Two talented young sport stars underlined their huge potential when they enjoyed success on the national stage in recent days.

Golfer, Josh Mackin, and footballer Liadán Clynch grabbed the headlines when they claimed silverware in their respective sports.

Dundalk Golf Club’s Josh followed in the footsteps of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell by capturing the Ulster Boys U18 Championship, while Liadán helped the Republic of Ireland U-15 schools squad

to success in an international event.

The 17-year-old Josh produced three excellent rounds at Donegal Golf Club to win the 54hole event by five shots and capture his second provincial title, having won the Leinster Boys U16 title in 2017.

He opened with a five under par 68 and followed up with a 74 to keep himself in contention, before claiming a memorable victory on the final day.

Dundalk Stadium have welcomed a report which has concluded that their allweather racing track is ‘highly satisfactory’.

The track has been receiving criticism from a number of jockeys and trainers in recent

months who claimed that the track was dangerous and was causing horses to get injured. The track which was laid down in 2007 is ‘riding too fast’ according to a number of trainers including Sheila Lavery who has boycotted it over safety worries.

According to a statement released by Dundalk Stadium they have received assurances following an expert inspection that the track is ‘highly satisfactory’.

“Dundalk Stadium has received ‘a highly satisfactory’ report on the condition of its allweather horseracing track at Racecourse Road following an expert inspection carried out by one of the world’s leading authorities on artificial

all-weather horseracing tracks.

“The inspection, which takes place annually, was completed on Thursday 18th April last by Berkshire-based Martin Collins Enterprises Limited, under the personal hand of the company’s managing director, Martin Collins. The post-inspection report produced

by Martin Collins confirms that, in its present condition, the Dundalk track is ‘both safe and

consistent’, adding that ‘maintenance continues to be carried out in accordance with our guidelines’.

“Though 12 years old, the report notes that the track still has ‘elasticity’. As was the case in 2015 Martin Collins recommends that fibre be added to the surface this summer as part of the track’s annual maintenance.

In a personal comment accompanying the report, Martin Collins

said: ‘I am constantly visiting different allweather racecourses around the world and Dundalk continues to be one of the most consistent tracks that I see for its age’.

“Mindful that frequency of use is an additional factor that can have a direct bearing on track condition, Martin Collins expressed himself ‘surprised’ that Dundalk would encounter any criticism. In this

regard, Collins claims that Dundalk remains one of the lesser-used, all-weather racecourses, quoting figures showing that - while it has raced approximately 400 times in 12 years - the Tapeta track at Wolverhampton has raced 400 times in 5 years and Kempton has

raced over 1,000 times in 13 years.

“Tenders have been invited for the installation of the replacement track and in line with the expert advice available to Dundalk the intention is to complete its installation in May/ June 2020,” concluded the statement.

U15 school’s squad as Richard Berkeley’s side returned from Salou with both the John Reed cup and the Bob Docherty trophy.

Liadán a student at Bush Post Primary is only 14 years of age and will be eligible for the squad again next year.

The talented defender was a member of the Dundalk Schoolboys League squad that competed in last year’s Galway Cup and off the back of some fine performances there she was called up for an international friendly against Northern Ireland last month.

Having impressed the coaches during that game she was called up for the Republic of Ireland U15s school squad who travelled to Salou to take part in a six-team tournament which include Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and Gibraltar. Liadán was eased into the tour-

nament, coming off the bench in the opening match victory against Scotland but started the second match against England where the John Reed trophy was up for grabs.

Liadán played the full game as Ireland claimed the trophy thanks to a nailbiting 5-3 win on penalties after the game had finished 1-1.

That victory meant that Ireland needed to beat Gibraltar in their final match to retain the Bob Docherty cup and the girls in green did so with ease as Liadán played a starring role in a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

Bellurgan FC’s John Cotter was understandably proud of Liadán’s achievements with the national team while also sending congratulations from all at the club.

“We are all very proud of her here in Bellurgan. She has been with us since

under 8 level and she has always stood out amongst her age group.

To be honest she was always head and shoulders above all the lads going through the age groups and she has developed into an excellent left back.

“The way she reads the game means she is always on top of any dangerous situations and as well as that she has great timing and very good speed.

“She reminds me of a Paul McGrath or a Brian Gartland type defender and we were delighted if not surprised when she received her international call up.

To come back from your first international tournament with two trophies is fantastic and I’m sure there will be plenty more down the line for her.

“Everybody at the club is looking forward to seeing her progress over the next few years and we all wish her well,” stated John.

Josh follows in Rory’s footstepsC Dundalk Golf Club’s Josh Mackin has followed in the footsteps of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell by capturing the Ulster Boys U18 Championship.

The 17-year-old produced three excellent rounds at Donegal Golf Club to win the 54hole event by five shots and capture his second provincial title, having won the Leinster Boys U16 title in 2017.

Wet and windy weather coming in off the Atlantic Ocean greeted the players when they teed up for the final round on the Murvagh links and all the leaders struggled over the opening seven holes.

However, a strong back nine saw Mackin claim a memorable victory.

Mackin, who is now off scratch, was understandably delighted to claim his second provincial Boys title but admitted that the one

Candidate makes call for traffic calming measures

Seán Kelly, local election candidate in Dundalk-Carlingford electoral area, believes that the excessive speed of motorists along McSwiney St/Legion Ave needs to be addressed before there is a serious road accident.

“Locals like myself see this on a daily basis and ask ourselves will it take a serious road accident for the council to act? We require traffic calming measures to be put in place along the full stretch of this road and proper

signage to warn people of speed limits,” Seán stated.

He pointed out that there is a traffic calming measure at the junction with Culhane St in order to assist those traveling to and from the De La Salle and Castletown Girls primary schools but work is also needed at the junction with O’Hanlon Park/The Laurels which is currently a blind spot for traffic coming onto main road and this has been the scene of a number of road accidents in recent years.

Paddy Cheshire Memorial 5K

The Inaugural Paddy Cheshire Memorial 5K will be held on Saturday June 29 at 7pm.

In addition to being a long-standing member of the Sean O’Mahony’s, Paddy was a former chairman of Dún Dealgan Athletics Club.

His family remain involved in both the

football and athletics community in the northeast.

The race will take place in “The Quay” area of Dundalk, finishing on the iconic Navy Bank.

The course is flat, enabling good times and an opportunity for a personal best.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has announced the introduction of two new research and innovation initiatives to expand opportunities for its staff to participate in targeted industry engagement in the North Leinster South Ulster region. The DkIT Emerging Technology Fund and the DkITSponsored Postgraduate Scholarship with Industry aim to increase collaboration with regional industry and to augment the Institute’s track record for success in the areas of research and innovation.

involving emerging technology fields. The fund is prioritised for projects that that facilitate interdisciplinary research and creative collaborations that focus on the study and application of emerging tech-

nologies in addressing regional industry, public and individual needs.

The DkIT-Sponsored Postgraduate Scholarship with Industry offers staff the opportunity to apply for funded research Masters and/ or PhDs (Levels 9 and/ or 10) which have a particular focus on supporting regional industry. As part of the new scholarship programme, DkIT will cover programme fees and will provide an annual postgraduate stipend to scholars, in addition to other supports provided by selected industry partners. The new scholarship scheme will assist the continued growth of the Institute’s

postgraduate research output.

Both initiatives have been designed to bolster the Government’s National Research Priority Areas 2018-2023 with particular focus on driving regional growth opportunities in ICT, Health and Wellbeing, Food, Energy, Climate Action and Sustainability and Services & Business Processes.

The new schemes also compliment the DkIT Corporate Partnership Programme, a strategic initiative overseen the RDC which provides a structured framework for the institute to work with high profile organisations.

Breathnach condemns thugs who targeted elderly couple Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Declan Breathnach has said the targeting of elderly people in aggravated burglaries will not be tolerated.

Deputy Breathnach was commenting following the burglary of a couple in their 80s at their house in Blackrock Co. Louth.

Deputy Breathnach said, “The targeting of any individual or family in their

home is disgraceful, but it is particularly reprehensible when it is an elderly couple. What kinds of animals bring a hatchet, a knife and a hammer with them when robbing the house of a couple in their 80s?

“The couple were locked in a bedroom while the thugs helped themselves to their possessions. The impact of these kinds of attacks is dev-

astating both physically and psychologically. It creates a fear in communities that is very hard to shake and get over. The people of Louth will not tolerate this.

“In order to reassure older people that they will be safe in their own homes, Fianna Fáil has long proposed to implement mandatory minimum sentences for those convicted of assaults

on someone elderly. I firmly believe a zero tolerance response is needed for crimes such as these. Any person in possession of a knife intends to do harm in these circumstances. Mandatory sentencing and tighter bail laws are necessary.

“The Fianna Fáil Assaults on Older Persons Bill seeks to help and protect older people from assaults

and to toughen sentences on people convicted of assaulting an older person. It would send a clear message that these crimes will not be tolerated and ensure clear, transparent and consistent sentencing for such heinous assaults. I will be seeking assurances from Government that this Bill will be progressed”, concluded Deputy Breathnach.

Blackrock Tidy Towns sustainable living initiative Blackrock Tidy Towns will participate in the event at the Community Centre Sandy Lane on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6, as part of the country wide community initiative the Big Hello.

The theme will be ‘sustainable living’ a major facet of Tidy Towns’ ethos, introducing the Blackrock Conquering Climate Change initiative. The focus at this event will be in Electric Vehicles (EV).

During the day in the car park will be an assortment of EV’s, both fully electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in Electric Hybrid Vehicles (PEHV). The vehicles will be from both dealers and members of the public, who will display their own

vehicle and give real world experience of owning same. Blackrock Tidy Towns will proudly display an excellent example of an EV van, the Kangoo Van kindly loaned to Blackrock Tidy Towns by local Renault dealers Blackstone Motors. This replaces the old diesel van and will save 13 tonnes of CO2 a year; diesel produces 2.68 kg of C02 per litre.

All the incentives will be explained, from the SEAI grants, VRT discounts, car tax discounts, BIK discounts, reduced servicing costs, EBS Ecars strategy for charge points, etc, in order to help people to make a truly informed decision on their next car.

Old Dundalk Society Lecture

The Old Dundalk Society is delighted to announce the second lecture in their 2019 Spring season of lectures. The Lecture is entitled ‘Presbyterians in Dundalk and surrounding areas’.

This community has contributed much to the social and economic life of the Town. The lecture will be presented by local Dundalk

man Ken Ramsey. The lecture takes place in the County Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk, on Thursday May 2, commencing at 8pm. The audience will be guaranteed a stimulating, and interesting lecture. Patrons are advised to come early, as there is limited seating capacity available at the lecture venue.

Dundalk Artisans event at Tesco Community Centre Dundalk Artisans will display some of their paintings at a special event in the Tesco Community Rooms between May 4 and 6. The display will take place during the store’s opening hours and will include a whole host of paintings from the artisans. Everybody is welcome to pop in and look at the paintings which will be on display over the bank holiday weekend.

The Artisans are a group of amateur artists ranging from beginners to experts who meet up every Friday at 7:30pm in Carroll Meade Hall, Pearse Park.

They specialise in watercolour painting and are always on the lookout for new members.

Dundalk to host urban arts festival

Four third year DkIT nursing and midwifery students each received €1,500 to support their nursing and midwifery studies with a scholarship award provided by healthcare recruitment specialist, Servisource, Dundalk, DkIT Students Lisa Foster (BSc (Hons) in Psychiatric Nursing), Siobhan McBennett (BSc (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing), Martina Murphy (BSc (Hons) in Midwifery) and Dylan Gartland (BSc (Hons) in General Nursing) this week received the DkITServisource Scholarship.

Speaking on behalf of the Seek committee, Town Centre Commercial Manager, Martin McElligott, said he is delighted to announce the latest addition to their 2019 festival plan. The festival is centred around promoting visual arts in Dundalk over a five year period by commissioning established and emerging artists, locally, and nationally, to help promote the town culturally and artistically, repositioning the area as a vibrant hub for creativity.

Seek 2019 will highlight the important influence art can have in the public domain, its role as a catalyst for change, helping reinvigorate and refresh some of our town centre spaces. In turn the story

behind the artwork helps with both telling Dundalk’s story and connecting people to our heritage.

Local Artistic Curator, David Callan, explained that Dundalk has a wealth of history, with many historical layers throughout the ages which are being forgotten. The festival aims to communicate Dundalk’s unique stories, using the arts to reconnect with it.

Colourtrend paint will be our headline sponsor for the 2019 festival. Speaking on the partnership Managing Director of Colourtrend, Kevin O’Connor the company was delighted to support the initiative.

Tributes paid to outgoing councillors Dundalk Leader 1st May 2019

Tributes were paid to two outgoing local councillors who have racked up 60 years of public service between them.

Fianna Fail councillor Peter Savage and the Green Party’s Mark Dearey were presented with plaques and certificates to mark the end of their time in local office. Peter has served his community for 45 years and has been chair of Louth County Council no less than five times.

He was first elected in 1974 and he holds the record for longest serving county councillor in the country. Erin McGreehan has

been tasked with following in Peter’s footsteps and she will contest her first local election next month.

Meanwhile, Green Party councillor Mark Dearey who announced back in January that he would not be seeking reelection is also approaching the finishing line having first being elected to Dundalk Town Council in 2004.

The Omeath resident is well known around the town for his passion for green politics as well as being the owner of the hugely popular pub and music venue the Spirit Store.

In a short message earlier this

year he wrote ‘I won’t be running in the Local Elections later this year. It’s been a true honour to have served the people of the area this past 15 years.’

Green Party candidate Eoin Daly will be hoping to retain the seat for the party when Mark leaves next month. Mark and Peter were presented with their plaque and certificate by Louth County Council chairman Liam Reilly as well as County Manager Joan Martin.

Cross party tributes were paid to both men for all their tireless work they put in for their constituents since they first took up office.

A helping hand for Babs from Dundalk Lions Club Dundalk Lions Club had the great pleasure of presenting Babs Weiberg a cheque for €500 to help her on her way to the Blind/ Visually Impaired Tennis World Championship to be held in Spain in June. Blind/Visually impaired tennis has been played in Ireland since 2016 and the Dundalk Club started only in 2018. The group is based in the Dundalk Sports Centre and the sport is adapted from the full court version of tennis where the

players use an audible ball so that they can hear it bounce. Babs who has Type 1 Diabetes and has only 4% vision which is categorised as a B2 player in the classifications.

Dundalk Lion President John Hennessy stated: “We in Dundalk Lions Club wish Babs and the rest of the team the very best in Spain. Having met Babs I am sure she will do Dundalk and indeed Ireland proud and we wish her the very best of luck”.

Finding solutions to anti-social behaviour issues in Bay Estate is now the focus of the newly-established neighbourhood watch group, Cllr.

Ruairí Ó Murchú says.

The Sinn Féin councillor helped organise a meeting at Scoil Mhuire na nGael on Wednesday where residents and parents of children at the school heard from recently appointed Juvenile Liaison Office Garda Paul Burke about drug taking and drug dealing.

Cllr. Ó Murchú said: ‘At the last meeting of this new neighbourhood watch group, it was clear there was interest from parents and residents about having an information meeting with Gardaí and I was very pleased that Garda Burke facilitated this and grateful to Scoil Mhuire na nGael for offering the building to host it.

‘It was a very informative meeting where Garda Burke talked in a very direct, accessible way about the drugs and the signs of drug taking and dealing we need to look out for. He also

spoke about the dangers of alcohol misuse’.

Following the presentation, residents raised a number of issues about drug dealing and anti social behaviour specific to the area and spoke about previous difficulties they had experienced when trying to highlight them to Gardaí and Louth County Council.

Cllr. Ó Murchú said: ‘What has happened in the past has happened, but the focus now for the group is about finding solutions to some of the issues raised.

‘We are happy to hear that efforts will be made in the coming days to get the stakeholders, including the Gardaí and council officials, around the table to talk about the responses needed.

‘This community engagement vehicle has worked in other areas and I am positive that it will provide a good way for residents in Bay Estate to get their concerns aired and dealt with’.

More needs to be done to combat sheep being killed by dogs LOUTH IFA Rural Development Chairman Matthew McGreehan has welcomed the recent decline in sheep being attacked by dogs but has warned that laws must be updated to help combat the problem. This year has been particularly bad for farmers with more than fifty sheep killed in the Cooley area alone since the start of the year.

According to Matthew the last few weeks have seen a lull in the amount of attacks but he warned farmers to remain vigilant and urged the country’s lawmakers to put measures in place to help eradicate the problem.

“It may sound dramatic but sheep farmers, especially those in North Louth are under siege from dogs attacking their flocks. We have had a number of incidents this year and something needs to be done to protect farmers livelihoods. The laws around dog licensing and

microchipping need to be tightened so that if a dog is caught killing a sheep he can be traced back to it’s owner who will then be obliged to pay the farmer compensation,” explained Matthew.

“There are simple things which can be done to improve things such as joining up the dog license and microchipping databases so that they can be used together to help locate the owner of a dog. Dog owners need to be responsible and make sure they know where their dogs are at all times. There used to be an ad on television about responsible dog ownership in the 1980’s and we have been calling on the government to re-run this campaign.

The ad already exists so why not use it?,” asked Matthew.

“Unfortunately, it can prove very difficult to get in touch with a dog’s owner even if they are microchipped. If I have a dog and I get him or her micro-

chipped and then go on to sell the dog there is currently no onus on the new owner to get the contact details changed. If that dog attacks a sheep the microchip will lead the farmer back to me even though I no longer own the dog. There needs to be a system like when you are selling a car that there is a legal requirement to change the details before you can drive the car on the road.

“There also needs to be more co-operation between the authorities in the north and south.

If a dog from the north comes down and kills a sheep in the south or vice versa there need to be channels where authorities down here can check databases up in the north to try and get to the bottom of who owns the dog. These are all simple ideas that need to be looked at sooner rather than later. The problem seems to be getting worse each year and farmers need help,” stated Matthew.

St Vincent’s school basketball squad had a great win recently when the first year team made it through to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

The team travelled to Crossmolina, Co.Mayo along with their coaches and teachers Maurice Woods and Edel McNulty to take part in the AllIreland play-offs.

They showed great determination and skill as they defeated both Gortnor Abbey Crossmolina and Dungannon Academy to set up a winnertakes-all-final game against St Mary’s CBS Naas.

The girls played brilliantly in a nail biting game which ended with St. Vincent’s winning with a score line of 40-39. The girls now play in the All Ireland Semi-final in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght on May 2.

The Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) is holding a series of Bag Packs to help raise awareness and funds for Family Addiction Support Network in June and would love to hear from anyone interested in helping for a couple of hours. Cúchulainn Players Cúchulainn Players will stage their 2019 Comedy in the Spirit Store on Monday May 6 to Wednesday May 8, each night at 8.30pm, with doors opening at 8pm.

The theme this year is what people both say to those in their company and what is really in their heads to say but are too polite or politically correct to say.

Set in a drinking establishment, it takes ordinary ‘types’.....the loners, the bar-flies, the gossips and assorted odd-balls whose conversations and ‘ thoughts’ we get to hear as they wind their way irreverently through an evening’s ‘socialising’. Populated by a cast of veterans of Dundalk theatre groups, this production promises to provide some interesting moments of reflection on 21st Century behaviour.

Music Generation stage Spring Showcase concert Groups from Music Generation Louth’s String Orchestra Programme performed at St Nicholas’ Church of Ireland, Dundalk in a lunchtime concert for family and friends on Saturday April 6.

The String Orchesta Programme was founded in 2012 by Music Generation Louth and is under the direction of local musician Jayne Graham. This wonderfully polished lunchtime performance demonstrated the quality of the training provided to the children and young people involved.

The First Strings group opened the concert with three beautifully executed pieces under the direction of musician Clare Sweeney.

This was followed by a lovely violin duet played by Senior Strings

members Éilis Duffy and Cliodhna McCusker.

Staying within the world of strings, but diverting away from the violin family for a short spell, the audience were then treated to a harp duet played by Grace Connolly and Zoe Hennessy. Both girls learn harp with Music Generation Louth and also play violin in MGL’s Senior Strings Orchestra.

Next to perform was MGL’s Junior Strings Orchestra under the baton of musician Helen McArdle who had stepped in to assist with the orchestra this term.

Senior Strings players took their places on stage to conclude the concert.

They performed two challenging works with panache, Basse Danse from Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite and Jig from Holst’s St Paul’s

Suite. Conducted by Clare Sweeney, the standard of playing from this group was truly breathtaking.

The programme is now on break until September when rehearsals will resume for First and Junior Strings each Saturday at Wellington Hall and Senior Strings once monthly on Sundays.

LSPCA Annual Meeting

On Wednesday 17th April the Louth Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals (LSPCA) held its AGM in the Tesco Community Room Dundalk. Election of officers was as follows: Chairperson - Paul Casey; Secretary - Olwen Matthews; Treasurer - Cait Monagher; Assistant Treasurer -Anna Krok; PRO - Oliver Morgan. The meeting reflected on the year gone by and the society expressed its sincere gratitude to all its sponsors and supporters without whom the society would not survive.

The society endeavours to help all animals dogs, cats, goats and swans etc and our voluntary honorary inspector, Fiona Squibb, travels the county in response to their needs. The Louth SPCA meets on the third Wednesday of every month in Byrne’s Pub, Hill Street. All welcome.

Six projects from Louth at Foróige Youth Awards Six projects from Louth took part in the Aldi Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards in the National Indoor Arena, Blanchardstown, Dublin on Saturday April 13.More than 2,000 young people, representing every county in the Republic of Ireland, descended on the National Sports Campus to celebrate and showcase their community action projects at the Awards.

220 youth groups took part, having worked on Citizenship Projects focused on improving the entrants’ local communities in areas such as equality, homelessness, climate change, social inclusion, community events, mental health and culture.

The Louth projects included Ardee Foróige Club who carried out a garden renovation project in the local nursing home.

Nursing Home, they discovered the garden badly needed a revamp. They spoke with the patients to find out what colours and flowers they like, and spoke with a horticulturalist to see what was possible. Over five weeks, the group swept, power-washed, painted and planted flowers. At the end, they opened the garden with a party for the patients and their families, and in December hosted a carol

service with presents for all the patients.

Meanwhile, the Ardee Foroige Club Juniors undertook an environmental improvement and spring clean project After brainstorming ideas, the young people decided to undertake an environmental improvement project in their locality. They surveyed the area to assess the current litter and recycling facilities.

Through the project

they learned that there was very little knowledge in the local community about what is needed to maintain the local environment. They decided to increase awareness about the importance of recycling by creating posters and leaflets to distribute in the community. The also linked in with the local council to increase the number of bins, and organised a spring clean in the town.

Dundalk Golf Club is celebrating on the double with Josh Mackin winning the Ulster Boys Championship at Donegal Golf Club last week and Brendan Lawlor finishing second in the Pas de Calais Handigolf Open, the first event on the 2019 European Disabled Golfers Tour.

With Caolan Rafferty’s win in the West of Ireland and Eoin Murphy’s success in the Hilary Society, it’s been a good start to 2019 for the club’s elite players.

It was a good weekend too for Frank Byrne who was part of the club’s Fred Perry team that reached the third round of this new national competition following their 4-1 win over Greenore on Friday.

On Sunday, Byrne, who plays off eight, won the first Golfer of the Year competition of the season when he shot a five under par 67 to claim the Paddy Markey Cup. He was one shot ahead of five handicapper Alan Hurley while Club President, Dessie Ward (13) claimed the Veterans Prize with a level par 72.
