Blackrock cleaned up at the Supervalu Tidy Towns Awards with the picturesque village winning no less than four awards including the prestigious title of ‘Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town’. This was the first time in Blackrock’s history that they were given this award which led Blackrock Tidy Town’s chairman John Horan to declare that “after 26 years of hard work we’ve become an overnight success”.

Louth Village golfer Brendan Lawlor turns professional Brendan Lawlor has ability Golf Association enjoyed a stellar year Tour and his red-hot Louth Village golfer on the European Dis- form has earned him a professional contract Niall Horan’s (formerly of One Direction) Modest! Golf Management.

Brendan, a scratch golfer, was born with Ellis van-Creveld Syndrome, a rare bone growth disorder that leads to shorter limbs.

He has been making waves on the local golf circuit for a number of year’s but his star has shone even brighter since joining the EDGA tour.

The 22-year old is currently number three in the ‘Official World Rankings for Golfers with Disability (WR4GD)’ and this season won the German Disabled Open and GGOLF Knockout during the European Tour’s Belgian Knockout.

He also landed the inaugural EDGA Scottish Open in an event which was played over the same course as the

professionals during the Scottish Open in July.

He will also tee it up in Dubai in November at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

These achievements led to Modest! Golf offering Brendan a professional contract which he accepted after

talking it over with his family. According to Brendan he felt the time was right to make the move into the professional ranks.

“I’ve been thinking about it for a while and last week I finally put pen to paper with Modest! After a meeting with Mark and Niall from the company

I went home and had a think about it and decided that the time was right to give it a go. They contacted me about four months ago and they made me feel very welcome immediately which was great.

They’ve already secured sponsorship deals with the likes of Adidas and Allianz Insurance

so they’ve got really good contacts which can only help me in my professional journey,” explained Brendan.

“It’s an exciting time for EDGA golf as they plan to be funded by 2021 which means that there will be prize money on the tour. They are also tying in more and more with regular

“We have retained our Gold Medal today at the Super Valu National Tidy Towns awards.

We would like to thank all our fabulous hardworking volunteers, Tus, Bids, Dundalk tourist office, Dundalk Museum, Dundalk Chamber , Louth County Council and all the local businesses and Resident Associations and local councillors because without you we would not have our 12th Gold medal,” concluded the statement.

Climate change a grave threat to humanity Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams, along with party colleague Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú, last week attended the climate strike protest in Dundalk.

Gerry Adams said: “Sinn Féin fully supports the young people who are demanding that politicians do more to tackle climate change. The ‘Fridays for Future’ movement has put the issue of climate change at the top of the political agenda and the recent declaration of the Dáil to declare a climate emergency is a welcome initiative. However, the government needs to do more.

Four years ago 197 countries came together in Paris to map out an agreement to challenge climate change. A series of reports by international bodies over recent years have highlighted the grave

dangers facing humanity. According to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) the world has only 12 years to limit climate change before humanity faces extreme droughts, heat, floods, increased food insecurity and water supply, and increased poverty for hundreds of millions of citizens.

Any strategies to tackle climate change must be rooted in the principles of social justice and equality. Ireland and the EU need to significantly step up our climate change commitments and challenge the big polluters. Market solutions haven’t worked. Carbon taxes don’t work.”

Councillor Ó Murchú said: “The government’s Climate Action Plan lacks ambition and will not address the substantive issues

of pollution, over-consumption, or corporate responsibility.

Sinn Féin’s approach is clear; we want to see 80% of our energy produced by renewables by 2030.

This has to be done in a manner that protects lower income families and ensures that ordinary people do not carry an unjust share of the burden.

Sinn Féin calls for • Divestment from fossil fuels in all EU member states, similar to the Irish Fossil Fuel Divestment Act. • An EU wide ban on hydraulic fracturing (fracking), as well as the import of fracked gas.

• Full transposition of the habitats directive and meeting all biodiversity targets.

• Full implementation of the single use plastics directive.

For many people the St Gerard’s Novena is one of the great local traditions and once again thousands are expected to attend the event next week.

Huge crowds continue to travel from near and far for the Novena and this year will be no exception over nine days commencing on Tuesday October 8.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Called to be Saints; Living the Beatitudes, and it has an added significance in that it will be the first to be overseen by new rector, Fr Noel Kehoe, while it will also be an opportunity to showcase the extensive renovations that have been completed at the church.

The guest speakers are among the many reasons why people attend in such large numbers and this year, they include Anne Walsh from Canada, while Jane Mellet from Trocaire will also be addressing the congregation.

Another visitors from overseas is Fr Kevin O’Neill from the United States, while Fr Michael Kelleher and Fr Gerry Moloney will also attend the Novena.

The Blessing of the Babies is one of the highlights of the nineday Novena and this year it will be held on Sunday October 13 at 2.30pm. Meanwhile the Healing Mass with anointing of the sick will take place on Saturday October 12 at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

There will be a candlelit Mass every evening at 10.30pm, and 9pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Specsavers Dundalk raise awareness on World Deaf Day Opticians & Audiologists

HEARING loss affects one in six people in Ireland. Therefore, Specsavers Audiologists have challenged staff to go Deaf for a Day to raise awareness and encourage proactive hearing health on World Deaf Day (Monday, 30 September).

It’s not only your ability to listen to sound that suffers.

Hearing loss can affect every aspect of your life, especially the things that are most important to you such as relationships with friends, family and work colleagues. That’s exactly what Specsavers Dundalk PR manager, Sharon Fitzgerald, experienced when she took part in Deaf for a Day. Sharon was fitted with impressions causing partial deafness, where she attempted to continue with her day-to-day duties at work.

Speaking about her experience, Sharon, comments: ‘Initially when the impressions were inserted, I was overcome

with emotion. My mother suffers from hearing loss, so it was a shock to experience what her level of hearing is like. My confidence was knocked, and I felt so isolated and excluded from conversations with my work colleagues, all I could think was how my mother must feel.’

Sharon continues: ‘My outlook on people suffering with hearing loss has completely changed. As the day progressed, I felt more and more tired as I was concentrating so much on trying to hear what was being said around me. The experience made me feel so lucky to have good hearing and it’s really opened my eyes to the importance of regular hearing checks and prioritising my hearing health.’

Audiologist at Specsavers Dundalk, Paula Owens adds: ‘It is important for us to continue to raise awareness around good hearing health, not just

on key calendar dates such as World Deaf Day, but every day.

Hearing loss can be gradual, and many people may not notice that they are struggling.

It’s important to keep on top of it as so much suffering can be prevented.’

Specsavers Audiologists are delighted to be continuing the partnership with the National Hearing Implant and Viani Research Centre at Beaumont Hospital, as they look to encourage the Irish public to be aware of unusual hearing indicators. JJ und Willie 25/10 Race Night at Dundalk Stadium in aid of The Birches Local man Paul McArdle has been working hard organising a fundraiser in memory of his late brother Jim McArdle and friend Willie Clarke. Jim and Willie, both from Fatima, died from heart attacks with the former passing away in 1994 and the latter passing in 2009. The name of the fundraiser is ‘The JJ und Willie 25/10’ with the ‘und’ a nod to the fact that both men lived in Berlin for a number of years while the 25/10 signifies the fact that Jim died 25 years ago and Willie ten.

The two men were well known and well loved around town and given that this year marks a significant anniversary since both men died Jim’s brother Paul decided to mark the occasion with a special night in honour of their memory.

According to Paul he also wanted to raise some money for a local charity as part of the evening and after much thought he decided to give all proceeds raised to the Birches Alzheimers Day Care Centre in Dundalk.

“We’ve been having wee gatherings over the years for my brother Jim and good friend Willie Clarke and this year we decided to do something

a bit bigger given they died 25 and 10 years ago respectively. We decided to have a night at the dogs in Dundalk Stadium in memory of Jim and Willie on Saturday the 26th of October with the first race starting at 7:50. We are charging €10 for a ticket and all proceeds will go to the Birches Alzheimer Day Care Centre here in Dundalk.

“As well as trying to raise some money we also want to raise awareness for men’s health,” explained Paul. “Both Willie and Jim were relatively young men when they died and when men reach their 40’s it is a

very dangerous time for them if they’re not looking after themselves properly. It seems to be a male thing where we will be slow to go see a doctor when something doesn’t feel right inside and we need to get over that and look after ourselves better.

“Willie was only 45 and JJ 44 when they passed away which is far too early and possibly something that could have been avoided with early health checks.

Willie actually died over in Berlin ten years ago having lived there for a number of years. Four of us went over there including Willie and Jim

and while the rest of us came home Willie stayed there as he loved it so much. I’m looking forward to enjoying a good night out at the dogs in both Willie and Jim’s memory on the 26th October,” added Paul.

Paul is selling admission tickets, advertising space and getting races sponsored for the greyhound race night on Saturday 26th October with all profits going to his chosen local charity, The Birches.

Green Party questions flood defence schemes The Green Party is calling for an urgent re-evaluation of the current flood defence schemes announced by the OPW in 2018 in an effort to tackle the problem in Louth.

The call comes in light of the recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) outlining current and predicted trends for the world’s oceans and ice cover. The report states with certainty that sea-levels are rising and the rate at which they rise has increased in recent years. The report also states that extreme events will occur with increasing frequency and in some cases one-in-a-hundred year events could be expected annually.

“This report should be ringing alarm bells with the OPW and local authorities, not least our own” said Eoin Daly of the Green Party. “ “Dundalk and Blackrock have long been recognised as being at risk of flooding, but the current scheme will do little to help matters. The plans used one-in-twohundred year coastal events as the benchmark, which this report says will become much more frequent, while at the same time making no allowance for mean sea level rise,” he added.

The current flood defence scheme was developed by the OPW over a number of years and identified Dundalk and Blackrock; Carlingford and Greenore;

Drogheda; Baltray; and Ardee as five areas in Louth in need of flood defences. The five areas in County Louth are set to cost the taxpayer over €80 million from a €1billion budget nationally.

“My colleague Mark Dearey has highlighted before that possible sea-level rise was not included in the original plan. The analysis conducted by the OPW do mention potential scenarios of 50 cm and 1 m rises in sea-level, but this does not appear to have made it into the final plans. What this effectively means is that we are building flood defences we know to be inadequate for future conditions which will have to be corrected in the future at further cost,” concluded Eoin.

Fiona Dunne of Hospitality Skills Ireland spent a day in St Louis Secondary School last week with the LCA students in the school teaching them the skills required to serve in 5 Star hotels and restaurants.

Fiona who has worked in the industry for 30 years and hosted events for the Obamas, the Clintons and Westlife to name a few, worked with the girls on a la carte and table d’hote table settings for 5 Star hotels.

The students learned how to write up order dockets, fold napkins, serve drinks and carry numerous plates. It was a great hands-on

experience for the students and great fun.

This completed a key assignment for their Hotel, Catering and Tourism course and their teacher Yvonne Mc Dermott

explained how important it was.

“The hospitality industry is one of the sectors which has lots of opportunities for employment.

Basic skills needed in the

sector such as how to carry and clear plates, how to take orders for food and drink, how to set up tables for different occasions and the basic terminology used is part

of the training given to Silver Service staff everywhere.

“For our girls to receive that now is invaluable to them. This combined with our continuing relation-

ship with DkIT means the Leaving Cert Applied Classes girls are really well prepared should they choose to go into the hospitality business in the future,” added Yvonne.

Public meeting over work on final stretch of N53 Louth County Council will be hosting a public consultation around the route of the final section of the N53 in North Louth and local councillor, Tomas Sharkey, has encouraged members of the local

community to attend.

“The stretch of road from Rassan at the Armagh border to Hackballscross will finalise the N53 realignment project in Louth. Since 2013 I have been calling for the

Castleblayney Road to be made safer, bends removed, blind hollows addressed and surface upgraded,” he stated.

“This stretch will complete the job. Council officials have been busy

consulting residents and surveying the area. It’s coming close to agreeing a final route.

“I am encouraging the whole community to attend the Malachis clubrooms on Wednesday

from 4 to 8pm to see the emerging proposals and to discuss these with officials. I look forward to supporting the best option and to seeing this scheme through to completion,” added Cllr Sharkey.

Make Way Day campaign hits Dundalk streets

Councillors Maeve Yore and Erin McGreehan joined John Morgan and Community Policing Garda David Clegg to help raise awareness of obstacles that face people in wheelchairs and people who are visually impaired as part of the national Make Way Day 2019.

Make Way Day is an annual campaign from the Disability Federation of Ireland which took place in 20 counties including Louth this year. Its aim is to try and raise public awareness on the everyday obstacles people in wheelchairs and the visually impaired face such as bins on footpaths, parking on footpaths, putting advertising boards on footpaths, overgrown/overhanging hedges, branches/trees, illegal /abuse parking in disabled bays, bikes tied to lamp posts etc.

John Morgan who is in a wheelchair and an ‘Accessibility For All’ group member is pleased with the progress being made around Dundalk but stressed that there is still work to do to spread awareness.

“I have to say that the local authority and the gardaí have been very pro-active over the past twelve months and from our walkabout last week it was clear that things are definitely improving. Chief Supt. Christy Mangan told me that there had been 350 fines issued under ‘Operation Enable’ over the past year which is brilliant as it will make people think twice before illegally parking in disabled spaces.

“We had a Garda accompanying us on our walk around town

and he gave a few people warnings about parking illegally and obstructing footpaths so that kind of thing is of great assistance to disabled people who struggle to get around town.

“The problems I face in getting around town in my wheelchair are definitely lessening but there are still some major issues such as people leaving their bins in the middle of the footpath thus blocking wheelchair users and when these bins are full they can prove very hard to move.

“I also go to the Sports Centre every week and when I’m going home there is always cars parked with two wheels on the footpath which is a major problem for wheelchair users. We want to spread awareness about the issues we face and hopefully people will be more careful in future and think of people with disabilities when they are out and about,” urged John.

Speaking after the event Cllr Maeve Yore thanked Gda Clegg for going on the walkabout while also urging parents and businesses to be wary where they park and to stay away from disabled bays.

“I would like to thank Gda David Clegg who came on the walkabout with us and asked motorists to move on when parked or partially parked in disabled parking bays. We would also ask parents/ grandparents of school students not to abuse parking in disabled bays in schools that are so needed by children using wheelchairs.

Businesses need to be aware also where signs are put on pavements and the affect overgrown trees can have on a person in a wheelchair,” stressed Maeve.

Breathnach says answers needed from Irish Water on Tallanstown Water Supply

The Boil Water Notice in Tallanstown has been in place since July 30th Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has said Irish Water need to be open and honest with those served by the Tallanstown Water Supply, after Irish Water recently confirmed the Boil Water Notice in Tallanstown is still in place.

“Those served by the Tallanstown Public Water Supply have been under a Boil Water Notice for six weeks. It is a hugely frustrating and inconvenient situation for them to be put in.”

“There is absolutely no indication of when the Boil Water Notice will be lifted. Irish Water need to be open about exactly what the problem is and what work is being done to fix it. In the meantime, I have already suggested that water could be provided from the Cavan Hill and Ardee Water Treatment Plants and pumped to Tallanstown” “Irish Water need to update customers more regularly about the progress at Tallanstown. A solution is needed urgently so the people of MidLouth can use the water in their house freely and safely.”

Sheena’s story of hard work and drive Sheena Dullaghan is a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, drive and sacrifice.

The amateur Irish triathlete has completed the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Nice, France on September 7-8, with an impressive time of 6.13. Using this race to work on her pacing and nutrition, Sheena is better prepared for the upcoming 2019 Ironman World Championship on Kona, Hawaii, taking place this October.

And after funding herself throughout her 10-year triathlon career, Dundalk native Sheena has just landed a sponsorship deal with Hanley Energy that she says will make an “unbelievable difference” to her.

Having qualified for the World Championships thanks to her performance in Barcelona in May, this will be Sheena’s first time doing two full Ironman races in a year. She says the main reason for this is the high cost – of equipment, travel, phys-

iotherapy, race fees – but now her sponsorship with Hanley Energy is making it possible.

“I don’t buy shoes or clothes, I just buy Lycra and runners and bicycle gear,” she says. “I don’t go out, I don’t socialise.

My money goes into what I love to do. I’ve funded all my own races for the last 10 years.

“So, this help from Hanley is going to make an unbelievable difference to me. As an individual triathlete, it’s very difficult to get

support. I can’t thank Hanley Energy enough for what they are doing for me and for recognising me.”

Competing in the 4549 age group, Sheena puts her body through a gruelling training regime. 70.3 refers to the distance in miles of the event – a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run – and, as Sheena explains, attaining the standard for an elite event like the world

championships is an enormous task which requires putting in the miles, day after day.

“I think getting to the start line, that’s your achievement,” she says.

“It’s so difficult, because of all the sacrifices, the nutrition, managing the niggling injuries, everything you have to do to get to the starting line.

“You are training flat out and you get to the point where in training you are almost covering the full Ironman distances.”

Sheena is in the pool, on the bike and pounding the roads for up to 20 hours a week – and that’s on top of her day job as a spin instructor in her own business, Ventoux Cycling Studio outside Newry. She does at least two of her three disciplines every day - 16-17km a week over four sessions in the pool, she runs for about an hour on weekdays and up to three hours at weekends. Her bike rides can be up to sixhours long.

“You need a lot of determination. It’s just something in me… I enjoy the endurance of it,” she says.

“I love testing myself to see how far I can go, and to get stronger to be the best that I can.

It’s just a way of life for me, it always has been.

Some days are hard, it’s not always easy to get out of the bed at 5am to go training but I like getting it done and I just take it a day at a time,” she continued.

A member of the Setanta Triathlon Club in Dundalk, Sheena has a secret weapon in her personal life – her coach Peter Tomany is also her partner – but she admits family and friends often take a back seat to training.

“You do miss family stuff,” she says. “You are away a lot and you’re on the road a lot, you don’t see people as much and your social life suffers.

Over the years my family didn’t really get it but they are starting to understand now what is involved and sacrifices you have to make,’” she stated.

Dundalk athlete Kate O’Connor embarks on a new challenge this week with the 18-year-old starting a course at the University of Sheffield.

The St Gerard’s Athletic Club member is very excited to be working under renowned coach Toni Minichello who famously coached Jessica Ennis to a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Minichello was named UK coach of the year following that achievement and will look to help Kate take the next step as she continues to make waves in the heptathlon event. 2019 has been a stellar year thus far for the talented Dundalk athlete who made history in Sweden in July when she became the first Irish athlete to medal at an international heptathlon.

Kate was in inspired form during the European U20 Championships in Boras and came home with a silver medal following excellent performances over the two day competition.

As well as her achievements on the track Kate also successfully completed her Leaving Certificate and although she was originally destined to take up a scholarship in the University of Texas those plans changed and she will now be studying Sports Development with Coaching in Sheffield while also being coached by Toni with the aim of progressing even further in her athletics career.

According to her dad, Michael, there is still an outside chance that she will be going to the Olympic Games next summer.

“Kate started off her new course in Sheffield on Monday last and we are delighted that

she is relatively close to home and able to train under a coach as talented as Toni Minichello.

It’s a brilliant opportunity for Kate and she’s looking forward to the challenge. She’s not going to think a whole lot about athletics at the moment as she has to get used to being a student and looking after herself and settling in over there.

“At the beginning of next year she will probably compete in a couple of competitions over in England and there is an outside chance that she could be on the plane to Tokyo for the Olympics if she clocks some good times early on. As I said she’s excited about the challenge ahead and she was delighted that she got to go down to St Gerards Athletic Club a few days before she left to say goodbye to all her old teammates and coaches,” explained Michael.

Welcome for traffic calming in Kilsaran Sinn Fein Councillor Pearse McGeough has welcomed new traffic calming measures being introduced in the village of Kilsaran.

Cllr McGeough said: “Over the years there have been a number of fatal accidents on the road and I have been approached by a number of residents in the area concerned at the speed of some vehicles passing through.

“With there being a school

in the area, child safety was a worry for parents so these new traffic calming measures were designed around that.

“Work will begin in the next month and we will see four or five ramps or raised platforms on the R132 which is the main road in Kilsaran.

This will certainly slow vehicles down around the school and will be beneficial for the village in general.”

Jimmy Flynn has successfully defended his Masters 60 National Hill Climbing Championships. The event was held in County Kerry on the scenic Glounsharoon climb near Crag Cave, Castleisland. The climb is 1.3km in length with an average gradient of 10 per cent but featuring sections of over 20 per cent.

Jimmy held off second placed Tom Daly by 50 seconds to take the gold medal. Daly is from nearby Kilarney, so had had plenty of opportunities to try out the climb, with Jimmy having only seen it for the first time the day before. John Foote of North Tipperary Wheelers was back in third.

Sinn Fein councillor denies rumours he has resigned from the party Sinn Fein councillor Tomás Sharkey has denied reports that he has resigned from the party following rumours which began to circulate when his name and picture were removed from the Louth Sinn Fein website.

Cllr Sharkey who is also the principal of Colaiste Chu Chulainn stated that he in fact contacted the Sinn Fein party to ask them to remove both his name and picture from the website following a campaign against him in protests over Colaiste Lú school.

The campaign is related to the ongoing dispute between parents of children in Colaiste Lú and the LMETB over what they see as Colaiste Chu Chulainn’s refusal to honour their

Cllr Tomás Sharkey. promise to teach their children through Irish in the school. According to Cllr Sharkey he contacted the Sinn Fein office when he saw the image from the party’s website was being used in a derogatory campaign against him.

“As was stated in a report in ‘The Times’

over the weekend I have called for an investigation into a campaign against me where my image is being used. The reason why my picture or name are no longer on the Louth Sinn Fein website is because I contacted the party to ask them to remove both,” stated Cllr Sharkey.

The report in ‘The Times’ stated that Tomas’s image was circulated amongst Sinn Fein party members on a mock election poster bearing the slogan ‘Don’t do Arlene’s work, save Colaiste Lú’. When asked if he was reconsidering his position in the party Cllr Sharkey insisted that he hadn’t resigned from the party but refused to confirm that he would continue to be a Sinn Fein councillor

for the full length of his five-year term.

“I haven’t resigned from Sinn Fein. I was elected in May to serve Dundalk for five years and I fully intend to do so. We are very busy in local politics and we have an awful lot of things to sort out including getting a budget which is fair for the people in County Louth. The N53 upgrade is almost complete and I have plenty more projects I want to get done over the remainder of my term in office,” explained Tomás.

When pressed if he would still be a Sinn Finn councillor come the end of his current five year term as a councillor Cllr Sharkey once again stated ‘ I haven’t resigned as a Sinn Fein councillor’.

Coláiste Lú parents take protest to the Dail

The campaign to ensure children in Colaiste Lú are taught through Irish enters its fourth week as parents continue to protest against decisions made by the Louth Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB). Parents of pupils in the school plan to take their children out of school today (Wednesday October 2) and go to the Dáil where they hope to ask the Minister of Education Joe McHugh to help them in their plight.

A statement released by concerned parents outlined their current frustrations as well as their plans on trying to get their issues rectified.

“Now entering the fourth week of public protests about the degaeling of Coláiste Lú, Co. Louth’s only all Irish post-primary college, parents and pupils are going to the Dáil on Wednesday October 2 to appeal to Joe McHugh,

Minister of Education, to consider approving initiatives that could save Irish medium education in Co. Louth.

“Parents feel that following a meeting between a parents delegation, LMETB and school management on September 18, unilateral action that was taken without consultation or notification, by school management and/or the patron, (LMETB), has resulted in a further reduction in commitment to Irish medium education”.

“The parents have advised the Chairman of the school Board of Management and the Chairwoman of the Board of LMETB of this breakdown in confidence.

“These actions have led to a continued exodus of pupils. As of September 27, parents estimate that there are now only around 45 pupils enrolled. More

pupils are almost certain to follow. As previously reported, no enrolment applications are expected for next year.

“Parents are at their wits’ end as they believe the school and its prospects are now terminally damaged. We are planning to take our children out of school one more time on Wednesday October 2 in order to

bring them to the Dáil to publicise our plight.

We would like to ask the Minister if any of the reported initiatives being discussed by officials in the Dept. of Education to bring about a successful solution are feasible; that they are rapidly approved and implemented without delay,” concluded the statement.

Gerry Brennan was the winner of Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition with the four handicapper shooting a nett score of 39pts to pip the in-form Zak Alderdice (3) by one point.

Alderdice took Category One while Derek Teather (16) shot an excellent 37pts to take Category Two and Pat Daly (21) with 36pts won Category Three.

Eoin Purton (18) was best juvenile while Brennan’s 35pts gross was the day’s best gross score.

The final Golfer of the Year event, the Cochrane Cup, take place this Sunday with defending champion Clem Walshe in pole position to retain his title as Mr Consistency.

Stolen chalice recovered after 21 years

Gardaí in Ardee have recovered a very valuable stolen 17th Century Chalice that was taken during a burglary in Ardee town, 21 years ago in 1998. During the same year, the safe that the chalice was stolen from was located in Tallaght without the contents. The Chalice remained stolen until this week.

The Chalice was advertised to be auctioned in Dublin City during the week, and Gardaí in Ardee were alerted to the auction and the property was seized by Gardaí in Dublin. The recovered Chalice was taken back to Ardee where it was positively identified.

Gardaí continue to investigate all the circumstances of the burglary that occurred in 1998. Welcome for review of the Ardee Bypass Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach attended at the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and contributed to the discussion saying that he was pleased that both TII and Louth County Council have confirmed that they are going to review the current proposal to take into account the serious concerns that require further consideration.

“I attended to hear the contributions regarding the N52 Upgrade (Ardee Bypass). Deputy Fergus O’Dowd, who chairs this committee, was challenged by Deputy Catherine Murphy, committee member as to why discussion regarding a rural road in Louth was being brought before the Transport Committee.”

“I wanted to put on the record that while I do not wish to see any great delay in the commencement of the proposed N52 Upgrade

works, I fully support the concerns of the local community and reiterate that they are not against the bypass, just the proposed cul-de sacs which the current proposal would create.

“In discussions in Leinster House on this issue with Minister Shane Ross, he gave an assurance that he would seek a workable solution to this issue.

“I reiterated my assertion that it is never a good idea to divide a community and this proposal would cut off a large portion of Ardee’s hinterland in the Townspark Road and Mullanstown Road areas from accessing the town with ease.

“Some of the constituents in the townlands directly affected by the current proposal say that while they are from Ardee and currently view Ardee as their home town, that the town of Carrickmacross in Monaghan will be easier to

reach if the current proposal goes ahead.

“In Louth previously where there were instances of a proposed motorway cutting a community in half, e.g.

Kilkerley and Heynestown, a compromise was reached. I listened carefully to the contributions from Peter Walsh, Director of Infrastructure Programmes, TII and Joan Martin, CEO Louth County Council, and both assured the committee that the delay caused by the review of the proposal does not mean that the project will not proceed as fast as possible.

“Peter Walsh of TII said he was confident that any additional costs would bring additional benefits.

“Joan Martin also assured the meeting that Louth County Council and TII will continue to drive the scheme forward as soon as possible,” added Mr Breathnach.

Louth Rents are among the highest in State - Gerry Adams Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has warned that the Government’s strategy for tackling out of control rents is failing.

With a recent report revealing that Louth rents are among the highest in the State and data published by the Residential Tenancies Board and the ESRI the Louth TD stated this was clear evidence that rent pressure zones are not working.

“The report from the RSB and the ESRI

on rents provides the clearest evidence yet that the government’s rent pressure zones policy is not working and that rents in Louth continue to be among the highest in the state.

“Data released by the Residential Tenancies Board shows that rents have breached the rent pressure zone cap of 4% in 22 out of 26 counties. Very specifically Louth was one of seven counties where the “standardised average rent exceeds (or equals)

€1,000 per month, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wicklow, stated Mr Adams.

He pointed out that when you examine rents by Local Electoral Area (LEA) all five covering Louth have seen significant increases in the local standardised average rents when compared with the standard across the state.

“Claims by the Minister that the rate of inflation in rents is slowing rings hollow when set against the fact that renters are

still being hit with monthly rents well above the 4% cap.

“I believe that the government now needs to accept the logic and sense of Sinn Féin’s proposal that there should be a three-year emergency rent freeze, combined with a refundable tax credit for renters that would put the equivalent of one month’s rent back in their pockets. There also needs to be a major investment in affordable cost rental in Budget 2020,” he concluded.
