The community of Dundalk have been lauded for their generosity towards those less fortunate over the Christmas period following a huge number of fundraisers and charitable collections over the holiday period.

From the annual busk for the Simon community to a group of Dundalk supporters raising €2000 for local charities and many more in between the people of Dundalk have once again shown they are willing to go that

extra yard for those in need at a time that is often categorised by excess and greed.

There have also been wonderful gestures from businesses and school children with the Sitar Restaurant in Carlingford offering free Christmas dinners on Christmas Day and school children all over town making up shoeboxes full of gifts and essential toiletries for disadvantaged children across the globe, while Dowdallshill GFC marked the 60th anniversary of their Christmas Morning See page 2

Conor Hughes St Stephen’s Day fundraiser a success

The annual Crosscause fundraiser on Blackrock beach once again proved to be a huge success with Conor Hughes and company raising €5400 on the day. All proceeds will go to to-

wards a new eye treatment clinic in Ghana which Crosscause hope to open within the next twelve months.

Conor’s charity Crosscause has been helping the people of Romania, Moldova and Ghana for over ten years

and his St Stephen’s Day get together is the charity’s main fundraiser each year. Over the years Conor antics have become the stuff of legend and have seen him dress up as Charlie Chaplin, a bee, Thierry Henry’s hand as well as hosting his own version of The Gathering (which he labelled The Scattering) all in an effort to raise money for Crosscause.

This year’s event was unable to go ahead on St Stephen’s Day due to very poor weather conditions but undeterred Conor arranged for the fundraiser to go ahead the following day on Blackrock beach.

This year’s theme involved penguins, Don-

ald Trump and icecaps all of which loosely fell under the umbrella of raising awareness about global warming. There were ten penguin suits given out on the day who all jumped aboard the floating icecap to surround Conor who was dressed as Donald Trump.

Speaking after the successful event Conor thanked everybody for coming out and helping raise over €5000 for the crosscause charity.

“We’ve been doing this fundraiser for many years now on Blackrock beach and once again the people have come out to support us which we are very grateful for.

Unfortunately we were unable to go ahead with

it on St Stephen’s Day due to the weather but with the power of social media nowadays it was pretty easy to let people know that we were going to have it the next day instead.

“We wanted to have a little bit of fun with the global warming theme and we had people running around in penguin suits which was good fun. This year we had our fundraiser for our project in Ghana where we hope to open up an eye clinic later this year.

The Tie Wrap Gang gather outside Goldstar Jewellers to present four local charities with a cheque for €500 each

Tie wrap gang raise money for four local charities

A group of Dundalk FC supporters who call themselves the ‘Tie Wrap Gang’ presented four local charities with cheques for €500 last week outside Goldstar Jewellers on the Demesne. The group of eighteen supporters volunteer their services and tidy Oriel Park ahead of each game which is where they got their name from.

Former owner of the club Paul Browne is a member of the group who were formed in 2017 and explained how the idea to raise money for local charities began.

“We formed the ‘Tie Wrap Gang’ in September 2017 when a group of us decided to go down to an away game in Cork on the train. Unfortunately, there was a train strike that weekend so we organised a bus instead and from that game on we’ve made it a regular thing. Last year we went to every single away league and cup game bar one. On the bus journey we do a goal time competition and any profits we make we keep un-

til the end of the year before giving some money to local charities. Last year we donated money to the Maria Goretti Foundation and this year we decided to give out four cheques of €500 to North Louth Hospice, SNAP Louth, The Birches Alzheimer Day Care Centre and Dundalk Dog Rescue.

“We also raised a considerable amount of money by putting Patrick Hoban’s jersey from the game where he scored four goals against Bohs in the EA Cup. That money went to the Maria Goretti Foundation and we were delighted to help them out also,” stated Paul.

“We are a family-oriented group of supporters who love the club and we meet up every Saturday morning in Ma Brady’s for a ‘healthy breakfast’ where we make proposal for potential fundraisers for next season. It’s a great group to be a part of and we look forward to supporting the team and raising more money for local charities in 2020,” he added.

Funding for visual artists’ studio

The Arts Council today announced the Louth recipient of the 2020 Visual Artists Workspace Scheme.

The scheme offers grants, up to a maximum of €40,000, towards the running costs of visual artists’ workspaces. It aims to support sustainable artists’ workspaces throughout the country to provide the best possible working environment.

The Creative Spark Print Studio in Louth, as well as studios in Galway, Cork, Clare, Dublin, Limerick, Mayo and Waterford, will receive grants this year totalling €260,000 (€8,000 for Louth studio) to allow them to maintain vital facilities and provisions for visual artists.

Arts Council Director, Orlaith McBride, said: “The Visual Artists Workspace Scheme is a very significant award for the Arts Council. It provides artists around the country with essential access to space and equipment, enabling the production of work and the continued development of artistic practice.”

In 2020, 18 studios/workspaces will be awarded funding, supporting facilities for 693 individual practicing visual artists across Ireland.

Credit Union makes dreams come true

Dundalk Credit Union underlined its position at the centre of the local community by helping Christmas wishes come true for a local family.

On Friday December 20 at 5.15am, Niamh Muckian together with her husband Paul and their two daughters Shauna and Katie from Dundalk, touched down in Dublin airport. The family who have lived in Canada for over seven years were the lucky winners of the “Dundalk Credit Union C’mon Home to the Town for Christmas Competition”.

Niamh’s parents Terry and Lillie Dullaghan entered their daughter Niamh and her family into the Dundalk Credit Union Competition to fly someone special home for Christmas. It has been four years since they celebrated Christmas at home and naturally they were all delighted to be together for Christmas, with Billy Doyle CEO Dundalk Credit Union explaining how important it was to help out.

“Christmas is a very special time to enjoy with all of your loved ones. We are thrilled for Terry and Lillie and of course

for Niamh, Paul and family. We hope they had the most wonderful Christmas at home in Dundalk,” explained Billy.

After the family arrived home to Dundalk, Niamh’s mother Lillie posted a message on Facebook saying: “A massive thank you to all the people who phoned, texted, emailed and called to wish the family well.

Thank you to Dundalk Credit Union and the staff members who were at the airport before 4.30am to help us welcome Niamh, Paul, Shauna and Katie.

They are a marvellous team.”

A team led by iCRAG, the SFI Research Centre for Applied Geosciences based at University College Dublin, has been awarded government funding to research suitable locations

for new offshore wind farms in the Irish sea. The funding announcement was made by the Minister for Communications, Environment and Climate Action, Richard Bruton TD, at the

inaugural National Energy Research and Policy conference in Dublin. The iCRAG team will be assessing seabed suitability for offshore wind farms in the Louth/Meath coastal area.

Call to increase funding for addiction services Sinn Féin Councillor and Chairperson of Louth Drug and Alcohol Forum, Ruairí Ó Murchú, has written to the Minister of State for Drugs, Catherine Byrne, to request a meeting with her and also with the Ministers for Health and Justice.

Councillor Ó Murchú pointed out that across Louth there are a huge number of families and individuals whose lives are being destroyed by drugs.

“At the last meeting of Louth Drug and Alcohol Forum a number of associated groups stated serious shortfalls in funding and that this is having a negative impact on service delivery.

Forum members decided that we need to meet with the Minister to put these points directly to her.

“At a meeting of the North East Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force, I learned that in 2007 funding was approximately €1.4 mil-

lion. In the past year only €900,000 was allocated. This is despite an exponential growth in demand for these services, coupled with increases in rent and other operational costs.

“I have written to the Minister of State Catherine Byrne, to outline how any further reduction in addiction services will have severe negative impacts on communities across Louth. The prevalence of drugs in our communities is at a higher level than ever before, however government policy and funding has not kept pace with the needs of addiction services,” explained Cllr Ó Murchú.

“At a recent Joint Policing Committee meeting in Dundalk, the Garda Chief Superintendent for Louth Christopher Mangan, stated that there is a decreasing government focus on demand reduction and a severe lack of drug treatment rehabilitation services for people who want to

kick their addictions.

“In Louth we have a very successful drugs court in operation.

However a key component of its success is the availability of services to those who come before this court.

“The inability of service providers to deliver services will have a hugely negative impact on communities in terms of crime levels, antisocial behaviour and intimidation by drugs gangs.

“A recent report from the EU Drugs Agency and Europol found that violence and intimidation by drug gangs has severely affected communities in Ireland and had major impacts on individuals, families, communities and the functioning of local services and agencies.

“It is not enough for the Government to register huge concern when report after report indicates that this is a worsening problem. It is time that serious fo-

The AGMs of Dundalk Golf Club and the Men’s Section were held on December 16 and both meetings attracted a large attendance of members.

Following last month’s EGM, there are now new structures in place within the club and new Head of Operations, John O’Sullivan, was introduced to members at the Club AGM. The following have been elected to the new Executive Committee - Chair: Richard Blackmore, Captain: Trevor Giff, Lady Captain: Pauline Campbell, Club Secretary: Briege Renaghan, Club Treasurer: Noel Reid; Head of Course: Eoin Doohan; Head of Facilities and Services: Ultan Herr; Head of Membership and Social: Mary Hession; Head of Marketing and Communications: Gerry McDermott.

Tech recruiters welcomed at DkIT computing careers event All of the heavy hitters from the world of IT attended DkIT before Christmas to participate in a ‘Pitch and Meet’ careers event for computing students and graduates.

The event, which was led by the institute’s Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Student Chapter in collaboration with the Careers & Employability office and the Computing Departments at DkIT, included participation from Google, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, First Derivatives, Prometric, TrustToken, Verizon Connect, SyncIT and Intact.

As part of the event, third and fourth year computing students had the opportunity to present to industry representatives and showcase their practical skills and attributes. Students heard from a variety employers about career opportunities in the sector, they learned more about the interview process and received insider tips in relation to application processes.

Most importantly, students had the opportunity to expand their networks by interacting with professionals within the IT sector and discuss current and future opportunities with their companies.

Lawless, Head of Department of Computing Science and Mathematics at DkIT reflected on the value of the event to DkIT. “Research indicates that by next year there will be a demand for almost 6.3 million IT professionals in the EU. However, it is crucially important that students are aware of exactly what opportunities are available and that they understand how to match their skills, interests and personalities to these roles. Community Restorative Justice’s, Muirhevnamor Peace Project held their certificate presentation to the young people who recently completed the Young Leaders award training programme on Friday November 29. The young people were part of the Muirhevnamor Young People’s Training Imitative.

An awards day was held in Muirhevnamor Community Centre to celebrate the achievement of the ten young people who successfully com-

pleted the prestigious International Leadership and Management – Young Leaders Programme, designed and delivered by Roisin Kelly of VAK Consultancy.

Project Co-ordinator Kevin Meenan praised the dedication and commitment of these great students who are a credit to their communities.

Mr. Meenan went on to thank all those who saw the benefit of and supported this initiative. He said “this Muirhevnamor Peace Programme

provides opportunities for our young people, promotes good relations and inclusivity between neighbouring communities”.

Dundalk FC community officer, Liam Burns, was on hand to present the certificates. Speaking at the event he said: “I would just like to say congratulations to all of the pupils for getting their awards today. I know awards aren’t handed out easily so they must have put a lot of effort and hard work into

them, so I commend them all on that.

Also congratulating the young people was CRJ’s Ewan Morgan, praised their work and their achievements stating “no doubt our future is safe in the hands of these very capable young people”.

He also thanked Louth County Council for the foresight in developing this type of unique project, which encourages collaborative participations throughout Louth and further afield.

Generous Dundalk people help the local homeless Eugene Garvey, who co-ordinated a shoe box appeal, has said he was overwhelmed at the generosity of the people of Dundalk and surrounding areas for his recent shoebox appeal to help the homeless.

“When we first send out the appeal I was hoping to get around 100 shoeboxes and felt that would have been a good result. Bearing in mind the very deserving charities that are all vying for funds at this time of year, not to mention the various shoe box appeals out there, I was overwhelmed to receive over 500 shoeboxes for the homeless. Each box came from a place of love, generosity of spirit and compassion.”

At the beginning of the appeal, Mr Garvey had aimed to have three charities benefit. (Newry Help the Homeless, Simon Community and Dundalk Soup Kitchen).

However, due to the amazing response, he was able to include St Patrick’s Soup Kitchen, SVP, Save our Home-

Animal funding

Funding of €23,000 has been awarded to local animal welfare organisations, according to Fine Gael Councillor John McGahon.

“This funding will contribute to the protection of surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals. Louth SPCA do great work and I am thrilled to see funding made available to help this excellent work to continue,“ stated Cllr McGahon.

The CEO of humanitarian aid agency GOAL, Siobhan Walsh, has thanked the hundreds of people from County Louth who took time out to support the most vulnerable in our world by taking part in a GOAL Mile over the Christmas period.

Crowds turned out to walk, run or jog a mile at Dunleer AC track and Dundalk DKIT on Christmas Day and St. Feichins GAA Grounds in Beaulieu and Glenmore AC on St. Stephens Day. Now in its 38th year, the GOAL Mile is one of Ireland’s largest and longest-running annual fundraising events. It is steeped in tradition for people who

build in a GOAL Mile as part of their Christmas routine. This year over 140 GOAL Miles were organised all over Ireland.

Siobhan Walsh said: “A huge thanks to GOAL Mile organisers in Louth and around Ireland for their support this year. Millions of euros have been raised to support GOAL’s work in the developing world since the first GOAL Mile was staged in 1982.The widespread support of the people of Ireland for the GOAL Mile embodies the true spirit of Christmas. I would like to thank the thousands of people who started their Christmas day taking action to support others.”

Research has shown consistently that multi-disciplinary education and exercise-based programmes have more success in achieving a healthier lifestyle compared to uni-disciplinary programmes. Raymond Smith, Senior Physiotherapist in Primary explains how the programme works: “The aim of the programme is to give people the tools to allow them to take control of their health and wellbeing.

ponents: periodic assessments carried out by members of the team: a six week education programme lasting two hours per week covering topics such as; making healthy food choices, benefits of exercise including promotion of the national guidelines on exercise, goal setting, bone health management and an exercise programme developed and supervised by physiotherapists once per week which the clients are encouraged to attend.”

Dundalk Musical Society returns with Aladdin

Dundalk Musical Society along with their principal sponsor CuChullain Credit Union are delighted to announce that booking is now well under way for their annual pantomime which this year is the all-time favourite “Aladdin”. Ticket sales have got off to a flying start with many of the weekend performances already sold out. This is a show you really do not want to miss so grab your tickets before they are all gone.

Last year marked a very special year for the Society, securing the rights to and performing the wonderful “Chitty

Chitty, Bang Bang” this hard working crew are preparing to tread the boards once again.

The show opens in An Tain Arts Centre (Town Hall Dundalk) on Monday January 6 until Sunday 12 at 7.30pm nightly with matinees on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 at 2.30pm.

Featuring an allsinging, all-dancing chorus of one hundred local children and young adults, whose spectacular routines and dazzling costumes are sure to enchant the young and the young at heart. Under the careful curation of Geraldine Pender who returns to her role of Director and

Yasmina Aniss as Choreographer, this super talented pair have been putting the cast and chorus through their paces for the past two months to make sure the Society produce a spectacular pantomime which they have now become renowned for.

This timeless classic is centred on the handsome pauper Aladdin played by Lucy Robinson.

Blackrock Tidy Town’s will again this year be running a free Christmas tree recycling event for Blackrock and Haggardstown areas in the Blackrock Community Centre on January 11. Those wishing to avail of the service can deliver the trees to the Community Centre beginning in the morning of January 11 and if transport is an issue there will be a free collection service for the Blackrock, Haggardstown areas on the day of the shredding.

Six technology companies, all clients of the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) in Louth, have just returned from Berlin where they were part of the InnovateAccelerate Europe Programme, a new cross-border initiative providing specialist support to help local companies seeking to expand into new markets.

Germany is Europe’s largest economy and is Ireland’s second largest market for services exports as well as Ireland’s fourth largest market for merchandise exports.

Thomas McEvoy, Head of Enterprise, LEO Louth said that given the backdrop of Brexit, it was opportune for a NorthSouth group to work together to explore new markets in Europe.

“The opportunity Europe presents is very much alive and can help win business for Louth companies. We want our clients to extend their reach beyond local markets and to explore overseas markets,” he stated.

The InnovateAccelerate Europe programme is a pilot designed to complement the work of LEO Louth. On this, the inaugural business opportunity trip, LEO Louth clients had a full day of individual tailored support to help them identify new business collaboration opportunities.

They also had training in advance of a day of one-to-one meetings with German companies. The bilateral meetings took place at the Aldershof

Technology Park which is the largest technology park and incubation centre in Berlin.

The LEO Louth clients travelled with representatives of 14 other businesses who were clients of either LEO Meath or of the Newry and Mourne Enterprise Agency (NMEA).

In the New Year all the participating owner managers will continue to work with their InnovateAccelerate Europe mentor to produce a Business Opportunity Plan.

The Louth companies on the four day trip from December 3 to 6 were Ambient Displays Ltd, ECC Design & Engineering Ltd, Sixtech, Unicorn Magic ltd, Aquafuel and Project Engineering.

Ardee Concert Band in festive mood Ardee Concert Band had a fabulous night on Friday December 13 with over 130 musicians taking to the Bohemian Centre Stage throughout the festive music making night.

Their national titlewinning senior band were first to the stage under the Baton of newly appointed conductor Ronan O’Reilly for a taster of what was to come later on in the night. Jenny Satelle, a member of the senior band directed the Recorder group through two pieces only three months after they joined the band and began learning how to read music and play their instrument.

Next the Junior band who again have only been together for three months gave an outstanding performance with their conductor and senior band member Jane Healy. The Ardee Intermezzo Ensemble gave a finale performance to the first half of the show with Kevin Reilly at the helm.

The senior band once again took to the stage for the second half of the show. After a standing ovation the band played the audience out to the festive favourite Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson. Everyone left the Bohemian Centre with a smile on the face and a beat at the feet.

Archers continue fine form The Irish Indoor Open was hosted by CúChulainn Archers over the weekend at Kingscourt with over 100 archers travelling the length and breadth of the country to join the home team who made up 25 of the archers present.

Recurve (Olympic style) archers took up the shooting line on Saturday. Michelle Brohan came fifth in the ladies section after making it to the quarter finals.

Austin Tobin was defeated in the first H2H but qualified to shoot in the team event with Michelle where they won Bronze.

Sunday was open to Compound and Barebow archers and in Female barebow, Ann Marie Murray and Claudia Heinze shot into the quarter finals before finishing fourth and sixth.

In men’s barebow, James Moloney, who travelled from Mayo for his first indoor event, won Gold.

Ann Marie and James joined together for the mixed team and bought home Gold.

Sinn Féin councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has introduced a motion at Louth County Council’s December meeting calling for up to 10 days paid leave for people suffering domestic abuse.

Speaking following the meeting which Councillor Ó Murchú explained the reasons behind the motion.

“Sinn Féin recently introduced legislation to provide for a statutory entitlement to domestic violence paid leave.

“This time off is necessary so that people can access legal, medical and court services “It also provides time to source alternative accommodation – which is increasingly difficult in the current housing crisis,” he explained.

“A recent study carried out by Tusla and homeless charity Good Shepherd Cork found that women who left their homes because of violence were often unable to find alternative accommodation, and were forced to return to violent abusers.

“Domestic violence continues to be under-reported due to stigma, shame and fear.

“One in five women will experience violence in their own home, and forty-one per cent of Irish women know someone in their circle of family or friends who have experienced intimate partner violence.

“Domestic violence also follows victims into the workplace.

Co-workers may be aware that a colleague is being abused, but without a workplace policy, are unsure how best to support them,” continued Cllr Ó Murchú.

“Managers need guidance on how to recognise the signs of domestic abuse and how to respond to a staff member’s disclosure.

“Domestic Abuse is a problem across our community and the solutions will involve the whole of our society. This legislation is one significant move in the right direction and we need to ensure it becomes law as soon as possible.

“I am pleased that Louth County Council has supported this important motion today,” he concluded.

Christmas gesture The owner of Sitar restaurant in Carlingford who offered free Christmas meals for those in need on Christmas day intends to do so on an annual basis.

Vikram Singh who owns and runs the Sitar restaurant extended an offer for free food and company for anybody who wanted it just before Christmas. Having grown up in a poor village in India Vikram knew of the struggles that many people have and now that he has established his business in Carlingford he opened his doors for anybody in need for three hours on Christmas day.

According to Vikram he welcomed around twenty people into his restaurant on the day and will now make this an annual event.

“We were delighted to welcome in about twenty people on Christmas Day with the majority

of them sitting down in the restaurant for their dinner.

“There was an option to take away as well but most people stayed and we had a lovely afternoon. Some people came because they could not afford to have a dinner and some came because they had nobody to share Christmas with.

“There were no questions asked and everybody that came seemed to enjoy themselves.

We were very happy to have them and it is my intention to do this every year from now on. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s one person or one hundred who come through the doors.

“All I want to do is brighten up somebody’s day and give a little back to the local community who have been so good to both me and my family,” stated Vikra

Success for local karate club Local club, Dundalk Karate were making headlines yet again at the Annual Karate Ireland Open National Championships which were held in the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus, Abbotstown, Dublin.

With over 700 entries and with clubs from all over Ireland in attendance, this local club showed that they may be small in number, but definitely big on determination and talent.

First to the tatami matts was Gemma Kelledy, who claimed a Gold Medal.

Following in quick sucession was fellow Junior Dundalk Karate members Sofia Comiskey,

Emily Kelledy, Ivan Simutkins and Jacob Villiusis who were unfortunate this time round in their Kata categories but with things hotting up as Kumite for all Junior competitors.

With numerous boys of similar age and experience it ended with Jacob being unlucky in this event, but Ivan being declared Champion and receiving a Gold medal for all his hard work.

Following the boy’s success, Emily Kelledy took to the floor and earned a Bronze medal for all her hard work.

Cadets and Senior competitors followed after lunch and

although Catherine Marcus was unlucky not to get a medal, this did not hold local girl Marcus back in her determination during her Kumite category which resulted in a Bronze medal.

Afterwards Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Marcus said, “This year Karate Ireland held their largest National Championships to date, and to see Dundalk Karate holding their own on the matts, was a very proud moment for Dundalk Karate. Everyone has trained and come together as a Team which would make any Coach proud.

Congratulations to each member of this fantastic team.”

The IPACycle organised a charity cycle from Aiken Barracks to the Four Seasons Hotel in Carlingford to raise funds in aid of St Patricks Soup Kitchen. The Four Seasons Hotel provided refreshments free to the cyclists and the 27 Inf.Bn. provided a hot meal on their return to Aiken Barracks.

The cycle run was run in conjunction with the Michael Mc Neela Branch ONE. The cycle run raised €650 for the soup kitchen.

Maintenance work is to take place on Tallanstown water supply next week

Irish Water in partnership with Louth County Council advises that ice-pigging scheduled to take place on 17 and 18 December 2019 has been postponed until the week commencing January 6, 2020. Ice pigging is an innovative technique in which an ice slush is pumped into a water main and forced along the inside to clean the pipe by removing sediment and other unwanted deposits. There has been an issue with the production of the ice slush in the UK meaning that the specialist contractor is unable to carry out the ice-pigging until the new year.

Irish Water, in partnership with Louth County Council has already carried out works at the plant which made it possible for the Boil Water Notice to be lifted for the majority of customers impacted by the Boil Water Notice.

Following extensive monitoring of the plant and network Irish Water can confirm that adequate chlorine levels are being maintained consistently at all locations with the exception of the

specific section of the network where ice-pigging is required It is necessary that chlorine is present at adequate levels in drinking water to ensure that the water remains disinfected until it gets to the taps in people’s homes and businesses.

The programme of ice-pigging should help maintain adequate levels of chlorine in the watermain. Irish Water and Louth County Council regrets the inconvenience caused by the delay in ice-pigging.

The Boil Water Notice which has been in place since 30 July, 2019 remains in place for approximately 600 customers in Tallanstown village.

The Boil Water Notice remains in place in the areas highlighted red in the map provided, including the following locations; Chestnut Grove; Castle view; Rathbrist cottages; Glyde road; Tallansfield manor; Glyde view and Tullarsfield. Irish Water’s drinking water and operational experts will continue to work with Louth County Council on

the issue and will consult with the Health Service Executive to lift the Boil Water Notice for those remaining on the notice as quickly and as safely as possible.

Irish Water acknowledges and again sincerely apologises for the impact and inconvenience caused by this Boil Water Notice to homes and businesses in the Tallanstown area. We wish to thank the community for their ongoing patience and cooperation while we work to resolve this issue for those remaining on the Boil Water Notice.

One-in-six motorists taking hungover driving risk AA Ireland has issued a warning to motorists of the danger of driving the morning after a night out, after a recent survey by the organisation found a significant number of motorists have driven while hungover and unsure of whether they were still over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

According to a recent AA Car Insurance survey of over 6,000 Irish motorists, 9.41% of respondents admitted that on one occasion in the past year they had driven the day after a night out, while possibly still over the legal blood-alcohol limit. Meanwhile, a further 5.64% admitted to taking this risk on up to 5 occasions, while 0.82% admitted to doing so on more than 5 occasions in 2019.

With the Christmas and New Year period in mind, the AA is urging motorists to avoid getting behind the wheel if there is a risk they may still be over the limit.

The best advice, according to the motoring organisation, is to avoid driving if you still feel hungover after a night out.

“When we speak about drinkdriving, most people will assume that we’re only talking about the person who stumbles out of a put

at half 3 in the morning, falls into their car and takes a stupid risk which puts the lives of other road users in danger. However, there is another aspect to drink-driving, which is the potential danger posed by people who think that after a few hours sleep and a strong coffee they will magically be ready and able to drive,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “You have many people who will do the right thing and get a taxi home after a night out, but then turn around just a few hours later and get behind the wheel of a car without thinking of the fact that they could still be over the limit.”

“Quite often people believe that the idea that it takes the body an hour to process a unit of alcohol is a hard and fast rule, but it’s not that clear cut. Generally speaking, if you still have a pounding head and you still feel hungover, then there is a strong likelihood that you may still be over the limit and you shouldn’t be getting behind the wheel.”

The survey also found that almost 1 in 12 drivers have been involved in a near miss or a collision involving a driver who they

knew or suspected to be over the legal limit.

When asked if they had ever been involved in a near miss or accident involving a drink-driver, 3.48% of respondents to the AA’s survey reported being involved in at least one such incident in the past 12 months. Meanwhile, a further 3.05% of respondents stated that they had had a run-in with a drink-driver at some point in their driving history but not within the last year.

“Ultimately the impact of alcohol on your ability to carry out tasks such as driving has been established beyond all doubt, and the only dissenting voices come from those with a vested interest in the sale of alcohol. Getting behind the wheel while you are over the limit not only increases your own risk of being involved in an accident, but increases the danger that you pose to other road users who happen to be on the road at the same time,” Faughnan added.

“Enjoy the festive period by all means, but if you are choosing to drink as part of your celebrations then leave the car keys at home and allow plenty of recovery time the morning after.”
