HUNDREDS GATHER FOR PRICE’S INAUGURATION

As the sun descended behind Page Auditorium Thursday evening, Vincent Price ascended to the stage in Abele Quad to become the 10th President of Duke University.

In an inauguration ceremony in front of the Duke Chapel, students, faculty, representatives from other institutions, trustees and two former presidents—Nannerl Keohane and Richard Brodhead—looked on as Price assumed his new role.

In his address, Price highlighted the importance of regeneration and growth of the University in a new age while reaffirming Duke’s commitment to the highest standard of teaching. He emphasized interdisciplinary research as an essential component in tackling modern challenges and making new discoveries.

Reflecting on the University’s role in North Carolina and abroad, he pledged to use Duke’s intellect not only to better the world as a whole but also improve the local community in which Duke resides.

“We are called upon to answer the challenges of the day,” he said. “So let us think of today not so much as a beginning but as another renewal, both a renewed commitment to values that guided the choices of our predecessors at Duke, and a renewed charge to make bold choices of our own.”

He touched on the history of Duke’s landscape to draw a comparison between the trees and the University itself. Just as the land that Duke sits on has undergone ecological changes through the years, Price explained, Duke itself has experienced similar periodic renewals.

“Throughout our history, each iteration of

this institution has risen with purpose to meet the great challenges of its day, and has shaded and seeded the ground for grander things to come,” he said.

He noted that Duke’s renewal originates in the classroom with passionate faculty and eager students. Hinting at the importance of transforming education in an age of technology, Price explained that all facets of life have been altered by the digital age—likewise, the education system must also adapt to suit those needs.

Price called upon the University not to shy away from, but to instead embrace the new age of technology.

“Our new century calls for a university audacious and visionary enough to fundamentally redefine teaching and learning in higher education,” he said. “I believe Duke can and will be that university.”

In the past, research along strict disciplinary lines has led to a number of discoveries over the years, Price explained. However, he noted that modern research requires interdisciplinary communication to achieve its goals. He cited several interdisciplinary endeavors that Duke had already created and declared his commitment to continue embracing this new brand of research.

“As our collective knowledge has grown, so too has the realization that the most pressing problems and far-reaching opportunities of our world do not fit into one discipline or profession,” Price said. “We must prevent our research from ossifying around practices that were designed to confront another century’s challenges, and that limit our ability to confront the emerging problems of today.”

in the community—both locally and internationally—and emphasized that the University’s work “does not stop at Duke’s gates.”

He encouraged members of the University to seek out others different from themselves in order to understand—and ultimately better— the world.

The inauguration ceremony also featured several other speakers, including Amy Gutmann, President of the University of Pennsylvania. As president of the university at which Price previously served as provost, she offered her strong endorsement of Price as Duke’s next president.

“We’re absolutely thrilled for our good

friend Vince, but it stings,” she said. “Truly, if ever an academic match were made in Heaven, this is the one.”

She emphasized the linkage between Duke and the University of Pennsylvania, explaining that West Campus architect Julian Abele was in fact a Penn graduate. Price is just the latest example of the qualities and values shared by Duke and Penn, Gutmann said.

Noting that Price grew up with five brothers, she humorously added that his upbringing gave him “a true gift for staying cool under fire” and for “fostering affinity out of difference.”

Duke research identifies genes that can help in lymphoma treatment

“The goal was to really generate as comprehensive a road map as possible for understanding the role of different genes and responses to therapy, and to provide a prioritized list of targets so that we can prioritize new drug development and new clinical trials for these patients,” said Sandeep Davé, professor of medicine and the lead author of the study.

Although lymphoma is the most common blood cancer, patient response to therapies can vary widely, Davé explained.

And unlike lung cancer or breast cancer, where early detection is key, there is no method for early identification of lymphoma tumors. By the time lymphoma is diagnosed, the tumors have spread and all patients need chemotherapy.

However, Davé said chemotherapy is usually effective for just about half of all lymphoma patients. When patients do not respond to the therapy, doctors then try other treatments. But the genes pinpointed in the Duke study will help streamline the process because they can tell doctors about a patient’s responsiveness to chemotherapy before they have even started the treatment.

Endowment sets school record at $7.9 billion Staff Reports The Chronicle

Duke’s endowment fund—which saw a 12.7 percent growth last year—was one of the topics covered at the Board of Trustee’s fall meeting Saturday.

Overseen by DUMAC, Inc.—the professional organization that manages the University’s investments, including employees’ retirement pool and its health system’s investments—the endowment’s value was $4.4 billion in 2009, $7.3 billion in 2015 and $6.8 billion in 2016. The University’s operating budget, which covers financial aid, professorships and construction, will receive $534 million from the endowment, which sits at $7.9 billion as of June 30.

Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, said that the endowment’s growth could be credited to a strong market, gifts from the Duke Forward campaign and “wise investment” from DUMAC. Schoenfeld noted that about 90 percent of trustees— including the six new members that joined July 1— attended the meeting. Apple CEO Tim Cook, however, was not present.

The Board also discussed the undergraduate residential experience with Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, and Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education. President Vincent Price remarked that the move from East to West Campus is important transition to be examined, but that it is also important to maintain the positive experience students currently have at Duke.

New strategic plan focuses on global engagement, natural sciences

Duke is in the process of implementing a new academic strategic plan that defines the University’s long-term goals.

The plan—titled “Together Duke: Advancing Excellence Through Community”—lays the groundwork to build an elite natural sciences program, give graduate and professional students more opportunities and promote global engagement locally with work on campus. It also establishes a committee to work on issues like sexual assault and to expand campus initiatives like the FOCUS Program.

“The current plan continues to innovate with new programs but is also designed to maximally leverage and extract value from all that the previous plan put in place,” Provost Sally Kornbluth said. “The current plan is focused largely on human capital, on our faculty, staff and students and on how these communities can work together to deepen our educational and research programs.”

The goals are starkly different from those of the 2006 strategic plan, which aimed to transform Central Campus and build what is now the Brodhead Center as part of a more than half-billion dollar investment in facilities.

Inquiry and discovery: Building up the natural sciences Tied for No. 41 in chemistry, No. 29 in physics, No. 42 in earth sciences and No. 25 in computer science in the U.S. News’ rankings, Duke sees room for improvement in its natural science department, said Susan Lozier, chair of the steering committee for the creation of the strategic plan and Ronie-Richelle GarciaJohnson Professor of ocean sciences.

“To be a global, world-class university, you [need] strength in natural sciences, social sciences and humanities,” Lozier said. “For the past two decades, Duke has had a strong focus on humanities and many of the social sciences. We’re just recognizing that we need strong sciences across the board.”

The University has long been a leader in areas outside of the hard sciences, headlined by the Sanford School for Public Policy— which ranks No. 4 in the country for public policy analysis.

However, Lozier said Duke has not been able to afford investing more resources into hard sciences until now. The plan says it was a “strategic choice” due to the high costs of “doubling or tripling” science faculty.

Among the primary ways the University seeks to boost its natural science capabilities is hiring more quantitative scientists.

Duke will target junior and senior faculty in science and math, but will also “aggressively recruit and support” minorities and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. To do so, a new initiative—titled Strategic Hiring for Faculty Excellence—will give targeted recruitment funds to deans to improve the faculty’s diversity.

“We want to build an environment of inclusive excellence where all will feel welcome and are attracted to Duke so that we can attract and hire the very best,” Kornbluth said.

For the new strategic plan, the University will have to foot a $132 million bill, “the lion’s share” of which will be directed towards faculty, Kornbluth said. In order to make Duke a hub of science research, the plan also allocates funds to modernize science and computational infrastructure, which it says is still stuck in the

20th century.

“The desire to boost the sciences does not mean that we will neglect the other disciplines,” Kornbluth said. “It is simply that a renowned research university needs to have strength across and between the disciplines. Many of our students are interested in STEM fields and we are seeing increasing societal need for scientific solutions to pressing problems.”

More funding will also be offered for experimental programs and pilot programs to help new researchers get off the ground.

Due to the changing nature of academic research, Kornbluth will also charge a committee to re-evaluate the tenuring and promotion process.

Lozier said academia has changed a lot since the tenure criteria were established. There is now an increased focus in working outside of just public manuscripts, so Duke needs to adjust accordingly, she added.

Opening doors for graduate students In 1997, undergraduate students outnumbered graduate and professional students by more than 1,000. Now, the balance has flipped, with roughly 3,000 more graduate students than undergraduates.

As as result, “The Duke Opportunity” aspect of the strategic plan seeks to ensure that all students, not just undergraduates, receive all of the opportunities that Duke has to offer.

“We want to provide the best of Duke to all students, so we’ve placed a strong emphasis on innovation in undergraduate education,” Lozier said. “We want to take what’s worked, what hasn’t work, and really consolidate those. But we also want to think about making those innovative programs available to... all students.”

The University values ongoing intellectual conversation through learning communities, and hopes to expand that reach for undergraduates and graduate and professional students alike, the strategic play says. It adds that some programs like Bass Connections that came out of the previous strategic plan in 2006 have made strides in this area, but have had limited reach.

The plan also aims to aid graduate students by helping them more effectively work across disciplines to cater to “an increasing array of career options.” Funding has been allocated for Interdisciplinary Graduate Networks Grants that facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and experiences. Another grant program under the plan allows students to work in the field or at internships in order to gain experience inside or outside their field of study.

Duke will now also offer its Innovation & Entrepreneurship certificate to graduate students. Other new options being explored are expanded 4+1 programs, which give undergraduates an opportunity to graduate with a master’s degree in just five years.

For its undergraduates, Duke has also signaled that it will expand FOCUS. The program—which allows freshmen to take two classes and eat a weekly dinner with their professors—is “one of the most effective means for engaging the intellectual interests of first-

year students and for forging deep and lasting relationships among students and faculty,” the plan says.

Nonetheless, just one-third of freshmen have participated in FOCUS. Lozier said space restrictions on the size of FOCUS have become less significant due to dining renovations, and more resources will be allocated to facilitate faculty participation in FOCUS. The final size of the expanded program has yet to be determined, but FOCUS director Edna Andrews is working to find new potential FOCUS clusters for next year, Kornbluth said.

“I am interested in programs that promote deep intellectual engagement of our students and FOCUS has proven to be one of those programs,” Kornbluth said.

Global engagement In addition to building its role in the natural sciences, Duke also wants to become a leader globally. There are three global issues that the plan seeks to tackle via research at Duke: energy and water resources; race, religion and citizenship; and population health. The plan acknowledges that Duke cannot solve these major world problems alone and will need assistance from governments and other agencies.

But given Duke’s resources, the plan asserts that the University can become a “hub for global problem-solving.” For example, it would employ experts from the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Duke University Energy Initiative and the Pratt School of Engineering to help solve problems of water access.

To broaden Duke’s sphere of influence, the University will also create a Durham and the Triangle Working group to take stock of all current local and global projects.

The plan also calls for the expansion of Duke in DC— which offers undergraduate and graduate classes—and aims to “connect Duke’s intellectual capital more directly to the ‘thought ecology’ in our nation’s capital—policy makers, foundations, think tanks and the media.”

Currently, the University tries to tackle certain issues in specific places. However, the plan calls for a broader targeting of these problem-solving initiatives to make them applicable to more situations and places. It intends to fundamentally change the way Duke thinks about solving different global problems.

“There’s a big emphasis on connecting what we’re doing locally here in Durham with what we’re doing globally. We want to apply what we’ve learned in other places,” Lozier said.

However, there’s still quite a few administrative steps before the student recruitment process is finished, he noted. The first set of DKU undergraduates are set to enroll in the Fall 2018 semester, ultimately becoming the Class of 2022.

Price also briefly touched on his recent inauguration and PricePalooza.

“To say that I had fun would be an understatement,” Price said.

“So these are questions that are not directly answered in the paper, but thanks to the [database] and its interactive nature, people can access these data in creative and new ways that allow them to specifically hone in on characteristics of their patients and how they might resemble our cohort of 1,000,” Davé said.

Although the information identifies the full spectrum of mutations in the specified lymphoma genes, Davé noted that it’s hard to say whether the gene mutations apply to other cancers.

Davé said that the next step is to look at all blood cancers and comprehensively analyze their similarities and differences.

“Some of these cancers are quite rare,” Davé said. “And so there will never be a clinical trial for specific leukemias and lymphomas, but if you can draw lines between different leukemias and lymphomas…then you can apply therapies that are already developed in another type of cancer in these patients.”

PRICE FROM PAGE 3 Durham Mayor Bill Bell also attended the ceremony and praised Price for several decisions during his first three months as Duke’s 10th president. To considerable applause in the audience, Bell lauded Price for his commitment to raise Duke’s minimum wage to $15 by July 2019 and for the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue.

“Both of these actions, in my opinion, were the right actions at the right time,” he said. “They demonstrated his leadership and sensitivity to the moral and human conditions of justice and equity in our city.”

Bell added that the relationship between the city and University had gradually improved throughout his terms on the Durham County Board of Commissioners and eventually as Durham mayor, which has spanned the tenure of four—and now a fifth— Duke presidents.

Jack Bovender, chair of the Board of Trustees, also spoke during the event, noting that Duke has long been characterized by its “outrageous ambition.”

“In investing Vincent Price with the power of this office, we are selecting him to be the vehicle of our collective and outrageous ambition,” he said. “We are putting our trust in him and urging him to be our guide through the many challenges and opportunities to come.”

Bovender also reminded the audience that Duke’s enduring values remain steady even as a new president comes to the helm.

“At William Preston Few’s inauguration as president in 1910, outgoing president John Kilgo suggested that while this institution’s administrators change, its purpose and principles remain the same,” he said.

2:00pm – 3:00pm | Student for a Day Lecture #1: Tomorrow 3.0: The Sharing Economy

The Sharing Economy is actually the nexus of two very different value propositions. The first is the extremely inefficient use of “stuff” in the current system. The second is the ability of software to connect with mobile platforms, especially smart phones, in ways that give entrepreneurs the chance to sell reductions in transactions costs. Right now, we own stuff – I do, you do, the people across the street who can’t get their car in the garage...we own a ton of stuff. The self-storage industry in the U.S. has nearly 50,000 facilities, with more than 15 billion cubic feet of space cluttered with…stuff. But people don’t fundamentally want stuff. What they want is the stream of services that stuff provides over time.

So, if people own stuff – clothes, tools, cars, houses – rather than rent, it is because owning secures services more reliably and at lower transactions than renting. But this “preference” for owning is not real.

It could change quickly, if entrepreneurs could figure out a way to sell reductions in transactions costs.

If I have a car and a few minutes, and you need a ride, there is a mutually beneficial deal we could work out. But the transactions costs (the “3 TRs”: triangulation, transaction, and trust) are expensive to work out. The value in underused apartments, cars, tools, and a thousand other items is at this point latent. The problem for regulation is that “sharing” presents problems of defining ownership, and in ensuring that spaces and goods are available. An enormous problem caused by AirBnB, for example, is the conversion of long-term rental units to short term units. Iceland, France, and several cities in the U.S. – particularly New York and San Francisco – have wrestled with this problem, in many cases deciding to outlaw or sharply restrict the use of AirBnB. Founded in 1992, Rhythm and Blue is Duke University’s award-winning, co-ed, secular a cappella group. In the fall of 2013, RnB released its latest album, Solid Ground, which was met with great acclaim. Come hear them perform songs from their nine award-winning albums. The Chronicle the academic year, appearing in venues ranging from dorm common rooms to professional sports arenas. The group has twice won the CARA Award for Best Male Collegiate Album in the nation with its 2006 release, Bring It Back, and its 2008 release, Disconcert. Their 2010 album, All In, was awarded runner-up for the same distinction and won Best Male Collegiate Song and Best Male Collegiate Arrangement with its hit single, “Fireflies.” The Pitchforks’ most recent release, Refraction (2012), another runner-up for Best Male Collegiate Album, also scored a CARA Arrangement Award for its unique take on “Hallelujah.” Tickets can be purchased through the online registration form or by contacting the University Box Office.
