DSIG DROPS NEW MEMBER Decision comes after sexual assault allegations emerge By Likhitha Butchireddygari Editor-in-Chief
Courtesy of Duke Photography Just hours after leaders of Delta Sigma Phi were made aware of a new member’s sexual misconduct, the fraternity dropped him.
“We hope you trust us to handle this in the most holistic and fair way possible,” asked members of Duke’s chapter of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity in an email to other students Jan. 25. The email was referring to an informal sexual misconduct allegation against a new member of the fraternity. The new member has since been dropped by DSig and all Interfraternity Council organizations, wrote IFC President James Bradford, a senior, in an email. “We apologize for the potential of an event at which you would not feel comfortable, that is never a circumstance we would create intentionally and we appreciate that you brought it up before it was realized,” the email noted. “We have a zerotolerance policy with these kinds of actions and we fully intend to maintain that policy with this situation.” The senders of the email also said that “other people and organizations” knew about circumstances related to sexual misconduct before they did, and that the rush process was “imperfect” and “does not always facilitate information like this” to get to them as soon as they would like. According to a statement from DSig’s executive board, they were made aware of the incident Jan. 25 and “took immediate action to determine the facts by speaking with individuals who witnessed the event that occurred.” “No person should ever have to experience unwanted

K-Ville put on grace through Monday Staff Reports The Chronicle
The tent village outside Cameron Indoor Stadium will be empty until further notice, a little more than a month before Duke takes on North Carolina at home. All tenters in Krzyzewskiville received an indefinite grace period beginning at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night due to the high numbers of student illness and the severity of the flu this year. Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, asked the line monitors to give all tenters grace, co-head line monitors David Duquette and Sara Constand wrote in an email to the Krzyzewskiville Listserv Wednesday night. Duquette and Constand wrote in an email to The Chronicle Thursday afternoon that Moneta extended the grace period through at least Monday morning after meeting with them. There are 70 tent groups currently tenting in Krzyzewskiville, and they are now in the blue tenting period, with one person in each group of

For doctors, increase in non-English speaking patients has led to challenges, new solutions
Staff Reports
Imagine you’re sick. Not a stretch, considering the severity of flu season at Duke has shut K-Ville down for students at least until Monday. Now, imagine you’re sick, and can’t understand what your doctor is saying. You don’t speak English, and the doctor doesn’t speak your language. This situation is more common than you might think. It is one that doctors in the Duke medical system have encountered increasingly often as Durham’s population of immigrants—especially Hispanic immigrants—has shot up in the past two decades. In response, Duke Health has implemented and expanded translation programs to accommodate patients whose first language is anything
