Duke endowment dips but experts are not worried Rick Mortenson The Chronicle Although GPAs may have gone through the ringer this semester, students may take solace in the fact that the Duke endowment has experienced some of its own tribulations recently as well, posting a 2.6 percent loss on its investments during the 2016 fiscal year.

Overseen by DUMAC, Inc.—the professional organization that manages the University’s investments, including employees’ retirement pool and its health system’s investments—the endowment’s value was $4.4 billion in 2009, $7.3 billion in 2015 and $6.8 billion in the fiscal year that ended this June. Although the recent drop may seem insignificant compared to gains during the past several years, it was the largest decrease since the 2008 financial crisis and represented a net loss of $500 million, an approximately seven percent decrease in the endowment’s value.

Despite this news, John Burness, visiting professor of the practice in the Sanford School of Public Policy and former senior vice president for public affairs and government relations, said that he does not think people need to be worried.

“It’s serious on one level because you always want to be positive, and it means we’re paying out a little over four percent,” Burness said. “But I don’t think that people should overreact to it at all; it’s one year. We have had really quite a remarkable record of positive years and this is one of the things that happens with investing in the market.”

Burness added that this loss was small compared to the financial crisis in 2008.

“This is not like 2008 where the University had to find a hundred million dollars,” he said.

Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, said he anticipates little impact for students and faculty as a result of this loss, citing DUMAC’s long-term outlook.

“In 2009, during the financial crisis, the value of the Duke University endowment declined by 25 percent, but because we used an average [disbursement amount from the endowment] over the previous three years—rather than annually—the difference from year to year of what was going to impact student life was significant, but not catastrophic,” Schoenfeld said.

Duke was not the only University whose endowment experienced a loss, as more than 430 endowments reported an average of 2.7 percent loss in the 2016 fiscal year. Strikingly, the value of Harvard’s endowment dropped $2 billion during the same time period and its former endowment chief stepped down in July.

Financial experts cited several reasons why the funds may be going through tough times.

“Part of the difference in why the endowment has incurred a loss—whereas if you look at the S&P 500 there would have been a slight gain—is because endowments are longer-term investors. Not only can they take on more risk, but they can invest in different

asset classes,” said Elisabeth de Fontenay, an associate professor of law who specializes in corporate law and finance. “All of these things have a different risk profile than just stocks of publicly traded companies.”

Charles Clotfelter, Z. Smith Reynolds professor of public policy studies, expressed a similar sentiment, noting that endowments of major institutions often feature similar variations year to year.

“If they start putting ramen soup in the new dining hall on West Campus, then the students need to start worrying,” he added jokingly.

New initiative to help professors Virtual reality room allows overcome subconscious biases students to escape real world Katelyn Vlastaris The Chronicle In an effort to help professors confront issues of bias in their classrooms, the University is implementing a new “Teaching for Equity Fellows” initiative.

Developed by the Human Rights Center in the Franklin Humanities Institute and debuted as a pilot program last year, the program aims to address subconscious biases that might make students feel isolated. It features a series of monthly workshops, during which teachers are trained to become more aware of their own biases and assumptions.

They are also coached on how to deal

with these problems while teaching, and professors can sign up to work one-on-one with experts in the fields of educational equality and racial justice. Training sessions will advise professors on how to facilitate respectful conversations, design culturallysensitive syllabuses and create a positive environment in their classrooms.

Part of the impetus for the program stemmed from a student panel discussion, which facilitator Krista Robinson-Lyles said identified a pressing need to prevent minorities on campus from feeling silenced or marginalized. A new virtual reality room that recently debuted in the Edens game room—also known as The Bolt—allows students to play any of the 50 games currently programmed on the system. The system was built by Mark-Everett McGill, a senior analyst in the Office of Information Technology, in approximately eight months.

“We wanted to bring something that was rather unique to our residential areas,” said Joe Gonzalez, dean for residential life. “The whole purpose of The Bolt was to bring something new and fun to student life, and that certainly seems to have been a very big success. My hope is that the same thing happens to the virtual reality space.”

Rick Johnson, associate vice president of student affairs for Housing, Dining and Residence Life, wrote in an email that the virtual reality room was always slated to be a part of the gaming suite. However, delays with the vendor caused the room to be opened this year instead of during the Bolt’s grand opening last Fall on the second floor of Edens 1C. Although the new virtual reality room may be entertaining for those that visit, McGill said that the technology will also serve educational purposes. the virtual reality room involves manipulating the solar system and observing the impact of those changes.

“Even though it’s kind of a play-around toybox, there is still a lot of education behind it,” McGill said.

Other games may cause students to work up a sweat, McGill said, because they involve the player actually moving to play a firstperson fantasy game.

In the future, McGill noted that some students may be able to write programs for games that can be used in the virtual reality room.

Kornbluth gives insights into undergraduate degree at DKU Claire Ballentine The Chronicle Duke Kunshan University, now in its third year, offers master’s programs and a semester-long program for undergraduates, but a full undergraduate degree program is in its near future. The proposed undergraduate curriculum is expected to be discussed by the Board of Trustees and Duke faculty this year. The Chronicle’s Claire Ballentine spoke with Provost Sally Kornbluth about the specifics of the proposed program and what concerns have been raised so far. The following conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

The Chronicle: What discussions are going on about the undergraduate program at DKU? Sally Kornbluth: We’ve been discussing the undergraduate program over the last couple of years. There’s a faculty committee that has been working to design an interdisciplinary,

liberal arts curriculum that would be really unique for China but also unique anywhere. The curriculum was developed through a faculty committee, then it’s been vetted by other committees, and we also had consultants in China that were familiar with higher education in China discuss it. The other piece of it is that we’ve begun to delve deeply into what would be necessary for it to succeed in terms of getting high quality faculty and students there. There’s been a lot of thinking about why we want to do this undergraduate degree. To me, the strongest arguments are really three-fold.

One is that it is a great opportunity for pedagogical experimentation. [There are] things that we can do on a green field that would allow us to develop new teaching mechanisms and potentially bring them back to Duke. The other thing is that we can really impact China for decades to come, and China is going to remain an important player on the international scene. We’re talking about introducing a whole new kind of education there. The question is, ‘what’s

in it for Duke?’ I think a couple of things—we’re already starting to see the benefits of being embedded there, and we only expect that to grow. The vision is that if Duke is a truly global university, then we can really achieve a lot from being embedded there, impacting what’s happening locally and globally in education.

TC: Why is the University doing this specifically in Kunshan, China?

SK: I think China is a really important player on the global stage both economically, politically and socially. Part of it was practical—how do you find a partner that truly wants to invest that has the wherewithal and interest to build a really firstrate campus, and a place that is really invested in making a commitment to higher education? Kunshan is close enough to Shanghai that it’s influenced by a big city, but it’s very much a suburban campus. They’ve built us a really beautiful facility there. They’ve given us free hand in what education offerings we have there. They really want an undergraduate program there as they’re trying to grow their economy. They see that students with the ability to read, write and think critically are going to be critical for the growing of their environment. So we’ve got a partner willing to make the necessary investments and a location in the wealthiest province in China, where we can have a great lifestyle there for our faculty and students and have an impact there for the whole country.

TC: What degrees will be offered and how will a degree from DKU compare to a degree from Duke in Durham?

SK: We don’t have anything absolutely definitive yet because it would have to be approved both by our accreditors and the Ministry of Education in China, but what we believe will happen is [the degree] will say Duke University as offered at Duke Kunshan University. So it would clearly be a Duke University degree, but clearly at Kunshan. We had a market research firm who talked to students, and they want the degree to indicate that it was given in China, and they don’t want to be accused of misrepresenting their degree. I think that the Duke faculty and students feel the same way. They want Duke Kunshan University to be a really high-quality university but not say it’s the exact same thing because it’s not.

We want it to be of equally high educational caliber.

TC: What is the timeline on the program’s approval?

SK: The vote by the Academic Council is in November, so we should know soon if the faculty approve it, and then the Board of Trustees has a vote in December. Then we start marching toward a launch. The original conversation was to launch in 2018. That has not been ruled out by any means.

But on the other hand, we really need to start recruiting faculty and have a serious recruitment operation for students and see if we can make that date. 2019 is also a possibility. We want to make sure we have a truly high-quality offering, and we’ll know as soon as we start to recruit faculty how easy or difficult it’s going to be. We don’t need a huge number to launch because it’s a small, liberal arts college.

“Students felt invisible,” she said. “Not only on a regular basis, but they felt like when things happened on campus that were clearly racist incidents, that was either swept under the rug by the University at large or that their professors would never mention something had happened, and this whole emotional impact that the trauma of racism can have on students. And that in turn has an impact on students’ willingness to participate.”

In April 2015, a noose was found hanging at the Bryan Center plaza, which ignited conversations about racial hostility.

A Duke investigation found that the noose was the result of a lack of cultural awareness, not racism.

Last February, news broke that Executive Vice President Tallman Trask had hit a parking attendant with his car and allegedly called her a racial slur. Students then initiated a series of protests, including organizing a one-week sit-in of the Allen Building. “[Students] feel unsafe and unwanted, and that has an impact on students’ ability to actually succeed, because it

is such a heavy burden,” Robinson-Lyles said. “Even when students didn’t feel unsafe, they felt like their cultural context wasn’t understood by many instructors on campus.”

The new program aims to be one piece in the puzzle that will bridge this gap. Its organizers hope to discuss how professors can improve overall learning by merging what goes on inside the classroom with external influences, such as what happens on campus.

“One of the biggest assumptions is that equity is only for the oppressed,” said facilitator Tema Okun. “That’s not the case. Equity is for all of us, because we are all harmed by racism and bias. All of us have a stake in figuring out what we are going to do about it.”

The program—which is drawing contributions from students—will also show professors new methods of diffusing tension and maintaining respect between teachers and students.

“We ask ourselves where we want to go,” said Barbara Lau, director of the Pauli Murray Project at Duke, which focuses on enduring inequities and injustice in Durham. “What would a classroom where everyone is able to learn look like? How do we get there?”

Johnson echoed these sentiments. “[Virtual reality] in The Bolt has the ability to not only build community around a really cutting edge technology, but it can be used for academic purposes, and students can write VR software,” Johnson wrote in an email.

Junior Vincent Miao stumbled upon the virtual reality room during its opening and said he was impressed.

“I’ve never used any [virtual reality device] with motion sensing like the one in The Bolt, so that was super, super cool,” Miao said. “It’s a unique experience that you don’t get everywhere.”

Johnson added that there are no other universities in the country that offer a game room with a virtual reality component in a residence hall.

Gonzalez explained that because the technology is still relatively new, OIT will staff the virtual reality room to ensure that everything is used correctly and securely.

The Edens game room opened last Fall as a part of a renovation project to Edens Quadrangle that improved facilities and added a gym and fitness studio. The game room also features computer gaming desktops and screens for Playstation, Wii and Xbox games, including four that are combined into one larger display.

SK: I would say they fall into a few categories. The first is financial. Duke has spent a good deal of money there on Phase 1, and although the expenses have been as anticipated, the revenues have fallen short. The master’s programs haven’t grown at the rate that we would have liked. So the question is, how do you know you’re going to have the revenue in the next phases? In the first phase, the cost was split 50-50 with our Chinese partners. In the next phase, we have kept our subsidy of the operation at $5 million, and there will be $1 million of additional funding put into the hands of Duke faculty who want to do collaboration there. But our partners have committed $40 million a year. So a lot of the initial cost concerns are lost.

The other is the faculty quality, and one of the things that is going to be critical is the participation of Duke faculty in selecting colleagues for Duke Kunshan University. I think it’s going to have long-term payoff if the Duke faculty participate integrally in recruitment. In terms of student quality, we want students who are really strong. Part of that is going to be personal interviews to make sure their English is strong, because all the courses are offered in English. We’re going to have to make sure that they’re strong academically and so that has been another point of contention.

Another thing has to do with academic freedom. There are seven joint venture universities in China, and no one has seen an infringement on academic freedom. A number of the professors at Duke who have taught there commented on the huge breadth of viewpoints in the classroom, and they’re just bowled over by it. They’ve talked about anything they’ve wanted in the classroom, with no censorship. Also the students and faculty there have access to anything on the Internet that we have at Duke.

We’re thinking about this not only for the present but for 30 to 40 years from now. If we can really do this well, this will have a huge international impact and also put Duke in an extraordinary light.

In addition to his classroom responsibilities, Dr. Feaver is Director of the Triangle Institute for Security Studies (TISS) and also Director of the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy (AGS). From June 2005 to July 2007, he was on leave from Duke, working as the Special Advisor for Strategic Planning and Institutional Reform on the National Security Council Staff at the White House. His most recent academic book, for which he is a joint author, is Paying the Human Costs of War (Princeton University Press, 2009). Wayne Bergeron landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson’s band in 1986, and since then, he has recorded with scores of jazz and pop musicians.

His passion for big bands has led to his inclusion in some of Los Angeles’ most well-respected bands. He has recorded and played with Quincy Jones, Gordon Goodwin, Arturo Sandoval, Pat Williams, Sammy Nestico, Jack Sheldon, Chris Walden, Tom Kubis, John La Barbara, Bob Florence, Ray Anthony, Bill Watrous, Bob Curnow, and more recently Vince Mendoza’s re-creation of the Gil Evans/Miles Davis recordings featuring Terance Blanchard and Sean Jones. Bergeron’s first solo effort, “You Call This a Living?” earned him a Grammy nomination in 2004 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble.

He serves on the faculty at California State University Northridge and has worked on over 350 TV & motion picture soundtracks. John Brown directs the Duke Jazz Ensemble. Guided tour of the newest exhibition, Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art, the first contemporary art exhibition to question and explore in-depth the complex and contested space of the American South. Junebug (rated R, 1hr 46min), introduction and Q&A by film director Phil Morrison. The Nasher Museum in conjunction with the Duke Screen/Society presents Southern Cinema – a series of southern films to complement the exhibition Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art. In the film Junebug, a dealer in “outsider” art travels from Chicago to North Carolina to meet her new in-laws, challenging the equilibrium of this middle class Southern home.
