Ways to Give Back Looking to give back to the Durham community? Making plans to shop for your holiday gifts? Consider donating or volunteering this year with the following organizations!

If you’re heading to the mall for some holiday shopping, consider buying a few extra gifts! The Salvation Army provides children and families with Christmas gifts every year that they would not receive without donations from students and residents in the Durham community.

The Angel Tree program pairs over 1,100 children ages 0 to 12 with individuals who donate gifts every year. You will be assigned to one child, learn his or her name, age, gender, clothing sizes and “wish gifts,” so you can shop specifically for that child.

The Adopt-A-Family program is similar, but instead of adopting one child, you adopt an entire family to purchase gifts for. Price limit is $125.

All gift donations must be dropped off by December 12th at the Salvation Army location on Liberty Street.

It is for this reason that each year, Meals on Wheels of Durham strives to provide each meal recipient with a holiday gift. They have been able to touch each client in this small but very meaningful way for the past three years only with the help of compassionate community members. They ask that you consider a donation of an inexpensive (under $20) item that can be given as a gift to a needy Durham senior.

United Way is collecting used and new books for readers of all ages, infant through adult. Books will be distributed to agencies working to increase literacy throughout Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Durham Counties. Donations can be dropped off at the United Way office every Friday from January 23 to February 27, 2015.

Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of singer, multi-

instrumentalist, and songwriter K Ishibashi. Born in Seattle, Washington, but growing up predominantly on the east coast, Ishibashi has recorded with and toured internationally as a violinist with such diverse artists such as Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and most recently, the Athens, Georgia based indie rock group of Montreal, of which he is currently a member.

Professor Jody McAuliffe directs this play which she also adapted from the Joseph Conrad novel, The Secret Agent. In McAuliffe’s play, when Ted Kaczynski, aka The Unabomber, reads Conrad’s The Secret Agent, the fictional world of the novel enters real American life. Kaczynski’s Montana cabin doubles as the London of 1886, as Conrad’s “simple tale” about an anarchist plot to blow up the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, unfolds in these United States. Conrad: “An explosion is the most lasting thing in the universe.”

William Tyler - ‘Corduroy Roads’

Duke Performances has commissioned the exceptional solo guitarist William Tyler - who occupies the musical intersection of John Fahey and Bill Frisell - to make a new performance that reflects on the lingering legacy of the Civil War. In the piece, Corduroy Roads, Tyler creates a soundtrack to accompany extraordinary photographs of the Civil War taken by George Barnard and Alexander Gardner, 150-year-old artifacts that have recently been acquired by Duke University Libraries. Tyler’s piece offers a contemporary narrative on the distant past, as Barnard and Gardner’s photographs are joined with images of the South through the Great Depression and into the present day.

Jolly Old Saint Nick officially returns to Durham’s Northgate Mall to host Northgate’s free tree lighting festivities Friday, November 21 from 6:00-9:00pm outdoors on The Plaza, 1058 West Club Boulevard, Durham. Duke Performances has commissioned the exceptional solo guitarist William Tyler - who occupies the musical intersection of John Fahey and Bill Frisell - to make a new performance that reflects on the lingering legacy of the Civil War. In the piece, Corduroy Roads, Tyler creates a soundtrack to accompany extraordinary photographs of the Civil War taken by George Barnard and Alexander Gardner, 150-year-old artifacts that have recently been acquired by Duke University Libraries. Tyler’s piece offers a contemporary narrative on the distant past, as Barnard and Gardner’s photographs are joined with images of the South through the Great Depression and into the present day.
