We are living in a time during which the world of college athletics is constantly evolving.

Although there has been much continuity at the helm of many of the Duke programs—including men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski entering his 38th season, football head coach David Cutcliffe in his 11th season and women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie entering her 12th season—the atmosphere and team dynamics are constantly changing.

The Blue Devils’ men’s basketball team will be bringing in the nation’s top three recruits in an attempt to salvage some of the production lost by the departure of last year’s entire starting lineup to the NBA. Duke has bought into the one-anddone system, a constantly criticized scheme that has been characterized by numerous recruiting scandals, leaves many declaring that imminent change is necessary.

The Blue Devils’ individual athletics programs have also constantly been changing as coaches continue to successfully build programs across the university. Four Duke teams reached the Final Four in their respective sports this year, and with incoming recruiting classes and returning veterans, these teams seem poised for a return.

Yet with players constantly cycling out, results are unpredictable. Cinderella seasons can happen to anyone as well as disappointing injury-riddled campaigns. Ship without a captain?

Krzyzewski looks to self to take charge as the Blue Devils seek on-court leader

When Mike Krzyzewski was asked last week about who he will look to for leadership this winter, he didn’t hesitate.

“Me,” the Hall of Fame head coach said. “I’m looking for me to be the leader, and my staff.”

It was the only logical answer to a question without an obvious answer, as the Blue Devils prepare for a season with as young a team as they have ever had. Everybody on Duke’s current roster has combined to start nine college games, and the Blue Devils lost more than 86 percent of their scoring from last year’s team.

There is no clear-cut senior captain like Grayson Allen, Amile Jefferson, Matt Jones, Marshall Plumlee, Quinn Cook—the line of succession can continue endlessly. The team’s only senior this season is Antonio Vrankovic, a career role player who was on the floor for 181 total minutes in his first three years and isn’t expected to crack the regular rotation again this season.

Instead, four of the top seven incoming freshmen in the nation will likely swallow up most of the available playing time, but Krzyzewski is well aware of the challenges that will come with such a young team.

“We need to get to know one another before giving out, ‘You’re a starter, you’re a captain, you’re the three man,’” Krzyzewski said. “Let’s find out who we are before we do that.”

The two veterans who appear to be leading candidates along with Vrankovic for team captain honors are junior Marques Bolden and Javin DeLaurier, who both figure to share significant time in the frontcourt for a team that is deep on the wings but thin in the post.

Bolden started two games in February when one-and-done phenom Marvin Bagley III was sidelined with a mild knee sprain, but he played at least 20 minutes in a game just once this season.

A knee sprain of his own that kept him out for most of January hampered Bolden’s conditioning level, but it is uncertain whether he will be able to play more than 20 minutes on a regular basis as a potential starting center.

After Bolden’s two starts, Krzyzewski but DeLaurier in the lineup instead for five games in a row—the first five starts of his career.

The 6-foot-10 forward was more athletic and versatile in Duke’s zone defense and played 30 minutes in its marquee road win at Clemson, but his playing time dwindled with Bagley back in the fold.

Neither big man averaged more than four points or rebounds per game, though they will certainly get more opportunities this season with Bagley and Wendell Carter III both bound for the lottery in the NBA Draft in three weeks. Oftentimes, those opportunities might come with four freshmen surrounding them on the floor.

The Blue Devils will also be looking for their talented wings to develop into on-court leaders, and they will get a head start on that

process when they practice 10 times and travel to Canada for three games in August.

Krzyzewski suggested last week that he will try to give freshmen more chances to bridge the divide in working with the team’s veterans.

‘Yearning to learn’

Gunnar Holmberg represents the future under center as a freshman backing up Daniel Jones

“155 pounds soaking wet.”

That’s how former Heritage High School head coach Dewayne Washington would’ve described then-sophomore Gunnar Holmberg when he took over the program back in 2015.

And if you only watched him at Duke’s spring showcase in mid-April, the same could have been said of freshman quarterback.

Even with 35 more pounds with an inch or two on his frame, Holmberg still stood in the shadow of the rest of the guys in the Blue Devils’ quarterback huddle—one led by the dominant physical presence of 6-foot-5 starter Daniel Jones.

But in some ways, it was fitting.

Jones, who led Duke to a bowl victory last December and has helped his team to 11 wins in his first two seasons under center, will undoubtedly be the man slinging the pigskin in Wallace Wade Stadium come Aug. 31. Holmberg, on the other hand, very likely will redshirt the 2018 season as he continues his development, both in the field and in the weight room.

Unlike most first-year athletes, however, Holmberg did not arrive on campus in late August. Instead, the Wake Forest, N.C., native finished up his high school classes in December 2017 and enrolled at Duke at the start of the 2018 spring semester, enabling him to partake in the Blue Devils’ spring practices and get his feet wet before the rest of the 2018 recruiting

For a guy who started during all three of his high school seasons at the varsity level, a reserve role is bound to be unfamiliar. Yet it is one that could prove incredibly valuable in Holmberg’s evolution.

“Being an understudy is part of being an outstanding quarterback,” Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said following the Blue Devils’ spring showcase. “Tee Martin was able to win a national championship on the heels of being an understudy for Peyton Manning, so take

advantage of that opportunity.”

Living the dream A sporting tradition has deep roots in the Holmberg family. Gunnar’s father, Sean, wrestled at Slippery Rock, his sister, Torianne plays volleyball at Emory and Henry and his cousin runs track at Penn State. Perhaps more notably, his uncle, Rob, played football at both Navy and Penn State before becoming a 7th-round pick in the 1994 NFL Draft and playing linebacker for eight seasons with seven

different teams.

And Holmberg’s great-uncle? That was George Blanda, a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback who played professionally for 26 seasons and captured three AFL championships and the league’s most valuable player honors in 1961.

Football has always been in Gunnar’s blood.

“Ever since I was four years old, I was just running around with a football in my hands,” Holmberg said. “It’s always been a dream to play Division I in the ACC…and [my family] always has my back.”

But Holmberg’s childhood was not without tragedy. In 2009, when Gunnar was in fourth grade, his father died after a 10-year battle with brain cancer at age 40, leaving a gaping hole in the “tight-knit” Holmberg family.

When asked about his family, Gunnar neglected to mention his father and Washington noted that the pair never specifically discussed his dad’s death—he said it may have come up once during their three years together and called Holmberg “a pretty reclusive guy.”

That soft-spoken nature still remains, and it has taken time for the rookie to find his place in Durham.

“The biggest thing has been getting acclimated with the rest of the guys. They’re kind of already set with themselves and their classes, so you have to find your way in, find your group of guys to hang out with,” See HOLMBERG on Page 11

Duke’s championship quest halted in semifinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—The stars seemed to be aligning for Duke in its first Final Four appearance since 2012 less than 100 miles from home, but the Blue Devils could not hold off the hottest team in the nation on the singles courts.

No. 3 seed Duke lost to 15th-seeded Stanford 4-2 at Wake Forest Tennis Center in a national semifinal matchup May 21. The Blue Devils hung on to win a dramatic doubles point, but got blitzed in straight sets in three singles matches before No. 93 Caroline Lampl outlasted Duke’s Kaitlyn McCarthy in three sets to eliminate the Blue Devils.

The underseeded Cardinal have not lost since their No. 2 singles player Melissa Lord— ranked No. 40 nationally—returned from an injury midway through the season, and

they have defeated three top-seven seeds in Winston-Salem en route to their third straight appearance in the championship match.

“Nothing really fazes [Stanford.] The seeding doesn’t faze them. The conditions don’t faze them. They’re so mentally tough,” Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “We’ve done a really good job this year after the doubles point of coming out and winning a quick singles match, and we just weren’t able to do that.”

The Blue Devils (27-4) jumped out to an early lead on all three doubles courts before nearly letting the point slip away. No. 9 juniors McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin wrapped up a quick 6-3 win on Court 1, but No. 6 Samantha Harris and Kelly Chen lost five straight games after leading 3-0 and fell 6-4.

That left it up to Court 3, where sophomore Meible Chi and freshman Hannah Zhao led 5-1, but lost seven potential clinching points

to help Stanford (23-3) pull even at 5-5. Chi double faulted when Duke had a chance to win the set, and Stanford’s duo lost the first three points of the next game before winning four straight with their backs against the wall to tie it up.

The Blue Devils staved off two break points in the next game on Zhao’s serve to take the lead back, and they clinched the set and the doubles point when Stanford sent a lob just long to seal the 7-5 nail-biter.

“We definitely had some opportunities to close out the doubles a little bit earlier, but on the changeovers, they were fine, they were focused,” Ashworth said. “There was never any hanging of their head or anything like that, so I thought that they did a great job coming back, because that could have got away from them really quick.”

Duke won three of the six first sets in singles to put itself in position to close out the match

with three more victories, but the Cardinal’s points were coming more easily, and they quickly closed out the three matches which they led. No. 96 Janice Shin beat No. 84 Hamlin 6-1, 6-1 on Court 5, Emma Higuchi beat Zhao 6-4, 6-0 on Court 6 and Lord dominated a second-set tiebreaker to beat No. 55 Chi 6-2, 7-6(0), giving Stanford a 3-1 lead and leaving the Blue Devils with no margin for error.

In the final dual match of her career, No. 6 Harris battled through a marathon second set to give Duke its first singles win by a score of 6-2, 7-6(3) against No. 15 Michaela Gordon.

“I’m proud of our senior leadership. I thought Sam [Harris] was great for us all year, on the court, off the court,” Ashworth said. “It’s a great thing if your hardest worker is your best player, and she’s definitely set the tone for that.”

Shuman propels Duke to semifinals, upsets No. 7 Texas

Finding himself all-square entering the 18th hole against Texas junior and topranked amateur Doug Ghim, Jake Shuman needed some magic to extend the year for himself and his teammates.

And with just the right touch the Duke senior did just that, drilling a 25-foot eagle putt to advance the second-seeded Blue Devils past the No. 7 Longhorns in the quarterfinals of the NCAA match play championship Tuesday, May 29 at Karsten Creek Country Club in Stillwater, Okla.

Although Duke eventually bowed out later in the afternoon to six-seed Alabama, the semifinal appearance topped off a successful season that included two victories and nine top-five finishes.

“Jake has really played the par-5s well all week. I was with him on nine and 18 and he really pounded the drives well to give himself birdie or even eagle looks. He has length and put the ball in position multiple times. Jake was not laying up. He had a perfect number and a perfect hybrid,” head coach Jaime Green said. “For him to step up and hit the golf shot as well as he did onto the green, that really put a lot of pressure on Doug. Two great golf shots and the eagle putt was just the icing on the cake.”

Despite Shuman’s drive once again going right on the 575-yard par-5, it caught the fairway while Ghim’s ball sat in a fairway

bunker. With Ghim forced to layup following the drive, the Needham, Mass., native striped a hybrid onto the green in two, leaving him two putts away from victory.

“Jake is too good a player and had too good a career, and quite frankly has played too well over this last month for me to think he was

not going to have a good day following some stroke play that he had not scored as well as he is capable of,” Green said.

In the morning match against Texas, Alex Smalley and Adrien Pendaries took care of business to put up two early points for the Blue Devils. Smalley jumped out to a 3-up

lead through nine holes, and never looked back, winning his match 5&4 over Scottie Scheffler. Meanwhile, Pendaries, who has grown accustomed to match play competing in Europe, stepped up to the stage and See M. GOLF on Page 13

AN END AND A Duke men’s lacrosse moves onto title game behind freshman standouts

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.—With a six-goal lead in less than 20 minutes, Duke seemed in control. But the defending champions weren’t going away with ease, and it would take another spectacular performance from the Blue Devils’ freshmen to play one more time in 2018.

Thanks to a pair of hat tricks from Nakeie Montgomery and Joe Robertson, No. 4 seed Duke knocked off top-seeded Maryland in the national semifinals Saturday, May 26 13-8 at Gillette Stadium, earning a chance to play for its fourth national title Monday.

Duke (16-3) opened up a big lead with a nearly flawless first quarter, as both the offense and defense were firing on all cylinders. “[Duke] started out fast, and we certainly did not,” Maryland head coach John Tillman said. “I give them credit. We just had a tough time getting our feet under us early, and they made us pay.”

Montgomery got the scoring started with an unassisted dodge right to the goal before Sean Lowrie—playing in his hometown— added an unassisted goal of his own five minutes later. Peter Conley then put a perfect shot past Maryland goalkeeper Dan Morris’ hip four minutes later before Justin Guterding tossed a pass to Kevin Quigley for a step down shot and goal to make it 4-0.

The Terrapins (14-4) had three first-quarter turnovers and barely got shots on goal while Duke goalkeeper Danny Fowler had two saves.

Morris was the only thing keeping Maryland in the game initially, but he ceded another goal to Montgomery and then a transition score to Joe Robertson before the Terrapin run began.

Jared Bernhardt and Anthony DeMaio scored two goals in 43 seconds to bring Maryland back to life, sparking a five-goal second quarter. Although Montgomery would add another goal to extend the Duke lead and make it a first-quarter hat trick for him, Logan Wisnauskas traded goals with Guterding before adding another.

Tim Rotanz punctuated the big quarter for the Terrapins with a rocket shot from the midfield to beat Fowler, but Duke still led

8-5 as the teams headed to the locker room.

The run only continued after halftime, as Maryland star Connor Kelly and freshman Bubba Fairman found Fowler oneon-one on the doorstep and in transition, respectively, to cut the deficit to just one.

Morris would stifle Duke on nearly every possession to start the second half until Joe Robertson, with just seconds left on the shot clock, beat him thanks to a pinpoint pass from Guterding, ending a nearly 15-minute drought.

There was a point where the game got a little tight, and I felt like I needed to kind of take over,” Guterding said. “That wasn’t the way we were playing in the first half. [Assistant coach] Matt Danowski came up to me and just said, remember, it’s Duke versus Maryland, not you versus Maryland.”

Robertson’s goal sparked a Blue Devil run that would ultimately end the third quarter. Fowler and the defense stonewalled the opposition for the last seven minutes of the period, and in transition off of a Fowler save, Joey Manown found a streaking Reilly Walsh, who put a right-handed ripper past Morris, putting Duke up 10-7.

“It felt good,” Fowler said. “I was seeing the ball today. I try to keep things for me as simple as possible, just focusing on seeing the next shot, and yeah, so today defense played well, had made them settle for some outside shots, saw it, and I did my job.”

The Blue Devils hung with the Terrapin punches in the fourth quarter, coming up big on the defensive end and buying the offense time until Robertson could score with 10 minutes remaining in the game to stretch the Duke lead to 11-7. The run just kept coming for the Blue Devils, as Guterding scored his 209th career goal with 6:48 remaining, sealing the deal on Duke head coach John Danowski’s 399th career win.

“This has been a challenging group to work with this year,” Danowski said. “I mean, they’re absolutely incredibly, incredible high-character kids. But it takes time. You know, there’s this mesh of a couple of transfer graduate students, fifth-years, freshmen, returners, and so it takes a while…. Today I think you saw the end product of that.”

A BEGINNING Freshmen Nakeie Montgomery and Joe Robertson bode for a bright future

Despite a four-goal lead coming out of halftime, Duke found itself up by just one score in the fourth quarter of its NCAA tournament quarterfinal matchup against Johns Hopkins. Just as the script was beginning to flip, it was two goals in under a minute from a rising star from the Lone Star State that clinched the Final Four berth for the Blue Devils.

Nakeie Montgomery came into the NCAA tournament with eight career points. The freshman from Dallas has since added eight goals in three games in high leverage moments including a hat trick in the Final Four against top-seeded Maryland.

Montgomery—the owner of an eye-popping highlight tape from high school—has come on strong late as he now knows how to leverage his game-breaking athleticism, cutting down on a penchant for overaggresiveness as he made the switch from high school to college lacrosse.

“It’s a huge transition going from playing high school lacrosse in Dallas to playing at the Division I level,” Duke head coach John Danowski said.

“There’s some things he got away with in high school that you just can’t get away with here…. Slowly, he started to do some things in practice that you really like, to doing some things in games, not consistently enough, but he’s earned more and more playing time as the season has gone on.”

Montgomery, ranked as the No. 9 overall recruit for his graduating class by Inside Lacrosse, stands as an example of the growth of lacrosse in areas beyond the east coast, the multisport athlete’s versatility and the Blue Devil coaching staff’s ability to build contributors up and down the roster by May. Montgomery grew up as a football player. A running back, he originally committed to Duke to play both of his high school sports before settling on lacrosse full time. Those running back instincts were on full display during the midfielder’s two goals against the Blue Jays, showing short area explosion, downhill running and elusiveness in the open field. The football instincts worked against the freshman to start the season, however, as he would dodge hard to the net but leave the ball behind. Montgomery now appears squarely in control having adjusted to

the speed of the college game.

“It’s May,” Montgomery said. “We’ve all been here since January 9th, that was our first practice, and now it’s May. Everyone’s grown since then as a player. Everyone’s learned, everyone’s gotten smarter, gotten better. In May, it’s trust at this point…. Having Justin Guterding, one of the greatest college lacrosse players of all time, believe in me, helps me believe in myself.”

Dallas is now home to Major League Lacrosse’s Rattlers as the team— which boasts former Blue Devil greats Jordan Wolf and Ned Crotty— moved from Rochester to play its home games in the Cowboys’ practice facility, the Star. The move signals a westward expansion of lacrosse that has seen Denver take home the 2015 NCAA Championship, the University of Utah add lacrosse as a Division I sport beginning next year, and Texas becoming fertile recruiting ground. Four of the top 100 recruits in the class of 2017 were from the Dallas area, a number that could double by the end of this season. The willingness to pull from non-traditional areas has rewarded both Danowski and his opponent, Maryland coach John Tillman, as freshman Bubba Fairman—a Utah native—had five points in his team’s quarterfinal win over Cornell.

It is, of course, the mark of great coaching that enables firstyear players to become breakout stars when it matters most, and in Montgomery and fellow freshman Joe Robertson, the Duke coaching staff has done just that.

Just as Myles Jones and Deemer Class emerged as major contributors during their freshman season, which saw the Blue Devils win their second national championship, Montgomery and Robertson have followed suit.

Class and Jones combined for 41 points in their first campaign. This year, Montgomery and Robertson have 67 and counting. While the bulk of those tallies have come from Robertson— a traditional attackman from Virginia who was not ranked in the top 100 in his recruiting class and is now second in goals scored for a team in the Final Four—both players have started at their respective positions since the season opener.

Robertson had his star turn with four goals in a come-from-behind victory against then-No. 4 Denver—and later added a hat trick of his own during the Final Four against Maryland—while Montgomery’s is coming in the NCAA tournament, but both display the promise of many more offensive explosions to come during their time in Durham.

‘A legitimate fast guy’ Of course, questions remains as to what type of quarterback Holmberg will become.

ESPN put him as its No. 27 pocket passer in the 2018 recruiting class and 247Sports ranked him 15th among prostyle quarterbacks. And with nearly twice as many passing touchdowns as interceptions during his final two high school seasons, the numbers hint that Holmberg may fit more into the mold of a pass-first, Sean Renfree-type quarterback rather than a dual-threat guy like Thad Lewis or Anthony Boone.

Yet, even just a quick glance at some of Holmberg’s highschool highlights show that he is more than comfortable escaping pressure and showing off his legs.

“What I liked, and Duke liked as well, is that he has a live arm.

But what makes him unique is the kid can run and he can throw on the run,” Washington said. “I think he ran a 4.5 [second 40-yard dash] at Duke’s camp, so he’s a legitimate fast guy. It’s not one of those situations where you can judge a book by its cover.

So, who better to model his game after than the guy currently leading Duke’s offense?

Jones, even at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, has been among the Blue Devils’ top three rushers in his two seasons as a starter, and Holmberg could be about the same size when it would be his time to take over the Duke huddle.

But strength is just the start of where Holmberg hopes to evolve in his first year as a Blue Devil. After the showcase, he specifically mentioned footwork and becoming a vocal leader— both crucial parts of being a top-tier quarterback—as other facets of his game where a redshirt season could prove helpful as they did for Jones back in 2015.

And if there weren’t enough similarities between the pair already, add one more to the list: soft-spoken leadership.

“Just be humble,” Holmberg said of the biggest thing he’s learned from Jones thus far. “Not everybody is treated the same.

You have to find your role and be humble, you can never get too ahead of yourself. But just be yourself, do you and hope the rest of the guys follow.”

Opportunities were extremely limited during Duke’s spring workouts. Holmberg is fourth on the Blue Devils’ depth chart behind Jones, Quentin Harris and Chris Katrenick, and the true freshman threw just a handful of passes during the showcase scrimmage.

Cutcliffe, however, knows a quarterback when he sees one— the 63-year-old has coached both Eli and Peyton Manning as well as former first-round pick Heath Shuler—and he already has high praise for Holmberg.

“I told the coaches on the headset today, Gunnar’s a natural football player,” Cutcliffe said. “He plays fast, he’s accurate when he throws the ball, he makes good pre-snap decisions. He didn’t get as many reps as you would like, but when you’ve got four quarterbacks and you’re the new guy on the block, that happens.”

‘The sky’s the limit’ Growing up just about 30 miles from Duke’s campus, it was ACC football all the way for Holmberg. He was heavily courted by all four North Carolina-based schools in the conference—it was just a matter of sorting out “minute differences,” as Holmberg’s former coach explained.

The key, though, was a relationship that Holmberg developed during the recruiting process with Blue Devil offense coordinator Zac Roper as well as the rest of Duke’s coaching staff.

“They grew a bond from a knowledge perspective and through the process, they really hit it off the times they were able to sit down and really talk football,” Washington said.

“The way Coach Roper teaches in the system and the plays there really resonated with him. He could visualize himself in that system, and obviously, Coach Cutcliffe—the way he recruits and he’s a very humble and contrite man, which really resonated with Gunnar. He’s not a flashy guy and I don’t think Duke’s that way, either.”

Still, Cutcliffe’s program has been far from a quarterback factory, especially when compared to its in-state peers.

Former Tar Heel gunslingers T.J. Yates and Mitchell Trubisky each started multiple games in the NFL last season and the Wolfpack can claim a pair of Pro-Bowl passers in Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson.

Even so, the choice to join the Blue Devils was relatively

straightforward for Holmberg.

“Just being with Coach Cut, Coach Roper and learning from the best with those guys. They’ve been around the best of the best, quarterback-wise, and you see the way Duke is on an upward trend,” Holmberg said. “I liked everything they stood for academically, athletically and just playing in the ACC is everything I could ask for.”

With the knowledge that—barring any wildly unforeseen circumstances—he won’t see the field at all this season, there will be plenty of time to allow the Blue Devil playbook to sink in further without any real pressure.

At the same time, there is an outside possibility that Jones could turn pro after the 2018 season, meaning that Holmberg’s time in the spotlight may not be far off.

Until then, it’s all about “yearning to learn.”

“I really feel like he has exponential growth when it comes to just being able to decipher the defense and roll out quickly like you need to,” Washington said. “Once you get to that, which will take some time [as a college player], everyone will see his talent…. The sky’s the limit for the kid.”

What a relief: Blue Devil bullpen fuels Duke’s 2018 success

Under the bright lights of the big leagues, it looks a little something like this: the bullpen door swings open and the reliever, fresh off his final warm-up tosses, trots across the warning track before breaking into a light jog. The stadium’s stereo system blares Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” Guns n’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle,” AC/DC’s “Hell’s Bells” or something of that ilk and the flamethrower settles in on the mound, ready to do his bidding as the crowd rises to its feet.

For this group of Blue Devils, it’s been far from that.

Yet without much fanfare, Duke has developed arguably the best and deepest bullpen in the ACC—if not one of the top units in the nation—and behind an eclectic mix of experienced hurlers and young stars, this crop of Blue Devil relievers has helped carry the team to its highest ranking ever.

“Last year, there were a lot of freshmen in there, so just having the year of experience helps them, so they can grow after being thrown into the fire,” graduate student Ethan DeCaster said.

“We’ve kind of settled into these different roles and we feed off one another. Just like hitting is contagious, pitching is contagious too—after one guy goes, it becomes easier to transition to the next and we can kind of feed off each other’s energy.”

Ironically enough, DeCaster wasn’t even a part of last year’s team. The sidearming 6-foot-3 righty spent his four years as an undergraduate

With one remaining season of eligibility, the Minnesotan reached out to several programs and ultimately found a strong connection with Duke head coach Chris Pollard before committing to play his final year of college baseball in Durham.

Ever since, DeCaster has been almost perfect, logging the most innings of any Duke pitcher without a start while surrendering just three earned runs with a stellar 0.76 WHIP. But

success for the veteran hurler hasn’t come out of thin air.

“Having those experiences, you look back on them and grow from them,” DeCaster said.

“My first year at Creighton, you just get thrown into it and you don’t know how to adjust to the college grind of a longer season. So now, having been through a few seasons of this, I can just help all the younger guys—get them on board quicker and just relay some of the things I’ve learned over my time to help them grow.”

Of all the relievers that DeCaster has impacted most since joining the Blue Devils,

senior Jack Labosky has potentially benefited most. Labosky, Duke’s everyday starting third baseman, also fills the role of the closer and has posted just an 0.84 ERA on his way to nine saves in 21 appearances this season.

Part of this is due to the fact that DeCaster is now absorbing some innings that Labosky might have thrown last season, and, as Labosky explained, some of it is simply due to luck.

Pollard also said the Blue Devil closer has continued his growth through the development of his arsenal.

“One of the things that’s allowed him to make a jump in terms of the level of his success was the development of a slider,” Pollard said.

“That’s a pitch he didn’t have last year. For his first three years at Duke, he’s tried to pitch like Trevor Hoffman—fastball and changeup. Now, he’s got a third pitch, and that’s really helped him have a pitch that moves away from righties and that he can move in toward lefties.”

Pollard has gotten plenty of help from his assistants—in particular, former pitching coach Pete Maki who was hired by the Minnesota Twins this offseason to become a minor-league pitching coordinator.

That move ultimately led to Duke’s hiring of Dusty Blake, who helped Division III Pfeiffer to its first back-to-back winning seasons since Pollard left that program back in 2004. And what Maki started, Blake has only continued—Pollard used the word ‘hyperindividualization’ in the sense that Blake has developed strong bonds with his young pitchers, even in a short period of time, See BULLPEN on Page 15

“The players in Europe are just generally used to playing more match play. Adrien was very excited about getting into the match play portion, you could see it in his eyes. He was really anxious to get out there and excited about the opportunity and had no doubt he was going to be victorious,” Green said. “The product is he had a little experience but the truth of the matter is he is an exceptional player—that is a pretty darn good combination and good to see him take care of business in the early match.”

Despite a valiant effort, sophomore Chandler Eaton fell to Spencer Soosman.

Trailing for almost the entirety of the match, Eaton narrowed the deficit to 1-down with

a birdie on the par-3 11th. However, the Alpharetta, Ga., native could not continue the momentum, losing three straight holes to fall 4&3. Evan Katz jumped out to a onehole lead through two holes but only won one other hole in the rest of the match, losing 3&2 to Steven Chervony.

With the score 2-2, all eyes turned to the Shuman-Ghim match, with the senior Blue Devil gutting out the victory.

“We do not know who goes in what position. I had a feeling from their history that they were going to put Doug last. As the higher seed, we could choose to go first or defer to Texas so they got to put their guy out first and it was an S curve [snake draft] afterwards,” Green said. “I had it in my mind that Jake was going to be the last one on the golf course and had a guess they would leave Doug in that position so it worked out.”

The future looks bright for the Duke squad. Next year, the team will be returning everyone but Shuman, Ben Silverman and Adam Wood. With this invaluable championship experience under their belt, the Blue Devils look primed to reappear deep into the NCAA championship once again, with a chance to secure the program’s first title.

“They want to cherish this right now. It is such a tight-knit group and they work so hard. It is easy for me to shower them with accolades, but these seniors left their mark creating an environment where guys cherish being on the team,” Green said. “This year has been a year of growth….This team stuck with it and did not lose faith. They grew together and it was sweet to see it here at the national championship.”

The newcomer who might have the ball in his hands the most already has a high bar to live up to in terms of freshman leadership.

Tre Jones’ brother, Tyus, was an effective and beloved point guard in his lone season to help lead Duke to the 2015 national championship, and the younger Jones will hope to earn a similar level of respect.

Krzyzewski called Jones a better penetrator than his older brother, and Jones described himself as a “pass-first point guard” last week on campus at K Academy,

where he spent time with classmates Cameron Reddish, Zion Williamson and most of the Blue Devils’ returners.

“I’m going to just try to be the greatest leader I can on the defensive end,” Jones said. “I’m going to try to be a great leader to set the tone on the defensive end every single time I come in here, just doing whatever I can, doing whatever the coaches ask me to help the team win.”

But there is no Cook this time around for the freshman Jones to lean on, and in hostile environments this season, he will look to Krzyzewski for guidance. The head coach is in no hurry to name captains and has taken it upon himself to be the true captain of this year’s Blue Devils, though it remains to be seen where the on-court leadership will come from, if it ever comes at all.

“He knows all his stuff,” Labosky said.

“Mechanics-wise, he’s helping guys left and right increasing velocity or if they might be on the road to having an injury, he knows how to correct that with different exercises to keep them healthy. For me, he’s kind of just let me go, which is nice. If things are going right, he doesn’t try to impose his philosophy on them too much.”

Blake’s influence has stretched well beyond just Labosky and DeCaster. In fact, the seven Duke relievers that have made double-digit appearances this season have combined to hold opponents to just 188 hits in 263 innings with a 2.29 ERA. Of that group, freshman Matt Dockman ranks third in ERA behind the Blue Devils’ shutdown tandem of DeCaster and Labosky and sophomore Graeme Stinson has 80 strikeouts, trailing only starter Mitch Stallings.

Perhaps most importantly, Dockman—a highly-touted freshman southpaw out of Hilliard, Ohio—has remained steady, throwing in big situations time and time again and adding more depth to a group that has more weapons than it can really use in any given game.

“When you see him out there on the mound, he carries himself like a junior or senior—not like a freshman,” Pollard said of Dockman.

“From the day he walked on campus, you could see there was a level of poise in everything that he does. Because of that, you can ask him to do some very advanced things and in particular, we ask him, as a true freshman, to come in with runners on base and pitch on the inside part of the plate with his fastball. And that’s a really advanced skill, but he’s able to do it.”

All of this is not to say that Duke doesn’t have the dominant starting pitching you’d expect from a top-ranked team.

But the Blue Devils don’t have a definitive ace or go-to starter. Sophomore Adam Laskey and seniors Mitch Stallings and Ryan Day all have ERAs higher than 3.80, and the trio averages less than six innings per start.

That means plenty of opportunity for the Duke bullpen to continually prove why it can be the Blue Devils’ most reliable unit.

“We’re pretty deep. You just look at the roster and the sheer number of guys with relief appearances,” Labosky said. “Even guys like Hunter Davis, who’s a really good pitcher, hasn’t gotten a lot of innings because we’re so deep.... If need be, our bullpen can carry the team.”

The question remains: how far? Duke made

the NCAA tournament in 2016 for the first time in 50 years, and last Friday, Duke was picked as the No. 2 seed in the Athens regional and No. 18 overall.

But the Blue Devils want more, and if they play themselves all the way to the College World Series in Omaha, it would make for a “surreal” full-circle moment for DeCaster— who played his first three collegiate seasons on that same field.

“Growing up, we’d even go down there for travel baseball tournaments when I was younger, and then having the opportunity to play there for college was just really special,” DeCaster said.

“Omaha has a dear place in my heart, so it’d be really special to go back and play in that event, but we’ve got a long way to go and we’ve just got to take it one game at a time.”

Lampl broke the junior Blue Devil in all four of her service games in the decisive set, as McCarthy committed back-to-back double faults to fall behind 1-5 and then hit shots into the net on the last three points of the match, losing 6-2, 3-6, 2-6.

“When Kaitlyn’s playing her best, she’s swinging, and swinging at her serve, and when the moment gets big, sometimes she kind of retreats a little bit, but that’s something that she’s done a much better job of,” Ashworth said. “It’s something that we just have to work on with her and keep working on. She’s so talented and hits such a clean ball that she’s got to just be aggressive in big moments.”

Chen’s third set was left unfinished at 3-4. The Duke freshman went on to make a run to the NCAA Individual Tournament round of 16. Hamlin and McCarthy made the semifinals of the doubles tournament.

Looking ahead to next season, the Blue Devils will return everyone in their starting lineup except Harris, and their head coach is excited for what is to come.

“Our program is in a great spot. We’re hungry. This is where we want to be,” Ashworth said. “When I started at Duke 20-something years ago, we went to a couple of Final Fours right away and you think, ‘Okay, this is easy, we’re going to do this all the time,’ and it’s so hard now with the level and the depth of teams, with the influx of the foreign players, so it’s great to be back in this position and give ourselves a chance. That’s all we can ask for, is a chance.”
