Part of town’s history comes crashing down

There was heartbreak across Dundalk last week when the handball alleys that have stood proudly at the entrance of St Mary’s College for many years were demolished.

Among those lamenting the loss of a piece of the town’s history was Hannah Finnegan, who has lived on St Mary’s Road overlooking the courts for 21 years. She was extremely saddened by the occasion having grown up in a family of handball players: “I’m very upset to see the alleys being knocked down.

There is just so much heritage and history attached to them. I don’t understand how anyone could knock down something so old and Hannah Finnegan with her grand-daughter Hazel outside the Marist.

Give Louth a fair tourism chance

By Paul Byrne Failte Ireland have once again emphasised that Co. Louth will be an integral part of their ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ campaign which will be rolled out next summer to try and build on the wealth of historical and cultural assets in the east of Ireland.

Louth had originally been omitted from an interactive map during the launch for ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ back in April leading to widespread shock and disappointment from many people in the Wee County. An apology to all in Co. Louth was quickly released by Paul Keeley, Director of Business Development in Failte Ireland.

Sydney Rose Ciara Rafferty recalls her Greenore roots

Having endured something of a drought in recent years at the Rose of Tralee festival, Louth will be well represented in 2015 when the festival kicks off next month.

Louth Rose Jenny Hanlon became the first Wee County representative to make it to Tralee in three years when she came through the heats in Portlaoise last month and she will be joined in the Dome by Sydney Rose Ciara Rafferty who has strong local connections.

Ciara was born in Port Macquarie just north of Sydney in New South Wales in 1989 three years after her dad John, mother Joan and siblings Ann, Sean and Rhona emigrated from Ireland in search of a new life.

John is originally from Greenore and according to Ciara she has

plenty of wonderful memories of the locality from numerous trips ‘back home’ down through the years.

“I have returned to Ireland many times over the years to visit the family, especially my granny and granddad. Dad is from Greenore and mam is from Boyle in Roscommon so those two

places in particular are special to me. For me, Carlingford and Lough Key Forest Park (Boyle) are the two most beautiful places in the world!”, said Ciara.

“My main memories of Greenore are of my Granny Barbara Rafferty. She was absolutely gorgeous – she loved to tell us stories

and when my siblings lived in Ireland during their gap years and different periods of their life – they would always catch the train down to Dundalk and Granny would have a massive feed already prepared. I also spent a lot of my time in Greenore with my Aunty Laurena”, she explained.

Ciara who currently works as a nurse in St Vincent’s Private hospital in Sydney was initially hesitant to enter the Rose competition but after seeing how much a friend enjoyed the experience last year she decided to go for it and was shocked and delighted when she was picked to be the Sydney Rose.

“I am so glad I gave it a shot and it was just fantastic. I have made over 30 new friends from all different ages/ demographics because of this experience.

“I was really shocked to get through because I was up against incredible young women – who remain good friends and fantastic support.” ,explained Ciara.

“The Rose of Tralee has really brought my family together because we are getting all the cousins together from Sligo, Dublin, Galway etc! My brother Sean Rafferty is the new father of five-month old twins so he can’t fly over - he is devastated but my two sisters who live in London and Paris are flying over with their families. I am so excited about coming back to Ireland. This is beyond anything I could have ever imagined”, added Ciara.

Speaking on Friday Failte Ireland’s head of communications Alex Connolly once again emphasised that Louth would play a major role in ‘Ireland’s Ancient Way’.

“I would once again like to say that Louth is without doubt a huge part of what we are doing with this initiative.

How could you not have somewhere as beautiful as say Carlingford in ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’.

We have been meeting with local stakeholders over the last couple of months and we’ve recently invited people to apply for a grant scheme which will help to fund improvements to a number of key sites in the area. The map fiasco was unfortunate but Louth were always going to be a part of this. Our plan is to roll it out next summer and I promise that Louth will feature very prominently”, stated Alex.

Fitzer back after clear-the-air talks

Increase in asylum applications in Ireland

LOUTH TD Peter Fitzpatrick has confirmed that he will after all be seeking the Fine Gael nomination for the next General Election after clear-the-air talks with the party chiefs.

The Dundalk man had declared last week that he would not be putting his name forward at the convention on July 9, but he is now very much back in the fold, and determined to ensure that the party retains its

two deputies..

“The difficulty I had was that they were not clear on the party strategy. I had tried to have a meeting before the convention, and even made attempts to have it put back.

“My view is that it took 60 years to get two seats in Louth and it is important that we retain two. To do that we needed a strategy put in place”, explained Mr Fitzpatrick who

expressed his satisfaction that the situation has been resolved in such a manner.

“People will say, ‘look at Fitzpatrick doing a u-turn’. I don’t feel I’ve done a u-turn.

I feel I’ve done myself justice.

I wanted to wait and make the right decision for myself, for my constituents and for my family.

“What really shocked me was the amount of people who

have contacted me over the last number of days,” he said.

“I know the next General Election is going to be tough but we have to work hard to retain out two TDs”, Peter explained.

It is reported that party chiefs had taken responsibility for the events that led to the former Louth footballer and manager to withdraw his name from the selection convention.

Ireland received 625 first time applications for asylum in the first quarter of 2015, compared to 455 in the fourth quarter of 2014, an increase of almost 40%, according to figures released by Eurostat today. 42% of these asylum applicants were from Pakistan, 7% were from Nigeria, while 6% were from Albania.

At EU level, there were 185,000 first time requests for asylum in the first quarter of 2015, almost stable compared with the last quarter of 2014 but up by 86% compared with the first quarter of 2014. Kosovars (26%) represented the main citizenship of first time asylum applicants in the EU over the first quarter of 2015, ahead of Syrians (16%) and Afghans (7%).

During the first quarter of 2015, the highest numbers of first time applicants were registered in Germany (73,100 first time applicants, or 40% of total first time applicants in the EU) and Hungary (32,800, or 18%).

They were followed at a distance by Italy (15,200, or 8%), France (14,800, or 8%), Sweden (11,400, or 6%), Austria (9,700, or 5%) and the United Kingdom (7,300 or 4%).

Louth County Council is embarking on a process of public consultation with the ‘Have Your Say’ Survey which is open for submissions from Friday June 26. The survey is an invitation to the public to comment and contribute to the budgetary process for 2016.

Football fans from across the country have celebrating the 25th anniversary of Ireland’s exploits in Italia 90. One fan who made the trip was CONOR WATERS along with his dad, Brendan, and brother Neil, and he looks back on the trip of a lifetime.

Remembering trip of a lifetime to Italia 90 I was only 10 at the time, but still have great memories of our trip. We had previously been to Germany for the Euros in 1988 and had been to all qualifiers at Lansdowne, so when that win in Malta sealed our qualification for the World Cup in Italy my Dad, got planning straight away.

Myself, my brother Neil (13) and my Dad packed our rucksacks and headed off for Sicily a few days after the first match against England in Sardinia. We were on an open ended plane ticket, and ended up staying right up until the final, which we managed to get tickets for. We

spent time in Palermo for the Egypt and Holland matches, took a trip to Naples to visit some extended relatives, then

made our way to Genoa.

All the mainland travel was done on the trains, where we often slept on board or on platforms. I

seem to remember every city we visited had some Irish supporters present.

No matter where, there was always an Irish flag

hanging out of a hotel room window, or large groups of green jerseys swelling out of bars and restaurants.

Having secured tickets to the last 16 match against Romania - thanks to a detour to the hotel where the Irish team were staying - we were bursting with excitement.

I remember my Dad constantly bumping into people he knew from Dundalk, who had decided to make a last minute trip over - some of them only booked one way flights. They would worry about the return trip later.

When it came to the

match itself, we were positioned behind the goals, the opposite end to where the penalties took place. I was quite small for a 10 year old, so my dad had me on his shoulders for the shoot out. It dawned on me as the tension grew with each kick, that I might be in a somewhat precarious position.

By the time Bonner saved Timofte’s effort, I was barely still clinging on. And when the nation held its breath and David O’Leary cooly dispatched the winning penalty, it was bedlam. It felt like a minor earthquake had hit the stadium, as every single Irish per-

son in the ground went ballistic. I was thrown backwards from the celebrations and landed in the arms of a fellow supporter where we continued celebrating. The good feeling seemed to carry on forever. It was a carnival atmosphere wherever we went after that, parties and celebrations in every bar and restaurant. It was as if the Irish had taken over Italy. And even though we were knocked out by the hosts in Rome, nothing could take away from the experience.

It was an era of great Irish success on the pitch.

And probably a era that won’t be replicated.

Man told Gardai he was going to drive home A man who had been drinking told Gardai he was going to drive home when they found him in his car at 3pm.

qualified from driving for three years after pleading guilty to a charge of drink driving.

Dundalk District Court heard that on November 14 last year Gardai came across the defend-

ant in the driver seat of his car with the engine running.

A Garda spoke to the driver and he stated that he was going to drive home.

There was a strong smell of

alcohol while Gardai also discovered bottles of alcoholic drink in the car.

Mr Crawley was taken to the station where a breath sample showed he was over the limit.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the 54-year-old defendant is currently not driving.

Judge Flann Brennan also imposed a €300 fine.

Hannah reminisced about times spent in the handball alleys with her family: “When the kids were younger they used to play tennis whilst I was playing handball in the alleys.

It’s particularly sad for me as my family have a lot of history playing handball. My Dad and two brothers were All Ireland handball champions. My Dad even built his own handball alley.

“My daughter and all her friends went to the Marist, when I told her the news she was devastated”, said Hannah.

The alleys were knocked down last Thursday, despite the efforts of Hannah and several fellow locals: “We did try to get the demolition of the handball courts stopped but there was no preservation order

because it was inside the college grounds.

“We didn’t win the war but we won the battle and in the end we saved about 13 trees from being knocked down”.

Another local who was especially sad to see the handball alleys demise was Pat Coburn from Oaklawns who grew up on St Mary’s Road.

Pat attended the Marist school and spent much of his time playing in the hand-

ball alleys: “I was extremely sad to see the alleys go.

They’ve always been there. I remember when I used to play in them when I was younger, it didn’t matter who you were, from the richest to the poorest; everyone could play in the handball alleys”, he explained.

And just like Hannah, Pat’s family history is also steeped in handball: “My father and my

two brothers all went to the Marist and they all played handball. I won a senior title when I was there and my father Brendan, who was a boarder during his time, had won one as well so we were the first father and son pairing to win it.

“I’m very sad to see the handball alleys go, and I have to say I’m disappointed I didn’t get to have one last whack around them”, he added.

A man who left photo ID at the scene of a burglary found himself appearing at Dundalk District Court where he was sentenced to eight months in prison.

Stephen McVeigh of Commons Road, Dromiskin, was described as a man who had plenty of opportunities in life but who had suffered from a serious drug addiction, after pleading guilty to a number of charges.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on October 18 last year Gardai

were called to a burglary at College Heights where the defendant was apprehended outside. Damage to the front door and patio door was estimated at €600.

On May 9, 2014, tenants at Rockfield Manor returned to their house to find it had been ransacked. The patio door had been smashed, while eggs had been smashed on the wall.

Clothes had been taken and were valued at €1,000 by each tenant.

In a bundle of clothes

that remained, a wallet was found with photo ID of the defendant. He was later arrested and admitted being in the house with another person. A laptop was also taken and damage was estimated at €550.

Mr McVeigh also pleaded guilty breaking into the Mens Sheds in Seatown and causing damage estimated at €2,500 on February 2 this year.

On May 13 he took €143 from the St Josephs GFC clubrooms in Dromiskin,

which was recovered when he was stopped leaving the building.

He also admitted causing €2,000 damage to a room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Following his arrest at that location, €7,000 and a further £650stg belonging to the defendant was left in a safe and this was offered to the court to pay compensation to the victims.

Any funds left over were to be divided between the Mens Sheds and a youth project in Cox’s Demesne.

Old phones will help get iPad for Sadhbh

Anybody with any old phones, iPads or tablets lying about the house have been urged to hand them into the local tourist office to help local girl Sadhbh Kelleher get her very own iPad. Dundalk girl Sadhbh who recently starred in the ‘Here I Am’ exhibition in The town Square has Down Syndrome and her parents are currently partaking in Down Syndrome Ireland’s campaign which offers a free iPad in exchange for the collection of old phones.

According to Dundalk’s Tourist Officer Sinead Roche there has been a great response so far but there is more work to be done and she has urged anybody with old phones lying about the house to gather them up and drop them into the tourist office.

Sadhbh is part of the ‘Here I Am’ exhibition

“Sadhbh’s parents are trying to get her an iPad through the Down Syndrome Ireland scheme and so far we have gathered about 30 phones here at the tourist office. In total we need to get about 150 so hopefully people will get in touch with us and bring in any old phones, iPads or tablets they have lying

around the house”, explained Sinead.

Sadhbh featured in the very successful ‘Here I Am’ book by Kerry photographer Dan Murphy which celebrates the unique personalities of children with Down syndrome in Ireland and aims to challenge people to look at the child rather than the syndrome. Last week

the book was brought to Dundalk’s town square in exhibition form with all the children featured in the book brought to life in the town square.

The book ‘Here I am’ is available to buy from Dundalk’s Tourist Office for €25 with all proceeds raised going directly to Down Syndrome Ireland.

Dundalk Dog Rescue sponsored walk FUN for all the family at Dundalk Dog Rescue’s annual Sponsored Dog Walk will take place on Sunday July 12 at 4pm.

Students from Faughart National School were proud to unveil their freshly painted mural last week, following their win in a recent competition hosted by Dulux.

The brightly coloured mural was created with the paint the students won following their success in the Dulux ‘Let’s Colour’ project.

Students from the school’s first and second classes

worked extremely hard under the supervision of their teacher Lorraine Higgins to create the video that won them the Louth section of the competition.

Schools that entered the competition were required to send a video to Dulux explaining why their school deserved to win.

Lorraine was full of praise for the 18 students who worked extremely hard to create the video:

“They were absolutely brilliant. We created the video for the competition in the school last month and put it up on YouTube. People then had to go online and vote for their favourite video. A few weeks later we won the Louth section of the competition and were given the prize of 150 litres of paint from Dulux.

“With the paint the boys and girls were then able to paint the mural in the shelter in the schools yard. The stu-

dents came out and each of them covered their hands in paint and left their handprints on the walls.

“They also painted a picture of St Brigid and every student painted in a different section of her cloak”, Lorraine explained.

There were several other schools who entered into the competition from Louth but only Faughart National School was lucky enough to pick up a prize.

A man who was refused entry into a licenced premises because he was intoxicated became so incensed that he approached two Gardai and demanded they ensure he was allowed in.

When his request was declined, he became involved in a heated argument with the Gardai and pushed one of them. The officers had to use incapacitant spray to arrest James McGeown of 199 Keady Road, Armagh.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that if a slightly jocular view was to be taken, the actions of the defendant could be seen as the very definition of intoxication.

However, he stated that this was where the lightheartedness ended, and admitted that it was a serious matter for which his client apologised.

He stated that the 19-year-old was given the benefit of an adult caution on a previous occasion, but not the Probation Act, as he asked Judge Flann Brennan to extend leniency towards him by not imposing a conviction. He stated that he was willing to make a contribution if so directed.

In finding the facts proven and dismissing the case, Judge Brennan stated that he would not be given another chance.

“This is your first time in court and I will treat you as a first time offender. I will give you the benefit of the Probation Act but not a second time. Mind your drinking and your temper”, he warned.

A group of local residents attended a picket last Friday to oppose the lack of action taken by the council regarding the derelict Ard Dealgan apartment complex on Quay Street.

This was the second picket organised by Sinn Fein Councillor Jennifer Green who said the group would be gathering on the last Friday of every month until the council found a solution to the problem: “The residents are still frustrated and angry with the movement in regards to Ard Dealgan and the pickets are

a platform for them to voice their opinion and show the council how frustrated they are in regards to the lack of movement.

“They said at the last

council meeting that they’re looking at some residential option in regards to it .They are listening so we just have to keep that pressure on and hopefully come to

The apartments have been empty since 2009 when they were vacated due to fire safety issues.

The site is a hub for

anti-social behaviour with a number of fires and acts of vandalism having taken place in recent years. The site has also been used by squatters.

Damien Johnson, who lives around the corner from the apartments on Barrack Street, said the complex was a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

“I’ve lived around the corner for the past four years and since I’ve been there I’ve noticed an increase in criminal activity and people hanging around. We’re out here to show our opposition”, revealed Damien.

RCNE recruit volunteers for helpline Rape Crisis North East (RCNE) are recruiting volunteers to become helpling counsellors.

For those interested RCNE is offering the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Thursday September 17 and finish on Friday October 23. The helpline training is funded by

the Manuela Riedo Foundation. The training is free and in return, RCNE will ask you to commit to four hours of your time per week to provide telephone counselling support to survivors of Rape Crisis North East.

The training will take place at RCNE, 59A Anne Street, with the 12 day-workshops taking place on Thursdays and

Fridays.

RCNE Helpline Service is a “lifeline” for many victims of rape and sexual abuse who need to talk to someone who cares. All telephone volunteers are trained to listen, support and offer information and counselling support to callers who use the line.

l n .There will be no -shortage of scientists, mathematicians or engineers from Dundalk in the years to come judging by the results of the recent ‘Discover Primary Maths and Science STEM Awards’ Three primary schools in Dundalk won prestigious Awards of Science and Maths Excellence for their endeavours on the Discover Primary Science and Maths Programme with St Joseph’s, Scoil Mhuire na NGael and Redeemer Boys School all picking up awards last week.

This award is given out for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) work in primary schools all over the country to institutions that have really captured a whole school approach to engaging students in science as well as schools that are starting this journey with a few of their classes The programme is aimed at sparking curiosity in the minds of young children to give them an appreciation and love for science and maths, with the ambition of choosing science related subjects for Leaving Certificate and ultimately setting

them on a course to study a related course at third level. Michelle Murray from Redeemer Boy’s School was delighted that the school was recognised for their hard work throughout the year and praised all the children for their efforts during the year.

“We had all classes in the school on board with every teacher involved in ensuring the children actually enjoyed the various projects and experiments they took part in. We got up to all sorts including making bubble rockets, lava lamps as well as numerous engineering and technology projects. Every child from junior infants to 6th class got involved and enjoyed the whole process from beginning to end”, explained

Michelle.

Meanwhile in Scoil Mhuire na nGael in Bay Estate third class teachers Margaret Woods and Kevin Mullen were delighted to have received a STEM certificate for the efforts of their eager students throughout the year.

“This is our first year taking part in the STEM programme and it has proved a very enjoyable experience for the children who have really got on board with all the projects and experiments we have undertaken throughout the year”, noted Mr Mullen.

Mrs Woods echoed those words going on to explain what the children did to earn their award.

“We have learned loads this year including a computer programme

called scratch and a thermal imaging experiment as well as receiving interesting talks from Gareth Kelly who is an engineering lecturer from DKIT”, explained Margaret.

Finally St Joseph’s National School teacher Shane McEntee was delighted with his pupils efforts as they secured a plaque award for their hard work throughout the year.

“This is our second year taking part in these awards and we are delighted to have received a plaque for our efforts.

Every child in the school got involved and we even got the parents in on it as they came down and joined us for ‘Maths Week’ earlier on this term. We had Science Week and ‘Engineers Week’ as well which included a trip to DKIT which the children really enjoyed.

“It’s a great programme and it’s all part of our Schools Integration Project (SIP) which aims to place information and communications technology (ICT) at the heart of the educational experience in our school”, explained Shane.

Dismay at cut in the lone parent allowance

A local campaigner has warned that tomorrow’s single parent payment cuts will result in many families in Dundalk being left on the breadline.

Luke Martin a long time campaigner for equal rights for parents has said that people around Dundalk and all over the country are extremely worried and upset about the savage cuts which are due to come in from July 2.

From tomorrow parents in receipt of the One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) are due to be moved to different payments; mainly to the newly introduced Job Seekers Transitional Al-

lowance (JSTA), or to Job Seekers Allowance (JSA). With this new system the single parent payment will only be available until the family’s youngest child turns seven-years-old.

The limit had previously been 18 years of age in 2012 before it was later reduced to 16 last year.

The Government say the idea of the programme is to encourage more people to enter into paid work and to try and put an end to a cycle of jobless households that goes on from generation to generation.

However, according to Luke these latest rounds of savage cuts will leave many one-parent fami-

lies on the breadline and facing even more of a struggle to make ends meet.

“This is simply not fair on single mothers to expect them to have to take yet another cut. The Government say that they want to get more people back in the workforce but there are no jobs out there. And even if they do find a job how can they pay for childcare?”, asked Luke?

“This will have a knock-on effect as well for single fathers who are already struggling to keep up with maintenance payments. You can be sure that when these cuts are introduced that single mothers will

Bay Estate, Dundalk, admitted the offence after being arrested on September 19 last year.

Insp Martin Beggy told the court that at 12.30am on that date, Gardai were called by a security company in relation to

an alarm being activated at the Teagasc building on the Dublin road.

A witness had seen three males enter the building and Mr Joyce was arrested near the scene. Nothing was stolen

but damage valued at €351 was caused, while the call out charge to the security company was €309.

MAD Youth Theatre is hosting a week long residential exchange with Prague Youth Theatre on July 6 in the Carlingford Adventure Centre. In February 2014 MADYT was invited by PYT to take part in the Class in Action international Youth Theatre Festival where the members of MAD was hosted in the homes of members of Prague Youth Theatre.

They have since

developed a strong bond and now MADYT is returning the gesture.

The aim of the residential is exploring the theme ‘Theatre For Change’ and will bring focus to the issue of equality and discrimination.

The issue of equality and discrimination will be carefully explored through drama methods of Augusto Boals ‘Forum Theatre’ .

Forum Theatre is a form

of interactive theatre developed by the late Brazilian theatre director, Augusto Boal, as part of his ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’.

Forum Theatre empowers the audience to actively explore different options for dealing with shared problems and motivates them to make positive changes in their own lives.

Artistic director Kwasie Boyce will lead the

workshops using the resource pack developed by the National Association for Youth Drama that was created specifically for working with young people. The particpants will gain knowledge of these methods and will create their own piece of drama where the general public will be invited to take part and M witness how theatre can be used for change on July 11.

A DUNDALK woman is doing her bit to promote Louth as a tourist destination after bringing a group of travel journalists from Australia and New Zealand to see what the Wee County has to offer.

Aoife Finnegan, from St Mary’s Road, is currently based in Sydney with Tourism Ireland, and as a result of this

trip it is estimated that over one million people Down Under will read about the many attractions in Louth.

Representing a variety of travel magazines and newspapers (including The West Australian, one of Australia’s largest newspapers) – with a combined circulation of over one million – the five journalists were

here to experience at first-hand Ireland’s newest visitor experience, Ireland’s Ancient East and, in turn, to inspire their readers to come and experience the destination for themselves.

The group drove along the Cooley Peninsula, and enjoyed a tour of medieval Carlingford, before staying at Ghan House.

Tourism Ireland recently unveiled a new, three-year strategy to grow visitor numbers from Australia. The strategy sets out challenging and ambitious targets which will see the number of Australian visitors to the island of Ireland grow by +20%, to almost 220,000 per year, by the end of 2017.

Call to investigate Sun, sea, sand and safety risk of not having A&E in Dundalk

County Councillor Tomás Sharkey has contacted the CEOP of the Royal College of Surgeons Hospital Group with a view to launching an investigation into the recent death of local man Raymond Hearty.

After the death of 48-year-old Raymond Hearty, his family questioned why the ambulance had to bypass Louth County Hospital to take Raymond to The Lourdes Hospital. According to Cllr Sharkey, they asked the same question that is on the lips of everybody in Dundalk.

“Raymond’s funeral heard a heartfelt appeal for services to be returned to Dundalk. I have contacted Bill Maher and asked for this case to be investigated. I want to establish the risk to life in having no A&E

in Dundalk, the detrimental effects to patients who have to travel for longer to Drogheda and the logistics involved in re-instating services in Dundalk”, he explained.

“The people of Dundalk campaigned and marched to oppose the closure of A&E, Intensive care and Acute Medical in Dundalk. We collected a petition of thousands of signatures.

Numerous election candidates promised service re-instatement on their election. We were right to warn the HSE of the dire consequences of the closure of services.

“As a member of the HSE Regional Health Forum, I am committed to keeping the issue of services in Dundalk on the agenda and in the minds of HSE officials”, added the county councillor.

Meanwhile, Cllr Sharkey has called for postmortems to be carried out in local hospitals at the weekends.

“In recent times I am aware that a number of tragic deaths took place on a Friday night / early Saturday.

“This meant that post-mortems were not carried out until the following Monday morning and the families involved were delayed in receiving the remains home for a wake and funeral.

“This arrangement can cause stress and additional grief for families. It is not fair and should be addressed by HSE management. I have called for a review of the arrangements and expect that the merits of the request be taken on board”, added Cllr Sharkey.

Louth County Council are making water safety a core focus this bathing season by providing a Lifeguard’s Service at our three awardwinning Blue Flag Beaches - Clogherhead, Port and Templetown in the Cooley Peninsula. The Lifeguard Patrol is in situ every weekend since the beginning of June and is being extended to a seven day week service from the start of July to the end of August, with weekend cover again until Mid- September 2015., lifeguards, litter control and environmental information and activities.

Man escapes drink driving conviction

A man who was charged with a drink driving offence escaped a conviction after he successfully argued that the case against him should be dismissed.

Michael McNamee of 8 Donaldsons Road, Creggan, Crossmaglen, appeared at Dundalk District Court following an incident on Feb-

ruary 3, 2014 at Bothar na Feirme, Dundalk.

The 30-year-old defendant faced charges of failing to provide a specimen, but his barrister argued that as a sample was subsequently produced, this should have been replaced by a charge of driving while under the influence of an intoxicant.

He pointed out that as the initial charge carried a more serious penalty, this was prejudicial to his client and as a result the case should be dismissed. He cited a similar case to back up his argument.

Insp Martin Beggy conceded that it would have been normal practice to re-

place the charge once the sample had been returned.

However, he pointed out that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute at the time the charge was issued.

After considering the matter, Judge Flann Brennan, ruled that it would be unfair to the defendant to proceed and he dismissed the case.

On Sunday, Dundalk CC 1st XI went into their match against Swords 1st XI unbeaten in the league.

The two were well acquainted, having played out a tense affair in the cup two weeks previously, when Swords ran out narrow winners.

This match was no different and despite a valiant effort from Dundalk in the field, they unfortunately succumbed to the big-hitting Swordsmen.

Having won the toss, captain Mike Waterman elected to bat and sent in Andrew Pike and Lethin Mathews to open. Dundalk were short of runs be-

A driver who turned away from a checkpoint was fined €300 at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to a charge of careless driving.

Daniel Fearon of Mulligan Road, Mullaghban, Armagh, was observed turning away from a joint Garda/Customs checkpoint on April 17 this year. He accelerated away and twice drove on the incorrect side of the road before stopping for Gardai at Annaloughan. He was initially charged with dangerous driving.

At the time he made reference to the fuel in his car not being correct and the car was handed over to Customs and Excise.

Solicitor, Paul Tiernan, stated that he had been lent the car and knew the fuel was wrong, and that is why he turned away. He accepts that his behaviour is very stupid. He added that he had the promise of a job if he has a licence.

Duck Race in aid of SOSAD The hugely popular duck race to raise funds for SOSAD is back on the Castletown River next month.

The event takes place on Sunday July 12 and following the success of last year when 5,000 rubber ducks were released, this time 15,000 will compete for the top prize.

According to one of the organisers, Gerry Duffy, it promises to be a great family day out with lots of activities as they aim to raise money for the organisation.

There will be prizes of €500, €300 and €200 for owners of first, second and third.

The race starts from the big bridge at 4pm and will travel 500 yards, lasting about 20 minutes in total.

Ducks are €2 and can be bought at various locations around town, or online at www.sosadireland.ie. Anyone requiring further information can contact Gerry at 087 4415138.

Gerry pointed out that SOSAD are grateful to the support of Dundalk Sub Aqua Search and Rescue, and Black and White Living.

David claims top prize at Dundalk

A superb round of sevenunder-par saw 21 handicapper David Williams take Leslie Walker’s Professional’s Prize on Sunday.

A blemish-free nett 65 gave him a two shot victory over five handicapper Brian Renaghan, who took the Cat 1 prize, and 14 handicapper Michael Kelly who won in Cat 2. The Cat 3 winner was Andrew McKell who shot a level par 72 off 27.

Chris Blackmore, who recently became the club’s latest scratch golfer, maintained his superb form to take the gross prize with a one under

par 71 while Michael Gallagher won the Veteran’s Prize and Jordan Mackin won the Juvenile Prize.

Three days after hosting a highly successful President’s Prize competition, Tom Clarke found himself back in the limelight last Wednesday but this time he was the once receiving the top prize.

His 23pts over the back nine was enough to win Wednesday’s competition on countback from Michael Carr and Bernard Crombie after all three had finished level on 42pts.

The Junior Louth Tennis Open 2015 sponsored by Fyffes got off to a winning start last Saturday with the Under -8s Red Ball and Under-9s Orange Ball Round Robin events on modified courts.

The U12 Boys Qualifier singles matches took place alongside these events and the Tournament continued on Sunday morning with the Boys and Girls Under-10 Singles Round Robin events.

The spectators also enjoyed watching the play from the Tennis Club Balcony while partaking in refreshments and treats from the Tennis Club’s Racket Cafe which is open Monday to Saturday.

Play continues all week until Finals Day next Saturday and we encourage as many people from Dundalk to drop by to see the Junior Tennis Players in full action and to see the recently upgraded facilities that are available at the Dundalk Tennis and Badminton Club.

Mountain trek Eric Beggs from Dundalk, along with the help of his local community, has once again organised the Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Irish patient-led charity Fighting Blindness.

The Cooley Mountain Trek will take place on Sunday, July 12 and includes a long walk (12km) for the more advanced walker and a short walk (6km) suitable for families. The 12km walk begins at 11am and the 6km walk at 12pm.

Buses will be available at 10.30am for the long walk participants and at 11.30 am for the short walk participants to transport people from the Newry end of the Lisdoo car park to the event starting point at the Lumpers Bar, Ravensdale. Entry fee on the day is €20 for adults and €5 for children (refreshments included).

Fantastic darts year finishes

The door has closed on another year of fantastic darts and even better debate in the Tuborg sponsored Dundalk and District Darts League .

At the end of a season that produced some great darts, the Divisional League Champions and runners up read as follows Premier Division : Champions Avenue Eagles Runners Up The Stags First Division : Champions Punters Sharks Runners Up The Fane Second Division : The Stags White Runners Up Fergusons Third Division : Windmill Warriors Runners Up Punters Tigers In the last Number of weeks all the remaining competitions within the League have been run off with the Divisional Cup Finals taking place in various venues.

The Premier Division Cup saw the Stags beat a resilient Commercial team, while in the First Division Cup Kehoes came out on top against league champions Punters Sharks.

was the last team competition to be won finished out for the year and it has the distinction of being the only “Open Draw” event within the league.

The teams that qualified for the finals were The Stags, Commercial 1896, Mc Enteggarts and Avenue Eagles, with the Stags and Avenue Eagles who reached the decider.

That final proved to be another very entertaining encounter with The Stags eventually coming out on top.

The final competition to be played out was the title of Divisional Singles champion. All four Divisions were hosted by the Avenue Inn who had a wonderful setup for a night of darts with Six boards available on the

night.

All Divisions showed some exceptional Darts on the night but the premier Division was the most eye catching because it was won by a current Irish Youth international, Mark Connolly, who held off the challenge of Ray Campbell, while Conor McArdle defeated Bob Morgan to win the First Division title.

In the Second Division Tom Byrne secured the title in a game against Fergusons Jim McKevitt., while Rodney McLoughlin won the Third Division final.

The AGM date has also been set for August 6 at 7pm in the Redeemer Hall in order to allow the new committee to prep for the upcoming year.

Details just announced of the new MINI Clubman, which should be available in the New Year.

The Clubman follows on from the newish MINI 3-Door and 5-Door Hatches, with the new Clubman being bolder and larger than its forerunner. It also has four doors, rather than the strange three-door set up of the predecessor although does keep the two rear boot doors, it now shares the same platform as the BMW 2 Series Active and Gran Tourer.
