Halloween nightmare for marathon man Gary

It should have been the greatest day of his running career but a lack of communication regarding a little-known rule left a sour taste in Gary O’Hanlon’s mouth as he was denied the title of National Champion in Sunday’s Dublin marathon. 43-year-old Gary who hails from Kilkerley has been defying father time for a number of years now and has been improving his marathon personal best consistently. Gary finished the race in eleventh place in a new personal best time of 2:18:52 which was a minute better than his previous best. Having beaten all his rivals on the national scene Gary was under the impression that he was the first Irishman to cross the line and had therefore won the prestigious Irish National Championships. However, just minutes after he had crossed the line his joy turned to disbelief as he was informed by officials that Kenyan athlete Freddy Sittuk had actually claimed Continued on Page 2
