CONCERN OVER PAYPAL JOB CUTS

SINN Fein TD for Louth Ruairi Ó Murchú has expressed concern following an announcement from PayPal that they are to cut almost 12% of its Irish workforce. The job cuts include staff from the Business Support Department which is heavily populated by former Dundalk site employees who moved to remote working in 2023 when the PayPal office in Dundalk closed.

Fourteen years ago then Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the creation of 1,000 jobs over the next four years at PayPal’s new European Operations Centre in Dundalk. In 2022 PayPal announced they were cutting 307 jobs between their offices in Dub-

lin and Dundalk. Less than a year later PayPal announced they were cutting more jobs while also closing their offices in Dundalk.

Any remaining PayPal workers from Dundalk were asked to transition to remote working. Now those workers jobs are under threat with this latest announcement which will see PayPal offer redundancy packages during October. Ó Murchú provided the update on Monday evening after speaking to a PayPal spokesperson who said that it is proposed that a total of 164 positions would be redundant across its remote and Dublin sites, representing 11.9%. The company employs 1380 people on a full-time basis in Ireland.

PayPal have announced a total of 164 possible redundancies.

Continued From Page 2 News of possible redundancies in the fintech giant made its way into the public domain earlier this (Monday) morning when staff from the business support department received an invitation to an online meeting where they heard that 29 senior agents, three team leaders and one manager would be made redundant.

The spokesperson confirmed to Deputy Ó Murchú this evening that in addition to the loss of those initial positions, a further 131 redundancies across a range of departments would be sought, bringing the total to 164 possible redundancies.

It was stated that the

proposed cuts to jobs would take place at all levels of the company.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: “The PayPal spokesperson told me that as part of a strategy announced earlier this year, the company would seek to simplify their operations and position the firm for long term growth through the removal of duplication and clearer reporting lines”.

He said that while he received an assurance from the company that they are committed to Ireland in the long term, there remains ‘legitimate concerns’ about the turbulent few months endured by PayPal, along with the ‘constant worry of AI’ among the workforce.

Young people explore policing and community safety across the border

YOUNG people from County Louth and Northern Ireland recently took part in a unique cross-border learning experience, exploring policing, community safety and the impact of history on public perceptions of policing.

The event was supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Participants travelled by bus to policing locations on both sides of the border, including Crossmaglen, Newry, Omeath, and Dundalk. Throughout the journey, the group was encouraged to reflect on the role of policing, the importance of community safety and the different ways communities access support and services.

Rather than focusing solely on policing, the programme also highlighted the valuable role played by local communities, volunteers and community organisations in helping to create safe and inclusive places to live.

One of the most powerful aspects of the day was the honest and respectful discussions among the young people. They compared their experiences of policing North and South, reflected on how history continues to shape attitudes and considered what effective, community-focused policing should look like.

Participants observed clear differences in the atmosphere and accessibility of police stations on

EARLIER this week a note was dropped into our offices containing a poem which was published in a local newspaper around 1973/74. The poem is an ode to Hil St Bridge and was penned by somebody with the initials M.H. The author of the poem recalls memories of playing by the bridge when he was young.

In his later years after he emigrates he outlines his shock when hearing of plans to pull down the bridge and

appeals to the powers that be to save the old bridge. (50+ years later despite many rumours and calls to demolish it the bridge is still standing!).

THE Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was alerted and despatched to Cox’s Demesne on Sunday to deal with a suspicious device which was found in a residential area. A security cordon was put in place shortly before 11am with residents asked to leave the area.

Following an examination of the device by the EOD the scene was declared safe and residents were allowed to return to their homes around 4:30pm. Gardaí have asked anybody with any information to contact Dundalk Garda Station at 0429388400 or the Garda Confidential Hotline on 1800 666 111.

This is the second incident in recent weeks that residents have been asked to vacate their homes.

On the 21st August searches were conducted at a number of residential premises by members attached to Louth Cavan Monaghan Crime Functional Area with assistance from the Regional Armed Support Unit, the Special Detective Unit and the Army EOD Unit.

A number of items were seized during this operation including firearms and viable improvised explosive devices. These items were sent for further technical examination. A woman in her 30s was arrested in connection with the investigation and was charged.

Search for the Bell from the SS Falavee

On the 14th January 1942, the cargo ship SS Falavee got stranded about a mile off Cranfield Point at the entrance to Carlingford Lough. The ship was en route from Belfast to Newry with bagged flour and general cargo when the vessel got into trouble and sunk. Thankfully all of the crew got off safely but the 120 ton, 145ft ship sank to the bottom of the Lough.

About 50 years later during the early 90’s, Dundalk man Pat McArdle who was a member of the Drogheda Sub Aqua Club at the time (The Dundalk Sub Aqua Club had not been established back then) went on a dive off Greenore about a mile from the lighthouse and discovered the brass bell from the SS Falavee. Paul knew the significance of this find as traditionally the bell serves as the ultimate historical identifier and official signature for a sunken vessel.

Pat kept the bell in his house for the next twenty years before he moved it to a warehouse which he owned down the Coes Road. Unfortunately about ten years ago there was a break in at

the warehouse where a number of items were stolen, including the brass bell from the SS Falavee.

According to Pat, he is keen to find out the current whereabouts of the ship’s bell and is appealing to anybody with any information to come forward.

“I can still remember clearly the day I found the bell. I was in Drogheda Sub Aqua Club at the time, Dundalk didn’t have one back then, and we went for a dive off Greenore. This was about 35 years ago. I was with Paddy Agnew who would later go on to start up the Dundalk Sub Aqua Club and is still there today.

“I was first in the water and went down towards the wreckage of the ship where I could see the shape of a bell. I had a bit of a job getting it out as it was stuck and quite heavy but I did eventually get it out and I took it home and it stayed in my wardrobe at home for twenty years.

“About ten years ago I took it down to a warehouse I had at the time down the Coe’s Road

and I left it in there. I wish now that I hadn’t as shortly afterwards the warehouse was robbed and the bell was among a number of things that were stolen. It is a solid brass bell and I would love to get it back.

I want to donate it to the local museum as it is an important part of local history.

“I would guess that whoever stole it probably tried to sell it on to a scrap merchant to be melted down but I’m hoping that whoever it was given to would have recognised that it may have had some historical importance and refused to take it. I am appealing to anybody who may have been offered or come across a brass bell with Falavee written on it to come forward and contact me. Prime Minister’s remarks on Irish unity were ‘nonsense’ states Ó Murchú IT is not up to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to decide if an Irish unity referendum is ‘off the table’ when it is enshrined in international law in the Good Friday Agreement, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.

ers, including Mary Lou McDonald and caused controversy by stating in media interviews that a border poll was ‘off the table’.

“Pretending that it’s off the table is not a strategy.

Refusing to prepare will not stop change from coming. It is as reckless as what happened with Brexit.

“In a way it is not that surprising that a British Prime Minister made the ‘off the table’ remarks when Taoiseach Micheál Martin also seems to have

the same view and doesn’t want to plan for unity.

“While I always expect nothing from British Prime Ministers, I do expect more from the Taoiseach and the Irish government.

“Neither the ill-advised comments of Andy Burnham nor the Taoiseach’s reprehensible failure to plan for the possibility of Irish unity will hold back Ruairí Ó Murchú TD. the tide of change”.

IN THEIR ELEMENT An Táin Art Centre’s Community Company in Residence ‘Encore Productions’ are well known for their annual shows which have been gracing the town hall stage for the last 23 years. Perhaps less well known are their evenings of music and poetry.

Alongside Encore’s acting and performance group are another team of creatives who meet on Wednesdays in the workshop room at An Táin to explore the more reflective side of life.

The group engage in art, creative writing and movement workshops in a mindful, relaxing and thoughtful way – creating poems stories and images that explore memory, nature, family and friendship.

Over this past year they have been looking at ‘Elements’ – the smaller things that join together to make up the bigger things in life.

Through Qui –Gong movement workshops with Nessa Ryan and Painting and Printing workshops with Orla Barry from Bridge Street studios the group has explored ideas of air, water, fire and earth and the way in which these substances along with plants and animals might help us think about how we move and understand the world.

The group have also engaged in creative writing workshops led

by Sandy Sneddon and Grainne O’Hanlon to make poems and stories that are both funny and philosophical.

As ever these poems will be presented on the main stage at An Táin in an evening of readings, music and song. The works shall be read live on stage

by Karen Shields, Vini Casey, Calvin Magee and Caoimhe Gleeson alongside short films featuring Paudie Breen, Brenda Cunningham and beloved

Family carers in Louth €1.6 million worth of cannabis invited to have their say seized in Joint Agency Task ahead of Budget 2027 FAMILY carers across Louth are being encouraged to attend a local town hall meeting to share their experiences and make their voices heard ahead of Budget 2027.

Organised by Family Carers Ireland, the meeting takes place at the Fairways Hotel, Dublin Road, Dundalk, Co. Louth on Tuesday, 8th September at 11am. It forms part of a nationwide series of events giving family carers the opportunity to discuss the challenges they face and the support they need with their local TDs and senators.

With Budget 2027 approaching, family carers are calling for action on the issues that affect their daily lives, including financial pressures, limited access to respite and the impact of caring on their health and wellbeing. They will also discuss future care planning and supported decisionmaking, calling for a shift away from the current crisis-driven approach towards a more proactive, planned, coordinated and person-centred system that better supports families and the people they care for.

The meeting comes as Family Carers Ireland’s latest State of Caring report highlights the pressures facing people caring for loved ones at home.

Among those surveyed, 71% struggle

to make ends meet, 75% have never accessed respite and almost half experience severe loneliness.

Issues expected to be raised include the abolition of the Carer’s Allowance means test, an increase in weekly carer payments to €325, a higher Carer’s Support Grant and improved access to regular, appropriate respite.

Louise Cosgrove, Carer Support Manager for Louth, said: “Family carers across Louth are supporting loved ones through illness, disability, and additional needs, often with very little support themselves. Force operation in Dundalk

ON 26th of August, 2026, as part of a joint cross border intelligence led operation involving Revenue Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), and Organised Crime Unit, PSNI, a total of 119 kg’s of cannabis with an estimated value of €1,666,000 was seized and a male in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, in the Dundalk area of Co. Louth, following an interdiction of a vehicle.

This male remains detained for questioning at a garda station in Co. Louth.

Follow up searches were conducted in the Newtownabbey area of Northern Ireland and a further estimated 45kg’s of cannabis, ½ kg of cocaine (subject to analysis), 22 imitation firearms and approximately £25,000 cash were seized by the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Organised Crime Unit.

One male in his 30s was arrested and is being detained by the PSNI.

Gardaí said 119 kg of cannabis was seized in the Dundalk area of Co Louth.

Jury Duty in Ireland: Who Gets Called and What to Expect

By Darren Crawley FOR many people, receiving a letter summoning them for jury duty comes as a surprise.

While some may view it as an inconvenience, jury service is one of the most important civic responsibilities in Ireland’s justice system. Every year, ordinary members of the public play a crucial role in deciding the outcome of serious criminal and civil cases, helping to ensure that justice is delivered fairly and independently.

For those who have never served before, however, the process can seem unfamiliar.

Who can be called? Can you refuse? Do you still get paid?

And what actually happens when you arrive at court? Understanding how jury service works can help remove some of the uncertainty if that official envelope ever arrives through the letterbox.

Juries are a fundamental part of Ireland’s legal system.

In many serious criminal cases heard before the Circuit Criminal Court or Central Criminal Court, it is a jury—not the judge—that decides whether an accused person is guilty or not guilty. The judge’s role is to explain the law and oversee the

trial, while the jury considers the evidence presented before reaching a verdict.

Jurors are selected at random from the Register of Electors.

In other words, if you are registered to vote, there is a chance that you may be called for jury service. Selection is designed to ensure that juries reflect a broad cross-section of society rather than any particular profession, background or viewpoint.

Receiving a jury summons does not necessarily mean you will serve on a trial. Many people attend court only to discover they are not selected after the jury selection process.

Others may be excused for legal or practical reasons before a jury is finalised. Even so, anyone who receives a summons is generally required to attend unless officially excused.

Not everyone is eligible to serve. Certain people are disqualified or ineligible under Irish law, while others may apply to be excused because of exceptional personal circumstances. Serious illness, essential caring responsibilities or unavoidable work commitments may be considered, but simply not wanting to attend is unlikely to be sufficient.

Employers are generally expected to allow employees to attend jury service if summoned.

While there is no general legal obligation requiring employers to continue paying wages during jury service, many employers choose to do so. Anyone concerned about the financial implications should check their employer’s policy before attending court.

Many first-time jurors are surprised by how much waiting can be involved. After arriving at court, prospective jurors may spend time in a jury assembly area before being called into a courtroom. Trials do not always begin immediately, and some cases resolve before a jury is even selected.

If selected, jurors must listen carefully to all of the evidence

presented during the trial. They are expected to remain impartial throughout the proceedings and must decide the case solely on the evidence heard in court.

Jurors must not carry out their own research, search for information online or discuss the case with anyone outside the jury room while the trial is ongoing.

Confidentiality is one of the cornerstones of jury service.

Deliberations within the jury room are private, and jurors are prohibited from revealing what was discussed during those deliberations after the trial has concluded. This confidentiality protects the integrity and independence of the decisionmaking process.

From a local perspective, jury service is something many

people in Dundalk and across County Louth will experience at some stage in their lives. Depending on the type of case, jurors from the area may be called to attend court in Dundalk or, for more serious matters, other courts within the region.

While receiving a summons may initially seem disruptive, it represents an important opportunity to participate directly in the administration of justice.

Serving on a jury also provides many people with their first real insight into how Ireland’s courts operate. The experience often challenges assumptions formed through television dramas and media coverage, highlighting the careful procedures, legal safeguards and responsibilities involved in ensuring that every person receives a fair trial.

Failing to attend jury service without a valid excuse can itself have consequences. Because jury service is a legal obligation rather than a voluntary activity, ignoring a summons without being officially excused may result in penalties. Anyone who believes they cannot attend should contact the relevant court as soon as possible rather than simply failing to appear.

Although jury service can in-

volve time away from work and everyday routines, most people only receive a summons once or twice, if at all, during their lifetime. It is a temporary commitment that helps uphold one of the fundamental principles of Ireland’s justice system—that serious cases should be decided not by the State alone, but by ordinary citizens drawn from the community.

As Dundalk continues to play its part within Ireland’s legal system, jury service remains an important reminder that justice depends not only on judges, barristers and Gardaí, but also on the willingness of ordinary people to fulfil their civic responsibilities when called upon.

Ultimately, while receiving a jury summons may not be anyone’s idea of an exciting day, it represents an important opportunity to contribute to the fair administration of justice.

By understanding what is involved and approaching the process with an open mind, those called for jury service can play a vital role in ensuring that Ireland’s courts continue to operate fairly, independently and with the confidence of the public.

LOUTH ARTS OFFICER, MOYA HODGERS

By Paul Byrne EVERY county and city in Ireland has an Arts Officer supporting cultural life across the country. Without them there would be less festivals, no support for local artists and no opportunities They work to ensure that festivals happen, that artists are supported, and less opportunities for the local community to experience or take part in the arts.

It’s a role that mixes creativity with practical problemsolving, long-term planning with day-to-day support. Moya Hodgers is the Arts Officer for Co. Louth and recently she sat down with the Dundalk Leader to give an insight into what the job entails.

“I’m Dundalk born and bred,” states Moya. “I grew up on the Dublin Road. I first became involved in Arts through my mother, Marie Hearty, who set up a variety group in Glenmuir Youth Club for kids like myself who weren’t into sport and had nothing else to do in the winter evenings. That was my first introduction to stage.

I think I first stepped on the Town Hall, now known as An Táin Arts Centre, when I was six years old.

My mother loved music, she was a singer and used to play in the showbands. Her brother Jimmy Faulkner, was a trumpet player and he used to conduct Dundalk Brass Band. So music was always there as part of our lives. Unfortunately I was never blessed with training or learning a musical instrument, never had a talent for it but I always loved performing and that was through Mam. She was also involved in the Dundalk Musical Society and would have been involved with shows with them as well when I was growing up as was my sister Terese who now runs SONG (Stage One New Musical Group). She set up SONG and I’ve been involved with them since so I suppose the Town Hall has been my second home for most of my life.

When I wanted to progress my career then I did my degree in Media Studies and Theatre in Coleraine back in the 90s and I suppose at that stage Arts was really only starting to become a possible permanent and financially viable option.

But for various reasons I digressed and went into computers where the jobs were at the time. I did a course there

and worked in I.T for a number of years and then worked in the Banking Industry for a while. I was a kind of Jack of all trades and master of none laughs Moya. “about ten years ago I joined Louth County Council in a general admin role but would have always kept my hand in with the arts locally. And then about five years ago the opportunity came up to step into the Arts Role initially on a temporary basis and now permanent thankfully. I’ve grabbed the opportunity with both hands when I was thrown in at the deep end in 2021 and I have to say the last five years have flown by,” states Moya.

Moya began in her new role as Arts Officer for County Louth in May 2021 just as the Covid restrictions were coming to an end. She says in some ways she walked into the job at a time when there was a very damaged Arts landscape which was trying to recover after a year of Covid restrictions.

ARTS DURING COVID “It was a bit of a double edged sword for me starting around that time. In one way it was great as a lot of funding came out from government at the time like the Local Live Performance Scheme. A lot of money was given to the Arts which was great but the issue we had was having the resources to spend it. We were very reliant on a lot of local partners like the Spirit Store and McHughs in Drogheda who were very happy to say yeah we are happy to do stuff and put on shows.

“We were trying to build the Arts scene back up and bring people back into venues and just get them back out in general to enjoy the Arts. People were nervous at the start to get back into their old routines and going out to shows and gigs.

“It took probably until 2024 I would say for audiences to recover fully in terms of numbers. The flip side of that is that without the Arts during Covid people would have suffered a lot more and I think it became more valued during that time.

People would have suffered a lot more at home. I think Arts diversified very well during Covid in the way we had a lot of stuff provided online.

“I know An Tain Arts Centre did a couple of pieces where they did stuff online. When you look at literature we had

We had to change the way we did things for that year and change things so that instead of people coming to us we would go to them. There has been a big shift in recent years to make arts accessible to everybody. It’s not just about bringing people into the venues but also to bring arts into our communities and that’s something what we continue to try and do be that bringing music into residential venues.

Some of the projects we fund with Creative Ireland such as the Red Door Project take place in their facilities. We want to make arts available to everyone.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ARTS? “I suppose the term Arts has expanded so much over the last number of years. When people hear the word arts they probably automatically think of painting or music but I’ve always looked at it in terms of art is in everything that we do and everything that we see.

The car that you drive had to be designed by somebody. The phones that you use and the apps on it were created by a person with a creative mind to put all that together. It’s expanded to everything not just the tangible like the music. It can be architecture, it can be

graphic design, it’s all of those things. From the Local Authorities point of view and from the Arts office point of view, what we do I suppose under the Arts Act of 2003, we are required to provide support and implementing the development of art in their local areas. So that’s the remit that we have in the Arts Office. That can be anything from community arts, bringing arts out into facilities and communities or supporting artists through residencies or bursaries.

“Arts is a huge remit what we have and really we are here to support it as best as we can whether that be financially or through information and advice. Collaboratively we do a lot of work with our library and community services. We have started working with the Louth Enterprise Office recently through the Creative Ireland Programme. We are running a project at the minute which provides training and mentoring for artists who work in the community arts in the county to help enhance their skills when they are working with community groups.

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMMES We support Artists in Residence Programmes with An Táin here in Dundalk and also there’s an Artist in Residence

Programme with Druid Arts Centre in Drogheda. We would provide financial support and we do that also with Creative Spark as well. This allows artists from anywhere in Ireland or anywhere in the world to work in that facility, they get access to studio space. As part of it they have to engage with local groups while they are here. It’s a really good way for us to bring artists of all calibre and different disciplines to the County.

“For An Táin Arts Centre or Druid Arts Centre the Artist work within those settings to develop a new piece of work maybe or to work on a new skill and that could end in a solo exhibition maybe with An Táin Arts Centre. It can be artists of any discipline be that writers, musicians, visual artists. We’ve had artists from the UK, Spain, Mexico from all over really. It’s great to get artists over here to show what Louth can offer and promote the county. For a wee county we certainly punch really high when it comes to the arts. When you drill down into it we have been historically a very artistic county and it’s great to be able to harness and support as much of that as we can.

THE CHALLENGES OF FINDING SPACE FOR ARTISTS “It’s a big challenge for every local authority. I am one of 31 local authority arts officers in the country and we would meet four or five times a year and every single arts officer is inundated with artists who can’t find space. We have done our best to try and support as many as we can. We are lucky we have Bó Studios through An Táin Arts Centre. In Drogheda we have 8 fold studios which we supported through the Creative Ireland programme when they were looking for space. But it certainly is something that we would have in our sights at some point in our future to try and source capital funding from somewhere where we can try and develop local authority led artist studios but availability of space is a major issue.

Would you recommend steering your children into a career in Arts? “ I am a mother of three and I probably would have been nervous a long time ago but I can’t be now because my eldest daughter Ellen has just graduated from the Lir Academy in Dublin in Stage Management

and Technical Productionso she is working around the clock now at the minute and is booked out for the next six months at least. She is trying to find time to get holidays. She is doing a lot of work in lighting, lighting technician and also in Production Management so I didn’t really have much of a choice in that,” laughs Moya.

“I suppose in comparison as to when I was graduating college in the 90’s the opportunities of working in the Arts nowadays are much greater now. We’ve been very blessed over the years to have seen the Arts lifted to a whole other level thanks to the contributions of the likes of Michael D Higgins and Catherine Martin who did a lot while in Government to support the Arts.

“In terms of the future of the Arts we are always reliant on Government funding and local funding and I think at the moment it is very positive and has been for most of the last twenty years. I wouldn’t have any reservations encouraging any young person seeking employment in the Arts sector.

I think the opportunities for young people now are so vast and I’m very envious of them in many ways but I think it’s fantastic. Going back to the example of my daughter when we were talking about potential career paths we knew there was a huge shortage of lighting technicians across the country and particularly women. The representation of females in the technical fields in theatre is low and there are great opportunities in this field especially for women.

SUPPORT FROM LOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL We are very lucky here in the Local Authority in Louth with regards to support. In my five years here I’ve had very supportive line managers, I’ve had very supportive Chief Executives, senior management and Councillors who all recognise the value and contribution that arts can make to the Local Authority. The future for us in the short to medium term future is bright thanks to that great support we receive.

Nationally I think in recent years we’ve been very lucky with the Government that we have had in terms of support of the Arts whether that be Creative Ireland or supports given through Covid. (Continued on next page)

Culture Night returns to Louth on Friday, September 18

By Paul Byrne LOUTH County Council is inviting people across the county to come together for a night of FREE cultural discovery, creativity and connection as Culture Night 2026 takes place on Friday, 18 September.

With more than 30 free events taking place in venues across County Louth, Culture Night offers an opportunity for people of all ages to experience the rich creativity, heritage and cultural life of the county. From music and storytelling to visual arts, local history, food and film, the programme showcases the diverse talent and cultural offerings that make Louth such a vibrant place to live, work and visit.

Louth’s Culture Night programme is coordinated by Louth County Council. This year, Louth County Council provided more than €40,000 in grant support to individuals, artists, groups, venues, and organisations across the county to deliver events as part of the national celebration. Funding was made available through the Culture Night Fund, supported by Louth County Council and the Arts Council of Ireland, and Cultúr 2026, the national cultural programme for Ireland’s EU Presidency.

Commenting on the programme, Cllr Dolores Minogue, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “Culture Night is an opportunity for people across the county

to enjoy free access to an incredible range of artistic, cultural and heritage experiences in their own communities. The Louth programme celebrates the creativity, talent, traditions, and innovations that make our county unique while bringing people together to connect, explore and be inspired. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to attend an event, support local artists and discover something new on this special night.”

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, added: “Culture Night demonstrates the important role that the arts play in building inclusive, connected and sustainable communities throughout the whole county. The Culture Night 2026 programme for Louth features more than 30 FREE events in traditional and unexpected venues across the county. This year will see the Friends of Collon Church host their first-ever Culture Night event, offering an evening of music, architecture, and fasci-

nating local stories in the newly renovated church.

John Rountree, Friends of Collon Church, said: “We are delighted to be hosting our first Culture Night event and to have the opportunity to welcome people into Collon Church.

The evening will celebrate not only the building’s remarkable history and architecture, but also the stories, music and community spirit that make it such a special place. We are looking forward to sharing this unique venue with visitors from across Louth and beyond.”

LOUTH ARTS OFFICER, MOYA HODGERS

AS I said earlier we are really punching above our weight with the amount of internationally recognised artists that we have. Not just those who we have celebrated recently like Liam Reilly and The Corrs but also the likes of Zoe Conway, John McIntyre, Nuala Kennedy, Gerry O’Connor and Donal O’Connor who are constantly touring at home and abroad and promoting Louth on the world stage. Equally when you look back historically, Tomás O’Kenna was from Dundalk.

He was a theatre director and playwright. The McKenna theatre up in DkIT is named after him. He spent most of his career working in the Abbey Theatre and he was nominated for a Tony award for his direction of The Borstal Boy which transferred to Broadway in the late 60s. We have Dorothy McArdle, a very recognised historian and writer who was from Dundalk. Her account and publica-

tions of the Irish Republic and her viewpoint on women’s treatment during the 30s. Peter Rice who designed the Sydney Opera House was from Dundalk. We have such a vast array of creatives who have come out of Louth and Dundalk. I think it’s important that we do recognise these people and keep their names alive. It’s also important to recognise the contribution of local people in Louth to arts in the community.

Anybody who runs local musical theatre groups or amateur dramatics groups have given so much to local arts and without them there would be no young people coming through and having an appreciation for the Arts.

AI’s recent influences in the Arts I am not an expert in AI. We were only actually discussing this in the office the other day. You can see AI generated images being used for certain posters and I know people

can be reliant on it now particularly people who maybe don’t have the expertise in putting a poster together.

It’s something that we have to look at. I think it’s our duty in the Arts office to try and protect the integrity of arts in general so if we see something like that we have to question it and we have done that once or twice. Without digital developments or technological developments the arts wouldn’t be what it is today and there is going to be huge advances in the coming years. We have to embrace some of that but with AI I think we have to approach with caution. I think it’s still very much in its infancy and the worry is it can be used for the wrong things. Technology in general is something that we have to be very mindful of when we are using it. I think with AI it’s still a no man’s land that we have to be very wary of. Certainly from our point of view we would certainly not be ad-

vocating the use of it unless it was absolutely necessary and even at that I don’t think there is a reason for it.

Culture Night in Louth When you look at Culture Night it started 21 or 22 years ago and the whole idea of that initiative was to open cultural venues and have people come into them free of charge to give them a taste of what’s going on locally. That is still the same but in recent years particularly post Covid it has grown into bringing culture into venues that are not necessarily seen as cultural or bringing culture to people where they want to see it.

We’ve supported events that have happened in Mo Chara and Toales pub in Dundalk. We’ve had live music in coffee shops and out in the streets or Market Square which we are very lucky to have as a resource.

I suppose it’s one of the evolutions of arts over the years. Where people have grown up thinking Arts is not

for me, it’s for people who go to arts centres or for people who go to theatre but that’s not the case now. Arts is for everyone. It’s about changing that interpretation of art that it’s only for a certain cohort. It’s there to be enjoyed by everybody and that’s the main thing we have to take from it.

Culture Night is about celebrating all forms of culture and all forms of arts and bringing it out to people.

Do you enjoy your job?

Yes, I do without doubt. Like every job there are days where you go what am I doing here but no it is great and I am blessed that I am doing something in an area that I’ve grown up to love in terms of the arts. Ive learned so much in the last five years in terms of public art and visual art and it’s an ever expanding remit which keeps it fresh. It’s important that we keep on supporting our local artists and ensure art continues to thrive in County Louth,” concluded Moya.

“A purpose and a place to go” New five-year Muirhevnamor gardens come back to life SUNFLOWERS were still standing above the allotments at Hoey’s Lane on a grey August day, on land that had been locked up and almost forgotten only a few years ago. Muirhevnamor Community Garden, which is on land owned by Louth County Council, now has individual plots, shared polytunnels, picnic benches and an orchard with more than 40 trees.

Some parts of the site are well established and others are still rough and waiting to be worked on, but a dedicated committee have big plans to make the site into a haven for the whole community.

The gardens had been there in one form or another since the 1990s, but interest eventually fell away with the site no longer promoted and the gates locked.

“It dwindled away,” Cllr Kevin Meenan (SF) said. “People weren’t taking allotments and they weren’t advertising it. It became nearly invisible at one point.”

Fires on the land during the time of Covi led to another effort to get the gardens back up and running and a new committee was put together around three years ago.

Bill Johnston originally came looking for an allotment and soon found himself involved in the project. Ask the others what his role is and the first answer is “Everything.”

He is a committee member and director but in practice, he is on the site most days, arranging materials, planning jobs and dealing with whatever needs to be done next. He is joined on the committee by Sorcha Laurence Naylor, Tony Jordan, Cllr Meenan, Cllr Sionnan McCann, Pam Hosford, Susanne Breen, Sorcha Casey and Christina McKee. Dundalk Men’s Shed, previously based in Seatown, is also part of the wider site, with the two groups working alongside each other and sharing equipment.

A standard allotment measures around five metres by ten metres and costs €50 a year, with a €25 administration fee in the first year.

The committee tries to keep a mix between people from Muirhevnamor, people from the wider Dundalk area and community groups.

“We’ve never had to advertise,” Cllr Meenan said. “It’s always been word of mouth. Somebody comes and says their friend would like to come in.”

Christina McKee joined the committee because of her interest in nutrition and growing food organically, but gardening was still new to her. She started out with four small beds and, for a long time, she didn’t know what to do

Within a few months, she was taking home potatoes, onions, green beans, lettuce and courgettes.

“I haven’t had to buy any vegetables in a month and a half, and it’s brilliant,” she said.

The allotment holders also have a WhatsApp group where they swap advice about soil, planting and even caterpillars. When somebody is going away, another person will usually offer to water their plot.

“There’s great camaraderie,” Christina said. “I come up here and I have brilliant craic with everybody.”

The garden has also given her somewhere to go during the day and people to meet. “My friend will text me and say, ‘I’ll be at the allotment for 10 o’clock,’” she said. “It’s like there’s a purpose and a place to go.”

There is plenty of company, but the site is peaceful too, with trees around the boundary sheltering it from much of the noise outside, even though it is in one of Dundalk’s most built-up areas.

“You can come, you can escape from wherever and just come in here and clear the head,” Cllr Meenan said.

The committee could fit more than 90 allotments on the land but it does not want to squeeze a plot into every available space.

“We could have got 90 sites in here, but then you’re cramming it,” Cllr Meenan said. “We need to give space to see what else comes along.

There could be something really important come along next year or two years that we’d like to incorporate.”

He said the group might stop around 75 or 80 plots, leaving the rest of the ground for wider community use.

Plans include an accessible path from the car park for wheelchair users and people with prams, along with benches, picnic tables, a well, a remembrance garden, a children’s corner and an outdoor yoga and Pi-

lates area, while a separate womenonly space is also being considered.

The committee has also secured funding from a climate action fund for two toilets and the restoration and enlargement of the old pond, and a local enhancement grant which helped them buy equipment over the last few years, while Cllr Meenan is in “regular contact with council officials” about grant applications. The project has also attracted strong backing from Louth County Council.

“The Chief Executive’s been up here. He loved it,” Cllr Meenan said, adding that the gardens fitted with the council’s wider plans for community green space and biodiversity.

The group is strongly focusing on biodiversity throughout the site with native trees and wildflowers planned, along with bat boxes and bird boxes, and the pond will provide another space for a variety of wildlife. The committee also wants to record the species already using the gardens and is involved in the Hare’s Corner initiative.

TD for Sinn Fein’s Ruairí Ó Murchú said anyone who had visited over time could see the pace of the change.

“This is a brilliant community facility. Anybody who has been down here over the period has seen a constant improvement,” he said.

“A huge amount of the allotments have come on and you’re seeing a constant flow from the community, schools, community organisations and individuals.”

He explained that the project was particularly positive given earlier problems involving fires and antisocial behaviour.

“It’s absolutely brilliant that this is in the middle of one of the most built-up areas in Dundalk,” he said.

“It’s where the community meets the environment. It’s just positive and healthy.”

The committee originally thought the wider work might be completed within a year or two but that has now been revised to between three and five years.

“We realised, hold on a second, we need to maybe give this three to five years to do it justice,” Cllr Meenan said.

He has been involved in community projects in Muirhevnamor for decades, including the boxing club and community centre, but said the gardens stood apart.

“This is the best project I’ve been involved in, by many miles,” he said.

Much of its success, he added, came down to the people involved and the support the committee had received from various generous businesses and sponsors, including local donor Stephen McDowell.

There will also be a remembrance garden included in honour of Stephen’s mother Philly as part of the plans.

“We are really indebted to Stephen for his help who has been hands on and he visits the site regularly.

“We’ve got really, really lucky with our committee, our support, our help, the location that we inherited, everything,” Cllr Meenan said. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself and say something’s going to go wrong here somewhere.”

“I did not envisage having the success, not a chance,” he said.

“That’s not down to me. That’s down to the committee, down to the luck we got and everything else.”

At the moment, the committee is welcoming schools to visit but it is not yet open to as the fully fledged community space in the committee’s vision. There is much more to be done over the years ahead but the long-term plan is to keep the allotments as working growing spaces while making the rest of the grounds somewhere people can walk, sit, bring children or take some time out. Christina has even visions for a dance floor and harvest festivals in the future.

“It’ll keep evolving as the years go on,” she says, while Cllr Meenan added, “This will be something for the community, to just come in here and chill out.”

plan launched for Louth libraries

A NEW five-year plan for Louth’s library service has been launched after almost 1,000 people had their say on its future.

The Louth County Council Library Service Development Programme 2026– 2030: Building for the Future was launched in Ardee Library on Thursday, 27th August. The strategic plan will guide the future development of library services in the county over the next five years, including more work around digital innovation, lifelong learning, inclusion, community engagement and the continued development of welcoming library spaces for everyone.

The plan was drawn up following a comprehensive consultation with members of the public, community groups, educators, councillors, library staff and other organisations and reflects the priorities and aspirations of the people of County Louth.

Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Cllr Dolores Minogue, spoke at the launch, saying libraries remained an important part of community life.

“Libraries are among the most valued public services in our communities. They provide opportunities for learning, personal development, social inclusion and cultural participation,” she said.

“This Programme demonstrates Louth County Council’s commitment to ensuring our library service remains innovative, accessible and responsive to the needs of our growing and diverse population.”

The programme builds on a “period of significant achievement” for the council’s library service which it said had seen the opening of the new Dunleer Library, together with the recognition of Louth as Ireland’s first Library Authority to receive Library of Sanctuary status. It also noted that more people have been using its libraries in recent years, while opening hours have also been extended.

“With a county-wide network comprising libraries in Drogheda, Dundalk, Ardee, Dunleer and Carlingford, together with the Schools Library Service and the forthcoming Library in the Community mobile service, Louth County Council Library Service continues to provide essential access to information, learning, culture and community engagement for people across the county,” the council stated.

LGBTQIA+Project launches Dundalk and Ardee projects across Louth and Newry, showcase their work to Mourne and Down District Pride of Place judges

OUTCOMERS LGBT+ Support Service is launching a new twoyear PEACEPLUS programme across County Louth and Newry, Mourne and Down District.

The PEACEPLUS LGBTQIA+ Capacity Building and Community Empowerment Programme will combine a community outreach project in rural and cross-border areas with a public sector awareness raising initiative providing professional LGBT+ training.

Over the next two years, participants across County Louth and Newry, Mourne and Down District will be supported to take part in activities through a cross-community, cross-border programme designed to increase awareness, understanding and respect for LGBT+ people.

Activities will include peer and social groups, coffee & craic sessions, talks and guest speakers,facilitated discussions exploring issues affecting local communities, and cross-border visits

designed to encourage shared learning and build connections.

LGBT+ Inclusion Training Professional LGBT+ inclusion training will also be available to people working in the public and voluntary sectors. The training will focus on increasing understanding of LGBT+ experiences and developing culturally sensitive and inclusive services, with the aim of helping organisations create safer and more welcoming services for LGBT+ people.

Outreach Facilitator Annie Blake said: “A big part of what we want to create is opportunities for LGBT+ people in rural areas to meet and take part in activities in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

We’ll be developing the programme with the people taking part, so I’m particularly looking forward to hearing what participants want from it and building activities around the communities we’re working with.”

The programme is now getting under way, with an official launch taking place on 16 September at 11 a.m. in Wellington Hall, Dundalk, followed by opportunities to participate over the coming months.

Community garden takes shape on Carrick Road WORK is under way to breathe new life into the green opposite McDermott’s Terrace on Dundalk’s Carrick Road.

Recently named the Carrick Road Community Garden, the space is getting a new path surface, concrete wall plinths, planters, native trees and a bench, along with a tidy-up and a fresh coat of paint.

Independent Cllr Ciarán Fisher said the work would make the green “a much more

attractive place to spend a moment”, as well as making the view down towards Hiney Park and the Furry Glen more inviting.

The green has “fallen into a bit of disrepair” in recent years, but Cllr Fisher recalled seeing a photograph from the 1990s showing residents from nearby gathered there.

“I think there is a satisfaction in seeing the work ongoing and it returning to its former glory,”

he said.

His hope now is to see “the locals visiting it, using it and having a bit of pride in it once more”.

“I really look forward to seeing it come together over the next couple of weeks,” Cllr Fisher added.

He also thanked Louth Local Development and Dundalk Tidy Towns for their “great work” on the project.

TWO Louth projects helping young people and older residents have showcased their work to judges from the IPB Pride of Place competition.

Welcomed by Louth County Council, judges visited Dundalk and Ardee on Thursday, 13th August, to meet the people behind Dundalk Youth Centre and the Ardee Garden Care and Repair Project, the two initiatives selected by Louth County Council to represent the county in this year’s competition.

Dundalk Youth Centre is competing in the Youth Initiative category, while the Ardee Garden Care and Repair Project has been entered in the Age Friendly Communities category.

The judging day began with presentations from both groups about their work and its impact on local people. These were followed by discussions and site visits, allowing the judges to gain a deeper understanding of the projects and the communities they support.

Pride of Place is an all-island initiative organised by Co-operation Ireland in partnership with IPB Insurance which celebrates communities and organisations for their civic pride, inclusivity and collaboration with local authorities.

“Pride of Place is about recognising the people, organisations and volunteers who make a lasting difference through their commitment, collaboration and community spirit,” said Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council Cllr Dolores Minogue.

She described the two Louth nominees as “excellent examples of how local initiatives can enhance quality of life, foster inclusion and strengthen communities for people of all ages”.

“Their achievements reflect the very best of County Louth, and we are proud to have them representing us in this year’s competition.”

Cathaoirleach of Ardee Municipal District, Cllr Jim Tenanty praised the work of Ardee Garden Care and Repair Project saying, “The Ardee Garden Care and Repair Project has become an essential support for many older people in our community, helping them to remain independent in their own homes.

“The commitment of the volunteers involved is exemplary,

and we are proud to see the scheme representing Louth in the Age Friendly Communities category.”

Leas Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District Cllr John Reilly said Dundalk Youth Centre offered young people support, opportunities and a safe environment in which they can thrive.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the judges and showcase the tremendous work being carried out by the centre,” he said.

Call for more green space before housing land is rezoned LANDOWNERS seeking to have large sites rezoned for housing should be asked what they are prepared to provide for the people who will eventually live there, a Dundalk councillor has said.

Cllr Shane McGuinness (FF) wants larger sites to include more land for pitches and community facilities and around 20% kept as green open space.

“Please put something in for the community,” he said.

“I’m not interested in zoning big blocks of land unless I see a landowner or developer saying, ‘We’re going to leave 20% of this land as green open space forevermore.’ ” His concern is that councillors have their clearest say while land is being considered for zoning, they vote on changes to the county development plan but do not ordinarily decide the individual planning applications that may follow.

“Once we zone it, we lose control over what really happens afterwards,” he said.

“As councillors, we can see like all members of the public that we simply have not enough space being left for one of the most important fundamental needs of our people. Open space, green space and community zoning.

“For far too long, we have and still are building far too many houses, and apartments and not allowing for the need to keep open, green space and community space available. We are not planning or thinking about our children, our elderly, our sick and off course people with disabilities,.”

He explained this happens when large land banks become zoned for residential units. Cllr McGuinness wants landowners to identify from the outset any areas they would make available for pitches or community

use and for that commitment to carry weight beyond the zoning debate, it would need to be reflected in the development plan or later secured through the planning process.

“We’re going from one County Development plan to another and lacking in fundamental, long-term planning and urban spread.

The National Planning framework and the national development plan are used as guidance by both the Architects/developers and in turn, the planning authority.

“We are left with massive housing units and a bare minimum 10% of green open space which is calculated by grass verges, small little green spaces and a green that generally has a hill on it where developers have stored unwanted soil to save money on removal costs. Then the residents are left with nowhere to properly play. I have examples of this all over the area.

“In some cases, the devastation of some estates where families there have still no green area prepared after 8 to 10 years of residential completion. And worse again, the infilling of existing green areas with more houses because developers can still maintain there 10% compliance but make more profits.

We have large blocks of apartments completed now adjacent to the Gateway hotel, on Hillstreet bridge, further planning applications down along the avenue road, along the Red Barns Road and in large parts of Haggardstown and Blackrock, and simply no areas or space which is sufficient for anyone to use for there down time and recreational needs.”

He highlighted examples of anti-social behaviour in areas adding that tenant liaison officers in councils are “overloaded”, as are the

“The data available on underage mental health is staggering,” he said.

“Yet, we are still building large scale developments, and all of this comes under the dreaded High-density design.

“What was wrong with the low-density mindset of the smart 3 and 4 bed semidetached houses we built in the 70,s and 80,s where we had lovely large green areas where we played sports till dark and we had the area and grass to play on. The evidence of these designs is everywhere in our town.

But all councillors, and legislators have an opportunity now to put this right.”

He also drew attention to the mandatory objective of a development plan, under section 10(2)(j) of the act, which he said “clearly states that a development plan shall include fundamental objectives for the preservation, improvement and extension to amenities and recreational amenities specifically.”

The call comes as Louth councillors consider proposed zoning changes under Variation No. 4 of the county development plan, which was prepared to bring Louth’s plans into line with revised national hous-

ing-growth requirements. It includes proposed changes to the amount of land available for housing, as well as alterations to zoning maps around the county.

It was open for public consultation from 26th June until 24th July and a report on the submissions received was given to councillors on 20th August and now the elected members will now decide whether to adopt it.

But for Cllr McGuinness, that decision should not come down to just how many homes a piece of land could accommodate. “We, as councillors, need to be better at getting landowners to put in submissions that think in some way about the community,” he said.

“You’ve got to be thinking about the community. You cannot just think about money.”

Open-space requirements for new housing exist already, most residential developments must provide public open space covering between 10% and 15% of the net site area. Where 10% is proposed, the Louth County Development Plan says it will only be acceptable if the space is high-quality, functional and contributes to a sense of place and developments of 50 homes or more must also include proposals for a dedicated children’s play area.

The plan recognises both landscaped green areas and more active spaces where people can play, walk or meet. Whichever form it takes, the space should be functional, conveniently located and easy to reach.

Cllr McGuinness said public open space provision is “a really important” in the development plan and requirements should be clearly set out in the development plan. He wants to see requirements or standards that are applied in the consideration of both the size and quality of public open spaces which should be provided as part of new residential developments looking for planning permission.

There should be a distinction made between public open space required to serve an individual development proposal and that required to serve the community as a whole, which should be zoned accordingly. We are seriously missing a beat here,” he said.

Cllr McGuinness believes more needs to be provided for people who do not take part in sport and although he welcomed new sports facilities in Dundalk, he said they would not meet everyone’s needs.

“There are a lot of people who might not be involved

in athletics or the GAA who are lost because they have nowhere to go,” he said.

He also believes the way new housing areas are designed can affect young people’s wellbeing when there is nowhere nearby for them to play or meet friends.

“You’ve got to be thinking about mental health,” he said.

“They’re on phones, but why wouldn’t they be on a phone? They’ve nowhere else to go.”

In Cllr McGuinness’ view, the facilities a new community will need should be planned alongside the housing, rather than provided years after people have moved in and pointed to green areas in some estates, such as Wadman Park in Dundalk, which he said can be the last parts of a housing development to be finished.

He believes the integration of new developments with a wide range of amenities, supporting community and social infrastructure is “critical for to planning for sustainable communities.”

He said a very important part of potential funding and delivery mechanisms for social and community infrastructure should be used from higher development contributions, and this money should be ringfenced for the local area in which these developments are built.

“This is another problem I have with these funds which are pooled together and used for other schemes in other areas, and in some cases, different towns,” he added.

“I think, as councillors, we have got to come up with a better idea and a better plan,” he said.

“I don’t trust the system now.

“Builders and developers can leave their green area until the very last part of a

project, while people have been living there for five or six years. For me, that’s not on.”

He said Louth’s TDs would have to become involved if the national rules were to change and he had also raised the issue of housing density with Minister for Housing James Browne during a visit to Drogheda.

“Every time a builder or developer goes to the council, all they want to talk about is high density,” he said.

“We must get away from that. We must allow people to build low-density housing.

“We need the TDs to stand up and be counted and try to get the National Planning Framework reviewed. We need to increase the amount of space for open areas and community facilities.”

Over the next 6 to 8 months, Louth County Councillors will be working with the Executives on a new 10-year plan for our county, he explained, adding he public will have an opportunity to make their submissions.

“This is such an important role we all have but just zoning big blocks of ground for high density residential development and then trusting and hoping through the National planning framework, the design and finished product allows for the most important part of these developments of open space and community space is becoming a dream and not a reality.

“If we want to see our town prosper and more importantly our people prosper, as politicians and planners, we have to be brave and make tough decisions on our 10 year plan for the betterment of all the people of our communities,” concluded Cllr McGuinness.

TUATH Housing is set to deliver 24 new Cost Rental homes in Dundalk, providing an important boost to the supply of affordable rental housing in the north-east.

The new homes form part of a wider programme that will see Tuath deliver almost 400 new Cost Rental homes across the country over the coming months. This Dundalk development will include two and three-bed duplexes, offering local households a long-term,

secure rental option at rates below the local market average.

Dundalk woman and three-time cancer survivor encourages community to get behind the newly revived Relay For Life Dundalk THREE-time cancer survivor and Dundalk local Patrina Taylor (70) is encouraging people across Louth to come along to Relay For Life at Dundalk Stadium, Dundalk, Co. Louth from 2pm on the 12th of September until 2pm on the 13th of September.

The community is being invited to come along to the 24-hour event which is in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

Relay For Life brings the local community together to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have been lost to cancer.

DkIT student Sarah hungry to learn about sports nutrition AS she prepares to begin her final year studying Nutrition and Health at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), Sarah Gonnelly reflects on a journey that has combined her passion for food, health and sport with a desire to help others.

“There is such a huge variety within the course. We look at sports nutrition, clinical nutrition and how the food industry works,” she says. “There’s always something new to learn.”

A keen footballer with the Dundalk Young Irelands GFC, and having prospered at both Biology and Home Economics in school, being able to explore Sports Nutrition also really appealed to her.

A career in midwifery was originally something Sarah contemplated, but after further research and discussion with a trusted teammate, she felt the softer side of her personality may not be suited to some of the more emotionally challenging aspects of the role. “I began to explore roles where I could help people, and combined with my other interests the area of nutrition seemed perfect because food is such a big part of all of our lives.”

Once she realised nutrition was the right path for her, Sarah considered studying Dietetics in Coleraine. However, at just 17, she decided to pursue a course closer to home. “I began looking at sports nutrition, but I didn’t want to isolate myself with just one thing. So, when the course

Both the flexibility of the course and the opportunity to explore different aspects of nutrition have reinforced Sarah’s belief that she made the right choice. From sports nutrition, to psychology to coaching people around their own nutrition, she is constantly kept on her toes. “Instead of focusing just on one element of nutrition such as dietetics or sports nutrition, I get to explore multiple areas, which will open up so many career options for me.”

The course opens the door to a wide range of careers, including nutrition, food science, product development, health promotion, community nutrition, education and research. For Sarah, a career as a dietitian feels like the best fit and she hopes to pursue a masters in dietetics after graduation.

One of her favourite areas so far has been sports and exercise metabolism, exploring VO2 Max, looking at how the body uses different nutrients, and how different foods are digested“it changed my whole perspective on nutrition, particularly as someone who plays football.”

As she had no previous experience with Chemistry, Sarah initially found the biochemistry module daunting. However, it quickly became one of her favourite subjects. “With a combination of the learning methods from our lecturer and some hard work and determination, I overcame my fear of biochemistry and I actually thrived in that module.”

Having once arrived on campus as a nervous first-year student, Sarah has grown in confidence both academically and personally. Through her studies and her roles as both a student ambassador and Chairperson of the Nutrition Society, she has developed the knowledge, communication skills and self-belief to pursue her goal of becoming a dietitian. As she prepares to enter her final year, she is excited about what lies ahead and confident that her journey in nutrition is only just beginning.

The revival of Relay For Life Dundalk is particularly meaningful as, in 2009, Dundalk became the first place in Ireland to host a Relay For Life. It will also be a special occasion for Patrina, as it’s the first time she will do the survivors’ lap alongside her daughter.

Commenting on what it means to do the survivors’ lap alongside her daughter, and her excitement about Relay for Life coming back to Dundalk, Patrina said: “This will be the first time that my daughter and I will walk the survivors’ lap together

– my daughter’s cancer diagnosis came about in the years since the last Relay For Life Dundalk.

“It’ll be great to walk around the track with other people who have survived cancer. It’s a great moment for people who have lived with or are currently living with cancer to come together.

“It reminds you that we’re not just numbers or statistics, we’re real people with our own experiences of cancer who have come together to support each other, to celebrate survivors and to remember those we’ve lost.

“It’s very meaningful, and it will be a fun day out for everyone. I’ve missed the buzz of Relay and the atmosphere of the community coming together. I’m delighted that it’s being brought back to Dundalk – where the first Relay For Life in Ireland was held.”
