The Birches facing a funding crisis

The Birches Alzheimer Day Centre is facing a funding crisis and needs to raise €90k this year to continue to provide the vital service to the community.

The centre has been forced to cut essential services over the past number of months due to a continued cut in funding from the HSE and funds are needed urgently to keep the fiveday service open.

Mary Gaughran, Secretary of the North Louth Branch of the Alzheimers Society, outlined the bleak prospect facing the centre which has been very popular since opening its doors in June 2000.

“The five per cent reduc-

tion year on year from HSE funding has left us in a situation where we have to review the local services.

“The home to home overnight care which was so essential for carers is lost, while the Saturday service, which was introduced to reduce the waiting list was discontinued from December 31”, explained Mary.

To make matters worse for the organisation, this difficulty comes at a time when demand for the services is on the increase.

O Fiaich are crowned Sky Sports champions Dundalk’s Ó Fiaich College is celebrating a major success after being crowned 2015 Sky Sports Living for Sport Project of the Year winner in a ceremony on Sky Sports 1.

Over 1000 Sky Sports Living for Sport projects were completed across Ireland and the UK last year and the Dundalk school beat off stiff competition to claim the award.

Students and their teacher from Ó Fiaich College, as well as their Sky Sports Living for Sports Athlete Mentor and Modern Pentathlete Natalya Coyle, were at the Sky Sports Studio in London this weekend as part of the awards.

The school appeared live on Sky Sports’ Game Changers on Saturday and had a special tour of Sky Sports

News HQ. However, it was while they were on Soccer AM that they were surprised with their award from presenters Max Rushwell, Helen Chambelain and Tubes, which includes £2,000 towards their next Sky Sports Living for Sport programme in addition to the trophy.

Sky Sports Living for Sport is a free secondary schools initiative that uses sports stars and sports skills to boost confidence, change behaviours and improve life skills, and over 175 schools in Ireland have already experienced the benefits of the programme. Ó Fiaich College received the Project of the Year award for successfully setting up a Sky Sports Living for Sport project to encour-

age goal-setting and raise motivation levels amongst their students.

At the start of the project, each student set their own goal and outlined how they planned on improving themselves both physically and behaviourally in the coming 10 weeks.

Each Wednesday, the group worked on a different sport – from rugby union and football to boxing and tennis – and the students’ involvement and enthusiasm throughout was unprecedented compared with any previous extracurricular activity the school had carried out.

By the end of the 10 weeks, all 19 participating students had improved their attendance in school and have since steered clear of any kind of misbehaviour.

One student whose at-

tendance was only 20% before getting involved with Sky Sports Living for Sport was particularly affected and did not miss a single day throughout the project.

Discussing O Fiaich College’s win teacher Brendan O’Malley said, “Winning Project of the Year is an amazing honour. This highlights the hard work and effort shown by all students and proves that effort and positive attitude, results in success.

“The group of students are an amazing bunch of young people and are overwhelmed with this accolade.

We have had many memorable experiences throughout this project, including our exciting trip to Sky’s studios in London, and this win tops off an unforgettable year”.

Men’s Sheds golf classic The very first Men’s Shed Golf Classic will take place on Friday May 15 in Blackrock Golf course with prizes and entertainment guaranteed on the day.

The classic is one of a number of fundraisers organised for the Men’s Sheds during May and it is hoped that the event will be supported by the local community. Terry Dillon who is helping to organise the event says that fundraisers like this are vital for the Men’s Sheds to survive having had their funding cut in 2013.

“It costs €160 for a four person team and you will get a meal and entertainment along with that”, explained Terry.

There will be prizes for longest drive, nearest the pin and there will also be a hole in one tournament which

costs €5 to enter with the winner taking home the total pot.

St Vincent’s Gaeilge students enjoyed huge success recently in The Cumann Scoildrámaíochta national drama festival.

The competition aims to promote drama through the Irish language amongst both primary and secondary school students, under the patronage of the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

Regional, provincial and national festivals are held annually and this was the school’s first time taking part in the event.

Students from 2 MacCuarta class performed the drama ‘O la la’ at the first round which was held locally in DkIT, while girls from 2 Kavanagh and 1 Orla performed ‘Amuigh faoin Speir’.

The latter group impressed the adjudicator Frances Quinn who nominated them

With the support and guidance of their Irish teachers Susan Wallace and Stephanie Morris the successful group have

progressed to the Chraobh Náisiúnta or National Final which will be held at the end of April.

Ms Wallace commended all the girls on their hard work and dedication, and in particular wanted to wish

actresses Tara Mackin, Denise Wals, Zara Wadding, Jade O’Donnell, Niamh Matthews, Ava Tinsley and Brunelle Fadahunsi, along with their team of extras and stage organisers the very best of luck.

Man has a bad record for driving offences A man who was described as having a bad record for driving offences was disqualified from driving for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Anthony Martin of Shanmullagh, Hackballscross, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving without insurance.

Gardai came across the scene of a traffic accident at Hackballscross and

after speaking to the driver they formed an opinion and Mr Martin was taken to Dundalk Garda Station. A breath sample revealed that he was over the limit for driving.

The court heard that the 32-year-old defendant, who had previous convictions for dangerous driving and hit and run, had recently started his own business where he employs three people.

Defence barrister stated that Mr Martin recognises that what he did was stupid and he will have to make arrangements for work which is an hour’s drive away.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €300 fine and three year ban for drink driving and on the no insurance charge he imposed a €200 fine and three year disqualification.

The ban was postponed until September 18.

DKIT have showed their support for a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming Marriage Referendum on May 22 by putting up a rainbow flag in front of the college. The flag is a worldwide sym-

bol for LGBT pride and was put up last Monday ahead of the upcoming referendum.

Before erecting the flag the Students Union set a target of 1000 signatures to highlight the support for the initiative throughout the campus.

Students Union president Brian Fitzpatrick was delighted with the response received from students throughout the college noting that the union received over 1700 signatures in just one day.

Global Awareness-raising Campaign on Laundry detergent capsules/packets

There were 191 cases of injury from exposure to laundry capsules in Ireland in 2013 (OECD figures) and 81% of them related to children between 1 and 3 years old. 60% of the cases related to liquid capsules, which account for 15-20% of the market for such products in Ireland.

The campaign The campaign aims to inform consumers, especially parents, to safely use and store laundry detergent capsules, keeping them away from children; businesses are asked to follow/share safety related best practices as well as to help raise awareness on the safe use of laundry capsules. The European Commission recently adopted a Regulation on additional safety measures for liquid laundry detergents capsules, which will apply as from 1 June 2015.

The product and the hazards Laundry detergent liquid capsules/packets contain concentrated detergent for single use. The content, protected by a membrane, is released once it comes in contact with the moisture during a washing.

Yet, laundry detergent liquid capsules/packets are small, tactile and often colourful, which makes them attractive to children, especially toddlers, who are tempted to put them in the mouth or play with them. A laundry liquid capsule can burst in a child's hand, especially when it is wet or moist. It can also rapidly dissolve with moisture and may burst in a child's mouth in as little as ten seconds, which can cause severe injuries.

The main consequences of exposure can be: • In case of ingestion: severe vomiting, coughing, respiratory disorders, nausea, drowsiness and rash.

• In case of contact with the eyes: conjunctivitis, pain in the eye, eye irritation.

• In case of contact with the skin: rash, skin irritation, chemical burn.

Safety messages for parents and carers SAFE STORAGE • Store these products up high, out of reach and out of sight of children; • If stored in lower accessible cabinets/cupboards, these should be secured with child resistant locks; • Keep the capsules/packets in their original container, fully closed between uses.

SAFE USE • Carefully read the labels on the packaging; • Do not use the capsules/packets while children are close by and do not allow or invite children to manipulate them; • Never pierce or break laundry capsules/packets; • Do not leave the capsules/packets outside their container; • Close the container lid properly after every use.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF EXPOSURE In case of a child’s accidental exposure: • If the capsule/packet is put in the mouth, rinse the child’s mouth and face thoroughly; • Do not induce vomiting; • If a child has capsule liquid close to eyes or on hands, rinse carefully with plenty of water • Call a doctor, or a Poison Control Centre or go to the medical emergency department.

Drove to Garda Station after night out A man who had been out drinking drove his car to Dundalk Garda Station to report an incident that had occurred on the way home from a nightclub.

While at the station car park, the Porsche driven by Gerard Meehan of West Tce, Parnell Park, Dundalk, collided with an unmarked patrol car, resulting in him being charged with drink driving.

A breath test revealed that Mr Meehan was over the limit for driving, the defendant escaped a conviction after the prosecuting Garda was unable to give the time of driving in evidence.

The court heard from a Garda that he entered the car park at Dundalk Garda Station at 2.55am on September 21 last year.

He observed a black Porsche

in the car park which had collided with an unmarked patrol car.

He added that the defendant, who then came out of the station, was there in relation to an incident which occurred on his way home from a nightclub.

The Garda stated that there was a smell of alcohol from the defendant who said that he was the driver of the vehicle. As a

result he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. A breath test was taken which showed he was over the limit.

However, the Garda stated that he did not see the defendant driving the car and that he could not give a time of driving.

This point was raised by the defence barrister with the result that Judge Flann Brennan dismissed the case.

Louth travel to Ennis and bring home success News Louth were reprein Brief sented by two teams of six at the All Ireland Inter-counties Youth Darts competiton in Ennis recently. The teams were divided between players who had attended before and those who were first time attendees.

Mark Connolly, Robert Connolly, David Andrews, David Lambe, Paul Maguire and Jason Finnegan were Louth’s 1st team while Alan Smyth, Liam Kindlon, Conor Murtagh, Kyle Costigan Aidan O’Brien and Aaron Finnegan made up the second team .

After some very good darts on the day Louth were unfortunate not to make it into the quarter finals of the Championship competition but instead went into the draw for the shield competition.

The draw saw Louth (1) play Tipperary’s second team and this game was to set a trend because Louth went 2-1

The semi final saw Louth play Donegal and once again Louth had to show character and come from behind and secure their place in an All Ireland Final where they would have to play on the main stage at a national event.

The whole Louth Contingent hit the roof when the winning double was hit and Louth had succeeded in reaching the final against Limerick.

The game was flowing well and once again Louth were 2-1 down

when Robert Connolly played an exceptional game to put Jason Finnegan in for the final match. In what was a brilliant exhibition of Youth Darts both players pushed each other right to the very end with the game going to the last game and last leg.

A missed dart at a double which was right on the wire of double ten was to cost Louth as Limerick hit the winning Double in the next throw to claim the title of All Ireland Shield winners 2015.

St Nicholas pupils feed the lambs at school

For the past month the children in Senior Infants and First class in St Nicholas Primary School have been observing signs of spring.

As they were discussing how busy the farmers were with lambs and calves the staff asked a local farmer to visit. The

farmer brought in two lambs, Bourneville and Oreo, who are sisters, two of quads. The farmer was very lucky this year as there were three sets of quads born on his farm.

The farmer explained the lifestyle of sheep and all the children got a chance to pet the lambs. They

fed the lambs with nuts and gave them a bottle feed. He explained that the mother sheep eats sileage and grass and he brought some in to show the children.

The children really enjoyed the visit as they seldom get a chance to handle baby animals.

Local adult learners feature on national TV "Get the Numbers, Write" is a three-part series on TV3 that follows the lives of five local adult learners who have returned to education and are currently attending the LMETB Adult Learning Service. The programme aims to highlight the issue of literacy and numeracy among adults.

The series started on Monday 30th March at 9 pm with a numeracy project in Navan. Episode two, on 6th April at 9pm focuses on a reading project in Dundalk and Tallanstown.

While, episode three on 13th April at 9pm is based around a writing project and is set in Drogheda.

Cost of sludge clean-up on the rise

The cost to the taxpayer for removing toxic sludge in the county continues to rise with newly released figures showing an increase of over €56,000 for the first three months of 2015 when compared to the opening quarter of 2014.

It cost €81,352 to dispose of 60,000 litres of toxic sludge from January to March in 2014 while that figure almost doubled for the same period in

2015 with €137,510 spent to remove 156,000 litres of toxic sludge.

The figures released this week by Louth County Council show that there were a similar number of incidents in the opening three months of both years (28 this year compared to 25 last year) but a significant difference in the amount of sludge found due to the discovery of two forty foot trailers earlier this year.

The toxic sludge is believed

to be a by-product of illegal diesel laundering and Co Louth has become a dumping ground for the fuel launderers who continue to cost the council millions in clean up fees.

Local sports clubs in Co Louth have been encouraged to apply for funding from this year’s Sports Capital Programme. Last year €1,054,444 was handed out to local sports clubs which offered them a fantastic opportunity to improve their facilities.

The Sports Capital Programme aims to foster an integrated and planned approach to developing sports and physical recreation facilities throughout the country. In particular, its objectives are to assist voluntary and community organisations, national governing bodies (NGBs) of sport, local authorities and in some cases VECs and schools to develop high quality, safe, well-designed,

sustainable facilities in appropriate locations.

Nh Fionnbarra, St Mochtas and Na Piarsaigh GAA clubs were amongst last years big winners along with Dundalk Tennis Club with each organisation receiving over €100,000 each.

Registration is now open and can be done through the official website www. sportscapitalprogramme.ie. It will remain open until Friday April 10 at 5pm and all clubs are urged to register as soon as possible. Once registered clubs must then apply for funding from the sports capital programme. The deadline for the application process is April 24 at 5pm.

Man’s behaviour was extremely reckless A man who was described as being ‘extremely reckless’ told Dundalk District Court that he was unaware that the car he was being allowed drive for work reasons, had been stolen.

Michael Connolly of 64 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk was described as being desperate for work as he was paying for his daughter’s wedding.

As a result he took the work and car from the man who couldn’t be traced

by Gardai.

Dundalk District Court heard that on June 4, 2013, the car came to the attention of Gardai and after stopping

the driver noticed that there were errors on the documents on the windscreen.

Further investigations revealed that the car had been stolen from Co Meath and insurance had been paid out. Mr Connolly was subsequently arrested and charged with no insurance , custody of a false instrument and possession of property without lawful excuse.

Barrister, David Costello, stated that his client had been very naïve but that he had been given the car for work. He provided a name to Gardai but this man could not be found.

He added that Mr Connolly had previously worked was a taxi driver and that he wouldn’t have had to check cars that were provided to him. The 42-year-old father of seven, accepted that he was reckless in not checking the details.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a three month sentence which he suspended for three months, while in relation to the no insurance charge he found the facts proven and dismissed.

“This is a very serious matter and he should have been more careful. He was extremely reckless”, stated the judge.

The Birches Alzheimer facing a funding crisis The Birches Alzheimer Day Centre is facing a funding crisis and needs to raise €90k this year to continue to provide the vital service to the community.

The centre has been forced to cut essential services over the past number of months due to a continued cut in funding from the HSE and funds are needed urgently to keep the five-day service open.

Mary Gaughran, Secretary of the North Louth Branch of the Alzheimers Society, outlined the bleak prospect facing the centre which has been very popular since opening its doors in June 2000.

“The five per cent reduction year on year from HSE funding has left us in a situation where we have to review the local services.

“The home to home overnight care which was so essential for carers is lost, while the Saturday service, which was introduced to reduce the waiting list was discontinued from December 31”, explained Mary.

To make matters worse for the organisation, this difficulty comes at a time when demand for the services is on the increase.

Shortly after the Birches first opened, the average number of clients per week was 45, but last year that had increased to 78, while there have been a total of 39,177 client days from 2002 to 2014.

On a positive note, the Outreach Day Centre in Rath Abbey, Grange, which catered for 293 client days last year, will continue every Monday as it is almost self-funding.

“Since June 2000 the people of North Louth have raised €1.5m that has allowed us to have the standard of care we have at the present time and we really can’t thank them enough.

“Unfortunately we have a situation now that if we don’t raise €90k we will be in the red so we are asking that any groups or individuals to consider running an event or making a donation to help us continue this service.

I can assure everyone that every

euro raised for the Birches goes to the Birches and that volunteers are totally voluntary”, continued Mary, who pointed out that the two main fundraisers, Tea Day in May and the Mini Marathon in June are fast approaching.

“The waiting list is getting longer and we want to be able to facilitate the increased numbers”, she added.

Olive Joyce, nurse manager at the centre, revealed that there are over 42,000 people diagnosed with dementia in Ireland, which may only represent the tip of the iceberg, making centres like the Birches essential for both clients and their families.

Great action in darts league

Despite the counter-attraction of the Professional Darts Corporation event in the 3 Arena, the local Tuborg Dundalk & District Darts League continued with some great action over the weekend.

The Premier Division saw Harry’s Bar take on Stags Green and this was a game which was a victim of the PDC fever but it was a great game. The game started with Frankie O’Hagan who recently turned 73 playing for Harry’s against Stephen Kells.

The Meath man won the first game for the Stags but that was as good as it got for the visiting team . Harry’s went on to record a good win.

In the Dirst Division The Fane Bar have been in hot pursuit since the league began and they were facing the division’s draw specialists in Courtneys and once again the result ended honours even.

Meanwhile Stags “Blue” team and Kehoes kept in the hunt for silverware by sharing the points in their game in the Stags Head.

Johnny Masons had a troublesome start to the season but last

year’s divisional winners have started to find form and kept on the winning trail by beating the Malthouse Misfits in the Malthouse.

The re-signing of Martin “The Pup” McCartney for Johnny Masons has been a masterstroke and he has started to show some of the quality that had him such a successful player in the Old Dundalk and District Darts league in the late Nineties.

The Commercial Hawks travelled out to Fergusons in Gyles Quay but lost out to a Fergusons team who are still chasing the Stags White for top spot.

Fergusons won 4-2 but the Stags White were determined to go one better and got a 5-1 result against the Punters Dragons. Tom Byrne was Man of the match for the Stags team and he thoroughly deserved it with a very steady game.

The Third Division has the Windmill Warriors on top of the table and they travelled to Brady’s of Clanbrassil street to play the Ladies team who have not managed to get their first win.

ers and won the game 5-1 with Kate McKenna winning for Brady’s B .

The other team from Brady’s travelled to Fintan Callans and were unlucky to come up against a team who seem to be finding their form. Rodney McLoughlin was the star of the show for the team from the Castleblayney Road venue with a great show of scoring ability including hitting a maximum 180 on the night.

He was pushed all the way by John Flynn who is another player who is returning to the game after a few years break.

The next week of fixtures sees the start of the Andrew McAlester Open Shield with teams from different divisions meeting for the first time this year.

It is always a competition that throws up a few shocks and the results will be watched patiently by all.

Ardee school raises fifth Green Flag Struck cyclist

Monastery National School Ardee raised its Green Flag for Biodiversity on Wednesday March 25 and opened their new outdoor mural. The school’s fifth Green flag was raised

by Sharon Callis who painted the school’s striking Outdoor Classroom Wall Mural which shows the passing of the four seasons through a picturesque countryside landscape.

The ceremony began at the mural where the school’s tin whistle group, along with Master Woods opened proceedings with a delightful tune. Brendan Matthews, Ardee Tidy Towns and members of the school community were welcomed by school principal, Jim McGee and teacher Ms McKeown.

Members of the School’s Green Committee spoke about their appreciation for Mrs.

Callis’ efforts in painting the eye-catching Mural. They also spoke about their magnificent vegetable garden from which they harvested onion and potatoes last year. Their beds are now prepped and fertilised for planting a variety of vegetables after their Easter break.

The committee spoke about their uniquely ‘upcycled’ picnic bench which is located next to the mural. They enthusiastically informed everyone that the sturdy bench is made entirely from recycled plastic.

Master McGee also expressed great appreciation for the hard work Mrs. Callis put into creating the school’s mural.

The school’s tin whistle group closed the mural opening with another vibrant tune.

The school community and guests then proceeded to the front of the school where the

Green Flag launch took place. The event was opened by the school’s lively choir, led by Mrs Brown and Anna-Marie Brennan.

Sixth Class Green School Committee members addressed the crowd and spoke about the tremendous work that had gone into educating the pupils about biodiversity and earning their much deserved Green Flag. They reported on the school’s vast wildlife garden which is home to many

insects and creatures.

The school’s Five Star Bug Hotel houses an array of insects and can be observed at the entrance to the Wildlife Garden.

Bird houses are dotted along the railing of the Garden. Many new trees were also planted as part of the school’s marvellous work on biodiversity. The school also collect their own rain water for watering plants, they have solar panels in place, and they are composting any food waste they produce.

Following the committee’s speech, Mrs Callis raised the school’s Biodiversity flag to joyous applause and cheers from onlookers. Master McGee presented her

with a gift as a symbol of the School’s sincere appreciation.

The Choir closed the magnificent ceremony with a final cheerful tune.

An uninsured driver who took his girlfriend’s car to go on an errand struck a cyclist causing him to suffer a fractured hip.

As a result, Gregory Quilton of 11 Crescent 2, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to a number of charges.

The court heard that on March 5 last year at Doolargy, Dundalk, the defendant was attempting to turn on to Hoey’s Lane and collided with a cyclist who suffered a fractured hip and was in hospital for nine days.

It was stated that the defendant had 17 previous convictions, including some for no insurance.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the 39-year-old father of two had taken his girlfriend’s car to go on an errand. He shouldn’t have done it and regrets his actions.

He pointed out that while he has many previous convictions, his last for road traffic was ten years ago.

“His life has changed since he was regularly coming to court and I ask you to look at alternatives to prison”, Mr MacGuill stated to Judge Flann Brennan.

The judge adjourned the case for Probation and Community Service reports but stated that he was not making any promises as he took a serious view of the incident.

From page 1 Local Gardaí Sergeant Pat Flynn and Garda Fiona Mackin came to Monastery NS this week to check out the rumours of heavy tractor traffic on the school’s infant yard.

The school recently received a donation of five beautiful mini case tractors from two parents and they have proven to be a bit hit with junior and senior infants.

They form part of a plan supported by the school’s Parents’ Association to provide extensive play facilities in the school’s beautiful and secure infant yard. At Easter they organised a monster raffle and fundraised over €4,000. They are also planning a fashion show in October.

Principal Jim McGee revealed that the tractors are an important part of the infants’ physical and social development.

The latest CSO data shows that the number of visitors coming to Ireland has increased by 10.3% compared to the same period last year, this includes a jump in the number of people travelling to the North-East”, says Peter Fitzpatrick, Fine Gael TD for Louth.

“The number of overseas visits to Ireland between December 2014 and February 2015 increased by 10.3% to almost 1.5 million tourists.

“During a recent visit to Carlingford, the Minister for Sport, Michael Ring highlighted to me

the importance of attractions like the Cooley Mountains, the festivities in Carlingford, the heritage of Drogheda and the amenities in nearby Dundalk to tourists in attracting visitors.

“The strength of the tourism offering in Louth continues to grow and we are in a very strong position to add to the current success. It is clear to those on the ground that more people are coming to visit, we see and deal with them every day, but now we have the details.

A man who, on three previous occasions had been given the benefit of the Probation Act, appealed for leniency ‘on one last occasion’ when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Pauric Brown of 97 Oakland Park, Dundalk, a former soldier who is in the process of setting up his own business, pleaded guilty to public order offences.

The court heard that Gardai on Park St came across a man who was intoxicated and aggressive outside a nightclub. They tried to calm him down but he told a

Garda to “go f*** yourself”. The court heard that on three occasions in the past three years he had been given the benefit of the Probation Act for a total of six public order offences.

Barrister, James Egan, stated that his 26-year-old client apologised for his actions, that he should have known better and has no excuse.

“He attended the Garda Station the next day to apologise and while he has had the benefit of the Probation Act before, he throws himself at the mercy of

the court..

His client is married with a four-month old child and a seven-year-old from a previous relationship. He left the Army in December of last year and is in the process of setting up a locksmith and shoe repair business.

Mr Egan stated that his client had €200 which he paid to the Court Poor Box. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €50 fine in respect of the charge of threatening and abusive behaviour, taking intoxication in a public place into

DMAS-F had seven representatives at the recent cadet/junior Kick Boxing Ireland Irish National Championships and achieved four podium places.

The team consisted of u9s Callum and Ryan, u12s Conor, Lee and Ethan, u15s Matthew and 16-18yrs Monique.

They competed as a multidisciplinary team entering weapons along with point and continuous fighting and achieving medals in all sections.

Last year’s Silver medalist, Conor, narrowly lost out on a split decision in the quarter finals, Callum and Matthew both met the winners of their divisions early on and exited just before medals.

Lee fighting in the point-fighting u12s had some electric fights and finished up with a Bronze medal in a close semi-final. Ethan fought with true determination and also finished his day in the semi-finals earning a bronze medal.

It’s Showtime for Dundalk Musical Society

Dundalk Musical Society are preparing to take to the stage yet again, this time with their annual fundraising cabaret “Showtime” taking place on Thursday April 16 at 8pm in The Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Proceeds from the concert will go towards the staging of this October’s much anticipated musical “Sister Act”.

The concert will bring the

audience on a musical journey and feature songs from the golden age to the modern day.

With excerpts from Showboat, South Pacific, Oklahoma, Top Hat as well as Mamma Mia, Chess, Chicago, Jersey Boys, Joseph and his amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Dreamboats and Petticoats.

Denis claims top prize at Dundalk Denis Cunningham returned to the winner’s enclosure at Dundalk Golf Club in some style on Sunday when, playing off 10, he shot an eight-under par 64 to take the Jubilee Cup by three strokes from nine-handicapper Maurice Soraghan.

Cunningham shot a gross 74 in a superb round that included one birdie, at the par-five sixth, 14 pars and just three bogeys.

That left him well clear of the field with only Maurice

Soraghan, coming anywhere close to challenging Cunningham with a five-under par 67 that included birdies at the parthree fifth and par-four 18th.

At one stage Maurice Soraghan actually had a two shot lead over Cunningham at the turn but he faltered on the back nine when he bogeyed four of the five holes from the 10th to the 14th.

Jim Dwyer, Barry Greenan and Paschal Keenan took the

category prizes with Ciaran Traynor winning the Gross Prize while David Brennan had a superb hole in one on the ninth.

There will be two semi-open competitions on Easter Bank Holiday Monday with an 18hole Ladies and Gents Semi Open Stableford Singles with the timesheet running from 07:30 to 12:10.

This will be followed from 12:30 to 15:00 by a Semi Open

mixed scotch foursomes. This is a stroke competition over fourteen holes. Booking is now available for both competitions.

Entries are now being sought for the Club Mixed Foursomes Matchplay and the Club Mens Foursomes Matchplay competitions.

Dundalk continue their march to rugby glory Dundalk continued their bid to clinch a place in senior rugby when they defeated Instonians on a scoreline of 15-11 in the All-Ireland League qualifiers on Saturday.

For the full 80 minutes there was never a score in the difference between the two sides and the much fancied Instonians who had had home advantage.

Although Dundalk had the wind in the first half, Instonians opened with a try but Jonathan Williams replied and soon afterwards Ultan Murphy kicked a penalty and Dundalk took a 8-5 lead.

The visitors went 15-5 in front thanks to Tu’ipulotu Nuku.

The Belfast side hit back with two penalties to reduce the gap but the Dundalk defence held out in the closing stages to claim the victory.

Next week Dundalk play Enniscorthy in the Towns Cup semi

final on Sunday in Naas while the All-Ireland playoffs resume the following Saturday when Clonmel visit the Mill Rd. Meanwhile, Dundalk 2nds face a replay with Enniscorthy in the Provincial Seconds Cup after recording a 19-all draw at home to the Wexford side in Sunday’s quarter-final.

Enniscorthy went ahead but a try from Derek Williams levelled the game at the break.

The visitors went 19-5 ahead in the second half but with the wind in their backs, Dundalk fought back with Enda Murphy Robert Shields scoring tries, their side fought back to level after James Shields landed the conversion.

Extra-time was played but neither side could add to their score.

The replay has been fixed for Enniscorthy this Good Friday with an 8pm kick off.

Students invited to apply for Naughton scholarships After eight years awarding second level student scholarships, the Naughton Foundation Scholarship scheme is once again reminding students from County Louth that the closing date is fast approaching and inviting all applicants

to submit their entries.

This year is the largest yet, with 29 Naughton Scholarships being awarded to Leaving Certificate students in 24 counties and the closing date for receipt of application forms for The Naughton Foundation

Scholarship is 5.30pm on Saturday, May 9.

There will be one guaranteed scholarship for each of the 24 participating counties and five additional scholarships allocated.

Students are invited to apply if they are currently

attending secondary schools in Louth, and if they are studying two or more of the following subjects- physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, mathematics and applied mathematics.

Each Naughton Scholarship is valued at €20,000 i.e.

€5,000 for each year of the student’s third-level course and the award can be used in any publicly funded university or third-level institution in Ireland, including Northern Ireland.

Applications must be submitted before, or on

this date to be considered eligible for the scholarship, this deadline will not be extended.

In 2008 the scheme started in three counties with Louth being one of the first, and has continued to expand annually.

David Keenan’s star continues to shine brightly with news that one of his songs will be used on the soundtrack of a major American film set to be released next year.

David came to the attention of the masses last month when singing his song ‘El Paso’ in the back of ‘Maxi’s Taxi’ resulting in hundreds of thousands of views and mainstream exposure for the 21 year old Ecco Road man.

Many doors have been opened for the talented singer songwriter including receiving a phonecall from film director Frank Powers who heard ‘El Paso’ and thought it would be perfect for his film ‘Brothers James: Retribution’, a film about Frank and Jesse James.

As well as this the song has become popular in the town of ‘El Paso’ in Texas leading to a petition to get David to play there in the near future.

ning to realise the enormity of what has happened.

“It’s been so surreal what has happened to me and it just shows me how powerful music can be.

This simple song that I wrote for me and my mates to sing at Dundalk games when I was 15 has travelled the world and reached places like Texas where I hope to play later on this year.

heard the song and introduced it to his audience and friends which has led to a bit of demand for me to play over there which I really would love to do”, explains David.

“And then I got a call from Frank Powers who is directing a film about Jesse and Frank James which will be released worldwide next year asking me could they use El Paso in their film.

The whole thing is just crazy but so exciting”, added David.

According to Frank Powers director of James Brothers: Retribution it was a no brainer to ask David to use the song once he had heard it.

“After hearing the song and knowing our main characters Frank and Jesse are the sons of an Irish immigrants in the late 1800s it was a no brainer to contact him to use it.

“Hopefully we can do a theatrical release in Ireland and have David Keenan perform the song live at the Red Carpet premiere”, he stated.

A brand new video for David’s song ‘The Friary’ shot in Dundalk was released last week and has already been receiving rave reviews which will put paid to any notions that Keenan is a one hit wonder.

David will be busy gigging around Dundalk and Dublin over the next month including a slot in Bellurgan Park as well as playing the Ruby Sessions in Dublin on April 21.

Importance of local tourism highlighted by Minister

(Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport) Michael Ring made a trip to Carlingford and Omeath were he met with delegates from The Carlingford Cooley Tourism Association, The Carlingford Tidy Towns Association, Louth Economic Forum and Omeath District Development.

On his visit Minister Ring officially opened the Outdoor Fitness Equipment which was kindly donated by Tom and Mary Mc Ardle on behalf of the Carlingford Adventure Centre. The Minister was accompanied by local TD Peter

Fitzpatrick. After leaving The Carlingford Adventure Centre, they made their way to the Carlingford Heritage Centre where they were greeted by local business representatives.

The local businesses kindly donated food and beverages for the occasion. Frank O’Brien, Vice Chair of CCTA (Carlingford Cooley Tourism Association) opened the proceedings with some kind, welcoming words and afterwards Minister Ring made an encouraging speech.
