What is a Berry?

Hey, ¿Can I tell you something about Blackberries?

They are also call just “berries”, they are kind of a mystery among the fruits, ¿don’t you think? They are called blackberries, but in reality, they’re a mix of a lot of different berries, like, of different species of berries.

They aren’t your typical berries, no, they are formed by a lot of mini fruits called “drupes”, they sort of “stick” to each other and that’s the reason of why the berries are shaped in that unique way. It’s like each berry had like a small party of fruits, and that’s very fun to think about.

The curious thing is that even though berries come from trees or plants completely different, all of them have like the same shape and form, even almost the same taste, that’s why it’s very easy to mistake them.

When we say “berries”, usually we meant two different kinds of fruits, although they have their differences, they share the same name, funny, right?

Some of them come from trees called “mulberry trees”, do you know them? These trees make those blackberries and even sometimes they can even

stain the soul if you aren’t careful enough.

The other kind of barriers come from shooty and plants with spines, those are the “brambles”, there are kind of wild berries, but they are similar in taste, they are delicious.

But, we don’t finish there, among these groups there’s an impressive variety of different species, there are more than three hundred species of berries to be exact! To make it more interesting, the commercialization of berries generate al kinds of new hybrids of berries that don’t even exist in nature!

They’re like those friends that are always around to give you an energy boost when you need it the most, they are low in calories because they don’t add any carbs, which makes them perfect to keep your metabolism in a good way. Also, they are charged with vitamins and minerals that make you feel like a new person.

For example, vitamin C es the queen of the berries. They have more vitamin C than some citric fruits, imagine that! That’s why, in the past, the Nordics and the American Inuits used them to avoid the feared scurvy (an illness that happens when you don get enough vitamin C) berries are also full of vitamin A and potassium and fiber.

But things get way more interesting, because berries are also rich in anthocyanins and carotenoids. What does it mean? They have a lot of proprieties that are good for the body, according scientific studies.

The Berries

Did you know that every kind of berry has its own flavor and personality? It’s like every single one had its own party in our mouth. Some of them are super fresh and sour, like the “Morus Nigra” berry and the “Morus Rubra”, they give a punch of bittersweet flavor that wakes your taste buds right away.

Berries are like a nutritive combo that you can’t miss in your diet!

Bread with berries and chocolate

Ingredients:

- 1 slice of whole wheat bread

- 1 tablespoon of cream cheese

- 4 or 5 blackberries

- 1 tablespoon of liquid chocolate

- 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar

Utensils:

- 1 plate

- 1 spoon

- 1 sieve or strainer

How do you make them?

- Tostar la rodaja de pan integral

- Make a toast with a slice of integral bread in toaster or a pan.

- Spread the cream cheese in the already toasted slice of bread.

- Wash and dry well the chosen berries.

- Cut carefully in half each one of the chosen berries.

- Put all the berries on top of the slice of bread.

- Powder some sugar on the bread, to make it sweet.

- With the help of a spoon, you spread some chocolate on the brad.

- And there you go! A recipe super easy, quick, economic and delicious for when you need a snack.
