Nasher celebrates and reflects on 10th year Elizabeth Djinis The Chronicle For ten years, the Nasher Museum of Art has been a landmark for the Triangle’s art scene.

Designed by world-famous architect Rafael Vinoly, the museum’s off-white facade makes Campus Drive more than just a leafy passage between East and West Campus. It has been included in The New York Times’ 36 hours in Durham, The Boston Globe’s Travel section and Buzzfeed’s “34 Amazing Things That Will Make You Fall in Love With Durham, N.C.” It has also experienced substantial growth since its opening, bringing nationally-renowned, staff-curated exhibitions and growing its permanent collection.

But apart from the national attention, it remains a landmark for students as well—a favorite brunch spot and a builtin campus window to engage with the

local art community. And, more recently, it has allowed students to become involved in the curatorial process.

The museum will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year with special events this fall, including two commemorative murals, a party during Homecoming weekend and a block party in downtown Durham, as well as providing a chance to look back on a decade of global art perspectives.

‘Like New York’ When the Nasher Museum first opened in 2005, Sarah Schroth, the museum’s Mary D.B.T and James H. Semans director, said people didn’t know what to make of it. A world-class museum in Durham, North Carolina? It seemed implausible.

“My own son said to me, ‘Mom, this is like New York,’” Schroth said of the museum’s opening.

director Kimerly Rorschach, alumna of the University of Chicago’s David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art. In 2006, the museum cemented a focus on contemporary art by hiring Trevor Schoonmaker as the curator of contemporary art. Both Schroth and Schoonmaker steered the museum toward curating high-quality traveling exhibitions that garnered them prestige and press across the nation.

For Schroth, the turning point was her 2008 exhibition “From El Greco to Velazquez: Art During the Reign of Philip II.” The show put the Nasher on the map.

Time Magazine voted it the no. 3 best show of 2008.

“For me, that was the first time we really got national recognition,” Schroth said.

Schoonmaker’s exhibitions added to the museum’s hype when he highlighted the work of artist Barkley Hendricks in his 2008 show. Hendricks had been mostly

forgotten about until Schoonmaker decided to feature his work.

“It picked up the man’s career,” Schroth said. “Because of Trevor’s show, one of Barkley’s paintings was on the cover of Art Forum. That was a big deal for us.”

But though these exhibitions’ reputations increased the Nasher’s fame, the permanent collection was always a priority.

“Temporary shows, they come and go.

But the collection is ours,” Schroth said.

In the past ten years, the Nasher has acquired more than 1,000 works of art, said Wendy Hower, director of engagement and marketing.

And now, with this past summer’s renovation of the Wilson Pavilion, the museum will have even more gallery space to showcase the collection. “The New Galleries: A Collection Come to Light,” opened Aug. 27 and runs until See NASHER on Page 13

Ciompi Quartet Commemorates 50th Anniversary Grace Peterson The Chronicle If you were a college student in 1965, you may have found yourself with a daisy chain on your head, a peace sign necklace on your chest and a countercultural rhythm in your heart. The year 1965 was saturated with political and cultural upheaval, but it was also a time of musical revolution. Bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were making their debuts just as Woodstock beckoned around the corner. The year was also significant in the history of music at Duke—amidst the tumult of rock and roll, a classical string quartet was born.

Founded in 1965 by violinist Georgio Ciompi, the Ciompi quartet burgeoned over the years to reach its current internationally renowned status.

Although the group has experienced structural change over its 50-year life, the quartet’s longest involved member Fred Raimi, professor of the practice of music, said he believes Ciompi is similar to how it was when he joined in 1974.

Most importantly, its mission remains the same: to grace the world with the gift of classical music.

Currently comprised of four Duke professors of the practice of music— violinists Eric Pritchard and Hsiao-mei Ku, violist Jonathan Bagg and cellist Raimi—the Ciompi Quartet continues to uphold its original mission. In addition to playing concerts throughout the year, the members of the quartet enrich Duke’s community by teaching music to

students and immersing themselves in life on campus.

Ku, for example, is a faculty-inresidence in Pegram Dormitory, which is designated as the Performing Arts living and learning community. By living with the students and inviting Pegram residents to play with her weekly, Ku gets to know a variety of Duke’s aspiring musicians. She said that she finds joy in watching students grow and discover their own voices.

“The [students] truly learn music,” Ku said. “They are not just learning how to perfect each piece but how to share their personality or character.”

The Ciompi Quartet launched their performances for this school year with an informal concert in Pegram Aug. 24 that included music from the first and second movement of Debussy’s Quartet.

Students who attended the concert agree that the show was an exciting way to start the school year.

“To me, the Ciompi Quartet’s performance was one of the best performances of Debussy’s Quartet.

It’s great that we have access to these amazing musicians,” said freshman Yoon Ko. “As a student who wishes to participate … in the chamber music scene, I am grateful to have the Ciompi Quartet living with us and working with the students.”

Beyond the Duke community, the Ciompi Quartet plays on the world stage. Duke Performances shines spotlight on hip hop Gary Hoffman The Chronicle

Since its inception a few decades ago, hip hop has grown to become both a dominant force in our sociocultural dialogue and a continuously developing form of expression for a variety of artists across the globe. Consequently, Duke Performances is holding a spotlight on the genre this year that will culminate in talks, class visits, master classes and performances from high profile, internationally-acclaimed rappers and dancers.

“Hip hop has proven its staying power, its international influence, its capacity to articulate social and cultural concerns, its ability to innovate aesthetically,” said Aaron Greenwald, executive director of Duke Performances. “All of these things have made it the topic of discourse and focus in the academy.”

The two rappers featured this season are Blitz the Ambassador and Ana Tijoux.

Blitz is a Ghanaian-American artist based in Brooklyn who resides in the socially conscious vein of hip hop. Tijoux is a Chilean rapper who is heavily engaged in women’s rights and politics in Latin America.

Harris Puremovement will also be featured. The group has received rave reviews from multiple publications, including the New York Times.

This spotlight will potentially lend cultural exposure to many students who might discover or further cultivate an interest in hip hop. Francis Roberts, an adjunct assistant professor of music who teaches a class on hip hop and rap appreciation at Duke and is a hip hop artist himself, noted the spotlight’s potential capacity to educate students.

“The more opportunities we have to show the influence, the creativity and the relevance of hip hop music in our culture and even the Duke community, we’re able to show how the impact can be positive and long-lasting on a lot of these students,” Roberts noted.

Some former students of Roberts have switched focus after taking his class and are now pursuing careers in music.

Although students will likely learn much about hip hop technique and artistry from the guests’ talks, there will also be a strong interdisciplinary presence focused around social commentary. The artist residencies will include

‘Soy Cuba’ film brings 1959 Cuban revolution to life Shayal Vashisth The Chronicle Black and white images of bikini-clad women lounging on a cruise ship are juxtaposed with unsteady footage of Molotov cocktails arcing through the air at a drivein movie. Glamorous shots of extravagant nightclubs follow scenes of uniformed men slamming the butts of their guns into doors, forcing their way into a home. The screen goes dark and bold letters declare “Soy Cuba.”

This is how the Arts of the Moving Image department will kick off its showcase of Cuban cinema, when Screen/Society shows 1964 film “Soy Cuba” Sept. 16 at Bryan Center’s Griffith Film Theater. “‘Soy Cuba’ is a very peculiar film because, [it was] a tremendously ambitious production, it was a Soviet-Cuban collaboration,” said Gustavo Furtado, assistant professor of Portuguese and Romance Studies and curator of the Cuban Cinema series. “The film was tremendously complex and yet when it came out, it was a bit of a flop.”

The film documents the experiences of four different Cuban natives suffering during the 1959 Cuban revolution to overthrow dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Out of an interest in promoting international socialism, the Soviet government agreed to fund a film about the Cuban revolution in partnership with Cuba’s Fidel Castro government. Filmed in Cuba under Russian director Mikhail Kalatozov and Russian cinematographer Sergey Urusevsky, “Soy Cuba” took a year to produce, but was not well received in Cuba or the Soviet Union.

Thirty years later, in the early 1990s, filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Francis Coppola revived the film at a festival and began the campaign to restore it.

“Very well-respected American filmmakers and film scholars rediscovered the film and felt that it was one of the most remarkable, impressive, important films ever made, and yet it had not had its impact at the moment when it came out,” Furtado said. “That led to a whole reconsideration of the value of this film.”

The significance of the film can be partly attributed to the cinematography that makes the film a “visual tour de force,” Furtado said.

“Soy Cuba” employs techniques including using infrared film stock, originally developed by the Soviets for military purposes, to exaggerate contrasts and complex long takes.

One of those long takes in the film includes a vertical movement concluding with the camera being submerged in water, the lens coated in a submarine periscope cleaner to make it impervious to water.

“It’s still a fantastically beautiful film, but it is also terribly dated,” Furtado said. “It’s a strange object that had a most utopian-like ambition for what a cinema of revolution could be. It was aesthetically breathtaking and astonishing, and yet it is only appreciated nostalgically.”

Furtado described the film as one that allows viewers to think about politics, history and time; about politics and aesthetics; and even about politics and nostalgia. Despite recent developments in United StatesCuba relations with the opening of the U.S. embassy in Cuba, the question the film raises is in the ambition of redeeming such a film only at the moment when its particular politics “no longer have any teeth, no longer

have any claim to the present,” Furtado said.

Screen/Society’s three-film series—the others being “Lucy” and “Memories of Underdevelopment”—ties into Furtado’s “Cine Politico” course, a Spanish course that studies major works of Latin American cinema from the 1960s onwards in the context of the political affairs of the films’ time periods.

Furtado emphasized “avant garde” cinema in which filmmakers focused on using the form and aesthetic of art as a crucial

instrument in conveying political struggles. “’Soy Cuba’ is one of several emblematic examples examined in the course in an intersection of modernism with radical politics, which makes post-revolution Cuba a time period of interest,” Furtado said.

“Soy Cuba” fits in that it is the product of cinema and social experimentation to explore local politics on a global dimension.

Mosse’s ‘The Enclave’ records war stories with a twist Dillon Fernando The Chronicle Flipping through the channels on television, it seems that the an overwhelming amount of content has to do with war. War, while truly horrific at its core, can appear to be just as commonplace and normal as a commercial for Viagra. However, the horrifying nature of war hasn’t changed.

Society’s sensitivity towards the graphic brutality of war has been suppressed by war’s prevalence in media. Richard Mosse’s “The Enclave” explores this jaded attitude toward war images by using the film as a medium to capture war in the Congo with an artistic twist.

In the back right pavilion of the Nasher, Mosse’s piece is set up in a dark room where six screens have been deliberately placed around the room. Each screen shows a different sequence and cut of Mosse’s video of war in the Congo. The piece in its entirety lasts 40 minutes. At first glance, what immediately stands out is that the landscape of the Congo is unabashedly pink and red.

“This particular film was shot with infrared technology used for camouflage detection from World War Two... finding Vietcong in the bush during the Vietnam War... and in practical applications in the study of landscapes such as glaciology, cartology... basically anything with -ology,” Mosse said during a presentation at the Nasher. “But it was also appropriated by popular culture [for album covers]... for those [artists] who were protesting against the war.”

As a result, Mosse takes this anachronistic technology designed for war and uses it to document a completely different wartime circumstance. Mosse described the conflict as being partially driven by the civil violence between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups in parts of the country. Mosse followed a group of Congolese rebel fighters through their journey in which the ardent green becomes transformed into a fervent pink.

It was this raw, psychedelic video footage that captured the attention of Nasher curators Sarah Schroth, the Nasher’s Mary D.B.T. and James H. Semans director and Marshall Price, curator of modern and contemporary art, in a visit at the Venice Biennale in 2013.

“We had known of his large scale photographs... at many large scale art shows. But, this video medium really captivated the Nasher curators because it was so powerful in the way that it was presented on six channels,” said Wendy Hower, director of engagement and marketing for the Nasher.

What was also enamoring for Nasher curators about this work wasn’t just the raw depiction of war but it was how its uses of color, cinematography, and display transformed what can be a typical war scene into a jarring and empathetic experience.

Hower noted that though many of Mosse’s infrared landscape photographs could be misconstrued as a “fairy wonderland,” “The Enclave” is gripping because it shows clear evidence of the tragedies of war and how it affected the

“The way the film is shot with a steady cam sweeps me away into the film. The pink and magenta colors are so creepy, dark, and beautiful that I just can’t keep my eyes off of the film,” Hower said. “The juxtaposition of this fairyland landscape with this brutal war zone is just so moving...and you truly understand the context [of the Congo].”

“The Enclave” is different than most other video exhibits the Nasher has brought to the museum, Hower said. What really sets it apart from the

previous exhibits is the multi-channel system that graces the entire pavilion.

Additionally, the positioning of the screens in the display allows the audience to design their own viewing experience.

One can step back and view the piece as an amalgam, or step inside the maze of screens and have three different screens each projecting the violence three distinct ways. In this way, the final piece is able to resonate more naturally with the audience and immerse them into See MOSSE on Page 15

A multi-visit residency by abstract painter Odili Donald Odita, who has been commissioned to create two large-scale murals as part of the Nasher Museum of Art’s ten-year anniversary celebration, Nasher10. One mural is in the Mary D.B.T. Semans Great Hall of the museum and the other is on the Foster Street wall of the Downtown Durham YMCA. The temporary murals will remain on view through 2017.

The Carolina Theater will be showing the 1950s classic “The Sound of Music” in honor of its 50th anniversary Sept. 19 and 20. Unless you’ve lived under a rock, you know that the musical film is about the nun Maria (Julie Andrews) who becomes the governess to the children of Captain VonTrapp (Christopher Plummer). This film features love, Nazis, plenty of sing-a-longs, and an intermission.

The fast-growing, studentdriven creativity movement TC: How do you hope to reach students who wouldn’t naturally gravitate towards the arts?

Amy Unell: We’re working in partnership with student groups like duARTS and visarts as well as organizations like the Nasher on the art card, the new art bus, the Duke Create workshop, the Nasher’s 10th anniversary and Artstigator popups. It’s exciting all of the things we have planned.

We really want Artstigators to work together to build and support the growing community in the arts.

AU: Students can artstigate through all kinds of collaboration that we have. Either by taking a Duke Create workshop to learn about photography or print-making or just trying something they haven’t tried before. Duke and Artstigators have all these collaborations and different opportunities. Those are two examples of ways that students can be open to trying something new and meeting people who are engaged in creativity. What’s great about the Art Card, for example, is that you go to different arts events, support your friends and, on top of that, you get to get free food at some of your favorite restaurants.

TC: How have Artstigators used social media to spread the word?

AU: Artstigators is all driven by the people, by the artstigators themselves. So this summer we featured students, alumni and Artstigators all over the world on our Instagram to show that artstigating is happening every day all over the world. There’s Artstigating happening from Rome to Dublin to Durham. People are hashtagging their photos on social media with Artstigators, which really helps connect their community so we can kind of further build and support the community.

AU: I just love to be part of this incredible university at Duke. It’s on the national movement of arts engagement and higher education. That’s incredible every day to see that happening here at Duke. We’re open to collaborating with all student groups to support creativity. That’s really unique to the Artstigators.

And at their helm, as expert of all things art at Duke, is Amy Unell. Schroth hopes this will encourage community and student engagement with the material.

“I envision a Duke student coming in and saying ‘That’s my African mask’ or a Durham community member saying ‘This is my favorite pre-Colombian cylinder vase,’” Schroth said.

The additional space has also allowed the museum to feature objects they never would have before, like Navajo rugs.

“They’ve never ever been up,” Schroth said excitedly. “Never ever.”

The 10th anniversary will also bring more artwork to Durham in the form of two murals commissioned by the museum in honor of the event. Painted by abstract artist Odili Donald Odita, one mural decorates a wall in the museum and one is featured on an external wall of the Downtown Durham YMCA. At the Nasher, the mural is titled “Shadow and Light (For Julian Francis Abele),” inspired by the architect who

designed Duke’s West Campus.

Hower said the murals act to “visually connect Duke and Durham.” The museum is also working in a partnership with Durham School of the Arts to educate the public about the murals, stationing students at the mural sites during their productions to share information and answer questions.

Hower said the Nasher has continued interest in connecting the community with the University.

“It’s not going to end with the murals, that’s for sure,” Hower said.

Student involvement Since its inception, the Nasher has made student involvement a priority. The museum has hosted student parties and facilitated the Nasher Student Advisory Board, which allowed students to help plan the student parties.

Last year, the NSAB was changed into the Nasher MUSE—Museum Undergraduate Student Exec—to indicate its changing nature. Instead of a focus on student parties, which suffered from shrinking attendance, MUSE is now geared towards engaging students directly with the art.

“People are maybe looking to the museum for something different,” said Marianne Wardle, Andrew W. Mellon

curator of academic programs. “It’s not just a big social scene. It’s a more critical way to engage.”

The Nasher has also created an internship program that allows students to work one-on-one with the museum’s staff.

Wardle said the program will generally get eight to 12 participants a semester.

Senior Ana Johnson, a former curatorial intern, co-curated the current Ansel Adams exhibition in the New Galleries with fellow senior Rosie Williams during her internship.

The two were given the creative freedom to craft an entire exhibition almost from scratch.

“We had to make a checklist, we had to write all of the label text and at different points we’d be checking in with [Nasher staff],” Johnson said. “It was very free form but it was fun we got to do it.”

Wardle has also tried to bring in students who wouldn’t naturally gravitate towards the arts. She is currently on the faculty of a Bass Connections program entitled Art, Vision and the Brain chaired by opthamologist Eleonora Lad. Ladd took courses in art history in college but gave up her love of art to focus on science. The program has given her a way to teach both.

“My role in that project is helping scientists to think about what they see and

articulate it,” Wardle said. “Sometimes that can be really hard and we take for granted a lot of the visual images we take in.”

Looking forward The Nasher’s success has not left its staff content to sit on their laurels. Schroth wants to look at acquiring more works of art, which would require more funding.

“We’ve been able to do great with the little amount of acquisition money that we have every year,” Schroth said. “But if we had more money we could really make the collection fill in all the gaps.”

Aside from the collection, Schroth is also interested in creating a sculpture park for the museum’s surroundings. She already has some ideas in place.

“You could do young artists, changing temporary things that would stay up and then they’d deteriorate and they’d get rid of them and do another piece,” Schroth said.

And the Nasher is in the process of creating an undergraduate certificate program that would focus on museum theory and practice.

Ten years strong, one thing is clear: the Nasher has solidified its spot in the Duke and Durham community as the preeminent locale to experience worldclass art.

They also record compositions by contemporary composers.

In their travels, Ciompi has encountered a variety of unusual experiences, including several difficulties. Professor Raimi recounts a time when the group was in Albania about twelve years ago and had to take a bus 75 kilometers. Though this distance is only about 47 miles, Raimi reported, the length of the journey was not proportional.

“It took six and a half hours to get there. The potholes were incredible, and it was actually a [very] dangerous road. We finally got to this town. We were about a half an hour late, and the concert hall was not a concert hall but an [exceptionally cold] room.”

Ultimately, the concert had to be shortened, due to threat of frostbite.

Bagg recalled having difficulty in China with flight scheduling, visas and road blocks.

“Whenever we ran into a road block, Hsiao-mei navigated us through,” Bagg said. “She had a motto, ‘When there is no road, I make one.’”

This slogan became an unofficial mantra for the group.

Despite some travel difficulties, Ciompi Quartet recognizes the importance of spreading their classical music all over the world.

Professor Ku, for example, leads a DukeEngage trip to China that is centered around music. She notes that, “People say music is an international language, and it is. Many students who do my DukeEngage go to China, and they don’t speak the language, but they can share their talents and their art-making. I really can’t say how important [this gift of music] is.”

Additional dorm-style performances are scheduled in Brown and Giles Residence Halls Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively, and in Blackwell Residence Hall on a date that is yet to be announced.

Several guest musicians will also join Ciompi in Baldwin Auditorium for the 50th season, including jazz vocalist Nneena Freelon Oct. 3; soprano singer Tony Arnold Nov. 22; Kyo-Shin-An Arts members Feb. 20; and bassist Edgar Meyer April 16 for the 50th Anniversary Celebration and Alumni Concert.

The quartet will also be performing across the country when it is not at home in Baldwin, continuing to make its own road for the foreseeable future.

HIP HOP from page 4 engagements with a variety of oncampus departments and groups, including Latino/a American Studies, African and African American Studies, the Center for Documentary Studies, Women’s Studies and the Africa Initiative.

The involvement of these groups promises to immerse students in hip hop’s multitude of lyrical themes and messages. Additionally, some of these artists offer an international perspective that would be difficult for students to find elsewhere.

“I think it’s very important to support artistry in whatever form,” Roberts noted. “If you like music and you have the opportunity to see some of these international artists, it’s always important to try to do so.”

In the past, Duke Performances has initiated programs that were similar in their focus on a specific aspect of artistry. For instance, one project engaged materials out of the David Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library and another explored African American gospel music. There is also one more season of hip hop residencies planned for next year. Depending on the student response, Duke Performances might make residencies and performances

of internationally acclaimed hip hop artists a continued habit.

“While it’s not something that we do every year, thematic presenting is often a meaningful method for going deeper with our patrons and drawing out academic engagement,” Greenwald noted.

Professor Roberts echoed how this kind of presentation might be helpful for students, especially ones who are thinking about pursuing musical careers in hip hop. In his experience developing as a hip hop artist, he has found competition from his contemporaries to be the most helpful in aiding his own artistic evolution.

Consequently, performances from international artists might stimulate the Duke hip hop community.

The spotlight should be interesting and stimulating even for students who are not necessarily into hip hop. The genre has a cultural and societal hold that has only increased in recent years, introducing it into conversations on a broad range of topics. As a result, the entirety of the student body could most likely benefit from the Duke Per formances spotlight on hip hop.

“I hope that Duke students gain increased appreciation for a now global art form,” Greenwald said. “I hope that all of our audiences will be entertained, educated and transported.”

In addition to the historic “Soy Cuba,” the Arts of the Moving Image department has a variety of events planned for the semester with films coming in from many cultures and countries. Through Screen/ Society, which provides film and video exhibition programming for the Triangle community and advances the academic study of film at Duke.

Sept. 8 will see “Girlhood,” or “Bande de filles,” at Griffith Film Theater, considering a young girl’s newfound take on life after making friends with three free-spirited girls, changing her name and entire lifestyle to be accepted by the

gang—continuing the director Céline Sciamma’s focus on female adolescence and frequent change.

“Poetry,” out of South Korea, follows a late-middle-aged woman who finds purpose in a poetry class after a devastating medical diagnosis and family crime. This screens as part of the CineEast film festival, which also features a visit from filmmaker Xu Xing.

The Fall program for the AMI department also includes a Turkish Film Festival, the French and Francophone Film Festival and the Rights! Camera!

“The Enclave” serves as a sensitizing influence between our own comparatively comfortable world and a war torn world to which many may be numb. Entering the dark pavilion, the viewer is left only to face the screens.

There is nothing else to distract the viewer except for the shocking imagery and dissonant content.

We don’t talk about the Congo [at Duke] except for maybe a class,” Hower said. “Students should come to the exhibition because the subject matter is worth learning about—it is so extreme and relevant.”

Towards the end of Mosse’s lecture, an audience member asked why he chose to film in a way that emphasized the pink and red hues of the landscape.

Mosse’s reply was that for an artist to reveal the meaning of a piece is frowned upon, but in any case, to him the pink literally shows where there is rich and verdant life and hope for this war torn region. “The Enclave” in a sense is hope for us to empathize with people distant from us, yet similar, human and deserving of dignity.

The Enclave is now on display at The Nasher until Jan. 10.

“I think people today are much less likely to dream about radical transformation, or to think that images can have something to do with radical transformation, than they were in 1968,” Furtado said. “A large section of the course is that context—that images matter, that the future is up for grabs, that what’s given is not given forever, that it can be radically questioned.”

In the same way Furtado sees the film as an example of a tool for politics, his students like freshman Chloe Hooks also see the context of seeing the purpose of film and

other artwork from a different perspective.

“In a Spanish class, I’ve never been reading political manifestos before and I’ve definitely never been reading political manifestos that also relate to art,” Hooks said.

“This is a way to make art a more realistic, practical application that is supposed to help people in the world.”

While Furtado hopes the film will expose the experiences of a post-Cold War history that students are often unaware of even though it is also their own history, he also wants students to explore the concept of utopian thinking and art being a force for change.

“My ultimate fantasy is always that these films will leave some lasting impression and provoke some kind of thought,” Furtado said. “That’s really what I expect with any work of art—the world looks a little bit different after you engage with it.”
