Duke Dining named best in nation as West Union opens Samantha Neal The Chronicle Duke Dining has received a boost in national ranking as the West Union is slated to open 12 new eateries on campus.

Duke Dining was recently ranked first in a list for best college food by restaurant review website The Daily Meal, rising from ninth place two years ago and fifth last year.

The jump coincides with the reopening of the West Union, which has been closed since July 2013.

“They’ve worked so hard over the past few years to improve the dining program,” said Rick Johnson, associate vice president of student affairs for Housing, Dining and Residence Life. “They’re trying to get better all the time and some of that is being recognized by the rating agencies.”

The building does not contain any typical soda fountains and instead offers flavored water, iced tea and carbonated water. Brian Taylor, Trinity ‘16 and a current master’s student in the Nicholas School of the Environment, said the carbonated water can be customized using flavored syrups—much like an Italian soda.

The decision about sodas reflected the opinions of focus groups, Taylor said.

Groups included Duke Student Government representatives, Duke University Student Dining Advisory Committee members, administrators and other students.

“We elected to focus on healthy dining throughout the building as is reflected by the various menu items and the emphasis on fresh, nutritious and communal,” wrote Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, in an email. “Moving away from fountain beverages

Johnson noted that the inspiration for this fire pit was Jaleo, a tapas restaurant inside The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

There are no similar apparatuses on college campuses, he said.

At Café, the West Union showcases a different type of ice cream, Johnson said. The ice cream is mixed in a container while liquid nitrogen freezes it to be ready in 90 seconds, and the result is creamier than normal ice cream. Johnson explained that the ice cream will be made in front of students using milk, cream, sugar and flavors such as strawberries, peaches or vanilla.

“It’s the same great homemade ice cream because we start with the freshest ingredients,” Johnson said.

The Chef’s Kitchen in the West Union will serve as a teaching kitchen and will host cooking lessons for students, faculty and staff later in the Fall semester. The same area will also have a pop-up restaurant, which will have a rotating theme and a seasonal menu.

The wizard of Wallace Wade Amrith Ramkumar The Chronicle SOUTH BEND, Ind.—The wizard of Wallace Wade has done it again.

Head coach David Cutcliffe and his staff have been maligned by fans and critics the past few weeks as Duke suffered back-to-back double digit losses. And rightfully so.

The Blue Devils committed 10 turnovers in three games, were averaging more than seven penalties per contest and suffered through a series of special teams gaffes. True freshman kicker A.J. Reed missed three field goals inside 45 yards and an extra point, and redshirt freshman punter Austin Parker dropped multiple snaps.

The holder in Duke’s first three games, Parker also took his hands off a snap during the Blue Devils’ second extra point attempt against Wake Forest—Reed still made it, but it was another sign that one of the most disciplined teams in the nation was not itself early in the year.

Yet Duke fans need not have worried.

The man who has resurrected the Blue Devil football program and his staff made a series of adjustments for Saturday’s Notre Dame game that paid off in a big way, culminating in Reed’s 19-yard game-winning field goal to complete a remarkable comeback.

Perhaps the most crucial of those adjustments? Replacing Parker at holder with walk-on Danny Stirt, a backup placekicker and punter who helped Duke’s kicking unit execute five perfect extra points and Reed’s final kick with 1:24 left in the game. “[Stirt] just had a great week to build confidence in A.J.,” Cutcliffe said. “That

unit there—they believe in [Reed], and he’s got a lot of talent, so I knew when he came down there at the end, the field goal, there was no doubt in my mind that he was going to make it.”

Before the true freshman converted his first career field goal, multiple Blue Devil veterans, including redshirt senior Corbin McCarthy, were in Reed’s ear before the pressure situation.

“A few guys came and talked to me. They were all pretty much saying, ‘We got your back, man. We believe in you, we know you’re going to make this,’” Reed said. “Everybody’s really had my back and really believed in me.... It’s paying off right now.”

But if you thought Duke’s personnel changes were limited to Jim Bridge’s special teams unit, think again.

Redshirt junior wide receiver Quay Chambers made the first start of his career Saturday after entering the game with two career receptions, both of which came against N.C. Central in Week 1. The former quarterback appeared to take redshirt sophomore Chris Taylor’s opportunities at the position Saturday and made the most of them.

After the Blue Devils forced a fumble about halfway through the second quarter, Chambers broke free down the right sideline for a quick 25-yard touchdown strike to give Duke its first lead of the game. The play was the Blue Devils’ first passing touchdown in 11 quarters.

Perhaps more importantly, it showed a shift in the mindset of quarterback Daniel Jones and company immediately following a turnover. In Duke’s last two games, the Blue Devils were unable to turn momentum into touchdowns, something they wasted

little time doing against the Fighting Irish.

Chambers finished the game with five catches for 55 yards and the touchdown— one of three wideouts with at least five catches for 50 yards.

“I have all the confidence in the world in Quay and all those guys out there,” Jones said.

“Quay made so many big plays for us and that was good to see for sure.”

Along the offensive line, Duke made strides against Northwestern following a dismal performance against Wake Forest in which the Blue Devils had 37 yards on 30 rushes. After finishing with 117 yards rushing against the Wildcats, Duke cleared the 200-yard mark.

middle, where redshirt sophomore left guard Zach Harmon made his second start Saturday and the Blue Devils were finally able to spring running backs Jela Duncan and Shaun Wilson. “[Power running] was just an adjustment that our [offensive coordinator Zac Roper] made—bringing the tight ends in,” Wilson said. “The running game was hitting all day, honestly. We just stayed to what was true and what was working.”

Faculty, administrators reflect on Nancy Andrews’ tenure Kenrick Cai The Chronicle When Dr. Nancy Andrews, dean of the School of Medicine and vice chancellor for academic affairs, steps down next year, she will leave behind a legacy of open collaboration and strong leadership, her peers said.

Andrews, who became dean in 2007 after working for 14 years in the Harvard Medical School, oversaw the expansion of Duke’s School of Medicine with the construction of the Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans Center for Health Education, along with the establishment of four new academic departments. Her tenure was also marked by efforts to consolidate the medical school, including the formation of the Duke Cancer Institute. In July, Andrews announced her plans to step down from her position in June 2017.

“I have thought for a long time that 10 years is about right for this type of role. The deanship at Duke will be a very attractive job for rising leaders in academic medicine, and I want to give someone else the opportunity to take it on,” Andrews wrote in an email to The Chronicle in July.

The School of Medicine has retained its national reputation as a top tier medical school and research institute under Andrews. It has ranked in the top ten of U.S. News and World Report’s Best Medical Schools each year since her arrival and exceeded $650 million in annual research expenditure last year.

Andrews noted that when she started at Duke, she wanted to focus her efforts on four big challenges—fostering collaboration between the medical school and the other schools of the University, advancing research on a wide range of topics “from molecules to populations,” improving diversity and inclusion and launching innovative educational programs.

She wrote that these projects were not finished, but that they were each at a “good transition point.”

One of her largest focuses has been on opening up the School of Medicine and allowing it to form new interdisciplinary partnerships.

“I thought that this could give Duke a competitive advantage in attracting the best people and solving complex, real world problems,” she wrote.

MEDx—an 2015 initiative involving the School of Medicine and the Pratt School of Engineering—represents one of those interdisciplinary collaborations that has aligned research efforts between the two schools.

Dr. Geoffrey Ginsburg, professor of medicine and biomedical engineering and director of MEDx, noted that Andrews’ idea to encourage conversation between departments is important to the productivity of research.

“The amount of money to invest in creating a forum that allows people to share ideas across disciplines is very small, but the impact can be absolutely huge,” he said.

“For every dollar spent, it’s possible to bring in 10 to 100 times more funding.”

Ginsburg also explained that the modern scientific environment requires collaboration to be successful.

“We know that scientific problems today require much more than a single investigator in their own lab to solve—it has to be done through a team science approach,” he added.

In its first year, MEDx has funded six projects and accelerated research in areas that Duke previously lagged behind in. Duke’s surgical robotics program—although previously not one of the school’s strong suits—is now “lively and vibrant,” Ginsburg said.

During Andrews’ tenure, a number of other programs were established between the School of Medicine and the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.

“What clearly Nancy is seeing here is a campus that’s vibrant in terms of being interdisciplinary with opportunities for innovation, training and research that are being realized,” Ginsburg noted. “I think that with Nancy’s vision, MEDx will really catalyze much faster than it would without it.”

Ravi Bellamkonda, newly appointed dean of the Pratt School of Engineering, was recently named to the search committee that will find Andrews’ replacement. The search committee includes more than 20 of Duke’s leading physicians and researchers.

“Specifically to have the dean of engineering on the search committee for the dean of medicine I think speaks volumes as to the opportunities for MEDx to have this legacy from Nancy,” Ginsburg said.

Perhaps one of Andrews’ most important contributions to the medical school started behind the scenes.

“Moving from an extremely decentralized culture to one with more collaboration across School of Medicine units and the campus, consistency of business practices and accountability of leadership is a process that takes years to accomplish,” wrote Scott Gibson, executive vice dean for administration in the School of Medicine, in an email.

Gibson added that Andrews’ leadership in consolidating the structure of the medical school was successful in part because of recent decisions in infrastructural investments.

Construction for the $235 million Duke Cancer Center was completed in 2012 to house the newly created Duke Cancer Institute.

Other major additions to the campus include the $53 million Trent Semans Center—the medical school’s first education building since 1930, completed in 2013— and a new $103 million medical sciences research building on Research Drive, which is expected to be completed in 2018.

Andrews noted that the addition of infrastructure, faculty members and leaders

has also allowed the medical school to advance its many research goals, including in basic sciences, translation, clinical research and population sciences.

She has recruited “more department chairs and institute directors during the last nine years than at any time in the School’s history,” Gibson wrote.

In her role, Andrews has also spearheaded programs prioritizing diversity, including the establishment of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

“For me, as an underrepresented minority, [her biggest contribution is] fact that she put diversity as a priority,” Corsino said. “She has a vision, especially in diversity and inclusion— she started this before it became a hot topic on the national level.”

Andrews is the only female dean among the top ten ranked medical colleges and the first female dean of the School of Medicine at Duke.

“I believe that the best scientific ideas and the best medical care happen when diversity and inclusion are realized. I can’t say we’re there yet, but I think all of the senior leaders in the School of Medicine recognize that diversity and inclusion are and must continue to be top priorities,” Andrews wrote.

Andrews’ strong leadership over the past nine years has placed the School of Medicine in a good position to see further success in these initiatives and to continue as one of the nation’s best medical schools, faculty and administrators said.

“It goes without saying that the hope is that the next dean will continue to have as strong an interest in this area of innovation that Nancy has had,” Ginsburg said.

Methodist Church’s role in electing Trustees ends this year Adam Beyer The Chronicle Effective this year, none of Duke’s Board of Trustees members will be elected by the Methodist Church.

The North Carolina and Western North Carolina Conferences of the United Methodist Church have together traditionally ratified 24 members of the Board, although only after a majority of the Trustees recommended the candidate. Now, however, any future group of Trustees will be elected without confirmation from either church. Twelve members will continue to be elected by Duke alumni.

Members each serve six-year terms, and no Trustees can serve more than two consecutive terms with renewed eligibility following two years absence.

“The bylaws were changed earlier this year and take effect with the next group of Trustees to be elected to the board,” wrote Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, in an email. “It was done in consultation with the conferences and with the support of the current and immediate past Trustees from the United Methodist Church.”

In two statements, the conferences noted that their leadership had been involved in the decision.

Derek Leek, director of communications for the North Carolina Conference, and Michael Rich, web and communications manager at the Western North Carolina Conference, noted the University and churches will still interact.

“We continue to share and cherish our Methodist connection with Duke University in this time in more appropriate and mutually helpful ways,” Leek wrote in a statement.

Schoenfeld noted that although the

Trustees’ charter gave the Conferences electoral power, in reality the churches just ratified the Trustees’ own nominations. No one can join the Board without the Trustees’ approval of the candidates first, he said.

The shift will not change much about the University, Schoenfeld explained, noting that Duke retains its “historic relationship” with the Methodist Church. Funding from the Divinity School will still be provided by the two conferences.

Charles Clotfelter, Z. Smith Reynolds professor of public policy studies, echoed that idea. He explained that many elite universities are moving away from their religious affiliations.

“It’s a trend that has been happening over time, and it’s most visible in the nonprofit colleges, the ones that are name-brand prestigious and nationally,” Clotfelter said.

Before it become Duke University, Trinity College and its precursor institutions were influenced by an informal, primarily-Methodist leadership, according to a history written

by University Archivist Valerie Gillispie. The College’s 1891 charter was the first to specify that 24 Trustees must come from the two church conferences.

However, Duke’s former charter did not mandate the Trustees to be affiliated with the church—just ratified by it, Gillispie wrote.

Former Duke President John Kilgo later worked in 1903 to change the process so that the Trustees all had to be recommended by a majority vote of the Board’s current members before approval by the two conferences.

This practice reduced the influence of the Methodist Church on the school, Gillispie wrote in her summary.

In North Carolina, Davidson College and Wake Forest University used to be much closer to the Presbyterian and Baptist churches, respectively, Clotfelter explained. That changed during the past several decades as the colleges sought more autonomy.

Clotfelter said he did not think the University moved away from the Methodist Church for legal reasons, although other colleges have faced legal hurdles due to their religious affiliations.

For example, Davidson was the center of a 2011 lawsuit about whether the college’s use of a police force violated the First Amendment’s separation of church and state. The lawsuit alleged that, because of Davidson’s religious affiliation, the police force was not legally permissible. However, the North Carolina Supreme Court found that state law permitted the college to maintain a police force.

At least a quarter of Davidson’s trustees are required to be members or affiliates of the Presbyterian Church.

Although Clotfelter noted that he believes the decision fits into a society that is increasingly secular or non-denominational, he also said not to discount the continuing role of the religion on colleges.

“The fact that that these things are officially coming to an end should not make anyone blind to fact that religion will still be important,” he said.

Duke looks to expand resources through arts , health centers Bre Bradham The Chronicle With three construction projects on campus wrapping up in the coming year, students will gain access to an array of new resources and creative facilities.

The Student Health and Wellness Center is projected to open in January 2017, the Science Drive Parking Garage the same month and the Arts Center by October 2017. Sue Wasiolek, associate vice president for student affairs, said students currently frustrated about construction now will soon have access to its benefits.

“At least two of those projects, the Arts Building and the Health and Wellness Building, will have a very direct impact on students, students’ lives and student services,” she said.

“I think that everyone understands that with progress it is not unusual to have a level of inconvenience that goes along with it.”

Wasiolek noted that student resources will be better integrated with the completion of the Student Health and Wellness Building because a variety of related resources—from Counseling and Psychological Services to a pharmacy—will be consolidated. She added that this intended to simplify how students pursue healthcare and encourage a more proactive approach to wellness.

To provide a holistic wellness experience, Student Affairs will also include a garden in the back of the building, Wasiolek said. This will be completed by February 2017.

Students said they hope the new facility will be more convenient.

“The only time I ever went to Student Health was when I had a cold, and that was really difficult to find,” said sophomore

Maddie Nelson. “So if it is all in one place, that will be better.”

Similarly, the Arts Center will provide a centralized hub for the arts community once completed, said Scott Lindroth, vice provost of the arts.

Following the closure of parts of Campus Drive during the summer, construction of the new arts building has ramped up in recent months. Lindroth said he hopes the building will positively impact the artistic life on campus next year.

“This is really meant to be open to all students on campus, regardless of their commitment to the arts. There will be plenty of social spaces,” he said. “There will be wonderful venues to witness the arts, either in the black box theater or the film theater.”

The new building will include drawing and dance studios, a coffee shop with a stage for use by student groups and many other resources for creating and appreciating the arts.

The facility is expected to begin hosting non-curricular activities in Fall 2017, but the official opening for classes will not occur until January 2018, Lindroth explained.

Initially expected to be completed by August 2017, the project was pushed back due to weather.

“The winter weather pushed the project back a few months,” wrote Ray Walker, staff architect and project manager, in an email.

Recent work on the building has included steel being erected, while panels are in the process of being installed, Walker noted. The next step for the Arts Building is having a curtain wall installed.

Lindroth explained that art departments will capitalize on their new space by expanding the artistic opportunities offered under DukeCreate, which launched in 2015. The

program offers workshops in various areas of the arts during the academic year and will include a “visiting artist-in-residence” program.

“We will work closely with the Nasher and Duke Performances, our two major presenting organizations, and develop residency programs that will bring artists to campus for longer periods of time,” Lindroth said.

Having artists in residence visit three to four times a year will facilitate their incorporation into the curriculum, Lindroth noted.

Across West Campus on Science Drive, a new parking garage looks to add 2,265 new spots for students, faculty, staff and eventgoers, noted Steve Carrow, a project manager with Duke Facilities Management. The facility is set to open in January 2017 and will do

more than just house cars, Carrow added.

“The plaza area between Science Drive and the deck entrance is set up to be used for tailgates,” he wrote in an email.

The new structure will also house the Parking and Transportation Office.

Recent progress on this project resulted in the reopening of Science Drive and two new bus stops in August. The next step for the project is completion of landscaping, paint striping and adding a turn lane to North Carolina Highway 751. Carrow noted that the goal of the project is to remedy a lack of parking on West Campus.

HOOS RIDING HIGH AFTER FIRST WIN Sam Turken The Chronicle Duke is not the only ACC Coastal Division squad that overcame early-season adversity with a much-needed victory last weekend.

After starting its 2016 campaign 0-3 with disappointing losses to Richmond and Connecticut, Virginia exploded for 21 fourth-quarter points in a gritty 49-35 win against Central Michigan—which upset thenNo. 22 Oklahoma State early in the season— Saturday at home.

Now, led by first-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall, the Cavaliers hope to continue their momentum and knock off the Blue Devils for the second straight year Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium. Virginia beat Duke 42-34 last season.

“I’m excited about the progress we’re making. I’m excited about the [Central Michigan] win,” Mendenhall said at his weekly press conference Monday. “But you’ll find with me, this is a fairly consistent approach.... Now it’s right back to the things that we need to continue to work on and to improve.”

Throughout the offseason and its first four games, Virginia has made several adjustments.

Mendenhall—who previously coached at BYU for 11 years—introduced a new up-tempo offense and a 3-4 defensive scheme.

Mendenhall and his staff have also replaced 2015 starting quarterback Matt Johns with East Carolina transfer Kurt Benkert, and Virginia’s receiving corps is adjusting to life without last year’s leading wideout, Canaan Severin.

the Cavaliers displayed their inexperience playing with Benkert in the new spread offense. During double-digit losses to Richmond and Oregon, Benkert showed little chemistry with his receivers, as Virginia rarely converted passes downfield and struggled with Mendenhall’s quick pace.

But on Saturday against the Chippewas, the Cavalier offense finally found its stride, recording a season-high 569 total yards. The offensive line—which was suspect against Oregon—did not give up any sacks, allowing Benkert to finish 27-of-43 for 421 yards and five touchdowns.

“Really impressed after analyzing the game and going through it [by] Kurt Benkert’s performance, the delivery, the timing of the delivery, the accuracy, the decision-making and the consistency,” Mendenhall said. “He was exceptional.”

On the outside, wide receivers Olamide Zaccheaus and Doni Dowling combined for 239 receiving yards and senior running back Taquan Mizzell added 168 total yards.

In Virginia’s win against the Blue Devils last season, Mizzell—a third-team All-ACC honoree—contributed three touchdowns and more than 100 all-purpose yards.

“Virginia looked really good last week against a really talented Central Michigan team,” Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said at his weekly press conference Tuesday. “You can visibly see them improving as they become more comfortable with the way things are done with a new coaching staff.”

The Cavaliers’ run defense made strides this week, holding an opponent to fewer than 100 yards rushing for the first time this season against the Chippewas. Even with the imporvement, Virginia is still allowing 176 rushing yards per game and will have its work cut out to slow down Blue Devil running backs Shaun Wilson and Jela Duncan.

“Defensively it was also the best we had performed for the longest amount of time,” Mendenhall said. “The number of big plays against us is continuing to go down.”

Virginia has several key cogs in its front seven. Junior linebacker Micah Kiser leads the squad with 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks, and junior defensive end Andrew Brown and middle linebacker Zac Bradshaw have combined for 8.5 tackles for loss.

First-team All-ACC safety Quin Blanding— who is second on the team in tackles—also routinely comes up to the line of scrimmage to disrupt plays.

Even with Blanding, the Cavaliers have been vulnerable on the back end of their defense, giving up 306 passing yards per game. After surrendering 331 through the air against Oregon, Virginia’s secondary allowed Central Michigan to throw for another 402 yards.

‘Working on the ground’: Students get involved in campaigns Isabelle Doan The Chronicle With the presidential election only two months away, political activity on campus is heating up.

Duke for Hillary, a subgroup of Duke Democrats, has big plans for campaigning on campus, including photo events, social media campaigns and a blog for students to write about their support for Hillary, said co-founder Amy Wang, a junior. Meanwhile, Duke College Republicans has been laying low in the presidential election, after “abstaining” from supporting Trump a few weeks ago. Senior Adam Lemon, former chair of DCR and current member of its board, noted that the organization has still been active in supporting Governor Pat McCrory and Senator Richard Burr by going

door-to-door and volunteering at phone banks. Still, both organizations are focusing on voter registration, given the large number of potential voters at Duke that can be harnessed.

“The group that has the most power to win over whatever they want is going to be the millennials—the group that isn’t as vocal,” Wang said.

In an August poll, FiveThirtyEight reported that among 18 to 29-year-olds, Clinton led Trump 38 percent to 27 percent.

John Aldrich, Pfizer-Pratt University professor of political science, noted that many attributes characterizing students are valuable when it comes to political campaigns.

“They’re overqualified, they have more free time than most people and they’re usually socially engaged and usually engaging. So they’re a perfect set of people if you can mobilize them,” he said.

Wang said she feels political campaigns are very different on college campuses because they take the mentality of engaging voters further than they do with the general public.

Sophomore Steve Hassey—a vice president for Duke Democrats—has worked for several campaigns before, but noted that in contrast to his previous experiences, Duke Democrats is more focused on phone banking and volunteer opportunities.

He explained that while those activities could feel slightly more mundane than working at a campaign office, the grassroots efforts on campus still have their benefits.

McCartney found that a number of Duke students, including himself, were disenfranchised as a result of the law. His vote was ultimately not counted after he had registered to vote with a P.O. Box on West Campus while living on East Campus.

“This was a moment when I really stepped back for a second to think about the effects of voter laws throughout the country,” he wrote. “If Duke students, who had every resource and opportunity— and a disproportionate interest in politics compared to the general electorate—were left unable to vote because of a new law, how in the world were low-income citizens with full-time jobs expected to be on top of nuanced changes in electoral law?”

McCartney added that he decided to work for Clinton’s campaign in order to make sure voters’ voices were heard.

Duke HDRL to implement new electronic entry system Ketan Gupta The Chronicle Students may no longer have to worry about being locked out of their dorms, thanks to a new initiative from Housing, Dining and Residence Life.

Over the summer, a new entry system was installed in all of the dorms on East Campus that allows students to enter by simply tapping their DukeCard to the card reader. Residents in Giles are also testing out electronic locks on room doors that are opened using waterproof electronic bracelets with chips embedded, replacing a traditional key. Giles freshmen said that they enjoy the new way of opening their rooms.

“I like them a lot, as opposed to using keys,” freshman Kaelah Brauher said. “A lot of my friends, when they go to their rooms, have to wrestle around to find their keys, but for us it’s really easy and convenient.”

Freshman Nicole Ross noted that she is excited for the system to be implemented in other buildings.

“I use my wristband to get in everywhere, I barely have to take my

key out unless it’s to get into a gym or anything,” Ross said. “I think they should implement this system in every single dorm because it’s extremely useful and just amazing.”

However, some students said that there was confusion on move-in day about how to use the electronic cards and bracelets.

“I think when we first got them, they were kind of a nuisance because we weren’t really sure how to use them, and it took like ten minutes to get into my actual room,” freshman Mackenzie DeLoatch said. “But now, it’s like I don’t even have to think about it, and it’s super easy and convenient.”

Rick Johnson, associate vice president of student affairs for Housing, Dining and Residence Life, explained that all of the dorms on campus will eventually have these features.

“At this point, the University has no way to lock down or control entry into University buildings,” he said. “If there was a safety issue, the University could not centrally lock doors, which is a problem.”

He noted that many other college campuses have systems in which locking doors is controlled centrally.

Although the timeline for the project’s

completion is undetermined, Johnson said that HDRL will install the technology in any residence halls that are being renovated or built. This includes the new dorm on East Campus—which will be built close to Bell Tower residence hall and will be completed by January 2018—as well as Crowell and Craven residence halls, which are in line to be updated.

The new system also makes Giles safer because doors automatically lock when closed, Johnson explained. Even if students are only leaving their rooms to take a shower, their belongings are safe.

The feedback from freshmen about the bracelets has been overwhelmingly positive, Johnson said. He noted that because of the new technology, very few students have been locked out of their rooms.

“It seems, from a technology standpoint, that the key systems were outdated, and the University wants to move toward a comprehensive solution all over campus,” he said. “Not only outside of every building on campus, but it made a lot of sense to take that same technology and move it inside Jeremy Chen | The Chronicle residence halls.”

Duke donors set record in donations for fourth straight year Staff Reports The Chronicle Duke donors have set a new record, giving $571 million in gifts and pledges to the University during the 2015-16 fiscal year.

This is the fourth consecutive year the donations record has been broken.

According to a Duke Today release, the University received $506 million in cash this year—a 5.85 percent increase from the $478 million in the 2014-15 fiscal year.

Among the largest donations in the past year were a $25.5 million award from the Marcus Foundation to Duke Health for stem cell research in the treatment of autism, stroke and cerebral palsy, as well as a $16.5 million donation from Duke medical school alum Dr. Robert Margolis and his wife Lisa for the establishment of a new health policy center to develop ideas for healthcare reform.

In addition, the Duke Annual Fund— which supports faculty, financial aid and fellowships as well as educational programs at the University—also set a new record in donations with more than $37.5 million received this year.

“Thanks to our generous alumni and friends, Duke can empower our faculty and students to create solutions to the most difficult challenges in the world,” said President Richard Brodhead in the release. “We’re grateful for the loyalty to Duke that inspires so many alumni and friends to want to sustain and enrich the Duke experience for the future—and to ensure that we welcome the most talented and promising students, regardless of their financial circumstances.”

Of the donations, $180.4 million was will support research, $83.9 million went to financial aid, $71.1 million went to “hallmark” programs like DukeEngage and Bass Connections, $47 million went to faculty support and $41.1 million went to campus transformation projects, according to the release.

This July, Duke Forward—the University’s largest fundraising campaign to date that set aside different goals for each of Duke’s 10 schools, athletics, the

libraries and “University-wide priorities”— reached its $3.25 billion goal almost a year early. In an email sent to donors and Duke staff at the time, Robert Shepard, vice president of alumni affairs and development, noted that the campaign had raised more than $390 million toward financial aid and established 77 new endowed professorships.

Despite reaching its goal early, Duke Forward will continue fundraising as scheduled until June 30, 2017.

Brodhead told The Chronicle that the funds given to the University reflect people’s commitment to Duke.

“I’ve been on the road doing Duke Forward events for the last few years,” he wrote in an email. “In city after city, the audiences have been huge, by far the biggest we have ever seen. It’s palpable how much people love this University and how excited they are by its continuing progress. The dollars are an index to how much people believe in this place.”

Taylor said that there will not be any cuts to the Merchants-on-Points lineup, but the hours of operation will be scaled back so that they will primarily be a late-night option. Any further changes to MOPs will be decided by student demand, he noted.

“I would anticipate that at the end of this year going into next year there will probably be a large change to the lineup because some MOPs or some food trucks might not have nearly as much demand,” Taylor said. “Because there is something in the West Union that fills that niche, there’s no reason to have a food truck that offers the same cuisine as something that’s open in the West Union seven days a week.”

Food trucks will no longer operate in the Chapel circle. Instead, one will be stationed in the Kilgo lot and another will be located on Swift Avenue, wrote Robert Coffey— director of dining services—in an email.

This year’s food truck schedule is still being finalized, he added.
