A young girl’s First Communion nightmare eventually had a happy ending thanks to the help and generosity of her schoolmates, teachers and local community.

Sarah Jane McGee who hails from Fatima is a pupil in the Redeemer Girl’s school was due to make her First Communion with her classmates on May 14 in the Redeemer church. Unfortunately, disaster struck two days prior to her big day when she contracted Chicken Pox and was forced to stay at home while her classmates made their First Holy

Communion.

Sarah’s mother Sylvana thought her daughter would have to make her First Communion with another school with children she didn’t know which was very upsetting for Sarah Jane.

“She was devastated when we told her she wouldn’t be able to make her Communion with her classmates.

Warning after beach rescue

By Paul Byrne The local Irish Coast Guard Rescue Service has warned people to exercise caution around our waters during the current spell of good weather and especially throughout the summer months.

The warning followed a lucky escape for four 12-year-old girls who got into difficulty when the tide came in around them.

A mother of one of the girls noticed they were missing and immediately called emergency services to request help from the Irish Coastguards.

Coastguard issues warning after Blackrock Beach rescue

Two units from Clogherhead Irish Rescue Service arrived along with a unit from Greenore. The Irish coastguard helicopter was deployed and almost immediately the four girls were spotted stranded at the far side of the river.

James Larkin, a coastguard from the Greenore unit urged people to take care when engaging in aquatic activities.

“There is always a significant rise in maritime recreational incidents at this time of the year due to the good weather as well as the secondary schools finishing up. We advise caution when out

on the beach or around water because as we saw today the water can become dangerous very quickly. If you are in anyway worried at all do not hesitate to call the Irish coastguards on 999 or 112. We would much rather get out to a false alarm than not to be called and have a tragedy on our hands.

“The bottom line is we all need to respect the water. The beaches are lovely at this time of year but just be careful and make sure everybody gets home ok,” advised James.

Although the four girls were a bit shaken after their ordeal they were thankfully otherwise fine. Irish Water Safety has a list of rules on their website advising people to be careful when out near water.

• The temperature of the sea, lakes, canals and inland water ways is still pretty cold and waters users should exercise caution and be aware

of cold water shock and hypothermia.

• Swim with others, never alone, close and parallel to shore.

• If walking on the beach be careful that you are not cut off by the tide. Seek local information about stranding risks.

• Members of the public using recreational craft at the beginning of the season should check the seaworthiness of their craft before launching, particularly engines.

• When departing check the weather forecast, tell someone where you are going and when expected back and wear a life jacket when going afloat.

• For further information on safety on the water check www.safetyonthewater.ie.

• If you see someone in difficulty in the sea, on the shore, cliffs, lakes or rivers dial 999/112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Garry Hoey sets standards at club and national level

Man purchased goods with cheques that bounced A man who found himself under financial pressure purchased goods with cheques that subsequently bounced in an attempt to pay back debts.

As a result, Patrick Dunning, of 35 Cherryvale, Bay Estate, Dundalk was sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to a number of offences.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on September 30 last year, he purchased a television from a shop in Drogheda valued at €500. He returned the following day and bought goods valued at €1300.

On both occasions he paid by cheque but didn’t have the funds

in his account.

On October 1 he paid for a lap top and printer worth €490 in a shop in Dundalk by cheque and on October 10 he bought a bicycle in Dundalk valued at €535. On August 20, 2015, the defendant ordered a cardboard baling machine which was delivered to Ath Leathan after being ordered by email. The company failed in their attempts to get payment.

When Mr Dunning was arrested he told Gardai that he had no intention of paying for the goods and was uncooperative in saying where the goods were. He stated that he was trying to pay a debt.

The defendant had 28 previous convictions and it was stated that he was currently serving a 12-month sentence for theft.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 37-year-old married father was going through difficult financial circumstances at the time. He had spent money in an attempt to start a business which didn’t open and had no funds to address the losses.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that the defendant had an appalling record and a considerable amount of money was involved which he couldn’t ignore as he imposed a nine month prison sentence.

Students host business presentation: Dundalk Grammar School 5th Year Business students hosted a Business Presentation Event in the school on Monday May 9. The purpose of the afternoon was to present reports to a range of local businesses, which the students had researched and written up. The invited guests were drawn from the respective businesses. Following a reception, reports were presented, where the students and a representative from each business spoke.

The Event concluded with awards presented for the Best Individual and Best Group Reports. It was an uplifting and inspiring afternoon, where the worlds of business and education came together.

Both businesses and students celebrated the work of the students bearing fruit.

As part of their Travel Action Plan, the school had to set their own travel targets, with the ultimate aim of increasing the number of pupils walking, cycling, park ‘n’ stride or carpooling.

school included a monthly “Golden Boot” award for the class who made the most effort to walk or cycle to school, a walkability and cyclability audit for travel to and from school, road safety training and cycle

Avoided conviction after error A man who was over the limit for driving avoided a conviction following an error by Gardai when issuing the certificate containing his breath test results.

Michael Murphy of 17 McShane’s Road, Silverbridge, Armagh, was arrested on December 12 last year at Dromiskin after he came to the attention of Gardai.

A breath test taken at Dundalk Garda Station indicated that he was over the limit.

Fís exhibition at DkIT The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology is delighted to announce the launch of Fís 16 taking place on Wednesday 1 June at 6pm in the Carroll Building.

Dearbhla bids for Macra title All roads lead to Athboy for the upcoming June Bank Holiday weekend to support local lady Dearbhla O’Connor who is representing Fane Bridge Macra na Feirme at The Blue Jean Country Queen Festival.

This is an annual event hosted by Meath Macra na Feirme and runs from Friday June 3 to Monday June

6. The Blue Jean Country Queen Festival has been running in Athboy since 1987 and each year Queens gather from all over Ireland and even further afield to celebrate what has become a much loved tradition in County Meath.

Dearbhla who hails from Dromiskin joined Fane Bridge Macra two years

ago after having attended numerous Macra events with friends and relations.

Dearbhla is an exceptionally talented musician and sports person and in a short space of time, has become a very valuable and key member of the Fane Bridge branch.

Although fun is the name of the game, Dearbhla and

the other Queens will be competing for some wonderful prizes. First place receives prizes to the value of €1,000 and the title of Blue Jean Country Queen 2016.

Wants to deal with drugs problems A heroin addict whose young child was taken into care told Dundalk District Court that she is using that difficulty as a motivation to deal with her drug problems.

Nadine Taggart of 28 Oakdale Park, Bay Estate, Dundalk, asked for the opportunity to show that she is attempting to address the issues facing her when she pleaded guilty to a number of theft charges.

The court heard that she took items valued at €10 from a shop on Earl St on April 4 this year, while on May 9 she stole a handbag from an office at the Louth County Hospital containing £60 and €23. She admitted taking

the money which was not recovered. She also took items from Dunnes Stores in the Marshes valued at €10.

On December 12 last year, Gardai received a report of theft of a handbag from a pub on Clanbrassil St by a woman with a buggy. They located Ms Taggart who had the bag but €150 was missing along with a €20 note from a wallet belonging to the owner’s late husband. The defendant was also found with a phone and cigarettes which were missing from the bag. The money was not recovered.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that the reason his client was before the court was that she is a

heroin addict and although she is trying to deal with it, that is what caused her to offend. He added that the 25-year-old, who had no previous convictions, lost her partner to suicide in the last six months.

She is currently on a methadone programme and her child had been taken into care, and that is her motivation for staying off drugs. Mr Lavery asked for a Probation Report as he believed this would show that she will deal with her problems and that she would address compensation in the matter.

Judge Flann Brennan put the case back to September 7 for a report.

First Responders seek volunteers

Dundalk First Responders are appealing for more volunteers to come forward to assist in emergency situations.

The group are in need of extra volunteers to provide cover when other members may be unavailable.

Barry Hennessy of Dundalk First Responders explained how important the role of a volunteer is.

“If one or two of our key vol-

unteers go down we will miss an emergency where someone may die that could have been saved. We know we cannot save everyone and that in the majority of cases the paramedics will arrive and we are not needed”, explained Barry.

Training time for a CFR volunteer is approximately four to six hours and is free for volunteers. A volunteer chooses when it is convenient for them

Grammar TY students reflect on great year

Dundalk Grammar School held its annual Transition Year Finale Night on Thursday May 19. The event was for students and parents alike to see everything that had been achieved at the end of the year. Many of the students talked about their experiences during the year, such as trips to Donegal and Italy, while others talked about their work placements.

In addition to presentations from students, there were certificates awarded to students for participating in various courses over the year, such as a communica-

tions course, an after school class in Mandarin Chinese, and courses in sailing and horse riding. There was also a band at the event, comprised of Transition Year Students that played songs for the dance acts of the night.

Various successes of the students over the year were also celebrated, such as those who had won medals in the recent triathlon. There were 12 medals awarded to Dundalk Grammar students, which included the top six places.

Students also talked about the work they had done throughout the school term, such as the F1 team, who competed in the F1

After the presentations from various students, gifts were given to the form teachers of each class, and also to the headmaster of the school, Cyril Drury, who will be leaving his position at the end of the school year.

First anniversary for Parkrun Every Saturday morning for the past 11 months in DKIT sports grounds the gates open to volunteers and park runners in all weathers to run, jog or walk the 5km route.

Parkun is a community run for the community and is a free timed run which has become popular since it started in June 2015.

Originally set up by Carmel Drumgoole with the support of

Derek Crilly, DKIT, Louth Sports Partnership, and Tesco Extra, Dundalk it is now run

by Sarah McEneaney who is delighted with the reaction to Parkrun in Dundalk.

“On June 4 Dundalk parkrun will celebrate its first anniversary and would like to welcome everyone to run, jog, walk, volunteer or even come and support the park runners.

“We will be having

cake, tea/coffee and also will present the prizes for our yearly points competition,” stated Sarah.

Anyone can register for free at http://www. parkrun.ie/register/ and print off their personal barcode which they need every week to receive their result.
