WELCOME TO DUKE DUKE UNIVERSITY is more than a prestigious college institution—it’s a place to grow, to explore and to experience. Blue Devils work hard and play hard, and they’re all the better for it. The University we know today was once a one-room log schoolhouse in nearby Randolph County. Eventually it became a permanent academy for Methodist and Quaker children and in 1859 it turned into Trinity College. Despite surviving the Civil War, the school struggled during the Reconstruction Era before adhering to the “New South” image of urbanization and manufacturing. It was then that Trinity College moved to the booming city of Durham in 1892. Its new campus at the time is Duke’s n fi d n n n Washington Duke’s $85,000 church and civic-minded contribution to enhancing the school was followed by support from his eldest son, Benjamin N. Duke, and Ben’s younger brother, James B. Duke, who created the family philanthropic organization, The Duke Endowment, in 1924 and enabled the school’s transition to a university. These contributions also gave Trinity College its new name—Duke University.

FUN FACTS Duke student basketball fans are known as the Cameron Crazies, and for good reason. In order to attend the home game against University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some Duke students brace the cold and camp out in K-ville for almost 2 months. Mike Krzyzewski, otherwise known as Coach K, has the most NCAA Division I wins in men’s basketball history.

The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Jovian, the celebrity lemur for the hit children’s show Zoboomafoo lived at the Lemur Center before passing away in 2014.

A Closer Look at Tenting TENTING IN K-VILLE for the UNC game is not taken lightly. The process includes line monitors and tent checks with strict rules and regulations. Only the most committed fans survive. Black tenting Students stake their campout spot and begin tenting approximately six weeks before the big game. Blue tenting Students start their tenting experience about four weeks before the game. White tenting The least intimidating kind of tenting, white tenting allows students to begin sleeping out about two weeks before the game. d n n n find n tenting wait list may participate in a walk-up line—but admission is not guaranteed. Most walk-up liners spend the night before the big game attempting to bear the cold in K-ville— and they’re not even allowed a tent. n d n find n n n n part of their Duke experience. The Duke Forest is comprised of a variety of ecosystems and over 7,000 acres of land, much of which was purchased by the university in the 1920’s in order to help transform Trinity College into Duke University. The forest helps foster learning, community outreach activities, and most prominently research, as the forest is home to over 60 research projects per year. The forest’s diverse wildlife also creates the perfect environment for recreational activities such as hiking, biking and horseback riding.

CAMPUS BREAKDOWN Duke consists of three separate campuses, all connected across 1.8 miles via Campus Drive. Each campus offers a different social experience and some Duke students may live on all three throughout their academic career. East Campus fi d n required to live in one of 15 residence halls on East Campus, which are distributed across four “neighborhoods.” East Campus was originally the site of Trinity College and the Women’s College from 1930-1972, nd fi sive in 1995. The main features on East Campus include Lilly Library, The Ark dance studio, nd fi year dining hall. West Campus West Campus, home of the famous Chapel, features many other Duke favorites including Cameron Indoor and Wallace Wade Stadium. The campus

was created in 1924 when Trinity College underwent an expansion as a result of the Duke Endowment. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors live on West Campus in one of its seven quadrangles, which also host 29 independent houses, 11 Selective Living Groups, six fraternities, four living-learning communities, and one sorority. Additionally, the new Duke Student Wellness Center is the home of Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Health, a tranquil garden, the “Oasis” which has a massage chair, meditation pillows and more.

Central Campus Central Campus houses over 1,000 students within a multitude of one-bedroom, twobedroom and three-bedroom apartments. Nine Panhellenic Association sororities, six fraternities, eight non-greek selective living groups, three independent houses, and one living-learning community currently reside on Central Campus. The 300 Swift apartment complex and 301 Swift Townhouses are also a part of Central Campus. Central features amenities such as a swimming pool, basketball courts, a small gym, and Thrive. Students can also purchase groceries, cooking supplies and other living necessities at Uncle Harry’s General Store at Mill Village.

DURHAM AFTER DARK Best of Duke Winner Shooters Salon II: It’s no surprise that Duke students voted Shooters the best bar for undergraduates and the bar nd Shooters is especially popping on Wednesday and Saturday nights, and the bar features a bull, cage and newly constructed balcony. But it’s Kim Cates who makes everyone particularly drawn to Shooters. The owner’s love for Duke students is quite clear, as shown by the accessibility of her cell phone and Facebook page, alongside her loyalty to Duke sports. On any other night of the week (especially Thursdays), check out Devine’s Grill & Sports Bar, a more laid-back, but just as social version n find

yourself chatting it up on the outdoor terrace or jamming out to karaoke inside. Best of Duke Winner Fullsteam Brewery: It’s no doubt that Fullsteam was voted the best bar for graduate students. The Rubenstein Arts Center is a hub for artistic production at Duke University. Students, faculty, visiting artists, and other collaborators come together n d hone their skills and create new work. Public programs, n dn n fi screenings and exhibitions, launch this work into the world. The Ruby is also home to the programs in Dance and the Arts of the Moving Image and WXDU 88.7 FM, Duke’s student-run radio station. Established with a founding gift from arts philanthropist David Rubenstein (Trinity ‘70) in 2015 and opened in 2018, the Ruby was designed with the arts in mind. The 70,000+ square foot building encom-

studios, seminar classrooms, a makerspace, the Ruby Lounge, the von der Heyden Studio fi nn ater, and more. The arts center was designed by William Rawn Associates, a Boston-based fi n among its projects numerous arts and music facilities. It sits along Campus Drive, a short walk from the Nasher Museum of Art and the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, with glass facades through which the making of d n fi and other art is visible. With spaces designed to inspire Duke’s creative community, and through programming initiatives supported by the Vice Provost for the Arts, the Rubenstein Arts Center will drive arts education at Duke.
