Household rubbish and builder’s waste dumped at a laneway off the Doylesfort Road has sparked outrage in the community with calls to track and prosecute those responsible for the act.

Louth County Council (LCC) visited the site of the dumping of an estimated 30 tonnes of rubbish at the laneway off the Doylesfort Road in Dundalk last weekend.

The lane was closed off and it is being decided if outside contractors are needed to properly dispose of the household rubbish and builder’s waste.

Brendan reflects on dream week at the Belfry Louth Village man Brendan Lawlor believes it was a case of ‘Mission Accomplished’ after making his historic debut on the European Golf Tour last Thursday. The 22 year old who has a rare condition called Ellisvan Creveld syndrome which is characterised by a shorter stature and shorter limbs, became the first disabled golfer to appear on the European Tour when he competed at the ISPS Handa UK Championship at the Belfry.

Although he didn’t make the cut Brendan received huge exposure making headlines all over the world and receiving supportive messages from the likes of Greg Norman and Hollywood star Jamie

Dornan. According to Brendan his main aim was to shine some light on disability golfers and given the fact he did get so much exposure he believes he achieved what he set out to do.

“To be honest the score was secondary really. I really wanted to promote disability golf

and maybe even inspire guys with disabilities to show that they too can have success in the game and I have to say that given the exposure I received it was one of the best weeks ever for disability golf,” stated Brendan.

“It was such a surreal few days and I am absolutely exhausted after it but I had so much fun and really enjoyed playing with Richard McEvoy and Jeff Winthers who couldn’t have been nicer. They were very encouraging and treated me like their equal which was fantastic. I was nervous on the first hole but I absolutely ripped my drive down the middle and then when I got a birdie on the third hole I was thinking to my-

self this is going great!

It’s such a tough course though and I was hitting it maybe fifty yards shorter than the other guys so it was a bit of a struggle thereafter and I didn’t make the cut. But as I said scoring was not the important thing for me last week. I think disability golf has taken a big step forward and I am hopeful that a full tour will be announced at some stage in the future” stated Brendan.

good news last week for Brendan when it was announced that he was teaming up with golf giants Taylor Made who will supply all his equipment and golf balls going forward. Brendan was understandably delighted to link up with Taylor Made and spoke of his joy at teaming up with the company.

“I cannot thank TaylorMade enough for all they are doing to support all areas of the game including disabil-

ity golf. TaylorMade really are leading the way in promoting inclusivity in golf and I could not be prouder to be a part of that movement. They are treating me the same as they would Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy and that is just brilliant from my point of view,” stated Brendan.

Next up for the busy Louth Village man is the Northern Ireland Open on the Challenge Tour which starts this Thursday.

From Page 1 The illegal dumping took place on Friday evening at approximately 8:30pm. Gardai were quickly on the scene as the waste was in the process of being dumped by an articulated lorry.

As gardaí approached the vehicle a man, thought to be the driver of the vehicle, fled the scene across the fields.

The lorry was seized for technical examination and a garda investigation is currently underway into the incident.

According to a statement from Louth County Council they are currently assessing the situation to see if an outside contractor is needed to clear up the mess.

“Louth County Council (LCC) visited the site of the dumping of an estimated 30 tonnes of rubbish at a laneway off the Doylesfort Road in Dundalk last weekend.

understands that some of the waste may have originated at a renovation project in the Midlands and those who were working on the site may have believed they were dealing with a properly-licenced waste company.

However, insulation sheets, doors, bricks and concrete blocks, along with other material, were dumped in a local laneway.

Mr Ó Murchú praised the Gardai who were quickly on the scene and although the driver managed to escape, the truck was seized.

Mr Ó Murchú, who visited the scene, said: “Thanks to the timely response of Gardaí, detectives now have the lorry in their possession, which is a crucial piece of evidence.

Officers spent hours on the laneway on Saturday collecting further information from the rubbish and I understand they are confident of identifying the rogue waste contractor and the source of the material.

“From what I understand, some of the waste came from a renovation project in the Midlands and those who were carrying out the work may have believed they were dealing with a properly licenced waste contractor.

“We have been blighted by small and large scale dumping over the last few years in Louth and it flies in the face of those, such as the Tidy Towns, residents’ associations, Dundalk BIDS, and others, who work hard to improve Dundalk and the environment.”

BEEF FINISHER PAYMENT SCHEME The Beef Finisher Payment (BFP) scheme is open for applications.

This is a one-off, exchequer funded grant aid scheme under the Covid 19 State Aid Temporary Framework.

The scheme is open to all beef farmers who presented animals for slaughter in the period 1 February 2020 to 12 June 2020 inclusive and fulfil the requirements set out in the T&Cs. Applications must be made online via the Agfood.ie portal by the closing date of 9 September 2020.

€871,000 for capital works and equipment in DKIT—McGahon

Senator John McGahon.

Some €871,000 has been allocated for capital works and equipment in DKIT, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator John McGahon said the funding will allow institutions address small-scale capital investment and equipment needs based on their

own priorities, including health and safety works, infrastructure upgrades, ICT and equipment renewal, and energy-related upgrades.

Senator McGahon said: “This funding provided by my Fine Gael colleague, Minister for Further and Higher Ed-

ucation Simon Harris, represents a significant increase in the devolved capital grant for the higher education sector and the extension of the grant to universities for the first time in nearly a decade.

“DKIT play a hugely important role in the

fabric of our community here in Dundalk and the wider North East region.

“It is essential that DKIT can reinvest in their existing estate, renew and update their equipment, and can make capital investments to respond to developments in online and blended learning.

“Ongoing capital investment is essential to ensuring a high-quality academic environment and a positive campus experience for students and staff.

“This flexible funding complements other targeted capital investments in the sector that

will help expand availability of student places and transform campus infrastructure over the coming years.

“I was born in Samoa and then moved to Hawaii before settling in Long Beach California. I had a pretty tough upbringing and would have been in

gangs and stuff as a kid.

Luckily for me sports saved my life and I got involved with basketball and American Football and was helped along the way by some amazing volunteers. I met my wife Triona in California and she is from here so we decided to move to Dundalk in 2002 where we both started to work in Dundalk Sports Centre in Muirhevnamor.

“I noticed that there was a lot of kids hanging around outside the sports centre every Friday night with nothing much to do so I decided to try and start up a basketball team to try and get them active

and involved in a sport.

It took a lot of hard work but we started to grow and grow and now we have an amazing club with about 120 members and maybe twelve teams. Sport has given me so much in my life and this was my way of giving something back.

I have a real passion for coaching and seeing children improve and enjoy the game of basketball.

I’m just one of thousands of volunteers around the country and I have to say without the work of volunteers in clubs all over the country there would not be any sport.

“When I received the award last year I was so

honoured and it made me work even harder for the kids in our club. We have a great family atmosphere and have players coming from Navan, Monaghan and all sorts of places to play with us. If there is a club around this area who feel that one of their volunteers is worthy of nomination I would urge them to put that persons name forward,” urged Fu. Fu urges clubs to nominate volunteers for awards

The Federation of Irish Sport and EBS are calling on the Irish public to nominate a volunteer in their sport who they would like to see recognised at the 2020 Volunteers in Sport Awards, which will be held at Croke Park on Monday, November 16th, 2020.

Last year’s winner was Fu Faapito who was recognised for his hard work as a volunteer supporting basketball in Dundalk.

Fu is the head coach of Dundalk Ravens which he formed in 2007 and continues to run out of Dundalk Sports Centre. Fu gives all of his own time to coach and mentor kids

Part-time Course in DkIT Helped Thomas Rise to the Challenge Following his appointment to a new role as Control Systems Manager at Cargotec Ireland (formerly known as Moffett Engineering Ltd) Thomas Lennon, from Dundalk, decided it was the right time to take on a parttime course to boost his knowledge in the area of Electrical Engineering.

He selected the Level 6 Certificate programme in Applied Electrical Engineering offered via part-time studies at DkIT and funded by the Springboard+ scheme.

“I was appointed to lead a new Control System Department within Cargotec and I thought it was a good idea to go and learn a bit more about the electrical design. The Applied Electrical Engineering course really suited me and it was relevant to the area that I am working in at the minute.”

“It was a new department that we were starting up here to apply safety mechanisms onto the machines, among other features. It encompassed the old electrical department that was already established along with the new features that we were trying to develop.”

The new team was comprised of electricians and software programmers and as a manager, Thomas was keen to better understand more about their area of work and get to grips with their world.

“I was keen to enhance my ability to communicate with them on their level. We have some experts on the team in the area of programming and electrical engineering and I wanted to be able to relate better to them.”

Thomas is passionate about continuous learning and he tried courses in the past but found that those which solely involved independent study did not really work for him.

“I knew that the study

time course is definitely a commitment and you need to make some sacrifices. However in my view these sacrifices are definitely worth it. Having an additional qualification is always great to

support your on-the-job experience and I have no doubt that it will support me as I continue in my career.”

Thomas is a selfdescribed ‘practicallearner’ and so the hands-on nature of the course and its delivery also had great appeal for him. Other attractive elements included the location and evening delivery of the course.

“Another big advantage of this course for me, was the easy access to the lecturers. They were very approachable and you can always follow up with them and ask questions” Making the Commitment Upon successfully completing the course in January 2020 Thomas strongly encourages others considering part-time study to take up the challenge. Glory days to return for Redeemer A.C. Hundreds of youngsters are set to relive the glory days of athletics in the Redeemer area of Dundalk with the re-establishment of Redeemer Athletics Club.

It will be a club for athletes of all abilities and will provide training of the highest quality with all coaches involved fully qualified in line with national guidelines from Athletics Ireland.

Initially founded in 1972, Redeemer A.C enjoyed years of success on the track with many notable former athletes gracing the podium. Former Chairman, Donal Cotter remembers those days very fondly “Being a Cork man in Dundalk, trips to the Mardyke with a bus full of athletes were very memorable. In 1986, Redeemer A.C was named as 3rd most successful Juvenile Track and Field club in Ireland – a huge achievement for a small club from Dundalk. I’m honoured and

proud to have been asked to return as Honorary President of the newly reformed Redeemer A.C.” Chairman of Redeemer A.C., Anthony Woods was a member of Redeemer from the age of 7, He specialised in Javelin and despiteserving as Chairman of Dundalk St. Gerard’s, his heart was always with Redeemer. Having spoken with the local community he received very favourable responses and was encouraged to continue working to re-establish the club.

“There is a huge amount of talent in the Redeemer area and myself and the committee have been very encouraged with the response from the local community. This is a great opportunity for young people in the area to get involved in athletics and we hope that Redeemer A.C. will become the beacon for sport in the area that it was for me and so many others.”

Anthony has been in contact with Clan na Gael GFC with a view to using their extensive facilities for training and has already received a favourable response.

Redeemer A.C. will be a Juvenile & Senior Club and will cater for athletes of all abilities in running, jumping and throwing. The club have also teamed up with Redeemer Fitness Fit 4 Life. Redeemer A.C is now open for membership for athletes aged 8 upwards and anticipates that training will begin in November.

Marshes Shopping Centre receives safety charter

Marshes Shopping Centre has welcomed the news that it has received a charter verifying it is operating in line with government public health advice.

The charter came following the Centre’s recent success at a clean-

ing awards ceremony in London.

Marshes has been issued with the Fáilte Ireland Covid-19 Safety Charter, a governmentbacked initiative to increase visitor confidence.

It certifies that Marshes is operating in line with Government public health advice, with safe-

ty and cleaning protocols also in place.

The Covid-19 Safety Charter is designed to give comfort and reassurance to employers, employees and customers that businesses have re-opened safely.

“Fáilte Ireland issued sector specific guidelines for tourism and hospital-

ity businesses to guide how best to meet the government’s public health advice,” said Marshes Centre manager, Seán Farrell.

“By signing up to the Charter, Marshes and its employees have agreed to follow the recommended guidelines.

“These include all em-

ployees undertaking the requisite Covid-19 safety and hygiene control training.

The decision by some dentists to discontinue treatment for medical card holders is hitting the most vulnerable in society, according to TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, who says people in residential care are left with nowhere to go for dental treatment.

The Sinn Féin deputy is highlighting the situation where some people in residential settings in Louth were told at the start of August that their dental practices would no longer be providing ‘new’ care for medical card holders.

Dental practices have told these patients that treatment can be pursued

under Louth Community Care, but Mr Ó Murchú says he understands that they are not taking patients unless it is an emergency.

This has been confirmed by the HSE, following a representation by the Dundalk TD, who told him in a statement: ‘The HSE dental service is also facing major backlogs, as a result of service restrictions during the height of Covid 19, and reduced capacity currently, due to new work processes, enhanced infection prevention and control measures, and redeployment of some dental staff.

‘If any of the patients you are representing are experiencing pain, and have difficulty accessing treatment, the HSE dental service can arrange for them to be seen as an emergency’.

A number of dentists have withdrawn from the DTSS (Dental Treatment Services Scheme) which looks after medical card holders, because of funding allocated to the scheme.

This is coupled with the high Covid-19-related costs for dentists that they believe are not sufficiently covered by the Department of Health.

A number of dentists, including some in Dundalk, have told their medical card patients that they will no longer provide treatment for them, though treatment which is currently underway will be completed.

In a statement, the HSE said there are dentists who remain in the DTSS and are willing to treat medical card patients, but Mr Ó Murchú says he is aware that patients are finding it ‘extremely difficult’ to source another dentist locally.

Mr Ó Murchú said medical card holders, particularly those with dis-

abilities, are ‘facing the dreadful choice of having to either forgo treatment or face the burden of having to pay for dental treatment out of the €203 disability allowance they receive each week’.

He said: ‘The HSE statement acknowledges that there has been a withdrawal of dentists from the DTSS and it is the Department of Health’s intention to ‘revise’ the DTSS and ‘engage’ with the Irish Dental Association.

‘However, there seems to be little urgency about this and, in the meantime, medical card holders, including those with dis-

‘In the short term, the government needs to engaged with dentists and provide an interim solution so people are not left without care’.

Cllr Watters: Actions against boy racers goes on

Sinn Fein Councillor Antóin Watters says he is disappointed that a meeting arranged with Gardaí and the PSNI regarding the so called ‘boy racers’ had to be cancelled due to the updated guidelines on Covid announced by the government.

Cllr Watters said “we had a meeting arranged for Monday evening, 24th August but that has been put on hold for now.

It was in response to a large gathering of these ant-social elements at Carrickarnon a few weeks ago. My colleagues in the north, Liz Kimmons MLA

and Cllr Roisin Mulgrew and Ruairí Ó Murchú TD and I called for a cross-border solution and a joined up approach and in fairness, the Gardaí and the PSNI agree that this is the only way forward.”

New Dundalk FC era starts with win Body of missing man recovered off north Louth coast

New Dundalk manager Filippo Giovagnoli began his reign with a win as the Lilywhites beat Cobh 2-0 in the FAI Cup last Sunday. The game wasn’t one for the purists as both sides struggled early on with the bumpy St Coleman’s Park pitch in Cobh. However, an excellent early goal from Dane Massey settled the visitors nerves before David McMillan sealed victory late on with a penalty after Daniel Kelly was adjudged to have been fouled in the box.

Dundalk don’t play again until 11th September when they host Shelbourne in Oriel Park but they will also have one eye

on Europe following Monday’s Second Qualifying Round Europa League draw where they were drawn to plat Andorran champions Inter Club Escaldes away from home. As Andorra is not on Ireland’s Green List the game will not be played there and will instead take place elsewhere in Europe with Greece seemingly the frontrunner at the moment. The game will take place on Thursday September 17th.

Should Dundalk get past Inter they will play Moldovan side Sherriff Tiraspol in the third qualifying round on the 24th September.

The search for missing man Ramano Dicks has ended in tragedy after his body was recovered off the north Louth coast.

It was found just after midday by members of the Dundalk Sub Aqua unit as part of the search for Romano who had been missing from his home in Gyles’ Quay since Tuesday evening.

The body was recovered about 50 metres from the shoreline where the River Foot meets the sea at Mount Bagnal.

Gardaí, the Louth Civil Defence, Dundalk Sub Aqua Unit, the coastguard units from both Greenore and Clogherhead as well as local volunteers were all involved in the search which ended on Sunday afternoon.

Dundalk Sub Aqua club sent their thoughts and prayers to Ramano’s family after the search had concluded.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ramano’s family at this very difficult time. Sincere thanks to all the Dundalk

Sub Aqua volunteers, Coast Guard, Gardai & Civil Defence that have searched for the last few days,” concluded the statement.

Ramano Dicks, who is originally from South Africa, had been living in the area for 15 months with his wife Cariska and son Giovanni.

A GoFundMe page set up by friends of the family to help pay for the costs of the funeral quickly surpassed the target of €5000 and currently stands at over €6000.

Dear Editor, “Dundalk contains some good shops and many good or tolerable houses, yet it is far from having an attractive interior and is burdened and filthified as much as not a few second-rate Irish towns.”

This, as published in The Parliamentary Gazetteer published around eighteen forty-five, was not intended to be derogatory. It was a simple statement of fact that was echoed in more than one local newspaper in those times of a terrible famine in Ireland.

Compared to what it was like for most of the 20th century Dundalk is almost litter free but in comparison to the almost pristine Blackrock the expression Chalk and Cheese comes to mind.

Admittedly the centre of town looks far better than it has done for quite a few years with most of the ugly eyesores getting a much needed makeover but in other areas of town time seems to have stood still.

In spite of a figure in the region of six million euro being spent on what essentially seems to be little more than new paving stones and underground piping, reportedly there was not enough money to continue the work into Bridge Street which, in spite of having many good houses and shops , behind the painted smile of the magnificent mural of Brigid, Goddess /Saint is still very much burdened and filthified.

New medical facility at the Fairways Centre Plans have been drawn up to convert two units at The Fairways Centre on the Dublin Road into a medical/ health service facility. Won-

derglade Unlimited Company has made a planning application to Louth County Council seeking permission to change the use of and

conversion retail units five and six to a single unit for provision of medical/health services.

The proposed develop-

ment will also include internal alterations and all associated site development works.

A decision on the matter is due by October 12.

Fire fighters attended a caravan fire in Dundalk on Saturday, August 22.

Gardaí have confirmed the caravan was unoccupied.

They were called to the scene at the rear of a premises on the Newry road around 9.30pm and stayed there for over an hour.

According to gardaí the caravan was burnt out, however there were no occupants at the time of the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Investigations are ongoing.

Dundalk Lions’ Club Dundalk Lions Club have produced a card which contains a list of helpline numbers for those in trouble or feeling alone.

The card includes numbers for the Samaritans, SOSAD, Women’s Aid and the Rape Crisis Centre as well as many more. It has been distributed to all pharmacists in Dundalk and the surrounding areas and it is hoped they will be supplied to all schools in the near future.

Cross Cooley Challenge change format of this year’s fundraiser Organisers of the Cross Cooley Challenge have had to think outside of the box for this year’s event giving the restrictions put on them by recent Covid guidelines. The Cross Cooley Challenge seen over €200,000 raised for local charities over the past seven years and although there will not be a walk across the Cooley’s this year organisers have asked walkers to do a walk in their own time to raise funds for the event. Seamus Gormley, one of the organisers of the event, explained how this year’s format will work.

walk format and we are now introducing “OUR WALK, YOUR WAY”.

DUNDALK GOLF CLUB NOTES A PURPLE patch midway through his round provided the platform for Noel Crowe (19) to claim the Members Prize during the annual Past Captains’ and Members Prize which attracted an entry of 236 players.

He got off to a good start with six two point bogies equally divided either side of a four point par at the index one fourth.

That left him on 16pts after seven holes and six holes later, as he walked to the 14th tee, he was on 34pts after shooting a breath-taking six successive three-point pars from the eighth to the 13th.

That 18pt haul meant he could even afford a blank at the par four 15th as he picked up two points at the 14th, 16th and 18th and three points for another par at the 17th to finish on 43pts.

It was enough to take the Overall Prize with Andrew Brodigan (12), who shot 42pts, having to settle for second place while Cormac Malone (18) claimed third on countback thanks to a fine back nine of 23pts.

Walker Cup star Caolan Rafferty (+5) warmed up for the forthcoming Dundalk

Scratch Cup by shooting 39pts to take the gross prize while Fionn Cunningham (18) with 37pts was the Juvenile Prize winner. Anthony O’Donoghue (12), Conall Mullins (13) and Gerry Campbell (25) were the category winners.

BRENDAN Keane (12) with a score of 40pts won the Past Captains’ prize with Peter Rogers (3) claiming second after a round of 37pts.

STORM Francis put paid to the Ladies competition scheduled for Tuesday and it will now be rearranged. The Saturday competition was an 18 Hole Singles Stroke and saw Ellen McEneaney (11) post an excellent nett score of 72 to win by three from the in-form Bernie McCabe (17).

Kelly urges Council to fast-track School Safety Wardens replacements as schools re-open Cllr Seán Kelly has written to the Director of Services Louth County Council, Catherine Duff, asking her to expedite all processes to fill 7 vacant positions around Dundalk. At present there are 13 wardens serving schools around Dundalk but due to recent government guidelines those over 70 are being asked to restrict their movements meaning we have lost 7 positions.

Having discussed this matter

with the County Council, Cllr Kelly has been given a reassurance that a recruitment process is under way to fill these positions in the coming weeks and schools in the meantime have been offered financial resources by the Council to provide temporary cover. Kelly has also asked the Community Garda section in Dundalk to assist with this process if possible.
