Sophia Griffin will travel to St Louis this September for life changing surgery thanks to the generosity of people around Dundalk and farther afield.

Sophia is four years old and lives in Dundalk with her Mam, Catriona, Dad, Gerry and brother and sister.

Sophia was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy and PVL (Periventricular Leukomalcia) of the brain just after her 2nd Birthday in 2017. She has poor trunk control, and poor balance with abnormal gait and spasticity in both her legs.

Sophia has many struggles with her balance and with walking. She has very low endurance and therefore tires a lot. Sophia’s story was

brought to the public’s attention just after Christmas when her parents set up a facebook page explaining how they were hoping to raise €100,000 to send their daughter to St Louis in Missouri for a life changing operation. The first fundraiser for Sophia took place in February and in less than six months €100,000 has been raised to enable Sophia to travel to St Louis for her operation.

According to Sophia’s mother Catriona the family are so grateful for all the help they have received in raising money over the last number of months.

“It’s been a great couple of weeks for us with regards to Sophia,” explained Catriona.

Huge crowds for Paddy Cheshire 5k fun run

Sean O’Mahonys held proved to be a hugely the inaugural Paddy successful event.

Cheshire Memorial 5K The race, which was on Saturday last and it preceded by the Juve-

nile Sponsored Walk down the Navvy Bank at 4.30, attracted almost 300 runners and the whole day was run off very smoothly indeed with lovely weather and an almost flat course to contribute to fast times and add to the enjoyment of all.

The club would like to sincerely thank all the committee who put in Trojan work in organising the whole event and all the volunteers on the day, without which these events are not possible plus all the runners,

walkers, running club members who turned out in large numbers.

For all the kids who took part in the walk and returned a sponsorship card, there was a medal, a Sean O’Mahonys drinks bottle and some goodies plus face painting and refreshments back at the clubhouse.

It is a busy time for the Sean O’Mahonys as they will be holding the annual Golf Classic at Greenore Golf Club on Friday on Friday July 26. The proceeds from this year’s golf classic

will help to fund the completion of the new facilities on the Point Road.

Criticism over lack of mental health services in Dundalk

Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has strongly criticised the Minister for Health, the HSE and the Department of Health providing “contradictory, confused, and conflicting” information about the Dundalk Primary Care Centre.

Deputy Adams said: “Incompetence has been a mark of this government. Such incompetence leaves the most vulnerable in our society behind. The lack of Child and Adolescent Mental Health services CAMHS for the young people of north Louth is totally unacceptable”.

In correspondence last week the HSE told Mr. Adams that the provision of Dundalk Primary Care Centre is under review and has consequently been delayed.

“There are no Child and Adolescent Mental Health services in North Louth.

Children who need CAMHS have to travel to Drogheda

for services. I have visited the Day Care Centre at Ladywell in Dundalk and despite the best efforts of the staff the facilities are not fit for purpose,” Teachta Adams continued.

“It is impossible to deliver proper, effective community mental health services from a facility which is old and decrepit and not fit for purpose.

“A new Primary Care Centre for Dundalk was first announced in 2008 when the HSE advertised for expressions of interest to develop a centre. Ten years later not a brick has been laid.

“In November 2016 I was told that the operational lease process for the primary care centre would be completed in the first quarter of 2017.

“In August 2018, the HSE stated that the planning application would be submitted by the end of 2018; that work would commence in

“Last week I was told by David Walsh, the National Director of Community Operations, that Disability Services are now “seeking space in the Primary Care Centre”.

“While I welcome this why on earth was it not part of the original plan?

Mr. Walsh added: “This has resulted in a requirement to review the project … this has resulted in a delay … the new updated proposal will require additional approval from the HSE Property Resource Group”.

“Last Friday, two days later, I received a letter from Minister Harris which makes no mention of disability services. Nor does he mention the need to review the project.

“Nor does he state that the project will be delayed,” he added.

Dundalk golfers clinch their place in national final Dundalk Golf Club are in contention for another title after qualifying for the finals of the Officers Golf Challenge.

The Dundalk Team of Pat Davis, Criona O’Reilly and Sean Hession [Hon. Sec] emerged victorious on a day of difficult conditions in the recent qualifiers in Belfast.

Malone Golf Club in Belfast was one of the five golf clubs in Ireland to host an area qualifier for the annual Allianz/Irish Times Officers Golf Challenge last week.

A club pennant was on offer for Area Qualifier winners with

the top three teams laying claim to a place in the All Ireland Final in September.

To be eligible to compete a team had to consist of the Club men’s and ladies captains and any club officer and the Dundalk trio came out on top with a score of 81 points.

The runners up were neighbouring club Balmoral on 79 points and filling third place were the host club Malone on 76 points.

The winners can now look forward to playing 2006 Ryder Cup venue, the K Club, which is host club to this year’s final.

Vintage Club Road Run Knockbridge Vintage Club are holding a Road Run and Coffee Morning on Sunday July 7.

Picturesque Ballygassan was the location for the first senior camogie final of the year which saw St Brides (Knockbridge) take on their old rivals Mattock Rangers (Collon) on Saturday 22nd June with the Knockbridge girls coming out on top after an entertaining game.

In perfect conditions and on an excellent pitch, the game took off at a fast and furious pace, which we have now come to expect from the 9-a-side series.

The Brides, were first on the scoreboard with a well taken goal by Daire Hoey in the first minute. Mattock quickly re-

sponded with a point and the teams exchanged scores all the way to half time, the only difference was that some of the Brides scores were goals.

At half time the score was St Brides 4-3, Mattock 1-6.

The second half started again at an incredible pace with the Brides taking three unanswered points before a Jane McKeon converted penalty got Mattock back in the game. Another goal 10 minutes later set up an exciting nail biting finish that had every spectator from both sides, on their feet for the last five minutes.

by Louth PRO Seamus Capplis, who thanked both sides for a really exciting game of camogie which went right to the wire.

He was also delighted to see so many juvenile players now joining the senior ranks which was a tribute to the efforts of their club and county development teams.

St Brides captain, Niamh Sweeney thanked St Annes for the excellent facilities before very generously thanking Mattock for a hard fought and fair match before lifting the trophy.

Royal visitor to Dundalk Dundalk Leader 3rd July 2019

Dundalk hosted a royal visit last Tuesday as His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II came to town for a whistlestop tour of the area.

Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II is the king of one of the ten tribes of Nigeria in a region which is home to the Yoruba Kingdom. He is one of the richest monarchs in Africa and is held in very high esteem amongst the Yoruba people.

Accompanying the King on the trip were three other African Monarchs namely: HRM

Joseph Adewole Adebayo, the Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, HRM Michael Odunayo Ajayi, the Elerinmo of Erinmo-Ijesa and the HRM Adebanjo Adedini, the Asoya of Ile-Isoya.

The visit was put together by the “Team Tell Africa” whose sole responsibility is to propagate African’s ingenuity as well as promoting global peace under the Chairmanship of H.I.M. The royal group began their tour of Ireland with a trip to Ladywell Shrine in Dundalk before visiting the museum on Jocelyn Street where they were

greeted by curator Brian Walsh who gave the dignitaries a tour of the building.

Following their visit to the museum the group moved on to Oriel Park where they watched a match between the Afro Stars FC (a selected XI from Dundalk and across Ireland) and the Cavan and Monaghan U19’s side.

The Afro Stars came out on top in an entertaining match which they won 2-0. Dundalk FC under-19s goalkeeper and Afro Stars captain David Odumosu received the trophy

from the king (pictured above), whilst his U19s teammate Gabriel Adebambo and under17s players Jamal Ibrahim and goalscorer Val Adedokun also represented the Lilywhites.

Before the game Dundalk FC community officer Liam Burns welcomed Ooni Ogunwusi to Oriel Park and presented him with a home jersey signed by the entire first team squad.

“Everyone here at Dundalk Football Club is honoured to have such a distinguished guest with us here today at His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II with Brian Walsh of Dundalk Museum Oriel Park,” said Burns.

Launch of €35m project to improve water quality in Carlingford Lough

A major cross-border project which aims to improve water quality in Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle through enhanced wastewater treatment was officially launched today in Derry.

The Shared Waters Enhancement & Loughs Legacy (SWELL) project, which has been awarded €35m under the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, will see the construction of new wastewater treatment works as well as upgrades to sewerage networks on both sides of the border to address wastewater pollution in Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle.

The four-year project – which is being led by Northern Ireland Water working in partnership with Irish Water, the Agri-Food Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Loughs Agency and East Border Region - will culminate in the development of a unique environmental legacy model that can be used to achieve further improvements in water quality in these shared waters.

Paul Harper, Director of Asset Delivery at NI Water, said: “Northern Ireland Water is pleased to be lead partner in this strategic EU-funded project which will improve wastewater treatment for an additional

10,000 people on a cross-border basis.

“The project provides a welcome opportunity for both water utilities to work collaboratively to prioritise and align projects in a coordinated way so as to make maximum positive impact on the shared waterbodies on the island of Ireland.”

The work being carried out under the SWELL project will involve a total of eight wastewater infrastructure upgrades, as well as catchment studies and ecosystem modelling, within the Carlingford Lough drainage basin (within Newry, Mourne & Down and Louth council areas)

and the Lough Foyle drainage basin (comprising Derry City & Strabane and Donegal council areas). The improvements to the wastewater assets will help contribute to raising the current EU Water Framework Directive status of ‘moderate’ to ‘good’.

Match-funding for the project has been provided by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government in Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland.

in Ireland, stated: “Without safe and reliable water and wastewater infrastructure, social and economic development cannot happen.

“So I am pleased to be here today to officially launch the SWELL project which will play an important role in improving water quality in Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle through cross-border partnership working.”

The unique ecosystem model being developed through SWELL, will link various aspects of environmental modelling such as urban drainage, river, coastal and ecology, undertaken

in the catchments of the respective loughs over the lifecycle of the project.

Through extensive investigations and use of innovative modelling techniques, the SWELL ecosystem model will be able to track the pathways of nutrients and contaminants of wastewater, industrial or agricultural sources to determine their impact on the receiving waters.

This legacy model will assist the water utilities and regulatory bodies on both sides of the border by identifying best approaches to achieving further improvement of overall water quality in the future.

A new era for Dundalk Cricket Club began on Sunday as the first team played their very first game in their new ground in Hiney Park on the Carrick Road in Dundalk. The club had been operating out of Dromiskin since 2010 but members felt a move into town would help grow the club and early this year they set the wheels in motion for a move to Hiney Park which is located next to Oriel Park on the Carrick Road.

Dundalk Cricket Club was initially established in 1853 but after many years in the wilderness the club reformed in 2009 before joining the cricket Leinster leagues in 2010.

For the past nine years the club have played their home matches in Dromiskin but at the start of this year they began discussions with the Grammar School in Dundalk with a view to moving to the school’s playing pitches on the

National Ability Supports System must deliver greater services – Ó Murchú

Louth Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has welcomed the new ‘National Ability Supports System’ which will collect and store information about HSE services for people with disabilities.

Councillor Ó Murchú said: “At the recent June meeting of Louth Disability Forum, members were given a comprehensive presentation by Gerard McCartney, Disability Databases Manager for Louth, regarding the new National Ability Supports System.

“In real terms the information collected on this system will make it easier for people with disabilities and their families to access State supports and services including day, respite and residential places; physiotherapy, OT, speech and language therapy, psychology and nursing support, assistive products such as hoists and wheelchairs.

“Far too many families across Louth are not receiving the supports which they are entitled to as Irish citizens,” continued Cllr Ó Murchú.

“I am working with numerous families of people with disabilities who are afraid of what the future will bring for them and their loved one. I encourage families to make sure that the HSE has all of their information so that their needs are registered. This is the only way to make a strong case to the HSE for resources to be allocated to County Louth and to help ensure that families in Louth receive the services they need.

“Gerard McCartney confirmed to me that the new database is designed using Agile methodology which will allow for a much more responsive and adaptable system. The HSE are using the database to help plan, develop and organise disability services and supports and to lobby for resources.

“It is also useful that over 65 staff from other service providers such as Rehabcare and Talbot Group can access and input into the database as well. I hope that the new system will make a positive difference to people’s lives,” he added.

According to club member Brent Higginbotham the school were very open to the idea of Dundalk Cricket Club moving into Hiney Park and he believes the deal can be beneficial for both sides.

“The Grammar School very kindly allowed us to take a lease out on Hiney Park and we believe moving into town will help grow our

club and help us attract some new members. A big focus for us all here at the club is to develop our underage structures and we will be starting up junior cricket camps later in the year and we will also be working with the Grammar School who actually have their own cricket team in the school.

“The move to Dundalk is one which our players have been asking for as it is much

easier to get to and easier for opposition teams to find as well. Hopefully we can also attract students from DkIT to come down and have a look at our set up and come and join the club.

We currently play in Division 10 of the Leinster league and have maybe 25-30 members.

We train every Wednesday between 7pm and 9pm in Hiney Park and anybody is more than welcome to come down

and have a look at what we’re all about. We’re always looking for new members of any skill level and all playing equipment is supplied by the club. Just come along and play,” stated Brent.

Dundalk GC miss out in final

Despite hosting the event in Dundalk, the Senior Panel were beaten in the Regional Final of the AIG Senior Cup on Sunday by an excellent Laytown & Bettystown team who now progress to the Leinster quarter-final.

The Meath men laid down a very impressive marker in the strokeplay qualifying on Saturday when they led home the field by six shots with a combined score of 292 from the four counting scorecards. Greenore came next on 298 with Dundalk on 301 and Skerries on 302 as the top four advanced to Sunday’s matchplay semi-finals.

Laytown booked their place in the final with a comfortable 4-1 win over Skerries but the other semi-final went right to wire.

Eric Beggs back for seventh trek

Local fundraiser Eric Beggs will lead the Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Fighting Blindness for a seventh year this August. The Lisdoo Road man has been a huge supporter of the Fighting Blindness charity over the last number of years and has raised well in excess of €100,000 for the charity.

He has organised various charity events such as Chapel gate collections, quizzes and sponsored walks with the Cooley Trek being the main source of fundraising each year. Eric was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP) which unfortunately can’t be cured. Eric first started having difficulties with his sight in his early 20s and it has progressed to the stage that now in his sixties he is completely blind. He has been a keen supporter of the charity ‘Fighting Blindness’ and is a huge admirer of the work they do around the country.

“They are doing marvellous work in fighting blindness and I am absolutely convinced that they will have a treatment and cure for blindness in the very near future” explains Eric.

“Although it’s too late to help me I am determined to make sure that I can do as much as I can to ensure there is a cure for younger people who have sight difficulties which is why I originally organised the

Cooley Mountain Trek. I have to say that people in Dundalk have been wonderful and I thank every one of them who has taken part in the walk over the last seven years. I’d like to thank all the sponsors and everybody who helped me out and we’re hoping this year will be just as successful as previous outings.

This year’s Trek will take place on Sunday August 4 and will start at the Lumpers Pub in Ravensdale.

The 10km will begin at 11am and transport for this walk is available with a free bus leaving the Lisdoo at 10:30pm. There is also a 5km walk which begins at Noon and again a free bus will leave the Lisdoo at 11:30am for those taking part in the shorter distance.

Registration for the event costs just €20 and there will be some light refreshments and music after the walk in the Lumpers for all who take part. There will also be a barbecue (weather permitting) outside the Lumpers Pub. Later that evening there will be a second fundraising event on in the Lisdoo with music by Vertigo, finger food and a disco afterwards. That event starts at 9pm and all are invited to attend. There is a €10 admission fee.

Success for CúChulainn Archers Four members of CúChulainn Archers took part in the Phillip Reynolds Shoot hosted

by Greenhills Archery Club in Dublin recently. Against the odds, the weather was sunny and a great day was had by all.

This competition is designed to encourage young and new archers, as well as catering for the more experienced archer as well.

Competitions were at the whole range of distances, with CúChulainn’s youngest competitive member, Nina Flanagan taking home a Gold

medal in the Junior category, her father, Ciarán took the Silver in Senior Compound with Christy Banks taking Gold in the Masters category, and Claudia Heinze taking Silver in the Senior Barebow category.

With two Golds and two Silver the four CúChulainn members brought home a good result for the club.

Last weekend the same four members took part in the traditional ‘5th Anniversary Shooting the Clout Competition’, hosted this time by Ashbourne Archers. This ancient competition consists of Recurve

and Longbow archers shooting at a circle on the ground.

The winner is the archer who gets closest to the centre of the circle. To get into the circle which is set at a distance, the arrow must be shot into the air at an angle. Each arrow must bear the name of the archer to distinguish it from the other arrows.

Once more the CúChulainn Archers members came home with medals, with Claudia, Nina, Christy and Ciarán taking home two Gold and two Bronze between them. Altogether a great couple of week-

ends for CúChulainn’s archers who had thoroughly enjoyed the events.

Also competing the same weekend - but a little farther afield - was James Moloney who was shooting in the NFAS 3D Championships in Nottingham in England. This was James’ first time to shoot this competition and he finished a creditable 27th in what is a very challenging 2 day event.

Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has highlighted that the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance will be paid in early July, and has also encouraged families who don’t receive an automatic payment to make an application for the allowance.

“The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is a once-off payment to assist eligible families with the extra costs when children start school each autumn.

“In 2018, 5,352 Louth families received the allowance to help them with the cost of school clothing and footwear at what is an expensive time of year,” he explained.

“The majority of eligible families in Louth will receive an automatic payment from the week beginning July 8, which is great as it allows families sufficient time to prepare for back to school. These families will receive written confirmation before the end of this month informing them of their automatic entitlement.

“People can apply up to September 30 on www.mywelfare.ieor by picking up application form from in their local Intreo Centre.

You can also get this form by texting ‘Form BTSCFA’ followed by your name and address to 51909, or by sending an email to BSCFA@welfare.ie,” added Cllr McGahon.

Local company Servisource hit the open water last week to represent Louth in this year’s Volvo Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Race. The team competed in the race which saw 42 teams battle the rough seas and harsh downpours for the number one spot.

The team composed of Servisource representatives CEO Declan Murphy, his wife Marguerite, IT Manager Ron Finegan, together with Pat McCormack, President Dundalk Chamber, local businessman Eamonn Toner and Nicolas Potel who completed the six person crew.

The group spent several weeks training on Carlingford Lough in their 37-foot yacht, Zuri leading up to the race practis-

ing multiple manoeuvres and team-building exercises to prepare for the endurance test which commenced on Wednesday June 12 at 6pm.

The start line positioned just off the pier at Dun Laoghaire saw 43 boats line up for the gun which included another boat with Louth connections.

‘Raw’ the only foiling keelboat in the race was crewed by Irish Olympic hopefuls Conor Fogarty and UK based Susan Glenny. Susan’s mum hails from Kilkerley and the duo plan to represent Ireland in the mixed two-person offshore keelboat at the 2024 Olympics.

Zuri skipper Declan Murphy found the race to be a rewarding experience: “There is no

such thing as smooth sailing in sail racing. The weather conditions were favourable but at times challenging for most of the race with winds getting to force 6/7 on the south west coast.

However, with every challenge comes an opportunity and a first rounding of the Fastnet rock by four of the six crew members was definitely a highlight. The endeavour also provided the group with a unique venture to see the beautiful Irish coastline from a perspective that is unparalleled in scope and views. We look forward to competing again next year and hope the voyage will be just as rewarding.”

MAD Youth Theatre head for Kilkenny Eight members of MAD Youth Theatre will be heading off for Youth Theatre Ireland’s National Festival of Youth Theatres in Kilkenny on July 3.

Youth Theatre Ireland every year invite 13 youth theatres from across the country to take part in a glorious five memorable filled days in Kilkenny College.

They will participate in theatre skills workshops by day and fun social activities in the evenings, getting to know other like-minded young people from other youth theatres making friends for life.

They will be accompanied by MAD Youth Theatre leaders Gerry Ball and Antonio Di Mare who will also get an opportunity to meet other leaders and come away with some new skills.

A local disability campaigner is calling on theatres and event organisers to recognise the work of carer does for a person with a disability by either giving them a discount or letting them in for free.

Brendan Moore who is a member of the Polio Survivors and Post-Polio Support Group wants a new policy brought in nationwide under a set criteria which will ensure carers get a fair deal when attending shows disabled people.

“I would love to see theatres and event organisers recognise the great work a carer does for a person with disability by offering discounts. I know the policy in the Iontas theatre in Castleblayney is that the carer accompanying the person with a disability they either get entry to the event free or up to 50%

“I believe this should be applauded and copied nationwide with a set criteria which could include ensuring that the tickets are purchased either by phone or in person. The carer must produce a ‘Family Carers Ireland’ ID badge which will have the carers name on it and the name of the person they are looking after.

“I have recently written to the promoters of both the Táin theatre and Drogheda Arts Centre asking them to bring in some sort of discount and I would love if other promoters who have shows scheduled in hotels or venues across the county would follow suit and offer some sort of discount for carers,” added Brendan.

Paul Hayes the director and general manager of An Táin Arts Centre in Dundalk noted that theatres around the country have

“There are limited wheelchair spaces in the main theatre (in front of row A) and in the studio theatre (in the front row, and back row) and these can be booked through our box office. Apart from booking fees (€1.50 per ticket from September 1st 2019), tickets for wheel-

tre, our box office reserves several seats in row A for patrons who have mobility issues. These seats can be booked through our box office, as they are not put on general sale until the week of the event.

“Theatre across Ireland had 4 different solutions to Brendan’s query: 1-the carer and the person with the disability go free.

2-the carer goes free but the person with the disability pays a concession price.

3- the both pay a concession price.

4- the person with the disability goes free, but the carer pays.

“As our wheelchair positions are right at the front of the main theatre, we have a policy that the wheelchair user goes free but that carer pays,” stated Paul.

Majority support legislation to lower whiplash court payouts

Almost 70% of Irish motorists support the introduction of legislation designed to lower court payouts relating to whiplash injuries, a recent survey has found.

In response to an AA Ireland survey of over 4,000 motorists, 68.79% of respondents indicated that they would strongly support such a measure being taken. Meanwhile, a further 21.19% stated they would be somewhat supportive of such legislation being introduced, with just over 3% of respondents stating they would be opposed to such a move.

“When you compare compensation awards in Irish courts to those in other countries, for example the United Kingdom, there is noticeable issue with awards here being out of line with the extent of the injury suffered. Unfortunately, some people do suffer legitimate whiplash injuries, or

much worse as a result of a car accident and these people deserve to be fairly compensated. However, we do need to look at steps that can be taken to bring Irish awards in line with international standards,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated.

“In terms of efforts to combat high car insurance costs, it is fair to say that excessive injury payouts in some instances is only one factor in a much wider problem.

Unfortunately, we do have a problem with people opting to bypass the Personal Injuries Assessment Board in the hopes of securing a higher payout in court and this issue needs an urgent fix.”

Meanwhile, in relation to compensation for non-whiplash injuries, the survey found that a smaller majority of respondents were in favour of steps being taken to limit court awards.

When asked to exclude compensation for whiplash injuries, 54.74% of those surveyed stated they would strongly support government measures designed to lower court compensation payouts, with a further 28.54% indicating they would be somewhat supportive of this approach.

“Where court awards are concerned, it does appear that there’s at least a minor schism in people’s attitudes for compensating those who supper whiplash injuries compared to those who suffer non-whiplash injuries in an accident. Ultimately, irrespective of the nature of the injury, those with a legitimate grievance deserve to be fairly compensated for any earnings lost as well as medical costs,” Faughnan added.

“However, in the majority of cases, there really should be no need for the courts to be involved in order to agree a fair settlement.”
