MUSIC DIRECTOR BIO As a champion of orchestral music, Meyer creates concert experiences that bring classical music to new audiences. These endeavors range from conversational concerts to multimedia performances, and include collaborations of all kinds. One of the most adventurous collaborations he created was Runway Duluth, a fashion and music collaboration that received national recognition and redefined what the concert experience can be.

Having received much of his training in European opera houses, Meyer is passionate about opera and also holds the position of Music Director with the Lyric Opera of the North (LOON).

He has guest conducted many orchestras throughout the United States, including the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Symphoria in Syracuse, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra in Massachusetts, the Naples Philharmonic, and the Florida Orchestra. Other recent engagements have been with Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Canada, the New Bedford (MA) and East Texas Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Sarasota Orchestra in Florida. In 2012, Meyer was named the winner of The American Prize in orchestral conducting.

Over the course of his career Meyer has earned an outstanding reputation with musicians, audiences and critics alike. His performance has been described as “most intimate and emotional” , “mesmerizing” and “out of this world” and his personable and entertaining style has made him an audience favorite.

Most recently Meyer created The Beethoven Project, a collaboration between the DSSO and Minnesota Public Radio. During the five years of this project, the DSSO will perform and record all of Beethoven’s nine symphonies and, at the same time, create concerts and events that shed a light on the master’s works and bring his music to new audiences.

Maestro Meyer is the author of “Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Repertoire: A Catalog of Modern Music”.

Published by Scarecrow Press with a foreword by David Daniels, this book is a resource for conductors, librarians, and administrators, providing them with performance information for approximately 4000 compositions.

Meyer’s special interest in contemporary music had led to him featuring world premieres by composers such as Miguel del Aguila and Eve Baglarian, as well as the American or regional premieres of works by Arvo Pärt, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Joby Talbot, Elliot Sharp, Jonathan Leshnoff, and Hugo Alfven.

Outside of North America Meyer has conducted many orchestras in Europe and abroad, including appearances in South Africa, the Czech Republic, and Germany. In the operatic world he has led performances of Carmen and Don Giovanni with the Plovdiv Opera in Bulgaria and served as Assistant Conductor to the Michigan State University Opera Theatre, which he conducted in Puccini’s La Bohème and Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress.

From 2007 to 2011, Meyer served as Music Director to the Sarasota Youth orchestras, giving his Carnegie Hall debut in New York City with the Sarasota Youth Philharmonic in 2008.

Prior to his current appointments, Meyer served as Associate Conductor, and later Principal Guest Conductor of the Sarasota Orchestra in Florida. Further appointments have included Assistant positions with the Traverse Symphony (MI) and Missouri Symphony

Orchestras, as well as the Music Director positions with the Mason Symphony Orchestra in Michigan.

Meyer has studied with teachers like Neeme Järvi and Jorma Panula and, in addition, he assisted with numerous productions at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Germany),as well as at the Vienna State Opera (Austria) and the Teatro Real in Madrid (Spain).

He holds Doctor of Musical Arts and Master’s degrees in orchestral conducting from Michigan State University, where he worked with Leon Gregorian and Raphael Jimenez. Here he also worked as Graduate Teaching Assistant. His Bachelor’s Degrees are from the Folkwang Conservatory in Germany (music) as well as University Duisburg-Essen (philosophy).

The quote “Music is the space between the notes,” is sometimes attributed to either French composer Claude Debussy or jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. No matter who officially stated the phrase, the sentiment remains the same – that music needs space to resonate, reverberate and swell to reach its full potential.

However, now nearly a year into this global pandemic that has upended so many aspects of our lives, I have come to view this phrase as something more – that the music we make now is being supported by those who are unable to join us in person. This health crisis has robbed us of social gatherings, and with that, the sense of tradition surrounding the preparation and performance of orchestral music. Not only has our loyal audience been interacting with us in new and virtual spaces, but our musicians are making music in ways that are almost antithetical to the notion of an ensemble. Sitting six feet from your stand partner gives this immense amount of space that forces the musicians to work harder to hear the ensemble and ensure their sound blends as part of the whole. And while this notion of space and distance has spurred innovation and new ways of listening and making music, it has also reminded me of how much I miss seeing each and every musician on the stage and each and every one of you in Symphony Hall.

We continue to work hard, to embrace space, and to make music yet remain hopeful for a return to tradition in the coming year. Until then, know that we remember and hear you, and look forward to filling up those empty spaces soon.

Michael also formed the The Atomic Big Band, an 18-piece band that has performed in Hollywood for the premiere of the Warner Bros. movie, Poseidon, and his bands continue to play engagements from Presidential Inaugural Balls to high society fundraisers. Mr. Andrew leads these bands in performances at private events and alongside symphony orchestras, and at festivals and concerts coast to coast.

His self-written musical comedy, Mickey Swingerhead & the Earthgirls was a hit with audiences and the press. The hit show led to the formation of his band, Swinghead, which remains a favorite among audiences and has toured extensively throughout the country.

Michael performs in musicals and comedies in Regional Theatre from Shakespeare to Cole Porter. On the other side of the curtain, as a composer, lyricist and book writer, he's created shows paying tribute to the writers of the "American Songbook" including Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, and composed or performed his music for motion pictures including “Heart Breakers,” “Inglorious Bastards,” “Mad Hot Ballroom,” “Bobby Jones – Stroke of Genius,” and “The Five People You Meet in Heaven.” He’s orchestrated and produced music for several theatrical productions including Mitch Album’s new musical “Hockey” and the new children’s musical, “Interstellar Cinderella.”

Michael Andrew starred in the world premiere of the new musical, The Nutty Professor written by Marvin Hamlisch and Rupert Holmes, directed by Jerry Lewis.

DOMINIC CHELI DOMINIC CHELI IS A WINNER OF THE CONCERT ARTISTS GUILD INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AND IS REPRESENTED BY CONCERT ARTISTS GUILD Dominic Cheli’s playing has been described as “Spontaneous yet perfect, the best of how a young person can play.” (Symphony Magazine). His rapidly advancing career included his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut with legendary conductor Valery Gergiev where Dominic was described as “mesmerizing, (he) transfixed the audience… his fingers were one with each key.” (LA Times). He gave his Carnegie Hall Recital Debut this past season, and recently recorded his second CD on the Naxos label of the music of Liszt/Schubert. In July 2017, Cheli’s first CD, featuring the music of Muzio Clementi and released by Naxos, was hailed as “definitive performances, that match splendid playing with an appreciation of Clementi’s diverse, classically based style.” Also in 2017, Dominic was named 1st prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City.

Winner of the 2017 Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition, Dominic performed Prokofiev’s 2nd Piano Concerto with conductor, composer and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient, Matthew Aucoin.

Described as a “barnstorming Goliath” Mr. Cheli’s performance of Prokofiev’s 2nd Concerto “roared like a locomotive, shot firebrands of energy this way and that,

A native of St. Louis, Dominic has performed with the Metropolitan Orchestra of St. Louis, as well as orchestras all across the country and abroad including the San Diego Symphony, DuPage Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Princeton Symphony, Colburn Orchestra, Virginia Symphony, Adrian Symphony, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie (Germany), and the Great Falls Symphony.

He has worked with conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Yaniv Dinur, Markus Huber, Rossen Milanov, Arthur Fagen, Bruce Kiesling, Matthew Aucoin, and many others. Dominic recently debuted at several major festivals across the United States including the Ravinia Festival, Mostly Mozart Festival, and the Virginia Arts Festival. Recent engagements included appearances with the Seattle Symphony, a re-invitation to the Ravinia Festival, his debut at Alice Tully Hall, and recitals in Philadelphia, Washington D.C, and New York City.

Committed to engaging with his surrounding community, Dominic regularly performs at high schools, retirement homes, and gives both masterclasses and lectures for his younger audiences. Upon invitation, he has performed with Paul Coletti at ViolaFest in Los Angeles for younger students, and “Baby Got Bach” with pianist Orli Shaham at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC. Dominic has performed as an artist for Project: Music Heals Us,a non-profit organization that presents interactive classical music performances to diverse audiences in order to provide encouragement, education, and healing with a focus on elderly, disabled, rehabilitating, incarcerated, and homeless populations.

In 2018, Dominic was invited by his mentor, Andre-Michel Schub, to perform at the Virginia Arts Festival, both as a soloist and collaborator, in concerts centered around the music of Mozart. They collaborated in Mozart’s Double and Triple Piano Concertos with the Virginia Symphony, as well as in recital where “Cheli delivered one brilliant performance…it was a dazzling moment by a pianist whose name is destined for Schub-ian heights.” (Virginia Gazette). Mr. Cheli has studied at the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University and the Colburn School. Andre-Michel Schub, Peter Frankl, Fabio Bidini, Zena Ilyashov, and Sylvia Rosenberg are individuals who have been especially influential on his development as an artist.

Instrumentation: String orchestra In 1960 Shostakovich was in Dresden (then East Germany) to write the score for a new film by Lev Arnshtam, Five Days, Five Nights, which tells the story of eight Soviet soldiers charged with tracking down the priceless Dresden art treasures stolen by the Nazis. Prior to World War II Dresden was a major cultural center, especially for modern art in Europe. Towards the end of the war, on February 13-15, 1945, the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force dropped 1,182 tons of incendiary bombs and 1,478 tons of high explosive bombs on the city. The bombing remains controversial because it was argued that the attacks were disproportionate, completely destroying the city and resulting in casualties between 18,000 and 25,000, most of whom were women and children. The bombing allowed Hildebrand Gurlitt (a Nazi art historian, art dealer and war profiteer), to hide a large collection of artwork valued at over a billion dollars that had been stolen during the Nazi era, claiming that it had all been destroyed along with his house which was located in Dresden.

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH During his time in Dresden, Shostakovich also wrote his String Quartet No. 8, Op. 110. Publicly, Shostakovich said the quartet was inspired by the sight of Dresden, as he walked among the ruins and was shaken by the devastation. He chose to dedicate it to “the memory of the victims of fascism and war.” In a private letter to his lifelong friend and literary critic, Isaak Glikman (1911-2003), he wrote, “… try as a I might I was unable to compose the film music, even in rough. And instead I wrote a quartet that's of no use to anybody and full of ideological flaws. I have been considering that when I die, scarcely anyone will write a work in my memory.

Therefore I have decided to write one myself. Then on the cover they can print: Dedicated to the author of this Quartet.” Shostakovich composed the quartet in just three days and it is one of the most powerful and personal works of twentieth-century art.

The main theme of the quartet is boldly stated in the opening measures and finds its way throughout the entire score. It consists of the notes that correspond to his initials, DSCH (in Germany the spelling of his name is Schostakowitsch): “D” for Dmitri, “S” in German would be “Es” which is E-flat, and “H” is B-natural.

Shostakovich describes the themes he uses from his other works in the quartet along with a favorite of Lenin’s, the revolutionary song Tormented by Grievous Bondage:

My themes are the following: from the First Symphony, the Eighth Symphony, the [Second Piano] Trio, the [First] Cello Concerto and from Lady Macbeth. I have made allusions to Wagner (Funeral March from Götterdämmerung) and Tchaikovsky (second theme from the first movement of the Sixth Symphony). Oh yes, I forgot my Tenth Symphony. A nice mish-mash.

He continued in his letter to Glikman, “The pseudo-tragic side of this quartet is so powerful that when I was writing it, tears flowed as freely as water passed after a few beers.

Since coming home, I’ve tried to play it through twice, but again the tears started flowing.” According to another friend, Lebedinsky, on his return from Dresden he was so distraught that he bought a bottle of sleeping pills, talked of suicide and that this would be his last work. After a few days his spirit lifted and he resumed his normal routines of daily life, which also included writing the score for Five Days, Five Nights.

Shostakovich was a deeply complex individual who suffered much anguish during the 1950s. His first wife, Nina, died in 1954 and he quickly remarried, but that ended in a divorce in 1959. Under severe pressure he reluctantly joined the communist party, which he had previously sworn never to do, and for months he loathed himself as a coward and for caving to a chronic sense of fear. Finally he was having problems with his right hand, which spread in the coming years causing him mobility problems in all his limbs. He was diagnosed in 1969 as having a rare form of poliomyelitis.

Rudolf Barshai (1924-2010), with Shostakovich’s approval, arranged the String Quartet No. 8 for string orchestra and called it Chamber Symphony in C minor, Op. 110a. Although the addition of players takes away from the intimacy of the work, it does make for a powerful performance. It would be a mistake to think of the work as self-pitying. Shostakovich transcends individual pain to address all human despair, the torment of tragic, human agony known by all those who have experienced grievous loss whether due to war, personal bereavement or illness.

It is music written from the heart and it resonates with this heartbreaking universal experience; it is a masterpiece of the twentieth century.

PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 IN G MINOR, Op.25 FELIX MENDELSSOHN: Born: February 3, 1809, in Hamburg, Germany Died: November 4, 1847, in Leipzig Work Composed: 1830-31 World Premiere: October 17, 1831, in Munich, with the composer as soloist Performance History: There has only been one previous DSSO performance of this concerto. On November 2, 1984, Kristin Merscher was the soloist and Taavo Virkhaus conducted.

Instrumentation: Two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings If you watch the talent shows on television these days you will inevitably be witness to some very gifted young people singing or playing an instrument. Some are quite extraordinary and there are some who are not, yet the audience goes crazy about them. In their day, people went crazy over Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Clara Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn, along with his sister Fanny, studied counterpoint and composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832) who introduced his 12-year-old student to Goethe in 1821, which led to the following conversation: “Musical prodigies... are probably no longer so rare; but what this little man can do in extemporizing and playing at sight borders the miraculous, and I could not have believed it possible at so early an age.” “And yet you heard

Mozart in his seventh year at Frankfurt?” said Zelter.

“Yes”, answered Goethe, “... but what your pupil already accomplishes, bears the same relation to the Mozart of that time that the cultivated talk of a grown-up person bears to the prattle of a child.”

It comes as no surprise that Mendelssohn claimed he conceived of his G minor piano concerto while he was in Rome during his travels to Italy in 1830-31. Nothing yet was written down, but he had the entire concerto in his head and after returning to Munich it took him only three days to put it on paper. His gift for creating music out of thin air and the spontaneous sound of the concerto is proof of a prodigy at work - or play. Although he said, “I wrote it in but a few days and almost carelessly,”the concerto was extremely popular - helped along with the efforts of Clara Schumann and Franz Liszt.

The technical advances applied to the piano allowed for Mendelssohn to thoroughly explore an instrument capable of filling a concert hall with sound. The piano was now a bigger, heavier and louder instrument with a glittering new upper octave that begged the player to indulge in dazzling runs and arpeggios. Mendelssohn made full use of these advances in this concerto, almost to the point where it seems the piano is playing itself. Berlioz describes a piano competition in which all thirty-one candidates must play Mendelssohn’s G minor concerto: Cohen (no. 30) comes on, sits down at the piano without looking at the keyboard, and plays his concerto very well.

But after the final chord, just as he was leaving his seat, the piano without a word begins the concerto all over again by itself.

In desperation, the jurors call for Mr. Erard, who built the piano. M. Erard arrives; but try as he will, the piano, which is out of its mind, has no intention of minding him either.

He sends for holy water and sprinkles the keyboard with it—in vain: proof that it wasn’t witchcraft, but the natural result of thirty performances of one concerto. They take the instrument and remove the keyboard, still moving up and down, and throw it into the middle of the courtyard next to the warehouse. There M. Erard in a fury has it chopped up with an ax.

You think that did it? It made matters worse; each piece danced, jumped, frisked about separately on the paving stone, between our legs, against the wall, in all directions, until the locksmith of the warehouse picked up this bedeviled mechanism in one armful and flung it into the fire of his forge to put an end to it . . . Mr. Mendelssohn won’t be able to complain that his music isn’t being played.

But think of the damage! Such a fine instrument! We were heartbroken, but what could we do?

Similar to his Violin Concerto, the Piano Concerto in G minor is in three movements connected together without pause. The first movement begins with a tempestuous fury as piano and orchestra alternate in a series of increasingly heroic gestures. A second melody provides a lyrical response and the interplay of these two melodies gives a sense of wholeness to the movement. The second movement is introduced by heraldic fanfares. Mendelssohn’s ability to create beautiful melodies shines as he develops it into the finale. A brilliant Rondo displays the dashing virtuosity that brings the Concerto to its fiery conclusion.

SYMPHONY NO.40 IN G MINOR, K. 550 WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART: Born: January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria Died: December 5, 1791, in Vienna Work Composed: Completed July 25, 1788 World Premiere: April 17, 1791, in the Burgtheater, Vienna, Salieri conducting Performance History: This evening’s performance of this symphony is the DSSO’s seventh on the Masterworks Series. It was also played in 1936, 1944, January 27, 1956 ( the 200th date of Mozart’s birth), 1985, January 19, 1996, and on January 23, 2010 with Markand Thakar conducting.

Instrumentation: Flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns and strings In my previous notes for Mozart’s Symphonies No. 39 and No. 41 I wrote of the conjecture by Nikolaus Harnoncourt that Mozart’s last three symphonies should be considered a unified work. To briefly recap: No. 39 has a lengthy introduction, No. 40 has none and No. 41 has a grand finale. There was also a discussion of their respective keys and their characteristics: No. 39 is in E-flat major, the key of love and devotion; No. 40 is in G minor, representing discontent, uneasiness and resentment; and No. 41 is in C major, implying innocence, simplicity and purity.

Until recently the generally accepted idea was that Mozart never intended to have these three symphonies performed in his lifetime, but that they were for posterity.

In a recently discovered letter from July 10, 1802, by the musician Johann Wenzel (1762-1831) to the publisher Ambrosius Kühnel in Leipzig, Wenzel refers to a performance of the symphony at the home of Baron Gottfried van Swieten with Mozart present, but the execution was so poor that the composer had to leave the room. There were also several concerts given between the completion of the Symphony No. 40 and Mozart’s death for which copies of the program have survived, announcing a symphony, albeit unidentified by its date or key: Dresden, April 14, 1789; Leipzig, May 12, 1789; Frankfurt, October 15, 1790. Also, copies of a poster survive for a concert given by the Tonkünstler-Societät (Society of Musicians), conducted by Antonio Salieri, at the Burgtheater in Vienna on April 17, 1791. The first item on the program was announced as “A Grand Symphony composed by Herr Mozart.” Yet another fact is that Mozart revised this symphony, adding clarinets and rewriting the flute and oboes to accommodate them. It’s hard to believe that he would have gone to that trouble without a specific performance in mind. The orchestra for the 1791 concert in Vienna included Anton and Johann Nepomuk Stadler, brothers who both played clarinet. The idea of adding clarinets may have also come from Mozart hearing the version without them and feeling that it needed improving.

Mozart wrote only two of his symphonies in a minor key.

Coincidentally they are both in G minor: No. 25 The Little

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART G minor, K. 183, and No. 40 The Great, K. 550. The use of minor keys reflects his interest in the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) artistic movement that showcased darker and stronger emotions. Haydn and Johann Christian Bach, who strongly influenced the pre-teen Mozart, both produced works that expressed this angst.

For Mozart 1788 was a dark year; bills were piling up, Viennese audiences were becoming less eager to hear his concerts and recitals, and his infant daughter Theresa had just died. In letters to his friends he expressed the difficulty of looking beyond the shadows.

Symphony No. 40 begins with an immediate entrance to the main subject. This is where we get the first acknowledgment that this is not your run of the mill symphony. The standard practice would have been to offer the audience an introduction so they realize the music has started and it is time to stop their talking and start paying attention. If you are paying attention, Mozart grabs you from the very first measures and takes you on a tension-filled, breath-taking roller coaster ride. The second movement, in E-flat major, restores calm in its beautiful melody. The traditional Minuet is the third movement, but Mozart throws the rules away and creates a brutish monster of a Minuet. It seems as if multiple members of the orchestra are having an argument and the only voice of reason is the lone solo flute. The final movement is a musical depiction of manic depression. The brief moments of tranquility amidst the hysteria are filled with an incredible energy that will stay with you long after the final notes.
