Sonia Hoey will travel to Mexico in three weeks time to begin treatment in the Hope for Cancer clinic in Mexico where she will stay for a month.

Earlier this year Dundalk and the wider community dug deep to support local woman Sonia Hoey who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

A massive fundraising campaign was launched for the former Dundalk FC player with the aim of raising €80,000 which would help pay for life changing treatment in Mexico and potentially improve her overall

condition as well as shrinking her tumours.

The response was overwhelming with donations coming in from all over the country with over €100,000 eventually being raised. Now Sonia is getting ready to travel to Mexico along with her sister Serena where she will stay for a month while getting treatment in the Hope for Cancer clinic where she will receive treatment to hopefully prolong her life. According to Sonia’s nephew Daniel Hoey who helped set up the fundraiser his aunty is in great spirits now that she has a date set for treatment in Mexico.

further reach it has had spreading further than just our town,” stated Daniel.

“She’s nervous and excited at the same time.

She’ll be in treatment from 7am until 3pm for six days each week.

She’ll have Sundays off but between the diet and then the treatments she’ll be getting she is a bit anxious but we’re all positive it’ll help.

“Her sister Serena McArdle is flying over with her to give her some company as well. At

least she’ll be a good lift for Sonia if she’s feeling tired or not feeling herself. It’s a shame this is happening during covid or other members of the family could take turns going over to give her some more support but we’re grateful enough we’re able to send Sonia in the first place,” added Daniel.

Sonia is a 42-yearold, well-known sportsperson who was originally diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer in February 2019. She underwent an aggressive treatment of radiation and chemotherapy every day for two months. She was almost a year in remission when she got the sad news for the second

time in July 2020, incurable cervical cancer had returned and this time it has spread to her lungs.

The Ard Easmuinn native has received the maximum dose of radiation, so she can’t undergo this treatment again.

Thanks to the generosity of the Dundalk and wider community she will now undergo treat-

ment at the Hope for Cancer clinic in Mexico instead.

She won the FAI Cup Final with Dundalk FC also in 2005 scoring the winning goal against Peamount Utd and she was also the captain of the DkIT football college team that won the Interprovincial college tournament.

Sonia will travel to Mexico in three weeks time to begin treatment.

An increase in outdoor dining is on the menu this summer with Louth County Council set to tackle the obvious challenges of the unpredictable Irish weather thanks to funding to the tune of €545,000.

The local authority received funding of €585,000 from the National Transport Authority under the Outdoor Infrastructure Fund last year which allowed for the creation of outdoor dining facilities by way of provision of parklets, parasols, picnic tables and planters.

Due to the success of that pilot scheme the NTA launched another scheme for 2021. Louth County Council again submitted an application and was again successful and has now been advised of further funding of € 545,000 for 2021.

A range of measures will be completed in the main towns of Drogheda, Dundalk, Ardee as well as our county towns.

Under the 202O NTA Outdoor Infrastructure fund €190,000 was allocated to Dundalk.

This provided for ten Parklets at , Ruby’s Tearoom, Francis St, The Copper Kettle, Longwalk, Rock Salt, Earl St, Deli Lites, Clanbrassil St, XXI Ice, Clanbrassil st, Ma Brady’s, Bridge St, The Townhouse, Roden Place and 23 Seats, Crowe St with plans in place for two more to be provided in the town center.

To facilitate outdoor dining 12 parasols and 24 flower planters were installed in the core Town center of Dundalk.

Flexi bollards were used in areas to provide areas for social distancing.

The remaining funding was spent countywide and included the provision of Parklets in Ardee, Blackrock, Carlingford and Annagassan.

In 2021 Fáilte Ireland launched an Outdoor Dining Enhancement Investment Scheme, to support Local Authorities and hospitality businesses with upgrading and enhancing streets and public spaces and implementing weather-proofing solutions which will facilitate year-round outdoor dining. This was greeted with much delight by Louth County Council who promptly submitted 2 applications for funding for Carlingford and Dundalk.

Fáilte Irelands Outdoor dining scheme 2021 – Application for funding of €119,000 for Earl Street Dundalk Earl Street, Dundalk has been selected as one of Louth’s applications for funding under Fáilte Irelands Outdoor dining scheme with €119,000 earmarked to enhance facilities in that area.

It is proposed that Earl Street will become a covered area using four large tulip style parasols. It is a widely used pedestrian street in the heart of Dundalk and is directly adjacent to the market square which form the centerpiece of the town centre.

Earl Street in right in the centre of the town and as such has a large number of amenities, eateries and restaurants close by.

In good weather both Earl Street and Market Square are well used throughout the day with people gathering

drinking coffee, eating lunch and meeting up.

This intervention will allow that natural congregation of people to continue in all types of weather.

Should the Council be

successful the provision of an outdoor dining area will add a further dimension to the already well used Earl Street area, providing a focus and the opportunity for further dwell time. The

proposed intervention is designed and positioned so that the covering could be used for a range of uses including, dining, picnicking, covered market and staging area for music festivals.

The 4 no. tulip parasols are primarily to allow businesses that do not have outdoor space to have an area that they can utilize in order to comply with covid-19 requirements.

De La Salle Principal, Patricia O’Leary receives a presentation from Leaving Certificate students, Geordan Richardson and Mathew Geraghty on her retirement as Principal for ten years.

Mrs O’Leary began teaching in the school in the 1980’s as a teacher of Geography and Irish and then later as a Special Educational Teacher.

Zoe Conway features in new Riverdance film Lockdown may have prevented Zoe Conway from playing gigs in front of a live audience but the supremely gifted fiddler player and violinist has been keeping busy over the last 12 months with the Carlingford based musician lending her talents to two major movies. Last Friday, Riverdance: The Animated Adventure was released on Sky Cinema and the movie features plenty of contributions from Zoe who recorded all her parts at home with the help of her husband John McIntyre in the studio they share in their house in Carlingford.

According to Zoe Riverdance has been a big part of her life and she was delighted to be asked to contribute to the recently released movie.

“I toured with Riverdance for ten years on and off when I was younger and I became

He was asked to do a reworking of the film and he asked would I take part in the project and I was obviously delighted to say yes. It was all done during lockdown which caused some issues for producers but they did brilliantly to think outside the box and get everything

sorted out. I know they were struggling to find an orchestra to play some of the parts due to lockdown and they eventually had to travel to Austria to use one over there. I was able to record all my parts at home as my husband John is a sound engineer and we have a wee studio in the house so it was quite easy for us to get my parts together

and just email them over to Bill.

“I actually got to see a sneak preview of the movie last September in between lockdowns when I was playing one of the few gigs I did last year over at the Clifden Arts Festival.

Bill lives quite close to Clifden so he invited us over to his house where we got to see the finished movie which

was great. I didn’t get to watch it at home the other night when it was released officially but we have plans to get the popcorn in and watch it as a family at home in the near future. My two kids are ten and twelve so they are both looking forward to seeing it,” explained Zoe. “It’s amazing what you can do from home nowadays and it was a Godsend to be able to get involved in these projects given the fact that everything was closed down for most of the year,” she added.

Zoe also features in recently released ‘Finding You’ which was partly shot in Carlingford tells the story of violinist Finley (Rose Reid) who travels to the Irish coast for a semester to rediscover her passion for music.

by Finley in the film is actually played by Zoe.

Hack the hackers—O’Murchú

The State should consider creating the capacity to ‘counterstrike’ against hackers who attack computer systems with ransomware, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.

The Sinn Féin TD was speaking after a number of meetings of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications which heard from a number of cybersecurity experts about strategies to deal with hack attacks in future.

One expert, Pat Larkin, CEO of Ward Solutions, said the best defence was to have the ability to counterstrike against the hackers.

Deputy Ó Murchú said the State has to look at this idea and consider creating the ability to ‘hack the hackers’.

The Louth TD, along with his committee colleague, Darren O’Rourke TD, also called for the state’s cyber security apparatus to be established on a statutory

footing and for the appropriate funding and resourcing to be allocated to it.

The ransomware attack on the HSE has had a devastating impact on the provision of health services across Ireland, Deputy Ó Murchú said, with ‘expert after expert telling the committee the State’s cyber security systems are under-resourced’.

The current annual budget of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) needs to be boosted from €5 million to €50 million, according to expert testimony.

He said: ‘From the comments of expert witnesses, it is clear that a much wider focus on the structure, governance, funding and resourcing of cyber security is now needed. The ongoing review of the National Cyber Security Centre will help inform this.

‘There has been a more than 300% increase in cyber attacks

on systems over the last year.

Experts at the committee have said they were previously dealing with one attack a week on average, which has increased to one a day now, according to Minister Ossian Smyth.

‘We heard evidence at the Oireachtas Committee that the NCSC is not on a statutory footing. This needs to be addressed immediately.

‘New legislation is needed to underpin the state’s cyber security capabilities. They have to be creative and innovative when coming up with solutions and that includes thinking about counterstriking capacity.

‘A vulnerability assessment of other vital IT systems, such as the electricity grid and banking services, currently underway, needs to be prioritised, to identify any weaknesses that might exist in these essential areas’.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick has proposed an amendment to be made in the Personal Insolvency Act which he says will help people over 50 who are in debt and in danger of losing their homes.

“The Personal Insolvency Act was introduced to address deficiencies in the law and provide for fair and reasonable settlement of debt without having to resort to bankruptcy, which was then the only solution available in Ireland. The amendment I propose is very simple and straightforward but, I believe, will allow our courts to force the most needed solution on our banks. I call on the Government to accept the amendment.

“The solution I am looking for is for people who are 50 and over because everything else in insolvency law helps younger people.

I know many people in my area and other areas in the country who are in their 50s and the last thing they want is to lose their homes. It is very important that legislation looks after all citizens, no matter their age. The thing that really annoys me is that the bank says the solution I am looking for is complicated. How do you tell a family who is losing their home that it is complicated? How do you tell the homeless in the streets it is complicated? I feel that

my solution is a very simple one. It gives the courts the authority to go ahead and do what they think is best.

“I will be honest with the Minister of State. I am delighted he said the Department will engage with me.

I am overwhelmed by the support I am getting from the Opposition. I was not going to press the amendment but I think I would be doing an injustice to the people I represent in my constituency, the people who work very hard during these crises, were I not to do so.

I know those people should not have gone to the bank and got so much money. However, these banks lend these people substantial amounts of money and I do not know how they ever thought people were going to pay it back. I will be pressing the amendment,” promised Deputy Fitzpatrick.

Senator McGreehan commented, “This is national epilepsy week and there are a few things that can go a little way to help people with epilepsy. We must raise awareness and create more understanding of the condition.

“I support The Epilepsy Association in their call for free travel for people with epilepsy and for reasonable accommodation during examinations. These are very practical requests.

“Due to the unpredictable nature of epilepsy, and stress caused by the Leaving Cert it can lower the seizure threshold.

If you have a seizure during the Leaving Cert you will have to wait another year to sit the exam. There should be a possibility to sit the exam again in July or given extra time. Flexibility to the issue is needed.”

The Louth Senator supports the calls for use of medical cannabis in epilepsy to be added to the Medical Cannabis Access Programme before it launches in order to make it accessible to people with epilepsy and their clinicians.

Three local beaches receive Blue Flag award

THREE Co Louth beaches have been awarded Blue Flags for 2021, according to the Education Unit of An Taisce.

Shellinghill/Templetown, Port, and Clogherhead all succeeded in retaining their Blue Flag status this year. Meanwhile, Seapoint in Termonfeckin received a Green Coast Award.

The Blue Flag and Green Coast Award sites for 2021 were announced

by Ian Diamond, Coastal Awards Manager with An Taisce’s Environmental Education unit.

The announcement was

made in a virtual awards ceremony attended by Local Authorities, marina operators and Clean Coasts groups who volunteer at the beaches receiving Green Coast Awards this year.

The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels. This year Ireland is continuing to punch above its weight with a record breaking 93 sites awarded, up two on last year’s total.

The programme aims to raise environmental awareness and promote sound environmental management of beaches,

McGreehan welcomes moves to prioritise measures to help address Traveller disadvantage

Louth Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed moves by Minister Joe O’Brien who has asked each government Minister to place particular emphasis on the disadvantaged situation of Travellers when putting forward their proposed measures under the Dormant Accounts Fund (DAF) and the measures to be funded for each Department in the DAF 2022 Action Plan to be published later this year.

The DAF can be used to fund measures that address economic, social or educational disadvantage; or support persons with a disability. Each Government Department is given the opportunity to identify measures it would like to see funded under the DAF action Plan.

Senator McGreehan commented, “After raising the deplorable living conditions that our citizens from the Travelling community are living in in the Seanad on Monday last I am delighted that swift action has been taken.

“It is important that for every vulnerable group we take an all of Government approach to protect and support. We need to empower our citizens and support them to achieve their goals. Everyone should be living in safe conditions; the Government, Local Authorities and the travelling community need to engage and find ways to work to create better and suitable housing.

“We can create further opportunities through sport, education, employment and community and we can foster a better future for everyone.”

‘Belonging’ is the theme of St Louis Dundalk’s new vivid and vibrant artwork which can be seen casting a glow from the back entrance of the school. Designed in consultation with the student body and created by Friz, the artist behind ‘The Bridget of Faughart’, the mural encapsulates everything that St Louis stands for and is a daily reminder to each and every student who passes it, that they belong.

‘Ut sint unum’ which can be seen on the ribbon scroll is a Latin phrase meaning ‘that they may be one’. Embedded in the school’s ethos and visible on the school crest, this is a term regularly used at St Louis.

It means that everyone there is a member of the St Louis family and each person deserves respect, regardless of race, creed or religion.

The words ‘Welcome’, ‘Wisdom’ and ‘Witness’ serve as focal points for the piece and are the foundations a Le Chéile education is built on, the Trust to which St

Louis belongs.

The famous St Louis welcome, symbolised by a handshake, recognises the unique dignity and worth of each person. An owl represents students’ engagement in the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge so they can have a greater understanding and appreciation of the world. Outcomers and Cara-friend presents the Cross-Border Open Dialogue Project with LGBT+ Young People

In March 2021, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people aged 14 17 from Outcomers LGBT Support Service in Dundalk and Cara-Friend LGBT+ Youth Service in Belfast came together for the first time to take part in a crossborder project. The Project is supported by Louth Meath Education Training Board and Louth County Council through the European Union PEACEPeace IV Small Grants Programme. Match funding has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and

Community Development in Ireland.

The Open Dialogue Project brings together two LGBT+ youth groups from Dundalk and Belfast to engage in open dialogue looking at peace and reconciliation and to explore the history of the North of Ireland, the troubles and where the LGBTI+ community fits into that history. It will take place over a six-month period and will conclude in August 2021.

Due to covid-19 restrictions, the project has so far taken place online via Zoom and Discord, but eve-

ryone involved is hopeful that with restrictions easing the two youth groups will be able to come together for in-person workshops and events in both Belfast and Dundalk.

The need for this project emerged when it came to our attention that some of our young people had a fear of attending Newry Pride, there were questions about why there was trouble in the north and what it was about.

Even though the Troubles in Northern Ireland had ended a long time ago, there seem to have been some skewed views of them and some

misinformed opinions. In all of the friends our young people had, very few had any friends from Northern Ireland or from the Protestant community.

Outcomers set about rekindling old relationships with LGBT+ groups in Northern Ireland and found a perfect fit with our activities and our ethos in Cara- Friend after some chatting we decided that it would be great to bring these two groups of young people together in order to create a new Dialogue for the future. After only two meetings the young people

are making new friends and sharing their experience and showing what we expected, that all of us have more similarities than differences and have had some shared anxieties around our sexuality or gender identity. The fact that our young people were reluctant to go and celebrate pride North of the border due to fear and anxiety about the location highlighted for Outcomers the effect that the border and the Troubles had on their lives.

As we look to the future we see that the Open Dialogue Project is going to

create long lasting friendships and more informed opinions and great memories for all involved.

Outcomers is a support service for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan. It was set up in 1997, based in Dundalk, Co. Louth. 100k in 30 days fundraiser begins Dundalk Leader 2nd June 2021

THOUSANDS of participants have kicked off the 100k in 30 days fundraiser in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland.

The fun family-friendly fundraiser started on Tuesday, June 1 and will run across the entire month.

Local couple Cara McAdam and Niall Carroll launched the virtual fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland.

Cara and Niall from Blackrock and thousands of #pinkarmy participants raised €1.2 million last year from the popular event.

Niall launched the 100km in 30 Days challenge in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland last June, after Cara was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas 2019.

Niall set a target of raising €100,000.

However, the event proved to be a huge success and quickly raised over €1 million for the charity.

This year’s event, has a new title sponsor, Sherry Fitzgerald, and is expected to be even bigger and better.

People are invited to walk, jog, run or wheel a total of 100km during the month of June to help raise funds.

There are around €30,000 worth of prizes to be won throughout the event including a €3,500 family travel voucher, sponsored by Connect Credit Union, fivestar hotel breaks, restaurant vouchers, luxury brands and family days out.

RAI frustrated over government decision over indoor dining The Restaurant Association of Ireland have expressed their frustration and disbelief over the government’s decision to allow only a portion of indoor dining to recommence on June 2nd. Many local restaurants were hoping to be able to open up this week but their plans were thwarted when the government announced that only hotels could partake in indoor dining for now.

“The reaction to the Government announcement on Friday from the Restaurant sector is one of frustration and disbelief

from indoor dining for the vital first few weeks of summer, is a ‘practical’ and not a scientific one.

“We have followed all of the health guideline and regulations since March of last year, however the decision today to permit indoor dining in a range of settings, including hotels, B&Bs and indeed cinemas weeks before standalone restaurants, cafes and gastropubs can only be seen as an arbitrary, unjust and discriminative one. This decision restricts a section of the hospitality

industry’s ability to trade viably over the summer as only 20% of the sector can engage in outdoor dining. It also prevents employees from returning to work and jeopardises the re-employment of 110,00 worker.”

“Restaurants, hotels, cafes and gastropubs have all followed and implemented the exact same safety protocols for diners since June of last year, we signed up to the same Safety Charter. If the medical advisors and government have decided it is now safe for indoor dining in a hotel

restaurant then standalone restaurants, cafes and gastropubs should be permitted to reopen at the same time too – what we are asking for is Indoor Dining Equality!

“Finally, the Restaurants Association of Ireland is calling for a fair and equitable solution by allowing all independent restaurants, cafes and gastro pubs to reopen alongside hotel and guesthouse restaurants and failing that has no choice but to progress our legal challenge at the earliest opportunity,” urged Adrian.

Renewed appeal Dundalk FC supporters club hold inaugural meeting for missing Giedre

The newly launched ‘1903 Dundalk Supporters Club’ (The name refers to the founding of the football club as Dundalk GNR in 1903) held their first meeting via zoom on Monday evening where a committee was formed with Brendan Ogle being named as the group’s first ever Chairman.

According to Brendan the group will aim to promote all aspects of Dundalk Football Club including match day experience, social interaction among Dundalk FC Fans and to promote the brand of Dundalk FC locally, nationally and internationally while also promoting the League of Ireland as a whole. He also hopes that the group can turn all the recent negativity into something positive with supporters using all their concerns and energy into helping improve the club.

“We had our first meeting on Monday night and it’s great to get it up and running. There have been supporters groups in the past but I suppose when I was first in one in the 70’s the main aim of them was just to organise buses for away trips and the likes of that.

“We are a group of like-minded supporters who want to support our club and help them get better in any

way we can. Obviously we cannot buy players or bring in managers but we can work towards addressing the elephant in the room which is our ground and bring it up to the standards that we believe Dundalk FC deserve. You see the likes of Finn Harps and Sligo Rovers doing great things to improve their grounds and we believe that we can get the ball rolling in doing similar at Oriel Park by lobbying local politicians, applying for capital sports grants and launching fundraisers.

“It’s been a tough twelve months on and off the pitch for the club and there have been genuine concerns

from fans about some decisions the owners have taken but one positive to come out of everything that has been going on is the fact that we have formed this supporters club. Dundalk FC is a community club and we want to help strengthen ties between the club and the community. We have had a series of benevolent owners down through the years but now we have something different and Peak 6 are probably not as aware of the bond between club and community as many of our fans are. We aim to be a focal point for supporters and we intend to voice any concerns or pass on any ideas we have to improve the club to the powers that be and if they want to talk to supporters they have somewhere concrete to go to.

There is no negativity here and we are only looking to do positive things which will make the club we all love stronger,” stated Brendan.

The committee currently consist of Brendan Ogle (Chairperson), Andrea McQuillan (Assistant Chairperson), Jane Waldron (Secretary), Damien Mackin (Treasurer) and Lee McConville (Marketing and Media Officer).

There are currently over 300 members in the newly formed supporters club.

Gardai have renewed an appeal for missing Lithuanian woman Giedre Raguckaite on the third anniversary of her disappearance.

29-year old Giedre arrived in Ireland in early March 2018 and took up residence in Drogheda.

She moved to College Heights, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk at the end of April 2018. She moved out of that accommodation on Thursday, 24th May 2018. Between 24th - 29th May 2018 there were two sightings of her in Dundalk area.

On Tuesday evening, 29th May 2018 she made contact with a friend and at approximately 6.30pm she called her father in Lithuania. She explained that she had been in a hotel/licensed premises that day for dinner and was socialising. The location of this premises is currently unknown. It is believed she was in the Dundalk area until approximately 8pm.

She was last seen being assisted into a house in Laytown on the night of Tuesday, 29th May 2018 at 11pm by two men. It is understood she was intoxicated.

It is believed she left that house with these men at approximately 1:45am on Wednesday, 30th May 2018. There have been no sightings or contact with Giedre since that time.

Gardaí are looking to speak to anyone who: 1) Observed Giedre out socialising on Tuesday night, 29th May

2018.

2) May have provided accommodation for Giedre between 24th - 25th May 2018 or is aware of where she stayed.

3) Is holding, or is aware of the whereabouts of, any personal items of Giedre’s that was left behind during that period.

4) Observed Giedre in the company of the two men on the evening of Tuesday the 29th of May 2018 or thereafter.

5) May have any information in relation to Giedre’s activities during that period.

Busy year for St Louis Green Schools Committee St Louis Dundalk has a proud track record of innovation and action on all things green and this year is no exception. The Green Schools committee has had a busy year despite Covid restrictions, having already been awarded the Global Schools Passport for 2021-2022.

This year co-ordinating teacher Joanne Mallon, assisted by Lynne Rice asked the girls to work on their own initiative and get involved in activities that were of particular interest to them. Rhiannon Dolan is no stranger to cycling.

She has already come to the notice of serious cyclists in her excellent showings in races in recent years - a young girl with an exciting future in cycling ahead. She and Eman Derouiche were selected as #andshecycles ambassadors for St. Louis. #andshecycles which is a campaign organised by Green-Schools focuses on encouraging young women, particularly teen-agers, to

Research undertaken by Green-Schools revealed that notwithstanding the usual concerns facing every cyclist (lack of cycle lanes, safety concerns) young women were also dealing with social issues such as peer pressure; harassment on the roads from drivers and young men; and a general perception

of cycling as being “uncool”. #andshecycles hopes to change these issues and perceptions through video, social media and continued liaison with students. Green-Schools hopes that by discussing and dissecting the reasons why young women are not cycling, we can highlight the positives, the ways to overcome and, through acknowledgement, help those students who might otherwise cycle to continue to do so or begin to do so in the future.

Rhiannon and Eman took part in an interview on May 20th which will be broadcast on RTE News2day on June 3rd which is National Bike Day. Aisling Mooney quizzed the girls on why they got involved in the campaign and what plans they have for the future. The girls in St. Louis have been successful in getting a new bicycle storage shelter from An Taisce, and have met with an enthusiastic group of first years who hope to cycle next year.

Every one makes a difference. ‘It’s a fantastic initiative and I am delighted to see the girls getting involved themselves. We encourage our students to act themselves - using skills embedded in the New Junior Cycle - and this is just one example of our girls taking control of their environments and futures. It is wonderful to know that the world is in good hands. When we motivate the young the world changes,’ enthused Joanne Mallon.

First responders looking for volunteers Having been inactive since last March due to COVID-19 the Dundalk First Responders are looking to get back to work so they can continue to provide a crucial service for the people of Dundalk. Dundalk First Responders are locally trained volunteers who work with the ambulance service to attend cases locally of cardiac arrest, chest pain or strokes. Because the volunteers live locally they are able to ar-

rive on the scene quickly and perform critical interventions where lives can be saved and disabilities reduced.

According to Barry Hennessy who is a spokesperson for the Dundalk branch of the local responders the group are looking to get going again after been shut down for over a year because of the pandemic.

However, more volunteers are needed and Barry has called for anybody

interested to get in contact and get fully trained up so that they can play a vital role in their communities.

“Due to the Covid pandemic Dundalk Cardiac First Responders have been shut down for well over a year. We are now looking at providing a full service to Dundalk as soon as possible,” explained Barry.

“We are now calling for willing volunteers to act as responders and to

fill board places as soon as possible. Full training and certification is provided. These are fully voluntary positions with as much or little time as you have spare or wish to give.

Anthony welcomes Hollywood stars to town

DUNDALK train station was a hive of activity on Friday last as filming of the sequel to the Disney film Enchanted took place there.

The production team arrived in town last week and some scenes were filmed at Clarke’s train station on Friday,

May 28.

According to Station Master Anthony Monaghan the crew were very professional and security was very tight.

“All of the staff had to be Covid-tested to be allowed on-site. It went well and the man Mr (Patrick) Dempsey was

around,” he said.

“It was very busy as we had to juggle everything with the trains running. They were very protective of the site.

“It takes a bit of doing to get a five second shot. There was great excitement about the

place. We closed off part of the carpark to accommodate them.”

Anthony added: “A lot of people were coming up to have a look. It was causing traffic jams so we had to politely move them on.”

Dundalk is among a number of locations

being used for filming including Dublin city, Greystones and Enniskerry.

Disenchanted is a live action/animated musical romantic comedy starring Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams. It is the sequel to the 2007 hit, Enchanted.

Lions club continue to work hard despite challenges

DUNDALK Lions Club President David Larkin has spoken about the invaluable charity work carried out by the organisation.

He said that despite facing many challenges, the Dundalk Lions Club gave a number of donations to various groups during lockdown.

“Every charity was restricted in what they could do last year. It’s been a difficult year for charities,” said David.

“We had a lot of plans. Things we were going to do included having a poker classic at the Lisdoo.

“It was all arranged and tickets had been sold for March 27, 2020 – one week after lockdown so it didn’t go ahead.”

David added: “It will be 2022 before such things are possible again.

“One project we are working on is called Message in a Bottle. The idea is that a small sheet of paper - containing the medical requirements of an elderly person - is placed in a bottle and put in the fridge in their home.

“If there was ever a medical emergency, the services could check the sheet of paper and know the person’s medical background.”

The Dundalk Grammar School TY Young Social Innovators (YSI) Team this year comprised 8 students, and their Project was called PLAN’T GET ENOUGH COMPOST. Among many experiences in what was a challenging year for them, they were interviewed on various radio stations, secured €300 on the YSI Dragon’s Den, produced a Speak-out video, produced a Project Report, and visited many classes to talk about their Project. They were shortlisted for the overall YSI National Awards,

dConnect Digital Health Innovation Launch Last Tuesday Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) officially launched dConnect, a digital health innovation hub based in DkIT’s Regional Development Centre. dConnect is Ireland’s first dedicated digital health innovation hub and is committed to driving collaboration in the burgeoning sector of digital health. The new innovation hub which has been funded by Enterprise Ireland and a group of regional partners aims to build a bridge between business, the healthcare sector, universities and society.

Committed to the creation of a robust Irish Digital Health cluster, dConnect will support start-ups, scale-ups, and SMEs moving into the healthcare space, support commercialization of research and provide larger businesses and investors with access to innovation.
