A new focus and specialized training led the Blue Devils’ rowing team to the NCAA championship for the first time in the team’s 18-year program history.

In my first month as sports editor, Duke rowing made the NCAA championship for the first time in its 18-year history, a women’s golf freshman shattered records on her way to a dominant individual national championship win and the Blue Devil baseball team made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1961.

With the football team claiming its first bowl win since 1961 in December, all of these achievements have me thinking—who will make history in the next 11 months?

In these pages, you will find an in-depth look at some of Duke’s most recent athletic accomplishments and a preview of what is to come, including the current and former Blue Devils poised to represent Duke in Rio de Janeiro later this summer as head coach Mike Krzyzewski prepares for his final Olympics.

While the women’s soccer team takes in its historic trip to China, the Blue Devils are hoping to return to the College Cup final with 10 of 11 starters returning from the team that fell in the national title game last year and a top-five recruiting class.

Duke’s 27th sport—softball—begins play in Spring 2018, and its head coach is taking steps to build a competitive program as the summer begins.

We haven’t even touched on several other Blue Devil programs in this issue, so you’ll have to keep up with our coverage throughout the year to find out more.

Freshmen arrive on campus early as Krzyzewski navigates packed offseason Amrith Ramkumar The Chronicle With an incoming class of six freshmen coming in and more and more players across the country leaving school early, head coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff made a change this offseason.

Four of the six players comprising Duke’s third straight top-ranked recruiting class—Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles, Frank Jackson and Javin DeLaurier—left high school early to enroll in the University’s first summer session and join the team early. Along with center Marques Bolden, who committed in late May and will arrive on campus this week, versatile forwards Tatum and Giles and combo guard Jackson are expected to make the Blue Devils one of the favorites to get to the Final Four next year despite losing ACC Freshman of the Year Brandon Ingram and point guard Derryck Thornton, who announced his decision to transfer in the spring but has yet to finalize a destination.

The extra time could prove valuable for the new Duke freshmen, who will join a veteran core featuring All-American guard Grayson Allen, senior guard Matt Jones and forward Amile Jefferson.

to do certain things with them now, and then they get accustomed to one another,” Krzyzewski said at his annual K Academy Fantasy Camp last week. “By the time the school year comes, they’re friends, they’re acclimated [and] they’re better.”

Having several incoming freshmen on campus earlier is part of a busy offseason for the 69-year old head coach that featured knee replacement surgery and inguinal hernia surgery. Krzyzewski said he has felt younger and healthier after the

procedures, adding that he has no plans for retirement in the future.

“He’s attacked his rehab like crazy, so for our guys, he’s set a pretty good example for what you need to do if you have an injury,” assistant coach Jon Scheyer said. “He looks great. You would never think he would have just had two surgeries back to back.”

in Rio de Janeiro July 16 and will likely be gone for more than a month, with the gold medal game scheduled for Aug. 21.

Although his entire team will be together on campus for the second summer session, when incoming freshmen traditionally came to campus, starting July 5—except potentially DeLaurier, who has a chance to compete in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship—Krzyzewski said he was not worried given the number of upperclassmen returning as well as sophomores Luke Kennard and Chase Jeter. Assistant coaches Jon Scheyer and Nate James will lead the team while Krzyzewski and Capel are with Team USA. Among the players who could follow Krzyzewski’s example for attacking rehab this summer are Giles and Jefferson, who are both recovering from serious injuries and will be key pieces for Duke in the paint next year.

After averaging 11.4 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in the first nine games last year, Jefferson fractured his right foot in practice and missed the rest of his senior season. The Philadelphia native received a medical hardship waiver that granted him another year of eligibility.

‘The bar has been raised’: Duke looks to back up bowl win Sam Turken The Chronicle Coming off their first postseason bowl victory in 54 years, expectations are as high as ever for the Blue Devils.

But that does not mean their offseason has been void of numerous adjustments.

Duke has had to adapt to a slew of coaching changes on both sides of the ball since defeating Indiana in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl Dec. 26. And although it initially appeared as if quarterback would not be a concern for the Blue Devils this summer, an achilles injury to starter Thomas Sirk has left Duke unsure who will start under center in its season opener against N.C. Central Sept. 3.

“Things change and roles have changed,” Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said. “We try to prepare for those types of changes. Just like anything else, you better have a plan in place.”

After offensive coordinator Scottie Montgomery was hired as the head coach at East Carolina, Cutcliffe promoted Zac Roper to offensive coordinator and hired Jim

Bridge from Purdue as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach—which was Roper’s post from 2013 to 2015.

Although Roper has also mentored running backs, he has no previous experience calling offensive plays.

Roper’s offense will be without John Latina, who retired after serving as an assistant head coach and run-game coordinator since 2013. Latina coached seven All-ACC offensive linemen—including first-round draft pick Laken Tomlinson—and was instrumental in the development of Duke’s rushing attack, which averaged 181.9 yards per game in 2014 and 192.9 yards per game in 2015 and brings back its leading rusher in Sirk as well as veteran running backs Jela Duncan and Shaun Wilson. The duo combined for 212 yards in the bowl win against the Hoosiers on 22 carries, highlighted by an 85-yard Wilson touchdown run.

Marcus Johnson—who was an offensive lineman at Mississippi while Cutcliffe coached the Rebels—will fill Latina’s position. A former NFL offensive lineman, Johnson served as an offensive quality control specialist the past three seasons, though he has never directly coached offensive linemen and running backs and will be tasked with replacing the production of All-ACC center Matt Skura, starting guard Lucas Patrick and guard Cody

Robinson. Guard Tanner Stone started all 13 games in 2015, but had back surgery in the spring, making him a question mark up front moving forward.

Despite Roper and Johnson’s limited experience in their new roles, Cutcliffe said he was impressed with what he has seen from the duo so far.

“I thought spring just went on without a glitch,” Cutcliffe said. “With our offense, the structure and work [has] been incredible.”

Another coaching change involved the hiring of Ben Albert as defensive line coach.

As Boston College’s coach for the same position from 2013-2015, Albert helped guide one of the country’s best defensive units last year—the Eagles led the nation in total defense and had a top-five rushing defense.

“Ben Albert was someone that I didn’t know other than that I was blown away by the quality of play of the defensive line of Boston College,” Cutcliffe said. “And the more I researched Ben and [defensive coordinator] Jim Knowles researched Ben, the more I spoke to him about this potential opportunity, I knew he fit.”

Albert has taken over a Blue Devil defensive line that struggled to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks last season.

Duke’s defensive front slowed down run-oriented teams such as Georgia Tech and Northwestern at the start of the 2015 campaign, but the Blue Devils finished with just 17 sacks and often surrendered explosive pass plays, allowing more than 300 yards through the air in their final three games.

Although Duke brings backs four of its five starting defensive backs and will have cornerback Bryon Fields back after he missed last season due to a torn ACL, the Blue Devils will be without three-time All-American strike safety Jeremy Cash and linebacker Dwayne Norman, who led the team with 114 tackles, in 2016.

Cutcliffe said sophomore linebacker Ben Humphreys has attempted to replace Cash’s vocal leadership defensively so far in the offseason. After making 20 tackles during the regular season last year, Humphreys had 11 in Duke’s bowl win.

But regardless of the other storylines surrounding his team in the summer, Cutcliffe knows Sirk’s health will be a heavy focus as the season approaches.

Sirk’s achilles injury followed an up-and-down season during which he showcased his playmaking skills, gaining 3,428 total yards, but often missed targets downfield.

After nursing a lower-body injury throughout much of the second half of the year, the Glen St. Mary, Fla., native accounted for 317 yards and three touchdowns against Indiana.

Cutcliffe said he was encouraged by Sirk’s progress to this point, but if the redshirt senior is not ready for the team’s season opener, Duke will likely turn to Parker Boehme—who started two games last year and threw for 579 yards—and reevaluate its depth at the position and See FOOTBALL on Page 17

Youth movement: Underclassmen-laden lineup sparks Duke Hank Tucker The Chronicle Although the Blue Devils’ lineup featured eight underclassmen for most of the season, they made sure it was no rebuilding year despite a slow start.

After three of Duke’s four top hitters from the 2014-15 team graduated or turned professional, sophomores Jack Labosky and Justin Bellinger came into their own during the second half of the season and freshman Jimmy Herron provided the missing piece of the puzzle to help carry the team to its first NCAA tournament berth since 1961.

The sophomore class made up the core of the lineup, with Labosky and Bellinger becoming key cogs in the batting order at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots during the last two months of the season and classmates Michael Smiciklas, Peter Zyla and Max Miller adding production at the bottom of the lineup.

“Everyone on the offensive end is doing a lot more than we had last year, and guys are kind of stepping into leadership roles throughout the lineup,” Labosky said.

“Everyone’s just kind of following each other’s footsteps, and it’s more of a team aspect, rather than one single captain.”

potential at the plate during their first year in Durham.

Bellinger led the team with 63 strikeouts and batted just .227. Labosky had just three extra-base hits—all doubles—in 98 at-bats, and Smiciklas and Miller did not fare much better. In head coach Chris Pollard’s third year, Duke seemed to take a step back, finishing with a 10-19 ACC record and failing to qualify for the conference tournament.

All five in the quintet started at least 20 games as rookies, but their experience

did not turn into wins until Labosky and Bellinger became breakout stars midway through the 2016 campaign.

Following a 12-0 loss to Wake Forest that dropped the Blue Devils to 1-6 in ACC play, Labosky was batting just .224. But Pollard inserted Bellinger into the starting lineup for good the next day after the 6-foot-6 first baseman started just three of Duke’s first 22 games, and the duo formed a formidable tandem in the heart of the order for the rest of the year, sparking the Blue Devils’ 23-9 finish to the regular season.

“You look at guys like Labosky and Bellinger and the growth that they’ve made from last year to this year as players—a huge part of that has to do with Jason Stein, our hitting coach,” Pollard said. “It took time.

It didn’t necessarily show up right away at the beginning of the season, but he stayed patient with them.”

When she took over for Robyn Horner—the only head coach in Duke’s 17-year program history—in July 2015, Megan Cooke Carcagno knew she faced a challenging feat.

The former Wisconsin associate head coach had to implement a more rigorous training program and new mindset, one that she knew could ultimately lead to a significant number of rowers quitting the team.

“It’s just time. Family comes first, school comes second, rowing has to come third,” Cooke Carcagno said of her approach. “When rowing becomes fourth, fifth or sixth, then we won’t be good.”

Although approximately 25 percent of the Blue Devil roster left the program in Cooke Carcagno’s first year, the new mentality paid off, with Duke going from seventh at the 2015 ACC championship to second this year to tie a program record and book its first trip to the NCAA championship.

Last week, the Blue Devils finished 17th at the national championship to cap off a season of progress—one in which the team found a new identity led by Cooke Carcagno and assistant coaches Chuck Rodosky and Chase Graham.

“We have higher expectations, higher standards. It’s not that we never wanted to achieve but we’ve put in very specialized, direct work,” said senior Mary Wilson, a member of the team’s V4 that finished 13th at NCAAs. “We really did start from somewhere and I think that a lot of the alums and some of the former coaching staff really laid the foundation for what we’ve been able to become now.”

In addition to expecting that the team put in two-adays almost every day of the week, Cooke Carcagno also focused on its internal makeup. Entering the season, she set up frequent meetings with the senior class to get to know her new team.

“We have a weekly senior meeting and we brought all the seniors and sat down and said, ‘This is your last year, you have one shot, what kind of team do you want to be on?’” Cooke Carcagno said. “‘What’s the best team you’ve ever dreamed of? How do we make that team this team?’”

Results with the new coaching staff were mixed early in the spring.

The V4 registered a victory against UCLA for the team’s only win of the day at March’s Pac-12 Championship before all of the team’s boats struggled in a dual meet at then-No. 3 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. But the presence of a dual meet against a top-10 See ROWING on Page 19

Blue Devils hungry to return to College Cup final Jack Dolgin The Chronicle Last offseason, Duke was motivated after missing the NCAA tournament for the first time in 12 years.

This year, the offseason fuel for a veteran squad that returns 10 of 11 starters has a different source—coming up one win short of a national championship.

“You’re almost the first loser,” Duke head coach Robbie Church said of the team’s 1-0 loss to Penn State in the College Cup final. “We were focused and were hungry last spring. We were embarrassed because we didn’t go to the NCAA tournament. I see some of the same traits. I don’t see the embarrassed part, but I do see the focused part and I do see the hungry part.”

A deep senior class will lead the Blue Devils in the fall, including co-captains Christina Gibbons and Lizzy Raben, who were members of a defense that allowed

three goals in six NCAA tournament games last season without then-sophomore starter Schuyler DeBree, who tore her ACL Sept. 24 at Boston College.

Duke also returns junior goalkeeper E.J. Proctor, who was the College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense last year and notched 11 shutouts—the most in the ACC. The Blue Devils ranked 14th nationally in goals allowed per game with 0.6 but 55th in goals scored per contest, so Duke has room to improve how it creates offense after gaining possession.

“I would expect when we get here in August that we’ll probably focus a lot defensively but focus more on how to get an attack off strong defensive effort,” Proctor said.

Three other seniors—Rebecca Quinn, Toni Payne and Krysia Sikora—will likely play big minutes next season, with Quinn and Payne previously earning All-ACC accolades.

been on the field for a lot of minutes, too,” Church said.

Without their No. 4 recruiting class on campus in the spring and early this summer, the Blue Devils have focused on technical training through individual and small-group work with Church and assistant coaches Erwin van Bennekom and Carla Overbeck.

In the spring, Duke also played four exhibition matches to get some of its less experienced players more minutes on the field. Although the Blue Devils dropped three of them to Clemson, North Carolina and Virginia, Church said the games offered a chance for players like Kat McDonald, Mary Love Taylor, Anna Munro and Sikora to continue their offseason development, which could pay off in the fall.

Incoming freshmen Mia Gyau and Ella Stevens—the Gatorade National Player of the Year—will also be in the mix for playing time next season as the No. 7 and No. 11 recruits in the country, respectively, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com.

“We have a lot of players who are returning that played last year, but that doesn’t guarantee they’re going to play in August,” Church said. “We’re going to be deeper than we’ve been in a long, long time and maybe ever.”

New talent could help offset the loss of star midfielder Taylor Racioppi, who will likely redshirt to play in the U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea Nov. 13 to Dec. 3, dates that overlap with almost the entire NCAA tournament.

As a freshman last year, Racioppi started 24 of Duke’s 25 games and finished with a teamhigh 20 points from her midfield spot.

The U-20 World Cup is one of three World Cups, along with the U-17 and full national team competitions, and USA Soccer is expected to announced its final roster in mid-June. Racioppi—a member of the most recent international training squad of 21 players and one of only three current players

Young fills out coaching staff, inks first 4 recruits Meredith Cash The Chronicle With more than 18 months until Duke softball plays its first competitive game, head coach Marissa Young has begun shaping the program during her first year in Durham.

Since being hired in July 2015, Young has brought in her first recruiting class, filled out the coaching staff and took part in the groundbreaking of the University’s new softball stadium on East Campus— laying the foundation for what is to come in Spring 2018 when the Blue Devils play their first game.

“There was so much to tackle and to get

up and going in those first eight months,” Young said. “I feel like we are in a good place now where we can kind of catch our breath and rather than ‘do, do, do,’ we have time to plan for what’s coming forward.”

A former North Carolina assistant coach, Young began to assemble her roster soon after she was hired, bringing in four recruits in the Class of 2016—Hannah Pridemore, Allison Florian, Emilie Cieslak and Jazmine Moreno. The quartet will arrive on campus in the fall and redshirt in its first year, representing several of the 12 scholarships Young and her staff can allot in the team’s first four years of competition.

During their redshirt year, Pridemore, Florian, Cieslak and Moreno will compete with Duke’s club softball team, which faces teams from Division II and Division III schools, and work closely with Young and her staff.

“They’re certainly going to get a lot of individual attention [early on],” Young said.

“I think it’s going to be a good year for them to focus on their strength and conditioning, which is important to transitioning to the college level. Academically, they’ll be able to push ahead and then they’ll play with the club team, so they’ll get a chance to lead and travel and just get out onto the field.”

A native of Lithia, Fla., Pridemore headlines the recruiting class. She earned Hillsborough County Western Conference first-team honors in her junior season after leading the district with a .526 batting average while also posting a .628 slugging percentage and .529 on-base percentage.

The catcher and third baseman also enjoyed a fruitful club softball career, leading the Tampa Mustangs to the 2015 Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship and finishing 17th with the Florida Fire at the 2012 Amateur Softball Association National Championship.

“We have really focused on utility players, versatile players,” Young said. “All of our pitchers hit and play another position, which is somewhat unique in softball—we really strategized about that.”

With the help of Brooks and assistant coach Jon Whithaus, Carta figured out that she was standing too far away from the ball and changed her setup ahead of the final event of the year.

“Having good impacts helps your confidence, so I started playing well again during the practice round,” Carta said. “I saw a few shots were getting really close to the pin, and when I had those shots, I tried to putt and the ball was rolling in.

That gave me that little bit of confidence

going into the first round.”

But the biggest change in Carta’s game came on the greens, where she had struggled for much of the season.

“It was just a nightmare on the green and I was struggling a lot,” Carta said.

Playing the offseason waiting game On March 23, Blue Devil fans received news that in most years would leave them with wide grins on their faces.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari announced that every draft-eligible player on his team would enter the NBA draft— yes, all 12 Wildcats ranging from surefire lottery pick Jamal Murray to walk-on Dillon Pulliam.

But rest assured, Kentucky will have enough players to take the floor next season and many will be part of the group that decided to “leave” school months earlier due to new pre-draft rules adopted by the NCAA in January 2015.

With the rule changes, players are provided greater flexibility because they are allowed to wait 10 days after the combine—held this year from May 10 to May 15—to withdraw from the draft pool and return to college as long as they don’t hire an agent. Previously, any underclassman that declared for the draft permanently lost collegiate eligibility, creating a final list of players definitely leaving school by the end of April.

Now the NBA hopefuls have the ability to gauge their standing on draft boards by hiring draft advisors, and can even make the NBA pay for costs associated with attending the draft combine. If things don’t shape up the way they want them to, early entrants

can decide to withdraw their names from the draft and head back to the college ranks with a scholarship waiting.

With the updated rules in place, there was a spike in early entrants from 48 in 2015 to 116 this year, including many athletes who wouldn’t normally have considered the idea of leaving based on their performance last season. But the opportunity to display their talents in front of scouts and in 5-on5 scrimmages gives players another chance to get an NBA team to take the bait on

potential and disregard the stat sheet altogether—a luxury often afforded only to international prospects in the past.

The NCAA’s primary goal of promoting “informed decisions” is also attainable with the new regulations.

The chance to work out at the draft combine and meet with teams gives players a realistic snapshot of where they stand compared to their counterparts, instead of a fantasy driven by ceiling and floor projections or online mock drafts. Better yet, the advice could be just what is needed for players to make drastic improvements in

college should they forgo the draft.

Take for example Wisconsin forward Nigel Hayes or North Carolina’s Justin Jackson—both of who would have likely heard their names called at some point in the draft but elected to return to school with 55 other players. Without having to worry about being drafted, the two players had the chance to determine whether the ballpark range in which they would have been selected was desirable.

With only first-round contracts guaranteed by the NBA, extra time with teams and advisors during the pre-draft process can convince players like Hayes and Jackson to boost their stocks with another year in college.

But the residual impact from the new transfer rules may, in fact, come back to haunt well, the players.

The new pre-draft process places the biggest burden on college coaches, who are forced to toe the line between making assumptions about a player’s intentions and looking out for the future of their program.

To mitigate risk, coaches will almost immediately expand their recruiting efforts to compensate for the potential loss of a key cog for the following season. Secure the perfect backup and you can rest easy at night knowing you have a plan should a player decide to head to the draft. Men’s basketball Mike Krzyzewski

After capturing gold medals in 2008 and 2012, Krzyzewski will look to become the first head coach ever to lead the United States to three consecutive gold medals when he heads to Rio de Janeiro later this summer.

The 2016 Olympics will be Krzyzewski’s final run, as the Duke head coach is set to step down after the tournament.

Leading up to the summer, the 69-year old has been rehabilitating from knee replacement surgery and putting the final touches on the Blue Devils’ incoming recruiting class, with five-star center Marques Bolden committing to Duke in late May to give Krzyzewski his third straight top-ranked freshman class.

Before departing for South America, Krzyzewski will have to trim a list of 30 Olympic team finalists to a final 12-man roster by late June. The national team will then play five exhibition contests in the United States before leaving the country to begin its quest for gold.

Jeff Capel

Capel joined USA Basketball in July 2013, so Capel will be making his first trip to the Olympics following his stint as court coach and scout during the 2014 FIBA World Cup. An associate head coach with the Blue Devils, Capel will be part of a staff featuring Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau and Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Monty Williams as assistants to Krzyzewski.

The Fayetteville, N.C., native was Krzyzewski’s starting point guard from 19931997 and rejoined the Duke basketball program as an assistant in 2011 after nine years as a head coach at both Virginia Commonwealth and Oklahoma.

Capel led Blake Griffin and the Sooners to the Elite Eight in 2009 and has been instrumental in helping the Blue Devils secure three straight top-ranked recruiting classes. He was promoted to associate coach in July 2013 and associate head coach before the 2014-15 campaign, in which Duke captured its fifth national championship and Capel was part of his first national title team.

Kyrie Irving

Irving led the United States to the gold medal in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup as the tournament’s most valuable player, and now hopes to make the Olympic team for the first time in his career. The dynamic point guard competed as part of the United States Select Team that trained against the 2012 Olympic squad after his rookie season in the NBA. Irving was named as one of the 30 Olympic team finalists in January and will be competing for one of the 12 spots on the final roster by the end of June along with fellow point guards Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, John Wall and Mike Conley. The five-year NBA veteran is averaging 24.3 points per game this postseason for the Cavaliers, who are in the middle of their NBA Finals series against the Golden State Warriors.

During the 2010-11 campaign, Irving was one of the most explosive guards in the country as a freshman at Duke, scoring in double figures in his first 11 games before missing the rest of the regular season with a toe injury. If he makes the Olympic team, Irving will once again compete internationally for Blue Devil head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Fencing Ibtihaj Muhammad

Muhammad has spent many years training for her Olympic dream, and she will finally make history this summer as the first American woman to compete while wearing a hijab, a veil traditionally worn by Muslim women in the presence of men outside of their immediate family and non-Muslims.

Muhammad is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in saber and No. 12 in the world.

The Maplewood, N.J., native has medaled in the team saber competition at the past five World Fencing Championships. But at age 30, Muhammad had never qualified for the biggest stage until she clinched a position on the Olympic team in February.

To honor her pioneering accomplishment for American Muslims, TIME Magazine named her to its 100 Most Influential People list in April.

During her college career, Muhammad was a three-time All-American at Duke in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and won the Junior Olympic National Championship in 2005.

Diving Abby Johnston

Johnston is one of Duke’s most decorated athletes ever, dominating the ACC in diving

during her first three years with the Blue Devils before claiming a silver medal in the 3-meter springboard synchronized diving event at the 2012 London Olympics.

The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native took the 2011-12 college season off as she focused on training for the Olympics, and she narrowly qualified for the team at the Olympic Trials before reaching the podium in London with teammate Kelci Bryant.

Since her college career ended, Johnston has balanced her international diving career with medical school at Duke, and she recently competed in the 2016 FINA Diving World Cup in February in Rio de Janeiro. Johnston finished in eighth in the 3-meter synchronized springboard with Laura Ryan.

Johnston was the first Duke diver ever to qualify for the NCAA championships, and she was the 2011 national champion in the 3-meter springboard and earned AllAmerica recognition twice in the 1-meter springboard and twice in the 3-meter springboard. Johnston captured five individual ACC championships during her career and was the ACC Women’s Diver of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

She returned to Durham for her senior year after the 2012 Olympics, but seasonending shoulder surgery after competing in just two meets cut her career short.

Mackenzie Willborn

Although Willborn only has a year of collegiate experience under her belt, she has an outside chance to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games later this summer.

The Flower Mound, Texas, native had a solid showing at the 2015 USA Diving Winter National Championships in Indiana, notching a 12th place finish in the final round of the women’s 3-meter springboard. Last summer, Willborn placed third in the same event against the junior age group and finished in the top 10 in the senior competition.

In addition to competing nationally, Willborn posted a solid performance during her first year as a Blue Devil. She won the 10-meter platform competition at the Nike Cup in November and earned the top score on the one-meter and three-meter platforms on two separate occasions during her rookie campaign.

Track and field Shannon Rowbury

Rowbury has been one of the top distance runners in the nation for the last decade and heads into this summer’s Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., July 1-10 looking to qualify for her third straight Olympics in the 1,500 meters.

The current American record holder in the 1,500 meters with a 3:56.29 last July, Rowbury won the 1,500 meters at the U.S.

Women’s basketball Lindsey Harding

After being a finalist for a spot on the 2012 Olympic team, Harding will look to make her first Olympic appearance in Rio. But the former top overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft will not be representing the red, white and blue.

Harding was naturalized as a citizen of Belarus in February 2015 and hopes to lead the country to the Olympics with a top-five finish in this June’s qualifying tournament. Harding last represented Belarus at EuroBasket Women 2015, where she averaged 5.3 assists per game and led her team to a fourth-place finish. The Belarus women finished sixth at the 2008 Olympics before failing to qualify in 2012.

The former Blue Devil left Durham as one of the most decorated players in program history. In addition to being only the second player in program history to have her number retired, Harding won the Naismith Award during her senior season in 2007. The former Duke standout currently plays for the New York Liberty in the WNBA.

Women’s golf Candy Hannemann

She won her second straight USA outdoor championship in 2009 in the 1,500 meters and went on to win the bronze medal at the World championship in Berlin that year.

At Duke, Rowbury was the 2007 national champion in the indoor mile as a senior and bested school records in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and 3000-meter steeplechase during the outdoor season, but none of her personal-best times made the official Duke record books since she competed unattached during the spring of her senior year.

Curtis Beach

After finishing his decorated collegiate career in 2014 for the Blue Devils, Beach has been training for the decathlon portion of the U.S. Olympic Trials with the hope of qualifying for his first Olympic Games.

Beach participated in the 2012 Olympic Trials, where he made headlines for slowing down in the last event—the 1,500 meters— to allow Ashton Eaton to set the new decathlon world record.

The two-time NCAA champion in the heptathlon has his name littered throughout the Duke record books, holding the top spot in the heptathlon, decathlon, indoor 5,000 meters,

outdoor 200 meters, outdoor 400 meters and outdoor long jump.

Most recently, Beach participated in the 2016 International Amateur Athletic Federation World Indoor Championships in late March for the United States, taking fourth place in the heptathlon with a score of 6,118.

Megan Clark

The most decorated pole vaulter in Blue Devil history will head to the U.S. Olympic Trials with the opportunity to qualify for her first Olympic Games. Clark graduated in May and was named ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Year as a junior.

The Fort Benning, Ga., native set school records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault during the 2014-15 campaign and has continued to rewrite the record books during her final season in Durham. On April 24, Clark’s 15 feet, 2 ¼ inches clearance—4.6 meters—qualified her for the trials, which have a 4.5-meter threshold.

The indoor first-team All-American will conclude her career with the NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene June 8-11 before turning her attention to qualifying for the Olympics. At the 2012 Olympic games, world No. 1 Jennifer Suhr cleared 4.75 meters to win the gold medal, and competitors needed to clear 4.55 meters to advance past the qualifying round.

Women’s golf Laetitia Beck

With just days remaining before the June 11 Olympic qualifying deadline, former Blue Devil Laetitia Beck is poised to represent Israel as golf returns to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

Beck is the 235th-ranked player in the world, but golf’s Olympic qualifying rules should prove advantageous to the 2014 graduate. With talentheavy countries maxing out their player allocations, room opens up for representatives from countries without as much internal competition.

Beck is the only Israeli on the LPGA Tour—she became the first Israeli to ever compete on the LPGA Tour during a start in 2011—so there are no fellow countrywomen who could potentially edge her out for a spot in the summer games.

After making eight cuts in 14 starts during her rookie year on the LPGA Tour in 2015, Beck has seen weekend action in just three tournaments so far this season. The Caesarea, Israel, native recently posted the best finish of her career, though, after tying for 15th at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic May 5-8.

Golfers this summer on both the men’s and women’s side will compete in a traditional 72-hole stroke play format, and Hannemann—a native of Rio de Janiero—will look to nab the automatic spot awarded to Brazil as the host nation.

As a Blue Devil, Hannemann helped lead Duke to the national championship in 1999, finishing as the runner-up individually.

She went on to claim the individual title two years later, besting future LPGA star Lorena Ochoa on the first playoff hole in the 2001 tournament. Hannemann was named National Player of the Year that season, her final in a Blue Devil uniform.

Later that calendar year, Hannemann finished as the low amateur at the U.S. Open, setting the stage for a successful professional career in which she has earned almost $500,000. Hannemann initially retired from competitive golf in 2009, got married and had two children in 2012 and 2014—but returned when rumors of golf making its way to the Olympics Games in Rio surfaced. Hannemann started practicing again in March 2015 and at 36 years old, will be more than a decade older than many of the women on the course.

Leona Maguire

The second-ranked amateur in the world and junior at Duke sits comfortably within the top-60 standings cutoff for this summer’s games—she is currently No. 48—and is the highest ranked player from Ireland.

Maguire led Duke in scoring average during each of her first two seasons and captured four individual wins during that same span. The Cavan, Ireland, native also claimed National Player of the Year honors in 2015 and has posted 16 top-10 finishes in 19 starts.

The junior also has plenty of valuable experience outside of NCAA competition, as Maguire has competed in three of women’s golf’s five professional majors—the British Open, ANA Inspiration and Evian Masters— and advanced to the round of 16 in last year’s British Amateur Open. Later this summer, Maguire will have another opportunity to test her game against some of the best young players in the world when she represents Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup for the third time in her career.

An All-ACC honoree and former indoor AllAmerican, Banks has been one of Duke’s top distance runners throughout her four years in Durham. The Mamaroneck, N.Y., native will compete for a spot on the Olympic team after she concludes her Duke career at the NCAA championship beginning June 8.

Banks qualified for the 800 meters in the Olympic trials at the ACC outdoor championship May 15, clocking a time of 2:02.50—which earned her a silver medal and ranks second in Duke history. Banks then clinched a spot in the NCAA championship May 27 when she finished first in the 800 meters at the NCAA East preliminary round with a time of 2:02.49.

Although the 800 and 1,500 meters have been Banks’ specialties, the senior has also competed with Duke’s relay teams. In 2013, Banks was a member of a relay squad that posted the second-fastest time in school history in the sprint medley relay. Last year, Banks helped Duke’s 4-x-400 meter relay squad post the third-fastest time in Duke history.

Another Blue Devil who will participate in the NCAA outdoor championship before trying to compete at the Olympic trials, Thompson is one of Duke’s most decorated long-distance runners.

Throughout his first four years in Durham, Thompson specialized mainly in the steeplechase and 5,000 meters. But this

year, the graduate student has benefitted from shifting his attention to the 10,000 meters, the event he would run at the Olympic trials.

The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native broke Robbie Perkins’ all-time Duke record in the 10,000 meters in April with a time of 28:47.48—which was, at the time, also the fastest finish among all Division I distance runners this spring. A month earlier, Thompson finished second in 10,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays with a time of 29:02.18.

Thompson has continued to compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000 meters in order to avoid running the 10,000 meters— the longest running event in track and field— every weekend. Thomas Lang

A two-time All-American, Lang has been one of Duke’s top javelin specialists. In 2015, the 6-foot-7 Royersford, Pa,. native set a Duke record at the NCAA championship with a throw of 237 feet, 10 inches and won his second consecutive ACC title thanks to heave of 231 feet, 8 inches.

At this season’s ACC championship, Lang recorded a throw of 211 feet, 8 inches to earn second team All-ACC honors. The redshirt senior was unable to qualify for the NCAA championship this year but could find himself at the trials thanks to his previous performances.

One of the Blue Devils’ most experienced players, Quinn has spent two consecutive spring semesters away from Durham preparing for major soccer tournaments with the Canadian national team. In 2015, Quinn prepared for the Women’s World Cup, but was not selected to the final roster for the event.

The versatile midfielder has plenty of international experience, however, as she participated in the 2015 Pan American Games, 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship and the 2016 Algarve Cup—which Canada won. Quinn has also trained with Canada’s U-20 team and played in the 2012 U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan.

The Toronto native was a third-team AllACC performer last year and helped Duke advance to the national championship game. Quinn was part of a defensive unit that led the ACC with 14 shutouts and with 10 of their 11 starters returning, the Blue Devils hope to get back to the College Cup final and capture the program’s first national championship next year.

Swimming Isabella Paez

The Medley, Fla., native will attempt to qualify for the Olympics and represent Venezuela in Rio in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly. Paez has been a consistent performer for Duke head coach Dan Colella’s squad See OLYMPICS on Page 16

Paez has also competed at NCAAs in the 100yard butterfly as a freshman and sophomore.

Her best time in the 2015-16 campaign in the event was 52.61 seconds—which was secondbest among Blue Devils.

Paez was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and is attempting to qualify for the Olympics even though Venezuela does not have a trials meet. However, the country can select up to two representatives in each event to send to Brazil. Last winter, Paez posted some of the best times of any Venezuelan competitor at the AT&T Winter Nationals, and will wait and see if her efforts were enough to earn an Olympic bid.

Twichell—who graduated in 2011—missed the 2012 Olympic team after finishing 10th in the 800-meter freestyle and 18th in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials, but has an outside chance to qualify this year when she competes in both events once again.

The Fayetteville, N.Y., native captured the 5K and 10K titles at the 2012 Open Water Nationals and added a gold medal in the 5K Team Pursuit and bronze in the 5K at the 2011

FINA World Championships. Twichell added to her celebrated resume as a long-distance swimmer in April, winning the 10K at Open Water National Championships.

In 2011, Twichell set Duke records in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles that still stand today. During her sophomore year, she recorded a first-place finish in each of Duke’s dual and invitational meets. Twichell is still involved with the Blue Devil program as a volunteer assistant coach.

Peter Kropp

One of the most successful breaststroke swimmers in program history, Kropp has qualified to compete in the Olympic trials in both the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke.

As a sophomore in 2014-15, the Los Angeles native set an ACC record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 52.02 seconds. He followed that performance up with a 52.17-second effort at the ACC preliminaries that year—setting a conference meet record—and posted a 52.13 mark against Pittsburgh in October for his best time in the event as a junior.

Kropp also broke Duke’s school record in the 200-yard breaststroke as a sophomore, clocking a 1:55.05 in the conference finals to beat the previous record by more than threequarters of a second. He regressed slightly as a junior, though, posting a season-best time of 1:57.75 that was nearly three seconds slower than his record-breaking swim.

Fee is now a seasoned international competitor, having played with the U.S. every year since graduation. She played her 50th game as a member of the team this February during a test series with Argentina. The Virginia Beach, Va., native was also a part of the team that won the 2015 Pan American gold medal, holding opponents to just one goal in six games.

Lauren Blazing

The Durham native and 2015 first-team All-ACC goalie was named an All-American

three times during her four years starting for the Blue Devils. In the process, she led Duke to national semifinal appearances in 2013 and 2015 while playing alongside her sister Robin, who is a rising senior. Blazing ranks third in program history with 385 career saves and a 1.46 goals against average.

Blazing will look to make the 18-player Olympic roster, having competed with the national team since 2014 and been a part of the U-21 team that finished seventh at the 2012 Junior World Cup. Blazing was a member of the team that won the gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games, and she gained more international experience playing against Canada this February and against Chile in May as a part of a three-game series in Lancaster, Pa.

“Boehme is a veteran player and he knows what we’re doing,” Cutcliffe said. “If Thomas doesn’t get back, God forbid, we’ll be a little light. We’ll only have three scholarship quarterbacks. The problematic part of that is, what are their strengths? How much are you going to run a quarterback?”

In order to compete for an ACC Coastal Division title, the Blue Devils will also have to overcome an arduous schedule that features three pairs of back-to-back road games.

After opening ACC play against Wake Forest in week 2, Duke will travel to

Notre Dame and Northwestern—both of which finished 2015 with 10 wins—for its next two games. The Blue Devils will then have consecutive away meetings against Louisville and Georgia Tech in October before concluding their season at Pittsburgh and Miami.

Cutcliffe said that the Pinstripe Bowl victory has raised the bar for his team— how the Blue Devils answer the offseason questions and handle such expectations remains to be seen.

“We can win,” Cutcliffe said. “I asked Thomas Sirk, ‘Thomas can we win?’ He said, ‘Yes, sir.’ And I said, ‘There’s no question.’ But right now what can’t be answered yet is, ‘Will we win?’”

“We’re not trying to jump ahead. There’s no set timetable or anything like that,” Scheyer said. “Our main thing is to get him back stronger and healthier as fast as possible. In a month, we’ll evaluate it and a month later, then go from there.”

As Giles and Jefferson return to full strength, Krzyzewski and company will have to figure out how to balance one of their deepest teams in recent memory.

Unlike last year, when Allen and Ingram combined for almost 40 points per game and were the primary playmakers, this year’s team will have capable scorers and creators all over the court and coming off the bench.

But just like a season ago, the team’s point guard situation will be a question mark, with Allen, Jackson and Jones all capable of handling the ball but none of them being a traditional point guard.

As he did when Scheyer, special assistant Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler led Duke to its fourth national championship in 2010, Krzyzewski hopes to find the right recipe without a true point guard and evaluate his team’s strategies as players begin to separate themselves.

“There’s chemistry danger on every team, there’s also chemistry opportunity.

three who are better,” Krzyzewski said.

“You have to figure out a system which will engage those guys and build around them. It’s not an equal amount of minutes or anything like that, it’s what you need to do to win.”

Allen will likely be one of the biggest beneficiaries from having prolific scorers around him after shouldering the load for much of last season. The Jacksonville, Fla., native posted the biggest increase in points per game from a freshman to a sophomore season in ACC history a year ago, but will likely be able to showcase more of an all-around game as a junior after deciding not to test the NBA Draft waters.

“Grayson doesn’t need to carry the load [this year]. I think he’d be the first to tell you there were other areas of his game that fell off a little bit because there was such a burden on him to score and create for us [last year],” Scheyer said. “I think you’ll see him be much sharper on the defensive end, on the ball, off the ball, creating for others and a little bit better as a decisionmaker. He had an incredible season last year, but having more help offensively will be a big help for him specifically.”

Sky-high expectations are nothing new for Krzyzewski, who after trying to become the first head coach ever to win three consecutive gold medals will attempt to keep his team in the group of contenders it is often in months before the season tips off.

“Do we believe that we’ll be in there?

We do,” Krzyzewski said. “We believed that last year even after Amile got hurt. That’s what we’re supposed to believe.”

Bellinger led the team with a .336 average during the season, and Labosky took advantage of better pitches to hit with Bellinger behind him in the order during the second half of the year to raise his average to .296.

The tandem also led the team in RBIs— combining for 77—in large part because like Labosky and Bellinger, Herron hit better than .330 after the lineup change and the entire lineup raised its batting average by more than 40 points to create more opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Herron had a remarkable finish to the season after taking over the leadoff spot in the order for good during the Wake Forest series, tying the league lead with 22 doubles and finishing second in the stacked ACC with 24 stolen bases.

“That was the point where we said, ‘Look, let’s get this guy in the leadoff spot, leave him alone and let him go play,’” Pollard said. “There is a peace of mind and a comfort level and continuity when they show up at the ballpark knowing where they’re going to be.”

In 11 straight games from April 12 to April 29, Herron reached base as the first batter of the game for Duke, and he often used speed to get into scoring position right away with a stolen base following a walk or a single. The Blue Devils scored in the first inning of six out of those 11 games, going 7-4 during that stretch, including a 12-5 win against then-No. 1 Miami April 17.

“He puts a lot of pressure on the defense, and therefore, guys like Labosky and

Bellinger get more fastballs to hit, so it’s been a good spot for him,” Pollard said. “Because he’s been in that [leadoff] spot, he’s made the rest of our lineup better.”

Herron belted five doubles in a series win against then-No. 7 Florida State May 13-15 that helped Duke lock up spots in the ACC and NCAA tournaments, a series that also featured the first career home runs for Smiciklas and Zyla.

The other underclassmen in the lineup had their shining moments as well.

Freshman Zack Kone went 5-for-5 to highlight the win against the Hurricanes and played impressive defense all year at shortstop, earning recognition on the AllACC freshman team.

Miller had multiple hits from the No. 9 spot in the order in series-opening wins against then-No. 18 Clemson, the Seminoles and Pittsburgh.

Freshman Chris Proctor batted second down the stretch and rattled off two separate hitting streaks of at least six games, alternating between catcher and designated hitter with junior Cris Perez.

“From a standpoint at the plate, their pitch selection, balance and everything, figuring out ACC pitchers is just incredible,” said graduate student Brian McAfee, a member of Duke’s pitching rotation. “It’s a big jump coming from high school and going right into the ACC, but as the season goes along, I think the record shows how well they’ve adjusted.”

The entire lineup will likely be back next year, and there is reason to believe an NCAA tournament appearance is just the beginning for this group at the end of Pollard’s fourth year.

appearance in his fourth year in Durham with an elite sophomore class featuring Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie and Jay Bilas, with freshman point guard Tommy Amaker setting his teammates up for success like Herron did this year.

That team turned around a program that had suffered two straight losing seasons with a strong second half of the conference schedule, winning eight straight games down the stretch and upsetting then-No. 1 North Carolina in the ACC tournament.

When that team’s core players were all upperclassmen, they made it all the way to the national title game in 1986.

That group of players represented the beginning of a tradition of excellence that has become expected under Krzyzewski, and the next two years will determine whether Labosky, Bellinger and company will be looked upon the same way for Pollard and Duke baseball.

“You’ve got to look at the other side of that, it just gives an opportunity to someone else,” Church said. “It’s like having an injured player sometimes.”

Although Racioppi will not compete with the Blue Devils on the field next season, she is participating in one of their biggest offseason endeavors as she prepares for the U-20 World Cup—a week-long trip to China. Duke left for Beijing last Thursday without its incoming freshmen and six returners due to summer commitments and injuries as part of the events surrounding the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange.

Among those not in Beijing with the Blue Devils are Gibbons and Payne, who have each recently played in four international matches with the U-23 national team, and Quinn, who took the spring semester off for the second straight year to train with the Canadian national team ahead of the Olympics.

But when Duke comes back together as a full unit next fall, the Blue Devils hope to have the same focus on returning to the College Cup final.

“We’re really lucky to have a lot of people coming back. Last year, I thought we had a deep roster but this year I think we’ll have an even deeper roster and everyone knows it’s going to be even more competitive,” Raben said. “The mentality this summer is going to be even more intense because everyone knows they have to come in their absolute best to play.”

It provided a measuring stick at the ACC championship more than a month later when the Blue Devils had closed the gap on the Cavaliers, who still won every race convincingly in Clemson, S.C., en route to their seventh consecutive conference title.

After a two-week break to train and recuperate from the previous races, Duke rebounded from the Virginia loss by tying for first at the Dale England Cup in late April, losing out on the championship because of a tiebreaker.

The Blue Devils won the most races of any team and finally looked like the cohesive unit they were striving to become, to the point that the boats began taking on the

personalities of their respective coaches. “[Rodosky] has been a blast to work with,” said senior captain Lauren Miranda, a member of the 2V8 that finished 13th at NCAAs. “We always make fun of him, he is very sassy. He has a lot of attitude and he tries to push and his philosophy is to kind of have this mentality of, ‘Who cares who you’re up against? You’re going to try and win this race and you’re going to try and be the fastest boat no matter who you’re racing.’ I think that’s very, very true of us.”

Cooke Carcagno worked with the V8, which like the 2V8 outperformed its seeding at the ACC championship and featured two All-ACC performers—seniors Alex Stonehill and Katie Dukovich.

The boat finished 18th at the NCAA championship.

“She has this intensity, this perfectionist mentality that she expects out of the whole team and especially out of our boat, and I know that my boat makes noise,” Stonehill said. “I’ve definitely taken on that intensity and that perfectionist attitude and it’s definitely hard because she expects a lot out of us, but it’s also gotten us to where we are today, so it’s worth it.”

Wilson said she previously worked with several of the team’s boats, but found her niche this year with the V4, which Graham coached.

“It’s been incredible. It’s a joy to row for him,” Wilson said. “I trust him so much, and he has taught us the nuances of the sport in a way that I didn’t see before.”

Cooke Carcagno and Rodosky, who is also the team’s recruiting director, will now turn their attention to bringing in the next freshman class for a program on the rise.

“I think the kids will start to believe us a little more. We talked a big game every time we had a kid in here but they said ‘Yeah, sure, right. We’ll see what you do,’” Cooke Carcagno said. “We were actually able to put our money where our mouth is.”

The catcher and outfielder had a .244 batting average and drove in 13 RBIs in 2015.

Moreno also helped three different teams to top-25 finishes in national tournaments throughout her club career.

“We’ve tried to bring in as many [recruits] as we can with a good chunk of the [scholarship] money now, and each year we’ll phase more into it,” Young said. “Kids want to come here, and with Duke helping so much with financial need, it’s helping quite a bit.”

After signing the program’s first recruiting class, Young had to fill out her coaching staff in the spring.

The former Big Ten Player of the Year did not have to look far for answers, hiring former North Carolina graduate assistant Kate Kantor in February. Kantor was a twotime captain at Georgia Tech and worked with Young when Young was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels.

Not long after adding Kantor, Young

hired another player who earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors during her time at Michigan—Amanda Chidester, who will serve as Duke’s infield and hitting coach.

The two-time All-American honoree and former Team USA member most recently competed in the Japanese Softball League.

“We’re building a culture here at Duke, and getting people who understand the things that I want coming in and know what I want to carry out with Duke softball going forward,” Young said. “Having worked with Kate Kantor at UNC, I knew we were on the same page, and having Amanda Chidester with her caliber—she’s played at the highest level and we both come from Michigan and a great program—we have a shared understanding of culture there as well.”

With players and coaches falling into place, the only thing missing for Duke’s newest team was a place to play.

In February, the Board of Trustees approved a plan to build the softball stadium behind the field hockey stadium on East Campus, and on May 23, the athletic department broke ground on the $8 million project.

The new stadium will feature a team clubhouse, batting cages and an entry plaza, and is expected to be completed

by August 2017.

“We’ve been really involved in meetings for design and picking out all the minor details,” Young said. “Having seen the layout and knowing that [the stadium] is over there with field hockey, I’m hoping that we will be able to get the neighboring community and freshmen involved, captivated, coming out to games and on board with softball.”

CARTA from page 9 reminded her of the greens she grew up putting on in Italy and across Europe.

With Carta feeling more comfortable on the greens, she looked unstoppable at times during the final 36 holes as she started holing long putts—which require good fortune in addition to skill.

“It was her week—that’s just the way it goes,” Brooks said. “There’s an expression that really pertains to her that’s used in golf all the time, and that’s giving good luck a chance. You give good luck a chance by having a positive attitude, by always believing good luck can happen and sustaining that belief. That is the definition of Virginia Elena Carta.”

With her game sharper than it had been all year, the only remaining obstacle for Carta entering the final round was handling the pressure and attention that came with leading the NCAA championship.

Although she was nervous, Carta said her previous experience coming from five shots back to win a tournament in the final round kept her focused on each shot.

“I knew that anyone could play really well or I could play bad—anything could happen the last day,” Carta said.

With several cameras and microphones following her every move, Carta took the drama out of the final day as she did throughout the week, making just one bogey en route to a final-round 69 and the title. The combination of being excited on the golf course while still handling the moment was another display of growth from the freshman.

“She has a lot of passion, and in golf you can get a little bit over-aroused and that can actually hurt your golf.

With respect to her, her tempo will speed up a little bit,” Brooks said. “When her tempo gets a little fast from being too jacked up, that hurts her. This week she did a lot to calm herself down, and still play with passion.”

Now back at Duke, Carta is attending the first summer session before competing in the LPGA Tour’s Marathon

Carta and her teammates are also trying to get over the disappointment of a second straight national semifinal match play loss in the team portion of the NCAA championship—the Blue Devils fell 3-2 to Stanford in the afternoon May 24 after upsetting USC that morning.

But with 2014 National Player of the Year Celine Boutier the only player leaving a team that came one match away from competing for a seventh national title, Duke carries plenty of momentum into the summer.

And its fourth individual NCAA champion is as hungry as anyone for a different team result the next time around.

“We know how to go back next year and be ready to win this championship,” Carta said. “It was a really, really good team learning experience because we talked to each other after the round. We understood where we should have improved and what kind of mistakes we made.”

And then there’s the nightmare scenario that will likely keep coaches up at night for years to come.

If a coach decides to jump the gun and recruit a potential replacement, he leaves open the possibility of a logjam at the position should his early-entrant decide to return to school—a situation that leaves no one happy.

Recruiting promises may be broken and battles for playing time may ensue, creating a discord that could alter team chemistry before the games even begin.

But at the end of the day, the new rules remain a better deal for the players.

Although five-star center Marques Bolden played an extended waiting game with his recruitment to hear the statuses of Kentucky’s big men, the draft process did not seem to impact Bolden’s final decision as he opted for a Duke program that may offer him less playing time and fewer touches as a freshman.

The rule also stands to benefit the college game, with players having more time to weigh the merits of coming back for a chance to contend for a championship.

After finishing 16-17 overall and 5-13 in the ACC a year ago, conventional wisdom would say that N.C. State’s frontcourt duo of BeeJay Anya and Abdul Malik-Abu should have converted their play on a subpar team into a spot in the draft.

But with the lure of joining forces with one of the nation’s top freshman point guards in Dennis Smith Jr., Abu and Anya rolled the dice, electing to return to school while still having the flexibility to enter the draft a year from now.

The day may be coming when, as was the case with last year’s Kentucky team, Duke’s entire roster will decide to enter the draft. If that day comes, it will not be time to panic, but simply a period to anxiously wait and see how the neverending balancing act of the offseason plays out.
