ONE gREAT FELLOWSHIP From the President of the Duke Chapel Advisory Board, Gina Harrison

I

f you were here in 2011, when eric Whitacre came to Duke to lead a benefit concert with the Wind Symphony and the Duke Chorale, you know how popular he and his music are with young musicians. in June, i submitted my video to be included in eric Whitacre’s next Virtual Choir project, a performance of Fly, (A Paradise of Bliss) adapted from his musical theatre piece, Paradise Lost. i thought this would be a great opportunity for our Northwood high School (NhS) choral students. a Virtual Choir provides a chance to connect in new ways. in 2009, The Virtual Choir began as a social media experiment and is now a global phenomenon. an eric Whitacre fan recorded herself singing one vocal part of his choral composition, Sleep, alone, on her computer and posted it on YouTube. Whitacre saw it and suggested others do the same. a volunteer combined all the videos and they have been refining and extending the concept ever since. Virtual Choir 1, Lux Arumque, included 185 singers from 12 different

Learn more about the preliminary work together, but Chapel Choir Reunion when it came time to record, it and auditions for wasn’t at all like singing in a choir, Chapel or Vespers because it was just your voice choir by visiting alone. That’s the hard part. chapel.duke.edu/ The finished video, combining worship/music/choirs all of the voices, created a choir unlike any we’ve had before. it created a community for people in far flung places on our globe.

Those of us who are lucky to sing in a “traditional” choir like the Duke Chapel Choir or the Vespers ensemble, also utilize digital resources, mainly as rehearsal and communication tools. YouTube videos are often available for many of the works we perform. These can be useful to familiarize yourself with a work, to learn notes, and in many cases, to see very different interpretations. Chapel Music staff also post rehearsal audio tracks, especially for new students to learn Messiah, so singers can isolate their particular musical line and listen from their computer, ipod, or mobile phone.

Weekly emails and the Facebook pages keep us up to date with activities, choir member assignments, and posts from colleagues about their life outside the choir.

Digital resources cannot replace the time we spend together — the learning, rehearsing, and perfecting technique. in addition to performing together in real time, choir is also sharing good news and bad, offering prayers and worshipping together, traveling, eating, singing for a wedding or a funeral, and backrubs —all essential components of our choir experience. here at the Chapel, it’s also being part of a tradition that extends back more than 75 years.

COmE, HOLy SPIRIT, COmE From the Dean’s Desk, the Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery

D

uring my adolescent years, i was nurtured spiritually in a classical pentecostal church. i cannot count the number of times that i heard the phrase “Come, holy Ghost.” it was the theological mantra that stretched back into the early years of the church where the epiclesis (the invocation of the holy Spirit) was significant, particularly as it related to the partaking of the eucharist. One may not have heard english then, but latin — Veni Creator Spiritus. Regardless of the language utilized, it is clear that the third person of the Trinity was viewed as significant for the life of the Church, past, present, and future. in particular, at the congregation of my youth in Miami, Florida, the day of pentecost described in acts 2 was important as a prooftext for “the initial evidence of speaking in tongues” being a sign that one was filled with the Spirit. Whatever one thinks about this particular doctrinal assertion, over the years it has become evident to me that there is so much more to pentecost.

There is the gift of speech as the disciples “speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability,” but there is also the gift of hearing as “Jews from every nation under heaven” become bewildered and amazed because “each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.” at two other points in acts 2, the writer emphasizes that these Jews hear their “own language.” This tells us that the gifts of pentecost include the gift of translation, so that many different ethnicities can “hear” and understand what is being spoken “about God’s deeds of power.” Through the Spirit-initiated gift of speech, hearing, and translation, a diverse community of understanding is created. it is a community that maintains a creative relationship between the particularity of their cultural languages and the universality of God’s message.

The Spirit unifies diversity, thus giving us a glimpse into the nature of what Christ’s community is to look like. The

Sometimes, it is viewed as What does Pentecost a problem, but through the lens mean to you? of pentecost, we can consider it a wonderful opportunity. That we are different is a gift! it allows us to be the distinct people God has called us to be. in the Spirit, a community is not called to “uniformity,” but to unified diversity with an eye toward reconciliation.

This is what Duke Chapel works and prays toward — to be a diverse, unified body of Christ created by the Spirit —

interdenominational, interracial, international, intergenerational. as we look to live into our calling as an ecumenical community through our ministries of worship, music, student and community outreach, and interfaith engagement, may we strive to be the praying, multicolored, multilingual community represented by the artwork of he Qi (pronounced huh Chee) presented here. The Spirit has always been important for the life of the Church, and the Spirit must be important for the life of Duke Chapel if we are to be the community God desires us to be in the days ahead, for it is the Spirit who binds us together. as on the day of pentecost, let us be in one accord as we continue to pray: Come, holy Spirit, come.

The prestigious and the personal i often tell people that at Duke Chapel we live by the best and the worst of both of the academic and liturgical calendars. it is the best in that we truly feel that cycle of ebb and flow that comes with the school year. There is a rhythm to it. life doesn’t grind to a halt in June and July, but there is an easier pace about the place after the students leave campus in May, and there is a crackling energy around the Chapel in august when students return.

The worst comes just when our university colleagues are packing it in for a long winter’s nap during the semester break. at this time, we Chapel staff are gearing up for multiple Christmas services.

The joy i feel in Chapel worship is one of the things that has taken me by surprise. i knew that i would enjoy working with students. i came to Duke looking forward to building a vibrant program for interfaith engagement. But the worship? That was something i was not expecting to touch me in the way that it has. and, the reason it has touched me is because of the people i have encountered week after week—those who come even during breaks and quiet times. Chapel worship exists for the university but also for a community that does not shut down when students leave.

My surprise over Chapel worship might be attributed to the expectation many people have that Duke Chapel is a cold, impersonal place. its size, its reputation, its beauty— all of these speak to a place that exists merely as a formality and not as part of a deeply connected faith community. it only took me one Sunday in the Memorial Chapel, however, to realize the folly of this thinking.

On communion Sundays, ministers are available in Memorial Chapel to pray with people who have come to the Chapel looking for a special word of grace, comfort, or healing. it has been here that i have had some of my most cherished moments because it is here that i have been able to make real connections with individuals in the midst of a huge crowd.

In place of Monday Morning Prayer, Duke Chapel now offers an informal service of Midweek Prayer held in the Memorial Chapel each Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. noon during the academic year. The 20-minute service is led

by Chapel staff and includes scripture and prayer.

Some people come only once, when a burden is weighing heavily on them. Some come when they are in town for a daunting medical appointment. Some people return week after week, and it is such an honor to be invited to share a glimpse of their stories. in the midst of the vast greatness of worship at Duke Chapel, these prayers allow

for a human encounter. it is here that life’s joys and concerns take on smiles and tears. in prayer, we entrust one another with our heaviest burdens, deepest fears, and greatest joys. prayers with families and individuals during communion also provide the opportunity to get to know people whom i might otherwise not encounter. These people, their children, their neighbors, their partners often find their way into my prayers until we meet again. every week someone in the Chapel also opens the prayer cardholders and digs out the prayer requests that have been submitted. These represent the hopes, dreams, and fears of people who wander through this place looking for solace. We name these concerns and celebrations aloud in mid-week prayer during the academic year and pray for people by name when they give us that information. This is yet another way that we connect the individual to this great and towering church. it is our prayer life that makes this place personal. in this way, Duke Chapel worship comes to represent a beautiful synthesis of the best of both the prestigious and the personal. With a long tradition of strong, smart preaching and beautiful liturgy, Duke Chapel is exactly what one would expect in an exalted university worship service. and, with a cadre of regular attendees and a fully-functioning congregation, Duke Chapel is also exactly what one would expect in a warm faith community. But, one might not expect to find both of these things so beautifully woven in the same place. What a blessing it is to be here.

PathWays: Mission Trip Reflections Many mornings, especially in the winter months when it is cold and dark and i struggle to get out of bed, look at my bedside clock, note the 6:30 a.m. time, and think to myself, “it is 4:30 a.m. in New Mexico and the monks have already been praying for us for 30 minutes.” i have led the last four Chapel pathWays student trips to the Christ in the Desert monastery, which is nestled deep in the Chama Canyon in New Mexico.

Because of the length of travel, we often arrive at the monastery under the cover of darkness. The students sleep through the serpentine 13-mile drive into the canyon and when they wake up in the morning and walk outside, their first encounter with the Benedictine monastery is a simple church snug in the canyon rocks—a bold array of color against a sharp blue sky. as is the case with most things, the truest beauty of the monastery isn’t what is first glimpsed by the naked eye.

The most profound beauty of the week comes from the witness of the monks.

From them we learn commitment to prayer, hard work, hospitality, contemplation, and community.

There are no cell phone towers, and simple meals are eaten in silence. The chatter of modern life disappears, and for a week students feel as though they have stepped back in time: black Bene-

dictine habits, the chanting of the Gregorian psalms, words spoken in latin. a few years ago, when a student was concerned about a spider bite, i asked if i could call into town to talk to a medical doctor. i marveled at the gifts of the community when the monk responded, “Oh, well we have three doctors here.”

Other monks were formerly farmers, lawyers, university presidents, big city executives, and the like, before devoting themselves to God and to the contemplative life of this monastery.

Denial or Freedom?

The impulse is to use the word “retreat” when explaining what these men have done with their lives. in many ways it appears as though they have left what the rest of us call “the world” and retreated to a quiet, beautiful place.

The thoughts may come: “if only we were all so lucky!” But in the words of the Benedictine nun, Joan Chittister, this contemplative life is lived, “not as a way to deny the world, but as the spiritual key to living in it more freely.” and that is exactly what we learn from the monks at Christ in the Desert: not how to retreat into a fantasy world for the week we are there, but how to carry the seeds planted in this place, seeds of prayer, hard work, and hospitality, back into our worlds so that we can invite all of God’s children into freedom.

a place like Christ in the Desert, with its consistent discipline of prayer and radical hospitality, plays a vital role within the kingdom of God. Not only do the monks believe in the efficacy of prayer, but they also provide a refuge and haven for wanderers in search of holy renewal. part of the value of this trip for students (and for me) is that monastery life enables us to slow down, to cut off most of the distractions of “regular” life (TV, cell phones, computers), to spend significant time in the rhythms of prayer and worship with the liturgy of the hours (set times throughout the day, beginning with 4:00 a.m.

Vigils and ending with 7:00 p.m. Compline), and to reawaken to the voice of God inside ourselves. The witness of the monks is that no matter what you may be doing, be it working, or playing, or sleeping, all of it can be done in prayer.

So while it is easy to make speculations and judgments about the people who choose such a contemplative life, i’ve come to realize that whether viewed as runaway businessmen or holy men, they are firmly committed to praying for the church and the world and shaping their lives, and all who visit them around the disciplines of prayer, physical labor, and hospitality.

DIgITAL CONNECTIONS & COmmUNITy

A

s the Chapel’s Director of Student Ministry, my primary role is to walk alongside students during these crucial years in their journey of faith. This means long conversations over steaming cups of coffee and greasy spoon lunches, as well as community projects in Durham and small reading groups in the Chapel basement.

At PathWays we aim to help students discover that God is at work not simply in our hearts through worship, but also in our hands and heads through study and service. This is tangible work, and it has a real impact in the lives of students.

Increasingly, we are discovering the role that digital resources and online social media can play in our work with students. We realized long ago that Facebook is a more efficient advertising tool than plastering the campus with printed flyers, but today we are incorporating online aspects into many of our student pro-

grams. Let me give you a few examples.

Last fall I helped introduce students to our new Chapel Dean, Luke Powery, through a discernment group titled “Preaching with Sacred Fire.” We explored diverse forms of preaching in the Black Church tradition as we read Dean Powery’s book, Dem Dry Bones.

Alongside the Dean’s writings on lament and hope, I directed students to historic sermons and addresses from prominent Black preachers that are available on YouTube and iTunes U. Those online resources allowed students to connect the Dean’s academic writings on preaching with the sounds and voices of the pulpit.

Our students and ministers at the Chapel are also active on Twitter. We have summer interns live-tweeting their work in Durham and Chapel Scholars keeping in touch from abroad. During the spring semester a small group of students read Mihee Kim-Kort’s Asian American Feminist Theology. I connected with the Rev. Kim-Kort over Twitter, and she joined our closing dinner by Skype for a video Q&A with the students. If this sounds like jibberish to you, then consider joining us to see what it’s all about.

Even in an online world, our mission is the same: to provide opportunities for students to hear and respond to God’s call for their lives on campus, in Durham, and beyond, through study, counsel, service, and community.

As we adapt to changing student needs and explore new opportunities for growth, I am grateful for the ways that God has worked and continues to work through Duke Chapel PathWays, and I thank the Friends for helping make these opportunities possible.

interlocking Fingers The Congregation and Duke Chapel it may be self-congratulatory and potentially boastful to say the Chapel is a rare and special place. listing those things that make the Chapel unique and wonderful would fill the pages of this magazine and more. instead of trying to write of them all, i want to point to one thing that stands out when Duke Chapel is compared with other prominent university chapels from around the country: The Congregation at Duke Chapel. having an interdenominational church within the Chapel creates a space for dialogue, ministry, and mutual blessing that critically enhances the life of the Chapel and the church.

A Brief History The Congregation at Duke Chapel began in 1985 when the Rev. Dr. William Willimon encouraged the formation of an interdenominational congregation that would offer membership to a wider group of people than the Duke Church group—the congregational entity existing prior to the Congregation, which was open primarily to people affiliated with Duke. as former Senior pastor, the Rev. Nancy Ferree-Clark wrote, “[T]his new congregation neither owned nor administered the Chapel, but sought to support and enhance its ministry

while also building a strong sense of community among its members.”

Throughout its 28 years, this is precisely what the church has done.

From bible studies and fellowship dinners to mission trips and other service opportunities, the Congregation’s ministries have opened the doors to deepening a sense of community within the Chapel, while serving the people of Durham and the world. The Congregation has grown over the years from approximately 100 members to over 550 members today. Recently, the Congregation hired its third Senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Carol Gregg, to lead its staff and guide the ministries of the church.

From its very beginning, the Congregation’s life has been intimately bound with the needs and ministries of the Chapel and those who worship here. While both the Chapel and the Congregation have ministries and pursuits that are distinct from one another and have separate leadership and finances, the two come together such that each organization is strengthened because of their relationship together. Without the Congregation and its people, the ministries of the Chapel would be greatly diminished.

The Congregation is a significant source of connection with the

community of Durham and a vital venue for creating and sustaining community within the Chapel. at the same time, without the Chapel and its ministries, the Congregation would not exist as it does in its current form. Not only does the Chapel provide the building, the music, the preachers, and the liturgy, the Chapel offers a broader sense of direction for the community that worships on Duke’s campus. This reality keeps the Congregation and the Chapel in constant conversation, that the two might continually bless one another.

A Community of support as a youth, i was taught that while praying in groups it was good to hold each other’s hands with fingers interlocking. The point of interlocking our fingers was to show the ways one person’s strengths — the fingers — met with another’s weaknesses—the inter-digital folds—and vice versa to create a community of support and strength. When the Congregation and the Chapel exist together with “interlocking fingers” through conversation, ministry, and mutual blessing, our life together is enhanced, our witness in the world grows, and our life with God is better for it.

Joni Harris joined the Chapel staff in June 2013 as the assistant to the Dean.

Joni has been an employee of Duke University for over twenty-five years, most recently serving as a Financial Management analyst in the University Budget Office. Joni has also served in the president’s Office, lenox Baker Children’s hospital, and various other clinic areas in the medical center. a native of West Virginia, Joni and her three siblings all reside in the Raleigh-Durham area. her parents still reside in West Virginia and she visits often. Joni and her husband, Stan, have been married for over twenty years.

She is mother to Joshua and John, and step-mother to Kendrick. in her spare time, Joni loves working on her photography (the image of the Chapel arcade to the right was photographed by Joni). She also enjoys bird watching, and keeping up with her tribe of adopted pets—two cats, two dogs, and one turtle. as you can see, Joni is a true animal lover!

OMMUNITY

Dear Chapel Friends, One of the joys of being the director of development is getting to know the more than 3,000 Friends of Duke Chapel. Though half of us live in North Carolina, a quick look at our list shows that we hail from 47 states in America (anyone know potential Friends in Hawaii, Vermont, or Wyoming?) to around the world from Costa Rica to Afghanistan. We are multi-generational and multifaceted. Sixty-two percent of us are alumni representing a range of classes from 1935 to 2016. We serve in a multitude of professions, and volunteer our time for many different organizations.

Some choose to give because they are active in many of the Chapel’s ministries and some do so because they feel the Chapel is an important part of Duke University. Some attend Chapel services every Sunday and some haven’t been back to campus in 25 years. Some are active in choirs, some in the congregation, and some volunteer for Chapel outreach. We are from many church denominations.

In short, we are a diverse community.

One might quibble with my use of the word community because we are so diverse. I posit that we are a community because all of us have found something about Duke Chapel that transcends our everyday lives. We give our gifts to support a ministry that has held firm from the beginning of the Chapel’s existence.

The first gift, of course, was the building. As he was laying out plans for the University that would bear his family name, James B. Duke said, “I want the central building to be a church, a great towering church which will dominate all of the surrounding buildings, because such an edifice would be bound to have a profound influence on the spiritual life of the young men and women who come here.”

Entering the stunning and breathtaking building provokes contemplation and celebration. We can read the Bible’s stories in the stained glass windows, and rejoice in the rich sounds of organ and voices because of its architecture. But it is the Chapel’s ministries that bind us as a community. They give us tools to explore faith and provide a means to share in community—whether we are able to be in the building or are joining worship, concerts and events via the Chapel website.

Our interdenominational worship welcomes people from many Christian communities and denominations. By affirming our belief in God’s love, Christ’s sacrifice and triumph over death, and the Spirit’s healing power, we find that we can be a true community.

As we end another fiscal year, this letter includes a sincere thank you for your gifts on behalf of everyone who benefits from the Chapel’s ministries. I hope that you will find ways to be involved with Duke Chapel in this next year, and that you will continue your financial support, which ensures vibrant worship, inspiring music, dynamic and life-changing student ministry, and outreach in Durham, in the U.S., and in the world.
