Putnam’s exclusive focus on life sciences organizations offers a unique opportunity to develop extensive knowledge at all stages of franchise development and marketing. www.putassoc.com
“Hi, I’m Maria Sample. I’ll be graduating in the spring with a double major in English and Computer Science. I’m very excited to talk with you about opportunities at <media organization>; I was so impressed and inspired by the way <media organization> covered <current news story> last year; I especially liked the multimedia components on your website detailing events via photo essays and interactive timelines. As a reporter at the student-run daily newspaper here at Duke, I try to combine strong writing with engaging media – I think it makes for a stronger story. I saw your organization is hiring for a reporter and copy editor; to what extent, and how often, do these roles interact with the web team?” [Example for speaking to an alum or recruiter]
Leadership Development Program Example:
“Hello, Ms. Recruiter, my name is Maria Sample and I will graduate in May 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and English. I read that your company is looking to hire ambitious students into your management trainee program. I have been heavily involved on campus and served in several leadership roles through my sorority. My recent internship working in marketing has equipped me with a skill set that will contribute to the success of your company. What have you seen successful candidates for the leadership development program (LDP) communicate as it relates to their experience?” [Example for speaking to an alum or recruiter]

Tips for Questioning Employers at a Career Fair 1. Don’t ask a question for information the employer has released online.
legitimate way to learn about the industry and learn about the company. You can also ask ‘what are the opportunities?’” He also noted the importance of being oneself in an interview.
William Wright-Swadel, the director of the Career Center, suggested picking out seven or eight of the employers of interest that are coming and doing some background research beforehand.
7. Ask questions for the individual [himself or] herself.
“If you’re really trying to be intentional about going and being effective, do a little homework, figure out who you want to know a little bit more about and do some research—that will inform your questions,” he said. Wright-Swadel emphasized that what question to ask becomes clearer if you know what you are trying to do with the question by having a goal in mind.
2. Learn and confirm “Questions are designed to either learn or confirm something you know,” Wright-Swadel said. “If you have a perception that this is an organization that is really seeking to attract women STEM students, going and saying are you interested in STEM women is probably a bad question,” he said. “Going and saying ‘Tell me why you all have made a commitment to hiring more women in STEM’— now you’re getting them to confirm— does this recruiter actually know that this is a goal of the company.”
3. Be genuinely interested Wright-Swadel pointed out that students are often so anxious about asking their question that they do not listen to the recruiter’s answer. “What you’re trying to do is actually say to this person— not only by the question, but by the attentiveness that you have, that you’re actually interested in the answer. Wright-Swadel noted that attentive listening to the recruiter’s answer is also beneficial to the student because after the fair it allows them to further engage through sending a follow up letter or email.
4. How long do people stay at this company? Where do they go? Wright-Swadel noted that most organizations know that students are not “coming to die there”. He explained that 70 percent of Duke students will go on to graduate or professional school at some point and on average will only remain at their first job for 14 months. He emphasized the Duke Career Center’s approach in preparing students for the entirety of their career, rather than just their first job after graduation.
5. Ask about what Duke experiences can be valuable preparation for the role. “Are there experiences that they find, irrespective of where the student comes from, universally make them more effective?” Wright-Swadel said this is an important question to ask multiple employers in order to get a better sense of what kind of skills are valued and sought after in the sector, based on a comparison of the responses.
6. Ask “What are the challenges for the company and for the industry right now? What are the opportunities?” Sometimes the challenge is that there’s a new player on the block… what are challenges is a really
“‘What do you find to be most challenging or interesting about your job?’ Some of the people that are going to be there are a young alum who is eight
weeks into their job. They send them back because frankly they have the best perspective on what it’s like to try and break into the company and how the training is… Really understanding the difference between talking to a young alum versus talking to someone who is a lead recruiter who has been there for years— with a young alum ask what about the company attracted them and what Duke preparation allowed them to thrive there are legitimate questions to ask.”
