I

t is a pleasure to write my first letter as president of the Duke University Chapel advisory Board. i’ve had the privilege of serving on the Board for the past several years, and i am honored by the opportunity to now serve as the Board president.

By way of introduction, i attended Duke from 1976 to 1980, graduating with an a.B. in political Science — of course knowing i was going on to law school. after graduating law school (from another distinguished institution i shall not name), i entered the practice of law, where i have been engaged for about 31 years. My focus has been on corporate, transactional and energy law, and after a stint as Senior Vice president and General Counsel of Constellation energy, a Fortune 200 energy company, i retired upon its merger with a much larger entity. But, best-laid plans are sometimes put to rest, as i was then recruited to join the North american electric Reliability Corporation, or

NeRC, as Senior Vice president and General Counsel. in addition to my legal career, i have been active in a number of non-profit organizations, including my current service as Chair of the Board of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. My partner, Jeffrey, and i are also involved in our church in Washington, Church of the epiphany, episcopal, where we both sing in the choir.

Jeffrey is assistant controller at the Kennedy Center, and is an active professional violinist. The love of music, particularly church music, runs deep in our family.

So, one might ask, why be involved with and support Duke Chapel? it is for me, as i suspect it is for many of you, a very personal commitment. i attended Duke after growing up in the Methodist Church, having been baptized and confirmed at a Methodist congregation on the Jersey Shore. i very much cherished that first church home — i sang in the choir, regularly attended Sunday School, received my Boy Scout God and Country award through the Church, and returned there regularly to worship.

But, it was at Duke Chapel where i felt my first, deepest spiritual longings. i can’t identify any one specific moment or event. it was a combination of things —walking by the Chapel on my way to introductory political science class, hearing the tuning of the newly installed Flentrop organ (which was the first pipe organ i had ever heard); listening to the amazing Chapel Choir as it sang Beautiful Savior before every service; reciting on Sunday the affirmation of faith that proclaimed “God is with us, we are not alone”; hearing preachers like Martin luther King, Sr. and William Sloan Coffin. These, among many other moments, created in me a new sense of spirituality, one that was both comforting and challenging. after attending Duke, i never ceased having a church home, wherever i lived or whatever i was doing. after graduating law school, i was always engaged in church life, whether as a singer, youth advisor, or part of governance (well, i am a lawyer after all). i truly believe that what i felt at Duke Chapel in the late 1970s created in me a need to be part of “the church”—to be regular in my attendance, consistent in my engagement, and generous with my support.

Now i have the opportunity to be more engaged in the life of the Chapel, where so much of my personal journey began. Much is different at Duke and in the larger culture from when i was an undergraduate student. There is a more persistent questioning of the value and relevancy of organized religion; there is questioning of the positions taken by organized faiths on a whole host of issues; there seems to be a growing disengagement of society with “the church” across much of our nation.

But i would argue, it is at this moment, when the very nature of organized faith is often being questioned, that Duke Chapel is even more important. it is important first and foremost for the students of Duke University — as a beacon of faith and learning, of how we can integrate education and religion in our lives. it is a place of inspired and erudite preaching — of approaching the scriptures of our faith in new and powerful ways. it is a sponsor of service —of faith in action. it is a home of the intersection of religion and the arts — of transcendent singing, triumphant organs, and beautiful stained glass that portrays the stories of our faith. it is what a university chapel can and should be—a place of faith, learning, and beauty. in the evolving nature of the church and society, the role of the Chapel must also evolve. it is why the Chapel’s new strategic plan, discussed in this edition of Chapel View magazine, is so important. The very title of the plan — Pontifex, meaning the bridging of faith and learning—is a powerful reminder of the role of Duke Chapel in the life of the University, the local community where Duke is located, and the national and international community where Duke is an important presence.

The Chapel advisory Board was privileged to work with Dean luke powery and the Chapel staff on this new strategic plan, and we are very grateful to all of them for their willingness to listen and reflect the Board’s comments. it is an exciting moment in the life of the Chapel — to articulate its vision, mission, values, and strategy in a comprehensive way. it gives me great hope that Duke Chapel— that towering presence on a great national and international university—will continue to be vital and relevant for Duke students, faculty, and staff, for the residents of the greater Durham community, and for alumni and other supporters across the globe. That Duke Chapel will continue to be, as the plan so beautifully states, “a beacon of Christian hope that bridges faith (religio) and learning (eruditio). i am honored to take on this new role with the Chapel’s advisory Board at this exciting time. i look forward to writing to you in future editions of Chapel View magazine, and hope that you’ll reach out to me with your questions, comments, and suggestions. Thank you for your support of Duke Chapel and its mission and ministries— it is vital to the Chapel and its work, and i know that everyone associated with the Chapel is grateful for your support.

E

very Sunday worship service we do it at Duke Chapel. We pass the peace after the prayer of confession and assurance of pardon. “passing the peace” may sound as if we are throwing it around like a ball, but what happens in that moment as people shake hands, speak to one another saying, “peace” or “the peace of Christ be with you” or the like, is a corporate blessing, prayer, and hope. We pass the peace because it is something that has not yet been totally fulfilled in our lives and the world.

We say it every week because the desire for peace is deep within us and within God. We pray for it and work for it in order to experience God’s kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven.”

This weekly liturgical practice can seem perfunctory, but is full of theological substance. When we say, ‘peace be with you,’ we are really saying, ‘Christ be with you.’ The peace is not our own. it is the peace of Christ, and we share it with one another because he brings us into relationship with

This is good “passing the peace” news for us all, and at the heart during a service of the gospel that has tugged at mean to you? my own heart. in fact, the peace of Christ serves as the theological heart of the emerging strategic plan/prayer for the Chapel. it is the unique gift of Jesus Christ that allows the Chapel to seek reconciliation and bridge-making as the core function of the work that we do: For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one, and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us... he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers... but members of the household of God (ephesians 2).

in this biblical setting, the writer speaks of the relationship between Jews and Gentiles but its relevance reaches our day and is made visible in the liturgical passing of the peace. When we embrace our sisters and brothers, strangers and friends, we embody this passage by inviting Christ to break down the walls between us and make us one. Christ reconciles us to one another and to God. Christ mediates. Christ bridges people to each other and to God through his life, death, and resurrection. and on this foundation, the beloved community, the one body of Christ is formed.

One might even say that Christ, as the preeminent mediator, is the ultimate pontifex. ponti, who? Pontifex. During past and present days that term has been used to refer to the head religious leader such as the pope. however, it is a latin term that simply means “bridge-maker.” Frederick Buechner’s quotation from The Hungering Dark, describes it well: The paradox is that part of what binds us closest together as human beings and makes it true that no man is an island is the knowledge that in another way every man is an island...

Island calls to island across the silence, and once, in trust, the real words come, a bridge is built and love is done— not sentimental, emotional love, but love that is pontifex, bridge-builder. Love that speaks the holy and healing word which is: God be with you, stranger who are no stranger. I wish you well. The islands become an archipelago, a continent... a kingdom whose name is the Kingdom of God.

The Chapel’s strategic plan/prayer is named Pontifex because we desire to build reconciling bridges in multifaceted ways. Ultimately, we hope to share Christ’s love that is pontifex at Duke University and in the local and global communities.

Following the example of Christ, who is our peace, the Chapel aims to be “a church without walls.” Just as Jesus broke down the wall that divides humankind from God, the Chapel hopes to bridge all people to God’s reconciling love.

Therefore the peace we pass to one another is not just to be shared within the walls of the Chapel building on a Sunday morning, but shared to all we meet outside the stone walls.

This peace is nothing less than love, which is nothing less than Christ himself.

With the help of the holy Spirit, we, at the Chapel, will embody faithfully, courageously, and energetically, a “ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor 5:18) in which there are no more dividing walls based on denomination, race, gender, class, politics, and even academic disciplines. in the following pages, you will hear more about our core values and what they mean for our bridge-making ministry. This is the heartbeat of the Chapel’s vision. May all our hearts be in tune with its life-giving rhythm in the days ahead.

HOSPITALITY AS THOSE INVITED

magine the most important dinner invitation you’ve ever received. Maybe it was an invitation to dine with your future spouse; perhaps it was even the evening of the proposal! Maybe it was an invitation to have a meal with an employer who opened a new career direction for you, or perhaps an invitation to eat with a long estranged family member; an evening that began the difficult process of healing and reconciliation. it might even have been an invitation to dinner with strangers who later became your friends. Where did this meal take place? in a home or a restaurant, in a public place or a private one, in a strange or a familiar setting? What was the experience like? What was it like to be a guest, the one invited, the one who received?

For Christians, the story always begins with being invited. The beloved of God are invited and welcomed as guests of the King. We are those beckoned to banquet with Jesus at the table of faith. By answer-

ing this call to come and dine, we have joined a community forever known by invitation and welcome.

The central act of Christian worship, the lord’s Supper, is a continual reminder that we are people who are invited. We hear again and again that Christ invites us to meet him at the table. Jesus continually welcomes us into the sacred spaces of his kingdom.

We never stop being people who need the grace of an invitation. as those needing a way in, from the perspective of outsiders relying on the welcome of others, we are called to live our faith in solidarity with those who are outsiders, strangers, aliens, and on the margins of society. at places like the Chapel, remembering this need for invitation can be a struggle. as a community with great resources, we can become people accustomed to hosting, giving, and welcoming. awaiting an invitation challenges our deepest sensibilities. We recognize needs; we determine appropriate (continued on page 17) hospitality as Those invited

eople are drawn to Duke Chapel, to its cool stone, colorful glass, majestic organs, and soaring ceilings; however, the heart of Duke Chapel is more than its external beauty, its truest beauty rests within the people who work within its walls, ensuring that the Chapel is a place of grace and care.

Weddings and funerals represent some of the mountaintops and valleys in the life of the Chapel. When a couple is married at Duke Chapel, we encourage them to bring their own minister, but often ministers from the Chapel are part of the process, offering pre-marital counseling and helping the couple to prepare for their marriage and shared life together (not just the wedding day).

These conversations can have lasting impact, encouraging people to consider a life of faith.

The Chapel also walks alongside families who are facing the grief of planning a funeral. Sara Blaine Clark is the Chapel’s Wedding and Event Coordinator. When she was hired, she took a pastoral care class at the Divinity School in order to better equip herself to work with families planning funerals. When people are walking “through the valley of the shadow of death,” it is a gift to have Sara’s combination of compassion and professionalism.

The Chapel is a place that commemorates the mountaintops and valleys of our lives, but one of the most meaningful and ongoing “ordinary” ways the Chapel offers spiritual care is through the provision of prayers for healing and anointing with oil. On Sundays when communion is served as part of the main worship service, ministers stand in the Memorial Chapel to offer prayers for healing. On alternating Sundays, that opportunity is offered after the main worship service in the Memorial Chapel. This ritual may be one of the most important things we do as a church. The Chapel seeks to hold people in the midst of lament. If people assume that church is a place only for people who are happy or who have it all together, offering prayers for healing as part of worship gives space for brokenness and lament within the worship service. The Chapel ministers pray that brokenness would be mended, and that people would feel held in the embrace of Christ.

A few weeks ago, Sara received a call from the oncology unit at Duke hospital.

A young woman, Jessica Sink, was facing terminal cancer. She had been a patient at Duke hospital off-and-on since she was 10 years old. Her cancer had recently returned and doctors agreed the illness was terminal. It was likely she had only a few weeks to live.

Jessica had dreamed of being married at Duke Chapel. A justice of the peace married her two years ago, but she and her husband wanted to renew vows at the Chapel before death parted them. They wanted photos for their one-year-old daughter. It was a heartbreaking request, but one that the Chapel honored. A plan quickly took shape. Over the course of about 48 hours Sara worked with her characteristic speed and thoughtfulness to make a myriad of arrangements. A time was set for 7:45 a.m. on a Wednesday morning. Family members and hospital employees made their own preparations, including finding a dress and getting medical clearance and discharge orders. The morning of the service, all hands were on deck. Sara and the new Visitor Relations Specialist, Andrew Klumpp, came in early to manage the influx of wedding guests.

Director of Chapel Development, Beth Gettys Sturkey, was there to turn pages for Brian Coggins, the volunteer organist. Chapel Housekeeper Oscar Danztler came in extra-early to help prepare the sanctuary.

The hospital nearly didn’t release Jessica, so it was a real show of kindness and teamwork from across the university and health system that finally brought her gingerly down the long Chapel aisle on the arm of her dad. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place as guests listened to the new meaning of “Til death do us part.”

Oscar said it was one of the most moving services he’d seen in his eighteen years at the Chapel. After leaving the Chapel that morning, Jessica went to the beach to feel the sand between her toes, and then was taken into hospice care. She died less than two weeks later.

The ceremony for Jessica wove together various strands of the Chapel’s spiritual care to the University and community. Humankind is connected both in grief and in celebration, and the Chapel is here to come alongside during those moments and bring to them beauty and sacredness.

The Many Names of

There is so much intricacy in the masonry, woodwork, and windows of Duke Chapel that it can be difficult to take it all in. after a while, those of us who work and study here tend to breeze past the details as we come and go. We really appreciate it, then, when someone with fresh eyes points out an unnoticed pattern or design. This happened a few months ago with some pakistani visitors. a family was visiting the Chapel as so many do, and on their way out they became quite animated. They approached the visitor relations specialist sitting at the desk in the nave and exclaimed with joy about a detail they noticed in the doors leading out of the narthex into the nave. as one enters the Chapel through these doors, the Greek letters ihC (Iota Eta Sigma) made of lead are part of the ornamental window designs. These represent the first two and last letters of “Jesus” in Greek. as one exits the Chapel, however, a stylized version of the arabic word “allah” (God) can also be seen in the reverse of this lead-work. Being pakistani Muslims, they noticed this immediately and felt welcomed in Duke Chapel in a new way. i like to think that this was more than coincidence—that it represents the holy Spirit at work in the design of this place and in the design of our language around the divine. i also think that this is an apt analogy for the work we do here. When James B. Duke envisioned the ‘great and towering church’ in the midst of the university campus, he clearly had a Christian image in mind, and from its inception, the Chapel has represented an ecumenical approach to ministry. The word “ecumenical” comes from the Greek “oikoumene” and translates to “the whole inhabited earth.” it relates to a movement among churches to bear witness to the unity of their oneness in Christ. More broadly, the term ecumenical can imply a spirit that encompasses people of all faiths. here at Duke Chapel, we live into both meanings of the word. Through interdenominational worship, sacred music and ecumenical student ministry, we encourage relationships that are built in the unifying reality of God’s all-encompassing love—a love that many know through the person

of Christ. at the broader level, we represent the wide-ranging spectrum of faith on campus and aim to create opportunities for people of any faith tradition to flourish.

Religious life at Duke and our interreligious programming encompass a host of religious perspectives and theologies including Christians, Muslims, Jews, hindus, and Buddhists.

What i particularly like about the symbolism of the narthex door is that one encounters a sacred word both coming and going from this place. For Christians it is important that they enter the Chapel as church through the name of Jesus, and we do that weekly in worship and sacred music. But, for the wider Duke community, it is important that the Chapel helps to foster a sense of faithful belonging for people across traditions. it is a place where, Insh’allah (if God wills it), anyone can see her tradition represented. We do this through interreligious work with students, faculty, and community members. We do this by hosting Muslim Friday prayers and hindu special pujas and religious rituals.

The Muslim community commonly recognizes ninety-nine names for God that speak to God’s vastness and diverse aspects. We each in our own traditions have many metaphors and words that attempt to represent ineffably sacred names.

Whether those names are read in Greek, hebrew, arabic, Sanskrit, pali, Urdu, Spanish, Chinese, or just plain old english, i hope that all may see themselves represented in the religious diversity of this university.

Restoration of Duke Chapel to Begin in 2015 Duke Chapel will be closed to the public for about a year Duke Chapel will close to the public on May 11, 2015, as part of a restoration project that includes rehabilitating the ceiling and replacing the Chapel’s original roof, which is covered with sheets of leadcoated copper.

The roughly yearlong work will also allow crews the chance to restore several stainedglass windows and woodwork, including the pews, and clean the Chapel’s floor and walls.

The Chapel will reopen in the spring of 2016.

The Chapel has had few major repairs since it was completed in 1932, but materials used 80 years ago in the original construction are now in need of replacement to preserve and maintain its beauty and use for future generations. The work is part of Duke’s overall effort to restore the historic founding-era campus buildings, including perkins library, West Union and Baldwin auditorium.

“There is never a good time to close Duke’s most iconic building, but we’re acting now to maintain and preserve the Chapel as one of the last great examples of neo-Gothic architecture on a collegiate campus,” said Tallman Trask iii, Duke’s executive vice president.

Since Duke Chapel will be closed during the restoration, officials are currently working on plans to move weekly worship services and special events to other locations. Duke-affiliated families will be given priority for booking a wedding at Sarah p.

Duke Gardens or the Washington Duke inn & Golf Club. The Chapel and Religious life offices in the basement will remain open throughout the restoration.

Wiss, Janney, elstner associates, inc., a team of structural engineers, materials scientists and architects, will handle the Chapel restoration. Their recent projects include restoration of the Washington Monument and the Washington National Cathedral, both of which suffered damage in a 2011 earthquake.

While construction crews will focus first on the ceiling, replacing mortar in the limestone ribs, the building has been determined to be safe for visitors and continued use.

The restoration follows a review in 2012 in which engineers performed hands-on inspection of the ceiling’s surface.

Rev. luke powery, dean of Duke Chapel, said that even though work would shift gatherings to spaces across campus, it will also allow for greater integration into the community at-large.

“Duke Chapel is more than just a building,” he said. “During this year of restoration, we hope to become known as ‘a church without walls’ as the Chapel continues to offer outreach to the people of Duke, Durham and beyond.”

Sunday worship services are tentatively set for Baldwin auditorium during the summer and page auditorium in the fall. Christmas and easter services may be moved to larger locations.

Despite restoration work adjusting access to Duke Chapel, Duke community members and campus visitors can count on one thing staying the same. The daily ringing of the Chapel’s carillon bells will continue every weekday at 5 p.m.

Chapel Restoration

IntegratIve eruditio et religio educatIon author Richard Rodriguez recently wrote this about erudition: “The danger of weighted knowledge is literalism. The danger of weightless knowledge is relativism.”

When the trustees of Trinity College selected the motto “eruditio et religio” in 1859, they had something very close to Rodriguez’s wisdom in mind.

They expressed an understanding that knowledge without religion might yield a dangerous relativism, and that religion without knowledge might veer into a dangerous literalism. The motto for Trinity College, which would later become Duke University, announced to all those who enrolled that true knowledge and true religion can only be had together, in tandem.

What does that mean for Duke Chapel today? how can we pursue knowledge that, in Rodriquez’s words, is neither weighted nor weightless? how can we uphold the motto of eruditio et religio on Duke’s campus, in Durham, and beyond?

Heart, Hands, Head One way to do this is by remembering that we are more than simply our minds. One of the strongest temptations we face is the desire to compartmentalize our lives into discrete spheres. The office and the classroom are places for intellectual development; the treadmill and the basketball court are places for physical development; the restaurant and the dorm are places for social development. That leaves Duke Chapel as the place for spiritual 10

development, i suppose. But how can we expect spiritual development to happen if we have to leave our books, bodies, and friends at the door? at Duke Chapel we aim to help people discover that God is active not simply in their hearts through worship, but also in their hands and heads through work and service.

Dean luke powery has said that Duke Chapel strives to educate the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. he calls it integrative education. i can think of no better example of integrative education than the experience of one of our undergraduate students, who first connected to the Chapel by joining a reading group on the holy Spirit through pathWays.

after this group, she became a Chapel Scholar and applied to participate in a mission trip to Costa Rica this spring. as a part of that mission trip, students were encouraged to sign up for a half-credit academic “house Course” that discussed theology, mission, and approaches to service. all of these experiences nourished her journey of faith and learning—academic study, acts of service, intellectual discussion, and spiritual discernment with Chapel staff.

Bridging Duke, Durham, and Beyond another way for Duke Chapel to embody eruditio et religio is to be an active participant in the learning that takes place at Duke and in Durham. This can include anything from “Bridge panels” hosted by the Chapel Dean to staff members facilitating student reflections at the undergraduate Winter Forum. Most importantly, Chapel staff members teach courses and give lectures in a variety of different departments around the university, including the Music Department, Duke Divinity School, and the Sanford School of public policy. Several of these courses require active engagement across both disciplinary lines within the academy and boundaries in the community. For instance, associate Dean Christy lohr Sapp will teach a fall course in the FOCUS program for first-year students called “acts of engagement: interreligious approaches to Service

and leadership.” Students will examine the works of Martin luther King Jr., and Thich Nhat hahn in class, and they will travel off campus to local agencies for practical service experience with a variety of religious communities. By pushing the conventions of classroom education beyond campus walls, courses such as this one enable Duke Chapel to contribute to the development of curricular and co-curricular learning for students and the local community.

Inspiring Freedom and Creativity One final example of eruditio et religio at Duke Chapel is our outreach programming to students and community members. C. eric lincoln, for whom we named the new “lincoln Minister” position at Duke Chapel, once wrote

this about knowledge: “To see life steadily and to see it whole; to know, and to make knowing an instrument of freedom and creativity—that is our challenge.” part of integrative education is helping cultivate a vision of life as steady and whole. it means that our knowledge serves as an instrument of freedom and creativity. This is nowhere clearer than in the work of alana Jackson, one of our recent pathWays Fellows. alana designed her own course of study as a student at Duke that focused on dance as an important aid to end-of-life medical care. During her year working at Duke Community health as a pathWays Fellow, alana developed and implemented a program that helped Durham community members living with parkinson’s disease to dance together.

She placed her knowledge in God’s creative hands, where it became an instrument of freedom for neighbors struggling with the hardships of a challenging disease. integrative education holds a significant place in Duke Chapel’s mission to build bridges to friends and neighbors around the university and the community. it also models the wider aim of Duke University, putting knowledge in service to society.

The combination of curricular and co-curricular learning, when put into the service of freedom and creativity, opens knowledge to be an instrument of God’s work. We bring our whole selves—body, mind, and spirit—to Duke Chapel.

Creative Expressions

I

n the days following the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Duke and Durham communities, like countless communities around the U.S., struggled to find the words to express their horror, fear, and anguish over what had happened in New York, Washington, and pennsylvania. Two weeks later, thousands of those same people gathered inside and outside the Chapel to experience the words and music of Mozart’s Requiem and Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei, and to find some measure of comfort from them. For some who attended, hearing the music was a journey of faith, moving from one prayer to another, from the horrifying

depiction of the Judgment Day to the soothing vision of a heaven to come, while for others the music served as a means of personal introspection, selfexamination, and a search for understanding or explanation for the causes of such a horrific act. The music, in conjunction with the noble ambience of the Chapel and the sense of community with so many other people present, allowed healing to begin. it was a vivid reminder that music, through its own language of sound unbounded by specific meaning, has the ability to stimulate listeners’ imaginations, especially in music that has been skillfully created and performed.

The power of artistic expression to touch people deeply was palpable on that day in 2001, as it was on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in 2011. it can also be present in any given Sunday morning worship service.

Whether it’s someone grieving the loss of a loved one or feeling stress about some aspect of their lives, or whether it’s just a person in the midst of worship, every encounter with the creative arts has the potential to affect us deeply, to provoke an insight, to put us in touch with the divine.

One doesn’t make such experiences happen; they just come to us, often unexpectedly, from somewhere deep inside us. and it can happen to anyone of any age and from any background, whether or not they know the language of the particular art form.

The Chapel welcomes within its walls people from a great variety of backgrounds and experiences, and each person carries with them their own affinities for certain kinds of artistic expression that more easily touch them than others. it is the mission of the Chapel to encompass in its artistic offerings a variety of styles and traditions to which people of many backgrounds can relate, while maintaining the traditions of great art that has inspired people for many years. The music on a Sunday morning may sometimes include Caribbean choral music with steel drums, as at the installation of Dean powery, asian music for flute, organ, and choir, or a South african freedom song sung simultaneously with an ancient chant of the Catholic church. at other times one may hear africanamerican spirituals, South american choral music with guitars, or a hymn from pakistan. Many services are further enhanced by brass instruments or even a small orchestra. in concert performances, one might hear, for example, the African Sanctus of David Fanshawe, which incorporates recordings of indigenous african people singing, or the All-Night Vigil of Rachmaninoff, incorporating centuries-old chants from the Russian church. any concert audience may include those present for whom the relative familiarity of the specific musical style may easily open a door to either a deep religious experience or a more generally human experience. Those who are less familiar with that musical style may themselves start to experience such transcendence in this music as they become familiar with its sounds and its aesthetic through their sensitive listening.

The Chapel is committed to partnering with artists and musicians in our community and beyond to create beauty and to express our individual and corporate longing for God. in the recent past, the Chapel Choir has joined forces on Sunday mornings with singers and instrumentalists from Kidznotes, a local program dedicated to changing children’s lives through music. The chemistry that resulted from putting together two such diverse groups of people in a worship service has been electrify-

ing. The Durham Children’s Choir has an ongoing relationship with the Chapel, bringing its artistry and mission into several annual worship services and various concerts.

The Chapel also hosts performances by professional choirs sponsored by Duke performances, by touring choirs from other universities, by several other university and community choirs, and occasionally by instrumentalists. a variety of choirs sing on Sunday mornings when the Chapel Choir is away, including children’s choirs, high school choirs, and community choirs from many different backgrounds. Beyond the variety of this world of sound, the Chapel has recently displayed artwork on the walls of the nave and the transepts. Whether it is paintings inspired by T. S. eliot’s Four Quartets, as was on display in conjunction with an innovative program of performance, readings, and lectures sponsored by the Divinity School’s Duke initiatives in Theology and the arts (DiTa), or paintings of the Stations of the Cross, recently commissioned by the Chapel in conjunction with a concert by the Duke Vespers ensemble, visual art is a growing part of the creative life of Duke Chapel. Whether the medium is sight or sound, the creative aspect of Duke Chapel offers multiple expressions of God and humanity in our world.

Ecumenical Communication “Wounds in the body of Christ are always grievous, and put us in the dust at the feet of Him who died to make us one.”

I read these words at the age of 22, while lying on a floor mat in the non-denominational intentional community house that had recently become my home. It was the summer after graduation from college, and I was glued to the pages of Norman Grubb’s biography of Rees Howells, founder of The Bible College of Wales and missionary throughout Southern Africa. Little did I know that the community I joined at 22 would go through a gut-wrenching schism just four years later, an experience that for me, embodied Grubb’s words.

The powerful quotation that opens this article in Chapel View magazine is one that regularly reminds me that the heart of communication at Duke Chapel is its ecumenical nature. After experiencing schism, I was deeply attracted to Duke Divinity School and ultimately Duke Chapel because, though the roots of the school and of the Chapel’s founder are Methodist, a Catholic-Pentecostal-Episcopalian girl like me found a voice within its interdenominational community. The gothic arches hold up centuries of tradition that date back further than any single denomination represented.

coming together in unity. Similar to the end of Grubb’s quotation above, ecumenism’s goal is oneness — the kind of oneness that doesn’t negate uniqueness, but instead, listens to it, learns from it, and incorporates it into the whole.

For the past two years, the dean of the Chapel has been listening to the voices that make up the Chapel’s ecumenical community, and he has encouraged those of us on Chapel staff to listen, as well. What I have learned is that listening to dissenting voices is not fodder for a story on schism, but a smorgasbord of diverse perspectives seeking a place at the proverbial banquet table. The more the Chapel listens ecumenically, the better the Chapel communicates the heart of the Gospel message. It is a message that is big enough to hold all of us and all of our diverse opinions inside the outstretched arms of our cruciform Lord.

My fellow communicators across the globe, Christian and non-Christian alike, too often focus their constituents’ attentions on the topics in which Christians most readily disagree. Whether the focus questions theology, morality, or the social order matters less than whether or not there is a juicy story pointing toward the catastrophic division of the Church writ large.

Schism is not the only response available to humanity’s propensity to challenge and critique; difference is also an opportunity to incite positive change through collaboration and careful listening. In communications theory, listening is not a passive activity, but the signal of an active empathetic presence. Ecumenical communication invites challenge, critique, collaboration and careful listening to dialogue, with the hope of producing stories that point Christianity toward oneness.

Ineke de Feijter, a professor of media, religion and culture at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, has studied and analyzed Christian communication in a European context. Her communication theories map well onto a university church like Duke Chapel, whose audience is as diverse as the student population. In her book, The Art of Dialogue: Religion, Communication and Global Media Culture, she writes, “The Christian communicator ‘proclaims God’s Kingdom rather than our divided churches’... Ecumenical Communication [occurs when] Christians of different denominations [are] speaking with one voice and bearing witness to the one body of Christ…”

Chapel Communications services each Chapel area, promoting the “bapticostal” voice of our dean, the Lutheran voice of our associate dean who speaks on behalf of 25 distinct religious life groups, and every Methodist, Nazarene, and Presbyterian in between. The goal is to listen to the places where people from different denominations are speaking with one voice and to communicate that truth. It is one small way the Chapel trusts God’s unifying Spirit to do the work of the kingdom, bringing all Christians humbly before the feet of Him who died to make us one.

Dear Friends, in May, i attended an Open house celebration for the newly relocated pathWays house. as i enjoyed too many cookies lovingly home-made by the pathWays Fellows living in the house this year, and visited with those attending, i was struck by the many ways the event was a microcosm of the Chapel’s bridge-making. pathWays Fellows and Summer interns living in intentional Christian community become the arches of a bridge linking the Chapel community with the West end community where they live and the Durham non-profits at which they serve internships. Many are serving in health care sites such as the Va hospital, lincoln Community health Center, and Duke Community health—seeking to understand the intersection of health care and faith. One student works at Durham Center access, a walk-in mental health crisis facility. One is working at Real Durham which provides circles of support with folks in material poverty interested in walking out of it, one serves at housing for New hope, which seeks to prevent and eliminate homelessness, and one with JusticeMatters, which provides empowering legal services to the vulnerable and marginalized in North Carolina, specializing in helping immigrants and survivors of human trafficking rebuild their lives.

Their tenure is just starting and they can barely contain their excitement for what lies ahead in establishing relationships at their work and in their new neighborhood. internship advisors, Chapel staff, Chapel Friends, and members of the Congregation at Duke Chapel help nurture and encourage the pathWays participants and they were at the party to continue that work. here at the Chapel, as i look around during weekly worship in the nave, i see people of many ages, races, and ethnicities who are forming bridge arches and foundations with each other through common faith, and are drawn together in worship to God and in care for each other.

We hope to be a bridge to all Friends of Duke Chapel—to help you feel part of Duke Chapel whether you live in Durham or in Dublin. Worship services, concerts and recitals, publications, events, the website and our media ministry are points of entry to that bridge. We hope you will want to meet us on that bridge by continuing your vital support. please know that your gifts are building bridges of hope and faith for all who seek God’s love and care here.

STAFF UPDATES Andrew Klumpp Visitor Relations Specialist andrew grew up on the plains of rural iowa, in a small town whose entire population could easily fit inside of the nave where he now works. he attended Northwestern College in Orange City, iowa and earned degrees in Music and Religion before finally leaving the heartland to attend Duke Divinity School. andrew first became acquainted with the Chapel as a member of the choirs—originally the Chapel Choir and now the Vespers ensemble. in addition to his involvement musically, he’s also participated in worship services and sits on the Board of Directors for the presbyterian Campus Ministry. he joined the Chapel staff in 2014.

Joshua went on to receive a Masters of Divinity and a Master of arts in Church Music in atlanta from the Johnson C. Smith Seminary of the interdenominational Theological Center in 2010. a member of the United Church of Christ, Joshua is currently seeking ordination. his outside pursuits include freelance writing for online publications such as “Religion Dispatches” as well as taking a good road trip.

Christopher has concertized throughout North america, europe, and australia, and in 2012 and again in 2013, he performed the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. in his roles at Duke University, Christopher provides organ music for Duke Chapel and Divinity School worship services and other functions. he also serves as accompanist for the Chapel Choir and the Duke Divinity School Choir. in his spare time he enjoys running marathons, biking, and sailing.

James Todd is co-coordinator of Chapel Communications, working closely with the Communications Specialist, and focusing on audio-visual broadcasts, telecasts, and live streaming. he came to the Chapel in July of 2014 from Duke’s Office of News and Communications where he worked as a writer, producer and, most recently, video manager. Before that, he was a production assistant on WUNC Radio’s “The State of Things” show.

James went to Duke as an undergraduate, majoring in physics. he is a member of the episcopal Church and lives in Durham. he is married with four children (yes, it makes for an adventuresome family life!). James is has been a member of the Congregation at Duke Chapel faith team for men and women transitioning out of prison.

HOSPITALITY AS THOSE INVITED (continued from page 5) interventions; and we act, inviting those in need to utilize the resources of our “table.” But recognizing our own need (even the need to host all the time!) is often difficult. This oneway method of hospitality is efficient and has immediate effects: hungry bellies are fed; naked bodies are clothed; roofless heads are sheltered. With our task seemingly complete, we move on to the next community of need, the next project, or the next program.

We write about our achievements in newsletters and on our websites, and we celebrate what we have done.

This method of hospitality certainly has its merits, but it fails to accomplish one of the most important tasks of Christian hospitality—creating and sustaining trusting relationships with strangers. This important aspect of Christian hospitality is conveyed in one of the Greek words used for hospitality in the New Testament, philoxenia. Philoxenia is a compound word composed of the words phileo (friendly love) and xenos (foreigner), signaling friendship between strang-

ers. For bonds of love to develop between strangers, especially those from different social or economic locations, humility grounded in an “invited-in” identity is essential. There is wisdom, from both the theological and practical views, to approaching relationships with strangers not just by inviting, but also by being invited. it takes a measure of humility to wait for an invitation, because it opens opportunities for trust and transformation on both sides of the relationship. as the Director of Community Ministry, i work closely with pathWays Fellows and interns who serve in Durham’s West end, and i see this lived out on a practical level day by day. i see students wait eagerly for concrete invitations to participate in the transformation of individuals and communities. To be a place and a people known for hospitality in the community of Durham, those of us at the Chapel are continually reminded to act counterintuitively and open ourselves to be invited as guests into the various communities of

Durham. Only by being invited guests do we earn the right to act as hosts of hospitality in communities of material poverty and need. This is not a passive approach to hospitality; rather, earning the right to host requires the time and energy to show up as guests and listeners at community meetings and neighborhood potlucks and on porches and sidewalks. imagine with me again, only this time of a future invitation of utmost importance, one that has the potential to teach true hospitality and build lasting friendships. i invite you to be a guest at the table of humble listening in places that are strange to you throughout Durham (strange to me too!) and learn with those of us in the Chapel community how to become people of hospitality. Will you join us?
