Getting around your new home East Campus

The United States shares land borders with only two countries; a 5,525-mile border with Canada and a 1,969-mile border with Mexico. While historically our borders have been easy to cross and often barely visible – in one Vermont town the border runs through the center of the public library – our conceptions of what we expect from them changed dramatically after 9/11. This course will look at the history of how the U.S. established borders with its North American neighbors, how border management has changed in recent years, and how this has impacted our security and reputation for openness. The instructor, a 28-year veteran of the U.S. Foreign Service, has visited vast sections of the U.S. border by car, on foot and in the air during assignments in Canada and Mexico. The course will also include guest lecturers from the Department of Homeland Security and State Department, roleplaying by students of U.S. Consular Officers making decisions on issuing a visa, and video teleconferences with residents from the Borderlands. Students will be evaluated through oral briefings, short policy memos, class participation and a final exam.

WST 150S.01 TOPICS: Feminist Art from the 1970s - Kimberly Lamm, TTH 11:40 AM – 12:55 PM What is feminist art? How is feminist art defined, practiced, and theorized? What are its connections to and distinctions from direct political engagement? How and why does it engage with visual culture? This course will pursue these questions by focusing on the Nasher Museum’s exhibition The Deconstructing Impulse: Women Artists Reconfigure the Signs of Power, 1973-1991, which runs parallel with our course. The Deconstructing Impulse gives us a wonderful opportunity to analyze feminism’s multiple appearances in contemporary art and visual culture, and in turn, examine the role visual culture plays in the production of gender, race, sexuality, and class.

WST 160S Feminism in Historical Context – Stephanie Gilmore, TTH 10:05 – 11:20 AM This course is a comprehensive introduction to feminist theoretical conceptions of the social, political, economic, and the human. During the semester students will explore the rise of gender based discourses and social movements in the context of broader considerations of modernity, democracy, and liberal humanism and the value of rights discourse for feminist agendas. It will also include a comparative dimension that emphasizes cross cultural and historical analysis.

WST 164S Race, Gender and Sexuality – Miles Grier, TTH 10:05 – 11:20 AM This course explores the work of ideas about family, nation, and economic relations in shaping life in England’s Atlantic zone of influence from the Elizabethan period to the turn of the twentieth century. Although remembered as a period that loosened the authority of Church and monarch over individuals, the Age of Revolutions also fostered gender, race, and sexuality as categories determining the essential qualities and social utility of individuals. This course follows the maneuvers of a range of rebels and subtle impersonators who used bald resistance and feigned submission to enjoy liberties denied to them. We will imaginatively reconstruct scenes involving theatrical players, passing women, runaway slaves, students, anticolonial rebels and others navigating the terrain of gender, race, and sexuality in the world linked by the Atlantic economy.

WST 167S Feminist Ethics - Kathy Rudy, MW 2:50 – 4:05 PM This course examines and critiques various strands of feminist ethics broadly thought of as the care tradition. Most prominent in the 1970’s through early 90’s, the feminist care tradition argued that women had unique ways of knowing and understanding morality. Based in biological differences many argued that a new feminist ethics could be rooted in the emotional and affective work that women performed in society. The care tradition fell out of favor among most feminists beginning in the early 1990’s but key concepts and dichotomies haunt many realms of thinking today. From postmodern ethics to sociobiology to ecology and conservation, today’s debates pit reason against emotion, selfishness against altruism, and independence against connection. These dualisms demand that we revisit the care tradition and rediscover early feminist insights (and limitations) for contemporary conversations.

From its famed oatmeal in the morning to servings of Indian Dal and meatball spaghetti in the afternoon, the Refectory has many offerings for vegans and meat-lovers alike. Located in the Divinity School, the Refectory is a great spot for a quick, healthy lunch date with a current flame or a group of friends. It serves up home-cooked meals just like those your mom wishes you were eating instead of cold pizza and garlic bread.

The Refectory is also the place to go for the ultimate comfort meal—the eatery serves delicious buttery grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup daily. It also offers a variety of ice cold drinks that can cure any summer fever.

There are really no options to avoid at this organic, homey eatery. But if you’re watching your weight, try to stay away from the extensive collection of treats, which include blueberry cheesecake, jumbo brownies and slices of pecan pie (Warning: few have succeeded in their attempts).

Conveniently located at the end of the West Union Building, The Loop is a prime location for grabbing a bite between classes on West Campus. The selection of freshly made wraps and sandwiches ranges from bacon cheeseburgers to ahi tuna. A classic chicken caesar salad is also a must. Watch out, however, for long lines during the lunch hour and slower prep time than typical fast food.

One of the most popular dining establishments on campus, The Loop is a place to see and be seen. In fact, if you run into fewer than 10 acquaintances on your trip for some warm bleu cheese chips (an absolute treat), you are probably missing an event with free food. Aside from awkward encounters with former hook-ups, the atmosphere is also perfect for chatting about your day and plans for the night with the friends you came with.

So grab a bowl of thick tomato bisque and enjoy some people watching on the plaza with a delicious, hearty meal.

Best Late-Night Study Run

McDonald’s This 24-hour late-night staple will help put back all the calories you burned from a hard night of cramming—and then some. While some opt for a bucket of chicken nuggets, others prefer a soft-serve vanilla cone that is sure to cure any sweet craving. Either way, you are sure to greet one of your Econ classmates doing the same. With so few eateries on campus open in the wee hours of the morning, starving study buddies may make a late McFlurry run.

McDonald’s also offers a few healthy options include apple slices and skim milk—which, if you are brave enough to order—can save you the stomachache the morning after.

Although ordering a Big Mac at 3 a.m. is no one’s proudest moment, it will provide some much-needed satisfaction for those study break hunger pains. We may hate to admit it, but some days you just need some greasy, obnoxiously salty french fries.

Alpine Bagels Sure, the winding line during brunch hours resembles a queue for a Disney ride.

In the morning, customers stand in line for their banana walnut bagel with honey raisin cream cheese or a Rise-n-Shine, the classic bagel with an egg combo. Others head toward the front of the West Union Building to get their fro-yo fix. In addition to bagels and lunch meat sandwiches, Alpine Bagels serves up its ever-popular light treat in a rotating selection of flavors and

This campus eatery also offers several healthy wraps including the famous Presidential Pardon—with sliced turkey, roasted peppers and a special tangy sauce. For those with big appetites, opt for the Butch’s “Mile High” Club which features turkey, bacon, lettuce and crunchy veggies. If you’re vegetarian, be sure to check out one of the salads with blue cheese, walnuts and dried cranberries.

Although the restaurant’s signature bagels do not come close to those students from New York and New Jersey may be familiar with, they are still filling and are a satisfying alternative to a sit-down meal when you’re on the run.

Plate and Pitchfork Although the service is notoriously slow and a steak may occasionally appear on your plate in place of salmon, Plate and Pitchfork is the best way to escape from the monotony of campus dining while staying just a short walk from your dorm room. The Faculty Commons is open for lunch with faculty and Plate and Pitchfork is open for dinner, making either meal a break from the hectic nature of an on-campus lifestyle.

While dining among friends, faculty and staff members, you can chomp

on some juicy salmon with ripe asparagus and fluffy whipped potatoes discussing everything from Shooters nights to the Thoreau reading for your English class. Or, opt for a select vegetarian entree of the day and greet your favorite professor who just ordered the same. Whatever you do, make sure you have enough time and good conversation to wine and dine with friends until the food comes— hopefully to the correct table. But a bite into your food may just make you forget the wait.

Become an America Reads Tutor The America Reads Challenge asks college students to join a national effort to ensure that children can read well and independently by the end of the third grade. Duke America Reads, a volunteer and work-study program, joins this effort by placing tutors in public schools to improve the reading skills of Durham’s youngest children.

Two ways to make a difference: Volunteer Tutors • Serve as a reading tutor at least one semester for two hours each week.

• Attend training sessions led by reading specialists.

• Tutor at Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership schools.

Federal Work-Study Tutors • Serve as a reading tutor two semesters for up to six hours each week.

Perkins/Bostock Library—As the largest campus library, Perkins (includes Perkins and Bostock buildings and the von der Heyden Pavilion) is the center for research and study at Duke. Richard Brodhead, president Since arriving at Duke seven years ago, Brodhead, the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest-ranking official, has been in charge of steering the University and the Medical Center.

Repeatedly urging students to take charge of their own Duke experience, Brodhead has prioritized financial aid, independent research and the undergraduate experience during his tenure.

Since taking office in July 2004â&#x20AC;&#x201D;at the same time as Brodheadâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Dzau has worked to expand Dukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s influence in the area of global health, while also helping to improve health care in the Durham community.

Dzau specializes in cardiovascular disease and is the former chair of the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Tallman Trask, executive vice president Trask oversees all aspects of the University except for academics. His jurisdiction includes facilities, security, dining, construction, parking services and the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual budget. He is also Dukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s treasurer.

One of Traskâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenges this year will be planning renovations, including the West Union buildnig and Baldwin Auditorium.

Richard Wagoner, chair of the Board of Trustees Richard Wagoner, former chairman and CEO of General Motors Corporation and Trinity â&#x20AC;&#x2122;75, was elected to chair the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board in May, replacing former Democratic N.C. state Sen. Dan Blue, Law â&#x20AC;&#x2122;73. As Board chair, Wagoner will be responsible for overseeing the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s governing body. The BOT meets four times a year to map out long-term goals for the University and approve major financial and policy decisions. Wagoner has served as vice chair of the Board since 2007 and has been a member since 2001.

Peter Lange, provost As the provost, Lange is the chief academic officer, responsible for advancing the education and research missions of the University.

He works with deans and other senior officers to maintain the quality of Dukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research, instruction, faculty, student affairs and academic infrastructure.

All major academic hiring and curricular changes are conducted through his office.

Gurdane Bhutani, DSG executive vice president

Pete Schork, Duke Student Government president Senior Pete Schork, a public policy studies and philosophy major, will be Duke Student Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s president for academic year 2011-2012.

In his new position, Schork will be responsible for presiding over DSGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weekly Senate meetings and directing all legislation.

During his tenure, Schork hopes to increase DSG collaboration with other student groups, expand gender neutral housing on Central Campus and ensure that the renovation process of the West Union building goes smoothly.

Junior Gurdane Bhutani, a public policy studies and philosophy major, will be Duke Student Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s executive vice president for academic year 2011-2012.

In his new position, Bhutani aims to make allocation standards for financial aid more transparent for students and to increase work-study jobs and available aid options for international students.

He also hopes to ensure housing equity during the transition from the quad model to the house model by reassessing the Residential Group Assessment Committee.

Michelle Sohn, Young Trustee

Rachel Sussman, Duke University Union president Senior Rachel Sussman will serve as the Duke University Union President for this year.

She coordinated the now-defunct Union Consulting Group, which made efforts to improve campus programming.

Michelle Sohn, Trinity â&#x20AC;&#x2122;11, is the first female Young Trustee since 2004. As Young Trustee, Sohn will sit in on meetings of the Board of Trustees, and after one year will become an active member.

Sohn, who majored in English, also served on The Chronicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Independent Editorial Board.
