Two brothers from Carlingford will cycle the length of the country next month to raise money for three causes close to their hearts.

Dan and John McKevitt in the company of some friends will cycle from Mizen Head in Cork to Malin Head in Donegal on August 10 as they attempt to raise €10,000 which will be split between the Foy Centre in Carlingford, The Maria Goretti Foundation and The Irish Cancer Society.

The idea was first mooted as a fundraiser for the Foy Centre three years ago but due to a variety of circumstances that cycle didn’t take place. John and Dan picked the Irish Cancer Charity as one of their chosen charities in memory of their friend Brian Conlon who passed away from cancer last year. Brian was on the Continued on Page 4

Faughart Community School graduation ceremony

Faughart Community School held a beautiful socially distanced graduation ceremony in their school yard last Thursday where six pupils were presented with graduation certificates, graduation balloons and Faughart CNS mug, keyring and pens as a memento of their time in Faughart CNS. The parents association also presented the pupils with graduation hoodies, which they are wearing in the picture. The pupils graduating then enjoyed some pizza with their parents and the teachers in the school in the beautiful weather.

The boards of both credit unions have unanimously approved the transfer of engagements by board resolutions following permission by the Central Bank of Ireland to proceed by board resolution As a result, the combined entity will be one of the largest credit unions in Ireland and will deliver immediate benefits to members, staff and the wider community The Board of Directors of Dundalk Credit Union Limited and Cuchullain Credit Union Limited, having fully assessed independent reports and findings derived from an extensive due diligence process, have voted unanimously to proceed with the transfer of engagements of Cuchullain Credit Union Limited to Dundalk Credit Union Limited by board resolutions.

The Central Bank of Ireland provided approval for the transfer of engagements to proceed in this manner. The combined entity will be one of the largest community credit unions in the country.

A statement released jointly today by Dundalk Credit Union Limited and Cuchullain Credit Union Limited, reports that “while the intention of the boards was to hold special general meetings (SGMs) at which the proposed transfer of engagements would have

been put forward for approval by members of each credit union, prioritizing the health and safety of members prevented these public meetings from going ahead. Holding SGMs is not possible in this instance due to Covid 19 public health risks and associated public health policy. As a result of this, the transfer of engagements is now being executed by board resolutions, as allowed for in credit union legislation and following receipt of Central Bank approval to proceed in this fashion”.

According to Paddy Donnelly, Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union Limited this represents an exciting time for the members, staff and boards of both credit unions.

“This project is about the people of Dundalk and its environs and is about supporting the social and economic well-being of Dundalk and the North East, with something different – a 21st Century value-driven credit union to meet the financial needs of a 21st Century member.

“The people of Dundalk came together in the 1960s to build two credit unions to help

improve and shape the lives of local people and our community. Going forward that same commitment and determination will only deepen as we become stronger together. Together we serve Dundalk and the North East better and together we create a brighter future,” stated Mr Donnelly.

Michael Rafferty, Chairman of Cuchullain Credit Union Limited said that combining the credit unions, we will create a stronger platform that means they can broaden the range of services on offer to all members, including better on-line facilities, enhanced savings services, and longer office opening hours.

“In coming together, we will also have the capacity to broaden our lending services to offer larger loans and mortgages and to provide loans to local businesses that directly support local jobs and the local community.

Dan and John take on cycle from Seizure of Mizen to Malin Head for charity counterfeit From Page 1 original team with the brothers to take part in this fundraiser three years ago and the duo will now cycle the 466km trip in his memory.

According to Dan the inspiration to reignite the idea came about because of the lockdown and Covid19.

“We would have been pretty keen cyclists for most of our lives but through work and family we haven’t really been out a whole lot over the last few years. When COVID19 hit we got back out on the bike and lucky enough we have lots of spaces in Carlingford including the greenway to go out and cycle so that got us back in the habit. John and his wife Theresa are both on the board of the Foy Centre in Carlingford and they were talking about the spiralling costs incurred

“The Foy Centre is a local community centre run entirely by volunteers. The centre provides a number of facilities to local groups including soccer, Gaelic and The Carlingford Knights Rugby teams, gymnastics, indoor football and basketball as well as a meeting place for

local groups. The building is also home to Gavin and Nichola Ring’s Singing Academy, Fitness with Marie, Little people Pre-school and The Orchard Bakery. The main source of income for the centre is rent from those businesses and funds raised from plays produced by the local drama group. So at that stage myself and John decided that maybe we could

resurrect the idea to do a fundraiser for the centre and cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head to raise a few euro,” explained Dan. “We’ve both been training hard since March and we’ve managed to rope in a few more people to help as well. We have John Doyle from Omeath who will cycle with us and we are hoping to get a few more people as well.

“We will also have a couple of support team driving with us in cars and vans and we are currently figuring out which route to take.

We will probably go through Killarney, Ennis Mayo and then up to Donegal that way but we’re still working out the finer details.

“When we first came up with this idea three years ago our dear friend Brian Conlon had committed to come with us. Last year Brian

passed away having been diagnosed with cancer.

“We are doing the cycle in his memory and we will donate some of the money raise to the Irish Cancer Society. We are also donating money to the Maria Goretti Foundation who do great work for children with disabilities out in Lordship.

“We have been training hard and have another five or six weeks to go before we set off so hopefully by then we’ll be in decent enough shape to complete the journey.

clothing Gardaí in Dundalk have seized €44,500 worth of counterfeit clothing, and more than €5,000 worth of suspected cocaine, cannabis plants and cannabis herb in two separate searches of properties in Dundalk on Friday June 26.

At noon on Friday Gardaí attached to Dundalk Drugs Unit carried out a search of a premises under warrant, where they seized a quantity of counterfeit clothing with an estimated retail value of €8,500. Also discovered during the course of this search was approximately €2,100 of suspected cocaine (pending analysis).

As a direct result of this seizure, a follow up search was conducted by Gardaí at another loca-

tion in Dundalk where counterfeit clothing with a retail value of approximately €36,000 was seized.

Items seized included men and women’s clothing, shoes, runners, handbags, watches and sunglasses.

During the course of this search, Gardaí also discovered cannabis plants valued at €3,200 (subject to analysis), and suspected cannabis herb valued at approximately €300. While, weighing scales and other items such as mobile phones associated with drug dealing were also seized.

No arrests have been made to date, but Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.

Bush PP and St Vincent’s amongst first Leaving Cert students set to graduate in computer science

The Covid-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of the new Leaving Certificate subject Computer Science, according to researchers at Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software and University of Limerick.

Computer Science was available to Leaving Certificate stu-

dents in 40 schools (13 DEIS Schools) selected via open competition with Bush Post Secondary school and St Vincent’s secondary school successful in County Louth. The subject will be rolled out nationally for Leaving Certificate students commencing in September 2020, for examination in 2022.

Lero’s Clare McInerney, who is part of a team researching the implementation of the new Computer Science Programme at Leaving Certificate, said it is hard to imagine how we could continue to function as a society without the digital technologies we take for granted.

“Right now, digital technolo-

gies are playing so many important roles they are frequently overlooked. For example, while most people would agree that software such as Skype or Zoom are poor substitutes for face-toface meetings, they nonetheless provide us with opportunities to meet and interact that otherwise would not be possible. Independent Councillor Maeve Yore has written to the former Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan TD and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris requesting body worn cameras be issued immediately to all frontline operational Garda personnel.

She states in the Report of Commission on The Future of Policing in Ireland 2018 there is a recommendation for body worn cameras to be deployed.

The Independent Councillor also says it is completely unacceptable that over a year has

passed since the Government approved a Bill for the use of these cameras and she will be writing to the New Government demanding urgent action on the progression of this Bill and Scheme.

St Patrick’s Parish priests record blessings of the grave private ceremony A recording of this year’s Blessings of the Graves took place last week with priests from St Patrick’s Parish in Dundalk ensuring that all graves in the graveyard were blessed. The annual ceremony was officially cancelled this year due to COVID19 restrictions but priests in St Patrick’s felt it important that the graves were blessed.

Fr Mark O’Hagan released a short statement explaining their reasons for holding the ceremony.

“Due to Covid 19 and the government restrictions set down in relation to outside gatherings sadly the Blessing of the Graves in St

A project to develop a new Advanced Manufacturing & Technology Training Centre of Excellence in Dundalk, has been named as one of 11 successful border county projects from the North East and North West of the country approved to share in the €17m Border Enterprise Development Fund 2020, an initiative of the Government of Ireland administered by Enterprise Ireland.

Nineteen applications were received from project groups in counties Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth with 11 projects selected for funding following a rigorous evaluation process. Four of the finalist projects will be based in Louth, two in Monaghan, two in Donegal, one in Cavan, one in Sligo and one in Leitrim.

‘Powering the Regions’ strategy. The 11 successful projects announced today including the Training Centre of Excellence in Dundalk, illustrate the power of collaboration and will enhance productivity of SMEs to build scale at a regional level.

Funding boost for local community projects A total of €64,790 in funding has been allocated to enhance facilities in urban and rural communities across Louth, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator John McGahon said the Community Enhancement Programme [CEP] provides capital grants to community groups to improve amenities in disadvantaged areas.

Senator McGahon pointed out that the CEP provides vital support to community groups in order to help them improve their facilities.

“It supports small-scale funding for projects which range from purchasing lawnmowers and IT equipment to minor renovations to buildings. Ultimately the programme responds to local needs and therefore it also provides some funding towards larger projects where needed.

“We depend hugely on these community groups in Louth and I hope that this funding will help them to continue the important work that they carry out within our society.

“I urge communities throughout Louth to familiarise themselves with the CEP and to apply for funding if they feel that it can be of local benefit,” he stated.

Wee County Double Draw to take place on Easter Sunday next year

The Wee County Double House Draw will now take place on Easter Sunday next year following a meeting between the Louth GAA Committee in Darver last Thursday. The draw had proved very popular prior to the coronavirus outbreak but was suspended as the country shut down in March due to the spread of the virus.

The aim of the draw is to raise money which will be put towards building a new GAA stadium in Dundalk. A press release from Louth GAA stated that tickets can still be bought and anybody who has bought a ticket thus far will be automatically put in the

draw next Easter Sunday.

“Following a meeting of the House Draw Committee in Darver Centre of Excellence on Thursday 18th June it was decided to get the Wee County Double House Draw underway again. The draw has been suspended since the start of the Covid outbreak as we felt it would be in the best interests of everyone’s health and safety to do so.

“Firstly, we have set a new date, it is now Easter Sunday 4th April 2021. This we feel is of vital importance so as to give clarity to all those who have purchased tickets and for those

still looking to purchase.

“For the minute ticket sales can take place online through www.pickahouse.ie and we will be announcing promotions in due course. Once Covid restrictions are eased you will see sellers out and about and in focal points around the county.

Seán Farrell named as new chamber President

The Dundalk Chamber AGM took place via zoom last week where Seán Farrell was named as the new President of the organisation.

Seán who succeeds Pat McCormick was educated at Redeemer Boys Primary School and the Christian Brothers Secondary School.

Primarily, based in Dublin Sean progressed to employment within fields of marketing and the retail sector.

Returning to Dundalk in 2005, Sean has and continues to be actively involved with many local community groups and initiatives, including Dundalk BIDS, Dundalk Tidy Towns, Chairperson of Dundalk Town Watch and Chairperson of Dundalk Tourism Committee.

The Cooley native who was first elected to Louth County Council last year began work in her new role as Senator on Monday and was understandably delighted to have been chosen by the new Taoiseach.

“Today I received one of the eleven Taoiseach’s nominations to Seanad Éireann. I am hugely honoured and humbled. To be in the Oireachtas to represent your county is a phenomenal privilege and one that I do not take lightly. Erin was first elected to Louth County Council last year when she secured the party’s seat which had been held by the now retired Fianna Fail councillor Peter Savage for 45 years.

She polled well in the local elections securing an impressive 1,151 votes a total only sur-

passed by Sinn Fein’s Antóin Watters and Fine Gael senator John McGahon.

With Erin McGreehan and John McGahon both beginning their new roles in the Seanad it means that a councillor each for Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will have to be co-opted to replace the outgoing senators. Craig Colgan, Roisin Duffy, Colman

Ryan and John Reilly have all put their name forward for the Fine Gael convention who will make a decision on July 14.

It is not yet known who will secure the Fianna Fail nomination although Declan Breathnach’s campaign manager for the last election Andrea Mc Kevitt has been tipped for the position.

The end to one of the strangest school years on record arrived last week for many and to mark the special occasion Redeemer Boys School held a special celebration to say goodbye to their sixth class pupils. School principal Michelle Murray gave a flavour of how the day went as staff said goodbye to the students one last time.

“We held our celebration on Wednesday 24th June where each boy was given a five minute slot to come to the school to pick up a graduation bag. The staff flanked the walk from the gate to the front doors and clapped them in and out of the building (their last time

crossing the front doors as pupils). A balloon arch in school colours stood in front of the entrance,” explained Michelle.

“After visiting the sanitising station the families entered the foyer where they chose props for a fun photo shoot. The class teacher, Mrs Doherty, and principal, myself, ‘photobombed’ some shots from a safe distance.

The boys put on their maroon ‘Class of 2020 Quarantined’ hoodies, received their graduation ceremony bags as well as some celebratory cupcakes. They walked from the school for the final time to the sound of clapping from the staff.

“Later on in the afternoon we all went online for the actual ceremony. Pupils and parents read poems, we watched videos (Down Memory Lane, Moving On, Staff TikTok dance, Special Message Videos and a prerecorded song from two of our very talented teachers).

“The boys exchanged prewritten letters with their parents. They opened wrapped gifts at various points in the ceremony, e.g. a desk calendar for the 20/21 academic year with photo/life motto (written by the boys) for each month, a tie/polo shirt for the secondary school they will attend in September opened before the Deputy Principal

read ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ by Dr Seuss. One of our SNAs, Aidan Moore, made personalised stones for each boy and our HSCL teacher funded engraved wooden photo frames.

“The Class Teacher read out the boys who were ‘Most Likely To...’ do various things in life, e.g. become the President of Ireland, as voted on by the boys.

“One pupil unwrapped the Student of the Year Plaque and every boy in the class received a personalised trophy for a special contribution to school life, e.g. Principal’s Award, Academic Star, Artfully Creative, Excellence in Maths, Super Speller, Stu-

dent of Integrity, and Leadership and Positivity.

“Two representatives of our Parents’ Association were online with us, they had received flowers to their door earlier that day as a thank you for all their hard work during the year.

“The ceremony was brought to a close with a very emotive rendition of ‘My Wish’ (pre-recorded video by two teachers) being played. It was a wonderful day that we will never forget, just like we will never forget this special group of boys!

“Some have a story, these boys made history!,” stated Michelle.

Irish Water has announced the completion of upgrade works to the wastewater infrastructure in Ardee.

Upgrades at the wastewater treatment plant, improvements to the sewer network and the construction of a new wastewater pumping station in Ardee will safeguard the environment and support the economic and social development of the town and surrounding areas.

Erin proposes extra bank DkIT launches ambitious strategic plan charting next phase of evolution for institute holiday to aid economy Fianna Fail councillor Erin McGreehan has responded to some of the ‘flak’ she has received following her proposal for an extra bank holiday to be introduced by the government this year.

The North Louth councillor received criticism in some quarters for suggesting that one or maybe two bank holidays could be added by governments this year to generate economic activity and jobs. Responding to that criticism she stated that she was only opening the conversation on the issue and still believes it’s an idea worth discussing.

“I got a bit of flak last week for suggesting we should create a couple of extra bank holidays this year but I think it’s good to get these things out in the public for discussion and start the conversation where we can outline the positives and negatives of the idea. Personally I

believe that an extra bank holiday or two would give a huge boost to the tourist and hospitality industries locally who have all suffered massively during the COVID19 crisis.

“We need to proactively help small businesses and enterprises who will be starting

up again shortly and looking for customers.

As a mother of four kids I know personally I wouldn’t tend to go out for a family meal or a night away somewhere unless it was a bank holiday and given the fact we have lost out on three bank holidays this year due to lockdown why not slot them in later in the year to help boost the economy? There was a recent report in the UK which suggested that an extra bank holiday over there could boost the economy to the tune of £500m which is nothing to be sniffed at. We have less bank holidays than the majority of our European counterparts and personally I believe that we should have had an extra one this year anyway to mark our independence so as I said I think it’s good to start the discussion and find ways to help our recovering businesses and enterprises,” concluded Erin.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) has launched a new three-year strategic plan, signalling a new era of growth and positive transformation for the institute and wider region.

The plan entitled ‘DkIT Strategic Plan 2020-22 – Leading and Shaping the Future of Higher Education in the North Leinster South Ulster Region’ was revealed as part of a virtual launch to staff and partners this morning.

The new plan, which was recently ratified by the DKIT Governing Body, clearly articulates the institute’s mission to be the unequivocal leader for higher education and craft apprenticeships, and the engine for growth and social cohesion North LeinsterSouth Ulster through the achievement of TU status and cross-border alliances.

The five thematic areas set out in the plan, which encompass

It is a partnership initiative with eight organisations including Omeath District Development group, Engage 4 Change Project, Dundalk Youth Centre, New Leaf Programme- Ar-

dee, Youthwork Ireland Louth, Coxs Demesne Youth and Community Project, Dundalk Outcomers and Boomerang Youth Service in Drogheda.

The packs included a USB with mental wellbeing tools and resources, headphones, puzzles, mindfulness colouring books, hygiene products and stationary to write positive mental health messages.

As roads get busier motorists must prepare to share space

As the easing of COVID-19 restrictions continues, major routes across the country have seen traffic levels return to approximately 75% of normal volumes according to AA Ireland.

With the potential that traffic volumes could increase further as the country enters Phase 3 of the Government’s plan, the AA is urgoing motorists to exertcise additional caution -when driving due to an hincrease in cyclists and -pedestrians during the lockdown period.

hotels re-open,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “One that that we would stress is that motorists need to prepare for a very different driving experience than they have been used to pre-COVID.” “One of the potential positives that seems to be emerging from the outbreak is a greater allocation of space to pedestrians and cyclists, an important step in making sure our roads are safe for all users.

However, motorists must also do their part in keeping vulnerable road users safe by reducing their speed accordingly, avoiding dangerous overtaking manoeuvres, and allowing additional space wherever possible.”

planning a lengthy trip as we enter Phase 3, the AA has repeated the importance of keeping your car’s service history up to date and the importance of carrying out car safety checks at home. Currently the organisation’s Rescue service is attending to an average of over 250 breakdowns every day and expects this could rise further as travel distances increase.

“Many of us have been using our cars less in recent weeks and only for short journeys.

Before you set off on a longer journey to visit loved ones, it’s important that you carry out a basic safety check of your vehicle to ensure your tyres are in good condition and your lights are working correctly. If possible, it would even be a good idea to have a professional check that your brakes are in working order,” Faughnan added. “Doing so will keep you and your family safe while travelling, but also plays an important role in keeping other road users safe.”
