‘Cuse comeback means Duke draw Bottorff

leads Duke to victory

The Orange scored their first goals in five games, coming back from two down to squeeze out a draw with the Blue Devils.

No. 16 Duke could not hold on to its 2-0 lead Sunday afternoon, settling for a DUKE 2 draw in its first-ever matchup with ACC CUSE 2 newcomer Syracuse at SU Soccer Stadium.

“It’s obviously disappointing when you’re up 2-0 at the half, and you worked hard to get the lead, to let it go,” head coach Robbie Church said. “I didn’t think we came out with the same kind of intensity as we did early in the match. We got a little sloppy with our passing.”

After losing 3-1 at No. 3 Wake Forest Thursday for their second straight loss, the Blue Devils (4-4-2, 1-2-1 in the ACC) looked as though they were ready to reverse their fortunes.

Duke opened up the scoring just 2:29 into the first half. Freshman midfielder Toni Payne managed to get a shot on goal off a turnover from the Orange. Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel reacted quickly enough to stop it but couldn’t hold on to it.

Senior forward Laura Weinberg, a leading goal-scorer for Duke last season, capitalized on the opportunity, collecting the rebound and slotting it into the far corner of the empty net to leave the Orange (4-5-1, 0-3-1) trailing 1-0.

Weinberg’s tally seemed especially important for a Duke offense that ranked 209th in scoring offense heading into this weekend’s road trip. After struggling to find the back of the net in her first eight contests, the game-opening goal marked her second in two games.

“We came out and played great,” Church said. “They worked hard, got a great goal early in the game. I thought it was a fantastic start.”

Just before the break, Duke’s other leading scorer of the 2012 season, redshirt senior Kim DeCesare, joined Weinberg in the scoring column to give Duke a comfortable two-goal lead.

After receiving a pass from senior defender Avery Rape, DeCesare chipped a shot over Anghel and into the back of the net for her third goal of the year.

Despite their promising start, the Blue Devils could not keep Syracuse off the scoreboard. After going 473 consecutive minutes without scoring, the Orange finally broke through on a set piece. Defender Maddie Iozzi lofted a

corner kick into the 18-yard box in the 53rd minute.

After one of the Syracuse players dummied the ball, it got by goalkeeper Ali Kershner and deflected off of DeCesare into the net although the goal was credited to Orange forward Stephanie Skilton, Church said.

“It was just an unfortunate goal. It happens sometimes,” he said. “It was just an own goal that gave them a lot of momentum at that point.”

Eleven minutes later, Syracuse capitalized on that momentum. In the 18-yard box, sophomore midfielder Jackie Firenze found a way to get a touch on a ball in heavy traffic and directed it into the goal to tie the game at two.

“It was just kind of a mad scramble in our six-yard box,” Church said. “We’ve got to do a little bit of a better job clearing that ball.”

Trying to regain the lead, Duke could not find the answers in the final third of the field. DeCesare put two more shots on goal in regulation, and junior Kelly Cobb put a shot on goal as well, but Anghel held strong. The Blue Devils headed into overtime with a slight 13-11 advantage in shots.

Duke dominated the first period of overtime but still couldn’t find the game-winner. The Blue Devils had three corner kicks, a shot blocked and another shot saved by Anghel, while keeping Syracuse off the stat line offensively.

Duke had fewer chances in the second overtime period, and following one final save from Anghel—who finished with nine—in the 108th minute, the Blue Devils exited the field with the draw.

“We just didn’t get a good final ball,” Church said. “We had one or two really good attacks in overtime, but we just didn’t do a good job of finishing it…. We just unfortunately weren’t able to find that third goal.”

Crushing the course record in her first race of the season, graduate student Juliet Bottorff led Duke to a convincing victory against Southeast region opponents N.C. State and North Carolina at the Adidas Challenge in Cary, N.C., Friday.

In a field of almost 200 athletes, all seven of Duke’s scoring runners crossed the finish line at WakeMed Soccer Park in the top 15 positions, turning in an average time of 17:14 for the 5,000-meter race, leaving their competitors far behind.

N.C. State finished second and North Carolina followed distantly in third, with average times of 17:31 and 18:17, respectively.

“It’s a good start and hopefully a base for us to train smarter and race better,” head coach Kevin Jermyn said. “I thought they ran tough, but I’d like to see them run a little bit more confidently and aggressively in the early going by being in a good position sooner in the race.”

Freshmen Wesley Frazier and Hannah Meier began the race conservatively, checking in at the 3,000-meter mark behind Megan Moye and Erika Kemp of N.C. State.

But as the race progressed, both Blue Devils held on to an even split while the Wolfpack lost the pace and fell behind. Coming in at 17:15.4 and 17:15.8, Frazier and Meier finished within a stride of each other in third and fourth place, respectively.

“They were probably more tentative at the start than I was envisioning they were going to be,” Jermyn said. “But the takehome from that is that for bigger races, we have to keep working on that in practices and be more mentally ready. It’s just that when you put 200 more people in front of you, it can get crowded and hard to move around them.”

Bottorff’s aggressive race was the exception to Duke’s overall hesitant starts.

Leading Joanna Thompson of N.C. State at 3,000 meters by four seconds, Bottorff picked up the pace and left Thompson almost half a minute behind her at the finish. Her time of 16:28.9 marks a new course record for the meet and a personal best by 30 seconds.

The next four Blue Devils across the finish line clinched the victory for Duke.

Freshman Haley Meier passed Elizabeth Whelan of North Carolina after trailing her for the first half of the race to finish seventh with a time of 17:31.3. Sophomore Anima Banks, junior Julianna Miller and senior Ashley Berry followed shortly behind her, rounding out the Duke scoring positions in ninth, 10th, and 12th, respectively.

With the fastest runners turning in the lowest number of points, Duke tallied a mere 24 points to N.C. State’s 38 and North Carolina’s 87. As the first-ranked team in the Southeast region, the Blue Devils See cross country, page 8

Blue Devils upset No. 16 Illinois

Duke capped off its nonconference slate in style, earning its first victory against a ranked opponent with a comeback win.

The Blue Devils defeated no. 16 illinois 3-1 Saturday night at Cameron indoor StadiILL 1 um. After dropping the first set 25-19, DUKE 3 Duke regrouped and came back to take the final three sets 27-25, 25-18 and 25-21 to top the Fighting illini for the first time in program history.

“After dropping that first set… we went into the locker room, talked about a few changes and came out here really fired up knowing our energy could really help us out,” junior outside hitter Jeme obeime said.

The action swung back and forth between the two teams in the first stanza. neither team held an advantage larger than two points until illinois (4-6) pulled away at 21-18 and went on to take the set 25-19.

But Duke head coach Jolene nagel said that the score did not reflect her squad’s play during the set. “[We] really played well in set one,” nagel said. “it was neck and neck the whole way until the end. We just made a few too many mistakes.” illinois recorded five blocks in the first set, but the Blue Devils (9-2) were able to open up their offense in the second set, holding the Fighting illini to just five blocks in the final three stanzas. “We just kept going to what was working. [Campbell] was having a great game,” obeime said. “We kept feeding her knowing she could put the ball down when we needed it.”

back-and-forth fashion as the first, but this time the Blue Devils found themselves on the right end of the scoreline. Duke trailed 19-16 until a crucial timeout called by nagel broke up illinois’ momentum.

Duke seized control coming out of the timeout, mounting a comeback to take a 23-22 lead. The Fighting illini went on to win two consecutive points and were a point away from taking a commanding two-set

lead, but the Blue Devils rallied and took the stanza 27-25.

“After game two, we… refocused. We talked about specifically what we wanted to focus on,” senior libero Ali McCurdy said. “We went back out there with the same game plan we’d started from the beginning, made a few adjustments, but really wanted to get the control back on our side.”

Duke trailed for the first half of the third stanza until senior middle blocker Chelesa Cook came up with two huge blocks giving the Blue Devils the lead at 16-15. Two consecutive blocks from obeime helped Duke close out the set and secure a 25-18 victory.

The Blue Devils never looked back from there, taking the fourth set 25-21 to seal the upset.

Following a victory against indiana Friday night, Duke takes this winning weekend in stride as it moves into ACC play next weekend. The Blue Devils have won 15 of their last 17 sets to close non-conference play, and they are currently on a five-match winning streak.

Although her team continues to string together wins, nagel said she is certain that the team’s work is not done. “i’m really proud of this group and how they have worked together to get to this point right now,” nagel said. “i think the neat thing about it is they’ve been coming into practice everyday and trying to get better. We need to continue with that mentality, and to really work to get better each day.

The ACC is tough.”

up and down game for Duke defense

For Duke’s defense, it was a tale of two halves Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium.

“We fought, we battled, and that’s the most encouraging thing,” redshirt senior cornerback ross Cockrell said.

The Blue Devils’ defensive unit had a trying first half against Pittsburgh (2-1, 1-1 in the ACC), allowing 37 points and 468 total yards in the opening 30 minutes. For comparison’s sake, Georgia Tech accrued 469 yards and scored 38 points in a blowout victory last week.

The Panthers could have had 41 points in the first half, but Duke (2-2, 0-2) blocked a 24-yard field goal, and Pittsburgh kicker Chris Blewitt missed an extra point. But despite its slow start, the team did not feel that a lack of intensity was the problem.

“We can’t work harder,” Blue Devil head coach David Cutcliffe said. “That team was about as cranked up as you could get. They were about to knock the locker room doors down.”

With intensity and energy ruled out as culprits for the disastrous first half, the only remaining explanation was that the Panthers simply outplayed Duke, a realization that both the players and coaches came to after the game. one of the biggest problem areas for the Blue Devils was matching up with Pittsburgh’s size up front, which allowed true freshman James Conner to rack up 144 rushing yards in the first half. “it was definitely frustrating,” redshirt senior defensive end Kenny Anunike said. “it was just pound the football, and just try to pound it down your throat. i think in the first half we, just came out a little bit slow.”

Although the defense was outplayed in the first half, the second half was a completely different story. Duke’s defensive unit allowed just 130 yards of total offense and 14 points, with all of the points coming in the third quarter.

Pittsburgh’s only points in the fourth quarter came via a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Anthony Gonzalez.

The Blue Devil unit that looked outmatched in the first half turned into the aggressors in the second, and helped pull the team within three points in the game’s closing minutes.

their resiliency in coming back in the second half, but argued that the team’s physical capabilities were the reason for the turnaround, not effort.

“You saw our defense in the second half,” Cutcliffe said. “[We] stymied them pretty well.

There was something there, and we’ll look at it. And it will be something—not just rah-rah energy. it will be something physical, something we’re doing better.”

Though the defense looked strong in the second half, the first half of action was not an anomaly. The Duke defense has struggled more often than not of late. in the last eight games the Blue Devils have played against FBS opponents—dating back to last season—Duke has allowed more than 550 total yards of offense in five of those contests. Two of the three games in which Duke allowed fewer than 550 yards came against Georgia Tech, who racked up 918 yards in the two contests combined, still a lofty total. The third game was a convincing defensive performance against a hapless Memphis offense that mustered 237 yards.

Duke showed Saturday the best and worst its defense has to offer, but the road ahead could be difficult. linebacker Kelby Brown and safety Dwayne norman both left the game against Pittsburgh with injuries, and fellow starting safety Corbin McCarthy did not play. norman’s injury could be problematic, the prognosis for Brown’s ankle injury is less clear.

A silver lining for this defensive unit is the play of freshmen defensive backs Breon Borders, Bryon Fields and Deondre Singleton, who all played significant minutes as Duke’s defense came to life in the second half.

“They bring a lot of athleticism, a lot of energy,” Cockrell said. “They can make plays, and that’s what we need in the secondary. We need to force turnovers, and we need to make tackles.”

Defense has been a problem for the Blue Devils of late, but an end to the struggles could be on the horizon if Duke can harness the magic they found in the second half of Saturday’s contest and put it forward to the remaining eight games of the season. “if you have players who are going to give up, who stop giving effort, then you have a problem,” Cockrell said. “But as long as everybody is going to battle and fight and continue to play as hard as they can, then i think we can do a lot of good things this year.”

Comeback attempt falls Around the short in ‘bizarre’ contest Acc

Allowing nearly 600 yards of offense and throwing four interceptions is not typically a part of the recipe for winning a football game. in a contest that head coach David Cutcliffe said was nothing short of “bizarre,” Duke managed to claw its way back from a deficit of 20 points or more twice and still had a chance to win the game in the closing minutes. “i told our squad that they represented the Duke football program well from the standpoint of how hard this team played for 60 minutes,” head coach David Cutcliffe said. “it may be the most unusual game that i’ve ever been a part of—off the top of my head it probably is.”

After redshirt junior quarterback Brandon Connette threw two picks in his first three pass attempts, Pittsburgh was set up with a short field for some easy first-quarter points. But it wasn’t until Panther quarterback Tom Savage flexed his muscles in the vertical passing game that Duke looked as though it would be in for a long afternoon.

Savage burned the Blue Devil defense on back-to-back plays, hooking up with Devin Street and Tyler Boyd in the span of 56 seconds to give Pittsburgh a 27-7 advantage.

Despite three second-quarter touchdowns from Jamison Crowder, Duke still could not contain the Panther offense, allowing a staggering 468 yards of total offense in the first half. The little momentum the Blue Devils could muster in the second quarter was erased by a last-second touchdown drive by Pittsburgh to close the half and 14 unanswered points to begin the third quarter.

Trailing by 23 points, the game once against seemed out of reach for Duke, but after the worst half of football it has played this season, the Blue Devil defense helped the team to claw back into the game, holding Pittsburgh to just 130 yards in the second half.

Cutcliffe often reduces efficient football to five keys for his Duke team—alignment, assignment, effort, aggressiveness and finishing. The Blue Devils could not have struggled more in the opening stages

of Saturday’s game, but one thing they did was finish strong.

“We’re going to finish. That’s something that we’re priding ourselves on,” redshirt senior cornerback ross Cockrell said. “Coach talks about... five things that you have to do to win the game, and the last of that five is finish. We did that [Saturday], but unfortunately we didn’t make enough plays.” in his weekly teleconference Sunday, Cutcliffe identified 17 plays that allowed the Panthers to rack up 423 yards of offense. Aside from those explosive plays, the Blue Devil head coach said that his team allowed just 2.8 yards per play on its other 62 defensive snaps.

“We executed well at times on both sides of the ball at times, but it seems like we’re one of those teams,” Cutcliffe said.

“We have a lapse in execution, it tends to blow up, not just be a non-productive play.” even when Connette tossed his third and fourth interceptions of the afternoon to put Duke down 58-41 with 8:30 remaining, an errant long snap on a punt set the Blue Devils up with a short field and allowed them to pull within three in the closing minutes. in a game that featured staggering offensive numbers and crucial turnovers, Duke did not just find a way to make this wild shootout a contest as a clock ticked down—the Blue Devils were actually in a position to win the game. “i think the second half, we definitely grew as a team. Second half we came out there and we fought back—we fought back hard,” redshirt senior defensive end Kenny Anunike said. “We just said let’s go out there and just hit them back in the mouth. They came out swinging in the first and we just went in at halftime, came back out and we were ready to go.”

But close was not close enough for a Duke team that was able to put each phase of the game together at different points, but simply made too many mistakes to come away with a win.

When asked whether or not he was happy posting a career-high six touchdowns and 55 points on Pittsburgh, Connette did not hesitate in his response.

“We needed to score 59,” he said.

No. 3 Clemson 26, N.C. State 14 The Tigers (3-0) remained undefeated Thursday night after traveling to raleigh to take on the Wolfpack (2-1).

Quarterback and heisman candidate Tajh Boyd threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to junior wide receiver Martavis Bryant. The Wolfpack, however, almost topped the Tigers when running back Bryan Underwood ran for an 83-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter, but it was ruled outof-bounds by the referees. Clemson remains atop the ACC Atlantic division, while n.C. State was dealt its first loss of the season.

No. 8 Florida State 54 Bethune Cookman 6 The Seminoles (3-0) registered 33 points in the first half and gained almost 500 yards of total offense in the game, quashing any upset hopes of FCS opponent Bethune Cookman (3-1). Junior running back Devonta Freeman averaged 11.2 yards per carry and rushed for a touchdown. redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston performed solidly as well, throwing for 148 yards and two touchdowns, despite remaining on the sideline most of the second half.

No. 16 Miami 77 Savannah State 7 The hurricanes (3-0) came in as 60-point favorites against the Tigers and did not disappoint, routing Savannah State with 637 total yards and forcing Tiger quarterbacks Anthony Bostick and Zach hutchenson to throw for a combined four interceptions. Miami starting quarterback Stephen Morris left the game in the first half with an ankle injury, but the hurricane coaching staff has called the injury minor. Morris should be on the field next week when the hurricanes travel to Tampa to take on South Florida.

Georgia Tech 28, North Carolina 20 Although the Tar heels (1-2) held leads of 13-0 and 20-7 in the first half, the Yellow Jackets (3-0) stormed back in the second half to improve to 2-0 in ACC play. Georgia Tech once again churned out an impressive offensive performance gaining over 300 total yards. redshirt sophomore quarterback Vad lee threw for 104 yards and a touchdown, while A-back David Sims added 99 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Virginia Tech 29, Marshall 21 (3OT)

Pittsburgh’s Anthony Gonzalez returns an intercpetion 37 yards for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 17-point advantage.

Brandon Connette scores his sixth touchdown of the day to pull Duke to within three points at 58-55.

The hokies (3-1) edged out a win in an overtime thriller in Blacksburg as senior quarterback logan Thomas ran for a two yard touchdown in the third overtime to give his team the advantage over visiting Marshall (2-2).

Despite an impressive 228-yard and-two touchdown performance by Marshall quarterback rakeem Cato, his two fourth-quarter interceptions in hokie territory prevented the herd from securing the victory.

Blue Devils surrender lead and fall to Syracuse

Conference expansion has only made ACC play all the more difficult this season, as Duke is still searching for its elusive first conference win after coming up short against Syracuse.

Traveling to Durham for the first time since joining the CUSE 2 ACC, the Orange DUKE 1 proved a formidable new conference opponent for the Blue Devils, grinding out a 2-1 comeback win against Duke Friday night at Koskinen Stadium. “[The Orange] really got after it tonight,” Kerr said. “They worked us and they were very good on set pieces, corner kicks in particular. They have a good team.”

Syracuse (5-2-0, 1-2-0 in the ACC) racked up the opportunities early on but failed to score on seven corners in the first half.

Trailing 1-0 to Duke (3-2-2, 0-2-1) midway through the second half, the Orange finally managed to translate their vigorous attack into a goal when forward Emil Ekblom converted on a 15-yard strike to the near post in the 61st minute.

Syracuse didn’t stop there, adding another just 15 minutes later. Fellow forward Chris Nanco found himself in a 1-on-1 with Duke goalkeeper Alex Long, who was able to get a hand on it but not enough to deny Syracuse of what turned out to be the win-

ning goal.

“That crucial second goal has been missing from our play,” Kerr said. “If we let teams hang around long enough they’re going to punish us.”

Duke’s lone bright spot came just seconds into the second half when breakout freshman Brody Huitema awoke a sleeping Blue Devil offense that had mustered just three first-half shots with his third goal in the last two games. Huitema was able to break free right off the kickoff and found the back of the net after a feed from teammate Luis Rendon.

After going goalless in his first five contests, the Canadian forward has been on fire as of late, posting what turned out to be his team’s only goal just three nights after burying Davidson in overtime.

“He’s a threat,” Kerr said. “He’s been a threat in the first five games as well—it just didn’t get on the score sheet.”

Huitema’s success was not enough to earn a victory for the Blue Devils, who saw their brief second-half lead slip away before the final whistle. The freshman said he believes his team is suffering from a lack of focus, which keeps the team from finishing games off strong.

“I think the biggest thing would be just concentration. I think that’s all it is,” Huitema said. “We just lacked the concentration on those two goals, and all it takes is those two moments to ruin a game for you.”

Duke offense explodes in 6-0 win

No. 9 Duke beat unranked Radord 6-0 Sunday at Jack Katz Stadium. Duke fired off RAD 0 37 shots on goal to the Highlanders’ two.

DUKE 6 The team’s performance was an improvement after its 3-2 loss to Northwestern Friday, head coach Pam Bustin said.

“Today we came out taking much better care of the ball,” she said. “One of the things we wanted to improve on from Friday were our basic skills. I thought we were a little more deliberate and a lot more disciplined in how we took care of the ball on both sides of the stick and the passing game.”

The Blue Devils (6-2) overwhelmed Radford’s defense from the beginning of the game and netted three of their goals in the first 20 minutes of the game. Though Highlander goalkeeper Sidney Encarnacion made 13 saves, Radford (2-6) struggled to maintain possession and was never able to stop the Blue Devils from setting the pace of the game.

The Blue Devils received a balanced scoring effort from Cherry Seaborn, Brenna Rescigno, Jessica Buttinger, Hannah Barreca, Devon Gagliardi and Heather Morris, who

each added a tally on the afternoon.

“Coming from a disappointing game on Friday, I think it was good we didn’t let it phase us,” Seaborn said. “The stats show we’re really getting up and getting our shots off.”

Although Duke’s defense had few chances for action during the game, it was effective at keeping Radford out of the circle and away from scoring opportunities. Senior forward Emmie Le Marchand said that was something the team has been working on following its loss to the Widlcats.

The Blue Devils allowed no shots on goal from Radford in the second half of the game.

“Friday we were really frustrated by the number of penalty corners we gave up defensively,” Le Marchand said. “At this level, you just can’t afford to do that. Our goal and shot stats were fantastic today, but you also have to look at the fact that we didn’t give up a single penalty corner.”

The first half was marked by flurries of activity from the Blue Devil forwards, but although the dynamic of the game put the most pressure on Duke’s offense, Le Marchand said that the amount of action was a welcome change from most games.

“I think it’s exciting,” she said. “The forwards get on the ball the least time of every one on the field, so when we get a game like this it’s exciting because we’re getting more touches than we ever do. Who doesn’t like a game where you get to score a bunch of goals?”

Freshman debut leads Duke to another top-5 finish

The Blue Devils battled many of the nation’s top teams on a golf course they had never seen, yet recorded their second top-five finish in as many starts this season.

No. 2 Duke struggled in its first round of the 54-hole Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., shooting eight-over-par 296 and finishing day one tied for eighth. The Blue Devils responded by posting rounds of one-over-par 289 and three-over-par 291 on the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Golf Course to finish the tournament at 12-over-par in a tie for third place, five strokes behind second-place Arizona State and 26 strokes behind tournament champion UCLA. The Bruins were the only team to better Duke in rounds two and three.

“I was pretty happy with the team the last two days,” Blue Devil head coach Dan Brooks said. “We got ourselves in too deep a hole the first day, but we were really solid the last two days.... UCLA just played phenomenal golf. There had been some rain, so the course was softened up, and they just made it play really long. Hats off to UCLA for playing some great golf.”

Liu was supported by seniors Alejandra Cangrejo and Laetitia Beck, along with sophomore Celine Boutier and fellow freshman Sandy Choi. Cangrejo opened with rounds of 71 and 72 and was tied for eighth after 36 holes before a final round 76 knocked her into a tie for 18th at three-over-par.

Beck and Boutier struggled in the first round, shooting rounds of 76 and 81, respectively, before bouncing back in rounds two and three. Beck carded a 71 and a 73 for her final 36 holes to finish the tournament at four-over-par and tied for 22nd.

Boutier shot rounds of 73 and 72 in her final two rounds to finish at 10-overpar, in a tie for 41st. Because the team score is calculated using the four best scores on the five-person-team, Boutier’s resilience on days two and three was crucial to the team’s success.

“She’s just a fighter,” Brooks said.

“She’s really a tough competitor. I wouldn’t say she hit the ball really well this tournament, but she just keeps fighting. The one thing you can count on is that she’s going to give it her all at all times. That’s what she does for us.”

After opening the season with back-toback tournaments on difficult golf courses against top competition, Duke now has some time off before starting competition in the Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 11. Despite their early success, the Blue Devils must continue to work hard before facing another slate of top competition in Chapel Hill.

“We’ve got a lot to work on,” Brooks said. “We had a lot of prep going into the first two tournaments.... We’re going to ease back a little bit, but then we’ll crank it up as we get into early October.”

Blue Devils struggle at Collegiate Challenge Cup

Playing on an unfamiliar golf course with an inexperienced lineup is no easy task.

The Blue Devils found this out the hard way and experienced some growing pains in their second start of the season.

No. 13 Duke struggled during the 54-hole stroke-play portion of the Collegiate Challenge Cup in Kingston, Tenn., finishing ninth out of 10 teams after a brutal final 18 holes in which the team shot 29-over-par. The Blue Devils finished the stroke-play portion of the event at 45-over-par and were only able to record two rounds under par for the week at the par-71 Golf Club of Tennessee.

“We had a few guys that were hitting it into trouble and having to scramble,” head coach Jamie Green said. “Once you hit it outside the rough line, the tall fescue, weeds and brush are so thick that you might not find it, and if you do find it, there’s not a lot you can do with it. Unfortunately, that’s why some big numbers popped up.”

Duke was led by junior Turner Southey-Gordon, who used a second-round, two-under-par 69 to finish at six-over-par, tied for 26th out of 50 individual competitors.

nament tied for 32nd at 10-over-par. It was Yeung’s first start of the season for the team after winning a silver medal with the Hong Kong national team at the China’s National Games during the team’s first tournament of the season.

“He got off to a nice start,” Green said.

“He generally can drive it pretty straight, keep the ball in play and give himself a lot of birdie opportunities. He didn’t put pressure on himself [in the first round]. He positioned his golf ball well and capitalized on a couple of opportunities.”

The other major component of the Collegiate Challenge Cup was a match play portion based on the stroke-play results in which an ACC team took on an SEC team. Duke was pitted against Vanderbilt for match play and played better golf during this part of the event, even though the team won only one of its five matches.

“We got off to a pretty good start [in match play],” Green said. “ We were in a better frame of mind. In each of our matches, guys were up.

They went out there with a very good mindset, were determined and played okay golf. Unfortunately, we had a bit of a rough stretch in the middle of the round. Vanderbilt’s guys capitalized on that. In match play, you can’t control the other guy and the players from Vanderbilt just made a few more putts.”

“He chipped it and pitched it a lot better [in match-play],” Green said. “He also put a lot less stress on his game. He didn’t try to hit heroic shots and challenge himself where the margin of error was too small. He used [the final round of stroke-play] as a learning experience.”

All of the Blue Devils will look to use this learning experience to get better in practice before they host the Rod Myers Invitational on October 12th and 13th at Duke University Golf Club.

“We’ll see how we respond,” Green said.

“This is a good, hard-working group, but we’ve got to to be able to translate the practice time and what they’re doing into tournament play.”

“They aren’t yet taking the risks to have a great race, but ultimately we need seven people to go for a great race,” he said. “We have to give the girls some room to remember how to race again.”
