The University we know today was once a one-room log schoolhouse in nearby Randolph Country, before becoming a permanent academy for Methodist and Quaker children, and then Trinity College in 1859. Despite surviving the Civil War, the school struggled during the Reconstruction Era before adhering to the “New South” image of urbanization and manufacturing with a move to booming Durham in 1892. Entrepreneur Washington Duke’s $85,000 church and civic minded contribution to enhancing the school was followed by support from his eldest son, Benjamin N. Duke, and Ben’s younger brother, James B. Duke, who created the family philanthropic organization, The Duke Endowment, in 1924 and enabled the school’s transition to a university.

James B. Duke’s vision was to transform a regional liberal arts college into one of the world’s top institutions of higher education. And here we are.

Getting around and parking at Duke n VISITORS Visitor parking may be found in the parking garages, pay-lots, and parking meter areas around campus. Duke University and Medical Center strive to provide convenient and affordable parking for all visitors. Directional signage and friendly staff are available to assist visitors in locating available spaces in close proximity to buildings or venues of interest. A map of all campus parking lots, including visitor areas, is available online at maps.duke.edu.

n DUKE COMMUNITY MEMBERS Register Your Vehicle – Motor vehicles and motorcycles must be registered and display a valid parking permit to park anywhere on campus. University faculty, staff and students may register and purchase parking permits online at “Manage My Parking Account” at parking.duke.edu.

Parking Zones and Rates – Campus parking facilities are divided into zones. Individuals are not allowed to park in zones for which they do not have a permit except for certain hours and under certain circumstances.

n CAMPUS AND REGIONAL BUS ROUTES Duke Transit provides free and accessible transit service throughout the University and Medical Center campuses for students, staff, faculty, patients and visitors. Scheduled bus service is augmented by Duke Vans (919-684-2020), a dusk-todawn van service.

Duke’s libraries – make yourself at home A

s all Duke students know, the library will probably become most like a second home—a place to solve problem sets, discuss group projects, and most notably, eat pizza at 2 a.m.

The library, however, is not a place to be feared, but a necessary part of the Duke experience. The University’s library system is one of the top 10 private institution systems in the country—within which students can find any needed book, information or movie, as well as ample study space. Although centered around the Perkins, Bostock and Rubenstein library complex on West Campus, the school also boasts Lilly Library and the Music Library on East Campus, the Pearse Memorial Library at the Duke Marine Lab and separately administered libraries at the Divinity School, the Fuqua School of Business, the School of Law and the School of Medicine.

A CLOSER LOOK AT DUKE’S LIBRARIES Perkins Library – Perkins library is located on West Campus as part of the main library complex. One of the main features of Perkins is the Link, which contains spacious classrooms, seminar rooms and group study rooms to foster collaborative learning. The Office of Information Technology, located in the Link, offers computer assistance, software installations and equipment loans. The Writing Studio, located on the first floor of Perkins, allows students to discuss their writing concerns with trained tutors and receive help at any and all stages of the writing process. Von der Heyden Pavilion, attached to the front entrance of Perkins, is a glass-enclosed café offering coffee, snacks and a relaxing social and study space.

David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library – The recently renovated Rubenstein Library and Reading Room are located on the third floor of Perkins.

Holding more than 350,000 rare books and 10,000 manuscript collections, the library is also home to three specialized research centers, the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture, the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture, and the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Market History.

Bostock Library – Connected to Perkins as part of West Campus’s main library complex, Bostock Library offers a separate assortment of computer clusters, silent reading rooms, cubicles and group study spaces. Located on the first floor of Bostock is the newly built Rupert Commons for Research, Technology, and Collaboration—otherwise known as The Edge. The Edge is a dynamic study area containing workshop and presentation space, project

rooms, the Murthy Digital Studio, and the Brandaleone Family Lab for Data and Visualization Services.

Lilly Library Located on the main quad on East Campus, Lilly Library provides reference materials and online resources for first-year students as well as extensive film and book collections and a variety of study spaces.

The library also displays impressive pieces of artwork donated over the years, demonstrating a more refined and sophisticated décor.

Duke’s libraries contain an abundance of printers (both black & white and color), scanners, and copy machines, available to all Duke students through the ePrint system.

The library reference system encourages students to gain assistance by emailing the library through its website library.duke.edu. Students can also instant message librarians with questions by texting “DukeRef” to 265010.

A librarian will promptly respond and DukeRef can help locate source material from any location.

An Inside Look at Duke’s Campuses E

ach of Duke’s three campuses offers a unique social, living and dining experience. Students may have the opportunity to live on all campuses during their academic career, and many students will find themselves transported across all three during the course of a day.

n EAST CAMPUS Background: All first year students are required to live on East Campus. East Campus has fourteen residence halls, which are distributed among four neighborhoods.

Neighborhood one consists of Alspaugh, Bassett, Brown, and Pegram; neighborhood two consists of East (previously known as Aycock), Epworth, Giles, Jarvis, and Wilson; neighborhood three consists of Gilbert-Addoms and Southgate; and neighborhood four consists of Bell Tower, Blackwell and Randolph. While neighborhoods one and

two are centered around the main quad, neighborhoods three and four are located in what is known as the “backyard area”.

Living Essentials: Shower shoes are a definite must for all freshmen and some of the dorms, such as Blackwell, do not have an actual closet, but rather an area built into the wall to hang clothing and other belongings without any door to cover the area. If privacy is preferred, it may be beneficial for students to buy a shower curtain and rod to hang for a make-your-own closet. Students living in dorms without air conditioning will find it extremely useful to purchase their own fans. Also, although all residence halls contain communal kitchens, freshmen may want to purchase their own microwaves and mini refrigerators.

Perks: The goal of living on East Campus is to bring about a feeling of cohesion among all freshmen. Lilly Library is conveniently located on the main quad and across

West Campus is the main center of Duke.

from East Union, which consists of Marketplace and Trinity Cafe. Marketplace renovations will be completed in the fall, resulting in additional menu items and an expansion of vegan and vegetarian options.

History: East Campus was the site of Trinity College and the Women’s College from 1930-1972. It was not until 1955 that East Campus became an exclusively freshmen campus.

n WEST CAMPUS Background: Sophomores, juniors and seniors live on West Campus, and it is divided into seven residential quadrangles—Craven, Crowell, Wannamaker, Edens, Few, Keohane and Kilgo. Most academic classes are held on West Campus, and Duke classics such as the Chapel and Cameron Indoor Stadium are located there as well.

Living Essentials: Residence halls on West Campus also have their own communal kitchens, but students should still consider purchasing their own microwaves and mini refrigerators. Dorm living essentials are the same as those outlined for living on East Campus.

Perks: West Campus is the main center of Duke, home to the Chapel, Bostock and Perkins libraries, Cameron Indoor, Wallace Wade Stadium, and Wilson Gym. Students living on West Campus rarely have to worry about catching the bus for class, and can easily access restaurants and services at the Bryan Center. West Union is currently under construction, but will soon offer an array of social dining venues and study rooms.

History: Trinity College became Duke University in 1924 when James B. Duke started the Duke Endowment. As a result of the gift, Trinity College underwent an expansion, which created West Campus. The Duke Chapel opened on West Campus in 1930.

n CENTRAL CAMPUS Background: Central campus houses over 1,000 students and living options include one-bedroom, two-bedroom or three-bedroom apartments. Nine Panhellenic Association sororities, six fraternities and seven non-Greek selected living groups currently reside on Central Campus.

Living Essentials: Many apartments lack overhead lights in the bedrooms, so additional lamps and Christmas lights can be purchased to add some extra light to the rooms. Each apartment does have its own kitchen and bathroom(s), and all come with basic furnishings including a dining room table, chairs, a couch and a refrigerator. It’s important to stock up on kitchen and cleaning supplies, eating utensils, toilet paper and other essentials.

Perks: Amenities such as a swimming pool, basketball courts, a soccer field, a group study room and a small gym can be found on Central Campus. Uncle Harry’s General Store, a university grocery, is also conveniently located and allows students to purchase food, cooking supplies and other living necessities.

History: Central campus was built as temporary housing in the 1970s, but the apartments were renovated as part of a summer enhancement project that began in Summer 2010 and concluded during Summer 2014. Renovations last summer focused on interior upgrades such as new floors and paint jobs.

East Campus

(first-year students) First-year assignments are done on a random basis. Duke University is committed to encouraging students to embrace new experiences, and the random assignment process allows students to be exposed to a myriad of cultures, viewpoints, and value systems. Every effort is made to meet the preferences (roommate, room type, medical needs, etc.) for students returning all required materials by the deadline. All residence halls on East Campus house both men and women. Several halls have single-gender floors, as well. All bathrooms are designated by gender with the exception of guest bathrooms on the first floor.

You can find quirky gifts at the clothing store Vaguely Reminiscent or fine art at Zola Craft Gallery. Brightleaf Square also offers shopping options such as Schoolkids Records, James Kennedy Antiques and Vert & Vogue, a store selling artisanal clothing and accessories. And, the local mall is only 15 minutes away – Southpoint Mall - you can even catch a movie at the theater while you’re there.

n EXPLORE OUTSIDE OF DURHAM If you’re feeling adventurous, try hiking along the scenic Eno River. Two local favorites are the hiking trails at Few Ford Access and Durham’s city park, West Point on the Eno. You can also drive into Chapel Hill, just twenty minutes from Durham, and check out Franklin Street for more dining and shopping options.

‘Fun Home’ Picked for Class of 2019 Summer Reading The program is designed to give incoming students a shared intellectual experience with other members of their class.

L

abeled a “tragicomic” memoir, Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical novel “Fun Home” has been selected as Duke University’s Class of 2019 Common Experience summer reading book.

Published in 2006, this bestselling graphic book follows Bechdel’s relationship with her father, an English teacher and director of a funeral home, which she and her family call the “Fun Home.” Later, when Alison comes out as lesbian, she discovers her father was also gay, leaving Alison with a “legacy of mystery” to solve. “‘Fun Home’ is a book like no other. The author uses the unique graphic medium to tell a story that sheds a lot of

light on important and weighted issues like mental health, interpersonal relationships and human rights, all critical issues that students will become acquainted with in college,” said Ibanca Anand, a student member of the Duke Common Experience selection committee.

give incoming students a shared intellectual experience with other members of their class, with the summer reading choice as a key focal point. During orientation welcome week activities, students will discuss the book in small groups and as a larger community as part of their evening at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

The selection committee is comprised of students, staff and faculty.

“Every year we compile a list of Common Experience opportunities recommended by faculty, students and staff, and discuss the merits of each option. After a few rounds of readings and conversations, our committee reduces the list to five or six experiences,” said Jordan Hale, director of New Student Programs and co-chair of the selection committee. “We then reach out to the Duke community for their feedback.”

“Because of its treatment of sexual identity, the book is likely to be controversial among students, parents and alumni. I think this, in turn, will stimulate interesting and useful discussion about what it means, as a young adult, to take a position on a controversial topic,” he added.

A special printing of the book will be mailed this summer to members of the Duke Class of 2019.

Past summer reading selections include “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie, “Let the Great World Spin” by Colum McCann and “A State of Wonder” by Ann Patchet.

Lemur Center one of a kind S

ince coming to Duke from Yale University in 1966, the Lemur Center has housed and studied the world’s largest and most diverse captive collection of rare prosimian primates (mostly lemurs from the island of Madagascar). As Madagascar’s population is currently doubling every 25 years, there is ever growing pressure for land, mainly for slash-and-burn agriculture. Therefore, the protection and preservation of these truly unique primates requires a holistic approach involving multiple strategies both in Madagascar and internationally.

The Lemur Center houses over 250 animals made up of 20 species and subspecies of prosimians. During a walking tour of the Center visitors are introduced to representatives from the species housed there. The protected enclosures and captive breeding programs are designed to enable researchers from around the world to study these unique animals, visitors to learn about these critically endangered primates, and for students to learn about primatology and conservation.

Unlike a zoo, visitors are not allowed to tour the Center unescorted, but rather are required to schedule appointments for a docent-guided walking tour of the facility.

ALMA MATER

‘Dear Old Duke’ O

riginally called the “Hymn to Trinity”, the Alma Mater was the work of one of Duke’s own when he was a senior in Trinity College. Robert H. James ‘24 said “I was inspired to write ‘A Hymn to Trinity’, a song that would show my gratitude and devotion to my College. And would express the feelings of my fellow students and others in the little world of Trinity.”

The first public singing was at the Flag Lowering where members of the Class of ’24 and their friends sang the song and the next year it was adopted as “Dear Old Duke”, the Alma Mater of Duke University.

Robert James was a native of Wilmington, North Carolina. He was a civilian professor of English, History, and government at the United States Naval Academy for twenty years. He also taught at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the University of the City of New York.

During World War II Mr. James was a naval officer and was awarded the Victory Medal and the Navy Medal. He passed away on September 26, 1982, in Wilmington. A ceremony was held in 1982 to dedicate a plaque in lasting tribute of Robert Henry James.

Global Ed offers infinite opportunities A

pproximately 40 percent of Duke undergraduates study abroad by the time they graduate. Still, some students do not realize how easy it can be to make room for study abroad in their academic schedules.

Duke’s Global Education Office for Undergraduates (GEO) offers 30 of its own summer and 17 of its own semester study abroad and domestic programs. Students may also choose from over 150 summer, semester, and academic-year approved programs around the world, including programs in the United States. There are study away options for all major, minor, and certificate programs.

Typical reasons students might choose to study away include building upon coursework started on Duke’s campus or exploring a specialization within their major. Paul Paparella, assistant director of the GEO, confirmed that students benefit from valuable pre-professional opportunities that often coexist with study away sojourns. The GEO has established several forms of collaboration with the Duke Career Center to help students translate the connections between their study away experiences and post-graduation employment prospects.

“The highlight of my time abroad was meeting new people from all over the world, sharing thoughts and ideas with them, reflecting on our adventures, and learning about their cultural backgrounds. This has encouraged me to continue

Amanda Kelso, Executive Director of GEO, noted that Duke’s study abroad programs stand out compared to those at other universities because of the stellar quality of the Duke faculty leaders. Students are able to engage with faculty on a daily basis, developing personal and academic relationships with experts in the field. These relationships often continue when participants return to campus.

“Not only do students benefit from faculty contact during the actual program, but for many, the relationship extends after the study abroad experience to classrooms and research projects back at Duke,” Kelso said. “Participating in a Duke-In program is an excellent way to ensure that your study abroad experience has a connection to your studies.”

Kelso added that Duke also offers financial aid and several merit scholarships for its study abroad programs. Financial aid is available on a semester basis for the full program budget. Financial aid is also available for up to two summer programs.

“It’s all about giving students options, while still offering a solid, concentrated and unique academic experience,” Kelso said.

She noted that students should stay tuned for new programs currently under development for future years, including, Duke Engineering in Ghana, Duke in Aix-en-Provence, and Duke in Bologna.

The Duke Lemur Center is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Jovian, the celebrity lemur for the hit children’s show Zoboomafoo lived at the Lemur Center before passing away this past year.

Duke student basketball fans are known as the Cameron Crazies, and for good reason. In order to attend the home game against University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some Duke students brace the cold and camp out in K-ville for almost 2 months.

Ensembles & Performance Opportunities

Chamber Music Ensembles, coordinated by Jonathan Bagg, explore the repertoire for string quartet, piano trio, saxophone quartet, and other combinations. Groups receive weekly coachings with a member of the performance faculty in preparation for a public performance. The focus is on in-depth study of one or two complete works, allowing students to develop and refine their ensemble skills.

The Duke Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Brown, has a rich history of excellence. The ensemble performs at least two concerts each semester with guest artists noted for their high level of artistic achievement. Last year’s guests included bassist Ron Carter and vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Guest artists for 2015-16 include guitarist Mark Whitfield. Small group Jazz Combos provide additional opportunities.

The Duke Chorale, directed by Rodney Wynkoop, is a concert and touring choir of 50 singers. This year’s annual Spring Break tour will go to Florida. The 201516 season will include a concert on Family Weekend, a holiday concert in Duke Chapel, and Verdi’s Requiem with the Duke Chapel Choir in April. Rehearsals are 7:30-9:30 pm Tuesday & Thursday. The 20-voice Chamber Choir rehearses 9:30-10:30 pm Tuesday.

The Duke New Music Ensemble [dnme], coordinated by Benjamin Daniels, brings 20th and 21st century music to the fore, including new works by Duke graduate composers.

The Duke Collegium Musicum is devoted to the performance of early music, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance motets and madrigals, and Baroque sonatas and cantatas. Opportunities exist for singers and those who would like to perform in viol or recorder consorts, or on other early instruments. The Collegium Musicum rehearses once a week for two hours.

The Duke Djembe Ensemble, directed by Bradley Simmons, offers an exciting opportunity for students to develop skill in the art of West African drumming.

The Djembe Ensemble memorizes each rhythm, just as the Mandinque people have for hundreds of years.

Applied Music lessons are available for instruments & voice. Students may take one-hour weekly lessons (half course) or half-hour lessons (quarter course). Qualified juniors and seniors may pursue Independent Study in Performance, a full course culminating in a recital.

Open to all Duke students.
