Inspirational Fiona Arnold has raised just over €5500 for a cause which has affected her for more than half her life. The Philipstown native was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis shortly after giving birth to son Conor in 1995 and has lived with the disease for the best part of 26 years.

Fiona took it upon herself to try and raise some much-needed funds for the North East Branch of MS Ireland and pledged to walk from her front gate down her lane and back (almost 500 metres) every time she received a donation. With the aid of her walker this took Fiona in or around 30 minutes to complete and she did this every day for two weeks as the donations came rolling in.

In the end Fiona received 151 donations which added up to a massive €5518 all of which will be given to the North East branch of MS Ireland.

After the two weeks were completed Fiona had walked an incredible 72.96 miles which is the equivalent of walking to her home in Mosstown, Philipstown to Dun Laoghaire in Dublin.

“Mam was diagnosed just after I was born in the mid90’s. She went to the doctor and he told her she had MS. Her grandmother also had MS too so it is in the family. Walking is tough for mam as she is unsteady on her feet even with the walk aid and she is also partially blind. She went out every day in rain, hail and snow, and it did snow for a couple of the days, and she did on average maybe four laps every day.

“We want to thank tourcommunity who were very supportive of the fundraiser and many people would give Mam a beep when they saw her out walking. Our local GAA club St Kevin’s helped spread the word and make the whole thing a success,” stated Conor.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, especially the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. This can lead to a wide range of symptoms throughout the body. The local branch of MS Ireland thanked Fiona for her efforts while outlining the valuable services

which her fundraising efforts have helped to preserve.

“MS Ireland North East Office is delighted with the fundraising efforts of one of our volunteers, Fiona Arnold. Fiona decided to fundraise for MS Ireland Louth Branch at a time when fundraising opportunities for voluntary branches have been greatly reduced as a result of COVID 19. MS Ireland Louth Branch provides funds for valuable services in the Multiple Sclerosis community in Louth. During the Covid 19 pandemic, the branch have financially supported the provision of online physiotherapy and yoga programmes to the Louth MS Community.

The programmes provided, encourage physical activity, positive mental health and well-being. The programmes offer opportunities for peer support and engagement in the community, at a time when people feel very isolated. Fiona’s fundraising has ensured sustained programme delivery and we are very grateful for her efforts,” concluded the statement.

It’s three weeks since residents in Dealgan House received their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and according to Director of Nursing, Fintan Farrelly, the relief is almost palpable amongst residents in the home.

The privately run nursing home suffered one of the worst outbreaks of the virus in the country during the first wave last year with 23 residents sadly passing away. Thankfully there have not been any cases at all in the home since last May and with the recently administered vaccine Fintan states that there is a sense of euphoria and relief in recent weeks amongst the residents.

“The vast majority of our residents and staff received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine three weeks ago so there is understandably a great atmosphere in the home

If you have had Covid in the previous 28 days you cannot get the vaccine so it was those staff members who got their second dose this week,” explained Fintan.

“Obviously we went through a very tough period

last year and it’s fantastic now to have everybody vaccinated and to see the mood lifted as our staff and residents look forward to returning to some sort of normality.

“As soon as we had everybody vaccinated we contacted public health to ask about timelines with regards to letting visitors back in and lifting restrictions. We haven’t heard anything back

yet but hopefully there can be an easing of some of the restrictions on us when it is completely safe to do so,” stated Fintan. “It’s difficult at the moment as residents have to be socially distant and that can be difficult for the hard of hearing who find it difficult to engage in conversations when not close to the person talking.

“We were encouraged

by what Ronan Glynn from NPHET and Paul Reid from the HSE have said in recent days and as I said we look forward to taking another step back towards some sort of normality in the coming weeks. We have already resumed corridor visits where there is perpex between the visitor and resident whereas previously the visitor couldn’t come inside so slowly but surely things are improving,” stated Fintan.

Meanwhile the HSE have claimed that the vaccines administered in nursing homes are already having an effect with the number of coronavirus cases reported from nursing homes falling by more than 80 per cent in a week.

HSE chief clinical officer Dr Colm Henry said last week that the cases in residential centres fell from 482 in the week to February 14 down to 91 just a week later.

Arts centre welcome funding

An Táin Arts Centre in Dundalk has been allocated €90,000 in funding by the Arts Council of Ireland, according to An Táin

Director Paul Hayes.

“It’s up 120 per cent on last year so we are delighted with that, however many arts centres are not happy with their allocations,” he said.

“It came with many stipulations including much of the funding must go directly to the artists.

“For those centres who are unhappy with their allocations they thought they would be getting money for the artists and for day-today running costs.”

Paul added: “We’ve changed our programme to an off-site programme for the year and as our funding was quite low, the new allocation is massively welcome.

“We will get it over the course of the year.

We can apply and start drawing it down as and when needed.

“Normally the announcement would be made at the end of the year but there was a delay, perhaps due to Covid-19.”

He continued: “We can now run an ambitious off-site programme because we don’t think we will be back in theatre until the Autumn.”

The Arts Council said that in the coming weeks, it would award an additional €10.7 million to arts organisations through its Arts Grant Funding programme and €2 million in smaller festivals in almost every county from its Festivals Investment Scheme.

Cllr Antóin Watters: Narrow Water Bridge Update ‘Positive and Enthusiastic’

Sinn Féin Councillor and joint Chair of the cross-border Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Antóin Watters has welcomed today’s update and committments from the North’s Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon, on the Narrow Water Bridge project as ‘positive and enthusiastic’.

Cllr Watters said “The Narrow Water Bridge project has been stopping and starting for years and was included in the New Decade, New Approach Deal which saw the institutions in the north restored at Stormont. It is now a year on from the signing of that Deal and although the project was way-laid by Brexit and then Covid, I am pleased that we have commitments from Minister Mallon that this is a priority on her work plan and I feel progress is being made.

“This is a vital piece of infrastructure that will benefit the North Louth/South Down areas and not only will it boost tourism but it will also boost the connectivity between Louth and

“Concerns had been raised in the past that the Narrow Water Bridge project was somehow competing with the Southern Relief Road project and we were in an ‘either / or’ situation but the Minister assured us today that was not the case.

“We in Sinn Féin have been calling for Minister Mallon to work with her counterpart in the South and to make this Bridge a priority and I am happy to report that she committed to that. Minister Mallon has been in contact with Eamon Ryan and was planning to speak with him directly again after the MOU meeting. According to the Minister, she and Eamon Ryan will be meeting around March/April on developing a road map on how it will move forward.”

Current design options under consideration, according to Cllr Watters, include road design, in addition to pedestrian and cy-

cling options, alongside low and high level and opening bridge designs to provide a comprehensive consideration of alternatives.

Cllr Watters said “Nichola Mallon will come back to the MOU in the Summer with a progress report. I would be looking for that progress to be quite significant by then.

“We have waited long enough. The time for talking is over. It’s time to get the project moving. We need to keep the momentum going and it is important that Minister Mallon keep her focus on this and for her Department to continue to drive it forward. We now want to see continued progress.”

The MOU is writing to the Executive at Stormont and the Office of An Taoiseach after today’s meeting to stress the importance of the project to the area and to let them know that the community has been waiting a long time to see its completion.

Overall, Cllr Watters described the update today as ‘positive and enthusiastic.’

17-year old Ryan O’Kane showed no signs of nerves as he made his debut for Dundalk FC in a friendly against Bohemians at Oriel Park last Friday. The hugely talented teen made headlines last month when he signed a three-year deal with the Lilywhites after impressing manager Filippo Giovagnoli when training with the first team.

The St Mary’s College student who lives just outside Haggardstown earned rave reviews for an assured debut for Dundalk and hopes are high that he can become the first local to break into the first team since Shane

Grimes who left the club in 2018. Ryan was pursued by new Dundalk FC Academy manager Stephen McDonnell who gave the youngster his debut as a fifteen-year old when he was head coach at Warrenpoint FC The former Bellurgan Utd player is a grandson of former Dundalk FC chairman Tony O’Kane who was understandably proud as punch last Friday when seeing his grandson make his debut for the Carrick Road outfit.

“The whole family is on a high since he made his debut to be honest. His Dad Barry, mam Joanne and the whole family just can’t be-

lieve how quickly everything has happened. When he signed his deal with the club he thought he would be training with the lads in the academy but he was asked to train with the first team squad a couple of weeks ago and Filippo was impressed with what he saw and told him that he would be training with his group for the season,” explained Tony.

“We were all very proud to see him make his debut and I thought he did very well. You sometimes see even established players come in and start slowly when playing for a new club but I thought Ryan did himself proud. He had a

brief spell at Cliftonville before he signed with Dundalk but to be honest it was a bit of an ordeal driving up there a couple of times every week.

He was always a small kid but over the last year or so he has really stretched and I’m sure he will get stronger each week now that he is playing with Dundalk. The kid absolutely adores playing football and has been obsessed with the game since he was about eight.

“It’s great to see a local lad training with the first team as unfortunately they have been few and far between over the last number of years. Probably only Shane Grimes and

Stephen McDonnell have had any sort of run in the team over the last ten years or so. Seeing Ryan get his chance will give young lads from around the town hope and aspirations and show them that it can be done. I started going to see Dundalk play in 1952 when I went to a game with my Dad and I have been a huge supporter ever since. I was chairman of the club during a very bleak time when we were on our knees but thankfully we are in a much better position now. We are all thrilled for Ryan and look forward to following his journey with the club,” stated Tony.

Carers need to be moved DkIT Launches new campaign promoting up vaccine priority list consent and preventing sexual violence THE Chairman of the Louth-East Meath Family Carers Support Group has spoken about the allocation of the Covid-19 vaccine.

William Mahony told The Dundalk Leader that he would like carers to be moved up the vaccination priority list.

“There are thousands of carers across the country caring for loved ones. If something happens to us, who will care for them?” he said.

Currently, the Covid-19 Vaccine Allocation Strategy sets out a provisional priority list of groups for vaccination.

Family carers have previously called to be classified as keyworkers as part of the vaccine allocation list.

“The vaccination priority list seems to be age-based but I think it should be based on the needs of the individual,” said William.

“In my own case, I’m looking after my wife, Mary. She had several strokes. I know of people taking care of children who are under enormous pressure with nobody to take over.

“This vaccination should rightly be given to frontline workers but carers should also be classed as frontline workers.”

He added: “It would make a huge

difference because it would take a bit of the pressure off. When I go out to the shops I don’t delay because I’m afraid of bringing the disease home.

“My wife is lovely but it’s hard. It took me a long time to accept that I needed help so now we have a carer who comes in the morning and evenings.

“It helps to break the day but not every carer has help. If I brought Covid-19 home I’d feel so guilty about giving it to my wife. That would be the worst for me.”

William continued: “It’s been the best part of a year since Mary has been able to go out. There’s not enough recognition from the Government for people in my position.”

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has announced details of a new institute-wide awareness campaign aimed at promoting a safe, respectful, and supportive work and study environment for all members of the DkIT community.

The campaign is targeted at both staff and students, and supports a recent directive by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Mr Simon Harris, TD to make the Framework for Consent in Higher Education Institutes a priority over the coming year.

As part of the initiative, DkIT will introduce a detailed programme of engagement, training and supports for staff and students that aims to inform and create meaningful discussion around the topics of consent and gender-based violence.

The institute has established a new Promoting Consent and & Preventing Sexual Violence (PCPSV) Steering Group which will oversee the development and implementation of the new programme.

This group comprises representatives from students and staff at various levels in addition to external experts from the Technological Higher Education Association (THEA), Rape Crisis North East and the Garda Inspectorate within the region.

Key priorities for the steering group include: Launching an awareness raising campaign for staff and students using video material from Smart Consent starting on March 1st; Ongoing communications campaign throughout the year to disseminate information and create discussion to staff and students; Developing of an institute-wide Sexual Misconduct Policy; Implementation of a new anonymous reporting tool to be implemented for staff and students to report any incidences of sexual harassment and violence and get access to relevant support.

Vice President for Academic Affairs & Registrar, Dr Sheila Flanagan said: “We are delighted to launch our new awareness campaign today promoting consent and

the prevention sexual violence within our campus community and we welcome the prioritisation of this issue by the Minister.

We firmly believe that education and support for people of all ages is vital if we are to make lasting change for society. We are confident that our institute-wide programme will create a safer, respectful and more supportive environment for DkIT students and staff alike and one that is free from sexual harassment and violence of any kind.

I would like to commend the new PCPSV Steering Group at DkIT for the excellent work that they have carried out to date and their continued commitment for driving lasting impact around this important issue across our campus and beyond.”

Major cross-border Brexit conference to take place online next week A major cross border conference, jointly hosted by Dundalk and Newry Chambers, will focus on sustaining and building cross border trade post Brexit.

With over 200 people already registered to attend, the online conference which will take place on Wednesday, 10th March and will include contributions from An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, TD and Finance Minister, Conor Murphy, MLA. Recognising the importance of the conference, it is supported by InterTradeIreland, Louth County Council, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Local Enterprise Office Louth, and

the M1 Corridor Project, Speaking at the launch of the conference, Sean Farrell, President Dundalk Chamber said: “Just over two months after the end of the transition period this cross-border conference will provide businesses with an update on the challenges, opportunities and support that is available. Department should make decision on Bridge Street application—McGahon

The Department of Housing and Local Government should provide clarity and announce their decision on Bridge Street and Linenhall Street as soon as possible according to Dundalk Senator, John McGahon.

Speaking in a debate on Urban Regeneration in the Seanad, Senator McGahon said “There needs to be a real ur-

gency within the Department to clarify and announce their decision in relation to Bridge Street and Linenhall Street and its application for Urban Regeneration Funding.

Louth County Council submitted further information on the project in April 2020 and we are almost eleven months on, and no decision has been

made. I accept that the Covid Pandemic will have slowed procedures down and made applications more difficult to progress, but this is an extremely important project for the north end of Dundalk, and we need to know what decision has been made.

It’s important that a decision is made and announced be-

cause if the worst case scenario happens, and the project is rejected, we need to be able to sit down, examine the application, see where we went wrong and ensure we submit a stronger application in the future.

“Yeah, I suppose if you play for your local club it becomes almost a way of life so when it is taken away from you it can be tough to adjust and fill in the time especially when you are in lockdown and there isn’t a whole lot to you.

At the Clans we have a great group of lads and we are coping as best we can and helping each other whenever somebody is feeling down or in need of a lift,” explains Paul.

“We would have trained two nights every week and then the weekend you would

play a game and it was just a great routine and a brilliant way to keep both your body and mind fit and healthy.

We have a very active whatsapp group and we would call each other as well but there is no substitute to talking to somebody face to face.

was at training I could get a few things off my chest with some of the lads and talk about stuff that maybe you can’t speak about at home.

We all miss the craic and camaraderie but we are still working hard and we are continuing to do our strength and conditioning at home via zoom sessions and on our own time.

O’Murchú compares parliamentary party meetings to sausage making

Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has compared parliamentary party meetings to making sausages during a debate in the Dáil last week over leaks to the media from TDs and Senators from government parties.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘The live-streaming of parliamentary party meetings is not a pretty sight.

‘A person said to me earlier that parliamentary party meetings are like the making of sausages - far from pretty and nobody should know what happens inside them.

‘It really is not helping people that they are getting multiple lines from multiple sources and they are not entirely sure which to believe.

People will only have confidence when they are given a plan, see that plan enacted and have absolute clarity from on top. We need that to happen.

‘A significant number of people have made great sacrifices. Those people expect the Parliament, the Government and the State to do their part.

‘This is about regaining the dressing room.

The only way the Government will do so is by showing people that it has their backs. Sinn Féin accepts that this is not New Zealand and that there is a significant number of essential workers who are necessary for the supply chain, but we need to fireproof as much as we can’.

Dunleer Bank of Ireland to close Bank of Ireland is announcing changes to branch services in Louth, with the closure of its Dunleer branch from September and a new partnership with An Post providing banking services locally.

The changes are in response to significant trends in how people are banking – Bank of Ireland is closing a number of branches nationwide and footfall at the closing branches is down on average by around 60% since 2017, while digital usage has increased by one third.

The new partnership with An Post means that Bank of Ireland customers can now avail of banking services at their local post office – Dunleer has a post office and there are 23 more in the county.

From September, the number of Bank of Ireland branches nationally will reduce by 88, the first significant change in numbers in almost a decade.

The branches closing are predominately self-service lo-

cations with no counter service. The Bank will continue to operate one of the most extensive branch networks in the country, with 169 branches.

This will be complemented by the new partnership with An Post, offering Bank of Ireland customers services at more than 900 locations across Ireland, including over the counter cash and cheque lodgements, withdrawals, and balance enquiries. To further support over-65s and carers the Bank has a dedicated support line on 1800 946 146 (open 9.30am to 4.30pm, Mon-Fri).

Gavin Kelly, CEO, Retail Ireland, Bank of Ireland said: “Although the trend has been to close branches, we have kept our branch network largely unchanged over the past decade. But we’ve now reached a tipping point between online and offline banking. Technology is evolving, and customers are using branches less, year on year. Between 2017 and 2020

footfall at the branches which are closing dropped by c60% on average. And even before COVID-19, branch footfall had reduced by almost a quarter over two years. Our mobile app is our busiest channel, c.430k customers log in each day, and traffic is up one third since 2018.

“That’s why we’ve announced changes today. We’re changing our branch network so it meets today’s demand, but we doing this in a way that protects local access to physical banking for those who want it through a new partnership with An Post. This ensures continuity of services locally for both personal and business customers.

“We know changes like this can cause concern for some customers. We’re not making these changes immediately – no branches will close in the next six months. That ensures that the An Post partnership is up and running before any branches close, and we will communicate fully with all

customers about every option available, in a nearby BOI branch, online or at a local post office.

“Bank of Ireland has been in business since 1783, and we have always adapted and evolved as our customer needs and preferences change. We are committed to Louth and these changes will allow us invest in our other branches in the county as well as digital services. We will also continue to work with community groups through initiatives such as Begin Together, a €4 million investment programme providing funding for community-focused initiatives across the island of Ireland.”

Last year Bank of Ireland launched a new mobile app with 50% more functionality, and Apple and Google Pay. Customers can open a current account online in six minutes and can complete the mortgage process entirely online from application to receiving the funds.

Peter Fitzpatrick hits out at banks Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has hit out at banks who are refusing to honour loans for house mortgages to employees whose employers had availed of the Government’s temporary wage scheme. Fitzpatrick called the practice ‘morally wrong’ and pleaded with the government to intervene in the matter.

“As the Tánaiste knows, the taxpayers paid and continue to pay a heavy price for the help the banks received during the financial crisis. For banks to behave in this manner now is disgraceful. I am working with many young people, including those with young families, who have done everything that has been asked of them to get a

mortgage. They have made and continue to make great sacrifices in order to get approved for a mortgage,” explained Deputy Fitzpatrick.

They have saved to ensure that they have the correct amount for a deposit, sourced a home and, in many cases, paid a holding deposit. They have given notice to their landlords and just when they are ready to complete their home purchases, the banks renege on their loan approval.

This is a serious situation and one that the Government needs to address.

To renege on a loan offer because a worker’s employer has availed of a Government scheme is not only morally wrong, but surely the banks are

breaching some code of practice by doing this.

I am pleading with the Government to intervene in this matter.

“Since the onset of this terrible pandemic, it has become clear that many workers must plan on working from their homes on a more permanent basis. Having spoken to many people who used to travel to Dublin and other areas for their jobs but who now work from home, it is clear that there are many challenges. One of the main challenges they face is that of a suitable workspace in their homes. In the initial periods of the lockdown, many of those who worked from home did so from their kitchen tables or living rooms.

While this was okay for a short time, it now poses many issues. In order to create a productive work environment, they need a proper workspace in their homes,” stated the Louth TD. In response the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar stated that banks had a responsibility to engage in prudent lending while adding that one of the reasons for the last economic crash was because banks lent a lot of money to people who could not afford to pay it back.

“We need to be frank and honest with people.

Banks have a responsibility to engage in prudent lending and they should only lend money to people or businesses where there is a reason-

able confidence that they will be able to pay it back. The Deputy talked about the banks being helped out in the past and the reason they had to be helped out or bailed out in the past was because they lent a lot of money to a lot of people and businesses that could not pay it back. It is not in anyone’s interest for us to have a repeat of that.

Because people have lost their jobs and because so many people have seen their incomes fall, the truth is that there are people who might have been able to service a loan a year ago who might not be able to now or in a year’s time. We need to be honest with people about these things,” stated the Tánaiste.

Councillor condemns racially motivated fight in Muirhevnamor LOUTH Sinn Féin Cllr Kevin Meenan has condemned the outbreak of violence between two youth groups in Dundalk.

A street-fight broke out in Muirhevnamor between a group of ten to 15 youths on Friday last at 5pm.

“It was very sad to see these lads fighting. I got a phone call from a member of the public who witnessed the start of the fight and they said it began over some racist remarks,” said Cllr Meenan.

“This has been simmering for around a year and a half.

There have been some tit for

tat incidents.

“There are a few people on both sides stoking this up but the fight on Friday was started when a group of lads were racially abused.”

Cllr Meenan added: “Witnesses reported that comments were made and then phone calls were made and more people showed up. If you include bystanders there were around 20-30 people present.

“We have a group that’s been set up for the past six months and a few of us are meeting today on Zoom to discuss this and see how we

can move forward.

“We want to try and keep people safe and stop them from getting criminal convictions. I’m only glad there were no weapons used.”

He continued: “We are trying to avoid this situation from escalating. We are trying to defuse some of it and we will intensify efforts to get something up and running.”

Cllr Meenan’s Sinn Fein colleague Ruairí O’Murchú TD echoed those comments calling the scenes witnessed on Friday evening in Muirhevnamor ‘disgraceful’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘What happened on Friday evening was disgraceful.

But it could have been much worse. There could have been serious injuries as everyone knows these things can get out of control really quickly.

‘We have called for young people to desist, immediately, from this type of behaviour.

Parents, and those with influence, have a huge role to play to ensure that young people are not involved in these types of incidents.

‘People need to understand that taking part in incidents like these can, and do, lead to

criminal charges which can compromise futures.

‘We have been in touch with a number of people since this happened and we will redouble our efforts to ensure that the circumstances which led to this incident do not arise again.

‘People have to remember that we are still in a very dangerous phase of the pandemic and should not be congregating in large groups.

‘And there is no room for violence, no room for racism or calling people out in our community at any time,’ concluded Deputy O’Murchú.

Further increases in women and children contacting domestic violence service Across the country, including County Louth at least 2,018 women and 550 children received support from a domestic violence service each month from September to December 2020, according to a new report called Tracking the Shadow Pandemic – Lockdown 2.

The report was launched by Safe Ireland, the national agency working with 39 frontline domestic violence member services, including Women’s Aid Dundalk.

November was the busiest month of the four-month period.

When Ireland was at the height of its second Level 5 lockdown, over 2,180 women and 602 children received support from a dedicated domestic violence service.

Locally, Women’s

Aid Dundalk, were contacted by 337 new women in the four month period.

Nationally, the report shows that over 2,445 new women and 486 new children contacted a domestic violence service for the very first time in these four months.

This equates to 611 new women and 122 new children every month, or 20 new women and 4 new children every day, who had, as far as is known, never contacted a service before.

The statistics for the latter part of 2020 were higher generally than those reported over the first six months of the pandemic. The first

Safe Ireland Tracking the Shadow Pandemic report, which covered the six month period between March and August 2020, showed that at least 1,970 women and 411 children received support each month.

Cara Murphy, Support Co-ordinator at Women’s Aid Dundalk, said that even in an extraordinary time of crisis, these numbers were shocking.

Adequate resources and creative solutions were needed to respond to the needs of women, but also the needs of the frontline emergency professionals like those working at Women’s Aid Dundalk, she said.

“Since last March, we have been working under enormous pressure to respond to those fleeing domestic abuse,” she said. “This work cannot stop. It can take no breaks. Our message to survivors remains clear and steadfast. You do not have to live in an oppressive home. You do not have to endure abuse and control. There is professional support available right here in your community.”

“However, it is also essential that our services are adequately resourced. At the moment, and as a legacy going back many years, there are significant disparities between those working in DSGBV and other social care settings.

Parity and respect must be afforded to domestic violence frontline workers,” stated Cara.

THE most popular baby names in Co Louth have been revealed by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Jack and Noah held joint first-place for 2020 for the most popular boy’s names in Co Louth. The previous year Jack was the most popular boy’s name in the county.

Ella and Emily were the two most popular girl’s names in 2020 whereas in 2019 Emily alone held the number spot.

In neighbouring Co

Meath, James was the most popular boy’s name last year, while it was Jack in 2019. The most popular girl’s name in Co Meath was Ava in 2020 and Emily in 2019.

In Co Cavan the most popular boy’s name was Jack in 2020 and Rian in 2019. The most popular girl’s name was held jointly by Emily and Grace in 2020 and Emily and Grace in 2019.

In Co Monaghan the most popular boy’s name was Jack in 2020 and James and Thomas in 2019. Ellie was the most

popular girl’s name in 2020 and it was Ella in 2019.

Nationwide, Jack maintains the top spot as most popular name for boys while Grace ousts Emily to take the top spot for baby girls’ names registered in 2020.

Commenting on the trends in Irish baby names, Carol Anne Hennessy, Statistician said: “Jack has retained the top spot as the most popular baby boys’ name in 2020, a position it has held since 2007 except for 2016, when James was the most

popular choice. Jack was followed by James, Noah, Daniel and Conor as the five most popular names for boys in 2020.

“Grace claims the top spot for girls for the first time, followed by Fiadh, Emily, Sophie and Ava. These were the top five names of choice by parents for their newly arrived baby girls in 2020.

Emily held top position for the girls for nine consecutive years (since 2011) until 2020 when it earned the bronze medal spot behind Grace and Fiadh.”

Fianna Fáil senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the publishing of a White Paper on ending Direct Provision.

The White Paper outlines the new system of accommodation and supports that will be put in place for applicants for International Protection. It is anticipated that all existing Direct Provision Centres will close by the end of 2024.

Senator McGreehan commented, “I very much welcome this and it has been a priority for this Government since it came into existence last June. The failure of the Direct Provision system has long been ignored by previous governments. I have called

for the end of the Direct Provision system for a long time. It is a cruel, inhumane way to treat people who come to this country for refuge.

“Direct Provision is a dysfunctional system, and the goal of 2024 is great, however I believe that there needs to be short term goals for those who are currently are in Direct Provision. They need some hope and care. The average length of stay in Direct Provision is 24 months, with some residents having spent up to 10 or 12 years living in these conditions.

This is completely unacceptable, the processing times for applications needs to be hurried up and resources and personnel should

be given to do this.”

The Louth Senator added: “The new system grounded in human rights creates a system of accommodation and supports for applicants for International Protection. Under this new system, people who are applying for protection will be helped to integrate into Ireland from day one, with health, housing, education, and employment supports at the core of the system. They will be provided with dignity, respect and humanity.

“I look forward to reading the White Paper in detail and learning more about this new process of International Protection,” concluded Senator McGreehan.

Pat looking to revive the ancient rural craft of hedge-laying Local farmer Pat McMahon is on a mission to revive the ancient craft of hedge laying to help protect wildlife and improve biodiversity around the country. The Hackballscross man is a former National Tidy Farmyard award winner and one of the few remaining practitioners who possesses the skill of hedge-laying. He believes the very existence of hedges are in grave danger due to the scourge of ivy which he says could kill all hedges within fifty years if nothing is done about it.

“We might not stop to think about them very often, but hedges have been a vital part of rural Ireland for centuries, acting as land boundaries and supporting a wealth of diverse wildlife such as bats and countless types of insects and birds,” explained Pat. “There are around 550kms of hedgerows across Ireland with many creatures depending on them for shelter.

The technique Pat uses can give a hedge another 70 to 80 years growth and the benefits according to Pat are many. He uses some for-

midable tools for the job including a buck-saw, a start and finishing hook, a slash hook, a Japanese blade and long handled 45 degree knife.

“When you lay a hedgerow the rejuvenation of the hedge from the base increases biodiversity as well as given a stock barrier on land.

Hedge laying season is in the dark months from September until February and the physically demanding nature of the work is one of the reasons why so few people continue to do it. I suppose not many people want to do hard work

anymore,” notes Pat. “I want to highlight the importance of hedgelaying before it is too late because if we don’t do something about it now it will be too late and our wildlife will suffer. I currently have a pair of barn owls happily ensconced with two owlets and I hope to see them nesting in the new hedgerow at my farm in the future. Endangered owls never venture more than a couple of metres from hedgerows.

Motor industry claims low risk, high value for re-opening

Brian Cooke, Director General of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has commented: “While new car sales were slightly up when compared to February last year, they are down 11% year to date and down 18% on 2019. Strong pre-orders at the end of last year along with the ability to offer a click and deliver service have helped the Industry, as has the reduced VAT rate during the first two months of the year, which has brought some March sales forward. Looking ahead to March, with most year-end pre-orders having been fulfilled, the increased VAT rate and with the absence of car hire, it is anticipated that the month ahead will be a challenging one for the Industry. From a health and safety perspective, the Industry has proven during the duration of the pandemic

In this context SIMI members are ready to open showrooms for business safely, but if this is not possible a move to click and collect would help the sector in the interim.”

New car registrations for February were up 5.30% (13,834) when compared to February 2020 (13,138). Registrations year to date are down 10.97% (38,986) on the same period last year (43,788).

(LCV) are up 51.30% (3,315) compared to February last year (2,191) and year to date are up 6.39% (8,339). HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) registrations are down 15.8% (224) in comparison to February 2020 (266).

Year to date HGV's are down 9.5% (563).

Used car imports for February (5,757) have seen a decrease of 7.04% on February 2020 (6,193). Year to date imports are down 1.84% (12,579) on 2020 (12,815).

New electric car registrations increased for the month of February with 813 registered compared to 390 on the same month last year. While so far this year 1,791 new electric cars were registered in comparison to 1,281 on the same period last year an increase of 39.81%. Both Hybrid and Plug in Hybrid continue to increase their market share.
