After being forced to reshuffle the roster, the Blue Devils hit the newly sodded Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium Saturday focused on executing, not worried about the familiar names that watched from the sideline.

Recently stung by a series of injuries to several starters, Duke is looking for new faces to step into new roles. With the season opener against Tulane less than two weeks away, the Blue Devils held their final fall scrimmage early Saturday afternoon, giving plenty of players a chance to leave a favorable impression.

Like in the first fall scrimmage, the defense had the upper hand Saturday, surrendering just two touchdowns and few big plays. Redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Edgar Cerenord were each responsible for tackles for loss, and redshirt freshman linebacker Tinashe Bere sacked starting quarterback Thomas Sirk.

Duke’s depth in the secondary has been touted as one of the team’s primary strengths throughout fall camp, and Saturday’s scrimmage did nothing to dispel that notion. With starting cornerback Bryon Fields and safety DeVon Edwards sitting out, sophomore cornerback Alonzo Saxton II and redshirt sophomore safety Evrett Edwards filled in smoothly. Midway into the game, redshirt sophomore safety Phillip Carter also delivered a thunderous hit on freshman T.J. Rahming, forcing an incompletion.

Duke’s lone turnover occurred toward the end of the afternoon, when freshman safety Brandon Feamster intercepted classmate Daniel Jones.

“Our defense continued on the path of tackling better,” Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said. “We had a number of three-and-outs. Some of those drives that were restarted would have have been three-and-outs.

It is not often that a team beats its opponent twice in one day.

But that is exactly what the Blue Devils accomplished Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va., as they first defeated American 5-4 in a scrimmage and DUKE 5 then again in a practice overtime AMER 4 period. With the victory, Duke wraps up the preseason with a 3-0 record in exhibition games, with two of those wins coming in shutout fashion. Saturday’s road trip marked the first time the Blue Devils traveled for a preseason scrimmage since it visited Wake Forest in 2012.

“We’re getting more game-ready,” Duke head coach Pam Bustin said. “We’re working on set pieces and we’re working on team buildup and [Saturday] gave us an opportunity to experience that in a game situation. [We were able to practice] making changes, having a structured attack and being able to recognize things within the game, too.”

The Blue Devils began preseason camp Aug. 12, returning nine starters from the 2014 team, which garnered a 13-7 record and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. Since then, the team has focused on developing strong chemistry within the different units and establishing a strong defensive foundation.

Defense proved to be one of Duke’s greatest strengths a year ago, ending the season with a 1.2 goals against average—the seventh-best mark in the country—and recorded six shutouts.

The Durham native led the ACC in save percentage last fall and finished second among conference goalkeepers in goals against average en route to collecting second-team All-America honors.

“We always spend time on developing our defensive organization,” Bustin said. “That’s the key to success and the key to building up an attack. We’ve also been really working on our attacking speed, making sure we get numbers around the ball and get people up in the attack. We definitely got to work on that [against American].”

At midfield, Duke will look to senior Aileen Johnson to step into a leadership role. Johnson was named as a National Field Hockey Coaches Association second team All-America honors last season after ranking among the top 20 players in the ACC in assists and points per game.

The Oceanport, N.J., native was a valued playmaker last fall, often stepping up when her team needed it most. Johnson knocked in two game-winners on the year—including the only score in a 1-0 victory against then-No. 7 Princeton—and notched two multiple-assist games.

“Our veterans are our key players,” Bustin said. “It’s the key to make sure that they understand what we’re doing and what’s going on. They need to be able to lead the team on the field as we put more and more people around the group.”

The Blue Devils’ exhibition contest against American—a team Duke could very well see again in the NCAA tournament—also doubled as a dress rehearsal for their season opener, which will be on the road.

The chance for the kids to practice getting off a bus, deciding where to eat and dealing with the logistics of an away game are important parts of Duke’s preseason training this year, Bustin said.

The Blue Devils will open their season Friday in Stanford, Calif., against California and stick around until Sunday to face off against Stanford on its home turf.

“Now it’s really going to be about getting game-ready with some of the key people that we’ve identified over the last two weeks,” Bustin said. “We’re going to use our depth to our advantage and give the team opportunity to build on their flow.”

Mindfulness meditation practice is widespread and strikingly popular in contemporary America and around the globe. In the course we will examine in detail the Buddhist roots of these popular meditation practices and how the practices have been received and interpreted by their advocates.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Last year, the Blue Devil offense sputtered out of the gates in the UNC Nike Classic, getting shut out in back-to-back losses despite owning the No. 10 preseason ranking.

That does not seem to be an issue this time around—Duke’s offense is up and running.

The Blue Devils kicked off their regular-season slate in style Friday, dispatching Fresno State 5-0 at Fetzer Field to open the UNC Nike Classic. Head coach Robbie Church’s squad DUKE 5 was relentless on FRES ST. 0 the offensive end, outshooting the Bulldogs 35-8 and building a quick 3-0 lead in the opening period before coasting to the victory after intermission.

“We scored more goals in training [than last year]. We’ve got more attacking options this year than we had last year. But it’s always great to see five on the board,” Church said. “That’s something we really concentrated on this week after the Clemson [exhibition] game. We really concentrated on the offensive side of the ball, and it was nice to see that

We’re deep, so we’re still looking for our lineups. I like where we are.”

“I have a feeling this is going to be a season to remember,” Kerr said before putting down the microphone.

The Blue Devils gave fans a memorable night of soccer Friday, battling No. 17 UNC Charlotte to a 1-1 draw in Duke’s CHAR 1 final tune-up of the preseason. Both offenses were unable to find a rhythm DUKE 1 early and the match played out as a defensive struggle. After 74 scoreless minutes, Duke found the

back of the net on a header by junior Brody Huitema, but the 49ers responded with a score of their own off a free kick just four minutes later.

With the final seconds counting down, the Blue Devils mounted a final attack from their own 18-yard box but the final touch sent the ball wide right of the UNC Charlotte goal.

“There’s a good feeling amongst the group,” Kerr said. “[The team has] great spirit and we have a chip on our shoulders. We haven’t done well the past two years and we feel that we have enough talent and the mentality to take it to the next level. Everyone feels that way on this team and we’re excited about our challenges ahead.”

Although Kerr’s squad did not score in the first half, Duke still showed signs of offensive promise. The Blue Devils moved the ball down the field with ease, gener-

ating scoring chances and earning three corner kicks to the 49ers’ one.

Freshman Oliver Spring made a splash on the defensive end of the ball early, jumping in front of a shot to make a dramatic block and keep UNC Charlotte off the scoreboard. Duke caught a break in the 22nd minute when a 49ers forward sent a clear shot at the net wide right.

The match more closely resembled a heated conference rivalry game than the exhibition match-up that it was. Both teams brought their own brand of physicality to the field and refused to be pushed around. With both squads dialing up the intensity on another hot, humid North Carolina evening, it did not take long for tempers to boil over.

Barely 10 minutes into the first half, a group of Charlotte players took issue with a foul committed by Blue Devil defender Cody Brinkman. A shoving match ensued that needed three referees to intervene before things went any further, a sequence that set the tone for the rest of the match.

“Before the game, we knew that these guys were a bit chippy as a team,” Huitema said. “We knew it was going to be physical and we have a good group of guys out there that are willing to battle. We’re not going to back down from any team. If they want to kick and scratch, we’re going to give it right back to them.”

The ball finally found the back of the net in the second half, as fatigue and the relentless pressure of both teams’ offenses left holes in otherwise stalwart defensive lines.

After parrying a series of 49ers’ opportunities to open the second half, Duke got its chance on a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Bryson Asher lofted the ball on a direct path to the forehead of Huitema, who benefitted from the missteps of several defenders. The ball passed UNC Charlotte goalkeeper Austin Pack and Duke grabbed the lead with less than 16 minutes remaining.

“I actually had a front post run that I was initially making, but I saw the ball in the air and saw that it was going to travel a bit further than where my run was so I just stopped,” Huitema said. “Luckily the people in front of me fell over a bit or missed it and I was able to simply put my head on it.”

The stands—still holding a freshman audience—erupted with cheers. All of the momentum was with the Blue Devils.

And it would stay that way—for a grand total of less than four minutes.

The 49ers notched their own goal with the aid of a sloppy Blue Devil sequence. A foul gave the 49ers a free kick, which found its way to UNC Charlotte freshman Maclean Holbrook, who snuck See M. SOCCER on Page 15

Impact of newcomers shows strides in recruiting The Chronicle A retooled Wallace Wade Stadium was not the only unfamiliar part of Duke’s scrimmage Saturday afternoon.

A flurry of young, new faces took the field in place of the veteran players fans have been used to seeing during the past four years. Gone are players such as Anthony Boone, Jamison Crowder, Issac Blakeney, Laken Tomlinson and David Helton, who were vital to turning around a program that had historically ranked near the bottom of the college football world. In their places are fresh, talented players like T.J. Rahming, Keyston Fuller, Nicodem Pierre and Chris Taylor—players who have yet to play a game in a Blue Devil uniform.

The group of incoming true freshmen and redshirt freshmen have big shoes to fill with the departure of AllACC players such as Crowder and Tomlinson, but there is confidence that gains on the recruiting trail in the last two years will bring even better talent to Durham. The last two recruiting classes were undoubtedly head coach David Cutcliffe’s best at Duke. The Blue Devils received their first-ever ESPN 300 commit when Trevon Lee committed to the program in 2014, and then received a number of high-profile commitments in 2015 to give Duke a top-50 recruiting class, according to ESPN. Cutcliffe is finally beginning to see some of the talent his coaching staff has reeled in during the past years in action.

So far, the young players are living up to the hype, with some challenging established veterans for first-team reps as the team prepares for its Sept. 3 opener at Tulane.

The versatility and athleticism of the young players has stood out in the past few weeks. Pierre—who was a four-star recruit at quarterback back in 2014, shined in Saturday’s scrimmage—​bulldozing his way through defenders for 31 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. The Miami native is poised to make an impact if injuries to backfield regulars Shaun Wilson and Joseph Ajeigbe persist.

Pierre is not the only new face with the versatility to play multiple positions. Fuller, a true freshman, was slated to play defensive back at Duke, but Cutcliffe is now utilizing his services on the other side of the line of scrimmage as a wide receiver. He showcased his speed Saturday when he hauled in a 68-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quentin Harris late in the scrimmage, on a day when the first-team wide receivers struggled with route running and drops.

Although Cutcliffe is still trying to figure out where Fuller will play, his speed and talent will make him a threat anywhere on the field.

“Fuller played offense in high school,” Cutcliffe said. “After seeing him and giving him a real opportunity at corner, I wanted to take a look at him at wide receiver. He has really got great top-end speed.”

Fuller’s classmate and fellow top recruit, Rahming saw first-team reps throughout the scrimmage at wide receiver and was targeted on a number of plays. The Powder Springs, Ga., native was a threat wherever he lined up on the field in high school and had an impressive performance ​in the U.S. Army All-America game in January. Listed at 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, Rahming is undersized—like Crowder—but his toughness has put him in a position to bypass a redshirt year and make an immediate impact for the Blue Devils.

On one play Saturday, Rahming was running a deep

route down the right sideline and hauled in a pass, only to have the ball jarred loose after a huge hit from safety Phillip Carter. As everyone on the sideline held their breath, the freshman popped back up and never had to leave the game.

“No matter his size, he’s going to keep coming back up at you,” redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash said. “And you see right after he took that big hit, he was right back in the game. He didn’t ask to come out for a sub or anything.”

With a new stadium and plenty of new talent, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic in Durham this fall. The team has plenty of spots to fill, but it also has an arsenal of athleticism with the some of the nation’s former top recruits See FRESH FACES on Page 15

“I’m anxious to see both Thomas and Parker [on film and] see what they did well,” Cutcliffe said. “This is pure game circumstance, other than that they didn’t get hit. Gave up the one big sack, Thomas did, in a series that had really gotten going, which will be a valuable lesson for him. He should have never taken the sack. Obviously we got our hands on balls today that should have been caught.”

Freshman Keyston Fuller delivered the biggest play of the day Saturday, reeling in a 68-yard touchdown toss from freshman quarterback Quentin Harris.

Fuller finished the day with more than 100 receiving yards.

Junior wide receiver Johnell Barnes—who starred in the first scrimmage last weekend with five catches for 103 yards—struggled to put up similar numbers Saturday. The Lehigh Acres, Fla., native was often unable to separate from defensive backs and dropped a few passes.

“Johnell missed a couple of real opportunities today,” Cutcliffe said. “He is going to have to understand that if he’s going to play here, you’re going to be consistent.”

a partially torn pectoral muscle and sophomore Shaun Wilson and redshirt sophomore Joseph Ajeigbe sitting out while nursing leg injuries, senior Shaquille Powell and redshirt freshman Nicodem Pierre took most of the snaps at tailback.

For Pierre, the scrimmage was an additional opportunity to showcase his talents after converting from quarterback to running back to give Cutcliffe more depth in the backfield. The Miami native demonstrated vision and agility, rushing for 31 yards on nine carries and bouncing to the outside for a one-yard touchdown.

“Nico came out and he executed at a high level. He looked comfortable in the backfield,” Sirk said. “He’s a great runner—he has great vision. I think he’ll be able to help our offense in a big way.”

As camp winds down and the Blue Devils ready for the Green Wave, the return of many of Duke’s key contributors is one of Cutcliffe’s main priorities. Ten scholarship players were unavailable for Saturday’s action, and the Blue Devils will take a breather and look to get healthy before continuing with preparations for their season opener.

“We’re not going to do much [Sunday],” Cutcliffe said. “I am going to give them Monday completely off. So we won’t take the field again with pads on until Tuesday morning. So after the next round or two of treatment… hopefully we get a couple of those guys [back].”

her first career start, and the first since teammate Cassie Pecht accomplished the feat at the outset of her National Rookie of the Year campaign in 2012.

“Just stepping on the field, getting a couple good passes and ultimately scoring a goal for my team was incredible—I mean there’s nothing like it,” said Racioppi, who came to Durham as the second-ranked recruit in her class. “I know we had a scrimmage, but this is the real thing. It’s the start of our season, it’s what’s going to give us momentum going forward. It was just so much fun to be on the field.”

It did not take long for one of Racioppi’s classmates to join her in the scoring column. Forward Kayla McCoy entered the game as a substitute in the 22nd minute and found the back of the net in the 30th minute to put the Bulldogs (0-1) in a 2-0 hole. A defensive clear by junior captain Christina Gibbons left McCoy—another top-three recruit—with a breakaway opportunity, and the Lincolnwood, Ill., product displayed some nifty footwork in maneuvering around Theroux before depositing the ball into a wide-open net.

At that point, the rout was on, but the Blue Devils showed no signs of letting up. After a pair of freshmen had notched their first career goals, sophomore Casey Martinez—who averaged 20 minutes per game as a freshman but did not find the back of the net—tallied her first career score in the 35th minute. Martinez took the ball near the left corner of the box and, with a tiny bit of separation from her defender, fired a rocket that snuck just inside the right post to stretch the Duke lead to 3-0.

In the second half, Racioppi—who led the team with five shots in just 47 minutes of action—continued her impressive debut with another goal in the 56th minute.

Racioppi etched her name in the record books again with her second goal, becoming just the third Duke player to tally two goals in her first start.

The Blue Devils tacked on another goal late in the second half, when a run into the box by junior Toni Payne lead to an easy tap-in goal for sophomore forward Imani Dorsey.

“Having all those players scoring goals for us is a testament to the depth we have this year and it’s really special,” Racioppi said. “We’re able to make subs and have people come in and impact the game, and that’s big for us. We don’t want to have people just come into the game, we want them to come in and impact it, and I think every player that stepped on the field today did just that.”

Duke had its chances to reclaim the lead but could not convert.

“Every coach at this point at the season wants perfection, but it’s hard,” Kerr said. “There’s still a lot of learning to do and a lot of processes you have to go through fitness-wise…. Two games in and we’ve given up only two sloppy goals, but that’s easily fixable. So overall I’m pleased, but there’s a lot of sorting out to do.”

With the team’s Aug. 28 season opener drawing closer, Kerr is looking to his team’s depth and experience to help his younger players rise to the occasion. Of Duke’s six newcomers this season, three are graduate transfers who will help provide stability.

“You can see the maturity [on the team],” Kerr said. “Some of them look like they’re seniors out there. I’m so pleased with their progress. It’s a young team still. We have a lot of balance. If we can get Tyler [Hilliard] and Carter [Manley] back on the field, we will really look good.”

“It felt good to be in here to say the least. It was a great experience to come back and see the new revamped Wallace Wade Stadium,” Cash said. “I definitely think that we have a newer revamped team as well, so it’s only right that we come back into the setting.”

on the right flank and junior captain Christina Gibbons on the left. But Wildcat defenders Kellyn Ashby and Marissa Cook always managed to block the Blue Devils’ low crosses. In the 13th minute, junior midfielder Toni Payne corralled a loose ball outside the box, dribbled past a defender and, when she had a clear sight on goal, powered a shot that missed the target by few inches.

Nine minutes later, Racioppi notched the first goal of the game and her third of the season. The Ocean Township, N.J., native sent a shot toward the net from about 25 yards out—normally a low-percentage chance—but the ball curled back toward the goal and surprised Weber State goalkeeper Nikki Pittman, who did not try to turn it away.

“I had the ball, looked up and I just went for it,” Racioppi said. “My teammates were making fun of me. I think I surprised them too.”

The Blue Devils could have doubled their advantage from outside the box three times in a 10-minutes span, but Pittman controlled the strikes from Payne, Gibbons and right defender Morgan Reid.

McCoy found the back of the net in the 37th minute after being set up by her teammates.

Redshirt sophomore Malinda Allen crossed the ball from the right side of the pitch and redshirt junior midfielder Danielle Duhl connected on a header from the penalty spot. The shot was off-target but a Wildcat defender tried to stop it, leaving a bouncing ball only five yards from the goal. McCoy rolled the ball home with a soft header that Pittman could not punch away.

first half and went to the locker room with a commanding 2-0 advantage. Only four minutes into the second period, redshirt sophomore midfielder Cassie Pecht sent the ball into the top corner with her left foot to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead—the Mechanicsburg, Pa., native’s first goal since returning from a knee injury that has kept her sidelined for the past two seasons.

Although Racioppi and Payne each had another chance to add onto the lead, it was McCoy who sealed the victory with 10 minutes remaining, sneaking a shot past Weber State goalie Sydnie Brough from outside the box.

“In practices we work a lot on defense,” Racioppi said. “So a lot of this creativity that you’re seeing and these shots from the outside is natural for our players. Kayla ripped a beautiful shot and she has the technical ability to do it and she went for it. It’s awesome that we can put the ball on someone’s foot and something good is going to happen.”

The 4-0 victory against the Wildcats not only marked the second contest in which Duke scored at least four goals, but also its second straight shutout, after blanking Fresno State 5-0 in Friday’s opener.

“The biggest thing [in defense] is staying compact,” sophomore goalkeeper E.J. Proctor said. “This preseason we’ve been working on moving together, keeping our lines and not letting any second ball [beat us].”

The Blue Devils will have their first early-season test Friday in State College, Pa., as Church’s squad takes on No. 6 Penn State. “[Penn State] is a great team and a great program,” Church said. “We’re looking forward to going up there. It’ll let us know where we stand at the national level.”
