42 About Us
The University we know today was once a one-room log schoolhouse in nearby Randolph County, before becoming a permanent academy for Methodist and Quaker children, and then Trinity College in 1859. Despite surviving the Civil War, the school struggled during the Reconstruction Era before adhering to the “New South” image of urbanization and manufacturing with a move to booming Durham in 1892. Entrepreneur Washington Duke’s $85,000 church and civic minded contribution to enhancing the school was followed by support from his eldest son, Benjamin N. Duke, and Ben’s younger brother, James B. Duke, who created the family philanthropic organization, The Duke Endowment, in 1924 and enabled the school’s transition to a university. James B. Duke’s vision was to transform a regional liberal arts college into one of the world’s top institutions of higher education. And here we are. So breathe it all in—the history, the culture, and all of Durham’s magic. Your time at Duke will be, among other things, the most memorable and gratifying years of your life.

FUN FACTS Duke student basketball fans are known as the Cameron Crazies, and for good reason. In order to attend the home game against University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some Duke students brace the cold and camp out in K-ville for almost 2 months.
The Duke Chapel is 210 feet tall. Weddings at the Chapel can be booked only one year in advance of the wedding month. Some couples seeking a specific date have recreated Duke’s tenting tradition by camping outside the Chapel the night before sign-ups begin in order to be the first to book.
Mike Krzyzewski, otherwise known as Coach K, celebrated his 1,000th win this past season.
The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Jovian, the celebrity lemur for the hit children’s show Zoboomafoo lived at the Lemur Center before passing away this past year.

A Closer Look at Tenting TENTING IN K-VILLE for the UNC game is not taken lightly. The process includes line monitors and tent checks with strict rules and regulations. Only the most committed fans survive. Black tenting Students stake their campout spot and begin tenting approximately six weeks before the big game. Blue tenting Students start their tenting experience about four weeks before the game. White tenting The least intimidating kind of tenting, white tenting allows students to begin sleeping out about two weeks before the game. Students who choose not to tent or find themselves on the tenting wait list may participate in a walk-up line—but admission is not guaranteed. Most walk-up liners spend the night before the big game attempting to bear the cold in K-ville— and they’re not even allowed a tent. Despite its craziness, most students find tenting an integral part of their Duke experience. For more information check out www.kvillenation.com.

The Duke Forest is comprised of a variety of ecosystems and over 7,000 acres of land, much of which was purchased by the university in the 1920’s in order to help transform Trinity College into Duke University. The forest helps foster learning, community outreach activities, and most prominently research, as the forest is home to over 60 research projects per year. The forest’s diverse wildlife also creates the perfect environment for recreational activities such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
Named one of the top 10 public gardens in the United States and winner of the 2013 Horticulture Magazine Award for Garden Excellence, Duke Gardens features five miles of scenic pathways, and 55 acres of beautiful plants, flowers and ponds. Duke Gardens offers tours, classes, volunteer opportunities and an elegant rental hall for special events. It is also home to Duke Performances’ Music in the Gardens, a summer outdoor concert series. It’s the perfect place to read a book, have a picnic and spend a leisurely afternoon.

Offering ecumenical worship, intentional student minis-

The Chapel hosts more than two dozen religious groups, creating a safe place for religious expression, support and partnership among diverse faiths. Students, community members, and university faculty and staff gather for worship every Sunday at 11 a.m. The Chapel also hosts a service of prayer and Holy Communion and midweek prayer, as well as a Chapel Choir and special music events. **Note: Due to restoration work, the Chapel has been temporarily closed since May 2015 and will remain closed until the spring of 2016. Sunday worship services will be held in Page Auditorium on West Campus during the 2015-16 academic year.

UNDERGRADUATE LIFE The undergraduate experience at Duke University is unique and challenging—characterized by scholarly pursuit, influenced study and engaged immersion. Duke believes in a spirit of academic and exploration, reaching far beyond the classroom.
Katie Becker
Year: Junior Major: Psychology Certificate: Child Policy Research Campus Involvement: Duke University Chorale, Hollaback! Duke (an organization that I co-founded), Presbyterian Campus Ministry, Ubuntu Selective Living Group Favorite Classes: I adored my Writing 101 class “Coming of Age at Duke.” It challenged me to be introspective, and I learned how to write about myself—something that scares a lot of writers.
I also loved “Gender and the Law.” It was offered through the law school for both law students and undergrads. It was really interesting and let me explore what it might be like to go to law school. Favorite Experiences in Durham: I worked on J-Ville, an ecumenical religious life social justice initiative, and our topic last year was human trafficking. I worked with a local survivor of sex trafficking turned advocate and artist. We were able to arrange to have her art - which was inspired by her healing processes - displayed in the narthex of the Chapel. It was striking and provocative and meaningful to everyone involved.
Zach Gorwitz
Year: Junior Major: Public Policy Certificate: Markets and Management Campus Involvement: Duke Student Government, Board of Trustees, Duke Political Review, Duke Debating Society, Tour guide Favorite Experiences: Duke has given me experiences beyond campus as well— this past summer I was in Durban, South Africa with DukeEngage working for a local government consultancy and living with a
beautifully welcoming local family. The summer before, I worked in Washington, DC at the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence. I wouldn’t have had the same experience without a Duke basketball national championship or living with my best friends on Central or going out in Durham, the vibrant city that maintains its small town charm. Duke is one of the few schools where all of the effusive praise in the application you desperately hope sounds authentic, comes true by graduation.

CAMPUS BREAKDOWN Duke consists of three separate campuses, all connected across 1.8 miles via Duke University Road. Each campus offers a different social experience and some Duke students may live on all three throughout their academic career. East Campus All first-year students are required to live in one of East Campus’s 14 residence halls, which are distributed across four “neighborhoods”. East Campus was originally the site of Trinity College and the Woman’s College from 1930-1972, and it became freshmen exclusive in 1995. The campus’s main features include Lilly Library, The Ark dance studio, and Marketplace – the freshmen dining hall. West Campus is the home of the famous Chapel.
West Campus West Campus, home of the famous Chapel, features many other Duke favorites including Cameron Indoor and Wallace Wade Stadium. The campus was created in 1924 when Trinity College underwent an expansion as a result of the Duke Endowment. Sophomores, juniors and seniors live on West Campus in one of its seven quadrangles, which also host 10 Interfraternity Council fraternities and 13 Selective Living Groups. West Union, which is currently under construction, will offer an array of social dining venues and study rooms.
Central Campus Central campus houses over 1,000 students within a multitude of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and threebedroom apartments. Nine Panhellenic Association sororities, six fraternities and seven non-greek selective living groups currently reside on Central Campus. Central features amenities such as a swimming pool, basketball courts, and a small gym. Students can also purchase groceries, cooking supplies and other living necessities at Uncle Harry’s General Store, conveniently located at Mill Village.
