Undergraduate student body elects DSG vice presidents, senators

by Hayley Trainer THE CHRONICLE

The undergraduate student body elected Duke Student Government vice presidents, senators and class council representatives for the 2014-2015 academic year Thursday evening. A total of 2,370 students voted, an increase of 551 students from last year’s election. The voting closed at 10 p.m. Thursday, and the results were released at 2:15 a.m. Friday. Attorney General Syed Adil, a sophomore, noted that the results took more than four hours to interpret because of the large number of students who

voted and the ranking system that is used in instant-runoff voting. “This election is notoriously long,” Adil said. “It takes a lot of time to make sure that every vote is counted correctly.” Adil previously told The Chronicle there had ben a glitch in the technology system and he was “tallying by hand,” but he later said there was no glitch. The Board of Elections met to certify the results at 2 a.m. Friday. Three of the five board members met in person and the other two members called in. Sophomore Keizra Mecklai was elected vice president of equity and outreach.

Freshman Zachary Gorwitz was elected vice president of residential life. Sophomore Tucker Albert was elected vice president of social culture. Junior David Robertson was elected vice president of Durham and regional affairs. Junior Ellie Schaack was elected vice president of facilities and the environment. Junior Ray Li was elected vice president of academic affairs. Sophomore Billy Silk was elected vice president of services. “I’m really excited to keep working on a lot of projects for this year, so the continuity is going to be great,” said Li, who served as vice president of academic af-

fairs this past year as well. “You’re going to want to do a lot more than you’ll have time for, but you’ll want to get as much done as you can.” The Class of 2015 elected Jacob Zionce and Cynthia Wang as senators for academic affairs, Cameron Tripp as senator for residential life, Johnathan Hill-Rorie as senator for equity and outreach and Russell Crock as senator for social culture. Bret Lesavoy was elected senior class president, and Kenai McFadden was elected senior class vice president. See DSG ELECTIONS, page 3

New innovation and entrepreneurship certificate to be offered by Yiyun Zhu THE CHRONICLE

Arts and Sciences Council members approved a new innovation and entrepreneurship certificate Thursday. Of 24 council representatives, 18 voted in favor of the certificate proposal that was first put forward last year. As the first experiential learning certificate, the program is designed to teach students about entrepreneurship through hands-on involvement with projects. Additionally, the program aims to enhance students’ ability to address complex problems through interdisciplinary work. “Because of the ways in which we have been challenged to think about the problems really thoughtfully, [the faculty] have really enabled us to come forward with this proposal,” said Cathy Clark, adjunct professor of social entrepreneurship at Fuqua School of Business. Clark added that students are excited about learning entrepreneurship skills, and the certificate will create an interdisciplinary link between their major and the real world. The overall goal of the certificate is to help students turn ideas into actions and

The Class of 2016 elected Brian Hopkins as senator for residential life, Jay Ruckelshaus and Kshipra Hemal as senators for equity and outreach, Eric Lam as senator for facilities and the environment and Nick Andrade and Neel Desai as senators for Durham and regional affairs. go through the process of realizing an idea, said Eric Toone, vice provost and director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. Some faculty voiced concerns over the purposes of the new certificate as described in the proposal. “This is the vaguest proposal I’ve ever seen,” said Ara Wilson, associate professor of women’s studies and cultural anthropology. “I don’t see any academic rationale and what kind of liberal art components there are.” Dean of Academic Affairs Lee Baker noted that the curriculum committee has explored similar questions, and has felt that it integrated many disciplines and satisfied that intellectual bar for a certificate. Wilson also asked whether the certificate was just offering a chance for students to generate income from innovation. Clark said that the application process and strong advising component would help them identify students for the program. “If a student’s only purpose is to generate income from innovation, this program is not for them,” she said. Clark noted that some courses listed in the certificate program overlap with other

existing departments. “Why can’t these courses be covered in public policy or environmental science?” said Micaela Janan, associate professor of classical studies. Baker added that certificates are specifically interdisciplinary pathways of study, which cannot be accomplished in one department or another. He also noted that the bursting demand for Markets and Management Studies would likely be reduced by this new certificate program, which he hopes could ease some of the pressure MMS currently has. “This certificate lets students really invest in a sustained project with the understanding that those experiences are in between the sandwich of elective courses,” Baker said. “It provides more coherence between their curricular and their co-curricular.” In other business: The council continued its discussion on online teaching, a year after it voted down a proposal to enter the 2U online consortium and a week after the consortium came to an end. Chantal Reid, assistant professor of the

practice of biology and moderator of a faculty forum on online education, presented information gathered from the forum to the council. The online faculty forum, open from February to end of March, did not garner as much faculty participation as expected. Approximately 19 percent of the 971 faculty members visited the site, Reid said. Discussions in the forum centered on topics such as online technologies, Duke-originated online courses for credit, and non-Duke online courses for credit. Faculty expressed mixed opinions of effectiveness and mechanisms of online teaching, with concerns over maintaining the integrity of online courses and interests in preserving the quality of online teaching, said John Brown, assistant professor of the practice of music. Revisions of the council’s bylaws, especially those on council representation and voting, will mostly likely be discussed late in Fall 2014, said Thomas Robisheaux, chair of the council and Fred W. Schaffer Professor of History. Robisheaux added that the Duke Kunshan University search committee for nonDuke faculty has finished its search process.

class president and Bella Kwai was elected junior class vice president. The Class of 2017 elected Tara Bansal and Emre Sonmez as senators for academic affairs, George Mellgard and Shaker Samman as senators for residential life, Dustin Hadfield and Eric Musselman as senators for equity and outreach, Annie Straneva as senator for facilities and the environment, Pritanka Venkannagari and John McMichael as senators for services, Zachary Dukoff

and Tanner Lockhead as senators for Durham and regional affairs and Steven Soto for senator of social culture. RJ Grant was elected sophomore class president and Tristan Haas was elected sophomore class vice president. The referendum for several amendments to the DSG constitution passed with 84.36 percent of students voting in its favor. According to the email sent by DSG to undergraduate students Thursday

morning, “the amendments transfer the authority to issue Executive Orders from the appointed Cabinet to the elected Executive Board, eliminate the automatic veto of legislation that is neither signed nor expressly disapproved by the President, remove specific rules for Affiliates and residential government, require the Judiciary to sit as a full bench instead of in panels in all cases, and clarify that the Senate may not compel the Judiciary to take a certain action.”
