What is the Little Dukes Training Academy? Little Dukes Training Academy is a new initiative from Dukes Education. As a family of nurseries, schools and colleges, we want to provide an extraordinary education for every child in our care. This starts with the Early Years. A child’s first years are absolutely critical; this precious period of time will have an extraordinary impact on the rest of their life. The foundations of a healthy, happy adult are laid in our nursery classrooms; their future - and our future - will be shaped by what we do today. We want to attract and train the very best people at the Little Dukes Training Academy (LDTA), based at our premises in south-west London. We want to foster and encourage educators who will establish a golden standard of Early Years education, not just within the Dukes family but across the whole sector. Welcome from our Principal I know how important an Early Years education is. I have seen first-hand how children flourish and grow in the right surroundings, and with the right support. I have been the successful Headteacher of two well-known Montessori nurseries and I believe a Montessori education is an unparalleled education for children. That is why I am proud to lead Little Dukes Training Academy. And proud to be working with Montessori Centre International and Reach4Skills to provide training for the next generation of Early Years educators. So whether you want to learn more within Montessori practice or develop as an Early Years educator, the LDTA will have the right opportunities for you. For tomorrow’s Montessori. Montessori has never been more relevant than today. In a rapidly changing world, it is apparent that education needs to change, too. We must re-evaluate its curriculums and methods, how we train teachers and the emphasis we place on teaching for a specific outcome. We must rethink the very essence of education itself. Even though Montessori has existed for more than 150 years, its approach is modern. Its core belief – that education is not taught but is inherent in every child – is in step with current thinking. Its methods are forward thinking, too. In Montessori, the ‘teachers’ are called directresses or guides. Students are introduced to child development and how to help the child to grow to their full potential. The directress uses skills of observation like a scientist might and pinpoints what each child needs to flourish. They will then use this knowledge to create a learning environment that will enable every child to thrive. Every child is an individual so the approach to their learning must be individual, too. We will be offering three options to enhance your career as an educator.

MCI Certificate in Integrating Montessori Practice (Infant Specialism) Course

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

HOW WILL I LEARN?

The Infant Specialism course has been developed specifically for practitioners who have gained qualifications (Level 3 and above/licence to practise) and have experience working with children, preferably with infants.

Study at your own pace with support from a dedicated tutor and choose a workshop that is convenient to you. The course combines face-to-face and online learning, using an innovative Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which enables learners to communicate and collaborate.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? We will be the first training centre in the UK to offer this Infant Specialism course, a blended-learning course for professionals to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the development and caring of infants, supporting you to focus your study on this highly important period of a child’s life.

All students will access course materials online through the VLE and will be supported by a mentor, to receive feedback on their work and participation in the forums. At the face-to-face workshop, you will be guided by Montessori specialist trainers.

Skills and experiences gained The course places great emphasis on the role of the adult and the role of the prepared environment from birth to three years, linking the Montessori pedagogy to regulatory and statutory frameworks. This is achieved through the interactive activities, observations and reflections on practice in the assessments and through forum posts.

HOW TO APPLY

There are six assessed assignments to complete across the course for the students to evidence understanding and critical reflection on practice. The first five assignments are to convey your understanding of the course’s content and its application; these can be assessed flexibly via written responses or professional discussions. The final assignment is to be prepared as a reflective filmed/recorded presentation or podcast.

If you are an early years educator, or qualified teacher wishing to add Montessori to your practice, this could be the right course for you.

Skills and experiences gained Your online study will guide you through the Montessori philosophy and Montessori areas of learning. You’ll also complete an 88-hour apparatus workshop where you gain hands-on experience with the Montessori materials. These workshops will be held at LDTA in south-west London.

This Diploma in Montessori pedagogy (birth to seven years) is for anyone aged 18+ interested in working alongside children in a Montessori early years learning environment. The course provides students with the expertise, skills and professional approach needed to become a facilitator of Montessori education, acting as a key person in a Montessori classroom.

Learning will be through face-toface and online learning, using an innovative Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which enables learners to communicate and collaborate.

• Complete within two years. • Study at NCFE CACHE Level 3 or 4. • Certificate awarded by Montessori Centre International. Course start dates: January 2022 Application deadline: 26th November 2021 Cost: Covered by Dukes Education (T&Cs apply)

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? This qualification has been built to meet the criteria for Early Years Educators required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). Training in Montessori pedagogy requires a breadth of understanding and varied set of skills as well as specific attitudes to children and to on-going development.

Study flexibly at your own pace and with your dedicated mentor who will support you through the Montessori philosophy and Montessori areas of learning. You’ll also complete a minimum 400 hours professional placement in a Montessori early years setting, where you’ll gain hands-on experience with the Montessori approach. In addition to guided learning hours, students will be expected to engage in self-directed study of approximately 275 hours.

Skills and experiences gained As well as practical skills and professional placement experience, students will learn about the historical context, philosophical approach and developmental understanding of the Montessori pedagogy, creating a firm foundation from which educators can practise.

There are various assignments for each module and throughout the professional placement aspect of the course. • If English is not your first language you must have IELTS (academic) at level 6.5 or above across all four areas. • For students carrying out their professional placement in England or Wales, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required, as it is for anyone working with children. Early Years Training At Dukes Education we are committed to providing the very best training and development opportunities for our staff and new recruits in the Early Years sector. This is why we have partnered with Reach4Skills, an innovative training provider that delivers fully funded apprenticeship qualifications in Early Years. Together, we will be offering these five different apprenticeship courses to enhance your career as an Early Years educator:

Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Level 3 Early Years Educator Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor Level 3 Teaching Assistant Level 5 Children, Young People and Families Manager These courses are exclusively available to staff from within the Dukes family.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Reach4Skills offer a work-based apprenticeship programme, meaning the majority of the learning for these courses takes place in the apprentice’s work environment. The courses use a blended learning approach, however, to suit each individual, so some of your time, such as meeting with your tutor, might happen online via Microsoft Teams.

18 LDTA - APPRENTICESHIP

What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying assessment and skills development programme. It is a way for individuals to earn while they learn, gaining valuable skills and knowledge in a specific job role. Anyone over the age of 16, spending at least 50% of their working hours in England over the duration of their apprenticeship and not in full-time education, can apply for an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships can be offered to new entrants or they can be used to grow existing talent among current employees. In the UK an apprentice is required to spend 20% of their time on off-the-job training. (You may need more than this if, for example, you need training in English and Maths.) This would typically include time spent with a tutor, special training days or workshops. There is, however, no set pathway. Reach4Skills delivers a training experience that is tailored to individuals learning styles and needs.

Training and Assessment You will be signed up with a tutor who will meet with you every four to six weeks, either in the workplace or online via Microsoft teams. Your tutor will ensure a visit onsite takes place at least every 12 weeks to conduct a progress review. The tutor will train, assess and support you throughout your qualification. You will also be given a range of learning resources to work on independently in between the sessions with your assessor such as: • Paper-based or electronic workbooks • Hand-outs and activities • Electronic-learning through Laser Learning.

The Early Years Educator qualification is suitable for those over the age of 18 currently working in or wishing to work in Early Years Education and Care. It is appropriate for Early Years Practitioners who are looking to gain a more in-depth understanding of child development, the EYFS, and wish to improve their practice.

Knowledge

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? The Level 3 Diploma prepares learners to become Early Years Educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. Early Years Educators are highly trained professionals who play a key role in ensuring that young children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. They work in a range of settings including full day care, children’s centres, preschools, reception classes and as childminders. This qualification will enable a Practitioner to be counted in ratios as a qualified member of staff, and will allow progression to become a Room Leader or begin their journey to Senior Management. It can also lead to the Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor or Level 5 Children, Young People and Families Manager qualifications.

• The expected patterns of children’s development from birth to 5 years, and have an understanding of further development from age 5 to 7. • How children’s learning and development can be affected by their stage of development and individual circumstances such as moving school, birth of a sibling, family breakdown and adoption and care • The legal requirements and guidance on health and safety, security, confidentiality of information, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Skills • Plan and lead activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes which include the learning and development areas of current early education curriculum requirements • Support and promote children’s speech, language and communication development • Identify the needs, interests and stages of development of individual children

HOW WILL I LEARN?

GATEWAY REQUIREMENTS

The Reach4Skills offer a blended programme, tailored to each individual. The majority of your time will be spent in the workplace and the rest will be spent with your tutor, face-to-face or online.

The decision to take an apprentice through Gateway is made between the employer, Independent Training Provider, and apprentice. The apprentice must have achieved all the required on-programme elements before they enter Gateway and completed a minimum of 372 days on programme.

ASSESSMENT

The apprentice must achieve the following on-programme assessment requirements prior to qualifying: • Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification • Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) or Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) • Level 2 English and Maths

The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress. Promoting self-belief, social inclusion and high self-esteem play an integral part to pupils’ well-being; ensuring pupils thrive in a positive, nurturing, safe environment.

A Team Leader/Supervisor is a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility of managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions, and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

HOW WILL I LEARN?

This qualification is suitable for qualified Early Year Educators who are currently holding a position as a Deputy Manager/Nursery Manager or wish to take on a management position in the future.

The Reach4Skills offer a blended programme, tailored to each individual. The majority of your time will be spent in the workplace and the rest will be spent with your tutor, face-to-face or online.

As a Children, Young People and Families Manager, you will ensure direction, alignment and commitment within your practice, team(s) and organisation and across partnerships to help children, young people and families aspire to do their best and achieve sustainable change. They will build teams, manage resources, and lead new approaches to working practices that deliver improved outcomes and put the child, young person, or family at the centre of practice.

Course duration: 24-30 months or 12-18 months if mandatory qualification has already been gained. Start date: Flexible

Skills and experiences gained Apprentices will learn how to build a successful team, manage resources and lead on approaches to working practices, all with the goal of delivering improved outcomes for the child, young person and their families.

END-POINT ASSESSMENT (EPA) REQUIREMENTS The EPA for Children, Young People and Families Manager contains two methods of assessment: • Situational Judgement Test (50%) – paper-based written test sat under controlled conditions and will last for 45 mins • Competence Interview by Portfolio (50%) – Structured discussion approx. 55-65 mins between apprentice and Independent End-Point Assessor (IEPA)

ASSESSMENT

The learner must achieve the following on-programme assessment requirements prior to Gateway: • Completion of the mandatory qualification specified in the option chosen • Level 2 English and Maths • Completion of a portfolio to support the competence interview

Maths and English GCSE Grade C/4 and above required (or willing to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills)

Learners can also progress to studying Degrees in Children and Young People, Community Studies, Social Work or Youth Work.

How to apply LDTA courses are currently only available for those working in a Dukes Education nursery or school. All our courses are listed on the Dukes Hub. To apply, please visit learning.dukeshub.com and select the Teaching & Learning section to find the right course for you, simply click ‘Attend’ and fill out the form. MONTESSORI COURSES Once you have applied online, we will be in touch via email with an application form and an invitation to interview with Aimee Kimbell and Claudia Neves. Offers will be made to successful applicants shortly after interview, a few weeks ahead of the start of the course. Start dates for our courses vary but interviews typically take place in August and December. EARLY YEARS QUALIFICATIONS Once you have applied online, we will connect you and your line manager with our account manager at Reach4Skills, who will guide you through their application process.

FAQs Who are LDTA training courses available to? Currently, all our courses are exclusively available to Dukes Education staff. From September 2022, our Montessori training will be available to external applicants, too. How much do the training courses cost? Reach4Skills Early Years training courses are fully funded by Dukes Education. Our Montessori training courses are also fully funded by Dukes, providing you stay with us for a period after you have completed the training course. If you choose to leave us, you will be required to pay back a percentage of the cost. Details can be found in the Learner Contract, which is signed by all trainees before starting their course and available to read via the Policies section of our website.
