If you’re heading to the mall for some holiday shopping, consider buying a few extra gifts! The Salvation Army provides children and families with Christmas gifts every year that they would not receive without donations from students and residents in the Durham community.

The Angel Tree program pairs over 1,700 children ages 0 to 12 with individuals who donate gifts every year. You will be assigned to one child, learn his or her name, age, gender, clothing sizes and “wish gifts,” so you can shop specifically for that child.

The Adopt-A-Family program is similar, but instead of adopting one child, you adopt an entire family to purchase gifts for. Price limit is $125.

All gift donations must be dropped off by December 6th at the Salvation Army location on Liberty Street. Call Debbie Avolin to get involved.

Volunteer Center of Durham: Share Your Christmas 700 W. Main St. Durham, NC (919) 684-9690

For the past 39 years, Share Your Christmas has matched individuals and groups interested in donating new gifts to disadvantaged Durham residents referred by a Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) social worker. The program is coordinated by Durham County DSS and The Volunteer Center.

As joyous as the holiday season may be for some, for others it is the loneliest time of year. It is for this reason that each year, Meals on Wheels of Durham strives to provide each meal recipient with a holiday gift. They have been able to touch each client in this small but very meaningful way for the past three years only with the help of compassionate community members. They ask that you consider a donation of an inexpensive (under $20) item that can be given as a gift to a needy Durham senior.

Donated items of any type may be delivered to the Meals on Wheels office between the hours of 8:30a – 3:00p Monday through Friday. See http:// www.mowdurham.org/special-events/ for a list of suggestions.

United Way is collecting used and new books for readers of all ages, infant through adult. Books will be distributed to agencies working to increase literacy throughout Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Durham Counties. Donations can be dropped off at the United Way office every Friday from January 23 to February 27, 2015.

Bluesman Clark Stern has played piano alongside genre notables such as Lurrie Bell, Anson Funderburgh and Billy Boy Arnold, but he’s joined tonight by local drum veteran Chuck Cotton (Bob Margolin’s band). Though Stern and Cotton both sing, the focus is on the simple interplay beneath the two instrumentalists, which really gets cooking once Stern’s piano stand starts shaking from his heavy hands. Holiday Greenery

Make your own fragrant holiday display and bring nature indoors. Beth Hall and Michelle Rawlins will each create several evergreen swags or mantelpieces to demonstrate tips and techniques for turning greenery, colorful stems, berries and pods into scented holiday displays for your home.

Theatre In The Park’s original musical comedy adaptation of A Christmas Carol, based on the book by Charles Dickens and adapted for the stage by Ira David Wood III, now in its 41st year, has been cited as “one of the most successful shows in North Carolina theatre history” and voted one of “the top 20 events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society.

In 2010 it was voted best in the Triangle by readers of Triangle Arts and Entertainment. A Christmas Carol has become a holiday tradition in the Southeast, and has also enjoyed critically acclaimed tours to England and France. A Christmas Carol was the first full scale theatrical event staged at DPAC during its opening week in December of 2008. Approximately 30,000 people attend the local production runs in Raleigh and Durham each year.
