Blue Devils ready for rematch with No. 1 Syracuse

The Blue Devils do not have much time to lick their wounds following their defeat in Chapel Hill.

No. 5 Duke will square off with topranked Syracuse in a highly-anticipated rematch Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m., less than 48 hours after the Blue Devils fell to North Carolina. The contest against the Orange completes the brutal stretch of four games in eight days.

“We have to come in tomorrow and get the game plan for Syracuse and try to wipe this one off,” redshirt sophomore forward Rodney Hood said. “A really good team is coming in and we have to be ready.”

Although Syracuse (25-1, 12-1 in the ACC) has the advantage of some extra rest, having played its last game on Tuesday, the Orange are also coming off of a tough loss. For the third consecutive game, Syracuse needed a shot at the buzzer to keep its perfect record in tact. Point guard Tyler Ennis answered the call against then-No. 25 Pittsburgh and forward C.J. Fair was up to the task against N.C. State, but the shots wouldn’t fall for the Orange against Boston College, as their perfect record was shattered with a 62-59 overtime loss.

Second-half drought dooms Duke

ChAPel hill—They had to wait eight extra days, but rodney hood and Jabari Parker wasted little time finding the scoring column in the Duke-north Carolina rivalry. it wasn’t enough. no. 5 Duke endured an 8:41 span without a field goal as it watched an 11-point second-half lead slip away late in a 74-66 loss to north Carolina at the Dean e. Smith Center Thursday night. Marcus Paige scored all 13 of his points in the second half and leslie McDonald added a game-high 21 for the Tar heels, who have now won eight straight after starting 1-4 in ACC play. in that fateful 8:41 drought, the Blue Devils (21-6, 10-4 in the ACC) misfired on 13 consecutive shots, allowing north Carolina to trim a 51-40 lead to 53-51 with 6:26 remaining. But as frigid as the offensive results were, it was a porous second-half Duke defense that allowed the Tar heels (19-7, 9-4) to fight their way back into the game.

“We were giving them a lot of easy looks and a lot of easy shots,” sophomore rasheed Sulaimon said. “We didn’t fight in the second half.... This was a primetime game, marquee matchup. nobody’s going to use [fatigue] as an excuse. We just didn’t show up in the second half.”

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said his team was missing an “it” factor after halftime as north Carolina rode the wave of its raucous home crowd. “it just felt that we didn’t have the life that we needed to have,” Krzyzewski said. “‘it.’ We didn’t have ‘it,’ whatever the hell that thing is. in the second half ‘it’ wasn’t in our huddle.”

After scoring the first 14 points of last year’s 69-53 win in Chapel hill, the Blue Devils found themselves on the other side of a 6-0 score just one minute into the game.

Duke committed four turnovers before it made a field goal, but had just one giveaway the rest of the half while forcing the Tar heels into nine. in their introductions to the Duke-north Carolina rivalry, the duo of hood and Park-

Duke went 8:41 in the second half without a field goal, allowing North Carolina to claw its way back into the game. er accounted for 21 of Duke’s 37 first-half points. hood brought the Blue Devils back from the early hole with 11 points in the half’s first eight minutes. When the redshirt sophomore picked up his second foul with 12:07 remaining, he handed the reins to Parker, who got a number of high-percentage looks just before halftime, heading to the locker room with 10 points, five rebounds and a seven-point lead for the Blue Devils. Parker finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while hood tallied 16 points but didn’t record a board.

Duke’s guard trio of Sulaimon, Tyler Thornton and Quinn Cook did all they could to frustrate Paige in the opening frame. The Tar heels’ leading scorer was held scoreless before intermission, committing three turnovers and attempting just two shots. Paige’s backcourt mate, the rivalry veteran McDonald, picked up the slack for the Tar heels, scoring 11 first-half points on

Foul trouble became an issue for the Blue Devils trying to contain a bulky north Carolina frontcourt. Amile Jefferson picked up three fouls in the first 20 minutes and by the 14:12 mark in the second period, hood, Thornton and Marshall Plumlee had joined him. Whether tentative due to the foul situation or simply undersized, the Blue Devils were handled on the boards 43-30, the first time Duke has been outrebounded by double digits since a Jan. 11 loss at Clemson.

James Michael McAdoo made the rebounding margin hurt, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards. Thirty-six of north Carolina’s 74 points came in the paint. on the surface, the shooting numbers closely paralleled those from Duke’s 69-67 win against Maryland—the Blue Devils were 5-for-22 from beyond the arc Thursday after going 5-of-24 against the Terrapins. But for Krzyzewski, comparisons between the two games ended there.

“There are no similarities [to the Mary- Mike Krzyzewski said it was the lack of an intangible “it land game],” Krzyzewski said. “We played with great emotion against Maryland, otherwise we would’ve lost.... You’re not going to beat [north Carolina] without two halves that are worthy of winning, and we played one half that was worthy of winning.”

Despite the shooting woes, hood said Duke was able to get the shots it wanted, even as the Tar heels rotated between manto-man defense and an extended 1-3-1 zone.

Some point-blank misses by Parker and Jefferson kept the momentum in north Carolina’s corner, and some good looks from distance continued to rim out.

“Sometimes you feel a little tight because the ball’s not going in—that’s just maturing,” hood said. “We got all the shots we wanted to the whole entire game. They were right there.” in a second half fragmented by foul calls, the Blue Devils lost their offensive rhythm, allowing the Tar heels to regain momentum. J.P. Tokoto slammed home a Desmond hubert miss with 10:27 left to cut the Duke lead to 53-49. A layup by McAdoo tied the score at 60 with 4:14 to go, prompting a timeout by Krzyzewski to stop the bleeding. it didn’t work, as McDonald buried a jumper to give north Carolina its first lead since of the half.

The fouls continued to pile up for Duke—Parker, Thornton, Jefferson and Plumlee all had four fouls heading into the final four minutes. A much-maligned freethrow shooting team most of the season, the Tar heels started the game by missing seven of their first eight attempts. The crowd even gave a mock cheer when Tokoto made two in a row. From there, the Tar heels made 19-of-23 while Duke only got to the line 12 times in the contest, converting on just five attempts.

Freshman nate Britt showed no nerves in the final minute, knocking down four free throws to help the Tar heels ice the game away. north Carolina students stormed the floor after the victory, which ended a two-game home skid against the Blue Devils.

With less than 48 hours to absorb the loss and prepare to face no. 1 Syracuse Saturday night, Krzyzewski warned that his team needs to find the missing intangible—quickly. “if we don’t [find ‘it’], we’re going to get beat on Saturday,” he said.

Can the Blue Devils find the ‘it factor?’

ChAPel hill—“There was something missing,” Mike Krzyzewski said after Duke’s 74-66 loss to north Carolina. “it” was missing.

Going forward, the question the Blue Devils have to answer: Can they find “it?” “‘it.’ We didn’t have ‘it.’ Wherever the hell that thing is, in the second half, ‘it’ wasn’t in our huddle,” Krzyzewski said. “We looked tired. We didn’t have life. no matter what we did in a timeout, we just didn’t have that spark. That spark, the anger, the emotion—the thing that you have to have to match what their crowd, their team is doing.” it’s not as if this is a team lacking the talent or pieces. Jabari Parker may be the best player in the country. rodney hood may join him in the nBA draft’s lottery. There is good depth behind them with rasheed Sulaimon, Quinn Cook, Tyler Thornton, Andre Dawkins, Amile Jefferson and Marshall Plumlee all filling various roles.

But Thursday wasn’t the first time “it” was missing. The Blue Devils certainly didn’t have “it” against Clemson, when they led by six at half and ultimately lost by 13. Same goes for the loss to notre Dame, when Duke led by 10 with 11:35 left.

This time the Blue Devils led 51-40 with 15:07 remaining. Slowly, the Tar heels climbed back into the game. The crowd—which stormed the court after the win—grew louder, and north Carolina had “it.”

“They wanted it more,” Quinn Cook said.

“They wanted it more,” Tyler Thornton said.

Thornton, one of the team’s three captains, said the team didn’t fight, attributing that in part to the team’s youth. lacking “it” affects a team all over the court. Duke gave up too many offensive rebounds and easy layups, Thornton said. Krzyzewski noted the

But what is “it” other than the intangible fiber that defines great Duke teams? “it’s a part of our Duke tradition,” Thornton said. “Duke teams in the past, situations that we were in, they would’ve pushed through and fought through what we did.”

Perhaps most optimistically for Duke, the players have shown they have “it.” Krzyzewski noted a team can have “it” and still lose—that’s exactly what happened when the Blue Devils lost to Syracuse. no game this season, win or loss, showed more why the Blue Devils are national championship contenders than when they fell in overtime to the orange. were in critical foul trouble. They were playing in front of a record-setting crowd at the Carrier Dome and had every reason to fold. But they didn’t. They sent the game to overtime and fought to the bitter end. There was no questioning if Duke wanted that game as much as Syracuse. And if the Blue Devils play with that verve in a given game, they will beat any team in country more often than not. “it was a great game. i think both teams were deserving of winning. Both teams played with so much heart,” Krzyzewski said after that Syracuse loss.

The 2010 national championship team also showed its “it” factor in a loss.

The Blue Devils lost 79-72 to Maryland in the penultimate game of the regular season, but like the Syracuse loss, they did the right things. in the end, Grevis Vasquez just hit one too many shots. in the defeat, Duke showed a resilience that is required if you want to go all the way in the Big Dance. “it was a heck of a game. i thought both teams played their heart out,” Krzyzewski said after that defeat to Maryland.

Sound familiar?

And that’s good news for this Duke team.

They have “it.” They just need to find “it.”

That, though, is no easy task. Unlike last year’s team that went undefeated in non-conference play, this year’s team isn’t led by three seniors in Seth Curry, ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee. losses, easy and tough ones, were inevitible with this year’s team.

But this year’s team is so immensely talented, that if they find “it” and show “it” on a regular basis, Duke may be the best team in the country. otherwise, a head coach may remain disappointed.

“That’s to me the disappointing thing: i’m not afraid to lose, and respect people who beat us, but i’d like to have done more in the second half,” Krzyzewski said. “i’m walking out of here frustrated not with the loss, but the fact that we didn’t ante up the way that we should.”

look forward to playing against another team that pushed it to the limit—Duke. “i don’t think i’ve been involved in a better game in here that i can remember, where both teams played at just a high level,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said following his team’s Feb. 1 overtime win against the Blue Devils.

“You can have close games, and exciting games, but i don’t think i’ve seen a game where there are two really good defensive teams and its 91-89. Both teams just went after it. i can’t say enough about the quality of this game.”

need to stay out of foul trouble—something that has haunted the Blue Devils in a number of their losses. Jabari Parker and Tyler Thornton both fouled out in a loss to Kansas on nov. 12. Thornton was disqualified against Arizona nov. 29. in Duke’s first meeting with the orange, Parker, Amile Jefferson and Andre Dawkins all fouled out. no Duke player was disqualified against north Carolina, but Parker, Jefferson, Thornton, hood and Marshall Plumlee all played with four fouls late in the second half. “i have to stop getting so many silly fouls in the first half,” hood said after picking up four fouls for the fifth time in his last eight games. “They kind of hurt us defensively—hurt me defensive-

ly—not being able to be as physical as i am. it’s just how the game is called, and we have to play through adversity.”

Despite coming off a loss and facing the nation’s top team, Duke has reasons for confidence. The Blue Devils are riding a 30-game win streak at Cameron indoor Stadium—a venue that is sure to rival the Carrier Dome despite being just a fraction of the size. Point guard Quinn Cook seems to finally be out of his funk after scoring 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting against north Carolina. Parker has scored 15-plus points in seven straight, grabbing at least eight rebounds in each

of those contests. Duke also can enter this game with the confidence of knowing it can score against Syracuse’s smothering zone defense after pouring in 89 points against the orange in a hostile environment.

With neither Duke nor Syracuse keen on enduring its first two-game losing streak of the season, the table is set for another invigorating game in what is becoming one of college basketball’s best new rivalries. “i learned one thing—the way they play against us, when we go down there we’re going to have to have an unbelievable night,” Boeheim said.
