WELCOME TO DUKE DUKE UNIVERSITY is more than a prestigious college institution—it’s a place to grow, to explore and to experience. The University we know today was once a one-room log schoolhouse in nearby Randolph County, before becoming a permanent academy for Methodist and Quaker children, and then Trinity College in 1859. Despite surviving the Civil War, the school struggled during the Reconstruction Era before adhering to the “New South” image of urbanization and manufacturing with a move to booming Durham in 1892. Entrepreneur Washington Duke’s $85,000 church and civic minded contribution to enhancing the school was followed by support from his eldest son, Benjamin N. Duke, and Ben’s younger brother, James B. Duke, who created the family philanthropic organization, The Duke Endowment, in 1924 and enabled the school’s transition to a university. James B. Duke’s vision was to transform a regional liberal arts college into one of the world’s top institutions of higher education. And here we are. FUN FACTS Duke student basketball fans are known as the Cameron Crazies, and for good reason. In order to attend the home game against University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some Duke students brace the cold and camp out in K-ville for almost 2 months. Mike Krzyzewski, otherwise known as Coach K, has the most NCAA Division I wins in men’s basketball history.
The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Jovian, the celebrity lemur for the hit children’s show Zoboomafoo lived at the Lemur Center before passing away in 2014.

The Duke Chapel is 210 feet tall. Weddings at the Chapel can be booked only one year in advance of the wedding month. Some couples seeking a specific date have recreated Duke’s tenting tradition by camping outside the Chapel the night before sign-ups begin in order to be the first to book.
A Closer Look at Tenting TENTING IN K-VILLE for the UNC game is not taken lightly. The process includes line monitors and tent checks with strict rules and regulations. Only the most committed fans survive. Black tenting Students stake their campout spot and begin tenting approximately six weeks before the big game. Blue tenting Students start their tenting experience about four weeks before the game. White tenting The least intimidating kind of tenting, white tenting allows students to begin sleeping out about two weeks before the game. Students who choose not to tent or find themselves on the tenting wait list may participate in a walk-up line—but admission is not guaranteed. Most walk-up liners spend the night before the big game attempting to bear the cold in K-ville— and they’re not even allowed a tent. The Duke Forest is comprised of a variety of ecosystems and over 7,000 acres of land, much of which was purchased by the university in the 1920’s in order to help transform Trinity College into Duke University. The forest helps foster learning, community outreach activities, and most prominently research, as the forest is home to over 60 research projects per year. The forest’s diverse wildlife also creates the perfect environment for recreational activities such as hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Named one of the top 10 public gardens in the United States and winner of the 2013 Horticulture Magazine Award for Garden Excellence, Duke Gardens features five miles of scenic pathways, and 55 acres of beautiful plants, flowers and ponds. Duke Gardens offers tours, classes, volunteer opportunities and an elegant rental hall for special events. It is also home to Duke Performances’ Music in the Gardens, a summer outdoor concert series. It’s the perfect place to read a book, have a picnic and spend a leisurely afternoon.

For over seven decades, Cameron Indoor Stadium has served as the home of the Cameron Crazies and the site of over 1,000 men’s and women’s Blue Devil victories. Dedicated to longtime Duke Athletic Director and basketball coach Eddie Cameron, the 9,314-seat facility provides an undeniable sense of spirit, electricity and magic. It is no surprise that some crazies tent out in K-Ville for up to eight weeks just to watch a game inside Cameron.

NPHC—composed of eight historically Black Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities. NPHC is known for its annual Homecoming Step Show and NPHC Week.

Of the Duke undergraduate student population, 34% belong to a Greek-lettered organization. Fraternity and Sorority Life consists of four governing councils, the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), the Panhellenic Association (Panhel), and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC).
Panhel—made up of 10 National Panhellenic Conference organizations. MGC—houses Duke’s multicultural/cultural Greek-lettered organizations, including three Asian-interest chapters, two Latino/a based organizations, one South Asian-interest fraternity and one multicultural sorority. Selective Living Groups (SLGs) These student-initiated communities can be purely social in nature or based upon a fundamental intellectual or cultural theme. Current members of an SLG select new members through a recruitment program.

dining All freshmen, sophomores and juniors living on campus are required to have some kind of dining plan. All freshmen meal plans consist primarily of swipes at Marketplace, with a limited amount of extra food points. Most upperclassmen meal plans consist solely of food points, which vary in amount among the different plans. Food points can also be added to a student’s Duke card throughout the academic year.

Graduate Students Play Hard Too Campout, the annual event sponsored and run by the Duke University Basketball Committee, produces the largest yearly gathering of Duke graduate and professional students. Students camp out in designated areas of the Blue Zone parking lot in order to earn the ability to purchase season basketball tickets. And they get to eat food from local food trucks, meet new people and engage in activities such as trivia games and a scavenger hunt.

CAMPUS BREAKDOWN Duke consists of three separate campuses, all connected across 1.8 miles via Duke University Road. Each campus offers a different social experience and some Duke students may live on all three throughout their academic career. East Campus All first-year students are required to live in one of East Campus’s 14 residence halls, which are distributed across four “neighborhoods”. East Campus was originally the site of Trinity College and the Woman’s College from 1930-1972, and it became freshmen exclusive in 1995. The main features on East Campus include Lilly Library, The Ark dance studio and Marketplace—the freshmen dining hall. West Campus is the home of the famous Chapel.

West Campus West Campus, home of the famous Chapel, features many other Duke favorites including Cameron Indoor and Wallace Wade Stadium. The campus was created in 1924 when Trinity College underwent an expansion as a result of the Duke Endowment. Sophomores, juniors and seniors live on West Campus in one of its seven quadrangles, which also host 10 Interfraternity Council fraternities and 13 Selective Living Groups. West Union offers an array of social dining venues and study rooms.
Central Campus Central campus houses over 1,000 students within a multitude of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and threebedroom apartments. Nine Panhellenic Association sororities, six fraternities and seven non-greek selective living groups currently reside on Central Campus. Central features amenities such as a swimming pool, basketball courts, and a small gym. Students can also purchase groceries, cooking supplies and other living necessities at Uncle Harry’s General Store, conveniently located at Mill Village.

Perform—The Department of Theater Studies offers students multiple opportunities to both study and practice theater, with courses in dramatic literature and theater arts. The department faculty includes theater professionals in acting, administration, design, directing and playwriting. PARKING + TRANSPORTATION Visitors, students, staff and faculty members can find parking on campus in parking garages, pay-lots and at parking meters located around campus. A map of all campus parking lots, including visitor areas, is available online at maps.duke.edu. All motor vehicles & motorcycles must be registered and display a valid parking permit, which can be purchased online at parking.duke.edu. Campus & Regional Bus Routes – Free and accessible transit services run throughout the campuses and Medical Center, with a parking shuttle service operating from periphery parking lots to the core of campus.

Bryan Center Counter (down the hall from McDonalds)—student mailboxes & package pickup
The Bryan Center Post Office (basement level of the Bryan Center) & East Campus Post Office (basement level of East Union) —buying postage and shipping packages.
Computer & Technology Support
Duke Postal Operations processes all mail for students, faculty and staff.
Duke Office of Information Technology (OIT) manages and supports over 20 computer labs across campus—most are open
24 hours, seven days a week. Students, faculty and staff can also bring their computers to the OIT service desk, located at The Link in Perkins Library— which offers a wide range of free technical support including help with hardware and software issues. OIT also provides in person and online technology training, free of charge. For more information, visit oit.duke.edu.
E-print / Copying & Digital Services
The campus-wide printing system is available for students to print whenever and wherever it’s convenient. For more information, visit oit.duke.edu/comp-print/ printing. Color printers, scanners and copy machines are also available for use across Duke’s campus.
Police
The Duke University Police Department operates 24 hours a day. Uniformed police and security officers patrol the campus and medical center complexes in cars, on bikes and on foot. Emergency phones are also located throughout campus, offering a direct link to the Duke Police. Visit duke. edu/web/police for more information. Duke Card Office - The DukeCard is the official identification card for Duke University, providing access to a wide range of campus services and activities. The DukeCard office is located in the Telcom Building (rear entrance) on Science Drive. Visit dukecard.duke.edu for more information. Information Desk– The Bryan Center Information Desk provides campus information and serves as a distribution point for a variety of publications, including free campus maps, Duke and Durham bus schedules, athletic schedules and programming information. The University Box Office (also located in the Bryan Center) is the central outlet for information and tickets for on-campus performing arts and cultural events. Employment – There are a wide range of campus employment opportunities available at Duke, many subsidized through the Federal Work-Study or Duke Work-Study programs.
