Customer appreciation is hard to earn. It starts with abusiness making agreat productorperforming exceptional service. In today’s customer-service-oriented society, timely, friendly, proactive service is crucial. The next step is earning that businessand maintaining what you earned. Customer appreciation then follows. It’s so easy in our society today, with all the various outlets on social media, to vent about how negative an experience was. When a businesshas the opportunity to hear from acustomerwho took the time to express their appreciation and thanks for the product or service received, it is truly priceless. I’m sure many businessowners would agree that those moments don’t come around as often as they wish they
did, even if they provide true quality.
Here at the Duluth News Tribune, we wanted to take part in helping our businesses in the Twin Ports be recognized in an engaging way. The Best of the Best contest is not unique to the Twin Ports; many media outlets across the country host similar contests. What awonderful opportunity for our businesses to be honored by being nominated for Best of the Best. Regardless of what media outlet takes on the challenge of hosting this contest, guess who benefits? Our local community businesses.
This is our second year presenting Best of the Best, and we are ecstatic withthe results! Our contest really took off! During the nomination period of June 15 to July 6, we received 30,160 nominations, and 3,539 individuals participated. Our voting period then began July 13, and
we received 205,998 votes by 14,410 individuals through Aug. 5. Here at the DuluthNews Tribune, we take pride in the success of our contest. We promoted this contest through newspaper advertising, onlineadvertising, social media and emails. It was an effective marketing strategy —and this proved our readers have alot of appreciation and passion for their favorite businesses.
It was so exciting to see who the top businesses were going to be! The most competitive category was Best Photographer —our amazing photography businesses have many Northland fans. Our second most competitive category was Best Meat Market. Neither category should come as asurprise, consideringhow picturesque our landscape is and how suitable it is for photography. As for Best Meat Market, this is BBQ season —and how lucky are we to
have so many delicious choices? We truly have the best meat markets here in the Northland!
Iwanttosay THANK YOU for participating in the Duluth News Tribune Best of the Best contest. What an amazing honor to see all the winners and how incredibly supported they are by their loyal customers.
“We don’ttake stuff like this lightly,” said Jason Herter, Minnesota Duluth’sassistant coach. “Itisa greatfeeling, Ican tell youthat.”
Herterattributesthis achievement tothe players and their mature, respectfulbehavior.
“Ninety percent of them being successful has to do with what kind of kids theyare. They are good hockeyplayers, but they areunreal kids,” he said.
The assistant coach said another majorfactor is theentertainment value of Bulldogsgames.
“It’s atotal fan experience,”hesaid.“We have avariety of local kids, NorthernMinnesotaboys, on our hockey team, whichI think peopleenjoy. They areyoung and enthusiastic.”
Herteralso calledout theenergyatAMSOIL Arena, inadditiontothe sightlines for fans. Also, hesaidthe fans’ access to Lake Superior, Canal Park and downtownDuluth –all coming togetherfor an entire game-dayexperience–helps ensure theysee success.

is ahumbling experience, saidHanson.
“I still feel like we’re doing agreat job but there is always room to grow and improve… We’re only as good as our last brisket served.”
He said theirachievement is atestament to Duluth and the community’s desire to see success and improvement in Lincoln Park –inaddition to the hard work of the OMC staff.
“Restaurants are really about teams, and we have a really great team that has helped us succeed,” he said.
Give the “Best BBQ” in town atry by starting with theirmeats, smokedinlocal woods with oak and sugar maple. He recommends customers try the the sliced-to-order beef brisket, smoked for 12 hours to develop its distinctflavor.
He also said to give the “sweet heat” chipotle-cilantro barbecue sauce ago, with notes of rhubarb, cilantro, and adobe chilies. Then there’s one of his personal favorites, thecatfish tacos.
By:Kelsey RosethWhat’s the best place in Duluth to enjoy an authentic plate of lip-smacking, finger-licking, waist-expanding barbecue?
According to Duluth News Tribune readers, it’s OMC Smokehouse.
OMC is short for “Oink, Moo, Cluck” and it’s known for its freshly-smoked meats and authentic BBQ flavors.
“Our real mission for bringing barbecue to Minnesota is, ‘what is the culture of barbecue?’” said Louis Hanson, amanaging partner at OMC. “It’s about friendliness, openness, passion for serving quality meats and not beingafraid to challenge yourself every day.”
The barbecue joint opened in February 2017. It’s only been about one and ahalfyears, and the restaurant is already takingthis category by storm.
Back in 2014, owners bought abuilding at 1909 West Superior Street and began transforming it into arestaurant themselves. When not working
on renovations, the owners practiced preparing recipes and took multiple trips across the country, tasting food from famous barbecue joints and studying the techniques of prominent pitmasters.
ReceivingrecognitionasDuluth’s “Best BBQ”
“It’s an underappreciated item, Ithink,” said Hanson. “It’s something light, fresh, easytoeat, and we use alight cornmeal dredge on them, and fry them with our homemade malt vinegar aioli.”
This dish fills three flour tortillas with the fried Louisiana catfish alongside pickled bacon-corn relish, pickled jalapeños, brined red onions, pico de gallo, andcrunchycabbage.
Check out the rest of their menu at www.omcsmokehouse.com.
We are happytoget second and will work even harder to make 1st place next year. After all at NCCYou, it’s All About You!

When you hear the name “Mad Chicken Studio,” the image of asensual boudoir photoshoot probably isn’t the firstthing that comes to mind. But that’s exactly what this Duluth-based photography business specializes in.
Owner/photographer Jes Hayes shared the silly story behind the name of her business: “My husband and Iweredating at the time Istarted the business, and Ididn’twant to use my name, because Iknewitwould likely change one day. So, Mad Chicken Studio is named after my dog’s chicken toy. She’d pick it up, we’d say ‘Mad Chicken,’ and she’d go nuts. And the name just kind of stuck.”
Located at 231 E. 1st Street, Mad Chicken consists of Hayes, along with two other employees: Emily Comnick, ahair and makeup artist who also handles the ordering for the business, and Katie Lund, the social media guru and content creator. “I couldn’t do what Idowithout them,” Hayes said.
When Mad Chicken opened 10 years ago, they offered several different types of photography. But they now cater to aspecial niche: boudoir photos, along with shooting the very occasional wedding.
Perhaps you’re not familiar with boudoir photography, which is asensual, intimate style of portraiture photography. Atalented boudoir photographer uses gorgeous lighting, special poses, and specific angles to captureeachsubject at her most beautiful.
Some women choose to have the photostaken as agift for aspouse or partner. In many cases, however, the photo session is strictly for the lady herself.
“A lot of people generalize what aboudoir photo is and assume it’s agift for a spouse or significant other. But that’s not always thecase,”Hayes said.
“It’s more of aconfidence-boosting thing for women,” she added. “It makes them feel good about themselves, and even if the intentwas to be foragift for someone else, the women usually say it turned intoagift for themselves.”
Hayes shared that ladies are prepped for the experience well in advance, to help them feel comfortable and at ease. Once in the studio, they spend time trying on plenty of pretty little things, and have their hair styled and makeup professionally applied to help them feel their most beautiful.
Hayes was recentlynamed “Best Photographer” in the Duluth News Tribune’s Best of the Best contest and also received the most votes in the Local Businesses category. She was honored to receive the news.
“It’s pretty excitingtosee all the support we’ve gotten,” Hayes said. “I just want to say thank you to everyone who voted for us. I’m so grateful that we get to do this for women, and to have our love reciprocated back to us is so amazing.”

“Natural, butenhanced.”This is howDani Lindberg, ownerofDuluth’sDaniDoesBrows, summarizes the current regional trend for the care of eyelashes and eyebrows.
“Thetrend is moving awayfrom perfectly manicuredbrows andlashextensions, and becoming more natural,” she added
Lashes, brows and waxing
Lindberg, anestheticianbytrade, rents a space insideAvenue 45, asaloninDuluth’s Lakeside neighborhood. Here, she offers a special niche of services includingeyebrow/ eyelash tinting, browdesign, eyelash liftsand body waxing.
Lindbergisoriginally from theBrooklyn Center area, butnow considers Duluthher home. Sheattended Empire Beauty School at 22 after alifelong interest in makeup.
“I honestly figuredIwould finish school, do bridalmakeupand that would be that,” she said. “When Igot to school, Ifound Ireally loved cosmetic chemistry, skincare and waxing –the threethingsI thought Iwould struggle with and hate! Ialways did people’sbrows in school, and then the cosmetology side of school heard about my work and they started coming overtoget their brows done, too.
“When Ifinished school, Idecidedtomove to Duluth, even though the jobprospects seemed(and usuallyare)betterdownthere for estheticians,” shecontinued. “But, agood esthetician will builda following anywhere, becauseit’sa job that entirely relies on your ability to develop relationships with your clientele.Istartedata franchise in Duluth andbuilt anamefor myself within that space. WhenI decided to go into businessfor myself, Ihoped for clientstofollow, butInever

expected formyclientbase to quadruple. I thinkDuluthand the surroundingareaslove agood, honestsmall business andIhope to continue being that within the beauty industry in this community.”
With acurrentwaittimestretching 12 weeks into the future, Lindberg is in highdemand. Whileher eyebrowand eyelashservicesare incrediblypopular, so isher body waxing. She estimates she has 100 “regulars” who return each month for thepopular Brazilian wax.
Beyondher full-time schedule, Lindberg also offers what she calls “overtime services,” where she willwork beyond her regular hours for a50percent markupinher fees.Plenty of clients are happy to paythatprice to the talented Lindberg, who is affectionately known as Duluth’s “browwhisperer,” to avoid the threemonth wait time.
Success hasbeen hard-won for Lindberg,
now 29, who experiencedhomelessnessasa teenager. She livedfor atimeatDuluth’sLife House, asafealternativetothe streets.
“Ifitweren’tfor LifeHouse, Iwouldn’t be where Iamtoday,” she said. “Life House helpedmedevelopinto aconfident, goaloriented youngwoman. Theyare the real superstarhere, honestly. When you areasad, broken and exceptionally angry teenager, you aren’t receivedwithalot of patience. Life House waspatient, kindand giving. Nomatter what Iamabletodonateand give them, Ican never repaywhat theydid for me.
Lindberg is humbled andgratefultobe named the winner of the Duluth News Tribune’s “Best of the Best” award, in the category of best cosmetic/esthetic clinic. She also earnedthe mostvotes in the services category.
“I wasreally excited when Igot the call, especiallysince I’veonlybeenopensince November2017,” she said. “When Iwentinto businessfor myself,I wasalittlenervous becauseitwas ‘make it or break it’for me. So, this award is arealconfidence-booster.I
wouldlike to thank the clients who votedfor me from thebottom of my heart. This was such anice boostofpositivity, andI appreciate themsomuch.”
WhileLindbergplans to eventuallyhirean apprenticeand open her own standaloneshop, she doesn’t expect her serviceswillchange toomuch fromher currentofferings. “I’m in averyniche market, and whenyou offertoo much, you specializeinnothing,” shesaid
