Melt the butter in a large, deep ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, until the onion is soft and golden. Remove from the heat, add the bread, cornbread, reserved celery leaves, fresh sage, marjoram, salt, dried sage, and pepper, and stir to mix. Add the broth and eggs and stir to combine and moisten the bread. The dressing can be mixed in the same skillet if it is large enough; if not, transfer to a large bowl to mix and return to the skillet to bake. Bake, uncovered, until golden brown on top, 45 minutes to 1 hour. If it begins to brown too quickly, cover with foil and continue to bake. Remove from the oven and serve warm.

Ways to Give Back Looking to give back to the Durham community? Making plans to shop for your holiday gifts? Consider donating or volunteering this year with the following organizations! Salvation Army: Angel Tree and Adopt-A-Family
Durham Rescue Mission: Christmas Toy Give-A-Way
909 Liberty St. Durham, NC (919) 688-7306 ext. 111
1201 E. Main St., Durham, NC (919) 688-9641 www.durhamrescuemission.org
If you’re heading to the mall for some holiday shopping, consider buying a few extra gifts! The Salvation Army provides children and families with Christmas gifts every year that they would not receive without donations from students and residents in the Durham community. The Angel Tree program pairs over 1,700 children ages 0 to 12 with individuals who donate gifts every year. You will be assigned to one child, learn his or her name, age, gender, clothing sizes and “wish gifts,” so you can shop specifically for that child. The Adopt-A-Family program is similar, but instead of adopting one child, you adopt an entire family to purchase gifts for. Price limit is $125. All gift donations must be dropped off by December 6th at the Salvation Army location on Liberty Street. Call Debbie Avolin to get involved. Volunteer Center of Durham: Share Your Christmas 700 W. Main St. Durham, NC (919) 684-9690
For the past 39 years, Share Your Christmas has matched individuals and groups interested in donating new gifts to disadvantaged Durham residents referred by a Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) social worker. The program is coordinated by Durham County DSS and The Volunteer Center. For more information on how you or your group can become involved, please call (919) 684-9690 or email adrienne@thevolunteercenter.org.
Help serve a traditional Christmas meal, give away toys and groceries, or help with games and activities. Email volunteer@DurhamRescueMission.com to get involved. Meals on Wheels: Senior Santa Program 2522 Ross Road, Durham, NC (919) 667-9424 www.mowdurham.org
As joyous as the holiday season may be for some, for others it is the loneliest time of year. It is for this reason that each year, Meals on Wheels of Durham strives to provide each meal recipient with a holiday gift. They have been able to touch each client in this small but very meaningful way for the past three years only with the help of compassionate community members. They ask that you consider a donation of an inexpensive (under $20) item that can be given as a gift to a needy Durham senior. Donated items of any type may be delivered to the Meals on Wheels office between the hours of 8:30a – 3:00p Monday through Friday. See http:// www.mowdurham.org/special-events/ for a list of suggestions. United Way: “Community Reads” Book Drive 2400 Perimeter Park Dr., Morrisville, NC 27560 (919) 460-8687
Help children and adults learn to read. Hold a book drive or donate books from your own shelf. United Way is collecting used and new books for readers of all ages, infant through adult. Books will be distributed to agencies working to increase literacy throughout Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Durham Counties. Donations can be dropped off at the United Way office every Friday from January 23 to February 27, 2015.

Ronald McDonald House-Durham: Wishing Tree 506 Alexander Ave., Durham, NC (919) 281-1064
Since 1980, the Ronald McDonald House of Durham has offered a comforting home away from home and a community of support for seriously ill children and their families. Their programs provide families with the comforts of home –private bedrooms, inviting community spaces, home-cooked meals and a stocked kitchen, a playroom, computer room and laundry facilities – as well as a network of support through interactions with other families, staff and volunteers. Check out their Holiday With List for gift ideas for children staying at the House, stocking stuffers for their parents, as well as ways to help the House or Family Rooms. Holiday Dance Party with Clark Stern & Chuck Cotton
Bluesman Clark Stern has played piano alongside genre notables such as Lurrie Bell, Anson Funderburgh and Billy Boy Arnold, but he’s joined tonight by local drum veteran Chuck Cotton (Bob Margolin’s band). Though Stern and Cotton both sing, the focus is on the simple interplay beneath the two instrumentalists, which really gets cooking once Stern’s piano stand starts shaking from his heavy hands. Expect plenty of boogie-woogie and jump blues when they draw tunes from traditional and gospel repertoires, as well as Stern’s originals. The Blue Note Grill 8pm 919-401-1979

The common ground for their backgrounds is blues but The Luxuriant Sedans is no typical fedora-wearing, licks-off-of-records blues band. Rather, the band’s deep musical versatility takes the blue soul in its music and adds an element of rock ‘n’ roll energy that celebrates taste and individuality. Like its namesake, The Luxuriant Sedans is the prestigious sum of its quality parts. The Blue Note Grill 9pm 919-401-1979
