A 20-year-old man has appeared before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court charged in connection with last Saturday’s fatal road crash on the N1 at Carrickarnan.

Three people died and a fourth person was injured in the two car collision on the northbound carriageway, close to the border.

Keith Lennon of Forest Park, Dromintee, Co. Armagh was remanded in custody and will appear before Cloverhill District Court tomorrow. The ninth annual Patsy Kelly 5K run will once again take place this April and registration is now open for the event. The race which begins in Ard Easmuinn before finishing at the Clans pitch on the Ecco Road will take place on Saturday April 4 at 6.30pm.

The race which is held in memory of former Clans groundsman Patsy Kelly attracts in the region of 900 runners each year.

Following the sitting, Judge Deirdre Gearty refused bail while expressing the court’s sympathy to the families involved.

At approximately 2.15am on February 29 Gardaí and

emergency services were called to the scene of a twocar collision on the N1 at Carrickarnan. The occupants of one of the cars, a male (50s) and a female (80s), were pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 20s travelling in the second car was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-

threatening, while a second male (20s) also in this car was pronounced dead at the scene.

All three deceased have since been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where post-mortem examinations took place. The crash site and cars involved were examined by Garda forensic collision investigators

and local scenes of crime officers. Investigating Gardaí are appealing for information and particularly to road users who may have camera footage to make it available to them.

Junior Tidy Towns Initiative in Blackrock A generation of young environmentally aware volunteers is being encouraged and supported by the Blackrock Tidy Towns. The multi award winning volunteer organisation has launched their 2020 Junior Tidy Towns programme as a means of involving schoolchildren in Blackrock in becoming more aware of the environment around them.

There has been considerable interest and support for the initiative from the schools, parents and the pupils themselves resulting in this group of young volunteers attending the launch of the 2020 Junior Tidy Towns Programme at Blackrock Community Centre last week.

Marie McCallion of Blackrock Tidy Towns explained that as well as taking part in Tidy Towns events the group will carry out Bee & Butterfly Counts in Blackrock Community

The count information will be linked into the Biodiversity Ireland National Database in Waterford who record the bee, butterfly and general pollinator numbers for the whole island. All of these species play a centrally important role in natures eco system and are an indicator of shifts in climate changes.

Blackrock Tidy Towns welcomed the Beach Clean carried out by their members over the recent mid-term break.

Fridays for Future is an international movement of school pupils, started by global climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg, which sees students participate in initiatives, demonstrations and public events demanding action from political leaders on tackling climate change.

Blackrock student Eve Brosnan of the Dundalk branch explained that after the tragic wild-fires in Australia the movement felt it should respond in a practical way and so they undertook a sponsored clean-up of the north section of Blackrock beach. Among the items collected were plastic bags, cans, glass bottles, nappies and baby wipes, batteries, remains of fireworks, pipes, wires, bits of furniture and a cooking pot, many of which were brought ashore by recent storms.

North East Runners continue their impressive displays It proved to be another successful spell for North East Runners with a series of fine performances resulting in another impressive medal haul.

‘CĂşpla focal’ with Gaeil LĂş Following the success of the most recent event in late December, Gaeil LĂş will be hosting another event in Russell’s Gin Emporium on March 7 at 7pm.

The event is open to everyone no matter what level of Irish you have, from cĂşpla focal to fluency. The event takes place during Seachtain na Gaeilge, which runs for the first two weeks in March each year.

The December event attracted a

large crowd of local Gaeilgoeirs and Irish language enthusiasts and it is hoped this event will prove equally popular.

Gaeil LĂş is a volunteer group who are working with Conradh na Gaeilge to promote and spread the use of Irish in Co Louth. These events are an important element in the promotion of Irish in Co. Louth and is part of a wider plan to promote Irish in Louth.

cently opened a local Irish speaking Youth Club, Ă“gras DhĂşn Dealgan, which operates from the Conradh na Gaeilge building in Seatown place and is open to children from 5th class to 3rd year.

A series of presentations were given in mid and north Louth by Caoimhín Ó hEaghra, General Secretary of An Foras Pátrúnachta (AFP) on Wednesday February 26, in which he updated parents on the current campaign by AFP to open a gaelcholáiste in Co. Louth.

AFP intend to open and operate a full immersion school in Dundalk where the full range of all curricu-

lum subjects will be taught through Irish. Initially, to satisfy Dept. of Education requirements, AFP plan to open a school operating as a satellite of their gaelcholáiste in Balbriggan. This means that management and admin would be provided by the parent school and the timetable and curriculum would be planned so that some teachers would be shared to complement the permanent

teachers based in the satellite.

The objective is to grow the numbers attending the satellite so that it can operate as a standalone school as soon as possible, providing top class education through Irish to the children of Louth, under the patronage and management of An Foras Pátrúnachta.

The Department of Education has asked for further in-

formation, including details of the number of parents in Louth who want the option for their children to study in an Irish immersion environment. A substantial number of parents turned out to listen to AFP and to register their interest to ensure that their desire for a gaelcholáiste in Dundalk is heard by the Department and to ensure that in the future Louth parents have the guaranteed option

of access to post primary Irish medium education.

A number of parents have asked that this form be made publicly available. Any parent of a primary school pupil, or indeed already at secondary school, who have an interest in potentially sending their child/children to a secondary school with an Irish medium ethos at its core are urged complete a form and return it to AFP.

St Vincent’s Transition Year students have been busy preparing for the Junk Kouture national competition, with three lucky teams reaching the Eastern Regional Final in the prestigious event.

Green Christmas, Keep Me Posted and Burst of Colour were chosen from thousands of entries to take part in the hugely popular event and will take to the stage in The Helix Theatre in DCU this week.

Art teacher Carmel Clyne explained, ‘We are thrilled to have three teams through to the Eastern final this year. The teams involved have worked very hard this year to create innovative and creative designs. The standard each year is incredible, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to travel to Dublin and see the other competitors and their creations. It never fails to amaze me how varied and original the costumes are and the atmosphere during the show is electric.’

Trevor Giff, has created a little bit of history in following in his father’s footsteps by becoming Captain of Dundalk Golf Club.

His father Bert held the captaincy in 1998 having joined Dundalk Golf Club in 1981. He had previously been a member in Coolatin GC and Bodenstown GC and moved to Dundalk, with his family, through work.

He became a Council member in 1988.

Sons following fathers as Captains of Dundalk Golf Club is very rare but it is unlikely any family will match the Carrolls whose father Vincent was the Club’s first captain in 1905 and three of his sons - Vincent, Walter and Charles all subsequently held the role.

Last week’s drivein was a very special occasion for the Giff family and Bert was on hand to watch his son and Lady Captain Pauline Campbell perform the traditional Captain’s Drive-In in

front of a large crowd of Club members.

Trevor, who played hockey for Newry Olympic and soccer for Quay Celtic, took up golf on his arrival in Dundalk as a 16-yearold and now plays off eight. He has been a committee member at Quay Celtic since 2005 and club secretary since 2010.

He joined the Council of Dundalk Golf Club in 2008 and served a six-year term before returning in 2017. He has served on the Tournament, Membership and Course Committee and chaired both the Membership and Course Committees.

“It was a special moment and I was delighted that my father was there to see it. I hope that I get as much out of my year as Captain as he did. I am really looking forward to it and to working alongside our Lady Captain Pauline.

Louth Comhairle na nOg Civic Leadership Research

Louth Comhairle na nOg took part in a focus group consultation with a research team from Queens University. The purpose of the study is to examine the ongoing impact of the Conflict/ Troubles for children and young people and parents. This part of the project involves seeking the views of children on issues that are affecting them and their

community, gaps in services and what type of support they think would be appropriate.

The young people from Louth Comhairle na nOg are currently engaged in a two year Civic Leadership and Peace Building project which is funded by the EU PEACE IV Programme.

This project will help young people develop their skills knowl-

edge and attitudes in the area of conflict resolution and Peace Building. To date the group has completed training, organised study visits and facilitated dissemination events.

It is hoped by getting involved in this study with Queens the reality of life for young people in the border region will be included in the research

which will have policy and programme implications for the future. Many thanks to all the young people who get involved and to Dr. Mary-Louise Corr from Queens who facilitated the session.

The Civic Leadership and Peace Building Project is part of Louth County Council’s €3.5m Local Authority Action Plan.

This action plan has received funding from the EU’s PEACE IV Programme, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Match-funding for the project has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development in Ireland.

DkIT form new partnership Peter impresses at

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) and leading Irish building contractor, Walls Construction have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to further develop the relationship between both organisations.

The new corporate partnership reflects the institute’s on-going commitment to industry engagement for the purposes of research, innovation, graduate employment and education.

The agreement with the Dublin headquartered company will focus on four principal areas: 1.

Dundalk Golf Club Peter McCaughey, who was the form player at Dundalk Golf Club heading into Christmas, notched up his first win of 2020 on Sunday when he won the 14 Hole Singles Stableford competition.

He won by five points after shooting an impressive 38pts over the 14 Holes with Charlie Monahan (10) edging out Anthony McGuinness (20) for second place after both had finished on 33pts.

Storm Jorge may have swept across the course the previous day but it was nothing compared to the whirlwind start that McCaughey, playing off 20, had.

He had three successive three-point pars at the first, second and fifth before a birdie at the par five sixth gave him a four-point return and left him on 13pts after playing his opening

four holes.

Three two-point returns saw him finish the outward journey on 19pts before he unleashed another whirlwind start to the final seven holes.

He had a three-point par at the 10th and then a four-point par at the index one 11th followed by a three-point par at the par five 12th. That 10pt haul was followed by two-point bogey on 13 before he fired in back to back three-point pars on the 14th and 17th.

He finished with a two-point bogey five on the last for an overall return of 39pts which was reduced to 38pts when some of his pre-Christmas exploits were factored in.

New Irish medium Youth Club As part of a campaign to have a full immersion Gaelcholáiste open in Dundalk under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta, parents are also looking at how to promote Irish with the next generation.

The first step of this is to open a Youth Club ‘as Gaeilge’ supported by Ógras of Conradh na Gaeilge, with a maiden Registration Night for interested children which took place on February 13 in the Dundalk Conradh

na Gaeilge building, at 5 Seatown Place.

The club is open to children ranging from 5th class to 3rd year and all the games, activities and crafts will be conducted ‘as Gaeilge’.

This is an important element in the promotion of Irish in Co. Louth and the organisers believe that it needs as much support from all interested people as possible if it is to be a successful project.

LOUTH’S Na Piarsiagh and Hunterstown Rovers lined out for Louth in the Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidi Ó Sé 2020, with 36 adult men’s and ladies club teams descending on Kerry’s Dingle Peninsula last weekend.

In the round robin competition first round, Na Piarsaigh lost 2-11 to 0-6 to West Kerry side Castlegregory who are under the management of former Offaly senior football manager Stephen Wallace.

They fared better in the second round, beating Cork’s Boherbue 1-8 to 1-6 but failed to progress because of the earlier loss.

The local branch of the Irish Association of Lourdes Volunteers (IALV) were the beneficiaries of two successful fundraisers recently.

On Saturday in the Imperial Hotel one of the world’s leading darts players, Gary Anderson, took on a number of local players with the proceeds of the night going to the IALV. The event was organised by Finbarr Kelly, Mary Justine Gray and Marie Kindlon.

On the same night a cheque was presented in Byrnes Pub by Tony McComish and Patrick McEvoy of the Dundalk & District Game Protection Association following a recent fundraiser to the IALV following a nomination by Patsy Halpenny.

All proceeds will go towards funding 40 local John Toal and Tony McComish (Dundalk & District Game Protection Association) making a presentation to Beverley Carolan (IALV volunteer) children and adults on their trip to Lourdes.

The ‘Urban Green’ theme of the Dundalk St Patrick’s Day festival was evident at the launch of the event at Dundalk Gaol on Thursday evening when Trashion Fashion students attended in their creative outfits.

Secondary school students involved in Trashion Fashion have been chosen to be the grand marshalls of the green-themed parade.

The large number of people who attended the launch were treated to performances from the Men’s Shed Choir, McGee School of Dance and Dundalk Brass Band, all of whom are involved in the St Patrick’s Day festival in Dundalk this year.

Cllr. Maeve Yore, who is a member of the organising committee, explained that, in a break from tradition, the parade will take place on the evening of Monday March 16, starting at 7pm and using the original route from Patrick Street, through Church Street, Clanbrassil Street, Park Street and ending at Tesco Extra.

PayPal is the main sponsor of the parade and the company was represented by Margaret Ward, Senior Director and Site Lead, and a number of senior staff at the launch.

Cllr. Yore said the following day, March 17, will build on the success of the 2019 family fun day with two stages – at Market Square and the newly revamped St Nicholas Quarter and a family fun zone at Market Square. There will also be a St Patrick.

Wristbands, for access to the family fun zone, sponsored by Pelican Promotions, are now available for sale at Stitchcraft, Earl Street.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Cllr. Conor Keelan, told the audience he wanted to acknowledge the hard work and assistance of the committee members, Dundalk councillors, community representatives and business people ‘who contributed to ensuring that we followed through

He said it was the aim of the organisers to try to make the St Patrick’s Day festival in Dundalk in 2020 the ‘greenest ever public event in the town’.

Cllr. Keelan said: ‘Last year’s cultural and music event in Dundalk proved to be a success and it was important to build on this theme.

‘While retaining this music and cultural day for March 17, we took the decision to move the parade to the night of March 16. This is a new departure for Dundalk but there is nothing to fear from innovation in any field of work or enterprise as we can celebrate the theme of Urban Green over the course of two days’.

Cllr. Keelan also paid tribute to the assistance given to the committee by operations staff at Louth County Council – represented by Director of Service Frank Pentony, the emergency services – represented by Chief Fire Officer Eamon Woulfe – and Dundalk Gardaí - represented by Sgt. Barry Byrne.

‘We are delighted to be part of this festival and hope that it is successful in promoting the positive aspects of our community and bringing people together’.

Call to support Addiction Support Network

Sinn Féin TD for Louth Ruairí Ó Murchú has said that the work of the Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) must be adequately resourced by the next government.

Teachta Ó Murchú made the following comments at an event hosted by the Family Addiction Support Network to mark International Family Drug Support Day. “I have been working with the FASN for a number of years and the work they do with families is incredible.

“Unfortunately previous governments have underfunded this service and curtailed its excellent work.

“In fact this is the only voluntary service in Louth which works with the family members of people suffering addiction, rather than the person in addiction.

“Not only do these families endure the chaos of their loved one’s addiction and manage the effects of that on the extended family, they are often the subject of intimidation by drug dealers

themselves.

“Currently FASN provides the following services: 24/7 Out of Hours Telephone Helpline; One-to-one support; Peer Group Support; Access to Counselling; Access to Respite; Educational Programme; Assistance with Drugs Intimidation Reporting.

“The Family Addiction Support Network have prepared a budget which indicates that all of their services across 4 counties can be provided for little over €100,000 per year,” stated Mr Ó Murchú.
