Budding athletes need modern running track

Calls have been made to construct a modern running track in Dundalk to help build on the success of the talented young athletes that have come to prominence over the past few weeks.

One of the town’s leading coaches has claimed that the progress of athletes is being restricted by the lack of facilities, while a local county councillor has stated that the issue must now be addressed.

July was a month that will live long in the memory for everybody associated with St Gerard’s Athletic club. Current members Kate O’Connor and Patience Jumbo-Gula both claimed bronze medals on the European stage while former member Gina Akpe Moses claimed a memorable gold at the European U20 championships in Italy.

Fuel and cigarettes seized in separate operations by Revenue

On Friday evening Revenue Officers executed a search warrant at a premises at Ravensdale, which was found to be retailing laundered fuel. The officers seized approximately 2,500

litres of laundered mineral oil, a fuel dispensing pump, an electricity generator, a large fuel storage tank, a van and four cars.

The operation was part of Revenue’s ongoing work to

target and confront shadow economy activity and fuel fraud, and was supported by officers from the Criminal Assets Bureau.

In a separate operation on Thursday July 27, Revenue

officers, assisted by a detector dog, carried out a number of searches under warrant on lock-up units in the Dundalk area.

They seized 120kg of tobacco branded ‘Flandria’,

‘Gold Leaf’, ‘Samson’, ‘Amber Leaf’ and ‘Springfield’, and 25,000 cigarettes branded ‘L&M’ and ‘Gold Classic’.

The contraband tobacco seizure came as part Rev-

enue’s ongoing intelligenceled work targeting of the illegal importation, supply and sale of tobacco products.

The retail value of the contraband tobacco product

is over €74,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €60,000.

Investigations are continuing in both cases, with a view to prosecution.

She then went on to finish eighth in the U20 World Championships in Italy two weeks later.

And the month of July ended with even more success for St Gerard’s as 100 metre sprinter Patience Jumbo-Gula claimed the bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic festival in Hungary and bronze in the 4x100m relay.

Gerard’s the standard of athletes in the club have never been higher. However, despite the club’s recent success Michael feels the athletes are being short changed due to the lack of a running track in Dundalk.

“The success we’ve had recently has been nothing short of amazing and what Kate, Gina and Patience have done is a credit to all the hard work they’ve put in over the last few years. We have a great committee in the club who have helped make sure we improve year on year and give our athletes the very best chance to be the best they can be. Success like we’ve seen this month is huge for us as it gives the younger kids belief that they too can medal on the

biggest stage if they put in the work.

“All that being said I do feel that we are being held back by the fact we have no running track in the town.

The Dundalk Young Irelands club have been brilliant to us by letting us use their pitch but we are in dire need of a proper track.

We can only do so much for our local athletes but as seen with Gina Akpe Moses who moved to Birmingham we just cannot offer the athletes the facilities they need to progress.

“My own daughter Kate has to travel to Belfast and Dublin a few times a week due to the lack of a proper running track in town and Patience is in the same boat. We have some brilliant coaches

here in Dundalk but we need help to give our athletes the best chance,” warned Michael.

Fine Gael councillor Maria Doyle echoed Michael’s concerns saying that a running track is badly needed in the town.

“I have had meetings with St Gerard’s AC a few times over the past couple of years and they have outlined

their needs for a running track for their athletes. I am fully behind them and I think that a track is badly needed in the town.

This is something I called for two years ago around the time when the town council were talking about a proposed velodrome at Hoey’s Lane in Muirhevnamor. While I wasn’t against the idea of a velodrome I did

say that any plans should incorporate a running track as well given the size of the area.

“It would be nice to see a bit of momentum behind calls for a running track in the area. I know Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick has been exploring avenues be done but it’s definitely something that I think needs to be looked at,” stated Maria.

Jersey appeal for Haiti trip

By Paul Byrne Local volunteers will be among a group of people travelling to Haiti this October to visit orphanages and help disadvantaged children in the poverised country. Haiti has been hit by a number of disasters in recent years including earthquakes, hurricanes and a cholera outbreak and Irish charity called Haiti Orphanage Project have been providing facilities and improving conditions for disadvantaged children in the country.

Michael Dooley from Ravensdale will travel to October along with Ciaran Tansey (Newtownbalregan) and Lisa Toner (Dundalk) in October and he is appealing for people to donate anything they can that could help improve life for the children of Haiti.

“Myself Kieran and Lisa are heading over to Haiti in October and if anybody has any donations they would like to give us we would accept them gladly. We are talking about anything and everything from

“We are working with a charity called Haiti Orphanage Project ESPWA which was set up in 2011 with the help of Kieran. I decided to get involved as my Dad John would have travelled to Haiti a few years ago and helped out by building homes over there after earthquakes and hurricanes devastated the island. If

anybody has anything at all they would like to give us they can contact me personally and we can arrange to meet,” stated Michael.

Haiti Orphanage Project ESPWA is an Irish NGO established in 2011 by a group of volunteers to support vulnerable children in Haiti.

The organisation’s primary goal is to provide facilities and implement best practice

for disadvantaged children in Haiti. Their current project on the island of Ille a Vache is an orphanage catering for over 70 children, 30 of whom have special needs.

Their achievements to date include new dormitories; a new kitchen and canteen facilities; pathways for wheelchair access; water & sanitation and livelihoods training for Haitian team members.

Battle is on for Oyster Pearl crown

Following a three month trawl for this year’s oyster pearl contestants, the Carlingford Oyster Festival organisers are delighted to announce the final nine contestants have been selected.

Woman had a history of criminality A woman who was described as having a history of criminality was told she would spend a long time in prison if she re-offended after being given a suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Margaret Reid (44) of 20 Langfield, Dublin Rd, Dundalk, had pleaded guilty to theft from Penneys, Marshes, on June 19, 2016 and appeared in court for

the production of a Probation Report. Judge John Coughlan imposed a ten-month suspended sentence and warned her not to get into trouble again.

“You have a history of criminality and you will serve that sentence if you do anything in the next ten months. I never want to see you again. Ten months is a long time in Dochas, Mountjoy,” added the judge.

Case struck out as News compensation paid in Brief A man who crashed into a wall and fled the scene initially told Gardai that his vehicle had been stolen on the night in question before admitting responsibility.

Mark Rafferty of 41 Lough an Tarve, Knocbridge, Dundalk, was driving from Blackrock to Knockbridge on October 9 last year when he crashed into a garden wall, before leaving the scene on foot.

The court heard that he tried to re-

port the theft of his van but later admitted that he was driving.

Solicitor, Stephen Reel stated that the defendant came forward himself and had paid €3,000 compensation.

His own car was written off in the incident. He added that the 32-year-old is a father of two children who had never come to Garda attention before.

Judge John Coughlan struck the matter out.

Medals galore at Cobra-Kan Championships

Beating potato blight with gene editing EU-funded researchers are looking at ways to make potatoes more resistant to the blight that caused the Irish famines in the 19th century. They have discovered a ground-breaking gene-editing technique known as CRISPR-Cas which allows scientists to delete or add genes at will. By removing a gene that makes potatoes vulnerable to blight, CRISPR can make potatoes more resilient and help to meet the world’s growing demand for food. Potato blight continues to wipe out enough potatoes to feed hundreds of millions of people every year in areas without access to chemical sprays.

Yet again it was another brilliant performance for the members of local Martial arts and kickboxing club Cobra-Kan last weekend during the WOMMA championships that took place in the City West hotel Dublin.

Cobra Kan, one of the oldest and most successful martial arts and kickboxing clubs in Ireland, raked up another tally of 14 medals from the championships across a mix of points and continuous fighting and kata displays.

All members of the club and committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the recent Flag Day that was held in the town. These funds are going towards new equipment for the club and in supporting the competitors that will be travelling as part of the Irish kickboxing team that are going to Orlando Florida in November of this year.

Confusion over reports of funding for Ardee by-pass Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach sought clarification on the funding of the Ardee By-Pass after it had been reported that the money had been made available.

However, the local TD revealed that in a letter from the Government’s Capital Investment Plan (CIP), he had been informed that the Ardee Bypass was not included amongst

those projects which were identified for development during the period of the plan.

“Following reports which suggested that Minister Ross had announced funding for the Ardee By-Pass I sought clarification from TII and from the Minister’s office.

“I have learned that an amount of €250,000 has been allocated to appoint consult-

ants to finalise contract documents.

“This is the only funding that has been announced and I have received confirmation of this from both TII and the Department today,” he explained.

“While I welcome this funding which is a clear indication that the development will go ahead at some stage in the future, the main funding for the

development of the by-pass has not yet been allocated.

“It was also confirmed to me today that some immediate measures are being considered to increase safety on the N2 between Ardee and Castleblayney which is very welcome in light of the recent tragic fatalities on this stretch of road,” concluded Deputy Breathnach.

Local Transition Year students were given the opportunity to learn more about business and finance when PayPal hosted a series of financial education workshops.

More than 400 transition year students from six local secondary schools have taken part in the programme during the recent academic year at its Dundalk office.

The workshops are part of PayPal’s Financial Inclusion Charity Grant Programme, which provided Junior Achievement Ireland with €9,300 ($10,000), as well as the support of 60 PayPal teammates to deliver the workshops over three days.

A number of PayPal’s senior management team were on hand to meet and greet the students. The workshops gave the transition year students the opportunity to learn more about money, budgeting, sav-

The Balancing Act programme comprises of three modules – Balancing act; Your credit, your future; and Savvy shopper. The first of these modules educates students about living within their means, managing budgets and saving. The second component explained various financial products to the students with

an emphasis on understanding credit applications criteria. The final module focused on understanding the need to plan before shopping.

The 400 students also enjoyed a guided tour of the vibrant and modern working environment at PayPal’s European Operations Centre, including the large open-plan offices, gym, games room, restaurants and cafés.

Dundalk man caught driving while disqualified A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance at a time when he was disqualified was sentenced to five months at Dundalk District Court.

The court heard that the defendant had 23 previous con-

victions, including two for no insurance.

for Community Service.

However, Judge John Coughlan imposed the sentence along with a ten-year driving ban, while he fixed recognisances for appeal.

Dundalk Golf Club’s juvenile section has had a week to remember and it culminated last Friday in a first ever Leinster title in the Fred Daly Trophy, Ireland’s premier inter-cub tournament for U18 Boys.

In addition, juvenile captain Eoin Murphy has been named on the Ireland team for the Boys U18 Home Internationals from August 8 to 10 at St Anne’s Old Links in Lytham St Anne’s, England.

Murphy also helped Leinster to the Boys U18 Interprovincial Championship in Blarney last week while another Dundalk player, Josh Mackin, was unbeaten in his three matches for Leinster at the Boys U16 Interprovincials.

Daly Leinster Final at Portmarnock Links represents a major breakthrough for Dundalk, who were beaten at the same stage in 1996 when the competition was only in its second year.

This very talented team will now be hop-

ing to go all the way when they gather with the other three provincial champions for the All-Ireland Finals on Tuesday, August 29, in Bray Golf Club.

Dundalk got off to a dream start in Portmarnock when Sean Lav-

erty, playing in the third match, got the first point on board by closing out his clash with Robbie O’Brien on the 12th green.

Laverty was in control from the start, winning the first four holes, and he won another four

holes in a row from the ninth to win 8&6.

However, it was not as cut and dry in the other four matches. In the top match Murphy defeated Ben Hynes on the 17th green, while Josh Mackin also won on the 17th to ensure the victory for Dundalk.

Behind him Kyle Rafferty was two down after 14 against Christopher Lawless when their match was called in while Padraig Fallon was one up playing the 15th after producing a most amazing comeback.

The Leinster Pennant was presented to Team Manager Vincent Conlon by John Ferriter, Chairman of Leinster Golf who also presented each of the players and substitute Conall Murdock with their winners medals.

All-Ireland Poc Fada finals on this weekend

The All-Ireland Poc Fada finals in hurling and camogie will be held on the Cooley Mountains on Saturday August 5. The competition was first held in 1960 and except for a ten-year period in the 1970s and early 80s when it didn’t take place the event has been a hugely popular event attracting people from near and far each August.

The unique GAA contest promises to be a great day of sport and will see Clare’s James McInerney try to retain the crown he won last year while Aoife Murray

from Cork will do likewise as she tries to defend the senior camogie title she won for the first time in 2016.

Former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins is a nine-time winner of the event and he too will be returning looking to reclaim his crown having lost last year for the first time since 2010.

Gerard Smyth will represent Louth in the Men’s senior event and given that he has taken part in the competition before he will be hoping his experience can lead him to the podium.

Apart from the finals the day promises to be

an interesting one. Traditional Irish music will be provided by 20 young musicians accompanied by their teacher the well-known and famous traditional music teacher Noirin McManus from Dromiskin.

With her pupils participating at an open air All Ireland Final at Annaverna no doubt the Hills will be alive to the Sound of Music. Tim Mullen will also be in attendance with his reenactment of the Táin march featuring Cuchulainn, Ferdia and Queen Medb.

site and in the event of poor weather there will be marquees available for shelter from the elements. Ample car parking will be available at the base at Annaverna and four courtesy 4x4 vehicles will ferry passengers up from the carpark to the Start area.

Pat Harnett, Chairman of the Louth-Armagh Committee who make the arrangements for the Finals urges spectators to arrive early and use the car parks. The last section of the road is suitable for 4x4 wheel drive vehicles only and car parks will be supervised on the day. The event begins at 11am.

Ulster title for Anne Cuchulainn’s Anne Duffy has capped an incredible season by winning the Ulster Cross Country Mountain Bike Championships in Castlewellan Forest Park on Sunday last.

As Anne is living close to Newry, she qualifies to compete in Ulster, despite riding for a Leinster based club. Her dominance from start to finish, was such that there was more racing going on behind with Banbridge’s Ruth Aiken losing out on a silver medal to Dromara’s Wannita Broome. The club also picked up a medal, as Declan McCabe claimed the silver in the Masters 50 race.

Next up for the Mountain Bikers is the classic event “Da Cooley Thriller” hosted by Cuchulainn Cycling Club. The event on August 12 will take in some of Cooley’s finest scenery and see the senior riders tackle 52km of off road tracks and trails over the mountains.

Caught driving without insurance A man who is currently serving a six-month sentence was given a further five months after pleading guilty to driving without insurance.

Thomas Ward with an address at 13 Glenmore Park was stopped by Gardai at Barronstown, Hackballacross, on May 10.

Solicitor Dermot Monahan stated that the 24-yearold defendant was from the Travelling Community and had lost his wife in 2014. He added that Mr Ward had no children and that he didn’t have a difficulty with either drink or drugs.

The solicitor pointed out

that the defendant is due for release in November of this year and is anxious to get on with his life.

Judge John Coughlan, who heard that Mr Ward had 64 previous convictions including no insurance, imposed a ten-year driving band and a five-month sentence.

Drink driving

A woman who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court.

Veronica Ward of (55), Ardaghy, Omeath who admitted the offence after being stopped by Gardai at Marshes Lower on February was also fined €35.

The defendant also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and was banned for three years, with Judge John Coughlan taking other matters into account.

Public order

Two men who pleaded guilty two public order charges at Dundalk Distirct Court were told to make a contribution to charity if they wished to have the matters struck out.

James McArdle (23), 192H Lower Point Road and Conor Murphy (21), 46 Manydown Close, both admitted the offences of intoxication and threatening and abusive behaviour at Park St on March 26.

Mr Murphy paid €300 to the Court Poor Box, while Mr McArdle had his case adjourned to September 6 and was told to have €200 on that date.

Chris asks council to provide more bins at Muirhevnamor

Muirhevnamor man Chris McShane has questioned why there are no bins in the area and has asked the council to look at rectifying the issue in what he says is one of the busiest areas in town.

“It beggars belief that there are no bins up around the sports complex and park in Muirhevnamor. You have the sports complex, park, boxing club and community centre all within a short distance of one another with a huge amount of people using these facilities each day yet there isn’t a single bin for anybody to use to get rid of their rubbish”, he said.

“There are so many kids in

the area that are eating sweets and drinking cans of mineral and there is simply nowhere for them to dispose of their rubbish. It’s actually encouraging littering. My wife has been into the council offices to ask why they have not installed bins but they have never given her a satisfactory answer.

“You would think that they could even put a bin in the park for people to dispose of their dog poo. It is such a popular spot for people walking their dogs yet there is nowhere for them to dump their doggy bags. This has been like this for as long as I can remember and I would hope that somebody somewhere in the council will have a look at this issue and

try and do something for us up here,” stated Chris.

“As well as the bin-issue we are also wondering why there is no bus shelter on Tom Bellew Avenue. For a country where rain is so common a bus shelter is a necessity especially in a built-up area like where we are. The funny thing is there are two bus shelters outside the Crowne Plaza hotel where local buses don’t even travel,” he added.

In response Louth County council released the following statement regarding the issue.

“It is Council policy not to place litter bins in residential areas and the Council is not increasing the number of litter bins in the County due to

the use of these bins by some households for the disposal of domestic waste. The installation of bus shelters is a matter for Bus Eireann.”

Chris also wrote a short poem bemoaning the lack of bins in the area which can be read below: “A community centre high on the hill, a boxing club to do fitness drill.

A sports complex that took some time to update, a soccer club with no bin at the gate, As a matter of fact, no bins in the park, with a playground there, sod that for a lark.

And when you poopy scoop after your pet, you carry it home in your own bin you set.”

Over 10,000 people living alone in Louth

THE Central Statistics Office (CSO) recently published Profile 4 Households and Families, the latest of the eleven Census 2016 profile reports.

The report shows that there were 1,218,370 families in

the State on Census Night, an increase of 3.3% since 2011.

The number of children per family remained unchanged at 1.38 children since the 2011 census.

Locally there were 45,448 privately owned houses in Louth with a total of 127,751 people living in them an aver-

age of 2.8 per household. Locally there were 10,260 people living alone in the county, an increase of 190 people from the previous census in 2011. This figure means that 8% of all private households are lived in by just one person. Of those 10,260 people 5,150 were females and 5,110

were males.

Not surprisingly this percentage increases as people get older with the figure rising to 26.4% of people who are 65 or over living alone. It jumps again to 46.1% when talking about those people in the 85+ bracket. In total there are 1,239 people who are 85

and over living in private accommodation with 571 of those living on their own.

The latest figures also showed that there are 35,809 single males in Co. Louth and 33,737 females. 45,663 people in the county were on their first marriage while 1,658 people had remarried.

Tribute to Irish Coast Guard helicopter crew

Boats from all over Ireland paid tribute to the crew of Rescue 116 on Sunday afternoon on Carlingford Lough with almost 100 yachts and motorboats gathering to remembered the four crew members of Rescue 116 who tragically lost their lives when their helicopter crashed off Blacksod in Co Mayo when out on a search and rescue mission.

The bodies of local man Capt Mark Duffy and Capt Dara Fitzpatrick were recovered after the crash but winch operator Paul

Ormsby and winch man Ciarán Smith’s bodies were never recovered.

Family members of the dead laid wreaths and red and white roses on the Lough to pay tribute to the four crew members. The tribute began with a lone piper playing while the boats entered Carlingford marina.

The Irish Coast Guard flew over the bay where friends and family had gathered to pay their respects to the dead. The event was organised by Sheila Fitzgerald who lost her cousin Ciarán Smith in the crash.

According to Jonathan

O’Connor Moneley, manager at Carlingford Marina, the event went very well and was a fitting tribute to the four lost crew members.

“We had boats from all over the country come down to us on Sunday and it all made for a wonderful tribute on the Lough to Dara, Mark, Ciarán and Paul.

The boats were lined up in single file at one stage heading out towards Warenpoint and Rostrevor. We had first responder units from both sides of the border joining in the flotilla and it made for a very emotional ceremony,” explained Jonathan.

Drama in final round of snooker league The Peadar Callan Summer Snooker League produced a fantastic night of drama on the final week of the regular season.

The final league positions were up for grabs with the team finishing first playing the team finishing fourth in the play-offs and second playing third in the other play-off. It made for a night of tense drama in the Commercial Club.

In the first two matches Paddy Hayes’ team played Mickey Ralph’s

spot with victory over league leaders Stephen O’Hanlon’s team, while Paddy’s team lost to Mickey Ralph’s side.

In the final match Alan Thompson’s side knew a win would leave them finishing first and they made no mistake beating Brendan O’Hanlon’s men 3-1 with Alan Thompson recording a fine 69 total clearance in the decider.

The cup competitions start next week and will be followed by the league play-offs.

Disappointment for Dundalk golfers in Leinster Final

Dundalk Golf Club’s Junior Cup team’s efforts to win a second Leinster pennant in three years ended in heartbreak on Saturday evening in Callan when they were beaten 3-2 by Malahide.

After winning the quarter final against the semi-final was a real topsy turvey affair with the lead shifting several times over the duration of the afternoon before the match went to the wire. Ciaran Traynor lost 3& 2 in the top match and Kyle Rafferty also lost 3&2 but Clem Walshe had a comprehensive 5&4 win before Shane Hession won on the 19th to leave the tie delicately poised at 2-2 with one match out on the course.

There was little between Brian Og Renaghan and his opponent Ryan Gibson but a controversial ruling on the ninth hole saw the Dundalk player denied a win that would have put him two up and instead left all-square at the turn. The pair remained deadlocked all the way to 20th hole when Gibson birdied to

Darren joins list of MMA coaches Coach Darren Sonik (Sanda MMA Dundalk) has joined the list of 20 officially licensed Mixed Martial Arts coaches in Ireland.

Darren was selected by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) to

attend an intense seminar and course last weekend and he was then presented his level 3 MMA coaching award.

This now allows him to grade students in MMA and it is a massive step in the evolution and growth of the sport

from the grass roots up.

Already heavily involved in the MMA scene, Darren was recently the Irish MMA Team Head Coach in their successful endeavours at the European Open in Sofia, Bulgaria bringing back a bronze medal.
