Duke doesn’t get the chance to fence in front of a home crowd often—it happens once a year to be exact—but the Blue Devils made the most of their opportunity this weekend at the annual Duke home Meet.

With strong performances from the epee and foil squads, the no. 10 men’s team rolled to a 4-1 record, and the women’s team was able to rebound from its loss to no. 8 Temple to defeat its other four opponents. in addition to continuing the hot streak both teams have been on in the past three weeks, the Blue Devils were also able to accomplish the most important goal for any Duke team: defeat north Carolina.

“This year, we beat [the Tar heels] pretty solidly, so we were all really psyched about that,” junior epee eugene Chung said. “north Carolina is by far the most fun. We had two huge crowds. That kind of energy that we feel at the Duke home Meet is not replicated anywhere else, so i’m sure the seniors really loved it as their last time.”

The men’s team—ranked for the first time all season—had another impressive showing Saturday as they stormed to a 4-1 record. in the past three weeks of play, the men’s team has been nearly unstoppable, racking up a 17-3 record between the Philadelphia invitational, northwestern Duals and this weekend’s

Title defense begins with comeback victory

Duke started 2-4 in its run to an NCAA title in 2013. The 2014 Blue Devils also got off to a slow start in their first step toward title defense—this time they overcame it much more quickly.

A combined 11 points from seniors Jordan Wolf and Josh Dionne allowed No. 1 Duke to overcome a slow start to top Jacksonville 10 16-10 in its seaJAX DUKE 16 son-opener Saturday at Koskinen Stadium. After allowing the Dolphins to jump out to an early lead, the Blue Devils dominated the final three quarters en route to a convincing win.

“The ball wasn’t really going our way too much [at first],” Wolf said. “Give Jacksonville credit, bunch of great shots.

We were being a little impatient on offense but we’re a senior-laden team.

We’ve been here for big games and small games, whatever you want to say. We just kept fighting.”

After being held scoreless for the majority of the first quarter and falling behind 3-0 to the Dolphins (0-1), freshman Thomas Zenker started the scoring for the Blue Devils (1-0), the first of what would be seven unanswered goals for Duke.

“It gets that monkey off everybody’s back,” Dionne said of the Zenker’s goal.

“You see everybody’s face light up. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Zenker smile that big, so to see him tally his first one and kind of calm everybody down… it was kind of just that relaxing point.”

Duke’s offense taking control allowed the team’s defense to settle down. Led by

redshirt senior Casey Carroll—playing in his first collegiate game since 2007—and a new cast of defensive characters—the Blue Devils grew on the defensive end as the game wore on and took a lot of the pressure off junior goalie Kyle Turri. As Duke took its 7-0 run to seize control of the contest, the Blue Devil defense held Jacksonville scoreless for 21:25.

“Defensively, we were prepared and we knew exactly what they were going to do,” Duke head coach John Danowski said. “But this is Casey Carroll’s first game since 2007. He needs to play to see the speed of what’s going on. This is Jamie Ikeda’s first start. This is Brian Dailey’s first time playing with a short stick…. So with all those things being said, the game changes when it’s a game and its not practice anymore.”

Senior faceoff specialist Brendan Fowler also had to overcome a slow start.

Fowler lost the first two faceoffs of the contest to Jacksonville redshirt freshman Jet Harding, which led to two Dolphin scores. Fowler would recover, taking 18-of-28 faceoffs in the game.

“I wanted to pop everyone forward and score,” Fowler said. “I wanted to go out there, get the first one and score in five seconds. I just kept wanting to go forward and once I kind of figured out, like alright, I [have to] get back to See m. lacrosse, page 6

Maurer continues tear as Blue Devils top Louisville

It will take more than a four-goal deficit to shake the sixth-best team in the country.

Louisville jumped out to a 4-0 lead in its season-opener against No. 6 Duke, but the Cardinals could 11 not fend off a Blue LOU comeback.

DUKE 14 Devil Duke knocked off Louisville 14-11 Sunday at Koskinen Stadium in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.

“We felt pretty prepared coming into the game,” head coach Kerstin Kimel said.

“When you’re someone’s first game, it can be challenging, so I thought we did a good job with that.”

Duke (2-0) trailed for more than 20 minutes of play until back-to-back unassisted goals by senior Kerrin Maurer gave the Blue Devils the lead. Carrying the ball behind the goal and around the crease, Maurer edged two shots past defenders within a minute to bring the score to 6-5.

Another goal by Maurer and a second by teammate Sydney Peterson gave Duke an 8-6 lead at halftime.

“You kind of have to have a short memory,” Peterson said. “Yeah, they just scored, but you have to just go to the next draw, be ready, and take it to them, and we did a good job of coming back.”

After the Blue Devils established the lead, they had to hold onto it tightly, never leading by more than three goals in the game. Louisville (0-1) fired 27 shots at the

Duke defense, which answered with key defensive stops and 11 saves from sophomore goalie Kelsey Duryea.

“The biggest thing is that I think that at least three or four of those [early] goals were free position goals,” Kimel said. “You can’t be not marking someone within three seconds, and that’s what we were getting called for, and so that is a pretty easy adjustment… and so they did that and obviously that wasn’t a problem.”

The Blue Devil attack found ways to capitalize on the teams’ defensive stops. Maurer dominated the scoring effort, netting her 11th goal in just two games with just more than four minutes left to play. But the Duke offense relied on more than one attacker, spreading its 14 goals across seven different players.

“I think it really helps, especially on the scouting reports for other teams,” said Peterson when asked about her scoring team’s balance. “They have a really hard time scouting every single one of the seven of us on attack, so it helps to be more well-rounded, and if Kerrin’s face guarded, we can get it to other players and keep the scoring going.”

Louisville kept the contest close, led by senior Nikki Boltja, who finished with five goals and an assist. At the beginning of the second half, Boltja and teammate Anna Kopecka answered an early second-half Duke goal with two of their own to make it 9-8. Converting a free position shot three minutes later, the Cardinals tied the score at 10-10 to finish off a 4-1 second-half run.

“We knew Louisville was a really tough team. I mean we know they’re really well conditioned, so we just tried to run them as hard as we could,” Peterson said. “I think we’re not so much a ‘rah-rah’ team. We’re very much more composed, which I think helped us at the end, especially in this close game.”

Blue Devils overcome slow start to blow out Boston College

CheSTnUT hill, Mass.—After barely escaping Conte Forum with a 62-61 win against Boston College last year, Duke built off a four-point halftime lead and dominated the eagles in the second half to take home the easy win.

Thanks to one of the most prolific performances of Jabari Parker’s freshman year and a resurgent scoring effort from Quinn Cook, the Blue Devils cruised to a 89-68 victory against Boston College.

“We were unbelievably concerned about this game,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “i think [Boston College] has been playing well. They should have won at notre Dame. They had a bad half of shooting against Virginia and then in the second half came back. i thought they played well, until we played outstanding defense in the second half.”

Parker asserted his will over the Boston College defense for the entirety of the second half. The freshman had a double-double—his eighth of the season—with more than 15 minutes left in the game and finished with 29 points and 16 boards.

“Jabari was a monster today,” Krzyzewski said. “he wasn’t rewarded sometimes on his aggressiveness on the offensive boards with the finishes, otherwise it could have been a 35- or 36-point night.

But he was sensational tonight.”

The Blue Devils (19-5, 8-3 in the ACC) jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game behind two 3-pointers from rodney hood and

one from Tyler Thornton, but Boston College (6-17, 2-8) evened the game at 16 apiece thanks to the hot hand of sophomore guard oliver hanlan, who had eight of the eagles’ first 16 points.

The Blue Devils continued to rely on the long ball throughout the first half, knocking down 6 of their 12 attempts before heading into the locker room.

Cook—who has struggled in league play, shooting just 31 percent from beyond the arc in ACC games—contributed two 3-pointers of his own before picking up his second foul with 2:44 left to play and heading to the bench.

Parker and hood led the way on the offensive end for Duke in the first half, combining for 19 points on 8-of17 shooting. While hood struck from the outside, Parker utilized his size advantage over the smaller Boston College defenders to assert his will in the paint, pairing his 10 points with seven rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.

The Blue Devils went into the locker room at halftime nursing a 39-35 lead. “i thought their whole team played well in the first half,” Krzyzewski said.

“They could have been winning at halftime.... But the way we started off the second half was outstanding.”

Parker picked up right where he left off early in the second half, taking a feed inside and turning to the baseline for a two-handed slam. Then after a turnover by the eagles, the freshman took off on the fast break and converted a threepoint play to put Duke up 44-35.

The high-flying theatrics did not stop there.

After extending the lead to 49-38, Parker pulled down a defensive board and pushed the ball ahead to Sulaimon on the wing in transition. Sulaimon raced to the basket and dished the ball back to Parker via a no-look behind-theback bounce pass for an emphatic dunk to put Duke up by 13. Sulaimon would spend the remainder of the second half facilitating a series of spectacular slams from Parker. “our team needed something, that boost,” Parker said. “What i really wanted to do was to just be there for them, and then that spark got everybody going.”

The Blue Devils knocked down nine of their first 11 shots to open the second half, racing out to a 64-44 lead to effectively seal the game with more than 10 Duke used a strong defensive effort to open the second minutes left to play.

Cook continued his hot shooting in the second half as well, knocking down 5 of 7 3-pointers, including a contested fade away with the shot clock winding down to put the Blue Devils up 25 late in the half. The junior’s 21 points marked his highest total since his 22-point performance in a loss to notre Dame Jan. 4.

“Quinn has been struggling shooting, and he had a terrific game,” Krzyzewski said. “That was more like he was playing in December and november.” hanlan—who finished with 24 points, four rebounds and four assists—proved to be the lone bright spot for the eagles on an otherwise disappointing night in Chestnut hill. Duke dominated every aspect of the second half and made sure it did not have a repeat of last year’s closely contested matchup.

Parker pummels the Eagles en route to a career night

CheSTnUT hill, Mass.— Jabari Parker led the Blue Devils Saturday night in more ways than one. notching a career-high 29 points and 16 rebounds, Parker’s impact on Duke’s 89-68 win over Boston College is evident in the box score. But Parker’s role in his teammates’ performance was just as important in the Blue Devils pulling away from the eagles in the second half.

“Jabari was a monster today,” head coach Mike Kryrzewski said of the freshman. “he played more like a veteran.”

After nursing a single-digit lead over Boston College for most of the first half, the Blue Devils stormed out of the break, going on a 30-9 run in the first 10 minutes of the second period to put what had been a close game out of reach.

Parker’s seemingly endless array of dunks received most of the attention during this decisive stretch, and deservedly so. Parker had 14 of Duke’s 30 points during the run, and his ability to finish through double-teams and fouls frustrated his opponents and silenced the crowd at the Conte Forum. “he didn’t settle tonight—he made sure he got to the rim,” Boston College head coach Steve Donahue said of Parker. “[Duke] really worked it into him, and that’s a handful.”

What drew less attention was the impact Parker’s impressive inside play had for his teammates on the perimeter. Parker’s efficient play in the post—his career-high 29 points came on a 12-for-17 effort from the field, well above his season average of 47.1 percent—drew eagle defenders to the block and away from Duke’s guards. Sulaimon and Tyler Thornton, were largely able to setup on the perimeter and hit open looks from deep rather than needing to create space for their shots. “i got my good shots from my teammates, getting in the lane and kicking out,” Cook said. “i was just fortunate to hit a couple, and then i just got going.” eight of Cook’s points came during Duke’s run to start the second half, when the Blue Devils focused on running their offense through Parker in the post. The forward came out of the break energized, and demanded the ball from his teammates if he felt he had position on the block.

“They made sure they got a post touch almost every time,” Donahue said of the Blue Devils. “Parker hasn’t done much down low this year, to be honest with you, but i think he felt that he had an advantage.”

Parker’s intensity in the second half lifted his teammates’ play as well, as they reacted in kind and took advantage of a defense that became focused on stopping Parker.

“Jabari does a lot for us, especially when he is scoring like that,” Cook said.

“When he has that mentality, he’s the best in the country.”

Parker and the rest of the Blue Devil offense allowed Duke to open up its large lead after the break, and a second half focus on stopping the eagles’ two main scoring threats allowed the visiting squad to hold its decisive advantage. Cook and the rest of the Duke backcourt were able to slow down Boston College’s primary scoring threat in olivier hanlan, limiting the guard to nine points in the second half after allowing him to put up 16 in the first half. in the post, Parker handled the eagles’ ryan Anderson, keeping the forward below his season averages in both scoring and rebounding.

Duke’s second-half effort on defense was vital, but in the end it was overshadowed by Parker’s efficient and prolific scoring.

“Jabari was really difficult to handle,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “he was sensational.”

Blue Devils difficult stretch against UNC Duke tries for eighth straight against Tar Heels

The Blue Devils will kick off a grueling stretch of games with a clash at home against their arch rival.

No. 5 Duke will take on No. 13 North Carolina Monday at 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils will play four No. 13 UNC consecutive games vs. against teams ranked in the top 14 and will No. 5 Duke be looking to kick off the stretch by continuMONDAY, 7 p.m.

Duke has won seven straight games against North Carolina.

This season’s Tar Heel squad is led by players who have yet to play against the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils’ poise and experience will thus be pitted against the Tar Heels’ athleticism and youth.

Three of North Carolina’s top four scorers—guards Diamond DeShields and Allisha Gray and forward Stephanie Mavunga—are freshmen. The trio leads a team that scores 83.9 points per game and forces 21.4 turn-

overs per contest.

The Blue Devils (22-2, 9-1 in the ACC) will try to use their experience to counter North Carolina’s athleticism and control the pace of the game. Duke starts three seniors—Tricia Liston, Haley Peters and Richa Jackson—but junior center Elizabeth Williams will likely be the X-factor for Monday’s contest.

Williams—who has scored just 10 points total on eight field goal attempts in her last two games—allows Duke to play inside-out when she is demanding the ball in the paint.

Her ability to score against Mavunga and draw double teams could be huge against a North Carolina team that has struggled defensively.

The Tar Heels (17-6, 5-4) have lost three games in a row and have given up an average of 85 points per game during the stretch.

Duke’s ability to handle the Tar Heels’ fastpaced offense will likely hinge on its ability to take care of the ball. Since the season-ending injury to senior point guard Chelsea Gray and the recent shin injury that has kept senior guard Chloe Wells out of the last five games, Duke has struggled in that department.

The Blue Devils turned the ball over 15 times in the first half in their last contest against Clemson and saw the game slip away in their loss to No. 2 Notre Dame because of sloppiness with the ball. Like the Fighting Irish, North Carolina has the ability to punish Duke in transition if given the opportunity.

From the second quarter on, the Blue Devils showed why they are the No. 1 team in the nation. With the team’s first win of 2014 in the books, Danowski made a point of maintaining perspective on a long season.

“It’s so early. When I first got here, I don’t think we played until the last weekend in February and so… that’s two weeks less of practice to prepare,” Danowski said. “I think it was a great first test in that Jacksonville was emotional and well-prepared.”

The Blue Devils have a stiff test upcoming when they host No. 4 Denver—a team that has beaten the Blue Devils in each of the past three seasons—next weekend.

“Denver’s a great team,” Wolf said.

“They’ve had our number the last few years so this was a good game to have, give us some experience and get a little momentum going into next week.

But next week’s a really big game, and I think we’re up for it.”

ball over the heads of both teammates and opponents and directed her shot straight to the middle of the goal. From there, Duke dictated play until time expired, tacking on three more goals to seal the victory.

“We have a veteran team, and I think a veteran team should be able to come out against another top opponent and perform,” Kimel said. “I was proud of our girls after timeouts. We made good adjustments on the draw, good adjustments on the offense, good adjustments defensively—we should be able to do that because we’re not a bunch of youngsters.”

The Blue Devil squad will travel to Virginia to face Richmond and William & Mary on a weekend road trip. Neither team is ranked, but both programs have beaten Duke in the teams’ matchup history.

“When we play them early, they always get up for us. I think that’s [something] our girls are used to—when we play another team, everybody gets up for Duke, and we’ll expect a great effort from both of those teams,” Kimel said. “Having two games under our belt, we should be well positioned to go in there and play well.”

As a team we did well against Brandeis, we were a little overconfident which i think is why we fell.”

The women’s team was led by junior epee Sarah Collins, who posted a 10-1 record, and freshman foil Julia lee, who finished the day at 10-2. The pair’s performance helped to boost the team’s overall season record to 17-9 and keep the women’s team on a roll.

After a slow start to the season, the women’s team began to turn things

around at the Philadelphia invitational, where they went 3-2, and then last week’s northwestern Duals, where the team finished 8-4. With a 4-1 finish at home this weekend, the team seems to have found a focus that it lacked early in the season.

“At this level, it’s all mental,” Collins said. “it’s all where you’re at, where your team’s at, how you’re focusing and it’s hard to go to your first tournament and have that mental focus when you’re there. So i think that as the weeks go on, as the tournaments go on, our team’s getting more focused on what we’re doing.” in what was the most anticipated match

of the weekend for the fencers and fans alike, the Blue Devils overtook rival north Carolina in every facet of both contests en route to a 19-8 victory for the men and a 16-11 win for the women. For seniors, defeating the Tar heels in their final home meet was all too sweet.

“We’ve been beating them for the last couple years, which is awesome,” Chung said. “This year i’m sure for the seniors, especially. every year feels great to come out with a win.”

With two big meets looming in the next two weeks, the fencers are sure to have their sights set on continuing their recent success. But before anyone can

think ahead about upcoming meets, they will have to turn their attention to cleaning up Card Gym. “if everyone is here on the team, we hope that it takes only three-and-a-half hours,” Collins said. “it’s a very long process. it takes us two whole days to set up.” once cleanup is finally finished and the fencers have the Duke home Meet behind them, the underclassman will turn their attention to the Junior olympics, slated for next weekend. The underclassman who do not qualify will join the upperclassman and take the weekend to rest and prepare for the following week’s Temple Duals.
