PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Spring’s Arrival Welcome to our combined Spring/Summer Program Guide, just in time for the crocuses and tulips to start showing us their radiant colours! Not to mention how these lovely blooms of spring help our very own bees at the Centre. Look through this issue for active, educational, and fun programs and workshops for you and your loved ones. We also welcome your ideas on how we can better communicate with our community and offer programs that are unique to Dunbar needs. Stay tuned for news on a robust needs assessment to be conducted for the DCCA. We hope you will freely participate by phone and email if you are contacted for feedback. Your voices are necessary to enable quality programming that is diverse and inclusive for all ages, incomes and abilities. In the meantime, check out and register early for our upcoming events. Many of these fill up fast, including: • “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry…”, this year’s theme for our very popular Lecture Series hosted in partnership with Langara College on Thursday evenings, 7–8:30pm, until March 26. Please see our website for further details on topics that will be covered. • Spring Break Daycamps, March 16–27. All kids are too cool for school at this time, so how about field trips to fun places every day instead! • Patron Appreciation Event — New! Saturday, April 4, 11am-1pm. Please join us for light refreshments and snacks and chat with current Board members and DCC staff. Please bring your children to enjoy a craft activity. • Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22. Watch for a ‘green’ themed workshop to come in April. • Annual General Meeting, Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30pm. • Salmonberry Days Fair, Sunday, May 31. Always a fun-filled day with activities, exploring the natural world in our own neighborhood with entertainment for the young and young at heart. • Summer Daycamps — Check inside for details of our weekly themes and activities. These camps offer reasonable rates and diverse activities that appeal to all ages and interests with plenty of outdoor and indoor fun. Keep an eye on our website for upcoming events and program offerings at https://dunbarcentre.org/dunbar. If you have program suggestions, or if you are interested in volunteering at the centre, please email me at president@dunbarcentre.org. For any registration questions about existing programs, please contact centre staff at 604.222.6060. See you at the centre! Peggy Griesdale president, dunbar community centre association

What is the meaning behind your child's behaviour? When your child is stressed for longer periods of time, minor triggers can send him into fight, flight or freeze, creating an inaccurate stress-response pattern that can either over-mobilize or immobilize your child, impacting social engagement with others. Such heightened or withdrawn stress-behaviour can be inaccurately interpreted as mis-behaviour. Adults can react to mis-behaviour as a problem and seek out shortterm fixes or respond to stress-behaviour as communication and focus on long-term growth. For those with a passion for science fiction and fantasy weapons from across the universe, join us for a spectacular workshop on exploring the science of fantasy fencing through the structure of classical fencing. We will look at the weapon of choice from the likes of Aragorn son of Arathorn to Ser Jaime Lannister the "Kingslayer". Being both a ubiquitous symbol of fantasy fiction as well as a historical weapon used throughout medieval history, we will look at how one should wield the sword when the fate of the realm hangs in the balance. Previous experience is not required, all welcome! At the Our Lady of Perpetual Help School Gym at 2550 Camosun St. Please bring a pair of clean runners in addition to street shoes. Responsive Parenting

Adults can react to mis-behaviour as a problem and seek out short-term fixes or respond to stress-behaviour as communication and focus on long-term growth. More info:www.treerootscounselling.com. What’s the one thing that connects us all, when we get right down to it? The one and only thing that we can be absolutely guaranteed to have in common is our mortality: we were born, and one day, we will die. Our cultural and personal disconnection from this beautiful fact shapes how we move through our lives, and it definitely shapes how we will manage our own deaths, and the deaths of those we hold dear. Join us for one or all of these in-depth discussions exploring everything you need to “Know Before You Go”.
