to a unit that can react in real time to the changing demand pro-

file. Work to be completed by end of Q2 2024’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘This issue has caused a lot of problems for residents who live along Tom Bellew Avenue, hundreds of houses. There was no warning, no information given out by Uisce Eireann before people started going to the expense of changing their showers and that is not acceptable.

‘While I accept the response from them before Easter, I have again asked for a meeting with them to ensure that any work that needs to be carried out is done as quickly as possible and to speak to them about the other water problems in Dundalk’.

Avenue Inn head shave raises almost €6k for Birches

A GROUP of friends from the Avenue Road have raised almost €6000 for the Birches Alzheimer Day Care Centre following a charity Head Shave in the Avenue Inn last weekend.

Niall O’Hanrahan, Ciaran Bond, Ciaran McShane, Paul Lee, Alan Lee, Nigel Clarke, Carl Thomas, Anto Hughes and Brendan Cahill took part in the Maginificent Seven fundraiser which initially had seven brave souls sign up to get their heads and beard shaves but turned into the Magnificent Nine on the night when two more friends offered to take a seat in the barbers chair for the event.

Niall O’Hanrahan from Afton Drive in Greenacres explained how the group of friends decided to organise the head shave after hearing about the Birches urgent need for comfortable furniture for everyone who attends the centre on the Dublin Road.

“One of the guy’s, Paul Lee, has a brother called David who is a volunteer driver for the Birches. He was telling Paul how the furniture in the Birches was getting old and how they were in need of more comfortable chairs and sofas for the people who visit the centre.

Myself and a group of friends meet up for a pint in the Avenue Inn on a Saturday night and we decided to try and organise a fundraiser to help out what is a really fantastic facility for those in our town who are affected by Alzheimers.

Myself and three of the guys had previously raised money for charity about six years ago with a head shave so we all pledged to grow our hair and beards during lent before getting it cut in the Avenue Inn on Saturday night. We had a fantastic night full of fun and laughter and most importantly we managed to raise a total of €5885. We are still accepting donations and we are hoping we might get over the €6000 mark before handing over the cheque to the Birches. We want to thank local barber Luke Johnstone who shaved our heads and beards as well as the DJ on the night and everybody who came to support us and gave money on the night.

“We halso have to thank Pat Brady as well as Declan and Joanne in the Avenue Inn for hosting the event,” concluded Niall. If you would like to help Niall and friends you can donate at www.idonate. ie/fundraiser/themagnificentseven

McGreehan welcomes additional measures to protect children from tobacco and e-cigarettes

McGreehan has welcomed the commencement of further sections of the Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Act 2023 to strengthen the protection of children from tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products such as e-cigarettes or vapes.

Provisions commenced will:

Ban the sale of tobacco products or nicotine inhaling products at events aimed at children;

Prohibit advertising for nicotine inhaling products around cinema films for children, on public service vehicles and at stops or stations and within 200 metres of a school.

These changes will start from September 23, 2024, after a sixmonth lead in time.

Test purchasing on tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products are now underpinned by law. This coincides with the 20th anniversary of Ireland’s

smoking ban in workplaces.

Senator McGreehan said, “Twenty years ago today Tánaiste Micheál Martin introduced a ban on smoking in indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and other work places, making Ireland the

first country in the world to do so.

“Today, I want to acknowledge the efforts of my party colleague, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, in continuing to introduce evidence-based policy measures that help to reduce the significant health burden that smoking places on our population, a key achievement for Fianna Fáil in Government.

“Second-hand smoke causes cancers, heart disease and strokes, and young people who vape are more likely to go on to smoke. We are acting to make these products less accessible to our young people and to remove the advertising for these products from our children’s everyday lives.’’

Senator McGreehan concluded by saying that she looks forward to the implementation of further measures on nicotine inhaling products that are currently being developed.

Dundalk Library celebrates 30 years in Roden Place

with a panel talk

LOUTH County Council is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dundalk Library at Roden Place.

Dundalk Library was the first local authority public library in Ireland, opening in 1858. The library subsequently expanded and moved to the former Grammer School in Chapel Street. In 1934 the Louth County Library service was established (under the Local Government Act of 1925) and the Dundalk Free Library became the centre of the county wide service.

In March 1994, after more than 90 years in Chapel Street, the County Library headquarters moved into the newly renovated Distillery Buildings in Roden Place.

To mark the milestone in Roden Place, Dundalk Library are delighted to host a panel discussion in the library at 6pm on Thursday 11th April.

Over the past 30 years Irish society has seen many changes in terms of population growth and advancements in technology, leading to a more vibrant and culturally diverse society. Louth Library Service has embraced these changes with Dundalk Library expanding and adapting the wonderful building in Roden Place to suit the growing needs of the community.

Dundalk Library offers a varied, relevant physical stock, Local Studies resources, a suite of e-Services including e-books, eaudio books, language learning opportunities and much more. Louth Library Service continues to upgrade the technology on offer with new PC’s and printing devices installed, an enhanced WiFi solution, interactive whiteboards, I-Macs and gaming equipment. The introduction of a sensory space and equipment has enhanced Dundalk Library as a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

Dundalk Library will continue to strengthen and support communities by providing dynamic, inclusive, and responsive library services over the next 30 years and beyond.

Acting County Librarian Amanda Branigan explained: ‘The panel will consist of current and former library staff, along with long standing library borrowers. We are looking forward to an evening of stories and reminiscences of events and characters that have contributed to the rich and varied history of the library, with lots of laughs and memories along the way.’

All are welcome but numbers are strictly limited. Please RSVP by emailing or phone 042-9353190.

Customers ripped off with ‘sneaky’

30 day notice rule

states Senator

CONSUMERS should be allowed to cancel their TV and internet service contracts which have ended without giving 30 days notice, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator John McGahon said: “Virgin Media and Three Ireland are two such providers who insist on asking customers to give 30 days notice to cancel their contract, even if it has come to an end. This is proving a massive disincentive for customers to switching providers and saving money.

“The imposition by some telecommunications companies on customers of a 30 day notice period before they can switch is essentially charging customers to leave as consumers typically want to switch providers once their contact is up to save money.

“Customers should receive proper, written notice that their contract is coming to an end and inform them of what their options are once it has ended, but this is not happening with all providers. When customers contact the company themselves to finish their contract, they are then being told they must give 30 days notice.

This is a sneaky tactic used by providers, as this contract cessation process is not always explicitly stated when providers are getting consumers to sign up to their services in the first place.

“In 2022, ComReg brought commercial court proceedings against Virgin, alleging non-compliance with Universal Service Regulations because its process for allowing a customer to switch providers acts as a disincentive – however, the company

still continues to make customers give 30 days notice.

“This is a rip off for consumers that comes amid a backdrop of mobile and internet service providers linking the price of their mobile and broadband packages to inflation, with increases of 3% on top of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation each year. While inflation has fallen in recent months, prices show no sign of falling and customers are hit with a double whammy of being trapped in their contract for 30 more days if they want to switch to a cheaper provider.

“Consumers deserve better and ComReg needs to come down harder on telecommunications providers who are insisting on the 30 day rule,” Senator McGahon concluded.

Ecumenical Easter Walk

The traditional ecumenical walk marking the true meaning of Easter took place in Dundalk on Good Friday when local clergy and parishioners re-enacted The Carrying of the Cross.

The annual event, which is held by St Patrick’s Parish in conjuction with the Church of Ireland, began at St Patrick’s Cathedral with the procession making its way through the streets of the town to St Nicholas Parish Church (the Green Church).

Let Me Entert-Wayne You!

WAYNE Carr has been a welcome addition to the local busking scene over the past few months with the talented South African native belting out hits old and new in front of the Clanbrassil Centre in Dundalk since January.

Wayne can be regularly seen standing on the street with his guitar and fedora hat as he entertains the people of Dundalk with his vast songbook including many Irish classics. As Wayne explains, his love for Irish music in particular was born when a friend bought him a Gibson banjo and a mandolin which led him down the road of classic Irish bands such as the Dubliners.

“I’m South African and came to Ireland about 21 years ago settling in Belfast. I’ve been playing music for around 45 years in all kinds of scenarios like pubs, churches, stadiums and street corners. I had my days with a couple of bands back in the 80’s but never hit the big time. Of course I’ve done a few other things to pay the bills such as Aircraft electrician and Technical illustrator.

“Our family was musical though not on a professional level, but I certainly got my love for singing from my folks. Although they were of Irish descent we never listened to much Irish music. That started when I was given a very classy Gibson banjo and

Mandolin by a friend. That started me on the road to listening to bluegrass and Irish music. I loved them both and it wasn’t long before I had a good collection of Dubliners.

“First time I busked was in 2012 in Belfast. I’ve never been nervous performing but there was a lot to learn so it took a while to get the hang of it. I prefer a good crowd indoors because my fingers aren’t freezing but to be honest if the crowd sucks I’d rather be on the street.

According to Wayne the reception he has got since January from the people of Dundalk has been second to none with countless people stopping to compliment him on his performance.

“I’ve been coming to Dundalk since January and the people there are great (the best). They seem to have a greater appreciation for the details than some other places I’ve played. I al-

ways enjoy singing and on the street it never feels like work. Restaurant gigs are the most tedious but beggars can’t be choosers.

“I do a lot of different towns because being in one place every day doesn’t work. The weather is also a big factor.

“My advice for young buskers is: Pay your dues and learn your instrument. Throw your iPhone away! We don’t need karoake on the street. Vary your repertoire and no need to play too loud. Do a few proper studio recordings to hear your actual sound and find out if you’re singing in tune,” laughs Wayne.

If you would like to see Wayne play in a more intimate setting he can often be found playing live at the Vic Bar and INF (Forresters) in Warrenpoint on Saturdays. Check the venue listings to see when Wayne plays next.

Louth Athlete smashes multiple Irish records at European Championship

THE European Masters Indoor Athletics Championships took place in Toruń, Poland, from the 17th to the 23rd of March. Local athlete, Geraldine Finegan, took part and successfully took home two bronze medals and smashed three Irish records.

Geraldine Finegan, known for her multi-event records, entered 8 events in the championship, including the Pentathlon and was selected to run the 4 x 200m alongside Blackrock sportswoman Mary Scanlon from Blackrock AC. This was a proud moment for both Finegan and Scanlon as they have known each other for years and Finegan had been Scanlon’s first ever athletics coach.

Finegan competed in the most events out of anyone in the Championship at 14 events in total.

As she is nearing the end of her age category (55-60), Finegan’s main goal was to improve her performance and break records, which she definitely succeeded in, breaking the national Irish record in triple jump by almost a metre, jumping 9.32m which put her in 4th place. The javelin event was close as Finegan was in second place up until the last throw by a Finnish contender, having Finegan end up with a bronze medal but another national record.

Finegan was able to recover from her other events and hoped

to improve for the 60m hurdles which was the first of the 5 pentathlon events she was to compete in. She successfully improved the record by .14 of a second. The pentathlon was fiercely contested with the current world champion from Germany, Barbara Gatling, winning and Sweden only a few points behind. Although they took the top two places, Finegan was happy to take home her second European bronze medal.

Overall, Finegan helped team Ireland finish 7th out of the 38 nations competing, showing her

and the team’s extraordinary talent and determination. It was a remarkable display of their skill and versatility, having amassed a total of 62 medals, consisting of 23 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze. The team was made up of many athletes from all over the country, including 3 Louth athletes, all from the North East Runners Dundalk Club, the club alone taking home 5 of the 62 medals won. Finegan said that she felt that she had performed better than usual at this championship as she had improved her own skills and broke multiple Irish records.

She won eight medals the previous year in Italy, six more than she did this year, but she personally believes that improving on her own skills is worth more than winning medals. She said that her hardest event was the pentathlon as so many events in a short amount of time are very tiring.

Finegan was most pleased with her pole vault performance with a lifetime best and a national record of 2.60m, saying that it’s thrilling to cross the bar, also stating that “as you age, it’s the one event you can still keep improving”.

Finegan encourages all young athletes to take part in as many events as possible and advises coaches and parents not to have their athletes specialise too young. Finegan says that she’s “still trying” new events and improving on her current ones.

Group look to tackle issue of feral cats in Dundalk

A DUNDALK woman who is a member of the animal support group ‘Feral & Stray Cats Dundalk’ has spoken about the problem of feral cats in the area.

According to founding member, Olivia Donnelly from Manydown Close, ‘Feral & Stray Cats Dundalk’ was set up over a year and a half ago to help around 250 feral cats.

“A feral female cat had kittens down my back garden so I had had her neutered and had the kittens neutered and re-homed,” said Olivia.

“I was chatting about the problem of feral cats to other people and we decided to set up a group to help them.

“There is a good ten of us in the group now and we have neutered 34 cats, both male and female. We started last Summer.”

Olivia added: “We have tamed, neutered and re-homed 22 kittens. I have a three-yearold son called Michael and the kittens are well

socialised before they go to their new families.

“We wait until the mother cats have weaned the kittens at around five weeks and then trap the mother and get her neutered.

“We do some crate training at first to get the kittens and cats used to the indoors because they can hiss and bite. Then we let them have the run of the house so they get used to house noises.”

She continued: “The cats and kittens wouldn’t be used to vacuum cleaners. We wait

until the female kittens are four months old then get them neutered and re-home them.

“We also feed 82 cats daily in and around the area. Some people threaten to poison or drown them so we take the kittens for safety.

“We have stopped breeding from three large colonies of cats so there is no breeding in that area now.”

Olivia concluded: “It’s a long process. We try to give as much information and help as we can. It’s better to have cats neutered so they

are healthy and really strong. We are working on the fourth colony now. We study the colonies. It takes a lot of time and we also have to do fundraising.

“We encourage anyone who has cats to get them neutered. It’s worth the expense and time for yourself and the cat.”

Castle Players stage Agatha Christie’s ‘The Hollow’

JOIN the Castle Players for four nights of murder, mystery, and subterfuge as they bring Agatha Christie’s The Hollow to An Táin Arts Centre at 8.00pm from Wednesday, 17th April, to Saturday, 20th.

Described as “a thriller of passion and betrayal” The Hollow was first published as a novel in 1946 and was originally a very successful Poirot story. However, having “grown tired of her Belgian detective” Agatha Christie removed Poirot from the story when she adapted it for the stage, preferring instead to “let the whole cast shine” and shine they do in true Castle Players style.

As the family begin arriving at The Hollow, the home of Sir Henry and Lady Angkatell, they are looking forward to a civilised weekend entertaining Dr John Cristow, a suave Harley Street doctor, and his seemingly dim wife Gerda, with a selection of games, good food and a little bit of target practice. Unfortunately, the weekend is thrown disarray by the inconvenience of a murder.

At the helm are Irene Barr and Paul Casey.

Irene plays lady Angkatell, the charismatic, if somewhat eccentric hostess. Her only wish is for Ainswick, her ancestral home, to remain in the family. Paul plays the distinguished Sir Henry, an ex-governor of India and a man capable of keeping his composure as Lady Angkatell’s chaos flitters around him.

Brian Halpin takes on the role of Dr John Cristow, the lothario who seems to have it all and is oblivious to the feelings of those around him, especially his much put upon wife Gerda, brilliantly played by Siobhan Rankin.

Angela Hanna will play Henriett Anketell a successful sculptress and

cousin of Sir Henry. She is a close friend of Gerda’s and is the mistress of Gerda’s husband John Cristow.

Edward Angkatell, who inherited the Ainswick estate and, much to the annoyance of Lady Angkatell, remains unmarried, is played by Peter Hoey.

Melissa Casey is Midge Hardcastle, the warm-hearted, proud but poor relation who, and to the bewilderment of the others, “works for a living”.

Madhavi Pasapula plays Veronica Craye, a Hollywood actress and femme fatale who has rented a cottage nearby. She arrives at the Hollow unexpectedly intent on

winning back the heart of her long-lost first love, John Cristow.

Inspector Colquhoun, Niall McCann, and Sergeant Penny, Adrienne Whelan, need to keep their wits about them as they try to untangle the web of lies woven around them by the Angkatell family, particularly Lady Angkatell.

Newcomers to the stage, Shane Kelly and Siobhan DeBhal, play Gudgeon the ever-faithful butler, and Dorris the under-housemaid. Gudgeon is of the opinion that Dorris is totally unsuited for the position, as her father “votes Labour”. Whereas Doris would love nothing more than to bring Gudgeon

down a peg or two. This production of The Hollow is the vision of co-directors Nigel Clinton and Pat McKenna. They are ably assisted by Nessa Toale, Debbie McKenna, Valerie Rogers, Kayleigh McCabe, Siobhan Owens, Charlotte McBride, Deirdre Kerr and David McKenna.

€1,000 Raised for Lourdes Pilgrimage

Dundalk man Patsy Halpenny is “delighted” supporters of the Dundalk Gun Club helped to raise over €1,000 to fund an assisted pilgrim’s journey to Lourdes this June. “We are going from June 10 to 14 later this year. We hope to be taking 30 assisted pilgrims; they will also be accompanied by pilgrims and nurses and doctors,” said Patsy. “I first went to Lourdes in 2008. I’ve been every year since then bar two years because of Covid-19. The annual meet-up for the Dundalk Gun Club went very well. There was a good turn out.” Picture shows Siobhan Rothwell (IALV) receiving the cheque from Patsy.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine.

Amen. Say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). M.T.

It has been a great learning experience for all members and the involvement of junior members learning about wild life and getting out doors to see and take part

Shelters, feeders, roosting areas, a bridge all had to be put in place to make use of the land available to us and ensure the safest habitat for the birds in a natural environment. In our first year we reared 250 pheasants and last year we reared 750 pheasants so the project has went from strength to strength and we aim to continue to reach around 750 pheasants a year. We have used out own funds raised by members contributions to purchase all building supplies, new incubators and hatchers, feed for birds all year around, and the normal expenses of running a sporting club, but to see the results of our efforts is worth the hard work. With the release of large numbers of male and female pheasants we hope to see an increase in the numbers of wild hatches on the land as wild life preservation is our main goal.

We have also run other projects such as a duck release program on the Rampart River in 2022 and also built duck nesting tubes in 2023 which are placed an areas for Mallard to use without being disturbed by predators. We hope to continue in our efforts to both game preservation and projects to bring the club forward, continuing to teach youth members about wild life and contribute back to the land owners and local charities.

Department quell fears around over-subscribed secondary schools

LAST week local TD Ruairí Ó Murchú expressed his worry in relation to an unpublished Department of Education report which showed that most local secondary schools are full or oversubscribed. When asked by the Dundalk Leader about those comments from the Sinn Fein TD a spokesperson from the Department of Education insisted that measures were currently being undertaken to help ensure sufficient capacity is in lace to meet future demand.

“The department has a strong forward planning function, using its Geographical Information System (GIS) and data from a range of sources, including Child Benefit data, enrolments and information on new residential developments, to plan for school place needs. Close engagement with stakeholders also informs this planning process.

“The annual enrolment process for new junior infants at primary and new first years at post-primary is a very large scale operation that is transacted at close to 4,000 schools across the country, involving some 140,000 pupils.

“As part of annual returns, schools indicate to the department whether they are oversubscribed with applications for admissions. Oversubscription at a school can be driven by a school of choice factor, duplications of applications across multiple schools,

St Vincent’s Secondary School

and external draw into an area. Schools set their own admissions policy in line with legislation, however the department’s priority is to ensure that schools in an area can, between them, meet school place needs.

“In order to plan for school provision and analyse the relevant demographic data, the department divides the country into 314 school planning areas and uses a Geographical Information System (GIS), using data from a range of sources, including CSO Census data, child benefit and school enrolment data, to identify where the pressure for school places across the country will arise and where additional school accommodation is needed at primary and post-primary level.

“Major new residential developments have the potential to alter the demand for school places at a local level. In that regard, as part of the demographic demand analysis, the department monitors planning and construction activity in the residential sector. This involves the analysis of data sources from Local Authorities and the CSO along with the engagement with local authorities and the construction

DUNDALK BRIDGE CLUB HOLD FUNDRAISER FOR SIMON COMMUNITY—Dundalk Bridge Club held a fundraiser on March 12th in aid of the Dundalk Simon Community. They raised €1340. only established in areas of demographic growth as the resources available for school infrastructure have to be prioritised to meet the needs of areas of significant population increase so as to ensure that every child has a school place.

sector. In this way, upto-date information on significant new residential developments is obtained and factored into the demographic analysis exercise. This is necessary to ensure that schools infrastructure planning is keeping pace with demographic changes, at a local level, where there is a constantly evolving picture with planned new residential development.

“Where demographic data indicates that additional provision is required, the delivery of such additional provision is dependent on the particular circumstances of each case and may, be provided through: Utilising existing unused capacity within a school or schools; Extending the capacity of a school or schools; Provision of a new school or schools.

“If additional accommodation is required, the aim to try and facilitate this, as much as possible, by way of expansion of existing schools rather than establishing new schools. The expansion of existing schools is consistent with wider government objectives under Project Ireland 2040 for an increased emphasis on compact growth. New schools are

“Additional capacity is planned at two projects in the Dundalk school planning area, at De La Salle College and St Vincent’s Secondary School. When complete, these projects will help to cater for the demand for school places.

“The department will continue to liaise with Local Authorities in respect of their County Development Plan and any associated Local Area Plans with a view to identifying any potential long-term school accommodation requirements across school planning areas.

“In addition, a capacity data gathering exercise has recently been rolled out nationwide to all post-primary schools. This seeks information on current year group enrolments and class bases, future projections for 2024 and 2025, enrolments for both mainstream and special education provision, current and future accommodation needs, and subjects/ timetabling arrangements at schools. This data will further support the existing analysis carried out to ensure sufficient capacity is in place to meet the demands,” concluded the spokesperson from the Department of Education.
