In my two years at Duke and 15 years living in Durham, a lot has remained remarkably similar around Duke athletics.

The Blue Devils are entering the summer with the same men’s basketball head coach for the 37th year in a row, and their director of athletics and head football and women’s basketball coaches have all been in Durham for at least nine years, building tightknit families in their programs.

But this familiar cast of characters has had to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape around them in college sports. Mike Krzyzewski just lost three freshmen to the NBA and is almost sure to be saying goodbye to another one or two one-and-dones next spring. And just a year after an investigation into player mistreatment, Joanne P. McCallie hit the recruiting trail hard and is gearing up for a winter with one of the most talented teams of her career.

Unprecedented numbers of athletes are leaving school to transfer as well and have to fight for the freedom to go wherever they want.

The world of sports is not immune to the technological and social changes sweeping the rest of the country, and Duke has been busy keeping up and trying to stave off unlikely challengers while sticking to its core values. College athletics are becoming more unpredictable than ever, and we’ll do our best to fill you in on all the twists and turns this summer, fall and all year long.

Duke’s lone senior ready to thrive again in off-ball role with Trevon Duval running the point Mitchell Gladstone The Chronicle Eight players, nearly 81 percent of last year’s total minutes played, more than three-quarters of the team’s scoring offense and a trio of top-10 recruits are all gone.

And just three seasons removed from Duke’s fifth national championship, only one player remains.

For all the wrong reasons, Grayson Allen’s name was thrust into the headlines during the Blue Devils’ 2016-17 campaign.

First, it was his trip of Elon’s Steven Santa Ana in late December, followed by a onegame suspension. After Duke was throttled at Virginia Tech on New Year’s Eve with Allen on the sidelines, head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that he had been stripped of his captaincy.

Amidst his off-court woes, nagging toe and ankle injuries slowed the Jacksonville, Fla., native’s growth on the floor after a stellar sophomore campaign. He averaged just 14.5 points in fewer than 30 minutes per game last year—significantly down from his team-best 21.6 points per game in 2015-16.

Now, with an incoming roster that features six freshmen and four returnees who have never averaged more than 10 minutes a night, Allen will

need to reemerge as the Blue Devils’ centerpiece—and most importantly, their sole leader.

“I don’t think [being the only senior is] as much a burden as it is an opportunity,” Krzyzewski said at Duke’s 15th annual K Academy last Wednesday. “Anyone who’s been a leader for us has been a better player, and I think a burden would be if he had all the ball-handling and running of the team.”

At times last season, Allen was the Blue Devils’ primary point guard, and though it was a new role, the 6-foot-5 guard adapted well.

He led the team with 119 assists, and even when he struggled to score, he found ways to impact the game by dishing the ball out to his teammates.

Against then-No. 21 Florida, Allen totaled just six points but set a career high with eight assists, a mark he would top a month later when he racked up 11 against Boston College.

But with Allen, Frank Jackson and Matt Jones splitting ball-handling duties, Duke’s offense never really clicked as a complete unit, and when the Blue Devils ran into the buzzsaw that was South Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tournament, they faltered. A hounding Gamecock defense forced 18 turnovers and sent Duke packing.

This time around, with freshman point

guard Trevon Duval now in the fold, Allen will have the opportunity to return to his more natural role as a sharpshooter and off-ball scorer.

“I don’t know what our offense will be right now,” Krzyzewski said. “I do know that Trevon is going to have the ball and he knows what to do with it.

Will he have it all the time? No, he shouldn’t have it all the time. Will he

have it a lot? Yeah.... Pretty much, I want [Duval] to get the ball.”

Duval, the top point guard in this year’s class, comes to Durham with plenty of accolades. The No. 5 overall prospect in ESPN’s rankings was a McDonald’s AllAmerican and earned a spot on the 2017 USA Junior National Select Team.

Despite turmoil, McCallie lands strong recruiting class Ben Leonard The Chronicle Once a top destination for basketball recruits, Duke seemed to become a destination to steer clear from last spring.

But just a few months later, it returned to being a recruit’s dream.

After a 2015-16 season in which the Blue Devils missed the postseason for the first time in more than 20 years, turmoil appeared to have taken seat in Durham. Leading scorer and rebounder Azurá Stevens transferred to Connecticut and point guard Angela Salvadores returned home to play professionally in Spain, and the turbulent offseason kept snowballing.

Following the departures, the school launched a human resources investigation into head coach Joanne P. McCallie’s program for alleged mistreatment of players and coaches.

But in spite of the distractions, when National Signing Day rolled around in November before their best regular season since 2012-13, the Blue Devils still managed to land the No. 8 recruiting class in the nation, according to ESPN. “We signed an incredible class. That’s what’s kind of humorous,” McCallie said. “Here we were going through some stuff, and it was one of the easiest things we’ve ever done. Because they loved us and Duke for Duke’s sake, and they wouldn’t listen to anybody. Silly Twitter, silly person. They wanted to find out for themselves what was here.”

Headlining McCallie’s haul are forward Jade Williams, ESPN’s No. 14 recruit in this year’s class, and Mikayla Boykin, No. 21 overall and the seventh-best guard in the nation. McCallie didn’t stop there—her 2017 class rounds out with two more solid prospects, four-star post player Madison Treece and a strong scorer in Jayda Adams.

“These particular kids were challenged during that recruitment time and they still made the decision,” McCallie said. “They’re a strong-character, tough-minded group. It’s one of our strongest classes ever, and it’s also very balanced, with two guards and two posts.”

In May, McCallie also added graduate transfer Bego Faz Davalos, who averaged a double-double as a 6-foot-3 center last year at Fresno State, to bring the total to five newcomers on next year’s team.

‘Truth seekers’ The challenges the incoming recruits heard about were certainly palpable—the Durham Herald Sun’s Steve Wiseman reported four-time All-American Elizabeth Williams, who played with the Blue Devils from 20112015, had penned a letter to the administration about a negative atmosphere around the program.

After nearly a month of the investigation and

interviews with former members of the program, though, Kevin White, vice president and director of athletics, said McCallie would keep her post as head coach.

One year later, White declined to discuss any details about the investigation.

“I’m not going to get into that because I will take us back into drama,” White said. “We’re drama-free. Drama at this point is not in the best interest of these kids that are coming back, because they’re beyond that. That’s yesteryear for these kids, and the lion’s share were not part of that yesteryear mentality anyway.”

The turmoil did not seem to faze these recruits, who never decommitted or reopened their recruitment.

“They were pulled to wanting to find out truth,” McCallie said. “They took their five visits, but they liked

Duke more and more, and yet people said you’re at Duke.

They had problems in the spring. They were truth seekers in the most unbelievable way. It was so refreshing.”

A family affair Another common thread that McCallie looked for and got in this class: strong families. As she has done with her own daughter Maddie, who just wrapped up her career at Elon, McCallie said she looks for families who support their daughters but let them be independent, unlike some of the “helicopter” parents of the generation.

Bilas discusses transfer restrictions on Duke’s Sirk Hank Tucker and Mitchell Gladstone The Chronicle Last week, ESPN college basketball analyst and former Blue Devil Jay Bilas criticized Pittsburgh on Twitter for restricting guard Cameron Johnson from transferring to another ACC school. Bilas extended his criticisms to Duke’s treatment of former quarterback Thomas Sirk, who was not allowed to transfer to any team on Duke’s schedule next year and eventually settled on East Carolina.

The Chronicle’s Hank Tucker spoke with Bilas on the phone to go into more detail about how the NCAA and individual schools treat transfer athletes. Their conversation has been condensed for clarity. When Duke’s football program was given an opportunity to respond to some of Bilas’ criticisms and clarify how transfer situations are dealt with, it declined to comment through a team spokesman.

The Chronicle: What was it about Cameron Johnson’s case at Pittsburgh that tipped you and several national writers over the edge and made you feel like you had to voice your opinion?

Jay Bilas: It’s not just that—I’ve been doing this for years. People in this area paid attention to it because it was the ACC and it caught your attention because of it. I have been on this issue for a lot of years and the issue is, really, pretty simple.

The athletes are either employees or they are not. The NCAA and the member

institutions say pretty clearly that athletes are not employees. They say that they are students that just happen to be athletes and they are students that should be treated like any other student.

No other person is restricted in any way in their movement from school to school, and if athletics are truly an extracurricular activity, no other student is told they cannot leave and no prior school has any say in where a student can go next. I think it is profoundly wrong for the NCAA to allow schools to do this and for schools to do it.

The fact that they’re allowed to do it

by NCAA rules doesn’t make it right—it’s profoundly wrong and what a transfer restriction really is, is a non-compete provision that would be in an employment contract. It’s not only tantamount to that, but it is also equal to that and these are unpaid, amateur students according to the NCAA and the University of Pittsburgh. So how Pittsburgh has any say in what Cam Johnson does next is flat-out wrong and similarly, it’s flat-out wrong what Duke did to Thomas Sirk and what Duke does to anyone.

It’s not a question of this school or that school. It’s not a question of whether Pittsburgh has good people or they’re wellintentioned and nice or whether Duke has good people and they treated their players well. It’s a question of policy and this policy is wrong. All of the excuses they use and the rationalizations about, ‘Well, it’s competitive disadvantage,” are nonsense.

What this admits is that the players are assets of the university—as any employee of the university would be an asset. They want to restrict players so that they can control their assets and retain them, and it’s wrong to the point of being immoral.

TC: Do you think it’s more unjustifiable with graduate transfers, like Johnson or Sirk, or do you think rules for undergraduates should be more lenient as well?

JB: The graduate transfer situation adds the additional layer of the player has done everything that the school says is important

to them—that is, graduate. I don’t think it makes a difference. I don’t think a school should have a say in a player leaving and where that player may go. If another school wants a player, then the prior school should have absolutely no say in that.

Now, there are a lot of idiots out there that like to take things to an extreme and say, ‘Well, what do you want? Do you want a player to be able to transfer at halftime to another team?’ That’s wholly stupid and unreasonable—you could say the same See BILAS on Page 16

W. BASKETBALL from page 5 College, helped her develop her game. She said she played one-on-one constantly with her brother at the local gym in Clinton, S.C., where she eventually led Clinton High School to its first state title in nearly 20 years as a senior.

“He’s one of the most elite point guards I’ve ever played against,” Boykin said. “Not a lot of people have been paying attention to him, but he’s better than what people put out. I played against him, and it was like playing one of the players in the NBA Draft.

He pushed me to the next level.”

Like her brother, Boykin figures to play point guard for the Blue Devils next season, and could step in immediately to start with floor general Kyra Lambert likely to miss time after tearing her ACL in the NCAA tournament against Hampton in March.

Lambert said she is on schedule but has no timetable for her return, which could immediately thrust Boykin—who McCallie said still needs to get faster to adjust to the college game—into a big role.

the team in minutes—and perhaps first in minutes spent recruiting prospects like Boykin.

Along with former Duke guard Crystal Primm, who is transferring to Auburn, Lambert dedicates significant time trying to make recruits feel at home while gauging their fit with the team over a meal.

“Kyra has been the biggest recruiter, if I had to pick one,” McCallie said. “She’s a heart-and-soul kid, and she’s done a lot.

She’s a great communicator and does well one-on-one. She’s so committed to the program in a way that a point guard would be. She always has been that recruiter—I’m sure she likes all the meals she gets.”

But McCallie and recruiting coordinator Hernando Planells have done the majority of the work in seeking out new talent, scouring the country—and the world—for those who are drawn to Duke, and not the other way around.

McCallie learned that lesson the hard way with Salvadores’ departure. The 10year Blue Devil head coach worked hard to get the Leon, Spain, native to come to Durham, but she left after just one season after McCallie said she wasn’t always interested academically.

“She was clear about it, she always talked about going pro,” McCallie said. “I tried so hard that we were going to plan to take a trip to Spain, to take the team to Spain. That’s how hard we tried. But I should have learned that you can’t work that hard. There are people that are really attracted to Duke. Those are the people that we should concentrate on.”

Boykin was one of the targets that was naturally drawn to Duke—Lambert said she jokes that Boykin committed to Duke before graduating senior Oderah Chidom did—as was Williams.

The Blue Devils had recruited the 6-foot-4 Williams since she was in eighth grade and beat out teams like Connecticut and Notre Dame for her services. A stretch player who can play on the wing or in the post, the forward was drawn to Duke in large part due to its academics—she plans on following the pre-medicine track to become either an

anesthesiologist or a nurse.

With a void in the frontcourt left by graduating seniors Chidom and Kendall Cooper, Williams could get significant minutes as a freshman for the Blue Devils alongside Davalos next season— if she can build up the strength to complement her speed.

“She can get down the floor, she demands the ball, she’s not afraid to be physical,” McCallie said. “She’s just got to get stronger. If you think about her and Leaonna [Odom] being on the floor at the same time, that’s a fastmoving combination. This team will be unequivocally faster next season.”

And the Blue Devils were not exactly lacking in speed last season—they had star guard Lexie Brown and used their quickness to finish second in the conference in steals. A more up-tempo attack than the offense that revolved around Stevens in 2015-16 gave Duke much better results last season, making the largest jump ever in the ACC standings for a team that finished in the top three, from tied for seventh to tied for second.

A year after finishing 28-6 and making it to the ACC tournament championship game, the Blue Devils will return four of their top five scorers, including Brown and All-ACC guard Rebecca Greenwell. Duke flashed elite potential last season, racking up seven ranked wins, including a victory against then-No. 3 South Carolina, before an upset loss in its only game without Lambert against 10th-seeded Oregon in the NCAA tournament.

With the four freshmen and Davalos joining a proven core, the Blue Devils are well-positioned to contend for a deeper run next year.

“I don’t know that our program could be at a better place, based not only on how our season went, but when I interact with team members over the season, one or two have said to me personally that this is the most fun they’ve ever had,” White said. “The student-athletes are euphoric about where we are, where we’re heading and the kind of season and team chemistry they enjoyed.”

Riding solo By now, Duke fans are familiar with the one-and-done trend that has swept through college basketball.

The Blue Devils lost a trio of freshman— guard Frank Jackson and forwards Jayson Tatum and Harry Giles—to the NBA Draft this offseason, raising Duke’s total to 10 one-and-dones since 2011.

Although the Blue Devils haven’t yet adopted Kentucky’s more media-centric, ESPN 30-for-30producing approach to attracting high school talent, there is no question that Duke has fully leapt into the one-and-done game and there may be no turning back.

But not every top-tier prospect to enter college in the past few years has opted for Duke blue. Big Blue Nation or any other traditional powerhouse.

Ben Simmons—the top pick in the 2016 NBA Draft—spent his freshman year at LSU and served as nothing more than a reminder that the Tigers have a basketball team. Meanwhile, two likely top-10 picks in the upcoming draft in Washington’s Markelle Fultz and N.C. State’s Dennis Smith Jr. spent their lone college years competing for nothing more than potential bids to the NIT. Although college hoops is still nearly four months from tipping off, high school senior Mohamed Bamba’s recent decision to spurn both Duke and Kentucky for Texas has already given Longhorn fans something to cheer about—as long as Bamba can lead the program to more success than fellow top-three prospect Myles Turner did in his underwhelming 2014-15 season in Austin.

North Carolina’s Dean Smith abruptly stepped down at age 66 in 1997, and Bobby Knight retired in the middle of the 2008 season at 68 at Texas Tech.

Krzyzewski has outlasted all of them and is now the third-oldest of the 351 Division I head coaches.

“He doesn’t play golf,” Feinstein said. “If he stops coaching—when he stops coaching— what’s he going to do?”

Even as the college basketball landscape has changed, Krzyzewski’s players say the same thing attracted them to Duke—his honesty.

If other coaches can even get inside the home of a McDonald’s All-American, the coach may promise free reign on the court and an immediate opportunity to showcase their skills to NBA executives as soon as they wish. Not Krzyzewski.

“He didn’t promise me a place in the starting lineup, and he didn’t dangle before me the potential spoils of victory,” former National Player of the Year Shane Battier wrote in a blog post about Krzyzewski in March. “Instead, he promised me only one thing: That every day I would have the opportunity to earn playing time.”

That common thread has kept practices intense for the last 37 years regardless of how many high-school awards and accolades players carry with them onto the court for the first time.

“We’re not taking away the single most fundamental thing for you to get better—hunger,” Krzyzewski said. “If you’re promised, hunger might wane.”

Most of Krzyzewski’s recruits in his first three decades waited their t u r n , learning from junior and senior captains who spent most of the time on the court.

None of Krzyzewski’s players left even a year early for the NBA until 1999, his 19th year at Duke.

The cones were all a ploy. There would be no tiring conditioning workout and agility exercises, just games of dodgeball, capture the flag and relay races.

After losing a game as the defending national champions and the top-ranked team in the nation, playing for Duke was suddenly fun again.

“There’s an inordinate amount of pressure when you’re a Duke basketball player,” Borman said. “To be able to make the practice and make the game fun—his timing is just incredible, when to dial it up and when to dial it back.”

It was not the first time Krzyzewski has toyed with his teams’ emotions. During the 1992 season, another year following a championship, he had the team meet at Wallace Wade Stadium the day after a loss to Wake Forest, where the Blue Devils were expecting to run up and down the steps of the football stadium for the entire practice.

Instead, he gave the team a quick complimentary talk before sending them back to Cameron, where they had cake and ice cream in the film room. The team never had to break a sweat.

“You kind of brace yourself for those days when you know they’re coming, and then it was a complete opposite with the ice cream,” said Hurley, now the head coach at Arizona State. “I remember being surprised that that’s the approach he took, but that’s another way a coach is able to get through to you, by going a different way and always keeping you off-balanced.”

The team loosened up and did not lose again the rest of the season on its way to a second straight national championship.

“You try to make a read. One of the main things you look at is, ‘Are they playing their butts off?’ If they’re playing their butts off, I’m always positive. Always,” Krzyzewski said.

“You’ve got to be close enough to your team to read their facial expressions, their body language, how they are talking to one another.

In other words, watch human beings.”

In today’s one-and-done era, the first thought that comes to mind is that these players are simply using college basketball as a pit stop on the road to their NBA dreams.

It paid off for Simmons, looks increasingly likely for Fultz and Smith and is certainly in play for Bamba and Porter.

As the focal point of their respective teams, each player has or had the opportunity to showcase their skillset and take full control on the court. Without the same level of pressure to win games that comes from playing at the likes of Duke or Kentucky, these prospects can take a season to hone their talents and flash the potential that catches the eye of NBA teams.

of prospects to take on the solo-star role because it hurts college basketball—a product most marketable when traditional powerhouses are competing for titles.

Watching Simmons’ woeful LSU team struggle to play cohesively or chugging coffee to stay up and watch Fultz and Washington get trounced in late-night Pac12 action is not particularly appealing for the casual fan.

For others, the decision to spurn a blueblood is an opportunity to criticize the character of a 17 or 18-year old. To some, it seems that Porter can’t possibly care about winning if he decided to join a Missouri program that has never made a Final Four.

But it’s time for college basketball fans to realize that the solo-star trend will continue and should be embraced as the possible future of the one-and-done movement.

Prospects choose schools based on a number of factors that may not align with what many expect. For Simmons and Porter, family ties played a big factor in their decisions, and Fultz valued Washington because of his personal connection to thenhead coach Lorenzo Romar. In recent years, playing time has become a more important consideration as some programs have built deep rosters through the transfer market.

Although some players may see the allure of competing for a national title under a legendary coach, others may not value it as much, and that should be 100 percent okay. Just because we want to see the best prospects at the best schools doesn’t mean that players should be judged if they have different intentions.

Perhaps the most troubling outcome the solo-star trend has perpetuated is a growing divide between success in the NBA

and college. But with the products already looking very different on the court, this split was inevitable. If you don’t believe me, just consider that National Player of the Year Frank Mason III is a fringe second-round prospect.

At the end of the day, a season of college basketball holds very little value to a promising high school star concerned about his NBA future. It’s hard to say that Simmons, Fultz or Smith turned out definitively better or worse from their year on a college campus.

That’s why more and more players are exploiting loopholes to avoid playing college basketball altogether. Emmanuel Mudiay spurned college to play in China for a year in 2014-15, and Kentucky’s Hamidou Diallo joined the team midseason this spring and tested the draft waters without appearing in a game before ultimately deciding to return to school. Players know they don’t need to play on ESPN every night in college to catch the eyes of scouts.

And maybe that should teach fans to truly appreciate the one-and-dones that still value the college game.

If it wasn’t obvious already, De’Aaron Fox bawling his eyes out after Kentucky’s Elite Eight loss to North Carolina should have made it crystal clear that Lexington was more than a pit stop for him. Some claimed that Jayson Tatum was more concerned with his draft stock than his team early in the regular season, but try making that case after watching the freshman carry Duke to an ACC championship.

Although we don’t like the idea of players prioritizing their NBA dreams while still in school, it’s time to accept it and embrace the entertainment they bring to the table.

With another true freshman in Derryck Thornton controlling the point guard role for the Blue Devils two seasons ago, Allen ranked 15th in the nation in points per game and shot nearly 42 percent from beyond the arc. Allen also starred in the 2015 national championship game as a freshman playing on the wing alongside classmate Tyus Jones.

“I’d like for [Allen] to [run the point] at times, but more for him to be more naturally who he is, and he can score the ball,” Krzyzewski said. “I think he can be one of the leading scorers in the country, and that verve he plays with—I want that showing up even more.”

At the end of last season, Blue Devil fans got to see glimpses of sophomoreyear Grayson Allen. He averaged nearly 16 points per game in the last three contests of Duke’s ACC title run despite coming off the bench playing only about 27 minutes per game.

With former co-captains Amile Jefferson and Jones now graduated, Allen is the lone veteran left, and though a heavy burden will fall on the senior’s shoulders, he will not be alone.

“Everybody has an opportunity to be a leader,” Krzyzewski said. “It shouldn’t be that your best player is just the leader.

Krzyzewski was never one of them, and not just because he is physically incapable of doing anything close to a handstand after undergoing five surgeries in the last year— the back surgery, a knee replacement, two ankle procedures and a hernia surgery.

“He’s always genuine,” Borman said. “A lot of coaches, the way that they try to relate is by bringing themselves down to the age and the immaturity of the kids they’re coaching, and they kind of give off the impression of being buffoons.”

But Krzyzewski still finds a way to reach this generation. The New York Times reported in March that he made his own Bitmoji, a cartoon avatar that resembles him and is captioned by an inspirational saying. Krzyzewski’s has the caption, “You can do it!”

Those popular ESPN commercials on an endless loop last summer that showed his grandsons translating texts he dictated to players into emojis? They might have been a little misleading—he can text players just fine by himself.

“He’s a texting madman,” Feinstein said. “He texts everybody all the time. Those are things that you never would have thought him capable of as recently as five or six years ago.”

Krzyzewski monitors his players on Twitter and Instagram although he does not have public social media accounts, and his interest in modern culture extends beyond technology and social media. He even admitted at the championship celebration two years ago he is a fan of the rapper Meek Mill.

Although Krzyzewski has a comfortable

office on the top floor of the Schwartz-Butters Athletic Center next to Cameron, overlooking Krzyzewskiville—the patch of grass that becomes a tent city of students every winter— he spends more of his time in a separate office tucked away next to his team’s locker room inside the depths of Cameron.

From there, he can listen in on his team and absorb the culture of a group two generations younger than him.

“It’s like a garage office, but it’s locker-room level,” Krzyzewski said. “I hear the music. I like the music. I’ve stayed current. Obviously, I can’t stay current with all the styles because I’d look like an idiot, but some of it I do.”

Krzyzewski and his staff put together highlight videos to pump their team up at a meeting the night before many games, and on April 5, 2015, the night before the Blue Devils beat Wisconsin in the national championship, the soundtrack was Meek Mill’s “Dreams & Nightmares.”

The song is more profane than a Krzyzewski rant—quite an impressive feat— but the inspirational message shines through in snippets.

“It was time to marry the game and I said, ‘Yeah, I do’ If you want it you gotta see it with a cleareyed view.”

Duke won the national championship the next day, making Krzyzewski the secondoldest man ever to coach a team to a title.

And although Krzyzewski has learned to adopt rap and hip hop, his true musical preferences lie with another contemporary artist.

“If you like Beyonce, he’ll be right there with you,” said Andre Dawkins, who played for Krzyzewski from 2009-2014. “One time, he showed us a clip of her singing. I think it was

On a winter day before ACC play started one year, Dawkins remembered Krzyzewski leading his players into Cameron, asking them to look up at the banners in the rafters.

The stadium was empty. Just ahead of them were four big national championship banners behind one basket, flanked by 15 Final Four banners and more ACC tournament banners down the sidelines.

There also were the 13 retired jerseys, remnants of an era of Duke history that has passed. The Blue Devils have not retired a player’s jersey in the last decade, and it is hard to see them doing so again, since none of their best players stay for four years anymore and Krzyzewski requires that a player graduate before his number rises to the rafters.

Every banner during Krzyzewski’s tenure represents a meaningful accomplishment, a time when he has shed his snarl in favor of a smile. When Duke earned its next banner a couple years later, advancing to the 2015 Final Four, his eyes watered as he bear hugged his captain Quinn Cook, his cheeks reddened with joy, flushed outward instead of sharply inward.

This version of Coach K does not emerge in public often, but the desire to see it helps generations of players trust their coach and put their bodies on the line every year.

5,000 MILES Krzyzewski will take his team a long way to show his fondness for his players, even all the way to Alaska.

When Krzyzewski recruits players from a region Duke doesn’t usually visit as part of its regular ACC schedule, he usually tries to plan a nonconference game in their hometown as a token of appreciation.

Duke has played on every coast and even in Hawaii five times for the early-season Maui Invitational, but when Langdon arrived in 1994, it had never ventured north of New England. Once Krzyzewski signed the star guard, though, he entered Duke into the Great Alaska Shootout—an early-season tournament hosted by Alaska-Anchorage—in the 1995-96 season.

The Blue Devils won the tournament and the trip would have been checked off the to-do list, except for one problem— Langdon couldn’t play. He was injured that season, so all his family could do in their shortest trip ever to see him was watch him sit on the bench.

Unbeknownst to Langdon, Alaska would get another chance. Krzyzewski immediately started preparing to go back to the See COACH K on Page 19

Coaches basically have free movement, depending on what their contracts say— practically, coaches leave whenever they want to and the schools don’t do anything about it. They don’t enforce any provision they may have contractually because they don’t want to limit their ability to get another coach and scare another coach away in hiring. But nobody ever says, ‘Do you want a coach to be able to switch at halftime?’ That’s absurd. It’s stupid and it should never even be factored in.

different sports, which indicates that there’s no policy to any of this. There’s no principle involved, so for example, a women’s softball player can transfer and play right away but a football player cannot. It’s stupid and it goes against what the NCAA says it’s all about. I don’t think any of these people who put these transfer restrictions on players can, out the other side of their mouths, even be heard to say ‘student-athlete welfare’ without being laughed at.

TC: Duke let Michael Gbinije transfer to Syracuse a few years ago in men’s basketball when it was on its way into the ACC, and Sean Obi was considering Georgia Tech this spring. Have you ever talked to Coach K about how he handles these situations and do you think it makes him more appealing to the players he recruits?

JB: I’ve not talked to him about it and I would imagine that any player would want to factor something like that in. Usually when people get married, they don’t think about divorce. You’re not thinking—when you accept a scholarship and decide to go play for somebody—what your exit strategy might be if it doesn’t work out. I don’t think it’s a big factor for a player. Usually, they find out later on when they want to leave and that’s when it hits them like a ton of bricks and it’s horribly unfair. It’s horribly wrong.

Just for example, Duke’s nonsensical statement on Thomas Sirk—now, Duke will tell you that their breakup with Thomas Sirk was amicable, that they treated him fairly and all that stuff. That’s fine, and maybe Thomas Sirk is thrilled to death with being at East Carolina. I have no idea and that’s not the point. The point is there was no reason to put any transfer restrictions on him at all.

So Duke is worried about his knowledge of the program for, potentially, one game they may play? One game? An athlete’s going to be restricted as to his future upon one football game? It may not even be one.

They may not even play at all, yet, if Thomas Sirk chose to give up football and take a job at the University of North Carolina as an assistant coach, he could give the entire playbook to North Carolina. He could write a book and detail “The Duke Way” if he wants to. But boy, he can’t go play somewhere else. That’s laughably absurd and it’s an extreme rationalization of an excuse for doing the wrong thing.

Any restriction on a player as to where they go is just wrong—it’s wrong if Duke does it, it’s wrong if Pittsburgh does it, it’s

wrong if UNLV does it, it’s wrong if Harvard does it. It’s just wrong, period, and that’s why I make no distinction that I went to school at Duke. I love Duke, I love the people there, but their restrictions on Thomas Sirk were wrong.

Q & A

TC: Is this something the NCAA can fix with a simple rule change or are these policies coming from coaches, conferences, administrators that each school needs to address individually?

JB: It’s both. Just because it’s allowed— the NCAA rules allow schools to restrict.

They don’t require it, they allow it, and could the NCAA fix this? You’re darn right they could. They could fix it tomorrow, and the silence coming out of Indianapolis on these cases is equally wrong. Mark Emmert and his colleagues should stand up and say, ‘This is wrong.’ They have no problem stepping up and giving their opinion when we talk about pay for players or providing more for a player, and they say they’re not employees.

Why aren’t they standing up and saying now, they’re not employees and this shouldn’t be enforced this way? This is wrong. But given that the NCAA allows this, it doesn’t mean that the schools doing it, it makes it right. It does not make it right.

They tend to rationalize it by saying, ‘Well, See BILAS on Page 19

“It’s something that has to be done a couple years in advance, so he must have done it at some point during my redshirt sophomore year,” said Langdon, now the assistant general manager of the Brooklyn Nets. “That was incredibly special that he thought about that.”

Krzyzewski doesn’t just love his stars.

Ricky Price began his career with great promise when he arrived at Duke in 1994 and peaked as a sophomore, starting almost every game and being named the team’s defensive player of the year at the postseason banquet. But his career fizzled from there.

An academic suspension for plagiarism kept him off the court for the fall of his senior year, and Krzyzewski kept him on the bench most of the time even when he returned to the team. Price

acknowledged he and his head coach “weren’t on great terms” at the end of his senior year before a productive one-on-one meeting that Krzyzewski has with all his players after the season ended.

“We had a big powwow where we were able to iron some things out,” Price said.

Price faded into obscurity after spending his last two years on the end of the bench, disregarded by most of the public. He is the kind of guy a Hall of Fame coach could easily forget.

But Price and Krzyzewski stayed in touch, and it paid off more than 10 years after Price graduated, when he broke his tibia and fibula playing pickup basketball in his hometown of Charlotte on his birthday.

“I called Gerry [Brown], his personal secretary who handles his ticket requests and everything, and she let Coach know that happened,” Price said. “He called immediately and set up an appointment for me to come to Duke and have my surgery....

He didn’t have to do that.”

After Price’s surgery on his broken leg, Krzyzewski checked in on him in the hospital and called to make sure he settled back into Charlotte after he was discharged.

Price remains grateful for Krzyzewski’s care during that time and still talks with him every few months, about his family, about his basketball clinics—he coaches teens through the company he founded, Game Ready Skills and Development—about anything.

“Ricky went through a couple really tough things here as a player, and he didn’t really understand everything as well at that time in his life as he did later,” Krzyzewski said. “I admire the fact that he got it.”

Price was one of about 30 former and current players in Durham this weekend to help coach at the K Academy fantasy camp, an annual example of how many players Krzyzewski still keeps up with regularly. With Krzyzewski sitting in his meeting room, the sound of new basketball shoes squeaking on the floor is audible through the hallway, as middle-aged men live out their dreams in front of Blue Devil legends spanning Krzyzewski’s career. Their former coach and lifelong friend is the one thing that links them together.

As Krzyzewski put it, “It’s like having this incredibly large family.”

TC: Why do you think so many more athletes transfer now than when you were playing 30 years ago?

JB: They transfer for a lot of reasons, but it doesn’t matter why they transfer. If you want your players to stay, treat them better. That’s all there is to it. This is a very simple analysis. Players have the right to transfer.

They transfer, that’s fine. What difference does it make whether they’re not happy there academically or they don’t like their coach or they think they should play more or it wasn’t a good fit or they want to be closer to home or they were unhappy?

Whatever it is, they should be allowed to go wherever they want. They’re not employees. I think they are the equivalent of an employee, but the NCAA says they’re not, and the NCAA cannot have it both ways on this. And when I say the NCAA, I am including the member institutions, which includes Pittsburgh and Duke. They can’t claim they’re not employees and then all of a sudden treat them as if they were, and that’s exactly what this is, and it is nonsense to say or imply, ‘Oh boy, we don’t want to play against these guys, it’s a competitive disadvantage.’

Thomas Sirk left because Daniel Jones is going to be the starter, and absent somebody getting hurt or something, he’s not going to play, and Duke said they supported his transfer 100 percent. Well, clearly they didn’t, because they restricted his transfer, so they didn’t support it 100 percent. That doesn’t mean they didn’t treat him well or they don’t like him or they didn’t want him to stay, but it means he’s not good enough to start there, but he’s too good to play against. This business about him having knowledge of their program, so if he was only there for a short period and didn’t pay attention and didn’t have knowledge, it would be okay for him to transfer anywhere?

And they don’t want to set a precedent?

Well, their basketball coach set a precedent that you can transfer within the conference, so Duke doesn’t have a policy with regard to that. Is it whatever the coach wants? Who’s in charge? I’d like to know who’s in charge, because it’s wrong. It’s wrong when David Cutcliffe does it, it’s wrong when [Pittsburgh men’s basketball head coach] Kevin Stallings does it, it’s wrong if [North Carolina men’s basketball head coach] Roy Williams does it, it’s wrong, period.

TC: What’s made you feel the need throughout your career to be a consistent vocal advocate for studentathletes with paying players, this issue and others that have come up?

JB: I cover college sports for ESPN, and I don’t just cover the product on the floor, I cover the entire landscape of the game. I comment on policy, and when I think a policy is right, I say so, when I think a policy is wrong, I say so. I was not hired to be a cheerleader, I was hired to comment on the important issues in and around the game, and I do that. People may agree or disagree, that’s fine, but I’m consistent, and I think my stance on this issue has been absolutely consistent.
